TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com Christmas movies are one of the best things about the holiday season. In late August and early September, scenes for Christmas Around the Corner, a movie directed by Canadian actress Megan Follows, were filmed in Carleton Place and Almonte. The flick, which stars Alexandra Breckenridge from This is Us and Jamie Spilchuk of Hard Rock Medical fame, was originally called Christmas Giveaway. It also stars Jane Alexander, a winner of a Tony and two Emmy awards, and a four-time Academy Award nominee. Christmas Around the Corner will air on the Lifetime channel at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14. Viewers can expect to see a number of familiar landmarks, including the town hall and old train station in Carleton See ‘CHRISTMAS’, page 4

Upgrading infrastructure is a steep hill for many municipalities to climb, but McLaughlin said Mississippi Mills has accomplished much in four years to ensure its assets have a longer life, including six new bridges, an expanded Pakenham branch of the Mississippi Mills Public Library and a new roof on the Almonte Community Centre. "We have a financial plan and asset management plan that have gone a long way to closing the massive infrastructure gap we inherited," he remarked. Councillors reflect Torrance, who ran for deputy mayor in the Oct. 22 election but lost out to John Levi, was particularly proud of council and staff, who she said worked as a team, "with respect and positivity even while our opinions differed." There was a lot of emotion at Mississippi Mills council Nov. 20 as outgoing council members sat around the horseshoe one final time. In his annual address to the community, Mayor Shaun McLaughlin indicated those council members leaving "have 109 years of combined service." "They take with them a wealth of municipal experience and corporate knowledge, and leave behind many achievements," he stated. Councillors who will not return for the 2018-2020 term include Coun. Alex Gillis, who served on Mississippi Mills and Almonte councils for 26 years; Coun. John Edwards (21 years in Mississippi Mills and Ramsay); Coun. Val Wilkinson (15 years); Coun. Duncan Abbott (13 years in Mississippi Mills and Pakenham); Coun. Jane Torrance (11 years); Coun. Paul Watters (eight years); Coun. Jill McCubbin (four years); and Coun. Amanda Pulker-Mok

(three years). Current councillors Christa Lowry and Denzil Ferguson were elected as mayor and councillor, respectively. "Some of you have chosen to retire. Others we may see coming back," McLaughlin commented. "I wish you all the best in whatever paths you chose." McLaughlin, who completed one term as mayor and opted not to run again, said there were many achievements in which council could take pride, including investments in recreation such as the splash pad, skateboard park and play structure in Gemmill Park, as well as a new youth centre "to provide kids a safe place to hang out." Economic growth was another area of success for the municipality, McLaughlin noted, through 13 lots sold in the Almonte industrial park "that will dramatically boost commercial taxes and local jobs." "We have a local economy, with a strong tourism component, that is the most robust since the mills closed down," he contin-

The story revolves around Fortenbury Books. The North Market Cafe (former Palms) in Almonte doubled as the bookstore. Scenes were also filmed at nearby Baker Bob's. Hoping to meet Follows, Sherry Gesner of Carleton Place, a longtime fan, spent her 40th birthday scoping out the Christmas Around the Corner set in Almonte. The two ladies did meet and took a picture together. Richard Caron lives in Kanata; however he and wife Donna have a place on Clayton Lake, west of Almonte. The couple is

anxious to see the movie. "With friends visiting from Arizona and Florida, we saw some of the filming in Almonte, including a set off Wolf Grove Road," Richard told the Canadian Gazette. Neshama Entertainment produces Christmas Around the Corner in association with MarVista Entertainment. Follows is best known for her role as Anne Shirley in the television miniseries Anne of Green Gables and its two sequels Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story. In a September interview with editor-in-chief Bridget Liszewski of The TV Junkies, a website about the latest and greatest in television, Follows said: "So I love doing both - directing and acting." will take place outside Capone's Deli, located at 14 Bridge St. Even if just for one night, sleeping outside gives people an opportunity to experience homelessness, along with the associated challenges. Capone's Deli will be open all night to offer washroom facilities. "There will be snacks too, and The Grand Hotel is sponsoring hot chocolate," Mathieu said. "Dress very warm," he added. "People usually bring sleeping bags and tarps, but cardboard makes a great base." Money is raised by way of donations: individuals, businesses and organizations. Tips from the last three weeks at Capone's Deli are already earmarked for the cause. All One Cold Night participants will receive a ballot for a chance to win prizes, which were donated by local downtown businesses. "You know what ... if it was only me who showed up I would still do it, trying to raise as much money as possible," Mathieu revealed. Getting emotional, homelessness is a tough subject for him. "I left home at 14," Mathieu admitted. "I had a difficult home life." "People think kids leave home because they are bad kids, but there are a lot of kids outside because of problems in the household," he said. Mathieu remembered spending two weeks on the street in Barrie during winter. With the youth shelter full, he had no place to go. "I got blankets from the (David) Busby Centre," he said, and "I was sleeping on a roof at the time, waking up at 4 a.m. and wondering what is going on here ... it was really bad." Lea also had a difficult family

