welcome Welcome to our August/September edition, which celebrates all things summery. With the weather hotting up, you’ll be spoilt for choice for things to do in the beautiful outdoors - if you can tear yourselves away from your back garden, of course. For ideas of how to fill the long summer holidays, look no further than our What’s On section which is, as ever, brimming with interesting events for all the family. And don’t forget it’s festival season, with Bradford’s own Arts Festival running throughout September (see their pull out guide in our centre pages), and The Woolley Festival (from 5th-7th September) offering an impressive line up of acts, including Bradford’s own Jesus Jones! Cover: Ruth Walton
This month we are featuring an exclusive article with Angela Rippon, who was in Bradford recently opening the Wiltshire Heights Care Home. Such a consummate professional and charming lady; we hope you’ll enjoy reading all about her role as an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society and how she hopes to change attitudes to dementia in the future. So, finally readers, it just falls on me to wish you a happy and relaxing summer. We’ll be back in the Autumn with another jam-packed edition. A Local Life all

Stonar to welcome boys into Senior School from 2016
Every year, from 2016, those older boys will move up the school until Stonar is coeducational right through to the Sixth Form and A levels.
Stonar, the independent day and boarding school in Atworth, Wiltshire, will take boys in the Senior School from September 2016. Girls have benefited from a Stonar education since 1895, and boys are already welcomed from ages 3 to 10. Now Stonar is opening up its education to more boys. From 2015 boys will be able to board from age 8. From 2016 they will be able to join the Senior School at 11+, as day or boarding pupils.
“This gradual change shows how carefully we are planning the move to full coeducation,” said Toby Nutt, head of Stonar. “It allows us time to focus on the needs of our boys and our girls as coeducation spreads through the Senior School.” Stonar will develop its academic and co-curricular programme to appeal to girls and boys alike. The sports provision will also be expanded and new rider development programmes are being introduced this September. Almost all Stonar’s academic and pastoral staff already have considerable working experience of coeducational schools and are looking forward to welcoming boys to the boarding community. Toby Nutt said, “These are exciting times for Stonar; current and future pupils will reap the rewards of our unique educational offering.” www.stonarschool.com

This summer, Tractor Ted’s Big Machine Weekend returns on 16th and 17th August from 12 - 4pm. During the event there will be a display ring of harvest machinery throughout the day and children will be able to enjoy jumping about on the brand new giant Tractor Ted bouncy castle and slide. Garden lovers will delight in Bowood’s incredible gardens — Winner of the HHA / Christie’s Garden of the Year 2014. Dancing Through Life
Piano Teacher’s Promise
'Dancing Through Life' was set up in 2009 for the over 60s and now has a flourishing group of dancers, up to 80 years old. We meet every Thursday from 10.30am to 11.30am in the United Church Hall, St. Margaret’s Street. The cost is £5 per session. Our style is ‘creative contemporary’, so importance is placed on exercising and relaxing the whole body, learning dance sequences and short pieces which involve memory, coordination skills and balance. Working with music, we enjoy creative group-work using these skills plus ideas, group planning, cooperation and presentation. To bring all this together within a session is very satisfying. We are a friendly group, so if you’re tempted to join us we have space for more dancers, male or female, to join in or just observe. For information contact Chris on 866579 or Ruth on 868431
A few months ago, musician Erin Shields-Pett was visited by a former student who couldn't understand why she had decided to cease giving piano lessons. Before leaving Bradford, the young woman had elicited a promise that lessons would recommence! As a result, Mrs Shields-Pett has now reopened her studio and is offering lessons on a weekly basis. Students are introduced to the wonders of the piano, as well as music theory, history and performance practices. Emphasis is placed on a relaxed holistic technique in which the whole body is used to support the fingers and wrists, allowing students to play without injury, especially during the early years of childhood development. Erin Shields-Pett is highly qualified with a BA and MA and loves teaching. Although her students have excelled in competitions, her real satisfaction comes when she knows that music has become a lifelong treasure for others. 01225 867173 shieldspett.erin@gmail.com

Award-winning Quaker Tapestry embroideries to visit Bath this August Social history springs to life with an exhibition that uncovers stories of revolutions, railways and remarkable people. The Quaker Tapestry is a modern, imaginative and collaborative embroidery created by 4,000 men, women and children from communities around the world. Each year, 20 of the 77 embroidered panels from the colourful tapestry go on their travels from their museum base in Kendal, Cumbria. For the first time they will be in Somerset, where the idea of it was first mooted. One of the panels on display in the Bath Meeting House was designed and embroidered in Bradford on Avon. There are others with county links too.
The exhibition includes a film, audio guides, children’s activities, gift shop and opportunities to see embroiderers working. Opening times are 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. Since its first public exhibition, the Tapestry has travelled to more than 150 venues in the UK, Europe and America.

