Your local meat, the natural way
There are many places locally that profess to selling meat, but very few can draw on five generations of livestock farming experience to help and advise you. We take huge pride on the quality of the meat we sell; be it from our own farms or from other local farmers. We always advise our customers on what cut to have for what occasion. If you are looking for great value & super healthy meat for your midweek meal or even something special for friends and family at the weekend then our butchers can help.

welcome
I
t’s that season of fruitfulness, of hips and haws, autumn colours and misty morns… In the run up to Christmas we turn the spotlight on Roger Saul who took handbags to new heights with his Mulberry brand and has masterminded Kilver Court, the coolest discount shopping destination in the country - an ideal day out for Christmas shoppers. We also toast the Corsham Creative Market which offers unique, handmade gifts in the gorgeous Springfield Campus building. We welcome MasterChef Finalist Juanita Hennessy who’s sharing her recipes from the village of Fosbury. We offer hot ideas for sprucing up your interiors from local traders. We also look at interesting ways of handling mental health – ways to find our way out of the impenetrable tunnel of dark days, lonely nights, bereavement and overwhelm. On a lighter note we salute Jazz Carlin’s phenomenal success in Rio; local students who crushed their GCSEs and A levels; and some new local businesses. There are plenty of activities for spooky Halloween and sparkling Bonfire Night. While we’re loving the autumn season of culture in the neighbourhood - be it BoA’s Wine Appreciation Society; the glittering silver exhibit at the Holburne Museum; a sizzling season at the Theatre Royal Bath including Amanda Holden and Tamzin Outhwaite in the pre-West End try out of Stepping Out; plus a smorgasbord of classical, folk and jazz at the Wiltshire Music Centre, where you can also enjoy new offerings of comedy and literary talks. Bradford on Avon suddenly feels like the centre of universe! Angela Clarence

BoA Branding The Town Council’s Branding Guru who suggested the town promote itself as a film location will be gratified to hear that American Film Company, Starz, has been using the Tithe Barn and St Laurence Church to film Philippa Gregory’s The White Princess. The 8-part series is a sequel to the Emmy award winning production of The White Queen and concludes the story of the Wars of the Roses told from a woman’s perspective. Promoting BoA as a film location was part of the Town Council’s £5,000 ‘Beautiful Bradford – the perfect setting’ branding exercise. If only the powers that be would deal with the problems of traffic flow, ease of access and parking, the town might well rival Corsham and Lacock in wooing film location scouts. So whatever happened to the rest of his suggestions? Liaising with Visit Bath to stimulate day trips to BoA by rail and canal; lighting up the bridge at night; and capitalising on the proliferation of wedding experts in the town?
Road Safety at Winsley The long awaited yellow lines in Winsley village are in place allowing free passage for local busses. However, more action needs to be taken on the Winsley bypass. Although it is difficult to get speed limits changed, Parish Councillors are worried about people crossing the bypass to get to the Hartley Farm shop and the Bradford on Avon Rugby Club, both of which opened after the 50mph bypass. Not only that, three cars have crashed into the front garden of the people living opposite the Hartley Farm turning! They are also worried for the elderly crossing to get to the bus stop by Avon Park Care Centre on Winsley Hill.
12
The BoA/Winsley roundabout has also become cause for concern, but Wiltshire Council highways department say that they are stymied from taking action as they require “three incidents within three years.” Yet Parish Councillors attest that there have been three significant collisions on or close to the roundabout this year alone and have asked for a further review of the road’s safety.
Carry on Post Office It was a bit of a carry on for BoA residents without a post office in the town centre this summer, so it’s a relief to see the new Co-op open with two counters. A further counter is scheduled to open in www.alocallife.co.uk
October at the Trowbridge Road Petrol Station in the refurbished Central Convenience Store which is great news. Meanwhile, at the Westwood Village Shop and Post Office, Rita and Ray Parsons (both in their seventies) have been hoping for someone to take over the reins so that they can retire. “It’s been on the market for a year with no takers, but that means that we can take it to the Parish Council to become a community shop now and a letter has gone out to all the villagers.” Although rumour has it that the Post Office has decide to limit the services on offer in the village – a move that’s surely counterproductive (no pun intended) for the Post Office and their customers… Let’s hope the villagers follow Bathford’s lead and take control. Their highly successful enterprise attracts customers even beyond their village.