CHECK OUT

life. Born and raised in OttawaVanier, as a teenager she spent time living on the streets and going to shelters. She often slept in school playgrounds because she thought it was the safest place for a young female. "People think homelessness is a big city problem ... just because you do not see people on the streets here," Mathieu. "You see them in larger cities; however, there are homeless youth in Lanark County." On Nov. 17 last year, with sleeping bags and layers of clothing, upwards of 40 people slept outside in the cold during the inaugural One Cold Night. "We raised $2,000," Mathieu said. This event took place outside the now defunct Soak Artisan Bath & Body, located at 157 Bridge St. "Our goal is to raise $5,000 this weekend," Mathieu said, and "we are hoping for the same turnout." Twenty people are already guaranteed to take part. Mathieu is proud of his wife for her efforts in getting the One Cold Night event up and running. Mathieu and Lea recently celebrated the birth of a son - Atticus Maurice. He is named after the fictional character Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. "Lea will be staying home with the baby, but I will definitely be here," Mathieu said with a smile. He added: "A lot of kids come from hard homes, and there is a lack of resources in our area. Besides Terrilee and Cornerstone, I do not know what the next option is." Programs offered by Cornerstone Landing Youth Services Inc. are as follows: housing first case management; Ontario Works trustee; rent supplements and financial assistance; transitional housing; donations of supplies; and by name lists.

OPINION EDITORIAL

LIGHT IT UP SAFELY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON During the holiday season, it's important to enjoy time spent with family and friends. It is also the time of year where most Canadians are using a lot of electricity with additional Christmas lights on, the furnace running, spacer heaters on, the stove cooking dinner, plugging in your vehicles so they start and all the new gadgets getting plugged in. The Canadian Safety Council offers some safety tips for this winter and holiday season. Whether it's because you were shovelling the snow or pulling too hard on the extension cord, sometimes the cord gets damaged. If your extension cord is damaged at the plug or the sheathing, do not use the cord. The damage may cause you to get an electric shock. Repairing the cord with electrical tape is not recommended and will not ensure that it is safe to use the cord in the long run. Using timers for your outdoor holiday lights is not only a great way to ensure that they are on before you're home, but is also a great way to be environmentally conscious. A timer will also shut off the lights before you go to bed, saving you money on your power bill. You won't even have to leave the comfort of your own home to plug or unplug the lights. Turning off the lights before going to bed prevents the light bulbs from overheating in the night, and setting them on a timer ensures that it's not a task that might slip your mind. Whether it's at home or in the office, outlets can only handle one portable space heater. As soon as you plug in that second one, you'll trip the breaker. Most home outlets are rated for only a single 12-amp or 1,500-watt load. Check your space heater and any other electrical device that you're plugging to ensure it doesn't exceed this rating. Most modern houses have GFCI outlets on the exterior of your home to plug in holiday lights and other electrical equipment. The benefit of a GFCI outlet is electric shock protection for you when using portable cord- and-plug connected electrical equipment in an indoor or outdoor environment. While we're on the topic of GFCI outlets, think of hitting that test and reset button before you plug in your device. You want the GFCI to work to protect you from being electrocuted should there ever be an electrical fault. Consider doing this in the bathrooms in your house and on outside outlets at least once a month or ask your family or guests to test the GFCI before they use the outlet. It's better to ensure the protection is working long before you need it. Enjoy these tips which can help you have a safe and happy holiday season.

WHO WE ARE

LETTERS & COMMENTARY RESIDENT CONCERNED ABOUT TREATMENT OF DOGS IN AREA DEAR EDITOR:

I am distressed; specifically, regarding the treatment of dogs in our area. Whether they are technically working dogs or, purportedly, family pets, many of our local dogs seem to suffer neglect. Left outside, for hours, to bark incessantly, in the unbearable heat and killing cold, it seems that by virtue of living in the country, these dogs are exempt from their right to compassion and comfort. For years, I volunteered with animal rescue organizations, fostering, rehabilitating and providing care for hundreds of victims of hoarders, puppy mills, and abuse. I can't forget the poodle kept in a filthy cage for 10 years, being constantly bred; the husky with the embedded collar, chained and sur-

rounded by 60 other dogs in similar distress; the toothless, blind and deaf dog, living with 50 cats in a two-bedroom apartment, etc. Now, listening to the desolate, frantic barking of my country neighbours' dogs, I worry. Our winters can be bitterly cold. Why aren't humans kinder?

LUCY COLLINS, ASHTON

LANARK LODGE STAFF WORTHY OF ACCOLADES DEAR EDITOR,

I read some negative comments about Lanark Lodge in The Perth Courier recently (social scene on the editorial page), and a couple of others in the summer. While it's easy to complain in this imperfect world, there is so much to

be said in favour of the lodge, starting with the front-line people, who are always short-staffed, yet they do their best where some would say, "Forget it." They are under persistent time pressures, and yet they do an efficient job and maintain an attitude of kindness. Long-term care takes a lot of humility, and most of us would be unable to do it. Anyone who visits the lodge will see this. My mother has been living there for several years now, and I haven't had a single instance that would be anywhere near worthy of a complaint; on the other hand, I could list many occasions worthy of accolades. The people there should be appreciated.

CARLETON PLACE CHRISTMAS TREE ROOTED IN HISTORY

Your support helps save lives www.heartandstroke.on.ca

TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com

University hearing study seeks participants.

Submitted/Bob White This beautifully decorated 10-foot Christmas tree stands every year in the upper hall of the Neelin Street Community Centre (arena) in Carleton Place. It is deeply connected to former downtown anchor businesses. Place who are the real winners. "We have six to eight major Christmas events at the arena - from the town's annual Appreciation Night to the Bowes Brothers' holiday show," White said. "So many people get to enjoy the tree." The large tree, which stays up until after the new year, still has a Cook's of Carleton Place tag attached. It will not be removed. "The tree has a story," White said, and "it is nice to

see it still going strong." The Bowes Brothers Home for Christmas Concert is Sunday, Dec. 2. "Mary and Wally come to the show every year," White said. "I think they know about the tree ... John (Bowes) mentioned it one year." The town's Appreciation Night is Saturday, Dec. 8. During the festivities, the municipality recognizes its employees who have given long years of service. Too, the town's 2018 Citizen of the Year is announced.