After a wet start to the year, it has been a lovely spring and early summer with plenty of sunshine, and those who have installed solar panels on their roofs are smiling. Not Photo: © Richard Craft only are they saving carbon emissions but they are earning from the sun too, through the feed in tariff (FiT). Although the FiT (the amount you are paid for the electricity generated by your panels and fed into the grid) has reduced, so has the cost of the panels and it is still very well worth installing them if you have a suitable roof. With the introduction of the renewable heat incentive it is also worth considering solar thermal panels to heat your water. Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon is still running our 'bulk buy' scheme for solar with a local installer – if you are interested do get in touch. climatechampions@gmail.com

HOUSEHEADING & HOME
So much more than housesitting
L
ocal Bath entrepreneur Andrew Pike has recently launched his latest venture, designed to give something that today's business professionals and busy individuals are increasingly desperate for more of… time. Prestige Sitters is far more than just house sitting; it’s a professional, all inclusive service that is tailored to suit the varied demands and needs of busy people, who understand the value of time and how little of it we all have. The internet has changed the way we live. A consequence of the online shopping explosion is that we are all having a lot more parcels and groceries delivered throughout the day, and managing these deliveries to dovetail perfectly with our busy and unpredictable lifestyles is just another stress we can do without.
for ‘man’s best friend’ when they can’t be there.” Listening to customers’ needs is vital to the success of a service business such as Prestige Sitters, which is how Andrew’s Personal Chauffeur service developed. ‘One of our clients had been unfortunate to exceed the points on her driving licence, gained mainly for speeding and driving while stressed. She asked if we could provide a driver for her and we obliged. Even now her license is clear, she still regularly uses us to drive her to business meetings, so she can work and not worry about any more points!’ Prestige will drive you and your vehicle whenever you need to arrive relaxed and stress free. www.prestigesitters.com 07730 787813
Ex MOD security officer Andrew recognised the demand for home owners to have a reliable, honest and professional service to look after some of the more mundane aspects of life. Waiting in for deliveries is a regular requirement of Andrew’s customers, along with additional peace of mind for when tradesman need to visit and carry out works and the homeowner can’t be there. Andrew said, ‘Waiting in for deliveries was how it all started; now our customers trust us to look after many aspects of their home, even keeping pets and plants watered and fed whilst they are away, and providing security checks on their property. Melksham Tyres Competition Winner As reported by A Local Life in April, Melksham Tyre Supplies decided to celebrate their 50th birthday by giving a brand new Peugeot 107 car to one of their lucky customers in a prize draw to celebrate the milestone anniversary. “We thought we would do something special,” said James Love, who now runs the business that his father Colin set up in 1964, “We wanted something that would make a bit of an impact!” During April, May and June, all customers that bought two or more Avon tyres were entered into the prize draw. The last customer of the day on the 30th of June was asked to pick the winner out of the hat, and the winner was duly telephoned. Answering the call and being told that he had won a brand new car, Simon Bridgford-Whittick was unable to believe what he was hearing. “I thought it was a joke,” said Mr Bridgford-Whittock, “and my wife still can’t believe it. It was a complete shock.” “It was great that the prize went to a Melksham person who has been a good customer of ours for 20 years or more,” says James Love, speaking from the family firm’s showroom on Station Approach, next to Melksham’s railway station. “My dad started the company after working at the Avon Tyres plant, now Cooper Tyres, and realising that there wasn’t anyone selling them locally,” he says, reflecting with obvious pride on the company’s half-century of trading. “We still retain strong links with Cooper and Avon Tyres and we can source a huge range of tyres – from a Fiesta to a Ferrari – with same-day availability,” James adds with a smile.
How to feel happy and well: JOIN A CHOIR! Let your body generate its very own brand of anti-depressants! A recent study at Oxford Brookes University said ‘... joining a choir could be a cost effective way to improve people’s wellbeing.’ The study found that singing in a choir was ‘significantly’ more effective at improving people’s mood than a team sport. If you’d like to have a go, but have been made to feel that you can’t sing – don’t believe it. With Photo: © Richard Clarke the right support, you can enjoy the thrill of harmony singing. If you already sing, but would like to try some new songs, come along to All in Harmony. Either way, we can promise that you’ll enjoy the feeling of being part of a big group singing in harmony. We sing songs from every time and every place, there are no auditions, you’ll never be asked to sing on your own and we don’t use written music. Performances are completely optional and although some of our members claimed to be too nervous to sing in public, they’ve now become star-struck performers! What are you waiting for? Join our happy, friendly choir that will give you a nice warm glow, to help keep you going through life’s ups and downs. Lisa and Chris Samuel welcome new members throughout the term – although the best time to start is at the beginning, when we’ll all be learning new songs. All in Harmony starts again on Tuesday 16th September, 7.30pm at the Wiltshire Music Centre. www.singingwithattitude.com voxbox@btinternet.com 24

