Moulton in China with Prime Minister
Welcome to our February/March issue of A Local Life. After what seems like weeks of depressing rain, let’s hope we finally get some respite in the shape of some cheery sunshine. As always, we try to bring you an exciting issue jam-packed with news, events and articles. Following the flooding on Christmas Eve, it’s wonderful to see that Bradford is open for business as usual, with most businesses up and running again (see our article on page 30).

CULTURE
Icy, Spine-tingling production of “THE SNOW QUEEN”
Freshford Village Hall The village hall at Freshford is set discreetly in beautiful Green Belt Somerset countryside within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site of the hall was gifted immediately after the First World War “in memory of those soldiers who went forth from the parish and gave their lives for their country”. The surrounding land, now the car park and “Queen Elizabeth Playing Field”, was gifted in 1950; the original wooden club-hut being replaced by the present modern building in 1965. The hall has recently hosted a wide range of social, leisure and business activities, including opera, pantomime, dances, parties, wedding receptions, brownie camps, concerts and archery, as well as community and private meetings. For healthy exercise and relaxation, Uni-hoc, badminton, yoga, dance, zumba and martial arts clubs have all been regular users. The main hall is 15m x 10m and has a full size badminton court. It houses a proscenium stage, which provides seating for up to 150. It has a premises licence for dance, music and plays with a maximum of 160 on the premises, and is licensed for live and recorded music with PPL and PRS.
The Snow Queen is a powerful story of friendship and the triumph of good over evil. Is the love of Gerda powerful enough to rescue her brother from the clutches of the wicked Snow Queen who has captured him and turned his heart to ice. With a large, youthful and wildly enthusiastic cast the production promises an evening of joyous music and high drama. Director Phil Courage: ‘The cast have taken to the task with relish and with a so many highly talented young players I would defy anyone not to take delight from this show.’ 19th-22nd February and tickets available: 01225 860100 www.wiltshiremusic.org.uk

EDUCATION The Upper Nursery class provides a smooth transition between Nursery and Reception. Children join Upper Nursery on a rolling basis, around the time that they turn 4 years old, and have their own classroom within the Prep School. They wear a school uniform and go to the main dining room for snacks and meals. Mixing with the Reception class for some playtime and structured activities helps the move to Pre-prep when the time comes.
Discover Stonar Nursery “My children are happy, confident and they love going to nursery.” Current Nursery parent Your son or daughter can join Stonar Nursery immediately after their second birthday and enquiries are welcome at any time of the year. They can continue through the Nursery until the September after their fourth birthday, at which point they move into the Reception class.
Based in a secure location within the beautiful Stonar site, Nursery children have access to their outdoor playground, gardens and Forest School. This means that they enjoy plenty of time outdoors – playing, learning to grow plants or perhaps looking after newly-hatched chicks. Additional activities include swimming, sports, PE, yoga, ballet, modern dance, cookery, forest school, art, and music. There are flexible sessions with before- and after-school care from 8am-6pm, which provide a range of options for working parents. You are warmly invited to visit the Nursery and meet key staff. Alternatively join one of our Open Mornings for guided tours and to meet staff. Mrs K. Ibbott, Registrar 01225 701741 k.ibbott@stonarschool.com www.stonarschool.com
In the Nursery, children enjoy a happy first step into the world of play and learning, where we build warm and trusting relationships with each child. Caring staff gently encourage the children to grow emotionally, socially and intellectually. Two year olds join the Ducklings class, situated in the spacious, purposebuilt Nursery. Each child’s unique qualities are nurtured as they begin to enjoy a sense of belonging within a group. Children join Lower Nursery class from the term after they turn 3 years old. Still situated in the Nursery building, Lower Nursery class children continue to learn and develop through play as well as structured activities planned in response to their needs and interests. 14