Could YOU be a Town Councillor?
D
o you sometimes despair that issues affecting the town of Bradford on Avon will ever be resolved? What gets your goat? Traffic flow? Pedestrian Safety? Lack of Parking? Poor Signage? Empty shops? Footfall?
Frome Town Councilors
Would YOU like to do something about it? Have you ever thought that you could be the change? Just six months from now, you and eleven other concerned, enthusiastic candidates could be campaigning for office as Independents for Bradford on Avon. In Frome, eight years ago a group of local residents set about making politics relevant, effective, time efficient, and fun. As Independents for Frome, they have brought a fresher, younger viewpoint, without the ideology of party politics. Meeting just once a month, they have driven the town forward efficiently and effectively – a model which is being increasingly replicated around the country, particularly when burning issues motivate enough residents to want to bring about change. More specifics in our next issue. In the meantime, read more about it in Flatpack Democracy – A Guide to Creating Independent Politics by Peter McFayden available from Ex Libris or online: eco-logicbooks.com/product/flatpack-democracy/
Bridge of Sighs The Town Council is proceeding with consultations to promote safe walking, cycling routes, and mitigate traffic intimidation in the town be they real or perceived. Examination of the issues will include a pedestrian river crossing, tourism signage and safe routes to school.
Remembering the Past The much vaunted Iron Duke received a fantastic welcome back to Bradford on Avon at its inauguration on September 24th. Two former members of staff at Avon Rubber unveiled the iconic machine. Music, poetry readings and films relating to the Iron Duke were performed in the nearby Vaults and Lambs Yard to mark the extraordinary achievement of re-assembling this ground breaking machine and re-siting it on Kingston Road.
Examination of previous projects and the technical issues around a river crossing has already started and will be followed by consultation with Bridge Concern and all interested groups ahead of going public next year. An open consultation this November will give everyone an opportunity to comment, and all ideas will be welcome. The subsequent presentation of a variety of illustrative ideas to comply with planning, environmental and safety constraints, plus ballpark costs, will go on display in the New Year. Do actions speak louder than words? The initiative has already provoked a torrent of objections. Surprise, surprise. In the meantime, why can’t we just have five or six pedestrian bridge designs to choose from, or maybe a look at the Bridge at Batheaston. No51 October/November 2016

Keeping Wiltshire Safe
W
iltshire Air Ambulance have been saving lives for 25 years. They offer a rapid response time within minutes to incidents throughout the county. Available up to 19 hours a day, 365 days a year, thanks to the charitable work of Blood Bikes (see our last issue), they can now administer pre-hospital blood transfusions, saving even more lives. Mark Bryant, aged 40 from Cirencester who was involved in a serious road accident this year and endured 10 days in an induced coma and 2 ½ months in hospital, visited the crew to thank them.
Plans are underway for the aircrew and charity team to be brought together in one location. They have been granted Outline Planning Permission for a site at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, near Melksham.
“I’m really humbled by what Wiltshire Air Ambulance did for me. The blood transfusions that I received saved my life. They are an amazing organization and funded entirely by public donations.”

years’ experience in property they are ideally placed to bring EweMove’s unique selling points to the area. The company is the brainchild of David Laycock and Glenn Ackroyd (a banker and property lawyer), who quit their jobs to become property investors. Whilst amassing significant property portfolios they became disenchanted with the current Estate Agent offering so developed their own model which launched in 2014. While still maintaining a deeply personal approach, their system is firmly rooted in the 21st century. One of the major advantages is the company’s ability to reach 97% of the online market in sharp contrast to other estate agents who are often limited to 50%.
Brian Marsh is the new EweMove franchisee on the block. He and his wife have lived in the area for twenty years. His two children attended St Laurence School and are now on their way to university. Meanwhile, Brian suffered a life threatening illness and took eighteen months off work. Searching for ways to create a better work/life balance he discovered the EweMove franchise. CFB has a thermal imaging camera and is happy to carry out surveys for householders, businesses and community buildings, including schools.
The CFB Thermal Imaging ‘season’ therefore runs from October to February each year. Imaging is conducted inside, and ideally accompanied by the property owner so that anomalies can be highlighted there and then.