BOOK REVIEW
I Predict a Riot
Catherine’s first novel, We Can be Heroes, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and long/ shortlisted for various other awards, and I Predict a Riot is surely destined to garner similar critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of the stories behind the riots. And like We Can be Heroes, which is being adapted for the big screen, it seems ripe for adaptation. Written almost as a screenplay, its fastpaced, action-packed plot will grip you from start to finish and leave you reeling at the end.
by Catherine Bruton (Egmont, 2014) I Predict a Riot is the third crossover novel by Bradford on Avon writer Catherine Bruton. In publishing speak, ‘crossover’ means it’s aimed at readers of all ages. Or, as the Financial Times put it, “Bruton’s is the kind of writing that appeals to both kids and adults, in the same way as Mark Haddon or Michael Morpurgo.”
Opening with the lines, “One of my friends is dead and the other might as well be. All because of me,” it will inevitably draw comparisons with Steven Kelman’s award-winning Pigeon English or Meg Rosoff’s How I live Now, although Bruton says she was most inspired by S E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, which she first read as a teen.
I Predict a Riot was inspired by the UK riots of 2011. Set in London, where Bruton used to work in youth groups with teenage gang members, it tells the story of three kids from very different backgrounds who set out to make a movie and end up involved in the riots in a summer that will change their lives forever.
Bruton teaches part time at King Edward’s School in Bath and acknowledges the input of her pupils in the dedication: “You all make me think… make me want to write better.” The Guardian has described Bruton as, “One of the finest teen writers of recent years,” and this hard-hitting, hilarious, heartbreaking new title is surely destined to cement her reputation and become a modern classic. “Bruton’s is the kind of writing that appeals to both kids and adults, in the same way as Mark Haddon or Michael Morpurgo.”
Maggie, the politician’s daughter, is hiding behind the lens of her video camera. Tokes is the son of a notorious gang member, running from trouble and looking for a new start. And Little Pea is the kid everyone has given up on — abused by his mum, neglected by society and pushed around by the ruthless Starfish Gang who rule the streets, he is lawless, untrustworthy, funny, witty, reckless, tragic and ultimately heroic. An Artful Dodger for our times, I guarantee that Little Pea will make you laugh, make you cry, make you angry … break your heart.

A LOCAL LIFE
Launch of Malmesbury Edition of Local Life Free magazines of this type become a resource for residents and for visitors and for that reason, you will begin to see it around the town in community and business spaces as well.
I
’ve been working in and around Malmesbury for the last six years though the town has been known to me for much longer – I’ve lived in Wiltshire for almost 20 years now. When André Balkham-Jones approached me with the idea of launching a Local Life for the town and the surrounding areas – I took a long, hard look at what this magazine offers residents, businesses and charities in the area before saying yes. I already knew that it had been successful for Bradford on Avon so the magazine was offering something of value in that community. I strongly believe it can offer something of equal value in this part of Wiltshire.
With each issue, the aim is to deliver news, lifestyle articles and events relevant to you. This is an area, and county, with beautiful countryside, picturesque places to visit, great food establishments and a vibrant and connected business community. I look forward to sharing what’s on offer.
in current affairs, political and factual entertainment programming. In 2009, I set up my own media consultancy, Mums In Media Ltd, offering effective PR services to businesses, sole traders and individuals. However, I’ve continued to write articles in Wiltshire and I’m also still a television producer/director. At home, I’m married with three children and a step-daughter so life is very busy indeed. I’m proud to be a working mum and proud to be bringing up my family in our beautiful county.
As for me, I’ve been a journalist for more than 25 years working in print and television. Initially I worked on a weekly newspaper in Somerset and then moved to the Swindon Advertiser where I worked for five years ending up as business editor.
If you have any feature ideas for the magazine, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Please drop me – or my colleagues – an email at malmesbury@alocallife.co.uk.
I made the move into television in the mid 1990s and worked for ITV West as a series producer