CARE FEATURE
A New Year. A Fresh Start.
Let Porthaven help you make 2014 your best year for years! This is the time of year when concern about older loved ones is most acute. The weather is inclement, days are short and it can be difficult or even dangerous to get around. People sometimes imagine the alternatives to one’s own home aren’t pleasant - but at Porthaven Care Homes nothing could be further from the truth. We offer a refreshingly new alternative to a traditional nursing home. Our new purpose-built homes are beautifully appointed with private ensuite bedrooms, inviting dining areas and stylish lounges. Our menu is excellent and varied; and our approach to activities, hobbies and entertainment is award-winning. Most importantly our care and nursing is, we believe, second to none. This is perhaps why many describe Porthaven care homes as the best in the UK. Make that first step towards creating a positive 2014 for yourself or someone you care about. Call us today and find out more about our excellent approach to care. We think you’ll like it.

PUBLISHING BRADFORD ON AVON
and Breweries by Jack Mock in 2012 and, last year, Brylcreem and Broken Biscuits by Stephanie Laslett, which takes a detailed look at the town’s shops half a century and more ago. These past couple of years I have been preparing for print a series of booklets on aspects of the town’s history on behalf of the Museum, and I am currently working on an eighth title. In fact, over the years I have been involved in many more local publishing projects, not least two booklets about the very exciting excavation of a Roman Villa beneath St Lawrence playing fields, now sadly out of print. Given all this activity I think it’s fair to conclude that Bradford on Avon must be one of the most published about small towns in England – and it’s not over yet! All the books mentioned, except those on the Roman Villa, are available from Ex Libris Bookshop in The Shambles.
I had already published a couple of books when my wife and I moved to Bradford from South Devon in 1980 to take over the fledgling Ex Libris Bookshop. I soon began rambling in the beautiful and varied countryside close to the town and devised 20 circular walks which I first published in 1982 under the title Where Wiltshire Meets Somerset. I published a fifth revised edition in 2013 which means the book has been continually in print for well over 30 years. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s I published many books on Wiltshire, Somerset and the West Country, though our list has diminished somewhat since our heyday. One of my greatest pleasures has been to publish several titles on Bradford on Avon. The first was the late Harold Fassnidge’s Bradford on Avon: Past and Present which has gone through three editions, the last revised by myself after Harold’s demise. In 1997 we published our pièce de resistance, Bradford Voices, by local historian Margaret Dobson, then a revised and extended edition in 2011. In 1998 we brought out Bradford on Avon Schools by former headteacher Keith Berry. After a five year absence, on returning to Bradford in 2010 we published Bradford on Avon’s Pubs 22

AFTER THE FLOODS
After the Floods... Photo: © Richard Clarke 2013
On a bright January afternoon in the bustling heart of Bradford on Avon, it is clear that the town is open for business — its vibrant independent cafés and shops doing brisk trade in a lively, genteel atmosphere. The only signs of recent disruption are a few stray sandbags, and buildings undergoing renovation.
many years, with the water rising at a startling rate. The speed of the inundation overwhelmed the emergency procedures that businesses had in place, forcing staff to improvise as they worked to save stock and equipment. “I was literally swimming in the cellar bar, to get across the room more quickly,” remembers Dominic, bartender at The Swan Hotel. “Saving the PA system, we were carrying speakers above our heads, with the water up to here,” he says, tilting his head back and indicating his chin.
where the water was three feet deep by lunchtime. “It comes in through the floor when the water table rises,” Alison explains, “so putting a barrier on the door doesn't make much difference.” In previous floods, the water level has not quite reached The Fat Fowl, but this time they were not so lucky. “Within twenty minutes we were totally under water,” says owner Arlene Caddow. “The waves caused by vehicles going through three feet of water at speed has caused a huge amount of damage on Mason’s Lane.”
But on the 24th December the “We got everything upstairs except Even those on higher ground suflow-lying areas of Bradford were the carpet,” says Alison Hayward, fered — with what should have flooded to a depth not seen for owner of the Bridge Tea Rooms, been one of the busiest days of the year wrecked by the lack of access to the town. The Tithe Barn Workshops were also flooded. “We saved what we could,” says Mike Pugh of Seren Arts, “The speed of it was phenomenal. We had a very busy Christmas, but not in the way that we'd envisaged.” Flooded Tithe Barn Workshops Photo: Serena Pugh - SerenArts Gallery.