Getting Renting Right high priced property market, increasing numbers of people are turning to renting. “InSoawhether you want to rent out a property, move into a rental, or develop a rental portfolio, using a dedicated lettings service definitely gives you an edge. ” source tenants and oversee maintenance and major works through an extensive network of approved contractors.

ayley Brinn has been working with lettings for twenty-five years. In 2012 she and her three daughters brought their combined expertise to Bradford on Avon “because the town didn’t have an independent lettings agent.” From Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge to Chippenham The Total Lettings Service administer properties for portfolio holders, overseas owners and local landlords. Their dedicated team sort out legals, handle monies,
Hayley also has a prodigious track record in developing investment portfolios (particularly as The Total Lettings Service is not an estate agency with vested interests in properties for sale). Their ability to find the right tenant rather than the first tenant for a property is second to none - as a family business they are not target driven. Some of their long term tenants have been with the service for over seven years! The Total Lettings Service is also able to protect both landlords and tenants by keeping current with the complex web of law, regulation and codes of practice governing let residential
properties. Recent legislative changes affecting landlords include HMRC allowances for Wear and Tear; Gas Safety; Rent Repayment orders; Right to Rent checks and Immigration Act - the list goes on and on! As members of the Association of Residential Letting Agents they follow best industry practices, including Client Money Protection Insurance. Yet their high quality service is offered at truly competitive rates. Hayley and her family have managed to combine a belt and braces methodology with a welcoming friendliness that makes The Total Letting Service in Kingston Square a local business of which Bradford on Avon should be proud. 01225 869235 thetotallettingservice.co.uk

Roger Saul - Leading from the Front By Angela Clarence
E
xuding an aura of amused benevolence, the slight figure of Roger Saul belies the intense energy and steely focus of a front runner; as Captain of Athletics and Rugby at Kingswood School and as a leading light in the world of fashion with his iconic Mulberry brand. He was also at the forefront of electric racing car development for Prince Charles, and latterly a trail blazer in the field of organic spelt farming. It all began with Saul’s childhood fascination for toy soldiers and his father’s military uniforms. While still at Kingsdown School, he bought and sold Victorian military greatcoats in the Portobello Road to followers of fashion, including The Rolling Stones. The glamour and excitement were a heady mix and while studying business
20
at Westminster College he approached trendsetting store owner John Michael for a job, placing his foot firmly on the fashion ladder. After buying in handmade belts from hippies, he began to make them himself. On advice from his father, then manager of Clarks Shoe Factory, he began to source exciting skins and buckles creating more and more fashionable accessories. When his highly capable mother joined him with an investment of £500 and his graphic designer sister created a logo, Mulberry was born. As customers bought Mulberry’s beautiful leather briefcases, bags, accessories and later clothes, they were also wowed by the distinctive décor of the shops. The subsequent development of the interior range Mulberry Home only served to reinforce the www.alocallife.co.uk
company’s uniquely individual style - combining heritage with fashion trends - always introducing new colours and ideas. “We changed our persona every season.” However, when Roger sold his stake to increase investment, it heralded an unexpected parting of the way from his multimillion-pound label. Back home in Somerset, the land surrounding Sharpham Park came up for sale and his sister who was suffering from bowel cancer at the time suggested that he grow spelt, an easily digestible grain with many health benefits. So began the family’s holistic journey into the benefits of organic food and complementary therapies. It was also the spark that set him trailblazing once more. Sharpham Park Farm now produces organic spelt, walnuts
UP CLOSE
and vegetables and raises red deer, rare breeds of cattle and sheep. “In 2008 we were on the crest of the wave of the ‘field to fork’ trend and decided to sell our organic produce from Kilver Court, the former lace mill that had been Mulberry’s headquarters at Shepton Mallet. The other factory buildings needed a purpose and we began to consider developing the site as a designer discount destination. Particularly as 50,000 visitors were already coming to the Mulberry outlet shop a hundred yards up the hill.” His friends and colleagues in the fashion world were quick to respond and a long list of top designers jumped in to offer their wares.
“Designer items sold
at outlet prices reflect the vision I have for Kilver Court, and the retailing approach that today's savvy consumer is seeking. I call it smart shopping with sustainability at its heart.
"
Two cafés provide satisfied shoppers with excellent sustenance. His wife’s flair for decoration has since turned the
‘Great House’ into a fabulous emporium for discounted homewares and gifts, as well as the Sharpham Park fare and the finest of Somerset produce. Thanks to Roger’s other passion, gardening, visitors can also stroll through heavenly gardens beside a double-levelled lake all set against the stunning backdrop of a 19th century viaduct; and you can buy plants from their garden nursery. Roger Saul’s incredible creativity and drive has turned Kilver Court into the go to place for buying high end, quality goods at knock down prices. At this time of year, it is also a hugely enjoyable way of sourcing fabulous gifts and gorgeous decorations for Christmas. Not to be missed. kilvercourt.com