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study.

There is nothing prettier than a Christmas tree decorated with lights, ornaments and garland. During the holiday season in Carleton Place, an artificial Christmas tree stands tall in the upper hall of the Neelin Street Community Centre, and not many people know it is rooted in local history. The 10-foot tree's journey to the local arena began at the former Cook's of Carleton Place, a junior department store on Bridge Street. For 37 years, longtime residents and community contributors Wally and Mary Cook owned and operated the business. Cook's of Carleton Place closed its doors in 1995. In 1993, Wanda Sheil bought the former Remembrance Gift Shop, which was established in 1950 by her mother's first cousin. Seven years later, Sheil moved the business to a new spot on Bridge Street the previous home of Cook's of Carleton Place. The Remembrance Gift Shop closed in 2013. Bob White, an employee with the municipality's recreation and culture department, as well as a founding member of the Carleton Place Arena Staff Association, told the Canadian Gazette: "I was working on the street and noticed a sign in the shop's window about a (going out of business) sale." He went inside. "Wanda asked me if there was a spot at the arena for a big Christmas tree," White explained. "I told her there was, but joked we did not have any money," he continued. "'Make me an offer,' she said." White suggested $100. His offer was accepted. Although the Carleton Place Arena Staff Association, headed up by recreation and culture manager Joanne Henderson, walked away with a great deal, it is the residents of Carleton

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #1 Highway 7 and Highway 15 Intersection Improvements (GWP 4084-16-00) Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study THE STUDY The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained WSP to undertake a Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study for improvements to the intersection of Highway 7 and Highway 15 in the Town of Carleton Place (GWP 4084-16-00). The study area, shown in the key plan, includes Franktown Road northerly approximately 430 m to Alexander Street, Highway 7 westerly approximately 360 m to the abandoned CPR/multi-use trail corridor, Highway 15 southerly approximately 850 m and Highway 7 easterly approximately 690 m to McNeely Avenue. The objectives of this study include: • Improvements to the intersection of Highway 7 and 15 to meet interim and long-term transportation needs; • Access review of commercial entrances and intersections to Highways 7 and 15 to ensure safe and efficient traffic operations and to support ongoing and proposed development of surrounding lands; and • Consideration for all road users including active transportation and recreational trail users. In parallel with the Preliminary Design and EA Study, MTO and WSP are working with the Town of Carleton Place to develop a Secondary Plan for lands surrounding the Highway 7 & 15 intersection (as shown on the key plan). PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE This is the first of two Public Information Centres (PICs) that will be held as part of this study. The purpose of this PIC is to introduce the study and provide an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed alternatives for the intersection improvements and access review. It will also present information regarding the Secondary Plan, including the Planning Act process, preliminary vision for the study area, and preliminary local access/transportation network alternatives. Members of the Project Team will be available at the PIC to discuss the study with you and answer any questions you may have. Following the PIC, digital copies of the PIC display materials will be posted to the project website at www.hwy7-15ea.ca. The PIC will be held as follows: Date: Location: Time:

Thursday, December 13, 2018 Carleton Place Arena – Upper Hall 75 Neelin Street, Carleton Place, ON K7C 4H1 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

PROCESS This study is following the approved planning process for Group ‘B’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000), with the opportunity for public input throughout the project. Upon study completion, a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) will be prepared and filed for a 30-day public review period. Newspaper notices will be published at that time to explain the review process and identify locations where the TESR can be reviewed. The Secondary Plan is following the approved process under the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. P.13. Upon study completion, it will be presented to the Town of Carleton Place Council for adoption. ARNPRIORAREA ATTEMPTED MURDER CASE REMANDED TO DEC. 18 An Arnprior-area man facing attempted murder and other serious charges has had his case remanded until Dec. 18. The lawyer for William 'Bill' Kirby, 72, made a brief appearance in Renfrew court Nov. 21 on behalf of his client, who remains out on bail. As the lawyer is still awaiting full disclosure of evidence, the case was put over until Dec. 18 in Pembroke court. A publication ban remains in place for all testimony introduced in court. After a woman was found seriously injured in the bush near Gunsmith Road in McNab/Braeside on Sept. 13, Kirby, who lives in Mississippi Mills, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and criminal harassment. As the OPP investigated the incident, Kirby was charged on Nov. 1 with 23 new offences. The charges related to four victims, including the woman who was found injured in the woods and three others. The additional charges include uttering threats, sexual assault, pointing a firearm, assault and more counts of criminal harassment. Kirby was granted bail on Oct. 2 and continues to be out on bail with stringent restrictions.

