Warminster & Borders Launch of Warminster Edition At The Helm, local journalist Clare Macnaughton

Dear Local Lifers, When André Balkham Jones launched ‘A Local Life’ in Bradford Avon in 2010 his ambition at that time was to create a genuinely independent, locally focussed, good quality magazine. Four years on and we are delighted that A Local Life Bradford on Avon is thriving, passionately supported by the local community and advertisers. With each issue, the aim is always to deliver an exciting issue jam-packed with news, events and articles that are relevant to you and your environs. It is this essence that distinguishes A Local Life from other local magazines. It is written specifically with the community it is working with, and supporting, in mind. The Warminster edition will continue this tradition of good quality locally relevant editorial. As an area Warminster is blessed with fabulous countryside, interesting attractions, great food 10

establishments and a strong, connected business community. We look forward to delving deeper into this fertile area and showcasing what’s on offer. I am so excited to be managing editor. Like many locals, I migrated here in 1980; my father was a railwayman and his job at Westbury Station brought us south from the North. I attended New Close Primary School and then Kingdown Comprehensive School, which I left with one O Level, eight GCSEs and three A Levels. At the age of 18 years old I left Warminster to travel the world. During this time I studied a Ba Hons in PR & Media studies from Exeter University, married an RAF Chinook pilot, had a son, was the PR Manager for British yachtsman Mike Golding in the solo around the world yacht race, Vendée Globe, the Communications Director of the solo circumnavigation yacht race the Velux 5 Oceans, had a daughter and then co-wrote the bestseller Immediate Response. I began blogging as A Modern Military Mother in 2010 and have written many articles and columns under this handle.

local community and unearthing the local treasures. Growing up in Warminster I took for granted the creative, cultural, historical, rural uniqueness that we are so lucky to experience around us. Even having travelled the world, I now realise there is so much I gleaned from my youth here that I am very excited about enriching my rapidly advancing middle age by reconnecting once again with the glorious town and the surrounding villages. If you have any feature ideas for our inaugural edition and beyond we would love to hear from you so please email us at: warminster@alocallife.co.uk I look forward to catching up soon, Kind regards, Clare Macnaughton

I returned home to Warminster in 2011. I love living once again in the majestic Kingdom of Wessex. Warminster lent me a fantastic childhood, filled with fresh air, freedom and adventure and I now want my own children to benefit from this superb offering. There is so much to discover and share literally on our doorstep and I am particularly looking forward to re-acquainting myself with the

COMMUNITY

Westwood Children’s Community Library Westwood with Iford primary school has launched a new scheme to operate a children’s community lending library from the school. The Bradford on Avon Area Board made a grant to enable the purchase of dedicated library software and hardware that will enable the school library to be opened up to the local community. Ian Rockey, head teacher of the school, said:

The Bradfordians present JANE EYRE at the Tithe Barn, 8th-12th July Join the award-winning Bradfordians for a new production of Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' as they stage a new, true-to-book adaptation of this classic gothic masterpiece. A wonderful story, atmospheric venue, a cast of 40 of the best local talent - and a picnic and glass of wine on the banks of the river Avon beforehand. Sounds like the recipe for a perfect summer’s evening!

“The children at the school are already really excited, and I hope we will be able to share that excitement with other children in the community, be they at other local schools, home educated or perhaps just staying with friends or grandparents locally.”

The production runs from Tuesday 8th July until Saturday 12th July, 7.30pm at the Tithe Barn, Bradford on Avon, BA15 1LF.

The school is inviting anyone to register their interest by sending an email to library@ westwoodwithiford.org. The school would also be delighted to hear from anyone who is able to donate children’s books to the library.

Tickets are £12 or £10 concessions. Available from The Wiltshire Music Centre www. wiltshiremusic.org.uk 01225 860100

Arts Festival 1st-20th September 2014 The Bradford on Avon Arts Festival showcases the abundant artistic talent that exists within our picturesque town. The annual festival provides the opportunity for residents, visitors and tourists to come together and appreciate the wealth of creative and cultural activities that can be found here. The festival aims to offer local talent the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity across a broad spectrum of artistic media from painting, sculpture and photography to the written word, video art and theatrical performance.

