Launch of Malmesbury Edition of Local Life Free magazines of this type become a resource for residents and for visitors and, for that reason, you will begin to see it around the town in community and business spaces as well.
I
’ve been working in and around Malmesbury for the last six years, though the town has been known to me for much longer – I’ve lived in Wiltshire for almost 20 years now. When André Balkham-Jones approached me with the idea of launching a Local Life for the town and the surrounding areas, I took a long, hard look at what this magazine offers residents, businesses and charities in the area before saying yes. I already knew that it had been successful for Bradford on Avon, so the magazine was offering something of value in that community. I strongly believe it can offer something of equal value in this part of Wiltshire.
With each issue, the aim is to deliver news, lifestyle articles and events relevant to you. This is an area, and county, with beautiful countryside, picturesque places to visit, great food establishments and a vibrant and connected business community. I look forward to sharing what’s on offer.
in current affairs, political and factual entertainment programming. In 2009 I set up my own media consultancy, Mums In Media Ltd, offering effective PR services to businesses, sole traders and individuals. However, I’ve continued to write articles in Wiltshire and I’m also still a television producer/director. At home, I’m married with three children and a step-daughter so life is very busy indeed. I’m proud to be a working mum and proud to be bringing up my family in our beautiful county.
As for me, I’ve been a journalist for more than 25 years working in print and television. Initially, I worked on a weekly newspaper in Somerset and then moved to the Swindon Advertiser where I worked for five years ending up as business editor.
If you have any feature ideas for the magazine, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Please drop me – or my colleagues – an email at malmesbury@alocallife.co.uk.
I made the move into television in the mid 1990s and worked for ITV West as a series producer

welcome Welcome to our first magazine for Malmesbury and the surrounding area! With our local editor Fiona taking the reins as the magazine launches, we are excited to bring you local news and features — it’s all about your community and the wonderful area where you live, and we are always happy to receive news and articles. Our first magazine was lauched in Bradford on Avon and is now celebrating its 5th birthday, going from strength to strength. We hope that the Malmesbury edition can thrive in the same way, with the What’s On section growing into a vibrant roster of everything great that’s happening in the town. In this issue we have an interview with Angela Rippon in which she talks passionately about care and understanding for people with dementia, a feature on the new book by Wiltshire children’s author Ruth Walton, and a hearty recipe from Malmesbury gluten-free guru Diana Murphy. We also feature two independent schools in the area, share some inspiring news from Malmesbury residents, and visit some artisan jewellers in the heart of Bradford on Avon. The expansion of our family of magazines is a great opportunity to build links between our towns, so we will be running features to promote visiting between Wiltshire towns for local tourism. I am often astonished to learn that my friends in Bradford have never ventured to Malmesbury for a visit, and vice versa — the towns share so many similarities, but each have such wonderful unique qualities to share. Wishing you a spine-tingling Hallowe’en, a spectacular Bonfire Night and many delightful autumn days, all