death of late Coun. Bernard Cameron on Feb. 11, 2016, and scrutiny from the formation of the Pakenham, Ramsay & Almonte Taxpayers' Advocacy Coalition (PRATAC). Torrance said it only made the council stronger. "Following the violent murder of Bernard Cameron, we shouldered the trauma together, and continued as a team in the constant and co-ordinated negative assaults by PRATAC," she stated. "We entered the term as colleagues and left as friends." Torrance is particularly proud of Gemmill Park campus project and the library expansion. "The support we have given to community groups and the huge quantity of work we have completed allow for the unsurpassed growth we have supported in the past four years." Pulker-Mok was appointed as Cameron's replacement in April 2016. When she threw her hat in the ring, she said she "knew it was a long shot

but one worth reaching for." " ... I still remember telling my husband, 'If I even get one vote, I would deem the process a success,' and well, here I am, two and a half years later. Although, every meeting since then, as I have taken my seat around this table, I have thought of Coun. Cameron and his family," she remarked. Acknowledging the past few years have been a "wild ride," she's most proud of the creation of Almonte's Heritage Conservation District and enhancements to Gemmill Park and the Pakenham library. Pulker-Mok thanked the community, fellow council members and staff for their patience and understanding. "I am so thankful for the experience, knowledge and leadership around this table and for having had the opportunity to serve our community alongside each and every one of you," she said to her colleagues. Wilkinson was first elected to Mississippi Mills council in 2003. She did not seek re-election. She holds

the creation of the Community Official Plan, hiring a cultural co-ordinator, Almonte Old Town Hall renovations, new sewage plant, Gemmill Park upgrades, Pakenham library expansion and the retention of Pakenham Public School as some major accomplishments during her terms. "I regard the (Almonte) Riverwalk and the Heritage Conservation District in downtown Almonte as major achievements, likewise the waterfront park in Riverfront Estates subdivision," she continued. "It took a lot of negotiation to persuade a developer to remove houses one by one from the edge of the river ..." Wilkinson said the job of councillor is like no other and you learn as you go. "When you run for council there are no specific qualifications, no interviews and no CV, yet suddenly you have to make decisions on expensive projects and crucial planning proposals, not only at the council table but on numerous town and county committees and boards," she explained. "You learn as you go. I want to thank councillors, staff, volunteers and residents for their friendship and support, and for teaching me so much through 15 truly enjoyable years."

DANUBE MEANDERS THROUGH 10 EUROPEAN NATIONS JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT A VISIT TO THE PICTURESQUE OLD TOWN OF ULM JEFF MAGUIRE Column

There is something about the Danube River that makes it a favourite sightseeing stop for people touring Europe. Given the early onset of winter here I must admit that thinking about an afternoon stroll along the "Blue Danube" is particularly uplifting! The river isn't hard to find. The Danube flows for

2,850 kilometres (1,770 miles) and meanders through 10 countries, more than any other river in the world. The source of the Danube River is located in the small German city of Donaueschingen, just north of the border with Switzerland. Kathleen and I have visited Donaueschingen during our time in Germany. It is a picturesque place set in a valley among the low mountains of the southern Black Forest. In the company of our good friends and longtime travel companions Frank and Wendy LeBlanc, we drove to Donaueschingen on a Saturday. The town's market is a bustling place which we thoroughly enjoyed touring. The main reason for

our visit was to see the source of the Danube. Unfortunately the actual viewing site, located on the grounds of the local palace, was undergoing renovations and was off-limits to visitors at the time. However it is a major tourist attraction and signage directed us to the local museum where a "temporary source" had been set up. This has become an "injoke" with the four of us. We laugh every time we think about it. Because the "source of the Danube" was actually just a raised display case in the middle of the floor with a viewing port at the centre. Visitors could look through the port and into a rather deep passage resplendent with flashing lights. At the bottom was a blue "water

flow" which, temporarily at least, purported to be the river source. With apologies to the good people of Donaueschingen, it was pretty hokey actually! Our visit was in the fall of 2013. Frank and Wendy have been back more recently and they say the newly rebuilt official source of the Danube ("Donau" in German) is looking pretty spiffy these days. While planning our recent fall vacation in Germany, France and Switzerland Wendy asked if we would be interested in spending a day and a night in the city of Ulm which is located on the Danube. The city of 125,000 is just over an hour northwest of Munich where we began our excursion in late September. We enthusiastical-

ly agreed! Ulm is in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The rivers Blau and Iller are tributaries of the larger Danube which also flow through the city. Most of Ulm, including the picturesque old town, hugs the left bank of the Danube. On the other side of the Danube is the twin city of Neu-Ulm (population 50,000) which is in the state of Bavaria. The medieval city wall has been rebuilt and runs along the Danube, offering beautiful views along the river and across it to Bavaria. Behind the city wall, in the old town, are some wonderfully rebuilt halftimbered buildings which are a hallmark of Germany. Sadly an Allied bombing raid in December 1944

resulted in the destruction of 80 per cent of the medieval city centre. Some buildings were painstakingly restored although much of the area was rebuilt in 1950s and 1960s style. If you are looking to stroll along the Danube there is no better place to do it than in picturesque Ulm. For more about our visit to the city please read the online version of this column at www.insideottawavalley.com. Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com.