There will be a very special end of summer party on Saturday 13th September in and around Westbury Gardens called ‘Lighting Up the Town’, with a lantern procession through the town where each lantern will be in the form of a fish (or other river or sea creature). Fire eaters, a choir, food offerings and a bar, and MORE, will make it a celebration to remember! Starting in June, Kate Nottage and her team will be running workshops to enable individuals or groups to make lanterns from willow and paper. The workshops will be supported by YouTube videos to both instruct and inspire. Lantern making is a craft that is suitable for everyone: primary school children, families, businesses and community groups.

To hear more about how to join in and make a fish lantern for the Arts Festival this September contact Kate on 07967 634978 or email katenot9@gmail.com

From 1st - 20th September, the 2014 festival will be shining a light on the town’s artistic community. Poets, painters, photographers and performers will be responding to this year’s theme for the festival – LIGHT – culminating in the end of summer party on Saturday 13th September. Lady Margaret Hungerford Schoolroom and Almshouse The Lady Margaret Hungerford Schoolroom and Almshouses in Corsham were founded in 1668 to provide accommodation for “the elderly deserving poor” and to provide an education “for ten poor scholars”. The buildings incorporate the Master’s House, originally intended as spacious accommodation for Lady Margaret to impress her aristocratic friends. As well as encouraging individual visitors, we are keen to promote group visits too, which can be booked by contacting Marian King on 01249 713486. She can arrange tours by our Volunteer Guides lasting approximately 45 minutes. t’s exciting to see new businesses that are investing in the area with the hope that this has a knock on effect for the town. Bringing people and growth to the area can only be good. Earlier in the year Widbrook Grange was bought by a new owner, and they have recently also acquired the former Beef and Barge on the Trowbridge road in Bradford on Avon. Now renamed the boathouse, it is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment and is due to open to the public on the 6th June. Blessed with a wonderful setting, the boathouse will provide a relaxed and informal dining experience, in which general manager Christopher John will instill the same high standards in food and service that are making Widbrook Grange a go-to destination for fine dining. Executive chef Phil Carroll will share his passion for local produce, elevating classic British food with contemporary touches and unusual ingredients, whilst

remaining committed to providing good value, serving meals that don’t need a side dish to satisfy, or catch you out with those added costs. The extensive menu will cater for the shifting appetites of diners throughout the day, including a brunch spread, fresh bread and great coffee, through to a wide selection of lunch and dinner options, and many fresh takes on well-loved dishes.

Potted Ham Hock A recipe for potted ham hock with pickled asparagus and spring onions and toasted soda bread. Perfect for sitting in the summer sun with a large glass of something (cider obviously) . Ham hock was regularly on the menu when I was young, along with trotters and chitlins, the legacy of thrifty Scottish grandparents, usually boiled and served with whatever veg was available, but in summer it was with a warm broad bean salad and new potatoes from the garden. The project’s popular veg box scheme is back on track, bringing affordable, organically grown veg to the community.

new growers Adam and Dave have joined the team and the project has undergone serious transformation. Local volunteers have been working hard to put up a brand new polytunnel, bought using funding from the Big Lottery Local Food Grant, and there’s now a cosy cabin where volunteers can have a cup of a tea and a chat. Other additions include a new irrigation system and an eco-friendly compost loo.

There have been big changes at the site off Bath Road over the past few months:

Seasonal eating from Riverford

R

iverford delivers vegboxes, meat and other seasonal organic food to your door. Alan and Vicki Mowat have recently taken over Riverford locally. They sent us one of the vegboxes to try, together with a copy of the Riverford Farm cookbook. We caught up with them to find out more.