Your event could be here... Here at A Local Life, we are expanding, and we now produce magazines in the Warminster, Bradford on Avon and Malmesbury areas. In order to streamline proceedings and minimise any confusion, we have devised a new system for our What’s On entries, which will potentially give exposure in all of our magazines and on our website. First, go to our website at www.alocallife.co.uk and click on ‘What’s On’ from the tabs on offer. Then select the green ‘Post Your Event’ button on the right hand side and fill in the fields as instructed. This page will also give you the option of attaching an image to publicise your event. Our offer is free to community not-for-profit events, with the opportunity for people running courses and programmes to advertise these in this section. As ever, we cannot guarantee that your listing will appear (the decision is made ultimately by our publisher and depends on space available/how many other entries there are that month etc), but the sooner you can supply your information, the better. CHILDREN’S BOOKS
A Caribbean Fairtrade adventure for local children’s author and illustrator
B
radford on Avon based children’s author Ruth Walton visited the Windward Islands to research her latest book, Juliana’s Bananas, and to see how Fairtrade helps farmers in the region. The trip was hosted by the Windward Islands Farmers Association (WINFA) and Ruth travelled with another local, activist Liz Parker, who is chair of the European Banana Action Network. On the trip, Ruth and Liz visited the islands of St Vincent, Dominica and St Lucia and met with banana farmers, as well as seeing many projects that have been funded by Fairtrade Social Premium money. The Windward Islands economy is dependant on
banana industry. Windward Island bananas received the second and third highest scores in the most recent Ethical Consumer report on the fruit. Fairtrade Social Premium money funds many community resources across the islands, including school equipment, bus shelters, sports facilities and health centres, as well as providing support for farmers to help them recover from natural disasters such as the hurricanes that regularly occur in the region. Ruth’s research trip was funded by a grant from the K. Blundell Trust, which helps young published authors with research costs for books that help raise awareness of social and economic issues. Ruth documented her adventure with photographs, many of which have been used in the brightly coloured collaged illustrations in the finished book.
bananas and tourism. Sadly, following the removal of trade restrictions in 1992, the banana industry has suffered greatly as the small family farms in the area struggle to compete with ‘dollar bananas’ grown on large plantations in Central and South America. In St Vincent, Ruth and Liz were lucky to meet up with Renwick Rose from WINFA (winner of the Guardian International Development Achievement Award 2011), who helped them make the most of the visit. Mr Rose was instrumental in creating links between banana farmers and the Fairtrade Foundation. This union has helped raise the profile and economic viability of the island’s 8

The book is also packed with facts about bananas, how they grow, and even features some tasty recipes. BOOK LAUNCH: Juliana’s Bananas is published by New Internationalist and is being launched in Bradford on Avon at the library on Saturday 25th October, 10am-12.30pm. Ruth will read from the book at 10.30 and signed copies will be available. It is also available from Ex Libris in the Shambles, Christine’s in Silver Street or online at www.newint.org

COMMUNITY
Malmesbury.com revamped Malmesbury may well be the oldest borough in England, but it’s not just rich in history; it’s got a thriving community today, rich in community groups busily organising events throughout the year, and the town centre is dotted with really useful independent shops selling the things that you just can’t find anywhere. Local resident Justin Jeffrey has lived in and around Malmesbury for over twenty years and, back in 2009, he decided to put his website development skills to good community use, bringing all of this information together in one ‘easy-to-use’ town website. Realising that he would probably never see the light of day if he were to try to keep this information updated himself, he built a system that allows the community to update their own information. And that was it: Malmesbury.com was born. Five years on and the website’s just undergone a major revamp. “Functionality has been streamlined, the design updated, and it’s still completely free for everyone to use,” explained Justin. “We’ve got the most amazing community here in Malmesbury and it’s great to feel we’re doing our bit.” Justin and his wife Ruth also run Mindvision, a design agency in Malmesbury’s High Street, so they’re right in the thick of it. If you want to know what’s going on in Malmesbury, check out the all new Malmesbury.com.

EDUCATION had been founded in 1874 by the nuns of the St. Denys Retreat. The Senior School’s majestic buildings lie in grounds which face open country. The Preparatory School is on a neighbouring site and has long-established links with the town, enjoying strong support.
Man with a Mission –
Mark Mortimer, Headmaster, Warminster School
In January 2014 Mark Mortimer assumed the role of Headmaster at Warminster School, the locally situated, independent boarding and day school. A former army officer and Atlantic rower with an MBA in business management, he brings to Warminster a combination of inspirational teaching experience, leadership and endurance. The school comprises the Prep School for pupils aged 3 to 11 and the Senior School for students aged 11 to 18. Founded in 1707, it was originally the Lord Weymouth Grammar School, a free school set up by Viscount Weymouth, Thomas Thynne, to educate the workers on the Longleat Estate. In 1973 the school merged with St. Monica’s girls’ school, which
According to Mark Mortimer, “Good exam results offer opportunity, but education is more than results, and an all-round, values-based approach is vital.” He asks parents, “What sort of person do you want your child to be when they leave here for the final time?” “Financially independent and living somewhere else?” I suggest. He laughs and explains that, in his eyes, emotional intelligence, optimism and resilience are important life skills and this is what he aims to encourage in his pupils. He is a firm believer that a school has a responsibility, particularly in this day and age, to prepare pupils for life beyond university. In the short term he is looking to build relationships with the community and local schools and also looking at collaborative teaching, but it is only the beginning of his plans for the school. With a new inspiring Headmaster, there are exciting times ahead for Warminster School, staff and pupils alike.