BUSINESS FEATURE
Local Boy Done Good Terry Hillier Managing Director, RACS Group
T
erry Hillier grew up in Warminster from humble beginnings. His father joined the Wiltshire Police Force and was a well known ‘Bobby’ about town; his mother, a trained bookkeeper, worked for a local bookmaker before joining a thriving import business, Junction 18, where she still works today. Terry attended New Close Primary School and then Kingdown, the local comprehensive, where he excelled at Maths and Physics. Terry left school with an ‘O’ Level in Maths (taken 6 months early), 8 GCSE’s and ‘A’ Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics & Chemistry, which earned him a place on a Maths & Computing degree at Cardiff University. Hardworking even at this early age, Terry spent his holidays working for local businesses, Junction 18, and later, Lyons Seafoods, which gave him a taste for financial independence and security. This innate ability to understand numbers and logic have stood him in great stead for his career with a variety of financially-based organisations prior to forming RACS Group. RACS Group’s growth is a genuine ‘rags to riches’ story, which should give inspiration to all entrepreneurs who dream of creating a successful business. Led by his infectious energy, Terry has a clear and defined vision for the business, which is to be “the UK’s most compliant, client-focused payroll solutions provider”. In little more than seven years the company has evolved from a back-bedroom start-up barely ‘washing its financial face’, to a corporate entity
turning over in excess of £75million. Perhaps even more startling is the fact that the business still has vast potential for continued expansion and the current eye-watering figures represent a proverbial ‘drop in the ocean’ as to what lies ahead. RACS Group has established itself as a serious player in a growing marketplace, enhanced by a newly devised corporate identity, based on playful characters to represent the respective sectors in which the company operates. Investing in a concerted advertising campaign propelled the characters into the consciousness of the industry and established RACS Group as a true contender. Winning the Fastest Growing Company in the South West Award for both 2013 and 2014 by Insider magazine provided a fillip for all those connected to the business and validated Hillier’s faith in the compliance-based message. Staff levels increased accordingly and soon his premises were creaking at the seams. An opportunity arose to refurbish a much-loved dilapidated snooker hall, in the centre of Warminster which Terry frequented in his youth. Characteristically, he seized the moment, spending almost £1 million to create RACS Group’s current state-of-the- art headquarters in Three Horseshoes Walk, providing a cutting-edge working environment for RACS employees. Now RACS Group’s predicted turnover up to April 2015 is estimated to exceed £120 million and more and more leading recruitment agencies are becoming clients. The age of austerity placed a new emphasis on compliance as HMRC went on the warpath to reclaim any unpaid taxes (perceived or otherwise) from an industry still adjusting to a new legislative order. Almost without noticing, RACS Group had become the safest and most reliable provider in the UK. RACS Group continues to flourish and diversify in equal measure. Terry’s belief in marketing inspired the formation of an in-house creative agency and his love of building inevitably resulted in a new property development division. Seven years later and this wonderful commercial story is still unravelling as there is still a lot more to come from Terry Hillier and RACS Group. www.racsgroup.com

Food&drink “...a mix of historical and modern British cuisine, seasoned with current food trends”
METHOD — Fish and Stew Pre-heat the oven to 200°c. First of all, place the fish fillets on an oven tray lined with baking parchment. Season with salt and pepper and place in the fridge. In a high sided frying pan, fry the little gem in rapeseed oil until just browning and remove from the pan. At this point put the fish in the oven, drizzled with rapeseed oil. Add the vegetable stock and butter to the pan, bring to a simmer and add the peas. Poach for two minutes, then add the little gem, the samphire, and the tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper and lemon juice.
Reduce the stock and butter to a glaze, so the vegetables are nice and shiny. Remove fish from the oven (8 minutes per inch is a rough cooking guide) and check it is just cooked through.

