I
ts the Spring edition, like the clocks, we move forward to warmer moments and longer days into the land of Brexit and our own local elections again for town and county council coming Thursday, 4 May 2017. Theres still time to register, use it dont lose it! Theres been quite a lot of momentum with IDEAL Business Bradford who have grouped together to offer an independent option for these elections see page 35 for your options for representation. We get Upclose with local Bafta nominated director Frank W Smith from Woolley, and see what he’s been up to and doing stuff with Trowbridge Arts, a truly inspiring organisation open to everyone in the area. Prepare for easter treats and tweets with eggciting events and things to do including the BoA Duck Race and on Easter Monday, 17 April the BoA Lions Club Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bonnet competition. See whats on for a selection of events and things to do plus the highlight section for next 2 months and the forthcoming May bank holidays. In Food Idols we have 3 new things including Food Assembly. This is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and foodmakers. Don’t forget if you're a food producer in the area ‘Get on board’ and in touch to tell us what you're making. The recipe, this time, is from Hartley Farm Chilli, Lime and Coriander Spatchcock Chicken. I’d like to welcome new contributors to A Local Life and see Philip Shone come on board as a welcome extra set of hands. To sign off this edition take a look at Slice of Life at my local ramblings and ravings about the area and life in general. Camilla Editor a local life

A R E YO U P R E PA R E D F O R T H E CHANGES AHEAD?
The United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union brings a 43year association to its end. Parts of the transition period are likely to continue to be volatile for investors, and markets will not be fully at ease until there is more certainty about the timing and nature of the UK’s exit, and the details of its future trading agreements are known. Global markets have been turbulent since the referendum, while the pound has come under pressure, and there
is no denying that the Brexit result will continue to create disruption in the short term. But putting aside the recent volatility and taking a longterm view will help people plan more confidently for the future. Foo Fighters at the Cheese & Grain
F
rome’s Cheese & Grain was host to a remarkable surprise Foo Fighters concert last Friday as part of the publicity for their headlining announcement for Glastonbury Festival. The band, arguably the biggest rock band in the world, played an intimate 2.5 hour set to an appreciative crowd of 650. Most of the audience had been selected from the bands fan mailing list in a 50 mile radius of Frome, but a lucky 100 that had assembled outside the venue were allowed in on the night, much to their surprise and delight! The venue had been especially selected by the band and Glastonbury organisers as they did not want to play a big city venue. Tracey Rawlins, Marketing Manager, said that “The Foo Fighters were so friendly and gracious. They chatted to staff throughout the day and even sat in the café and had lunch, mingling with our staff and posing for photographs. They commented on how much they loved the venue and were very impressed that we are a not for profit social enterprise. Frontman, Dave Grohl personally promised to return as
he enjoyed playing in Frome so much.” Tickets were drawn in a big mysterious campaign which involved fans being sent boarding passes from the band, confirmation of where the concert was going to be held was not revealed until the day before the concert. Tracey explained that even the venue were not told until Thursday afternoon! “We knew we had potentially something big booked in as SJM had been to the venue a few times in the previous 8 weeks to run through their requirements with us. They wouldn’t reveal who it was though, but we like everyone speculated and we guessed that Glastonbury Festival was involved”. “We are so grateful to Emily Eavis, our patron, for putting us forward for this exciting event. It went like clockwork, all our staff worked hard and we thoroughly enjoyed working with SJM and Showsec. It has certainly put us on the map as a venue!”
“Dave
Grohl personally promised to return as he enjoyed playing in Frome so much.
”
Over 2.4 million watched the livestream on the internet with over 50,000 people watching since on YouTube. “We have seen a huge hike in our followers on Twitter, Facebook and our own mailing list over the weekend”. The waiting crowd which peaked at around 200 who assembled outside throughout the day were lovely, cheerful and polite and the venue are very grateful.

The Masonic Hall and Albert E Wallington
A
fter closure of the Boys Free Grammar School in 1903 The Hall became dilapidated and was put up for sale. The Masons took a short lease on the building, made it habitable and moved in permanently in 1913. In 1918 Alfred Wallington, a Mason, bought the whole building, completely renovated it and, with extreme generosity, donated it for joint use by the Masons and Holy Trinity Church. This act of philanthropy has benefited the Masons, the Church and the Town alike. Since acquiring the entire building in 2010, and taking on the considerable maintenance obligations, the Masons have decided to honour their benefactor by renaming the building, Wallington Hall. This beautiful grade II* building will continue to be hired out to the community as always. Its central position with nearby parking is ideal. Significant