How to enjoy moving house Moving to a new home should be an adventure to savour. But sometimes it can seem anything but enjoyable and some tasks can seem almost too overwhelming to contemplate. Wherever you move, at whatever stage in your life, you’re creating a new home. And, as the years go by, you may just need a little more support than when you last moved. Finding a new home can be daunting enough, but then come the endless lists – what will fit, what needs to be sold, recycled or given away, choosing the right removal company, and sorting out the cat’s cradle of utility companies. And then the move itself . . . Tailormade Relocation is taking the stress out of moving home for a growing number of local people – with a complete package of services you can choose from. “Whatever the size of project, the principles are the same: advance preparation and practical, cheerful support from start to finish,” comments founder Sara Milward-Oliver. “We can take care of everything. And I mean everything. We can find a property, help with renovations. We can manage every aspect of the move and then help to unpack – ensuring beds are made and leaving you comfortably settled.” Tailormade Relocation . . . friendly and practical help from start to finish. “It’s great to know there’s someone in the background giving you total support.”
Katie Went cycles to Paris in support of Diabetes Charity Katie Went, a partner at the Swindon branch of law firm Bower & Bailey, embarked on a four-day cycle ride to Paris in support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Joining Katie from the Swindon business community were 12 friends on bikes and two people in support vans. The group began its tour from Greenwich on Thursday 11th of September. They then cycled to Dover and took the ferry to Calais. Over the next three days, the riders followed a route through Arras and Compiègne to Paris. When the partner of one of her friends was diagnosed with diabetes, it was suggested to ride to Paris to raise money. With £6,000 raised online, they are hoping to surpass £10,000 with offline donations. After suffering for years with a long-term knee injury, Katie reluctantly took up cycling to stay fit. With the support of her partner, also a keen cyclist, she soon started enjoying the sport. Commenting on the challenge, Katie said: “It was an absolutely amazing experience and worth all the hard slog. I admit to being choked up when we saw the Eiffel Tower, but my highlight was cycling round the Arc de Triomphe hi-fiving my friend Nat with Mark filming and car chaos all around us! Thoroughly recommend it to all!” For further information, or to donate, go to www.jdrf.org.uk No1 October 2014

The Gluten Free Guru Meet the founder of The Gluten Free Centre
Courgette risotto (3-4 servings) Ingredients: 3 small shallots 1 (large) clove of garlic 1 stick of celery 1 tbsp butter or coconut oil 300g Arborio rice (risotto rice) 4 small courgettes (use a mixture of yellow ones and green ones if you can) 800 - 900ml gluten-free chicken or vegetable stock Salt, pepper Fresh parsley Parmesan Optional: 1 large chicken breast
16
Method: Melt the butter in a pan. Finely chop the shallots, garlic and celery and soften them in the butter on low heat for about five minutes. Grate one of the courgettes with a cheese grater and add it to the pan. Give it a stir and add the rinsed Arborio rice. Stir again thoroughly to combine the ingredients well. Start adding the stock one ladle at a time. When the rice starts to soften and change colour add the remaining courgettes, chopped into bite size chunks. Season with a little salt and pepper. If your stock is salty you may not need any salt at all.
Continue adding the stock until the rice is cooked and soft. Stir continuously. Check the seasoning and adjust if needed. Add a small handful of fresh chopped parsley towards the end and let it rest for five minutes before serving. If you prefer the meaty option: dice a chicken breast to bite size pieces and quickly fry it in a separate pan in a little oil. You don’t need to add any seasoning. When ready, stir into the rice. Serve the dish with a sprinkle of Parmesan.