“We left our London office jobs to move to Limpley Stoke and take over the Riverford franchise for Bath & NE 34

Somerset nearly two years ago,” said Vicki. “We were looking for a better environment in which to raise our sons, who are now five and eight. We’d been Riverford customers for about five years in London, and we loved the convenience of having a weekly vegbox delivered free to our door, plus the fantastic flavour of Riverford’s organic, seasonal veg. As we looked into it more we were really impressed with the company’s credentials in giving farmers a fair deal, too.” “We’ve been covering the Bath & NE Somerset area for nearly two years now – and we’re now delighted to take on this part of West Wiltshire too,” said Alan. “It’s right on our doorstep, so we’re looking forward to getting to know our customers here! We offer a really local service. For example if there’s a particular type of veg someone isn’t keen on, we’ll swap it for something else.”

So how did we get on with the vegbox that Alan and Vicki sent us to try? With the help of their suggestions and the cook book for inspiration we felt encouraged to get creative, to cook with seasonal fresh produce as opposed to just shopping from supermarket offerings. Our box contained spring greens, wild garlic leaves, large portobello mushrooms, sweet peppers, aubergine, cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli. Genuinely fresh veg always tastes significantly better and and it needn’t cost any more. Riverford’s veg is consistently cheaper than the supermarket equivalents, and delivery is free.

Food&drink

The benefits of organic foods from studies show that they have more beneficial nutrients than conventionally grown vegetables. People with food, chemical or preservative allergies may see their symptoms improve or even disappear. Navigating your way through which foods are healthier can be confusing but Riverford makes the choice easy.

From veg box to plate, our first meal of a piece of fish with steamed purple sprouting broccoli immediately proved to us that the difference in taste and colour was obvious. Over the course of a week we tried a wild garlic pesto, spring greens with a little wild garlic combined with butchers sausages and stuffed peppers, made a sweet burnt pepper with onion and garlic bruschetta, had stuffed mushrooms and enjoyed naughty garlic, cheese and creamed

mushrooms on toast for breakfast. Our last meal of the week was a curry with the remaining veg, which were still incredibly fresh, something we don’t always experience with supermarket produce! Although the intention wasn’t to just have vegetarian dishes, we found ourselves encouraged to eat what has been proven to be a healthier diet, and felt all the better for it too!

Interested in trying a vegbox?

Alan & Vicki are offering Local Life readers a FREE copy of the Riverford Farm cookbook (by Guy Watson, BBC Farmer of the Year 2012, and Jane Baxter) on your second delivery when you set up a regular order. Vegboxes start at just £10.35. Go to www.riverford.co.uk or call 01225 722387 and quote the promotion code “A LOCAL LIFE”.

Local travel agent receives prestigious Queen’s Award for International growth

W

estbury based travel agent Michael Eaves, who runs his own home-based travel business as part of leading independent travel company Travel Counsellors, is celebrating after the company was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the UK’s highest accolade for business success, in recognition of the company’s continued growth and overseas expansion. The independent travel company, which has one of the highest scores in the world for client loyalty, received the award for International Trade having successfully brought its business model, which focuses on providing clients with the highest levels of personal service, to overseas markets in Ireland, the Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Dubai and, most recently, expanding into Belgium earlier this year. The company, which now has 800 travel counsellors across the UK and a further 500 overseas, has experienced a growth of 120% since its first overseas launch in Ireland nine years ago. Since joining the company in 2009 Michael has seen his travel business go from strength to strength. He comments: “I am thrilled the company has received this fantastic accolade. Our international expansion hugely benefits me and my clients as I have access to exclusive products and can draw on 38

the local knowledge and support of fellow Travel Counsellors in eight countries across the globe, offering my clients a unique level of personal insight into travel destinations worldwide. Plus I have 24/7 support from our global offices, so my clients know I am always available to help them should they need it.” The award also follows Travel Counsellors being the first, and so far the only, UK travel agency to receive the Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2003, which recognised the company’s pioneering concept of enabling professionals such as Michael to work from home whilst supporting them from the company’s central head office in the UK, which now has over 200 staff, with a further 60-plus in its overseas offices. Travel Counsellors continued success has also recently been recognised when the company was listed in the 2014 Sunday Times Profit Track earlier this month. COMMUNITY NEWS

Dorothy House Midnight Walk supports ‘home from home’

W

omen from across Wiltshire are already signing up for the Bath Midnight Walk 2014, which this year is raising money for an innovative ‘home from home’ project: the community lodges recently opened in the beautiful grounds of the hospice at Winsley.

