welcome
T
his month we kick off the Christmas season with a celebration of festive food including a smart Christmas dish from Master Chef finalist, Juanita the Fosbury Foodie; a peak into what Riverford’s Christmas boxes offer; and the Smokehouse talents of Rob at the Long’s Arms in South Wraxall. Our Up Close interview features Wiltshire’s High Sheriff just back from circumnavigating the Arctic Circle giving us a fascinating insight into some of his extra-ordinary exploits. There’s more news on next year’s Town Council Elections with Dom Newton and the first IDEAL Bradford meeting on 7 December see page 12. What’s On offers a host of great events in the run up to Christmas and a cornucopia of entertainment to brighten up your January, including the foot stomping Bradford Roots Festival! Fantastic to be picked by The Guardian as one of the 10 Best Towns for a UK Winter Break. However, do we locals and residents fully appreciate what’s on offer? It would be wonderful if every single person took advantage of the great retail therapy available, of the talented businesses, incredible eateries, and amazing entertainment. Let’s put Bradford on Avon first this Christmas and New Year! Angela Clarence Editor

n 1846 Captain Septium Palairet moved to Woolley Grange with his American heiress wife. He remodelled the house much as we know it today, encouraged his friend Stephen Moulton to set up his rubber company putting money into the venture. He also funded two school buildings to be built adjacent to Christ Church on Mount Pleasant.
In the 1980’s the two buildings were re-designated for use by the community as The Mount Pleasant Centre. The main building known as ‘The Centre’ is available to individuals and societies to dance, rehearse, keep fit, lose weight, hold functions and more. ‘The Club’ welcomes the public to socialise, drink at reasonable rates, play darts, skittles, and enjoy a myriad of talented bands.