HEALTHCARE SHOPPING HEADING
The Height of residential Living Wiltshire Heights Luxury Elderly Care Home Opened by Angela Rippon
Angela Rippon and Selvie Naidoo - Home Manager.
A
ngela Rippon, ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, recently opened the Wiltshire Heights Care Home, situated close to the centre of picturesque Bradford on Avon. She was happy to endorse this West Country residency, which 36
is well-loved for its charming atmosphere. This new purposebuilt care home provides 24-hour residential, nursing, dementia and respite care for the elderly. All 63 private bedrooms have en-suite shower and loo facilities. The stylish yet considered design of the home ensures that it exceeds the regulatory requirements of modern care homes. The home is just that to all of the residents. All of the rooms are generously proportioned, stylish, and sympathetic to the wants and needs of those who live there, with well-appointed day-rooms including dining rooms and a private dining room, a choice of lounges, a hairdressing salon, a large activities room, and two wonderful south-facing terraces, as well as landscape-designed gardens. On hand are expertly trained and professional staff dedicated to the care, comfort and dignity of all residents, with special emphasis
given to promoting independence, privacy and respect. As Angela Rippon will vouch for, as her mother Edna suffered from the condition, caring for a person with dementia can be emotionally and physically exhausting. It’s important for families to be reassured that their loved ones are treated with respect and their dignity is preserved. It’s about more than just care — it’s also about peace of mind for the families, who can suffer tremendous guilt when their beloved begins life in residential care. The Wiltshire Heights care home is warm and engaging and has gone above and beyond to ensure that their residents have the best quality of life possible.

The art of movement Catherine Truscott is a dancer by training, now teaching Pilates in Bradford-on-Avon and Colerne. Catherine loves movement, but has always valued the stillness of mind that comes from meditation, and two years ago found herself inventing her own distinct method, combining meditation with movement. Catherine then needed something to call her new meditation technique. ‘Inasphere’ was born, “As we use geometry to shape the meditation, and subtle energy to shape the movement.” “For me, Inasphere is the next stage on from the physical alignment that Pilates brings. Inasphere is alignment for the body’s energy system, bringing a sense of clearing, balancing then enhancing our inner energy, and calming the mind too.” “The best description is: it’s meditation for fidgets!” 38

Tour of Britain visits Wiltshire You are a brick! Leading international cyclists will be racing through the streets of Wiltshire this September after confirmation that a number of the county’s towns will feature on the route map for one of the world’s key cycling events. The Tour of Britain, which attracts more than 100 top international cyclists, will thread its way through the centre of Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Devizes and Pewsey on September 12th 2014. The British national squad and international teams will be racing as part of the event, which attracts more than 1.5m spectators in total and runs from September 7 to 14th 2014. The Tour of Britain is considered to be a highlight of the UK’s cycling calendar and the country’s biggest professional cycling event.
Thanks to your generous support, the 'Be a Brick' scheme has raised over £140,000 towards building a new Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospital, Bath — thank you! The scheme was launched by the hospital’s charity, The Forever Friends Appeal, with their ambassador for the scheme, actress Brenda Blethyn OBE. Brenda has been overwhelmed by the support received so far and hopes that you will continue to buy bricks, rows or walls. Every ‘brick’ purchased will help build an exceptional Cancer Centre that will transform cancer care at your local hospital. Many of you have been purchasing virtual 'bricks' as gifts for friends and families. If you haven't got involved with the 'Be a Brick' scheme yet, the list of ideas on our website will give you plenty of inspiration! www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk 01225 825691.

PETS’ PLACE
Be Alert for Ticks Garston Veterinary Group see many dogs and cats with tick-related problems each summer and receive many enquiries from owners. Ticks carry several diseases, the most important of which in the UK is Lyme disease. Worryingly, the number of cases in both humans and dogs is increasing every year. There are a few very effective treatments available to prevent ticks attaching to dogs and cats but care must be taken that whichever is chosen is safe for your size and type of pet. If no tick treatment is used it is important for pets to be checked for ticks frequently and for them to be removed with a tick hook as soon as they are spotted. Care should be taken not to leave any part of the tick behind as this can cause nasty skin lesions.