investment is ongoing – central heating throughout, new folding tables, window cushions, curtains and comfortable chairs. Kitchen and toilets were recently upgraded. All proceeds from hire are ploughed back towards the considerable maintenance and improvement costs of the building. Donations by individual Masons and Lodges have been crucial to this venture.
Facilities for hire Upper Hall – 13m x 5.5m, beautiful beamed hall can accommodate approximately 65 seated or 120 standing. Ideal for family gatherings, parties, children’s events, book fairs, committee meetings, cultural and drama events, training, film and slide shows etc. Use of kitchen and central heating is included. Lower Hall – 6m x 5m, lovely committee room with large

mahogany table (seats 12) and chairs for small meetings, AGMs, small gatherings. Can be used in conjunction with outside terrace for sales displays etc. Space can also be doubled by drawing back folding doors if additional hiring arranged.
Hire charges Upper Hall £35 for first 2 hours. Each successive hour £6. Lower Hall £25 for first 2 Hours. Each successive hour £5 Extended lower hall by special arrangement. Inspirational People Take on Bath Half Marathon for Wiltshire Air Ambulance
M
ore than 50 people raised vital funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance by taking part in the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday (12 March 2017). Runners included former patients airlifted by Wiltshire Air Ambulance, all the funds raised will support the life-changing work the team do on a daily basis. This was the first half marathon for Stuart Hershbein, of Maiden Bradley and deputy leader of PE at Melksham Oak School. Stuart, 37, was airlifted by Wiltshire Air Ambulance on 6 September 2012 after suffering a life-threatening episode of fluid on the brain which required emergency surgery.
The Wiltshire Air Ambulance runners were supported and cheered on by staff and volunteers from the charity, plus Wilber the mascot. Some of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance runners before the start of Kenresa the Bath Half Marathon 2017 with the charity’s mascot Wilber. Stratford, Fundraising & for anyone in Wiltshire and Events Co-ordinator, said: “Our surrounding counties.” runners are an inspiration and we thank them for their amazing efforts. The dedication and commitment is truly outstanding and the money raised will help our helicopter and crew to keep flying and saving lives
Stuart said: “The half marathon was tough but the support and fellow runners kept me going. The atmosphere was absolutely superb. Four and a half years ago I couldn’t walk unaided and I was paralysed down my left side. When I crossed the finishing line I burst into tears, it was very emotional.” Shaun Fleming, Dlyan Jones, Sue Jones were also among the survivors taking part, along with Corporate Supporters Devizes based Resolution Design and Wiltshire Air Ambulance paramedic Fred Thompson and charity team member Valerie Whistler were also running for the first time.

Westdale Nurseries
W
estdale Nurseries was born when my parents Charlie and Eva Clarke bought their first plot of land on Jones’ Hill in 1947 where they built a bungalow and plant nursery after the war, and after sadly losing their firstborn, Margaret, at just twelve days old. Their business thrived and soon they were supplying large orders to big ships in Southampton for their décor. The site at Jones Hill was challenging especially in Winter due to its hillside position. During one particularly bad Winter my father nearly ended up in the frozen canal in his van after sliding down the hill, saved only by a low wall. With the need to expand, they looked hard for a more suitable site or for an existing nursery that they could make their own. It was a frustrating process and seemingly there was simply nowhere that was right for them until one evening when they sat down for tea and saw an advert in the paper for a plot of land. They called straight away and arranged to meet the landowner at the two-acre site on the other side of town, and after a walk around the site and a handshake to seal the deal the purchase was made. In 1954 the present site here on Holt Road started to take shape,

and over the years to come many crops were grown including pelargoniums, fuchsia, carnations, gerbera, and many varieties of bedding plants as well as many different fruit and vegetables. The plants were sold nationwide and won many prestigious awards at shows and exhibitions all around the country. After leaving school in 1967 I followed in my father’s footsteps and joined the business, marrying my wife Tricia soon after and starting our family. One day during the 1980s my parents took a holiday to the Canary Islands and fell in love with the beautiful Bougainvillea plant – widely regarded as the world’s most versatile and colourful plant, which they brought home and cultivated for themselves so that they could enjoy them at home in the UK, eventually building up a collection of over 100 stunning varieties. Since then, I have exhibited Bougainvillea at many large and internationally acclaimed exhibitions such as RHS Chelsea, and Hampton Court Palace, as

well as the Bath & West, Shrewsbury, and Southport in addition to receiving many export orders. Our plants are all grown on site, which allows us to keep our prices low. In recent years, we have welcomed several new businesses to our family here at Westdale including well-known dog grooming company ACE, pet cremation service Charlie’s Parlour who offer the only APPCC approved private pet cremation service in Wiltshire, chic Emporium The Shanty with its wide variety of stylish accessories and homewares, the warm and friendly Toni Lilley Hairdressing salon, NEET FEET chiropody services, talented seamstress Alexandra, and brand new café Beanz that offers both eat-in and delivery, and becomes the popular Wiltshire Kebab House takeaway service in the evening. westdalenurseries.co.uk