AFTER THE FLOODS At Paper Scissors Stone, Mary Petrovska is upbeat, despite the stress of the flood. “Everyone down here was really brilliant,” she says. “Lovely community spirit. That makes you think you've got a nice little spot.” Despite deep water remaining in several areas of The Swan, owner James Sullivan–Tailyour was determined not to disappoint the fifty people who had reservations for Christmas lunch. “The team did a fantastic job, in fairly serious adversity, to make sure everybody had a great Christmas.” He says, chuckling as he remembers changing in to swimming trunks to wade in to the cellar and retrieve undamaged stock from high shelves. At The Three Gables the water was five feet deep in the cellar, decimating ingredient stocks. “We lost a hell of a lot of food,” says owner Vito Scaduto. But he refused to cancel their New Year's Eve meal and party. “We had to start completely from scratch,” he reflects, “but we still did a five course dinner.” The night was a success. “It was great, brilliant,” Vito smiles. “We've had lots of support from friends, customers, and other businesses in the town,” he says, “and we're getting back to normal now.”
Arlene expects The Fat Fowl to be closed for three months and estimates the cost to her business at around £150,000. Like everyone else affected, she is doing everything she can to make her premises more flood resistant. “We're looking at every aspect,” says James at The Swan, “because I don't think that it's the last time it's going to happen. But I don't think it can solely be the responsibility of the individual business owners.” Mayor John Potter recognises the need for local government to help make the town more resilient to floods. Options being explored include barriers on the riverbank and one-way valves in drains. “It's complicated, and it takes time,” he says, “but we're moving it on.” Environment agency officers will visit Bradford once crisis-level flood waters on the Somerset levels have receded. “It's not easy, but we know how to go about it now, we're going to get everyone on board and see what we can do. It's looking very positive.”
Back at The Swan, James has to get back to supervising renovations, organising upcoming music events in the bar and welcoming guests to the hotel. “It has been tough,” he says. “There's still a few places closed, but Bradford on Avon is very much up and running. I just hope that people will keep coming and supporting the businesses that are open now, and those that will open again soon. I'm sure they will, because it's a great town.”
“The speed of it was phenomenal. We had a very busy Christmas, but not in the way that we’d envisaged.”
It has been a distressing time for Becky Tyler, owner of The Teapot. “The support from people in the town has been so nice,” she says. “All the cards and emails have really given me the motivation to get it all sorted.”

Food&drink Grazing to Save the Planet, and Us... Graham Harvey, script writer for The Archers and awardwinning author, will be speaking on ‘Grazing to Save the Planet (and Us)’ at a Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon event on 10th February. Graham will be talking about the need to produce and source food in a way which reduces the advance of climate change, modern health problems and the loss of biodiversity. His books contend that these issues are inter-related, there are solutions and that the need is urgent. The evening will include time for questions (Graham may even accept a question or two on The Archers!), a film and stands. Sue Thomson, the Event Manager for A Local Larder; Bradford on Avon and Beyond, will have a stand there so any local
producers, or buyers for food and drink outlets, attending can make a contact during the interval. The Mayor will be opening the evening, which will also include the official launch of Bradford on Avon Local Food Map and Website. Take a look: www.boafood.co.uk is already live. The map and online directory now list over 90 local food and drink producers and outlets in the retail and hospitality sector, including farm-shops, pubs, restaurants and cafés within 10 miles of Bradford on Avon. Here you will also find relevant News and Events. We welcome your contributions: submit through the contact email address on the website. We hope it will become a really vibrant local resource.