UP CLOSE many people. She says this was clear at the first meeting of the Dementia Friendly Communities Champion Group, set up to drive work on the Prime Minister’s challenge.
Dementia and Dignity by Clare Macnaughton
A Local Life met British icon, broadcaster and journalist Angela Rippon at the opening of the Port Haven Care Homes, Wiltshire Heights Care Home in Bradford on Avon. She has championed the cause of people with dementia in her role as an Alzheimer’s Society ambassador. Her objective is considerable: to change the attitudes of a nation. For Angela Rippon OBE, however, making the UK a place where people with dementia can feel comfortable and safe is of paramount importance. Angela, whose mother Edna died with dementia in 2009, is committed to making sure the condition is better understood and that people who have dementia are accepted by their communities and not stigmatised. 50
She says, “What’s fascinating about the whole process of creating dementia-friendly communities is that it sounds easy but it is a huge job. We’re trying to change the mindset of a generation to accept dementia and not be afraid of it, to take away the stigma associated with it. As a result of that we want people to be given information about dementia and how to deal with people with dementia and their carers so that we can maintain their dignity and independence.”
“At our very first group meeting it was fascinating to see representatives from banking, insurance, supermarkets, department stores, social groups, local councils, the fire brigades, the police, city councils — all of these people coming together. They were saying, yes, not only are we already thinking along these lines but we are pushing at an open door because it’s evident that the staff are already full of people who have an association with dementia in some way.”
Showing the way Angela hopes that by 2015 dementia-friendly communities such as Wiltshire Heights in Bradford on Avon will exist across the country, and that the UK can be an example for others. “If we can show the way here in Britain and ensure that people with dementia and their carers can maintain their independence and their dignity — because the rest of society understands the problems that they have and how to deal with them — then that is going to be the most amazing thing.”
Permeating society The impact of dementia is increasing. For Angela, the changes in attitude need to reach all areas of society in order to be successful, but this is feasible because dementia has affected so

HEALTHCARE
Understanding dementia The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse. Diagnosing dementia is often difficult, particularly in the early stages. The GP is the first person to consult. The GP may then refer the person being diagnosed to a specialist consultant. Assessments can include conversations with the person being diagnosed and those close to them, a physical examination, memory tests and/or brain scans. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the most commonly used test for complaints of memory problems or when a diagnosis of dementia is being considered. Becoming forgetful does not necessarily mean that you have dementia. Memory loss can be an effect of ageing. It can also be a symptom of stress or depression. In rare cases, dementia-like symptoms can be caused by vitamin deficiencies and/or a brain tumour. A definite diagnosis of the cause of dementia may only be confirmed at post mortem or, in very rare instances, through a brain biopsy. SLICE OF LIFE

LIFE
Surviving the summer holidays Can you give me some tips on how to survive the summer holidays with my three exhausting children? We cannot afford a holiday away this year, and my husband can only take a few days off. Six weeks seems like an awfully long time to fill. J Powell, Winsley
Answer Six weeks does seem like a long time, but once you get into the swing of things, it will soon go. I would suggest doing as much outdoor stuff as you can (have a look in our ‘What’s On’ section for some ideas), or team up with friends for day trips and picnics. Maybe have the odd treat up your sleeve for rainy days. Most of all, rejoice in the knowledge that you have no school run to contend with!
boasting about their daughters’ achievements, be it school levels, ballet exams etc, etc. It drives me mad, though luckily my daughter seems oblivious. Any advice? G Powell, Melksham
Answer Yes. Just ignore them! They obviously have too much time on their hands and nothing better to do. Just carry on enjoying your daughter and don’t get drawn in to their discussions. It’s a waste of time and energy.
Mid-life crisis? My teenager son has just finished his exams and is lolling around the house making a mess and doing nothing helpful. How can I get him to help out more and stop treating the house like a hotel? P Thomas, Trowbridge
I am soon to celebrate my 40th birthday, although ‘celebrate’ is definitely not the word I’d use. I feel thoroughly depressed at having officially reached middle age. My friends want to throw me a party and I just want to crawl into a hole and pretend it’s not happening. How can I embrace this new stage of my life? S Chapman, Midford

Be tough. State that he’s old enough now to do certain things around the house – make a list for him and leave him to it. After all, presumably he’ll be leaving home soon and will have to fend for himself, so you’re actually doing him a favour. I’d also suggest he finds a summer job...
I promise you that there is life after 40, and it’s true that you’re only as old/young as you feel. I’m sure you’ve achieved a great deal in your 40 years on the planet and maybe having a party (if you want to) could celebrate that, and mark the start of a new era full of exciting possibilities.