THE FOOD ASSEMBLY COMES TO BRADFORD ON AVON
A
s seen in national press, The Food Assembly is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and foodmakers. Every week Food Assembly customers in the surrounding areas can order food online from local food producers before picking it up weekly. All the food comes from an average distance of 10 miles, compared to hundreds of miles with a supermarket. Also, there is zero food waste as all the food is ordered in advance. The Food Assembly is run by Lee Morgan-Geer, a local urban farmer, based in Trowbridge, who can be seen at the Thursday morning market selling microgreens, healthy shoots, herbs and wheatgrass.
10-A-DAY? NO PROBLEM Writes Vicki Mowat, local Riverford veglady.
Recent scientific research suggests we should be eating 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day to help live a longer life. I’m a bit of a veg nerd, so I’ve put together some tips to pack more plants into your diet: •• Make veg the star of your dish, and you’ll find that the veg content naturally increases. Instead of eggs on toast for lunch, go for mushrooms or leeks instead. If you’re making a curry, pasta sauce or paella, make it really heavy on the veg and go light on the meat (or leave it out altogether). •• Go for veg-based snacks between meals – carrot sticks, sliced peppers and cherry tomatoes are all quick and easy ways to keep hunger at bay.
He is keen to engage the local community in local food, allow them to find out how it is grown, raised or made and give the amazing range of local farmers and producers a platform online to showcase their products and sell directly to the local people. Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly – By choosing to buy local, shoppers support the local community, every £1 spent through the Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy. Whether from their iPhone app or laptop, shoppers can choose from unique local products, such as artisan bread from The Oven; Quattro coloured eggs from New MacDonald’s Farm. Plenty of fresh local organic vegetables from Teeny Greeny
Farm, Grown Green and Mayfield Organic as well as grass fed beef boxes from Great Ashley Farm. Register at www.thefoodassembly.com for collection on Thursday evenings at the Mount Pleasant Centre or call Lee Morgan-Geer 07867 430453
•• Try replacing traditional carbs with something that counts towards your 10 a day: sweet potatoes or celeriac instead of regular potatoes, courgettes peeled into ribbons instead of spaghetti, blitzed and roasted cauliflower instead of rice. •• Make sure you’re getting plenty of variety. Lots of different vegetables look appealingly colourful, and will give you a wider range of vitamins and minerals. •• Don’t fret too much about exact portion sizes. A portion size is roughly what would fit on the palm of your hand. •• A well-stocked spice cupboard will keep things interesting. •• Fruit counts too, but it’s a good idea to limit it to around two or three portions a day.
No54 April/May 2017
•• A weekly vegbox, delivered to your door, will ensure you’ve always got lovely fresh produce in the fridge. •• Make use of online recipe resources. Riverford’s new recipe channel on YouTube has loads of short videos to inspire you to make a veg-packed quick supper. LOCAL ELECTIONS
Local Elections 4th May 2017 Dont miss your chance to choose who will represent you! Liberal Democrats stand for election representing a party with clear principles and a record of achievement in Bradford on Avon. Our constitution says: “Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community”. It speaks of “public services of the highest quality” and “a sense of partnership.” Our party’s values explain why our Town Council protected the Youth Centre and public toilets from closure by the County Council because of central government cuts. They also show why the town took over the Tourist Information Centre and initiated the community emergency volunteers. We look for innovative, practical solutions to challenges and work in partnership with other parties on town and county councils, for example in creating new 20mph zones. Our councillors have led in drawing up a neighbourhood plan to protect Bradford from uncoordinated development. As funding for local government gets tighter, politics matters more. As Liberal Democrats, we oppose the Conservative government’s cuts to local services and we have the expertise and relationships at town and county level to help protect Bradford from future threats. A vote for our candidates is a vote for a team with strong values, offering experience combined with the new energy needed to work for our wonderful town. Facebook: Bradford on Avon LibDems 01225 864214 boalibdems.org.uk
Over the last four years local Conservatives have been out knocking on doors listening to our residents and businesses. With record numbers of responses from our MP’s survey candidates have heard about most issues. Our positive campaign has highlighted issues such as traffic management, inappropriate development, speeds on main roads, parking and diverting HGV’s earlier away from our town. We can only solve the biggest issues by working closely with Wiltshire Council and being prepared to listen and compromise. The Town Council should be delivering a well run, efficient, professional Council. Communicating well and delivering its responsibilities on budget for its residents with strict scrutiny over any money spent on projects and grants. Initiatives like Branding and Signage have floundered. Working groups should be led by a councillor who pushes projects forward to completion. We have had four years of a few councillors chairing all the committees and working groups. Hopefully the next council will share the roles out leaving politics and personalities at the main door. We believe that you don’t have to spend thousands of £’s on projects to make lives easier. Improve what we have with small effective schemes, making better use of what we’ve got and keep it simple. We will never forget that it’s your money being spent. Cllr. Pam Hyde on behalf of our Conservative Candidates 07768 095507 pamc_hyde@hotmail.com No54 April/May 2017
IDEAL BRADFORD - The Town Council election on May 4th is a chance for people in Bradford on Avon to make our voices heard; a chance for us to choose representation at town level that works just for us. Not defending a record, local or national. Not toeing a party line. Not helping a local MP or Wiltshire Councillor get elected. Ideal Bradford is a team of local residents. We go to the same shops and pubs that you do. Our children go to the same schools. We have the same frustrations about how we see our town run, and we recognise the amazing work that so many people in this town do on a voluntary basis. Ideal Bradford wants to see a Town Council that provides real leadership and vision. That takes decisions after proper consultation with the whole town. That promotes Bradford to the surrounding area, and builds a more effective relationship with Wiltshire Council so we can get things done. We know that not everything is an easy fix. But our candidates are all experienced people who come into this with open eyes. Just because something might be difficult doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be tried. If you vote for the same old thing, you get the same old outcome. On May 4th vote for Ideal Bradford candidates on your ballot paper – let’s make a real change. www.idealbradford.org

