Where shopping offers so much more...

At our farm shops we offer so much more than fresh, locally grown food and produce. We have outdoor spaces in which to eat, play areas for children and a place to shop. welcome

T

he summer holidays are in full swing - rain or shine. So much to do and enjoy. The Rio Olympics is encouraging one and all to keep fit! Jazz Carlin from Bradford on Avon is swimming for team GB. She’s been training at Bath University’s Sports Training Village - which is open to all! There are cycling challenges all over the place and you can raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance while you’re pedalling. There’s even skydiving and moonlight walking to benefit Dorothy House and the RuH. Riverford Organics offers a crunchy summery Bean and Herb Pasta to tickle our palates, while Food Idols have oils and vinaigrettes to dress summer salads; succulent fruit smoothies; and a range of herb teas, which are just as good with ice and a slice. As we move into September there are choirs to join, courses to take, and entertainment to enjoy. A new season of music kicks off at the Wiltshire Music Centre; the BoA Arts Festival takes off into space with poetry, talks, art, music and a starry lantern procession; and Bradfordian Tim Weeks lights up the small screen joining presenter Paul Martin in BBC’s new feel good ‘Street Auction’. The house market has stayed buoyant despite Brexit doomers, and there’s sound advice from BLB Solicitors on the do’s and don’ts of buying houses ‘together’. As we reluctantly move towards autumn, advice from the doctor suggests we take preventative measures against the winter ‘flu! So let’s enjoy every moment of these hazy, lazy days of summer… Angela Clarence

WILTSHIRE MUSIC

Classical BRIT winner Alison Balsom tops Wiltshire Music Centre’s new Season

W

iltshire Music Centre launches its Autumn Winter Season with a programme of international stars and special collaborations. Stellar British trumpeter Alison Balsom makes her WMC debut with pianist Tom Poster (29 Oct). Ranked as one of the most distinctive and ground-breaking musicians on the International circuit, Balsom will perform a programme of Schubert, Enescu and Brahms alongside a selfpenned composition. The classical programme also sees appearances from violinist Tasmin Little, the English Touring Opera, pianist Joanna MacGregor and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Screenings of live opera and ballet from Covent Garden also continue throughout the year. Folk highlights include BBC Folk Singer of the Year Nancy Kerr with her Sweet Visitor Band (7 Oct), contemporary Scottish group Blazin’ Fiddles (26 Nov) and acoustic quartet Cardboard Fox in a special double bill with American / Argentinian roots duo Joe Troop & Diego Sánchez (4 Nov). The Centre also hosts a new series of intimate gigs in the Bar with BoA promotions, launching

with alt-country duo The Black Feathers (9 Oct). Portuguese vocalist Dona Rosa makes a rare UK appearance to share her deeply emotive and expressive form of traditional Fado music - straight from the heart of Lisbon (15 Nov). Blind since early childhood and born into poverty, Rosa has since risen to worldwide recognition since releasing her first album in 2000. The concert will be a tribute to Lisbon itself with imagery of this most famous city. The International line-up continues with leading American pianist Jeremy Denk (23 Sep), young French chamber group the Van Kuijk Quartet (6 Nov) and a showcase of soundscapes from Sweden, Slovenia and Brazil featuring celebrated percussionist Adriano Adewale and 2016 Parliamentary Jazz Award-winner Emilia Mårtensson (2 Dec). Jazz Artist in Residence Dennis Rollins makes a welcome return as part of Jean Toussaint’s Art Blakey tribute Roots & Herbs and Claire Martin OBE joins saxophonist Ray Gelato on stage as part of their Swinging Affair tour.

