Dubai Real Estate Advice - Top Tips for Downsizing -

The decision to downsize a home can make so much sense financially, but smaller budgets often buy smaller homes. If you are moving from a big home in Dubai to a smaller one (or worse from a small home to an even smaller one), you will be faced with a number of problems, such as, what to do with all your stuff and how to fit your entire home life into a smaller space. You should not despair though as help is at hand. If you’ve recently bought or rent a property in Dubai or are moving for the first time in Dubai, consider these top tips if you’re moving from a big space to a smaller one.

Let go of stuff, declutter and donate to charity There is always a temptation to hold on to things. Stuff, afterall preserves memories of fun times and of moments you cherish. However, ‘stuff’ can quickly get out of hand and take over. Some people even have a psychological problem with stuff – it is called hoarding. The truth is that the majority of us are somewhere in the middle between an abject hoarder and someone who just feels overwhelmed by too much stuff. The answer to these problems is simple. Someone moving from a bigger space to a smaller one has to learn to let go of stuff. Not everything you hold dear, but the items that you can do without. The things you have not used once in 6 months and for some of us - the skinny wardrobe worn five years ago. To effectively declutter, you should plan for a declutter every three months. You can ease the pain by making a donation to a charity shop, or by giving items to a friend. For bigger, heavy items, you can list them in the local paper, or on Ebay as free to take away. You could even phone your local charity shop and ask them to take them away – many do this for free.

Multi-purpose Furniture

If you are moving from a bigger space to a smaller house in Dubai, you can compensate for the loss of space by using furniture for several purposes at once. Why not use a tabletop ironing board instead of one that has its own ‘legs’? You can even get ironing mats that can be spread over any unit top and neatly fold away in a drawer when not in use. You can buy beds that conceal handy storage space underneath, and even position the television in a unit that opens and closes to create space when the TV is not being watched.

Using Space Effectively

Using space effectively is easy when you plan how every inch of space in your Dubai home will be used. Space – like every resource including money, can be maximised when you ‘budget’ with it. Plan in advance what to compromise on, and what to keep. Get out the measuring tape and measure items to ensure they will fit comfortably in the space available in your house or apartment, as misjudging the size of an item, can be a frustrating mistake. Giving a little time and thought to creating a clutter-free space is so worthwhile and will allow you more time to think clearly and enjoy your new home.
