WHERE ARE THEY NOW? OLD SAINTS RETURN TO ALL SAINTS'!

Emma Hann (1988) is an Interior Designer and has recently returned to Perth after living in Hong Kong for five years.

It is wonderful to see so many Old Saints returning to the fold in various capacities and remaining involved with the College community. The annual College Music Concert ended with a mass choir of staff, parents and former students and lifted the roof off the Centre for Performing Arts. (Top left: Max Ashford (2002), Keara Wood (2011), Rachel Eilene Botha (2011), Lucy Townsend (2011), Dan Ablett (2003), Sonia Johnson (née Reed) (1985) and Adrienne Wright (née Hartley) (1986). The Careers Speakers' Corner sees many Old Saints return to ASC to chat with students about the paths their lives have taken since leaving the College. (Above right) Dean Cook (2009) speaks with 2013 Year 12 students and Monica Leslie (2011) advised students on study techniques. WAAPA students Matt McGlynn (2009), Liam Hickey (2011) and Vaughan Jameson (2010) are all studying Jazz Performance and returned to the College to entertain staff at an end of term function. DJ Wazz, Josh Wasley (2006) gave the Junior School students a Christmas Disco they would never forget! He said the noise and vibrancy were on par with Metropolis Fremantle, where he is the resident DJ on a Saturday night. Currently at Curtin University studying a Bachelor of Commerce in Management & Marketing, he also looks after the Metropolis Marketing and Promotions. The Old Saints are delighted to support 'Djaaliny', the new ASC Community Learning Program. ALL SAINTS’ COLLEGE

VOL. 4, DECEMBER 2013

From the Old Saints' President Petra Lushey Welcome to the fourth edition of the Old Saints' Newsletter for December 2013 The last few months have been some of the busiest ever for the Old Saints. The inaugural Heritage Week was a huge success and the annual All Saints’ College Careers Night saw a record attendance by Old Saints. Heritage Week was held in September with the intention of making a stronger connection with the current students. The event included a fabulous visual display of photographs from deep in the archives, a Heritage Week Quiz, Old Saints guest speakers and a sausage sizzle with all donations going towards the Ethan Davies Scholarship for Brain Cancer Research. We also began selling the Old Saints' Frisbees which are still on sale! We are very pleased to have raised more than $1300 for the scholarship so far and would love all Old Saints to buy some Frisbees to increase this amount further. The ASC Careers Night was a successful evening and it was wonderful to have so many former students offer their time to speak to the students. I was incredibly impressed by the manner in which the students conducted themselves. They were polite, friendly and genuinely interested in getting advice on their chosen career paths. If you would like to assist the Old Saints in any of their ventures please email: mary.thornton@allsaints.wa.edu.au The Old Saints' Committee has made a donation towards the College’s new Community Learning Program, Djaaliny (Noongar: flame). Djaaliny brings highly acclaimed guest speakers to the students, parents, staff and the wider community. Finally, I am stepping down as President, but I am greatly confident that the Old Saints will continue to grow in strength and stature in the capable hands of my successor Michael McPhail (2010). OLD SAINTS SUPPORT THE 2013 CAREER EXPO

The All Saints' College inaugural Heritage Week was held in September 2013. Shannon Davies (1999) spoke at the Senior School Assembly about his son, Ethan, and his battle with brain cancer. Shannon and his wife have achieved much since young Ethan's diagnosis last year. They have established a scholarship to fund research by a neuroscientist into this form of cancer. We raised $1324.40 to assist with research into children’s brain cancer. Shannon can be seen above congratulating new Old Saint members William Cross (L) and Nicholas Hann (R) (2013) on coming first and second in the Heritage Week Quiz. Little Ethan can be seen above with the recipient of the first scholarship, Dr Sasha. Thanks to Sonia Johnson (née Reed) (1985), Eric Chan (2009) and Victoria Sullivan (2009) for cooking over 300 sausages in under an hour and Oliver Beath (1998), Rahni Greene (2002), Sue Wilson (née Leslie) (1985), Erin Kerr (2003), Karyn Osmetti (2006) and Mark Balding (1988) who sold the frisbees, ably assisted by new Old Saint Liam Donaldson (2013). To end Heritage Week, Old Saint Luke Newing (2005), came and spoke to the students in Kindergarten to Year 2 about his life as an Exotic Keeper at Perth Zoo.

Year 12 students are welcomed to the Old Saints by Michael McPhail (2010) and Bruce Lee (1986) (left) and Year 6 students act the part of Old Saints at their end of year Assembly (right).

'Tumaini' (in Swahili) means hope and that's exactly what Eliza Edinger and Rachel Richardson (2011) wish to bring to less fortunate children in Africa. They recently left for Tanzania to work as volunteers at the Tumaini Orphanage to give hope to children who are much less privileged. For five weeks they will live alongside these children, living just as they do, caring for them and looking after them as if they were their own. As a gift to the children, they asked the ASC community to donate pencil cases filled with stationery. They received overwhelming support.