Orchestra) with an exciting interactive performance of ‘All Around the World’, and leading percussionists O Duo bring their show of big drum family fun Bish Bash Bosh to the stage (27 Nov). The Centre is also offering lots of £1 children’s tickets and Free Under-25 offers to selected concerts! Across the year the Centre is also running exciting events for young people through its Creative Learning Programme, including monthly Zone Club for learning disabled young adults, and its Young Curators Programme for budding music and event organisers. The Autumn Winter concert season at Wiltshire Music Centre provides a treat for anyone who enjoys (or would like to try!) fantastic live music of all kinds.

indsey and Stash Huchrak moved from Bath to BoA in 2013 and have been regulars on the local music scene with their slick and stylish jazz trio This Side of Paris. With Lindsey singing, Stash on double bass and Jim Marshall playing guitar, the trio has now released a 10 track album entitled ‘Takin’ it Easy’. “A strong melody travels gracefully through time, and none more so than these ten melodies from the 40's, 50's and 60's. It has given us enormous pleasure to inhabit, arrange and record this album and we are eager to share it with you”. Catch them playing at The Fat Fowl for the BoA Arts Festival ‘Space Speakeasy’ on Friday September 9th. S

ing Alive invites people of all abilities to sing as a healthy way to freely express a range of emotions, thoughts and experience. We believe everyone can sing and that there is something particularly powerful about singing together with others. We sing traditional English, Welsh, European, African and American folk, Gospel, and Pop in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Our founding principle is that singing is open to all. There are no auditions and all songs are taught by ear. We welcome confident singers who want to be part of a friendly singing community, those looking to forget the stresses of the day, and those who love to sing even if their early singing experiences were negative. We particularly welcome more men to join the choir. We meet Tuesday mornings in the United Church, BoA and Thursday evenings in the Town Hall, Devizes. We also run workshops and singing holidays and there are opportunities to be part of choir events, gathering and performances. Term dates, costs and events singalive.org (new term begins 2nd week of September).

A Tribute to the

Town’s Industrial Past

BoA Scout Pavilion Makeover

fter 18 months of renovation work, the 1st Bradford on Avon Scouts have unveiled their £25,000 refurbished Scout hut with an upgraded kitchen, heating system, disabled toilets and upgraded disabled access.

A

19th century rubber rolling machine known as ‘The Iron Duke’ will have its official unveiling on Saturday 24 September at its permanent site on Kingston Road. The first machine of its kind in Europe, it bonded vulcanised rubber with woven cloth to make waterproof sheeting. Installed at the Avon Rubber Factory in 1848, it paved the way for making Bradford on Avon the global leader in rubber production for over 100 years. It was finally dismantled and decommissioned in the 1970s. The campaign to return the machine to BoA was launched by The Preservation Trust, Bradford on Avon Museum Society and the Bradford on Avon Community Area Network. Funding was kick-started by the late Alex Moulton, great-grandson of the factory’s founder, and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund; the Arts Council’s Preservation of Industrial and Scientific Material Fund; Wiltshire Council; and the BoA Town Council - to support community engagement activities linked to the machine. bradfordonavonmuseum.co.uk/ iron-duke

12-year-old Izzy Geddes observed “It looks really cool and still fits in with its history.” Amber Smith aged 11 added “It’s really important that we have good wheelchair access too, and that it’s more environmentally friendly.” The transformation was made possible courtesy of donations from the Samuel William Farmer Trust, Cobb Farr, the Town Council, Wiltshire Youth Network, Bluebird Care, and the Colonel Llewellyn Palmer Educational Trust. The Scouts also raised funds. Chairman Neil Baker reflected “Next up is the refurbishment of the garage and replacement of our minibus!” The scout hut has been open for 40 years and a total of 80 Scouts, Cubs and Beavers currently attend the group. scouts.org.uk FB: 1st Bradford on Avon Scouts

Cricket Pavilion Security

E

lectric shutters are being installed at the Victory Field cricket pavilion to keep out vandals. Multiple break-ins have caused thousands, of pounds’ worth of damage over the years and the Town Council has agreed to fit security shutters this summer costing £5,680. Councillor Jon Potter explained “The damage has been really bad in the past and these shutters make it pretty much impossible to penetrate.” Curiously, the pavilion is used by the town’s football teams in the winter and the cricket club in summer, but the break-ins usually occur in the summer. What have people got against cricket? Sadly, the Beanacre and Melksham Cricket Club Pavilion burnt down in early June and the Club has thanked the local community for rallying round with overwhelming support. “Meanwhile, we’re battling on and still playing our matches,” said Club Secretary Andy Footner, adding “Wiltshire Council want to meet with us to discuss future facilities.” bradfordonavoncricketclub.hitscricket.com beanacreandmelksham.play-cricket.com www.alocallife.co.uk