The purposebuilt lodges allow patients, their families and carers to stay together in a private setting, cared for by the Hospice at Home team and trained volunteers. They provide a safe, comfortable and peaceful alternative for people who for some reason cannot be cared for in their own home, but who want to remain in a family setting. They will cost about £150,000 a year to run, so that’s the fundraising target for this year’s women-only walk – on Saturday 13 September, starting on the stroke of midnight at the SouthGate centre in Bath. To register, download an entry form at www.bathmidnightwalk.co.uk, pick up details at any Dorothy House shop, or call fundraising on 01225 721480.

CLIMATE FRIENDLY BRADFORD ON AVON NEWS Electric Cars are Go! Would you like to drive without using petrol or diesel? When replacing your car, think about an electric version instead. Most manufacturers are selling electric versions of their most popular models, and the Government is investing £500m in this sector to promote electric vehicles. They recognise that the move towards electric cars is essential if we are to cut our carbon emissions and improve air quality. There are many unfounded myths about electric cars but also several websites explaining the issues. The big fundraising event is Chris Giles’ “Auction of Promises” on Saturday 27th June, in St Margaret’s Hall. hen Fetch Pet Shop opened seven years ago, owner and general manager Ruth Warren never envisaged spending so much of her time discussing dog poo, but with media attention focussing on the state of our dogs’ dinner it has become a very hot topic, with many of the nations favourite brands uncomfortable in the spotlight. It’s easy to be seduced by the packaging but many popular dog foods are packed full of cheap ingredients that can cause health problems in our dogs.

vegetables), combined with the absence of the animal derivatives, meat meals, cereals, colouring, salt, sugars and preservatives commonly found in cheap pet foods make this food her first choice for dogs with skin, tummy or behavioural problems. Natashya would expect to see a change in as little as two weeks, simply by changing a dog’s diet. Many of us consider a premium food to be beyond our budget, but look more closely and you will find buying cheap, poor quality food is a false economy. Bakers Complete costs £27.75 for a 14kg bag and they advise feeding a 10kg dog 200g a day; that works out at 40p per day. Now look at that seemingly expensive bag of Natural Dog Food, which costs £54.95 for 15kg: because of the quality of the ingredients and the absence of cheap fillers, you feed a 10kg dog 100g so it works out at 36p per day. Meaning that meal for meal the best dog food we can find is cheaper than Bakers Complete. Of course, you don’t have to buy 15kg. The Natural Dog Food also comes in a 2kg or a 7.5kg bag priced at £8.95 and £29.95. If you want to find out more about the Natural Dog Food or would like to try a free sample just call in at Fetch Pet Shop and staff will be only too happy to discuss, amongst other things, the state of your dog’s bowels! 10 The Shambles, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, BA15 1JS. BOOK REVIEW

Cold Blood: Adventures with Reptiles and Amphibians

by Richard Kerridge (Chatto & Windus, 2014) The approaches made in this book towards the secretive, wild creatures (lizards, snakes, newts, frogs, toads) cannot be described as coldblooded: this book turns out – and it is one of its finest qualities – to examine some extremes of human emotion (most notably, our fears), using a beguiling variety of voices; casual, scientific, anecdotal. It is, absolutely, a book for non-specialists: it will surprise you with its range of knowledge, about current ecological concerns (species extinctions) and, indeed, about family life too. Look closely at the exquisite detail in the creature suspended on the book’s front cover! As with Kerridge’s prose, you find yourself taken more deeply inside the whole business – the fascinations of the wild. This newt’s criss-cross of hair-like blood vessels conjures up ideas about the complexity of its delicate, skin-breathing spirit: it also suggests how vulnerable the translucent creature may be, even as it shimmers pure gold on its tummy. The chapter on toads tells quite a different story. Here, the imagery isn’t quite so obviously magical: “It makes sense to see them as distillations of earthy environments, for in those environments their colours have evolved. Like soil, they soften and swell in the rain and tighten and go dusty and drab in dry