Feeling anxious or depressed? Psychosynthesis Counselling can help. Counselling offers a safe, supportive and confidential space where you can talk freely and without fear of judgement about the difficulties you may be experiencing. As a counsellor I will listen to your story attentively and without judgement in order to help you see your situation more accurately. To help with this I may ask questions and offer reflections that aim to shed light on areas of experience you may be avoiding or are simply unable to see. The clearer the picture we hold of ourselves the better informed and therefore potentially helpful are the decisions we are able to make. Having experienced the benefits of counselling myself, I was inspired

to train to become a professional counsellor. I was drawn to Psychosynthesis because of the vision of development it offers, not seeing us as problems to be fixed but as individuals with potential for growth and fulfilment, who may at certain points in life become stuck and need help to understand what we need to move forward. Psychosynthesis, an approach to therapy that was developed by Roberto Assagioli in Italy in the first part of the Twentieth Century, recognises us all as being in possession of our own wisdom and sees the job of the therapist as helping us to reconnect with that. I have experience helping people with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, sex and relationships, transitions,
life stages and decisions. I work at the Manu Centre in Bradford on Avon and Openings in Bath.

MRC has announced their plan to make tax digital from 2018, which will be the biggest change in a generation to the UK tax system. These changes will impact all individuals, businesses and landlords in either 2018 or 2019 and will see the traditional tax return replaced with quarterly updates of a new digital tax account. These quarterly submissions will need to be filed

LEGAL FEATURE
Inheritance and divorce Sarah Jackson, Head of Family Law at BLB Solicitors in Bradford on Avon, considers whether an inheritance must be shared on divorce
M
any clients contemplating separation, or newly separated, ask me whether they will have to share an inheritance if they get divorced. Similarly, I am often asked by older clients – the baby boomer generation – whether money they intend to leave or gift to their adult children will be safe if that child goes on to divorce their spouse. The answer is that it depends. Monies or assets inherited or gifted before or during your marriage, are not automatically excluded from the matrimonial financial “pot”. In other words, they are not automatically ring-fenced and may have to be shared when a couple divorce. Whether you will have to share your inheritance when you divorce depends on the specific circumstances of your case. It is more likely that you will be able to keep your inheritance intact if:
40
•• you have kept it completely separate from the matrimonial finances; and •• yours and your spouse’s needs (and the needs of any children) can be met by dividing the other assets alone. You are likely to have to share your inheritance if: •• it has been mingled with the matrimonial assets – e.g. used to purchase the family home or to pay off the mortgage on the family home or to fund the family; and/or •• yours and your spouse’s needs (and the needs of any children) cannot be met from the matrimonial assets alone. With regard to a future inheritance, this will not usually be taken into account when dealing with the financial aspects of a divorce. This is because it can be difficult, firstly, to gauge life expectancy and, secondly, to estimate the size of a potential benefit as testators cannot be compelled to