arryl Evans and Michelle O’Donnell-Evans are the husband and wife team behind a new baking business opening at Weaver’s Walk, Bradford on Avon. “Both keen bakers and cooks,we were motivated to set up odonnell bakehouse as a home-baking business in 2013 following our ‘moment of inspiration’ when we conceived and mastered our signature bake, the Irish Stout Brownie. We quickly progressed from trading at local farmer’s markets to high-profile food festivals, where we gained a loyal following and critical acclaim from some notable people within the food industry. The rest, as they say, is history….
In addition to our range of handmade luxury brownies and bespoke brownie gift boxes, we will be offering our unique brownie wedding cakes, brownie towers and display platters, perfect for any occasion or event, whether private or corporate. MasterChef Finalist Juanita Hennessy ‘The Fosbury Foodie’
I
am very lucky to live in a beautiful area of the country because it provides me with inspiration and sparks my creativity every day. Deep within the Wiltshire countryside and nestled in the bosom of a valley is a tiny hamlet which goes by the name of Fosbury. What it lacks in size it makes up for in culinary connections. It’s almost like someone stuck a pin in a map of the UK and labelled it mini food utopia. There are producers of gourmet organic flour and food, award winning charcuterie and air-dried
24
meat, a renowned tea expert, and a member of the Guinness family renowned for producing the ‘black stuff’ - Guinness Beer. Tony my next door neighbour is gamekeeper to the Fosbury Estate and he bequeaths little gifts on my doorstop - pigeon, plump breasted and iron rich in flavour; corn-fed partridge straight from the fields; a beady-eyed pheasant, its feathers a myriad of colours; and fresh venison, rich and warming in flavour. I could go on.
from the Fosbury area and the people who surround me. I feel excited playing around with the exceptional local produce, and I also endeavour to try and reflect some of the imagery, colours and vistas from the countryside surrounding my home – green fields in an undulating landscape, forests of bluebells in the spring, and year-round, eye-wateringly beautiful views from the Fosbury Fort.
Whilst I was a contestant on MasterChef this year, I drew a great deal of my inspiration for the dishes I produced
I look forward to sharing some of these recipes and the stories behind them in the upcoming issues of A Local Life. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS For the Chicken
For the Potatoes
1 chicken (jointed into 8-10 pieces)
450g King Edward or Maris Pipers cut into 3cm chunks
2 tbsp dried lavender
2 tbsp olive oil
4 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper
4 tbsp runny honey 4 sprigs thyme 1 lemon (zest and juice) www.alocallife.co.uk
RECIPE
Serves 4-6
Honey & Lavender Chicken with Roast Potatoes Roast chicken is one of my staple go to meals, it is pure comfort food. With this in mind one of my many missions in life is to create new ways to flavour my favourite roast. This honey and lavender chicken recipe is a nod to holidays in France, playing cards and drinking red wine. It’s a wonderful combination which results in beautifully sweet and sticky chicken that keeps you coming back for more.
METHOD
For the Chicken 1. Joint the chicken into 8 pieces, or ask your butcher to joint it for you or buy separate breast, legs and thighs. 2. Crush the lavender and thyme leaves in a pestle and mortar before adding to a bowl large enough to hold the chicken. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. 3. Add chicken and massage the marinade in to the meat, making sure all pieces are evenly coated. Cover the bowl with cling film and marinate for at least 30 mins. Prepare the day before and you can leave overnight in the fridge, but be sure to bring the chicken back to room temperature before cooking. 4. Heat the oven to 180°C (fan) and tumble the marinated chicken on to a baking tray making sure there is space between each joint so that
they brown evenly. I tend to pop the leg and thigh joints in for the first 15 minutes on their own and then add the breasts for the last 30 minutes of cooking so that they don’t dry out. Cook for 45 minutes in total until the skin is beautifully brown and the juices run clear. 5. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter and leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Keep the roasting tin with all the juices for the potatoes below. For the Potatoes 1. Rinse the potatoes and parboil in a saucepan of boiling water for 10 minutes. 2. After ten minutes drain the potatoes and place in a roasting tin with some salt and a generous glug of olive oil. Make sure they are well coated. 3. Pop the potatoes in the oven No51 October/November 2016
at the same time as the chicken as they will also take 45 minutes to cook. 4. Once cooked set aside until you have removed the chicken from its roasting tray onto a serving platter. Add the roasted potatoes to the roasting tray and jumble them around until they are covered in all the lovely sweet and sticky cooking juices. 5. Spoon into a suitable serving bowl and season to taste.
To Serve... Pile up the chicken and potatoes into separate serving bowls. Pour spare juices over the chicken and the potatoes. Serve alongside a fresh green salad, or seasonal green vegetables. If you don’t fancy the potatoes, it goes equally well with crusty bread, which is a great vehicle for mopping up all the juices from the plate. 25