LEGAL FEATURE

First comes love, then the mortgage … Sarah Jackson, Head of Family law at BLB Solicitors, stresses the importance of getting legal advice before living together Photo: © Phil Hawksworth

A

re you thinking about cohabiting? If you and your partner are buying for the first time, is one of you contributing more than the other, perhaps using funds from the older generation? Perhaps you are entering a cohabiting relationship later in life and have adult children whose interests you wish to protect. If so, it is important to think about what might happen if you and your partner were to separate or if one of you were to die. Joint owners can own as “joint tenants” or as “tenants in common”. The type of ownership you choose will affect what happens to your home on the death of you or your co-owner and how the proceeds are divided if the property is sold. Equally, if a property is being bought in the sole name of one

of you, but the other is contributing to the purchase price and/or is going to live in the property as their home, this may affect what happens to the property on the owner’s death and the division of the proceeds on a sale. Failure to agree and properly record your interests in the property before purchase (or before commencing cohabitation if one is moving into the property of another) could lead to costly litigation in the event of a dispute. It is important therefore to ensure you record your intentions accurately in a declaration of trust and/or a cohabitation agreement (sometimes referred to as a ‘living together agreement’). The former will simply record your respective beneficial interests in the property. The latter can deal with various

additional issues such as what should happen if one of you wishes to sell the property and realise your investment and the other does not. If you are borrowing money from, or being gifted money by, your parents you may wish to consider giving them a beneficial interest in the property or a legal charge. Finally, please remember that if you go on to marry your partner, the court may redistribute your assets including your respective shares in your property on divorce notwithstanding the terms of any declaration of trust. This may be avoided by entering into a pre-nup or post-nup. Sarah Jackson is a member of the Law Society’s Advanced Family Law panel with a specialism in cohabitation law. From Wessex Auction to Street Auction Local boy Tim Weeks presenter for new BBC show - Angela Clarence

T

im Weeks loved playing leads in school plays. He also spent Saturdays helping out his auctioneer Dad at Wessex Auction Rooms near Chippenham. Sounds like the ideal background for a TV anchor on an auction programme, particularly when the boy’s childhood dream was to become TV Presenter…and yes, dreams really do come true. Street Auction is a brand new BBC1 feel good programme - a cross between Flog It! and DIY SOS. Scheduled to air for

24

15 straight weekdays from September 26th at 9.15 am, it is fronted by Paul Martin, (known for a variety of BBC antiques programmes). Working with one of three young co-presenters they look to discover a deserving neighbour, and then galvanise the local community to help that person out. Paul and his co-presenter canvas neighbours to donate unwanted items to raise money in a ‘pop up’ street auction - the finale to a festive street party which the community help organise. The twist in the programme is that the worthy nominee has no idea that the money being raised is for them, until the very last moment.

www.alocallife.co.uk

“It was a little nerve-racking at first,” explained Tim, “but we soon got into the swing of knocking on doors, explaining the plan and then helping the residents identify all kinds of interesting but unwanted items buried in attics, drawers and garden sheds. When the grand total is announced and the benefactor revealed it’s quite often been the person who has contributed the most to pulling it all together!” 2016 has been a roller coaster year for Tim who lives with his wife and two children in Bradford on Avon. Having worked at Wessex Auction Rooms for six years, he bought the company from his father with best friend