interesting things to eat, at a time when gluten-free products were few and far between. So, she created many herself. She’s not alone – the gluten-free movement is growing worldwide alongside dairy-free and sugar-free.
She lives in the town with her husband Dave and her toddler son. She has spent many years dealing with severe digestive issues, has coeliac disease and is lactose intolerant.
She’s now started The Gluten Free Centre to help people embrace and love their gluten-free life. The aim is to help people overcome difficulties and to build an online resource and support network where people with coeliac disease can share ideas, recipes and news or find products and places to eat.
With these dietary needs, Diana spent years trying to find good,
Diana says: “I felt so alone with my problems when I became
gluten-free five years ago. I had no idea what coeliac disease was, all I knew was that gluten made me violently ill. I wanted to create an online home and a community for all coeliac sufferers in the UK, so they know they are not alone, and together we can find a way to enjoy our lives to the full, be safe and gluten-free.” For details visit www. theglutenfreecentre.co.uk

Autumnal Rejuvenation Neem and Pumpkin Facial at Bowood Spa by Clare Macnaughton
As summer drew to a close, and with my skin showing the signs of prolonged sun exposure, I seized the opportunity to experience the special autumn facial offered by Bowood Spa. The promise was that the Sundari healing facial and scalp massage would rejuvenate my skin and the pumpkin would freshen it, leaving a healthy glow.
essences distilled from nature, blending modern science for immediate results with botanicals known through ancient wisdom. The products to be applied were extensive and, I was to discover later, smelled heavenly.
My beautician guided me to my aubergine-coloured, warmly lit treatment room, with ambient music playing in the background, Bowood Spa is a fantastic facility and began my treatment with set amid the grounds of the a gentle foot exfoliation and Bowood Hotel and golf course massage. The facial itself involved near Calne. The spacious spa has an infinity pool, gym, steam room, a bindi touch, three special jacuzzi, sauna and rainfall shower, inhalations of Vata facial oil, with well equipped clean changing multiple cleansings and tonic tonings, hot towels, tapping, rooms. Each locker contains slippers, a robe, a large towel and dabbing, exfoliation, massage, mask removal, tonic water a hand towel. spray, eye care and then a final On arrival I was given a moisturise. questionnaire to establish my skin type, so that my Dosha lunch could be tailored accordingly. I was a Vata, which meant that my skin was dry, and lunch was to be mackerel and ratatouille, nut salad, orange segments and mini pitta bread, all chosen to nourish my skin.
The highlight of the facial for me was the Apricot and Shea Hydra Soothing Mask, which smelt delicious, like exquisite cheesecake, but felt cool, light and gentle on my skin. At the end of the treatment I felt relaxed, renewed and glowing. My skin, which had sustained significant sun damage this summer, looked invigorated and refreshed. The limited edition seasonal Neem and Pumpkin facial is available at the Bowood Spa from the 1st September to the 30th November for £90 (rrp £155). Alternatively, you can relax in the spa for a day with a light lunch from only £40 per person. Ref: ALL01B www.bowood.org/spa 01249 823883

The art of movement Catherine Truscott is a dancer by training, now teaching Pilates in Bradford-on-Avon and Colerne. Catherine loves movement, but has always valued the stillness of mind that comes from meditation, and two years ago found herself inventing her own distinct method, combining meditation with movement. Catherine then needed something to call her new meditation technique. ‘Inasphere’ was born, “As we use geometry to shape the meditation, and subtle energy to shape the movement.” “For me, Inasphere is the next stage on from the physical alignment that Pilates brings. Inasphere is alignment for the body’s energy system, bringing a sense of clearing, balancing then enhancing our inner energy, and calming the mind too.” “The best description is: it’s meditation for fidgets!” No1 October 2014