disclose their intentions, which may change over time anyway. Exceptionally however, where there is an expectation of a significant inheritance, the court may adjourn the lump sum element of an application until the inheritance is received. If you want to protect an inheritance, or if the person making the inheritance wants you to protect it, you should consider entering into a marital agreement (a pre-nup or post-nup) with your spouse. This does not guarantee that your inheritance will remain intact on divorce but it increases the chances. If you expect to inherit money or assets in the future, you should also consider appropriate trust planning, which can help to protect legacies in certain circumstances.

o continuing with my observations, I’ve been pleased to receive a variety of submissions from various folk in the area. There does seem to be a similar theme to a lot of thoughts being shared; traffic being one of the major gripes. We are not a letter’s page; however, love to include some viewpoints of local people; “The lack of communication is dire. The various Bradford websites do not seem joined up or give any useful information, and all the Town Council Website tells you is the date of the next jumble sale in St Margaret’s Hall. We knew nothing about the Civil War Re-enactment until a flyer came through our letterbox about a week before to say they were stopping traffic at odd times on Moulton Drive!! I find I glean more information about this town from the Winsley Community Website!" “It’s because we are proud of our town and area, that people want to see things improve, but with this love comes the annoyance that things don’t always get done.
It’s in the too hard pile such as it will take years, they will say NO!” It’s nearly time for the local elections for your town and County Council. You can read about the various parties and independent delegates on page XX. Elections will be taking place on Thursday 4 May 2017. There’s been a lot of momentum with IDEAL Business Bradford who have grouped together to offer an independent opinion for these elections. Change is really important; we need a strong and enthusiastic representative to ensure the growing success of our towns in the future months and years. If nothing else, it’s pushed the other parties to get out there and try for the vote instead of getting-in by default. So use your vote. Vote wisely and have your say in the future of your town. It’s wonderful to see another unique independent shop open Leaf & Bean - a family run, boutique tobacconist, with a wide variety of fine cigars from Cuba, Nicaragua,

Dominican Republic and Holland. They also offer an extensive range of quality craft pipes and tobacco. They also offer specially selected teas and coffees, from the same origins and a range of chocolates, leather goods and unusual gifts. Over to the “Magic Roundabout” Cam, they are nearly there, however realised that the actual roundabout was too big, so it’s been tarmaced in a Frankenstein fashion right up to the edge. Maybe intentionally trying to blend it in with the state of the roads throughout the town? Why do we pay our road tax? The spring clean both physically and mentally have begun, the clocks changing to British Summer Time has filled us with hope of warm sunny days! I look forward to receiving more of your thoughts and news and including these in our next issue... Camilla editor@alocallife.co.uk

The Total Letting Service BOA’s only independent specialist agent 100% dedicated to lettings
H
ayley Brinn has been working with lettings for twenty-five years. In 2012 she and her three daughters brought their combined expertise to Bradford on Avon “because the town didn’t have an independent lettings agent.” From Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge to Chippenham The Total Lettings Service administer properties for portfolio holders, overseas owners and local landlords. Their dedicated team sort out legals, handle monies, source tenants and oversee maintenance and major works through an extensive network of approved contractors. There have been considerable changes in legislation recently and one of the main things being currently debated by Parliament is the requirement to make all agents (regulated or not ) have Client Money Protection Insurance,
unfortunately the majority of Letting Agents do not have this important insurance which protects the Landlord if the agent disappears/goes bankrupt with all the funds including the deposits, not all deposit schemes hold the deposits, a number have insurance backed schemes which means the landlord/agent keep the money in their own bank account – this should be a client premium account, which ensures it is fully protected and identified. CMP (Client Money protection) insurance is part of the mandatory requirement for member firms of Property Mark ( ARLA ) and hence in the unlikely event a member disappears with all the funds, then the Landlord will be fully insured and the deposit is safe. When seeking to appoint a letting agent you should ask some key questions: •• Which Redress Scheme do they belong to ? •• Do they have Client Money Protection Insurance (mandatory for regulated agents)
There have been over 150 separate pieces of legislation in the last 6 years directly relating to letting of residential property.
“Some companies may have ARLA trained staff but this does not make the Company a regulated Agent with all the safeguards an ARLA/ Property Mark Company has.
”
