About

Alma Kamal

Process Journal

Biography of director Paul Anderson was born in 1970 in Studio City, California. He was one of the first “video store” generation of film-makers. His father was the first man on his block to own a V.C.R., so Anderson had an infinite number of titles available to him. While film-makers like Spielberg cut their teeth making 8 mm films, Anderson would shoot films on video and edit them from V.C.R. to V.C.R.

Anderson grew up in “The Valley” which shaped his artistic self, especially since three or four of his features were set in the Valley. His most significant amateur film was The Dirk Diggler Story (1988). Anderson applied to NYU, and dropped out two days later. His tuition money was thus refunded and he used it to make Cigarettes & Coffee (1993). “My filmmaking education consisted of finding out what filmmakers I liked were watching, then seeing those films, I learned the technical stuff from books and magazines, and with the new technology you can watch entire movies accompanied by audio commentary from the director. You can learn more from John Sturges’ audio track on the Bad Day at Black Rock laserdisc than you can in 20 years of film school.” —PTA 2012 The Master

Initial Thread There is an alienated, strange drifting character, unbound by family connections… in search for something, comes across a ‘master’ figure who sees him as a challenge to establish his position and power… The characters then have deep connections, but the ‘master’ always fails to keep this student. The drifting soul then leaves and is free once again, for a while. There's always rage, physical and sometimes even murderous, there’s religion, but not in a pure form. There's crying and an overwhelming sense of loss and guilt.

1. When lost, we look for inspiration from higher places. However, we must not blindly succumb to them, we must find our own way.

Location & Dates

2. Family is very important, whether it’s your biological one or one you create for yourself. 3. We lose ourselves in trying to blindly defend our leaders. They don't need us, we mean nothing to them.

Paul Thomas Anderson was born on June, 26th. Therefore, I've chosen this to be the date of my festival. The festival goes on for three consecutive days. Location wise, I considered The Valley, which influenced Anderson a lot and was featured in many of his movies. I also considered having the festival at an ‘unconventional’ place to fit the thread. In that case, it could be an industrial area or NYU filming school as an inside joke, but also because his experience really affected him. My final decision was to have it take place at the warehouse where the movie Punch-Drunk Love was shot. The reason being is: it reflects the industrial sides of Anderson's movies, it shows the 'ugly, but real' side of LA—something Anderson is very fond of showing, it's an unconventional place to have a film festival. The address for the warehouse is 10101 Canoga Ave, Chatsworth, CA 91311. It's car-repair garage called Eckhart Auto Body.

4. Constant struggle between following authority, which gives you a sense of belonging, and being free spirited. 5. Damaged characters are the result of a broken home (abusive parent(s)) 6. Each one of the characters has one special gift/skill that sets his story in motion. 7. Some people never fit into any kind of social circles… they’re doomed to be alone.

Inherent Vice – Story Chart

After trying to come up with all the common themes amongst PTA's films, I rested on one very important and very strong thread, which is: Thread

Damaged characters searching for family and finding it in unconventional places, which helps them achieve reconciliation, forgiveness and ease the burden of their past.

Guiding Narrative

Who: late 20s, uneducated male, works in sales at a department store, but was fired today for showing up to work drunk, again.

Girftfrield comes back |

Where: back at my apartment. |

What: feeling stressed and lost, smoking and drinking, trying to decide what to do with my life.

The Master – Story Chart

Gets beaten

Positioning/ This festival is to celebrate the movies of Paul Thomas Anderson and History of Festival to encourage people to rethink the people they’ve put on pedestals

Gets a girl in the end | Loves the family, but struggles to fit in | |

and to follow their own visions instead of authority figures. We live in a time where, despite the social media and the fake smiles, we are lonely and damaged and extremely parched. We are all frantic to find that one source of energy and power that would tell us what to do and how to be so we can be happy. That's why we search for such figures and blindly follow them, but they lead us to war and greed and destruction. We need a reminder that our own voices are as powerful and insightful and we can walk our own journeys. Audience

People who feel lost and are drifting through life searching for something, have had troubling family dynamic and/or have had success in finding a sense of family in unconventional places.

These charts were drawn to show the story development in PTA's movies. Things usually start out badly, but always end up in a better place for the main character

Buckets are collections of photo style, type, material, graphic elements and/or textures we had to gather according to the director's style and keep updating each week, until we get to a final selection that we use throughout our system. The following are my initial buckets, which included 3 different directions for each of the categories; this will give an idea of what I started out with and how I was able to narrow it down to exclude other directors whose styles are close to Paul Thomas Anderson.

Dashboard Given the Guiding narrative, the imagery selections should be refined.

LEVEL 1

This moodboard is a selection of the images which will be used for the festival; it includes a total of 18 images divided into three levels— Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3—Level-I are the main images while Level 3 are the background images and textures, Level 2 is in between. Level 1 images are often on the covers of things: posters, catalogue, ads, etcetera. 'These images will need to be able to share their space a bit with type and graphic elements, but as "alpha" imagery, the image will indeed be a primary focus.

LEVEL 2

Level 2 images (secondary) will be less objective, less alpha than L1. They will share space with type and graphic elements (50/50) and be useful for chapter-openers, text backgrounds, and the like. Level 3 (tertiary) imagery will not simply be a textural wash (that's potentially a separate bucket and something layered in independently, but will share most 0f its space with other elements. It will be abstract or far less objective than L1 and L2, but will still retain something from the visual language established in L1 and L2 images. These will be useful as backgrounds for full-spread quotes, for instance.