Submitted/CPDMH Foundation A look at Chloe Adams' winning artwork, which was created with pencil crayons. and she speaks very highly of Mullally, the same art teacher she has had since grade 9. Her art class even travelled together on a cultural trip to visit many of the art galleries and museums in Spain. Adams loves art so much that she aspires to pursue a career in animation. "I just love art and telling stories," she commented. "The animation career is a perfect blend of what I love the most ... art and storytelling." "You can say a lot with a picture," she continued. "I drew a deer for the Christmas card because they are peaceful in nature and are calming. This is the emotion I wanted to portray as it is just like our doctors and caring hospital staff." "Chloe Adams is an amazingly talented student from our community," Arseneau noted. " ... we are honoured to showcase her artistic creation during this year's Season of Giving so that it can inspire others in our community to invest in the future with a gift to support local health care." Upon winning the art contest, Adams was given a certificate of appreciation from the CPDMH Founda-

tion and provided a private tour of the hospital. In addition to having her artwork featured on the CPDMH Foundation's Christmas card, Adams will also be receiving her own batch of Christmas cards to give to family and friends. Adams said that her participation in the contest has helped her learn more about the importance of supporting her local hospital. "No one really thinks about the equipment at the hospital and that it is paid for by the community until they need to use it ... When you're in pain and you're looking for help, the hospital is always there. It is so nice that people help to give back and make this possible." The Season of Giving campaign seeks to raise funds for the purchase of modern and up-to-date patient care equipment for CPDMH. Arseneau said a total of 16,000 cards will be distributed throughout the catchment area with many having already arrived in mailboxes. A few months ago, Chloe Adams was encouraged by her fine arts teacher, Leydin Mullally, to submit a piece for the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH) Foundation's student art contest. She sat down with her finely sharpened pencil crayons and began layering techniques with a drawing of a buck, then added Christmas decor, a winter scene and finally holly. The 16-year-old grew up on a farm outside of Ashton and was inspired to create the nature scene because she wanted to show a peaceful and calming side of Christmas. Adams, who attends grade 11 at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville, has entered art contests before, but she never thought that her artwork could inspire and make a difference in the lives of others. Now, her artwork is being seen by tens of thousands throughout the area through the CPDMH Foundation's Christmas mail appeal campaign. According to the CPDMH Foundation executive director, Robyn Arseneau, the contest was promoted at each high school within the hospital's catchment area (Carleton Place to Ottawa West) in September and opened to local youth aged 12 to 17. After last year's winning submission by Notre Dame Catholic High School grade 8 student, Brooklyn Kentfield, the mail appeal received a lot of positive feedback. This is now the second year that the CPDMH Foundation has involved the youth of the community in the art contest. A self-taught artist, art runs in Adams' family with her mother being a graphic designer and her cousin an artist. Her favourite subjects in school are fine arts, visual arts and media arts

Jingle bells, Jingle bells! Jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh! A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride, And soon Miss Fannie Bright

Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, Misfortune seem’d his lot He got into a drifted bank, And we, we got up-sot. (Repeat Chorus) Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight, And sing the sleighing song. Just get a bob-tailed nag, Two forty for his speed, Then hitch him to an open sleigh, And crack! you’ll take the lead. (Repeat Chorus)

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com A former Perth resident is hoping to set up a tiny homes commune. Jordan Naomi Chambers, who now lives in Almonte, is working on a business plan to buy up some land where tiny homes and even old shipping containers, converted into residences, could be set up for people dealing with environmental sensitivities. The community would also be a place for residents to learn life skills, and even grown food, some of which could be donated to area food banks, a "people feeding people farm," she explained during an interview at the North Market Café in Almonte on Tuesday, Nov. 20. "You get the time to recoup in an (environmentally) clean home." She is looking at land in either Lanark Highlands Township or Mississippi Mills to set up this community, and she sees it as a chance to compliment institutions like homeless shelters. "We do need shelters, in the short term," she stressed. But for a lot of the people she is looking to help, getting them back to the land would help them heal from their environmental illnesses, which would most likely then lead to better mental and physical health outcomes. As an ex-contractor herself, "I can tell certain things about houses," such as what works, and what does not.

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Jordan Naomi Chambers stands on Mill Street in Almonte, at Centennial Square, on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 20. She would like to see the laws around where tiny homes can be placed, because she admittedly that she naively "thought I could put a bunch of tiny houses on a small plot of land." It's not that easy, and "laws absolutely need to be changed for this." She already has about $4,000 on a GoFundMe page for this initiative.

Perth problems "I'd been screaming for help for six years," when she lived in Ottawa. The most that ever seemed to be done there was that her name would be written down on a notepad at Ottawa City Hall, and nothing was ever done. "Nobody was listening," she said. She moved from place to place about 12 times before landing in Perth, losing two pets from what she said were environmentally unsafe apartments. A Realtor she had been working with in Ottawa told her about an apartment that had opened up in Perth in the vicinity of St. John Catholic Elementary

School. The apartment had come on the market because the lady had died of lung cancer. "I got rid of everything, donated everything to an Indigenous youth shelter," she said, and began her move within 24 hours of getting the word. "We got there while they

It is an offence to plow, shovel or deposit snow from private entrances across or onto municipal roadways. The penalty for non-conformance will be a fine and/or the vehicle towed away at the owner’s expense. Also, please note that the Township of Beckwith will not be responsible for damages to mail boxes, newspaper containers or other appurtenances that are privately owned and erected on Municipality right-of-ways and are damaged through winter snowplowing operations. Please remember to adjust your driving speed to suit the prevailing weather and road conditions.

TRIO OF FELINE SISTERS LOOKING FOR HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS The Lanark Animal Welfare Society is searching for homes (or one home) for a trio of feline sisters. These three girls are siblings found at the locks on Poonamalie Road. All are a bit shy, but like to be petted. They still need help getting socialized but would do better in a home where they can get constant attention with people. Two kittens are better than one, as they can play together and keep each other company, and in this case, three kittens would be great! Please contact the shelter to meet these beautiful girls.