An IDEAL Bradford!
E
ncouraged by the call to action in our last issue for the upcoming Town Council, Bradfordian Dom Newton is inspiring a groundswell of interest for an I D E A L Bradford: Independent from party political loyalties and self-interest Different fearless, innovative decisions that can transform entrenched positions Effective change is possible when councillors are both efficient and engaged Accessible democracy only works if people interact and challenge it Liberal supporting an inclusive, vibrant community and its businesses The campaign is encouraging the cream of Bradford to get involved in an independent future. Loosely
based on the Frome Flatpack model, it allows successful, busy people to meet just once a month to make decisions and delegate tasks to others more qualified to carry them out. Dom told us “My wife Liz grew up in Bradford-on-Avon and she convinced me that it was the perfect place to raise our two boys. A thriving community in a historic town with a vibrant arts scene, great sports teams and schools in the heart of the countryside. We were acutely aware of traffic and pedestrian issues. (We advise our guests to come by train to avoid parking problems; and have experienced first-hand the difficulties associated with traversing the town with a buggy!) However, I’d assumed that ‘something would be done’, but other than the traffic getting worse, infrastructure more strained, and businesses closing, it seems that little has changed. Whatever side Bradfordians have
been on in the past, there is a consensus – now is the time for change, and if not now, when? I have seen what a committed group with varied skills and backgrounds can achieve. It will take time and effort, but I firmly believe we can achieve a democratic, strategic, fearless leadership that acts in the interests of the whole community to make positive changes.” Dom is looking for 12 people to stand and as many helpers as possible. If you’ve never thought of it before, normally wouldn’t, but know you could contribute, why not step forward? If good people don’t…you know what happens! With strong support from the community there can be change. BADGERS AND BREXIT
T
he Badger community between Kingsdown and South Wraxall were so happy tunnelling under the road they caused subsidence! Road workers revealed that one of the tunnels was large enough for a person to enter. Badgers are attracted to building setts under roads which offer both warmth and rain cover. Meanwhile a further badger cull has been approved in Wiltshire to stop the spread of TB in cattle. Opinion is as deeply divided on whether it is wiser to cull or inoculate badgers as it is on whether to stay or leave Europe, and emotions run just as high. In both cases the outcome is the same - the taxpayer foots the bill!
he Museum was formed in 1990 and is an Accredited Museum with Charity status, operating to nationally agreed standards laid down by the Arts Council. Sited on the first floor of the Library Building in Bridge Street, it has many exhibits illustrating the history of our town: the Christopher Pharmacy, Roman artefacts, items from old shops and trades, paintings and old photographs of the town. We organise activities and exhibitions such as the Millennium Embroidery, Lidar land surveys, archaeological digs and, most recently, the return of the Iron Duke to our town - now sited as an outdoor exhibit in Kingston Road. There is an active research group, a monthly discussion group and a series of publications on various aspects of the town's history. The Museum is run by a team of friendly, dedicated volunteer trustees and supporters. They ensure the standards of the Museum are upheld, staffed and kept open, projects are undertaken and the long term future of the Museum is assured. We are looking for new volunteers to join us, either as Trustees or as supporters, with the ability, enthusiasm and commitment to maintain and develop the work the Museum does. If you have such skills and experience, and you would like to use them to enhance our local heritage and help us to deliver future projects, please contact me. Bradford on Avon Business Comes Together
S
t Margaret’s Hall has never looked so cool - walls glowing with pastel up-lighting, tables bedecked with flowers, and attendees dressed to the nines. James from the Swan and James from Alex Brown Hardware set the tone as they greeted guests in dinner suits - pouring welcoming flutes of fizz and slipping coats from the 107 guests.
After friends and colleagues greeted and gossiped, a stylish and urbane Andrew Eberlin effortlessly Emceed the proceedings with attendant audio-visuals and amusing sound effects. The coveted awards were presented in-between the three-course dinner (served with ease and aplomb thanks to the Fat Fowl). The winners were surprised and delighted and the guests supportive with resounding applause. James from Systemagic could not have said it better “…having been to many awards ceremonies this was by far the most entertaining, relaxed and efficient. It’s absolutely brilliant to see the BoA business community celebrating together and supporting each other." Congratulations to all those who put so much work into bringing the first BOA Business Awards to bloomin’ marvellous fruition. You know who you are. With 80 nominations, 2,500 people casting 12,250 votes across all categories, no doubt a whole lot more businesses will be encouraged to take part in what should be an annual event. The photograph shows how the dark blue suede wallpaper and painted bookcases work beautifully with the colour and texture of the Bath Stone fire surround. David Hempleman-Adams: Achieving the Impossible By Angela Clarence
D
avid HemplemanAdams could be a character straight out of a Boy’s Own Annual. A courteous, no-nonsense fellow hailed as the greatest allround explorer of our time. The first person in history to conquer the magnetic and geographic North and South Poles and the seven highest summits on each continent - ‘The Explorers Grand Slam’. His hot air balloon exploits are also legendary. Of his solo balloon flight in an open wicker basket across the Atlantic he says “I put on some extra thermals, sat on a fishing stool and ate canned soup which I heated on a Bunsen burner.” He runs a business that invents incredibly useful stuff - a special resin that helps repair potholes; cable joints; and luminous resin strips for lighting foot and cycle paths – as seen on the Batheaston footbridge.
20
As the current High Sheriff of the county he has welcomed the Queen, Prince Charles and Princess Anne to Wiltshire this year; raised a cool £100,000 for the Wiltshire Community Foundation which benefits the disadvantaged; and been behind the scenes with the High Court circuit judges: “It was fascinating to see that as soon as they put on their wigs they were no longer regular blokes, but instruments of the law”. This year also saw the completion of his four-month Polar Ocean expedition to circumnavigate the Arctic circle in one season - only made possible because “In ten years the Arctic has lost more ice than in the past 100,000 years.” It is peopled by 4 million Inuit with wildlife that includes polar bears, Arctic foxes, walruses, seals, whales and that fishy unicorn – the narwhal; the Arctic ice contains around ten percent of the world’s fresh water and plays