Food&drink Truly traceable produce for local food and drink outlets A LOCAL LARDER, Bradford on Avon & Beyond is a trade show for food and drink outlets wishing to offer truly traceable produce. Called A Local Larder to represent the comprehensive range of products on show from the producers themselves, and, Bradford on Avon & Beyond to convey the catchment for exhibitors and delegates
currently or as a future business development, with business planning and selling techniques as topics for two free twenty minute workshop before the event opens.
What happens to our food, where it comes from and a desire to support local businesses increasingly informs shopping choices, and being able to pinpoint the farm, field or kitchen where it was produced is a great marketing message for outlets.
Ros Edwards of Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon met Sue Thomson, with links to farmers’ markets, at a similar event in Seend last September. Both agreed it was a great concept, that a similar event would work well in Bradford on Avon and underpin the Local Food Map by connecting producers and outlets within the catchment of 35 miles from Bradford on Avon.
Exhibitors will be encouraged to consider their capacity to supply,

Mushroom & Black Truffle Risotto Serves 2 Always cook the mushrooms off before you start the risotto and try to get the best mushrooms you can find, ideally fresh chanterelle plus trompette de la mort (washed and ends trimmed) but chestnut would also work.
RISOTTO INGREDIENTS
Make your own vegetable stock if you have time, there are also some Porcini mushroom pastes available which adds another flavour layer. You can also add a little heat by using a chopped chilli to taste.
50g of unsalted butter
10g dried porcini mushrooms 250g mixed mushrooms 4 small shallot or 1 small onion 1 tblsp of chopped celery 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil sea salt to taste Black Pepper to taste 2 large garlic cloves Truffle Oil 2 cups Arborio / Carnoroli rice 750 ml vegetable stock 1 cup white wine 100g Parmigiano-Reggiano 1/2 tsp of chopped thyme

Food&drink Risotto is one example of a traditional Italian peasant recipe that has been elevated to the status of a restaurant classic. Follow this easy to make recipe; we recommend a Sangiovese with this dish. METHOD To start the risotto, first place the dried porcini mushrooms into a bowl and soak in boiling water for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile bring the stock to a simmer on the stove. Next, finely chop the onions, then heat in a heavy bottomed sauté pan over medium-low heat and add the oil. Add the onions, celery, salt and sweat until translucent, about 6-8 minutes. Strain the porcini mushrooms and reserve the liquid. Roughly chop all of the mushrooms and set aside. Once the onions are soft and translucent, add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Then add the mushrooms to the pan, add thyme, season and cook the mushrooms for another 5 minutes, making sure all the excess liquid has evaporated. Now add the Arborio rice to the pan and sauté for about 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often until the rice turns translucent around the edges. Add wine and stir until it is completely absorbed. Add the stock one cup at a time (and the reserved mushroom stock, if desired), allowing each cup
to absorb completely before adding the next. The risotto will take about 25 - 30 minutes to fully cook. To finish, remove the risotto from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 2 minutes. Finally, fold in the parmesan, drizzle with a tiny bit of truffle oil and some butter and serve immediately.

Coals to Newcastle ...and bicycles to the Chinese!
I
t's been a busy year for us at Moulton Bicycles here in Bradford on Avon and it seems like our efforts to get word about the Moulton brand "out there" are beginning to pay off. A sign of this is the increasing number of phone calls we receive from media people and television companies, wanting a nice story to complete coffee table books, news articles, or even live national broadcasts. We hope that this brings the spotlight (and work!) to Bradford itself as well.Â