Martin Hughes, last January. “I hope we’ve injected new zest into the business. We want to give people as good an experience as possible, and go that little bit further… We love selling to collectors because the items are their passion. We love having dealers in the room because they have money on their hip and they have to buy. There’s also an exciting new market of nesting 20 and 30 year olds who are interested in buying beautiful and durable furniture instead of flat packs. We’re okay with children running around the auction room too. Toys are a growing market. Star Wars items in particular. Within

the sphere of collectors, they blow everything else out of the water.” It could well be that talking about his increasingly celebrated Toy Auctions on BBC Wiltshire, led to his being approached to audition for Street Auction. “I had to make a video but it was my five-yearold who really stole the show. Thank heavens they needed a grown up…” Meanwhile, Tim and his business partner Martin continue to pour boundless energy and verve into the auction rooms, as their natural charisma keep the buyers buoyant and happy. RECIPE

This is a really fresh, summery dish, with crunch from the beans and tanginess from the lemon and Parmesan. You can use any green bean (runner, French, finely sliced flat beans, double-podded broad beans, even sugar snap peas).

Serves 4

Bean and Herb Pasta METHOD

INGREDIENTS

Add the pasta to a large pan of salted boiling water and cook according to the packet instructions. When you drain it, reserve a couple of ladles of the cooking water.

400g long pasta (e.g. spaghetti, linguine, tagliatelle)

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the beans, garlic, lemon zest and juice and gently warm for 1 minute (keep an eye on the garlic so it doesn’t burn). Remove from the heat. Add the pasta to the frying pan, along with the three quarters of the fresh herbs and half the grated Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper and toss gently to combine everything. Add some of the reserved pasta water to loosen it up.

400g green beans, prepared, blanched until just tender, then refreshed in cold water; if using sugar snaps, just throw them in raw 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped zest and juice of 1 lemon, to taste 2 handfuls of mixed herbs (e.g. parsley, mint, chervil, tarragon, chives, dill), chopped

* Add some cooked and chopped spinach or chard leaves. * Throw in some leftover roast chicken or fried bacon lardons. * Swap the Parmesan for some crumbled blue cheese. * Instead of using beans, grate two or three large courgettes and fry them for a couple of minutes with the garlic and lemon before tossing with the pasta.

100g Parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated salt and pepper

Transfer the pasta to a large serving bowl and sprinkle over the remaining herbs and Parmesan to serve.

Fresh Summer Herbs – adding depth and interest to look and flavour Basil

Dill

Parsley

Basil is a delicate herb that bruises easily so treat it with care. Basil pairs beautifully with tomatoes - raw, roasted or cooked into a sauce. To avoid going black, store it somewhere cool rather than cold, and slice the leaves with a very sharp knife, or tear.

Feathery dill’s mild aniseed flavour is underrated in the UK. Try it in tomato, cucumber and radish salads and with beetroot and feta. Dill also pairs brilliantly with soured cream, yoghurt and

Fresh, cool and green, parsley’s powerful flavour is versatile, be it flat-leaf or curly. Use a little more of the curly to achieve the same degree of flavour as the flat leaf.

Chervil

Mint

The flavour of chervil pairs well with delicate flavours such as poultry, fish, eggs and summer vegetables. Use chervil as a garnish, or blitz with tarragon, chives, parsley, oil and capers to make a vibrant green sauce that is fantastic on salmon.

Chives Chives have a mild oniony flavour. Pair them with eggs, potatoes, cheese, or fish. Chop finely to release their flavour and add them at the end of cooking, or in salads, or as a garnish. Mixed into sour cream, chives make a lively dip. The purple flowers are edible, try breaking them up and sprinkle them over a potato salad.

Coriander Grassy, cooling and citrussy, coriander leaf is a match for hot and spicy food. Try it, too, on tomato salads, in guacamole or with fatty meats such as lamb and pork. Coriander’s flavour dies when cooked, so use it raw as a garnish or add it to a dish right at the end of cooking.

cream cheese. It enhances simply cooked salmon, chicken, new potatoes and eggs. Mint has a fresh, sweet flavour and cooling aftertaste. It works well with fatty foods such as lamb or spicy Middle-Eastern dishes. Particularly good with feta, yoghurt, cucumber, melon, peas, oranges and aubergine. Mint leaves bruise easily so stack a few in a neat pile, roll up tightly like a cigar and then slice crossways into thin ribbons.