a super-important role in keeping our global climate stable. Careful not to politicise his cause, he has concentrated on educating the young on the importance of environmental considerations. “It is one of the most inaccessible places on earth, but the hardships were worth it to help educate people. It is ours to look after, and our Wicked Weather Watch website enabled young students, teachers and parents to get involved by following the yacht’s progress - along with 14-yearold Ben Edward’s blog. Ben was the only crew member to do the whole 4-month trip and experienced the worst weather I’ve ever seen in the Arctic, including a 78knot storm at anchor. He came on as a boy and left as a young man.”

His work with young people has been a recurring theme throughout his life. Perhaps because when his PE teacher encouraged him to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme aged 13, he found his passion for the wild, trekking alone in the Brecon Beacons. He has co-founded The Mitchemp Trust, a youth development charity working with vulnerable 11 to 14 year olds, and been a dedicated trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. His three daughters also completed the Bronze, Silver and Gold D of E Awards “I told them no pocket money if they didn’t!” Touchingly, he told me that his most inspirational adventures have been “Trekking to the poles with my daughters. It was lovely. Not that you have to go to the pole to bond with your children, it’s something you can do walking on the Ridgeway or even down the street.”
Of the dangers he has faced he opined, “There are old climbers, and bold climbers, but no old, bold climbers.” On his beliefs, he admitted that “there have been occasions when I’ve said ‘give me a hand’!” He also related that before climbing Everest in 1993, a local Sherpa asked him to buy a Dzi stone which had brought the man luck on the mountain. “I never go on an adventure without it now,” he said, fingering a small beaded necklace around his neck, “along with a supply of liquorice and marmite…”
“I always like the trips that everyone says are impossible - and then finish them.

But what does the indefatigable 60-year-old who lives in Box do for relaxation? “I go to the Quarryman’s Arms. Or into the countryside. You can feel as remote as if you were in the Himalayas just ½ a mile from the road. I may have been to all four corners of the earth, but I’ll never leave Wiltshire.” Read more in his book There’s No Such Thing as Failure. No52 December 16/January 2017

Food Idols THE BATH SOFT CHEESE COMPANY
H
ugh Padfield’s family has been milking cows for four generations. They started making cheeses in 1993 and elected to use the old fashioned handmade way method, which imbues their cheeses with extraordinary flavour. Deservedly, they have a legion of dedicated customers and several awards for Wyfe of Bath, Bath Soft Cheese, Bath Blue Cheese and Kelston Park.
“We found the recipe in an old grocer’s recipe book,” Hugh Padfield recounts, “It stipulated that the cheese must be made with full cream milk, that salt be sprinkled on the young cheeses with the aid of a feather - but we don’t use the feathers anymore!” If you haven’t yet tried them, you simply must! Visit their farm shop and café at Kelston where you can also book in to watch the cheese being made. Purchase from The Cheese Shop Bradford on Avon or online parkfarm.co.uk

Edward Bramley Kain and Penelope Gage started experimenting in their farmhouse kitchen with strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants from their farm in the 1980’s. Meeting with serious acclaim, and with an abundance of sloes in their hedges, they added Sloe Gin to their repertoire. The launch of 6 O’clock Gin in 2010 was another winner

Preparation & Cooking Time: 2 hrs
Serves 2
Apricot Glazed Poussin With bulgur wheat stuffing, fig and date chutney, fondant potato, the ‘best’ bread sauce, & savoy cabbage with pink peppercorns.
METHOD Poussin 1. Cook the bulgur wheat in a saucepan for 15 minutes in 400ml of chicken stock. 2. Remove from heat. Leave to stand until stock has been absorbed (approx 10 mins). 3. Combine orange zest, herbs, apricots, pistachios all finely chopped and seasoning with bulgur wheat. 4. Stuff the two poussin cavities with bulgur wheat. Brush skin with melted butter and lay 5 rashers of streaky bacon over each. Truss with kitchen string to secure the bacon. 5. Cook for 45 minutes at 170°C (fan). After 35 mins remove and brush all over with apricot jam. Return to oven for 10 minutes to allow the jam to caramelise.