UP CLOSE many people. She says this was clear at the first meeting of the Dementia Friendly Communities Champion Group, set up to drive work on the Prime Minister’s challenge.
Dementia and Dignity by Clare Macnaughton
A Local Life met British icon, broadcaster and journalist Angela Rippon at the opening of the Port Haven Care Homes, Wiltshire Heights Care Home in Bradford on Avon. She has championed the cause of people with dementia in her role as an Alzheimer’s Society ambassador. Her objective is considerable: to change the attitudes of a nation. For Angela Rippon OBE, however, making the UK a place where people with dementia can feel comfortable and safe is of paramount importance. Angela, whose mother Edna died with dementia in 2009, is committed to making sure the condition is better understood and that people who have dementia are accepted by their communities and not stigmatised. 22
She says, “What’s fascinating about the whole process of creating dementia-friendly communities is that it sounds easy but it is a huge job. We’re trying to change the mindset of a generation to accept dementia and not be afraid of it, to take away the stigma associated with it. As a result of that we want people to be given information about dementia and how to deal with people with dementia and their carers so that we can maintain their dignity and independence.”
“At our very first group meeting it was fascinating to see representatives from banking, insurance, supermarkets, department stores, social groups, local councils, the fire brigades, the police, city councils — all of these people coming together. They were saying, yes, not only are we already thinking along these lines but we are pushing at an open door because it’s evident that the staff are already full of people who have an association with dementia in some way.”
Showing the way Angela hopes that by 2015 dementia-friendly communities such as Wiltshire Heights in Bradford on Avon will exist across the country, and that the UK can be an example for others. “If we can show the way here in Britain and ensure that people with dementia and their carers can maintain their independence and their dignity — because the rest of society understands the problems that they have and how to deal with them — then that is going to be the most amazing thing.”
Permeating society The impact of dementia is increasing. For Angela, the changes in attitude need to reach all areas of society in order to be successful, but this is feasible because dementia has affected so

Stairs driving you around the bend?

n average we go up and down stairs over 200,000 times in our lifetime. For most of us, these things only take a minute. But many people find it incredibly difficult. That’s why stairlifts were invented: to make life easier. The earliest record of a stairlift dates back to the 1500s, when King Henry IIIV invented his very own “Stairthrone”. Stairlifts were widely introduced in the UK in the 1970s and since then have made climbing the stairs simpler and safer for millions of people. Stairlift design has changed over the years to be more sleek and elegant, in a choice of colours to blend into the home. They fit to the stairs and not the wall so you won’t need to redecorate, and they can be on your stairs in around as little as 3 hours. 1st Choice Stairlifts, based in Wiltshire, are experts when it comes to having a Stairlift fitted. The company offers many different models from most
manufacturers to make sure that you get the best stairlift for your stairs and your needs. Stairlifts can fit on any staircase, whether indoors or outdoors, a straight flight or curved stairs, even spiral stairs too. Rental stairlifts are also an option for a short term solution, or even to help a relative who is staying over the festive period! 1st Choice can also can repair and service your stairlift, irrespective of who fitted it originally, to make sure it is working and in tip-top condition. Arguing siblings I have two sons, aged 10 and 6, who spend every waking minute arguing and bickering with each other. It’s unbearable and is ruining our weekends and holidays. What do you advise? I’m desperate! A Brown, Malmesbury
welcoming, I’d much rather she find someone else. Am I being unreasonable? S Milton, Yatton Keynell
Answer Poor you; I feel your pain. Try and ignore the arguing as much as you can, and help teach your children to resolve their own arguments (obviously you’ll have to intervene if things get too out of control). Give clear boundaries, rewards for good behaviour and remember that this is a phase that will pass in time. Good luck!
DIY mad neighbours I live in a lovely house in a super road and, for the most part, get on very well with my neighbours. The only problem is that the man of the house is DIY mad and seems to enjoy using his power tools late at night when I’m trying to get to sleep. How can I broach this without having a major fall-out?
Answer In a word, yes, you are being unreasonable! As long as this boy is treating your daughter well, then you have to put your personal feelings aside and be supportive. One of the most difficult parts of parenting is letting your children grow up and become independent (which includes their choice of partner). I know this is easier said than done, but your daughter will thank you for it in the long run.
Couple time
E Taylor, Calne
I have 3 children under the age of five, and while I love them dearly, I really miss spending one-on-one time with my husband. I feel we have no quality time together, and finding the energy to go out (not to mention a babysitter I trust) seems impossible. What do you advise?
Answer
P Denton, Castle Combe
We all need good neighbours, so I think if at all possible, you should try to deal with it lightheartedly. Maybe when you next see him you could comment that he must be exhausted from working so late into the night. Failing that, I think you should come right out and say that you’d rather he didn’t do his drilling after 9pm. He probably doesn’t realise, and will be very apologetic.
Answer
I don’t like him! My daughter, 17, has just introduced me to her first serious boyfriend. She’s obviously very keen on him, while I’m really not! She wants to invite him around to our house, and while I suppose I should be
Do you have a friend who could babysit for you? Or a family member who could come and stay for a few nights? Having such young children does take over your life, but arranging a regular ‘date night’, where you can have an uninterrupted conversation will make all the difference. Perhaps you could try to do this once a month; perhaps taking it in turns to organise? Good luck. Erica Morgan Email Erica for some advice and solutions... erica@alocallife.co.uk