weather.” Kerridge (like Philip Larkin) has noticed that there is poetry in Mr Toad. His little digressions on the literary treatments of toads by the likes of the washerwoman in Wind in the Willows (suddenly seeing him as a “horrid, nasty, crawly toad in my nice clean barge!”) can be wonderfully amusing. One of the crisscrossing threads of discussion, about the stern rules of education which Kerridge picked up in angry battles with his schoolteacher father, is about the need to acknowledge fears: for our own weakness – and our need to find out the fears of our rivals. Suddenly, an imagery of warfare (learned both from reading boys’ comics as well as from his father’s experience, when he served in a tank regiment in France) cuts across the talk about survival rates of animals in the wild. And so – through particular detail – we are given more than a picture: we see something of the inside of the writer’s own drama; these wild animals are, for him, the real thing. Fortunately, this well-researched book has a way of keeping its knowledge in touch with the voices of boyhood and family – it is a book about an individual’s need to escape the limits of civilisation – often by finding pockets of wildness within the confines of London suburbia in the 1960s. Leading, as he does, the MA course in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, Richard Kerridge teaches us that we may acknowledge, in these fragile survivors, some of our own most elusive thoughts about modern life, and our hopes to retain hold of an individual “self’ within it. Revealing the magic of their presence, he tells a story of human presence, and its mixed consequences for the environment we try to protect, but – too often – share so clumsily. Colin Edwards

Daughter’s friend is a bad influence My daughter, 6, has a very controlling ‘best friend’ at school, a boy who I’m really not keen on. Not only does he boss her about and get her to do things she wouldn’t normally do, he stops other children playing with her. I’ve also noticed her behaviour deteriorating at home. What shall I do? B White, BoA

Answer While you can’t control who your daughter plays with at school, it seems obvious this boy is stopping her forming other friendships. My first step would be to talk to her teacher and explain the situation. Secondly I would try to encourage play dates with other children outside school. Other that that, keep demonstrating the kind of behaviour you do want at home, and hopefully she will mirror this. Good luck.

I can’t find a job My youngest child has just started school, and for the first time I find myself in the position where I could work part time (ideally around school hours). I have applied for so many jobs and been rejected from every single one. I am finding the whole process quite soul destroying. What can I try next? P Taylor, Melksham

strangers are constantly wanting to touch it. I know it’s well meant, but I’m finding it quite annoying and intrusive. Any advice? B Wallace, Rode

Answer Congratulations on your pregnancy; such an exciting time. Your dilemma is a tricky one, as the attention is well intended, but I have a few suggestions. When people approach you, you could say, “Sorry, personal space!” in a light-hearted way, or “Sorry, would you mind not doing that?”. Failing that, apparently there are t-shirts for sale that say “Don’t touch my bump!” or similar.

Train annoyance Whilst travelling home on the train today in the Quiet Carriage (which I had chosen deliberately), I was faced by a business man talking loudly into his mobile phone. It infuriated me. I just ignored him and hoped he’d stop. He didn’t. What should I have done? P Bright, BoA

Answer Don’t give up! There is something out there for you, it’s just that unfortunately what you’re looking for is in high demand. Keep plugging away and apply for anything that seems suitable. Consider volunteering for a while (it looks good on your CV), and mention it to your friends as in my experience word of mouth is a valuable resource. Good luck!

Don’t touch my bump! I am eight months’ pregnant and very much enjoying my pregnancy. My bump has now increased to quite an impressive size and I’m finding that

How annoying. You were completely within your rights to say, politely “I think you might be in the wrong carriage. This is a quiet one.” Or, less politely, “Would you mind shutting up? The rest of the carriage aren’t really interested in your business.” Or you could just mention it to the next passing guard; it’s certainly not worth getting punched over.