8. You can serve half a bird per person but there is no shame in serving a whole bird. It is a feast after all.
Potatoes Wash, peel and shape into two flat cylinders about 6x4cm. Trim as necessary. Melt the butter, add potatoes, and brown lightly on both sides. Add bay leaves, stock and seasoning and cover with a cartouche - dampened baking parchment which has been cut to fit snugly inside the pan. RECIPE
From Our MasterChef Finalist Juanita Hennessy - The Fosbury Foodie December and January are magical months that offer the perfect excuse to cook and savour exciting, yet comforting food. This is a variation on a main course for Christmas and New Year that is perfect for two, but can easily be scaled up to feed the masses. The bread sauce is particularly divine if rather naughty and is eaten by the spoonful in my household.
METHOD Gravy Lightly brown shallot, garlic, carrot and thyme in a saucepan with some oil. Add flour and cook for 1 minute before adding wine. Simmer over a medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add stock and allspice berries and simmer for 20 minutes until thickened. Strain into a clean pan, season to taste and keep warm.
Fig & Date chutney Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over a medium heat and cook for 30 minutes until sticky and sweet. Remove the cinnamon stick and season. Best served at room temperature.

ello Everyone! Wow, the end of the year is fast approaching and upon reflection so much has happened - some good, some not so good, but I’d like to take the opportunity to say thank you for all your ongoing support. It really has been inspirational and has made me want to provide a wider range of services. To do this a few changes needed to happen, so I am no longer working on my own. At the beginning of November, we held an open event - it was lovely to see so many of you and chat over tea and cake. We are currently networking with local businesses for an even bigger event, so watch this space! Looking forward to 2017 we are aiming to have a small but substantial collection of evening wear to display in reception and if the designs are to your liking, they can be made bespoke. So please pop in to say hello, take a look, and pick up a loyalty card to receive discounts in the future! We hope you all have a happy & restful Christmas, Alexandra Westdale Park, Holt Road, BA15 1TS

conducted home visits for ten years and it feels great to have my own Neet Feet salon!” said Jacqui, who solves every kind of foot issue for clients of all ages, “…from hard skin, to corns, verrucas, and fungal nails. You name it, I’ve treated it.” Her twin Sam worked as a catering assistant at Avon Rubber and at the Bradford on Avon Hospital, but has always wanted a shop. As a home stockist for Cadenza clothes, she considered taking over the Old Post Office but “when this shop came up next door to Jacqi I couldn’t resist… with parking and a generous layout even Mum’s with buggies can browse!” The Shanty stocks a selection of one-off Shabby Chic decorations; Cadenza clothes; accessories; and a selection of pre-loved garments for kids masterminded by her alocallife.co.uk

LEGAL FEATURE
Conscious uncoupling – is it possible to divorce amicably? Is a divorce even necessary? Sarah Jackson, Head of Family Law at BLB Solicitors in Bradford on Avon, considers how to keep conflict out of relationship breakdown
I
am sure you will recognise the term “conscious uncoupling” as used by celebrity couple Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin to describe their separation in 2014. In fact, the term was coined by American psychotherapist and author, Katherine Woodward Thomas, who describes conscious uncoupling as “a proven process for lovingly completing a relationship that will leave you feeling whole and healed and at peace”. To Brits, this might seem a little too Californian and touchyfeely as a concept, but its aim is a noble one – to create a less damaging atmosphere during a break-up, which is particularly important if there are children involved. This is not a new concept in the UK, where family mediation is