Textures

These images represent the final selection that was used throughout the Damaged Goods festival

About Paul

Anderson was born in 1970. He was one of the first of the “video store” generation of film-makers. His father was the first man on his block to own a V.C.R., and from a very early age Anderson had an infinite number of titles available to him. While film-makers like Spielberg cut their teeth making 8 mm films, Anderson cut his teeth shooting films on video and editing them from V.C.R. to V.C.R.

The Valley may have been immortalized in the 1980s for its mall-hopping “Valley Girls”, but for Anderson it was a slightly seedy part of suburban America. You were close to Hollywood, yet you weren’t there. Would-bes and burn-outs populated the area. Anderson’s experiences growing up in “The Valley” have no doubt shaped his artistic self, especially since three of his four theatrical features are set in the Valley.

When we’re in love we experience pleasure, and extreme pain.

The film was often joyous in its look at the 1970s and the days when pornography was still shot on film, still shown in theatres, and its actors could at least delude themselves into believing that they were movie stars. Yet “Boogie Nights” did not flinch at the dark side, showing a murder and suicide, literally in one (almost) uninterrupted shot, and also showing the lives of these people deteriorate, while also showing how their lives recovered.

Anderson got into film-making at a young age. His most significant amateur film was The Dirk Diggler Story (1988), a sort of mock-documentary a la This Is Spinal Tap (1984), about a once-great pornography star named Dirk Diggler. After enrolling in N.Y.U.’s film program for two days, Anderson got his tuition back and made his own short film, Cigarettes & Coffee (1993). He also worked as a production assistant on numerous commercials and music videos before he got the chance to make his first feature, something he liked to call Hard Eight (1996), but would later become known to the public as “Hard Eight”.

The film was developed and financed through The Sundance Lab, not unlike Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992). Anderson cast three actors whom he would continue working with in the future: Altman veteran Philip Baker Hall, the husky and lovable John C. Reilly and, in a small part, Philip Seymour Hoffman, who so far has been featured in all four of Anderson’s films. The film deals with a guardian angel type (played by Hall) who takes down-on-his-luck Reilly under his wing. The deliberately paced film featured a number of Anderson trademarks: wonderful use of source light, long takes and top-notch acting. Yet the film was reedited (and retitled) by Rysher Entertainment against Anderson’s wishes. It was admired by critics, but didn’t catch on at the box office. Still, it was enough for Anderson to eventually get his next movie financed. “Boogie Nights” was, in a sense, a remake of “The Dirk Diggler Story”, but Anderson threw away the satirical approach and instead painted a broad canvas about a makeshift family of pornographers.

Part of Anderson’s artistic D.N.A. comes from his father, who hosted a late night horror show in Cleveland. His father knew a number of oddball celebrities such as Robert Ridgely, an actor who often appeared in Mel Brooks’ films and would later play “The Colonel” in Anderson’s Boogie Nights (1997). Anderson was also very much shaped by growing up in “The Valley”, specifically the suburban San Fernando Valley of greater Los Angeles.

Barry Egan hates himself and hates his life. The only male among eight siblings, Barry is treated poorly by his overbearing sisters without them probably even realizing it. Despite owning his own business, he has gotten nowhere in life largely because of his insecurities. He leads a solitary life, which allows him to hide his violent outbursts that occur when he’s frustrated.

His solitude however allows him to think, he stumbling upon a scheme to travel the world on a pittance, travel which he has never done. Concurrently, he meets two people who pull him in two different directions. The first is Lena Leonard, a friend of his sister Elizabeth. Barry is slow to realize that Lena is attracted to him, he making her make all the first moves. Lena is eventually able to get Barry out of his shell, she who sticks around despite his obvious problems. His burgeoning relationship and thus new life with Lena is threatened by the second, “Georgia”, who he contacted in an effort to alleviate his loneliness. A child of the cinema, Anderson went about making movies right out of school, and by the time he was 25 he was directing his first feature, Hard Eight. His provocative 1997 movie, Boogie Nights, made a splash, and Anderson’s Oscar-nominated script got just as much attention as Mark Wahlberg‘s performance as a porn star. Anderson’s next film, Magnolia (1999), earned him even more praise for his mature dramatic sensibilities, and brought him a second Oscar nomination for screenwriting. He then made Punch-Drunk Love (2002), a dramatic feature with comedian Adam Sandler, and oversaw parts of the Robert Altman film A Prairie Home Companion (2006), before embarking on the American epic There Will Be Blood (starring Daniel Day-Lewis), the 2008 movie that earned eight Oscar nominations, including two for Anderson, for best director and best adapted screenplay.

The date of the festival is in celebration of Paul Thomas Anderson’s birth—June 26, 1970—and goes on for three consecutive days due to the heavy schedule and duration of the films. The location—10101 Canoga Ave, Chatsworth CA—is the warehouse where the movie Punch-Drunk Love was shot. The reason for the choice of this venue is to reflect Paul Thomas Anderson’s vision in his movies where he insists on presenting a very raw and realistic version of the truth and, in turn, of Los Angeles. Unlike the commercial way in which it’s been glamorized and romanticized, in PT Anderson’s movies we get to see the grunge and fall in love with its beauty nevertheless.