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY AT MIKE FAIR’S WITH PRE-OWNED PRICE REDUCTIONS Submitted/UCDSB Almonte District High School was one of 15 schools chosen for the Power of Ideas Tour that visited the school on Nov. 21 and 22. ADHS EXPERIENCES POWER OF IDEAS TOUR Upper Canada District School Board's Almonte District High School (ADHS) was one of 15 schools chosen this year for the Power of Ideas Tour that visited the school on Nov. 21 and 22. The Power of Ideas Exhibition is an engaging and immersive experience created by Perimeter Institute that travels to chosen schools across Ontario. The tour started as a Canada 150 initiative and it is about inspiring youth to believe they can be leaders in innovation through science, technology, engineering and mathe-

matics. It gives high school students and their families a fun, hands-on approach to engaging with the process of science. On the first day of the tour at the school, ADHS students had the chance to engage in experiments focusing on topics such as colliding particles, black holes, cosmic speed limits and gravity. They were free to jump from station to station and had professionals there to explain each topic. In the evening, the public was invited to attend. The high school also invited lo-

cal schools to participate in this experience on Nov. 22. Grade 5 and 6 students from Pakenham Public School, R. Tait McKenzie Public School, Naismith Memorial Public School and Holy Name of Mary Catholic School ventured out to experience the Power of Ideas set up. "This was a unique opportunity for our students and community," said ADHS principal Nancy Holman. "We are grateful for the opportunity to host this event." were still painting. One thing I noticed was mould all over the walls. I didn't say anything. They (the painters) painted over it." Within a short time after she moved in, her dog, a miniature poodle, began scratching himself, and she developed breathing issues. A portion of the ceiling came in one day, bringing down mould and asbestos on her, making her black out. Both in Perth and in Ottawa, she was dealing with blackouts, hives, insomnia (being unable to sleep for 17 days at one stretch), paranoia and a loss of appetite. "I was afraid to eat because of what was going on with my body," she said. She was even confined to a wheelchair at one point. There was no heat either in her place, and she used the oven to heat her apartment, until that broke too.

Moving out She soon moved out into a tent in a friend's backyard near the Perth fairgrounds. "There was a safety in that backyard," she said. In time, she saved up money to buy a second-hand car, and lived in that. "It was roof over my head," she said. "The longer I was outside, the better I felt. I felt good." She now has a new place in Almonte, "and I am doing much better ... It's a very nice place. No complaints," she said. Throughout her experience, she got to see firsthand the challenges women living with housing insecurity face. "This is a problem for women," she said. Some men would invite her to stay with them in their spare room, and then "they kept approaching me for sex," she said. At one point, she had to barricade the door to keep one persistent pervert out of her room. "I don't want anyone to go through what I've gone through." While she may not have been heard in Ottawa, that changed once she moved to Lanark County.

"I've got more response from the rural areas," she said. This past August, she contacted Perth Town Hall, and got in touch with Mayor John Fenik in August. "I dropped to my knees in front of Fenik in his office," said Chambers. She had received a call back from his office an hour after she visited the town hall. Fenik heard her out, and even went to Gatineau, Que., to look at a tiny house with her. "He stepped up and he listened," she said. "He took time and I appreciate that." Keeping a positive attitude has proved to be instrumental in her struggle to break free. "I've stayed positive through all of this ... There is no point in anger," said Chambers. "I do have my off days. I am physically and emotionally exhausted from the summer." But in the end, "it's not about me. It's about the end game now," of a tiny home commune.

Cornerstone Landing support Cornerstone Landing Youth Services is "definitely interested in the tiny homes community" idea, said executive director Terrilee Kelford during a telephone interview on Monday, Nov. 26. In fact, her organization tried to get a similar idea off the ground in Smiths Falls off the ground earlier this year, asking the town council to "gift" them some land where they could put down about four tiny homes. However, that would require a site specific zoning amendment, so, she returned to council and asked them to change their bylaws regarding tiny homes across town. "We need the town to be proactive about this," said Kelford. About 60 per cent of her youth housing cases come from Smiths Falls and while the town's economic pros-

pects continue to grow, with increased prosperity comes a rise in housing costs. "This is great. We all want development," said Kelford, of the town's sudden burst of good fortune, but this has a direct impact on the most vulnerable who can barely sustain housing in the private market as it is. While the recent municipal elections have seen the issue slow down around council chambers, she is hoping that the matter will be revisited once new councils are sworn in in early December. Even so, Tay Valley Township has taken the lead, allowing tiny homes to be placed there - in fact, they even sought out Kelford's input while they were drafting the bylaw. Away from Lanark County however, Kelford said she is worried about the "systemic structures that keep people out of affordable houses." For example, "new, tiny homes, banks and CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) will not finance them ... you can't get a mortgage." Chambers' idea for a tiny homes commune might be one solution to help with the housing crisis, for people who might have mental health or environmental issues. For example, people suffering from paranoia and social anxiety might not like to live in an apartment building, where "you can hear every conversation your neighbours are having, you can smell every meal they are cooking," she said. As such, a tiny home might be right for them, whereas a young person without these issues would feel more comfortable in an apartment. Everyone, she feels, has "a right to live in a home of their choice." Kelford did speak with Chambers last week, and "Jordan's case is a perfect case" of housing insecurity, she said. "We need towns to be proactive on this."