BOOK REVIEW
I Predict a Riot
Catherine’s first novel, We Can be Heroes, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and long/ shortlisted for various other awards, and I Predict a Riot is surely destined to garner similar critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of the stories behind the riots. And like We Can be Heroes, which is being adapted for the big screen, it seems ripe for adaptation. Written almost as a screenplay, its fastpaced, action-packed plot will grip you from start to finish and leave you reeling at the end.
by Catherine Bruton (Egmont, 2014) I Predict a Riot is the third crossover novel by Bradford on Avon writer Catherine Bruton. In publishing speak, ‘crossover’ means it’s aimed at readers of all ages. Or, as the Financial Times put it, “Bruton’s is the kind of writing that appeals to both kids and adults, in the same way as Mark Haddon or Michael Morpurgo.”
Opening with the lines, “One of my friends is dead and the other might as well be. All because of me,” it will inevitably draw comparisons with Steven Kelman’s award-winning Pigeon English or Meg Rosoff’s How I live Now, although Bruton says she was most inspired by S E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, which she first read as a teen.
I Predict a Riot was inspired by the UK riots of 2011. Set in London, where Bruton used to work in youth groups with teenage gang members, it tells the story of three kids from very different backgrounds who set out to make a movie and end up involved in the riots in a summer that will change their lives forever.
Bruton teaches part time at King Edward’s School in Bath and acknowledges the input of her pupils in the dedication: “You all make me think… make me want to write better.” The Guardian has described Bruton as, “One of the finest teen writers of recent years,” and this hard-hitting, hilarious, heartbreaking new title is surely destined to cement her reputation and become a modern classic. “Bruton’s is the kind of writing that appeals to both kids and adults, in the same way as Mark Haddon or Michael Morpurgo.”
Maggie, the politician’s daughter, is hiding behind the lens of her video camera. Tokes is the son of a notorious gang member, running from trouble and looking for a new start. And Little Pea is the kid everyone has given up on — abused by his mum, neglected by society and pushed around by the ruthless Starfish Gang who rule the streets, he is lawless, untrustworthy, funny, witty, reckless, tragic and ultimately heroic. An Artful Dodger for our times, I guarantee that Little Pea will make you laugh, make you cry, make you angry … break your heart.