becoming popular and most family solicitors belong to Resolution, a national association committed to a non-confrontational approach to separations. It is important to realise that consulting a lawyer is not a hostile move and does not set you on an unalterable course towards a legal battle. Early advice may assist you in resolving matters more swiftly and amicably than if you try to do so without. In some cases there may be good legal reasons for delaying a divorce, in others an early divorce may be best. A solicitor can advise you appropriately and, if you wish to keep your separation amicable, it is essential that you choose a specialist family solicitor who is committed to resolving disputes in a harmonious manner. He or she will also direct you

to other professionals such as pension advisers, therapists and mediators, if appropriate. Although it is not possible for separating couples to see the same lawyer, you can both attend mediation together. However, legal advice will need to be obtained separately as well. Sometimes one spouse decides to instruct a lawyer but the other does not. In such cases, it is all too easy for the unrepresented party to become upset by unfamiliar legal proceedings, and so you should ensure that your lawyer is one who adopts a conciliatory tone aimed at reaching a solution, not inflaming matters. With professional guidance it is possible to divorce and remain friends, but it is crucial to choose your solicitor wisely.

SLICE OF LIFE
slice of LIFE It’s all gone topsy-turvy in Bradford on Avon...
It’s certainly been a topsy-turvy year for the USA, and for BoA and it’s not over yet! Surveys are circulating around town heralding the upcoming Town Council Elections in the spring, but there’s also a bid for party political independence with a raft of new candidates. If that sounds intriguing, pop into St Mags Hall December 7 at 7.30 to check out an energetic, alternative future! There’s a curious brick pancake masquerading as a roundabout up at Kingston Farm. It’s supposed to be one of those undeniably useful devices that minimises accidents and maximises traffic flow, but since my VW Polo barely squeaks round, it’s no wonder that local busses and passing lorries have to mount the aforesaid pancake to get across. Perhaps the presence of the Moulton factory led the architect to believe that he was designing a bikes only roundabout? And why do the road signs point downhill for Wilts Music Centre and direction Woolley for Holt and Trowbridge – topsy- turvy!
the work with no fuss and no traffic interruptions. Good job! There’s hustle and bustle on the river too. BoA already has a private water turbine; and now the Bathhampton Old Mill Hydro project is going ahead. That’s a community project to supply renewable energy, but the locals can also invest and share in the financials too; there are also provisions in place to protect the aquatic life. Good one BANES! However, there are rumours of water wars at Avoncliff where another electricity generating project has caused ‘trouble at mill’. The river wrangles between the parties involved and a government agency have resulted in the opening of the sluice gates, which has apparently left the BoA Rowing Club high and dry. Water, water everywhere, but not enough to scull. (In case you didn’t realise, water is the new gold).
Yet what a great job the artisan brickies did repairing BoA’s ancient bridge after that crazy hit and run episode. Thanks also to the admin team who expedited
Meanwhile, the town centre heaves a collective sigh of relief as roadworks appear to be coming to a close. Nevertheless, shops continue to come and go. Carter and Harding Opticians are safely ensconced in The Old Post Office with that glorious mosaic floor, and while the Christmas Shop next to the gold post box

never materialised, Strawberry Blue has a sparkly Christmas Basement, as well as a shop full of gorgeous things for Xmas shoppers. We’re still eagerly awaiting the O’Donnells to begin unleashing their scrumptious brownies on BoA from Weavers Walk, and we look forward to seeing the Coppice Guild on Market Street in the New Year. We welcome the lovely new DandyLion, and the gorgeous Silver Street studio with its eclectic range of pieces from small-scale designers, artists and makers. But we say goodbye to Yard, the BB Kitchen up at Westdale, and to The Fox at Broughton Gifford. How is that possible? The Fox had the X-Factor - at weekends anyway, but “…no one is safe” (NB advertising helps!) With such a delightful cornucopia of festive activities coming up in and around the area, I wish you all a very happy Holiday Season, and a prosperous and happy New Year be it topsy-turvy or not...