STAIRWELL CAROLLERS HOLIDAY CONCERT DEC. 9 Residents of Carleton Place, you are in for a treat this Christmas season. On Dec. 9, you will be playing host to some of the finest choral musicians in the Ottawa Valley. In celebration of their 41st season, Pierre Massie and his award-winning Ottawa choir, the Stairwell Carollers, invite you to come and hear their concert of Christmas carols, old and new, at St. James Anglican Church. Massie has prepared a special program this season. "As we enter our 41st year of singing, I felt it would be nice to return to a more traditional repertoire, bringing back tried and true arrangements of some of our most familiar carols." The choir will be sing-

ing audience favourites like our concert opener Veni, veni Emmanuel, Carol of the Bells, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Stille Nacht, Quelle est cette odeur agréable, along with a few modern gems like O nata lux by Morten Lauridsen. In addition, the concert will feature three new songs by current choir members: Massie's fresh arrangement of Hark the Herald Angels Sing, David Rain's setting of the medieval song, In natali Domini, and rollicking concert finale, Sans Day Carol, by bass Terry Brynaert. Brynaert's piece has become a choir favourite. "I am over the moon excited, as this will be the first piece of mine ever to be sung in public, and I have

dedicated it to Pierre and everyone who has ever sung with the Stairwell Carollers, past and present," he said. Come hear a cappella singing at its finest at the Stairwell Carollers Christmas concert, Veni Emmanuel, at St. James Anglican Church, 225 Edmund St., Carleton Place. The show begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door or in advance at the church office, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 613-257-3178 or email office@stjamescarletonplace.ca. DEATH NOTICE

DEATH NOTICE

(Nana, Mum), died peacefully in Victoria General Hospital November 7th, 2018 at the age of 93. Joan was admitted the day before, after a fall in her beloved home at Jeskin Aerie Assisted Living. Left with a fractured pelvis the doctor felt would heal in time, her death was unexpected and likely from cardiac arrest. Surrounded by family just hours before she passed on, Joan shared many stories from days gone by in her typical cheerful manner. Joan often expressed gratitude for living a long and happy life with few regrets. In those last few hours she focused on family and reminded us to “never forget to cross your t’s and dot your i’s.” She had no unfinished business. Born October 14th, 1925 in Duncan BC, Joan grew up mostly in Victoria. One night in 1947, at the Roller Bowl in Victoria, she met a young sailor from Royal Roads. Three months later, at age 22, she married Stanley Mitchell and soon afterwards Joan and her sailor moved to Halifax NS, to begin raising a family. Joan was the quintessential Navy Wife: ready, steady, resourceful, loving and strong willed. She had to be: raising 3 boys and a girl, much of the time alone while Stanley was at sea. The family lived in Halifax, Ottawa, Victoria and Burlington. In retirement Stan and Joan lived at their Otty Lake cottage, Mission Texas, Saudi Arabia and Victoria. The two of them were warmly social and made many friends everywhere they went. Joan/Mum/Nana was predeceased by Stanley in 2005 and youngest son Bryan in 2011. She is survived by children: Rodney (Heidi), Bruce, Robyn (Gary), grandchildren: Victoria (Steven), Heather (David), Kathleen (Shayne), William (Allyce), great Grandchildren James and Chloe, sisters-in-law Evelyn and Audrey and nieces: Leslie, Joy, Debbie, Tracey, Nancy, Erica and Ingrid. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Jesken Aerie for the warm friendship and nurturing care that enriched Joan’s last years. Also to the staff at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital for the compassion and professionalism they have shown to our Mum and Nana both of late and over the years. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in Victoria at a later date and next summer at Otty Lake. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Jesken Aerie of M’akola Housing Society in Victoria BC, or The Great War Memorial of Perth District Hospital Foundation in Perth, Ontario. IN MEMORIAM

COYLES - In loving memory of a dear son, Michael who passed away November 29, 2014. One gift above all others, God gives to us to treasure, One that knows no time, or place, And one gold cannot measure. The precious, poignant tender gift, Of memory, that will keep, Our dear ones ever in our hearts, Although God gives them sleep.

BARNETT, Janice - In loving memory of a dear sister who passed away November 22, 2007. If roses grow in Heaven Lord, Please pick a bunch for us, Place them in my sister’s arms, And tell her they’re from us. Tell her that we love and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her for awhile. Because remembering her is easy, We do it every day, But there’s an ache within our hearts, Because we are missing her today. Miss You Always Linda, Art Greg, Tara Sherry, Adam Gage

It brings back long remembered things, A song, a word, a smile, And our world’s a better place because, We had them - for a while. Forever loved and missed, Mom IN MEMORIAM

The town of Carleton Place will observe its bicentennial in 2019. During the community issues meeting on Nov. 20, Coun. Sean Redmond, a member of the municipal heritage and 200th anniversary committees, noted a number of events are planned to celebrate the milestone. Moreover, a collectible item, a celebration package, was created, with its sales benefitting the programming and festivities of the occasion. "We have a wonderful package you can buy for a mere $20," Redmond stated. "You get a program, a button and a calendar, which is just amazing." He added: "It shows 12 months of then and now photos ... a beautiful mix of past and present photos." The packages are available at the following loca-

tions: Carleton Place & Beckwith Heritage Museum, 267 Edmund St.; Carleton Place & District Chamber of Commerce, 170 Bridge St.; Carambeck Community Centre, 351 Bridge St.; and Neelin Street Community Centre (arena), 75 Neelin St. "They are going fast," Redmond said, and "they make great Christmas gifts." The commemorative package was made possible through the sponsorship of local businesses and organizations. Many of the photos in the almanac were taken by Carleton Place 200th photographers Robert McDonald, John Rayber and Nick Boborhuk. The Carleton Place & Beckwith Heritage Museum, Ocean Wave Fire Company and Carleton Place Jr. A Canadians submitted pictures, as well. An associated booklet,