Oregano and Marjoram Quite strongly flavoured, especially when dried, they stand up to spicy flavours - Mexicanstyle beef or bean chilli. They work well with grilled or roast meat, fish and vegetables along with garlic and olive oil. They enhance tomato sauces for pasta and pizza, and with a little red chilli in the mix. Add to a dish early, to give them time to cook and infuse.

No50 August/September 2016

Sorrel Has a strong acidic flavour, combine with other leaves for a zingy green salad, but go easy on the vinegar in the dressing. Use to brighten up buttery mashed potatoes, meat or cheese pies, or rich spicy stews.

Tarragon A little tarragon goes a long way. It goes well with fish, chicken, egg dishes, asparagus, mushrooms and carrots. Tarragon excels in creamy sauces for chicken and rabbit, and in Béarnaise sauce for steak. Cut tarragon quickly blackens, so chop it at the last minute.

Tip STORING HERBS To lengthen the life of fresh herbs, remove any rubber bands or ties, swish in a bowl of cold water and let any dirt sink to the bottom. Spin dry or shake in a clean tea towel. Layer in a plastic box with sheets of kitchen paper to absorb the remaining water. Finish with a final sheet of paper, then seal and store in the fridge – they should last for a week or even two. 33

The Pollination Experts

In mainland Australia, where there are no bumblebees, tomato flowers are pollinated by humans. Bumblebees pollinate tomatoes because they are capable of buzz pollination. Tomato flowers do not readily release their pollen, but when a bumblebee grabs a flower and emits a high pitched buzz, they do. You can help these experts by growing bee friendly flowers throughout the year. Bumblebees usually look for existing holes in which to nest. For other solitary bees, bee bricks of wood or stone can have holes drilled into them, or bee nest boxes made in which they lay their eggs.

I

Bumblebees are efficient pollinators leaving a scent from their feet on the flowers they have visited to let others know not to visit. The scent wears off by the time the flower has refilled with nectar.

nsects pollinate our crops: bumblebees, other solitary bees, hoverflies and honey bees. They all have mechanisms which enable them to transfer the pollen from the male anther to the female stigma leading to fertilisation As all flowers differ in size and shape there is a need for a diverse range of insects.

Bees and solitary insects have declined in the last 70 years, because of the loss of wildflowers, the use of pesticides and the production of some ornamental plants.

pneumonia, nerve or brain damage. As the virus is always changing, the best way is to have a yearly flu jab between October and November. You may experience temporary soreness at the injection site, and some get a slight fever, but these are short-lived. A Flu vaccination does not prevent coughs and colds, and does not cause flu. Most people recover after a week or two, but some develop complications such as

New Office Accomodation at Handle House

unique building in Trowbridge with links to the town’s cloth manufacturing heritage is available to rent as office space.

Built in 1844 as part of Studley Mill, the walls of the Grade IIlisted Handle House in Stallard Street feature distinctive open bricks that helped to dry the teasel handles used to brush wet cloth. The 1,834 sq ft property on the banks of the River Biss has been extensively refurbished to provide quality office accommodation. “Handle House is in a good, central location next to the multi-storey Asda car park and The Shires shopping centre,“ said Colin Scragg of Carter Jonas, “the refurbishment has retained the building’s period features - oak floors and timber panelled walls - while modernising the space with perimeter cabling, mounted spotlights and uplighters, electric wall-mounted heaters and an alarm.” Thought to be the only building of its kind left in the country, Handle House will make a stimulating home for the right enterprise. DOROTHY HOUSE - HRH is the icing on our birthday cake After arriving at Winsley by helicopter, Princess Anne opened Dorothy House’s new 40th anniversary exhibition and met with several patients before being welcomed by staff and visitors in the garden marquee. “It is a pleasure to join you and it is entirely appropriate you should celebrate 40 years of pioneering activity…” said the Princess. This was her seventh visit - her first opened the Bath centre in 1987, after which she agreed to become the hospice’s royal visitor. Chief Executive John Davies explained “We are helping to transform the way palliative and end of life care is commissioned, viewed and delivered The royal visit helps us build awareness of the essential support and services we provide to 900 patients per day who are living with a life-limiting illness - the only adult hospice serving 700 sq miles and 550,000 people across Wiltshire and Somerset.” Their core philosophy has never waivered and the summer exhibition tour to 15 venues across Somerset and Wiltshire will also bring the issue of standards in palliative care to the attention of national and local political leaders alike. Watch their anniversary film check exhibition tour dates & fundraising events in your area www.dorothyhouse.org.uk and in its Dorset Hospice. Last year its nurses and carers gave more than 28,000 hours of support and respite to families, enabling them to better cope with the pressure of caring round the clock for a very sick child. People across Wiltshire are being encouraged to hold tea parties and bake cakes at home, at work or in the community to help fund a precious resource - a Julia’s House nurse or carer.