Easy, Quick and Healthy – Riverford Bath What joy to find a Riverford Recipe box on my doorstep, with three inspiring, organic recipes - ingredients organised and measured, plus step by step instructions on how to turn everything into a delicious dinner. This month I found myself cooking a Moroccan inspired fish dish, an Italian chicken dish and an Indian potato and apple curry! Stretching my culinary skills using new ingredients, or familiar ones in new combinations, is not only fun but instructive! Plus, there’s no hunting for unusual ingredients that don’t normally reside in my store cupboard; there’s no waste; and perhaps most importantly, everything’s super fresh, organic, ethically sourced and bursting with goodness. It’s not surprising that the culture of preportioned recipe boxes is a growth market nationwide. Our local Riverford team also organise cookery classes at Demuths in Bath, supper clubs in Bristol, and veg-based activities in schools. Not only that, there is a new Vegetarian Cookery Channel online - designed in collaboration with the makers of Rick Stein programmes, these easy to follow videos capture the pleasure that comes with handling proper veg to create beautiful homemade food that’s packed with flavour. The Magic of Marmalade
T
he stylish interiors company set up by owner Vanessa Sayce, has been casting it’s magic wand over the city’s tired and dated furniture for over four years now. With a flourish of a paintbrush or two, a little help from the gorgeous Annie Sloan Chalkpaint palette, and a whole lot of Marmalade’s special style, the company has fast outgrown its space and has moved to The Loft - the premier life-style shop on Bartlett Street in the centre of the artisan quarter of Bath.
The relocation has also meant that we can give more time to our busy commission service at our bespoke farm studios in Kelston. Projects include painting everything from French-style armoirs to multiple pieces for guesthouses and commercial clients. It’s also where we develop our award-winning courses and workshops for those who wish to learn how to paint their own furniture to professional standards.
“We love The Loft” says Vanessa, “it’s expertly run with wonderful style by Suzanne Temple and her daughter Chloe; and we found an instant synergy between their shop and our style.
We’re busy curating new courses and workshops for Christmas now, as well as our own branded Marmalade items for sale online. It’s a very exciting time for us.”
If you have missed mention of Marmalade House in the press, tune in to the brand new series of Gok Wan’s interiors programme on Channel 4, and catch a little of their very special, magic chalkdust…