32 pages of historic photographs and material, begins with a welcome message from longtime Carleton Place resident and community volunteer Ormond Giles. Giles chaired the committee for the town's 150th anniversary, which took place in 1969. "I invite you to explore the rich heritage, scenic beauty and optimistic future of Carleton Place by visiting our historic town and by participating in the many special activities planned throughout 2019 to commemorate our 200th anniversary," he wrote. Carleton Place, originally called Morphy's Falls, was first settled in 1819 by the families of Edmond Morphy and William Moore. Prior, the Algonquin inhabited the area. The community was incorporated as a village separate from the township of Beckwith in 1870, and then as a town in 1890. Coun. Theresa Fritz chaired the community issues meeting. It was the committee's final gathering of the current council term.

Santa Claus stopped in Carleton Place for the annual Santa Claus parade on Saturday, Nov. 24, and enthusiastic parade goers lined the route three deep despite the rain. Presented by the Downtown Carleton Place Business Improvement Association (BIA), the parade began at Townline Road and travelled the full length of Bridge Street, ending near FreshCo on

Lansdowne Avenue. The theme of this year's parade was Christmas Carols, with participants taking their floats to the next level. As usual, the Santa Claus Parade supported the Lanark County Food Bank the Hunger Stop as well as the Carleton Place Christmas Basket Fund, with the Carleton Place and District Civitan Club collecting nonperishable food items and money along the route. Announced on the food bank's Facebook page, the

Civitan club delivered nearly 1,300 pounds of food. New this year, the parade was live streamed, an initiative led by the Carleton Place & District Chamber of Commerce. SHM+D LIVE did the work. BIA co-ordinator Kate Murray called the parade "a huge success." "The parade floats were crazy awesome this year ... really, it was nuts!" she said. "I was so impressed." It will be a few days before the parade's best overall entry is announced.

REASON FOR MOTHER'S TEARS REMAINED A MYSTERY WORDS OF JOY AND SADNESS FILLED HER DIARIES, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

The two coal oil lamps sat on the table, one at either end, giving off a small circle of light, that barely lit that corner of the kitchen. Over the table, hanging from the ceiling, was the Coleman lamp that was only lit when we had company. The little fragile wicks were too expensive to waste on family evenings only. I could sense that all was not well. Mother was hunched over her diary, and I could see the pencil moving quickly, as if she had to get something down

in a hurry. Everyone but Father was sitting around the big pine table, busy with our own amusements, as we did every night after everything had been redded up. Audrey and I were thumbing through the Eaton's catalogue, but I wasn't paying attention. My eyes were on Mother. Often she would write, pause a bit, and look up at the ceiling as if searching for the next word to write in her diary. But that night, there was no pausing. She was writing quickly, and once a page was filled, she flipped it over, and started anew. She wasn't really writing in a diary. It wasn't like the one Santa had brought me for Christmas ... a little red satin cover book with a gold clasp and its very own key. No, Mother's diaries were scribblers bought at the one-cent sale at the drugstore. The covers looked like black oilcloth,

and as soon as one was filled, it was put into the kitchen cupboard, not to be touched by anyone but Mother. I had no idea what she wrote, but scarcely a night went by that she wasn't bent over her diaries at the kitchen table. That night, she seemed a million miles away. Often, she would write a few words, and then chuckle to herself. This night was different. Then I saw a tear roll down her cheek. She brushed it away quickly and kept at her frantic writing. What could she be putting down on paper? If it was upsetting, why did she write it in the first place? My sister noticed it, too, but said nothing. I shifted on the bench, and Audrey seemed to know that I was about to ask Mother if there was something wrong. Audrey put her hand on my arm, and I knew she was telling

me to say nothing. The frantic writing went on. My brothers were too busy at their own projects to take notice, and Father, sitting by the stove with the Ottawa Farm Journal, had fallen asleep. It was just my sister and I who could see the gentle tears on Mother's face. Audrey made a big production of turning the pages of the catalogue and in a voice that was more shrill than usual, began pointing out things we could buy if money was no object. I tried to be interested, but it was so unusual for Mother to ever shed a tear, that my heart was heavy, and it was all I could do to sit quietly and say nothing. Then the old CPR clock over the icebox struck, and it was time for bed. My three brothers raced for the stairs, Father roused from his chair at the stove, and Audrey closed the catalogue and nudged me

away from the table. Mother closed her diary and put her opened hands on its cover and just sat there looking around the kitchen, almost as if she was seeing it for the first time. When I went to bed, I couldn't put out of my mind what I had seen at the kitchen table. What had Mother written that had caused her to shed a tear? Audrey wouldn't talk about it and told me not to worry about it. Mother would be fine, she said. The next morning, when I came down for breakfast, there was Mother making porridge at the Findlay Oval. She was whistling, as she often did while working around the kitchen. What had caused her sadness the night before? Whatever it was, she had tucked it away and taken on another day on the farm which had become her home after many years of

living in a big city. Little did I know that it would be decades before I would know what Mother would write in her diaries ... words of joy, words of gratitude, but often words of sadness would fill the pages. The Canadian Gazette in conjunction with the Carleton Place & District Chamber of Commerce will be selling and producing the Carleton Place & District Community Guide for 2019.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