SLICE OF LIFE

slice of LIFE Comings and goings in Bradford on Avon...

T

he re-enactment skirmish on the bridge may be over but traffic v pedestrians endures. Help is at hand. There are whispers that plans for a more appropriate pedestrian bridge design are afoot. Sadly, the hugely successful Silver Street Custom Tattoos has left a gaping empty shop at the end of the bridge. Following a rent hike, efforts to rent alternative premises in the town were spurned. Queues of eager customers hailing from far and wide are now on their way to a premises in Frome. Bradfordian males will be delighted to hear that a new barber has filled an empty space on Weaver’s Walk. Neil Parson’s ‘The little Barber Shop’ is a welcome addition to the hairdressing scene. There’s some hope for the empty space opposite Made in Bradford. Planning permission has been sought for a retail shop + coffee concession downstairs and six apartments upstairs. Fingers crossed it’s a solid project as it’s been unoccupied for a decade! Meanwhile the planners have wisely turned down the erection of 4 houses next to the taxi rank office at the railway station. Why must we build on every available square metre anyway? Money

isn’t everything, or is it? For there’s no news of the Beautiful Bradford-Perfect Setting branding project. We were going to light up the bridge and lock up, initiate a poster campaign, and make efforts to capitalise on ‘Brideford on Avon’. Waiting for the Photo competition results perchance? Talking of perfect, Perfect Day wedding dresses are moving in with their parent company, Flossy and Willow, making way for affordable upmarket day wear. That’s handy as the lovely linens that graced the old Post Office have departed. The Co-op and Post Office are due to open September 1. And a brand new post office is opening thanks to Central Convenience Stores who’ve taken over the Trowbridge Road Petrol Station and their Staverton branch is always a hive of activity. As for hives, I hear that bees may turn out to have regional accents! Whether Bzzz, Burzzz, or Baahrzzz, their drop in numbers is cause for global concern. Seemingly we have to “to maintain strict limits on the movement of colonies, including mandatory health screenings as they cross borders.” Brexit for Bees then. No50 August/September 2016

Which brings us to politics! Busy Bee Theresa May was picked to stand as Tory Candidate for Maidenhead back in 1997. Among the 300 applicants was David Cameron “…he didn’t make the shortlist.” Might you stand for office? Are you able, fit, and keen to improve the town, possess common sense, endless patience, and a great sense of humour? Why not stand for the BoA Town Council next May? You’ll also need guts, vigour and vision to drive the town forward, and a thick skin to withstand passing brickbats. Michelle Donelan MP has been under attack from both man and beast. She first suffered a police investigation for possible misrepresentation of expenses during the 2015 election but the Battle Bus that caused the brouhaha didn’t even visit Chippenham! But her luck was in when a constituent happened to bring up the issue of ticks and Lyme’s disease and the symptoms sounded familiar. “If you don’t get it really early it can damage your nerves and eventually lead to death,” said Michelle. Serendipity, or Guardian Angel, the woman’s been spared a serious illness. Camilla camilla@alocallife.co.uk 49