Good Mental Health
O
ne of the biggest present day issues highlighted by various politicians and the media is mental health. Yet resources are not being allocated to an already overstretched NHS.
For those individuals motivated to take action, there are many options available. While the use of drugs is necessary and in some cases essential there are alternatives. Most people already know that daily physical exercise is extremely beneficial in maintaining a healthy mind - that even walking for half an hour a day can make a difference. In this issue, we look at some of the different ways mental health issues can be resolved.
Turbo-charged Mindfulness Managing your mind can be challenging but there is a really simple tool which can reduce anxiety, increases clarity of thinking, improves sleep and can even banish panic attacks. Alec and Bindi Stansfield from Trowbridge have been teaching this technique for over twelve years and their clients credit it with soothing them at the dentist, and helping them overcome the debilitating effects of depression. ‘7-11 Breathing’ can be practised by anyone, anywhere, at any time, and it costs nothing. It relies on the simple principle that ‘breathing in’ raises your energy levels, while ‘breathing out’ causes your body and mind to relax. Using your diaphragm (moving your belly rather than your lungs), count up to seven on each inbreath, and up to eleven on each out breath!
42
Whether you want to manage anxiety or improve mental clarity, this easy technique is definitely worth a try. You can even breathe to the rhythm of a specially orchestrated music cd to get you to that oasis of calm. Alexander Technique Alexander Technique is a whole person approach to health, believing in physical and mental unity. We tend to think of emotions, such as fear, anger or depression, as being mental states, but each has a physical side which is equally as powerful. Looking at the whole picture can be key to enabling a more complete understanding of ourselves. The first step in Alexander Technique is to become aware of www.alocallife.co.uk
what we are doing, of the habits we have created. These habits are very personal and individual, and will have a mixture of physical and mental elements. It is the teacher’s role to heighten this awareness, and deepen the students understanding. At first it may feel like these habits are unbreakable, as they feel so natural to us. But by learning more about ourselves physically and mentally, we can gain more control, and thus a greater ease within ourselves. Homeopathy A 25 yr old female presented with severe Vomiting Phobia, for 10 years. Affecting her life in severe ways e.g. cannot travel on public
HEALTH FEATURE transport, go with friends in cars, go to parties etc. Has to organise her own transport everywhere or not go. Makes her very anxious all the time in case someone is going to be sick. Cannot relax. Has developed panic attacks as a result. The being sick used to feel like “she would die”. Due to this description of her experience I prescribed the homeopathic remedy ACONITE in high potency (high dilution). After this she had no thoughts of vomiting but had not tested it out. Still anxious about an upcoming trip to London with friends. I prescribed the homeopathic remedy ARSENICUM in high potency. I received an e-mail last week saying that since the remedy (3 months) she did manage to go in a mini-bus to London with friends with no problem and she and they had been drinking. Then she went abroad and travelled on crowded buses and was ok and recently she was on a train in a carriage where someone had been sick and she didn’t get off (as previously), she just sat several rows away from it. No panic attacks since Quote: “I feel that for now I shouldn’t need another appointment and hope I keep going the way I am as it makes my life much easier on a daily basis” Andrew Ward Dip. IACH. Occupational Therapy & Coaching Janet McClean starts a collaboration with an individual by helping them clarify their personal values and from this will help establish what gives them a sense of meaning. She explores what holds us back from taking action based on our individual ‘life-directional values’ plus identifies any patterns that keep us sad, mad and stuck in a rut instead. Most importantly she focuses and supports skills for making new choices and developing new habits. “We can all get lost from time to time and there’s no need to be self-critical. Ultimately we all want life satisfaction but sometimes, due to a series of events, trauma, or just day to day pressures of life we find ourselves frustrated and dissatisfied. There’s no magic bullet, but coaching can provide opportunities to expand self-knowledge and learn strategies to refocus our intention, direction and actions. I use a coaching approach based on ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy); it’s kind, creative and effective and utilises mindfulness techniques as a basis for long term self-management and development.” Janet McClean DipCOT 07785 288854 janetmcclean.com
Art is not just used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing. Art therapists work with children, young people, adults and the elderly. Clients may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include emotional, behavioural or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, lifelimiting conditions, neurological conditions and physical illnesses. Art therapy is provided in groups or individually, depending on clients’ needs. It is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable. Clients do not need to have any previous experience or expertise in art. Although influenced by psychoanalysis, art therapists have been inspired by theories such as attachment-based psychotherapy and have developed a broad range of client-centred approaches such as psycho-educational, mindfulness and mentalizationbased treatments, compassionfocussed and cognitive analytic therapies, and socially engaged practice. Importantly, art therapy practice has evolved to reflect the cultural and social diversity of the people who engage in it.

