Divorce and your pension: it could be
your greatest asset
Sarah Jackson, Head of Family Law at BLB Solicitors in Bradford on Avon, reveals that the most valuable asset on divorce may not be what you think.
A
n overriding concern of all those considering divorce is that they get a fair share of the assets and most believe their home to be their most valuable. But we should not forget our pensions. It is quite common that a person’s pension is worth more than the rest of his or her assets put together, and this impacts both parties in a divorce. Regardless of how a couple wishes to deal with their pensions on divorce, the value of all pensions must be disclosed to the court before a financial settlement order is made. Pensions therefore cannot be ignored. You may choose to share a pension after divorce by way of a pension sharing order. This is
where a proportion of the pension (a credit) is transferred into a pension fund in the recipient’s name, leaving the donating spouse with a reduced fund. Alternatively you may agree a ‘pension off-set’ where one spouse retains (more of) the pension and the other more of the other assets. A third option is pension attachment. It is imperative to get legal advice from a specialist divorce lawyer as the implications of each of these options so that you can choose the one most appropriate for you. In some cases, the value of a pension (known as the cash equivalent transfer value or CETV) provided by the pension company doesn’t accurately
Contact us now to arrange an initial consultation Sarah Jackson sarah.jackson@blbsolicitors.co.uk
reflect the true value of the pension; it is not uncommon for a pension company to significantly underestimate the retirement benefits. A specialist divorce lawyer will be able to help you find out if this is the case with yours or your spouse’s pension. At BLB we work closely with pension actuaries and tax advisers to ensure our clients get the best possible outcome. There are special considerations to be had where a pension is already being paid or if the pension-holding spouse wishes to take an early lump sum, which can be taken now from age 55. Dealing with pensions on divorce is a complicated business and getting it right, particularly when your pension is your most valuable asset, is of paramount importance.

CHARITY FEATURE
Transforming Lives
J
amie’s Farm transforms the lives of vulnerable inner-city children, at risk of social and academic exclusion, through a unique residential experience combining 'family, farming and therapy'. Children are involved with the running of their working livestock farms, in either Wiltshire or Herefordshire, and take part in farming, cooking, gardening, carpentry, log chopping, and horse care. The week is punctuated by 1:1 and reflective group sessions, and in order to ensure their impact is sustained, they provide a followup programme with schools and training for visiting staff. The charity was set up by local resident, Jamie Feilden, who found that taking lambs into the disadvantaged Croydon School he was teaching at, considerably improved the behaviour, attendance and positive relationships of his most ‘at-risk’ students. In 2006 with the help of his mother Tish, a trained Psychotherapist, Jamie brought various groups of children to his family farm in

Warleigh. In 2009 they set up the charity and purchased the Farm they are currently based at in Box. This year they opened a second site in Herefordshire to double their impact and have also developed an urban farm in Warterloo to deepen their impact on the children who visit them from London. To date they have worked with over 2,750 children, and demonstrated sustained improvements in children's soft skills such as self-esteem, fewer fixed term and permanent exclusions and re-engagement with education. Through their approach, Jamie’s Farm provides an innovative, preventative solution to the number of children permanently excluded from education and the long term cost of this to society and themselves. CHARITY FEATURE who donated 130 separate pieces of different media. Each piece was signed, but only on the back so that the creator was kept secret until after purchase. The Art Festival was opened on 4 September, hosted by The Weaving Shed, and continued for two weeks. All of the works are still available to view on the Bradford on Avon Arts Festival website. There you can also find a few remaining pieces for purchase.
Big gift from ‘Small’ exhibit Dorothy House Hospice Care gratefully received a cheque from the Bradford on Avon Arts Festival on Thursday, November 12. The generous donation to the Hospice came after an outstanding arts festival, held in September, which drew an enthusiastic crowd who bid on the small works of unique art!
The outstanding turn-out of visitors and the sales from the works of art has enabled the Bradford on Avon Arts Festival to make a notable donation of over £500 to Dorothy House Hospice Care, the chosen local charity of the Festival. Dorothy House is grateful for the efforts of the Bradford on Avon Arts Festival and their compassionate fundraising in aid of their local Hospice.
The exhibition, called 'Small & Beautiful’, organised by committee member and artist, Alex Kay, hosted at the Weaving Shed. This exhibit featured CD-case sized original artworks from over 40 different artists

Shopping Locally

ith Christmas coming what better time to shop locally in Bradford
on Avon?
If you are looking for something special, the Town can offer you everything for Christmas. Presents, cards, decorations, food and drink, can all be bought here and you will be supporting local, individual shops. There is also a great choice of places to eat and drink from pubs to cafes to restaurants where you can take a break. By shopping locally you avoid the Christmas rush in other places with packed car parks and shops, as well as crowded buses and trains. Take the stress out of Christmas shopping and enjoy the special atmosphere of the Town at this time of year. Trolleys are a good alternative to weighing yourself down with shopping bags. You can move your purchases more easily and get them home without using the car. Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon will market a trolley in the New Year to make easier shopping without a car. There are good alternatives to driving into town and trying 24

to find a parking space. Don’t forget the hourly local bus 9 and the half hourly 265. For more information on these services and other local buses go to the Connecting Wiltshire website. Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon is committed to making the Town carbon neutral by 2050. We want to reduce the amount of traffic within the Town and encourage people to shop locally and either walk or cycle to the Town’s shops or to www.alocallife.co.uk
use public transport, as much as possible. A recent survey has shown that most traffic is generated from within the Town or close by. Reduction in car use will make pedestrians feel safer, and carbon emissions will be lower. Carbon is a major contributor to the ‘greenhouse’ gases, the increase of which has led to climate change. We believe that climate change is the single most important issue the world is facing. Any such change in personal travel behaviour will help to slow down the effects. Serves 4-6
beef wellington “ An impressive alternative to the Christmas Turkey” METHOD 1.