Growing number of dumped animals results in urgent Winter Appeal Bath Cats & Dogs Home urgently needs more donations for its Winter Appeal to help keep its doors open. In a year that has seen a dramatic rise in the number of cruelty cases (up 38% on 2012) across the South West, the Bath-based charity is at full capacity. Winter months are the busiest months of the year for the home, which takes in unwanted, neglected or mistreated pets from a catchment area the size of London. Karen Ethier, Animal Care & Welfare Delivery Manager, says: “The home relies solely on public donations to help keep its doors open; rising fuel costs 48
and a growing number of dumped sick and elderly animals are a very real and daunting prospect for us at the moment.” Rachel Jones, Head of Fundraising, further explains: “Staff are still shocked by the sheer volume of abandoned animals and the degree of abuse; animals that have clearly been left out in the cold to fend for themselves because they are either too old or have a medical condition. Tansy is a classic example of the kind of abuse we see (pictured). Tansy was left out in the cold, starving and riddled with tumours. It’s for this reason that this year’s Winter Appeal is so poignant.” The Bath-based charity has now been in existence since 1937. The home always runs at full capacity on a one-in-one-out basis, which means every penny counts and kennel and cattery spaces are a premium. Taking responsibility? My son has developed an annoying habit of removing clothes and leaving them strewn around the house. It appears to be my job to find, wash and deliver them to his room. I’m fed up with constantly nagging him and need him to take more responsibility for himself. Any ideas? S.Primrose, South Wraxall Answer As nagging isn’t working, I suggest refusing to wash his clothes in the short term. Perhaps when he finds no clean socks to wear, he’ll start making more of an effort. Alternatively, you could try a reward chart or a flat-out bribe. Ageing parents My parents, who are in their seventies, are thinking of moving to the area. While currently fit and active, I worry that as they get older this will not always be the case. I want to start thinking about the future, and how they will live safely, comfortably, and independently. Any thoughts? R. Windrush, BoA Answer I think you’re wise to start thinking about this now. Other than suggesting a bungalow, perhaps close to a bus stop, it’s worth remembering that in Bradford there are a number of different options available, including retirement homes and, should you need them in the future, homes offering complete care packages (see article on page 18). Valentine’s Day I have just started going out with a new man, and while things are going well, I’m unsure of how to celebrate Valentine’s Day. I want to mark the day with
something special, but not spend a fortune. Any suggestions? G. Baxter, Winsley Answer There are plenty of fantastic restaurants in the local area where you can wine and dine your new man, but if you prefer something more personal, perhaps you could prepare a delicious meal at home, and light some romantic candles. I also find a home-made card, requiring little artistic ability, goes down well. New girl Having just moved to the area, I find myself in the position of knowing nobody locally. I was hoping the parents at my daughter’s school would be more welcoming, but I find them rather unfriendly. My daughter has settled in well, while I still feel like an outsider. How can I meet some like-minded individuals? E. Bamford, Freshford Answer Sorry to hear you’re finding it hard to meet people; the playground can be unbearably cliquey. You could always volunteer at the school or join the PTA if so inclined. Is there a hobby or sport you’d be interested in pursuing? That way you’ll find people with a common interest. Good luck!

At Stonar, each child’s learning is developed in an individual and unique way. Many schools claim this, but few can really deliver. Whether a pupil is gifted in a particular academic area, requires specialist support or just needs to find their inner confidence and motivation, each has distinctive needs and ambitions which should be supported and challenged. Our ethos is to help pupils unlock their strengths and build self-confidence. For some this may be through academic grades but for others it may be an artistic, sporting or extra-curricular talent. For many, it’s about developing a sense of self-worth and a feeling that they are valued. We have high aspirations for each one. For effective individual support to work, teachers must really know the pupils: not just who they are but their learning styles and their motivations; their strengths and their fears. To do this, class sizes need to be small (averaging 15 at Stonar), the relationships must be strong and an involvement in all aspects of the pupils’ school lives is essential. Firstly we ensure that the pupil feels at ease at school and comfortable in their own skin. This is about belonging. The second factor is to recognise a pupil’s strengths and build on them. Understanding their individual learning style and finding that their teachers will understand it too, helps to develop their own sense of self-belief and confidence. Finally we provide every one of our pupils with the opportunity to shine in a safe environment where their talents and efforts will be recognised and celebrated. It is then no surprise that they exceed expectations both academically and personally, leaving the school equipped to be successful and contented adults.
We don’t take this for granted; our parents and pupils tell us that it is so.