Local Schools Excel in Exam Results Monkton Combe School
M
onkton students achieved stunning GCSE results which broke the school’s records for A* grades. 40% of all grades this year were A* and 70% were awarded at A* or A grade. April Collins, whose entrepreneurial flair won her an award for her fledgling tea business earlier in the year, was celebrating with 10 As and A*s. Monkton’s A Level students also excelled. The five candidates with offers for Oxford and Cambridge met their targets, whilst other students won places at Durham, Imperial, Nottingham and UCL.
King Edward’s Bath
P
upils at King Edward’s Bath had stars in their eyes on receiving their GCSE results too. A third of them achieved all A* or A grades, and almost a quarter emerged with 8 A*s or better, and five students gained 11 A*s. Headmaster, Martin Boden, commented “We are delighted the majority returned as new Sixth Formers and have been joined by around 25 new pupils from other schools. To those pupils who have moved on to pastures new, we send our very best wishes for success and happiness in the future.”
Stonar School
St Laurence School
T
T
he GCSE results at Stonar have once again been consistently high with the overall percentage of A-C grades being well above the national average and regularly in excess of 90%. Stonar’s A Level students also won grades resulting in places at Bath, Cardiff, Durham and Southampton Universities to study courses including Biology, Computer Forensics, English Literature, Fashion and Textile Design, Modern Languages, and Politics. Pupils regularly achieve outstanding results which are beyond expectations both academically and personally. While Stonar’s links to sister schools worldwide means that through collaborations, trips and joint ventures with other NACE schools, pupils are gaining an increasingly global education.

here were joyful scenes at at St Laurence School after three quarters of the A Level grades achieved were A*-C and a group of students are on their way to study German and Russian at Exeter, Maths and Sports Science at Swansea, and French and Spanish at Warwick. “The value added in our 6th form is high, something we are very proud of in the light of our policy of giving opportunities to a broad range of post-16 students. Their success, in both academic and vocational subjects, is well deserved. We are proud of those going on to apprenticeships and jobs, as well as the many who are starting a university course.”

The Dangers of a DIY Will … James Trescothick-Martin, Wills and Probate Lawyer at BLB Solicitors in Bradford on Avon advises against writing your own Will
I
n my career as a solicitor I have seen several DIY Wills. Many were fine but several, even with straightforward provisions, ended up creating problems and distress and in one case intestacy. Thankfully in the latter case, the intestacy rules resulted in the surviving widow inheriting but, had she already passed away, there could have been problems.
ruled that the Will contained an absolute gift to the executor, and that the child would therefore receive nothing. It would have been obvious to a solicitor that the construction of this Will would run the risk of a challenge in Court. It would also, as happened, potentially leave a child with nothing from their parent’s estate, which may not have been the intention.
In a recent case (Amiee Shannon Steed (a Child by her litigation friend, Marilyn Joy Winn) v Christopher John Steed (2016)) a DIY Will gave the executor (the deceased’s father) the estate to distribute as he saw fit. The child of the deceased received nothing so challenged the Will. The Court
DIY Will kits from shops, or information and templates available on the internet can result in a valid Will with clear terms. However, I have personally seen Wills which were not validly executed, and which were contradictory or unclear. One was executed following guidance on