For the mushroom duxelle, heat the butter and vegetable oil in a frying pan. Once hot, add the chopped shallots and fry, stirring all the time, for two minutes. Tip in the chopped mushrooms. Reduce the heat a little and continue stirring and cooking for about ten minutes until the mushrooms are softened and their liquid has evaporated. Stir in the cream and cook for a further two minutes, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. For the Wellington, heat the oil in a frying pan over a high heat. Season the fillet all over with salt and pepper.
3.
4.
Once the oil is smoking, add the beef and fry on all sides until browned. Remove and leave to cool. (NB. Don’t wash up the pan. Use this to make the Madeira and port reduction later.)
5.
Carefully roll the side closest to you over the meat encasing it within the crêpes and mushrooms. The crêpes should cover the meat on all sides, but trim off any excess.
Place the crêpes onto the work surface, one layer thick, but overlapping - you need to create an area about twice the thickness of the fillet, and about 2.5cm/1in longer at each end. Spread the mushroom duxelle over the crêpes.
6.
Place the wrapped fillet onto a sheet of clingfilm and wrap up tightly into a cylinder. Set aside in the fridge until completely cold, about half an hour.
7.
Meanwhile for the potato dauphinoise, preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas 2.
Lightly pat the fillet with kitchen paper to remove any excess moisture, before placing the meat on top of the duxelle.
8.
Rub the inside of a deep baking dish or casserole with the raw garlic.
9.
Place the sliced potatoes in
www.alocallife.co.uk
RECIPE a bowl and pour over the cream and season. Stir to coat the potatoes, then lay them evenly in the garlicky baking dish. 10. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and cook for a further 20-30 minutes while you prepare the Wellington. 11. Roll the pastry out on a well-floured surface to a rectangle with a thickness of about 3mm. 12. Brush the pastry with beaten egg yolk. Remove the clingfilm from the beef fillet and place onto the middle of the pastry. 13. Wrap the pastry up over the beef fillet. Lightly stretch one edge of the seam so that it is not too thick, then press down firmly to seal. 14. You should be left with a tube that is open at either end. Lightly press the ends of the pastry together using a rolling pin to seal and thin the two pieces. Then with a small knife, trim the edges on each side to form a triangle shape. Brush the triangle of pastry with a little egg and press it up against the side of the Wellington. Repeat with the other side before flipping over so that the Wellington is seam-side down. 15. Place your Wellington onto a baking tray, brush with the remaining egg yolk set aside in the fridge to chill for 5-10 minutes.
16. Increase the oven temperature to 180C/350F/ Gas 4 (the dauphinoise should remain in the oven).
INGREDIENTS
17. Remove the Wellington from the fridge and score a pattern of your choice onto the top.
1 tbsp vegetable oil
18. Place in the oven with the potatoes dauphinoise and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the Wellington from the oven and leave to rest for 10 minutes. This should give you a perfectly pink finish to your meat. If you prefer it more cooked, then leave in the oven for longer, but you must ensure the meat is well rested. 19. For the Madeira and port reduction, heat the butter in the same pan in which you cooked the beef fillet over a medium heat. Once bubbling, add the shallot and fry for 3-4 minutes, or until softened. 20. Increase the heat and add the port and Madeira. Simmer until the volume of liquid has reduced by half and then add the stock. Reduce again by half. When the sauce has a thick, syrupy consistency, strain through a fine sieve. Stir in the truffle peelings and keep warm until ready to serve. 21. Serve slices of the beef Wellington with the potato dauphinoise alongside and the Madeira and port reduction.

Local, organic - seasonal Earlier this year, Alice Boden’s fruit and veg delivery service, Bodice of Holt transformed like a beautiful, determined butterfly in to Mayfield Organics. This independent, family run business first spread its wings in 2012, borne out of a passion to connect with other like-minded suppliers to provide local, organic and seasonal fruit and veg to the community. “ It’s all about making small growers produce accessible to our customers. We hope that by offering tailor-made fruit and veg crates coupled with our personable service, we can help people save money, get creative and improve their diet by eating seasonally and organically. It’s convenience with a conscience!” Alice believes her bespoke service offering up local and seasonal produce, is key to nurturing more sustainable and mindful communities. With fewer pesticides, produce being picked at it’s prime and the Mayfield team doing the leg work for you, it’s a great way to make small changes which in the end, result in a big positive impact on our own health and that of the environments. Along with the re-branding of the business, come some other additions like inspiring recipe cards from in house chef Beth of Beth’s Bakes and some exciting catering events being prepared for 2016. Tax Returns, Budget 2015 and other Interesting Developments! now is the time to get all of the paperwork ready and to talk to an adviser.
I
t is nearly 8 months since BJP Finance opened its head office in Bradford on Avon and the firm of Chartered accountants and trusted business advisers are gearing up for the busy tax returns season. With the deadline for online submission of tax returns being 31 January 2016,
Ben Potter, Director of BJP Finance commented ‘The benefit of getting assistance from a professional adviser with your tax return is that they will give you the peace of mind that the return is submitted correctly and on time. A chartered accountant will also have the most up to date knowledge of the relevant tax rules and be able to ensure that all the reliefs that are available to you are claimed, which should help save you money.’ The summer budget 2015 also threw up some major taxation No46 Winter 2015/16
developments with significant changes to dividend income being introduced early next year that will particularly impact owner managed Limited Companies. There are also changes planned to mortgage interest relief for landlords so now is the time to start talking to an adviser about these changes and how they impact you. Ben and the team would welcome you to discuss any of the above or your general business and personal affairs at their offices on 34 Market Street so please call 01225 309219 to book an appointment. www.bjpfinance.com 37