the internet but unfortunately the guidance related to a different jurisdiction. Such Wills will almost certainly result in intestacy and potentially costly court action. As they can often seem simple and straightforward, it is understandable that people will consider drafting their own Will. However be warned, they are very easy to get wrong and so it is always best to obtain the advice, drafting skills and specialist knowledge of a lawyer rather than chance the dangers of DIY.

SLICE OF LIFE
slice of LIFE Comings and goings in Bradford on Avon...
T
here was a skirmish on the bridge in the 17th century and an entertaining reenactment this summer. Rather than roundheads and cavaliers, it could be commuters, delivery vans and through traffic fighting to get across this autumn. While the town survived a whole summer of traffic hold-ups at Kingston Farm, it now faces 3-weeks of no through road on Mason’s Lane. We’re grateful that the wall will be made safe, but let’s hope the council has enough signage on the incoming roads, or there’ll be more than a skirmish on that poor bridge. Meanwhile oodles of swaps in the shops. Following the departure of Budgens, the gleaming new Co-op seems to be keeping both staff and customers well satisfied. The refit gives the illusion of more space as well as offering more stock. Phew! Strawberry Blue’s bright new shop on the Tillion’s site had a bumper August bank holiday opening and we wish them continuing and deserved success. Carter and Harding opticians are moving from Mason’s Lane into the Old Post Office and the Coppice Guild are moving to Mason’s Lane - once the plumbers have fixed an underfloor burst water main! The gorgeous Gilou is happily dispensing the best coffee in all
BoA on the site of The Grumpy Badger, and his salmon quiche are sheer heaven. But Gilou, you need to ‘seize le jour’. Any chance you can display your scrumptious food, and turn up the lights so we could see what’s on offer? The Dandylion Pub has received a handsome facelift and if the menu measures up to the décor, Gilou and The Swan will have to look to their laurels. The Swan Cellar Bar has a new look and a smorgasbord of cool bands on Friday and Saturday nights. Could The Swan menu get a revamp too? At Westdale Park, Rebecca HurstRichards has made her B B Kitchen really cosy and she’s offering yummy sandwiches, cakes, teas and coffees. Her sausage sarnies, bacon butties and superfood ‘energy balls’ should keep the burly builders at Kingston Farm happy too. She knows all about energy as she runs the Westdale Better Body Fitness Centre. I’m passionate about the peeps up there and there’s plenty of parking. You can get your pooch spruced at Ace Grooming; your hair fixed by Toni Lilley in a salon with the best view in town; and clothes made or altered and furniture upholstered by Alexandra.
Paul Butler is caring and empathetic in his handling of all the details while Pet Insurance covers all the costs (something vets often forget to mention). Talking of animals, the birth of two cuddly Red Panda cubs at Longleat caused excitement as they are an endangered species. A local newspaper ran great pics and a delightful story about the keepers supplementing their low calorie bamboo diet with fruits, eggs, insects and a special bamboo cake. Adorable! Not so cute was the paper’s coverage of the alleged detection of 150 cannabis plants growing in 2 polytunnels in the BoA area. The boys in blue only found 9 plants, so how come it was dubbed “the biggest discovery of cannabis in a year”. A misrepresentation that only that paper’s reporter, the police press officer, or the 13 police officers present can explain. To finish on a legal high, it’s the BoA Business Awards Gala Dinner October 13! We wait with baited breath to discover who are the town’s 15 best of the best! Camilla camilla@alocallife.co.uk
Charlie’s Parlour is another find. The only private Pet Crematorium in the whole of Wiltshire! No51 October/November 2016
