welcome Welcome to our October/November edition, as the leaves begin to fall and the nights start to draw in, with the clocks going back on the 26th of October. In this issue we have a great selection of features, including the launch of a new book by local children’s author Ruth Walton, a moving account of the benefits of live-in care for those living with dementia, and a delectable pudding recipe to start your preparations for Christmas. BoA is glad to have fewer empty shops, with Holidays & Cruises For You and Barbershop by Ajh joining the ranks of businesses in the town. Meanwhile, as the youngsters don their uniforms and troop back to their classrooms, we look at a couple of local schools in the area. Our community pages feature a commemoration of the First World War for Bradford and our twinned towns, a look at composting, and the sad news of the passing of local broadcaster Jonathan Hewat. October also sees the launch of new editions of A Local Life in Malmesbury and Warminster, where Fiona and Clare are bringing the same local coverage to their respective towns. In our next issue, we will visit their fledgling ventures to bring you the best of what’s happening in the wider Wiltshire area, as well as getting geared up for the festive season with a bonanza of ideas for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Until then, we wish you a thrilling Hallowe’en, a fantastic Bonfire Night, and many delightful autumn days. A Local Life all

Bradford on Avon Rotary Club Continue to Help Dorothy House The entrance area to Dorothy House has been re-designed to make it even more welcoming to visitors. BoA Rotary Club members, under the guidance of Bob Coulthard, have worked hard on these improvements. Seen here are Bob Coulthard, Julian Long and Club President Geoff Eynon, mucking in! Over the years the Club has provided help including creating and laying the original paths and planting the woodlands with over 200 trees and 250 shrubs, transforming the once decaying scrubland. All that work has now resulted in a lovely setting for all those attending or visiting Dorothy House. The Club are also pleased to have provided patio tables and chairs for the two family lodges that have recently been built. www.boa.rotary1200.org No39 October/November 2014

n 1st September, family business Holidays & Cruises for You celebrated the opening of their new shop at Canterbury House, 10 Silver Street, Bradford on Avon. The shop is the company’s first foray on to the high street. The company started out five years ago in offices in Westbury, Wiltshire, specialising in group tours and cruising for closed user groups. Following expansion, they moved on to a larger barn premises at Paxcroft Farm, Hilperton. “Over time, in addition to our existing group business, our customer base increased as we found we were approached to organise private holidays, with more and more clients wanting to visit us, so it became a natural progression to open a shop,” explained director Sherina Hale. “The challenge has been to find suitable premises to maintain our successful group business and at the same time be sufficiently well located to attract local people looking for a holiday. We are absolutely delighted to have

opened on Silver Street amongst other thriving businesses, and everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.” The shop features a Travel Lounge with sofas for customers to sit and relax with a coffee whilst reviewing brochures and holiday choices, a feature that sets the business apart from the rest. Holidays are a considered purchase and the aim is to make customers feel relaxed about enquiring and enjoy a friendly consultation and booking service. As Freedom members – part of the Cooperative Travel Group – Holidays & Cruises for You are ABTA and ATOL license holders, ensuring all holidays are bonded and customer monies are fully protected. They offer a wide range of holidays to suit all budgets, from solo holidays, mainstream packages and weekend breaks to niche requirements for special interests and tailor-made weddings and honeymoons. They can also apply group benefits where applicable for groups of friends and families travelling together.

Local artist releases new album Rosie Upton’s new album Basket of Oysters, recorded at WildGoose Studios on the Village Pump label, is due for release at the end of October. A concert launch is being held at St Margaret’s Hall in Bradford on Avon on the evening of 29th October and will feature Rosie and some of the musicians who appear on the album. These include Pete MacGregor and Andrew Bazeley on guitars, Stask Huchrak on double bass and Lindsey Huchrack and Bryony McGinty on backing vocals. Rosie intended to record an album back in the early 1980s but family, career and her trade union activities intervened. She is just as interested in conserving old folk songs as historic buildings, and the new album, of mainly traditional folk with a couple of blues songs, includes songs she learnt from her grandmother. The album can be purchased on the night or from Made in Bradford on Avon after the launch date.

COMMUNITY
World War One Commemoration Bradford on Avon’s WW1 commemoration was unique because the Town Council invited our three twin towns to take part; namely Elblag in Poland, Norden in Germany, and Sully-sur-Loire in France. Vicky Ody represented the German twinning and spoke the words being said at a parallel ceremony in Norden itself. Michael Sutton, chairman of the Polish twinning, spoke movingly of Elblag’s complicated history: it was part of Germany in 1914-18, with Poland not existing as a nation at that time. Vivienne Kynaston, chairwoman of the French twinning, said that of the men who left the small town of Sully-sur-Loire for the battlefields, 122 never returned. Rev Joanna Abecassis, leading the commemoration, said: “Looking back a hundred years to 1914, historians see that the underlying cause of the war was a lack of sufficient commitment to peace in all the powerful nations of Europe.”
Our Lives, Our History Wiltshire People 1st is a user-led self-advocacy organisation, based in the Independent Living Centre, St George’s Roa, Semington. They work to promote the rights and inclusion of people with a learning disability and/or autism, and to give them a voice in the local community. Angie Carmichael, the Director of Wiltshire People 1st, is now asking for readers to help them with their Heritage Lottery-funded project, called Our Lives, Our History. Its aim is to explore and record the hidden history of people with learning difficulties, their families, carers and others, over the last 100 years, focusing on West Wiltshire. They want people to hear about what they are doing and to get involved, by sharing your stories or by offering your services as volunteers. For more information, or to get involved, please email Angie: angie@wiltshirepeople1st.org.uk or call 01380 871900. www.wiltshirepeoplefirst.org
Welcome to our new neighbours! We have new neighbours – the occupiers of the new attractive looking town houses in Kennet Gardens. We wonder what they make of us! “We” are the Bradford on Avon 1995 Air Cadets Squadron. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, at 7pm, our new neighbours may have noticed up to 20 secondary school-aged people – girls and boys – going into our building. Do our neighbours wonder what they get up to? Well, the cadets could be practicing map reading skills or first aid, or studying for the BTEC in Aviation Studies. Sometimes they go up to the field to practice radio communication skills or camouflage and concealment techniques. At weekends they could be off to one of the local RAF airfields to get some gliding or flying experience with ex-RAF pilots. For any information on joining as an air cadet or as an adult volunteer, please contact the squadron on 01225 863307 or email on 1995@aircadets.org. 14

EDUCATION FEATURE had been founded in 1874 by the nuns of the St. Denys Retreat. The Senior School’s majestic buildings lie in grounds which face open country. The Preparatory School is on a neighbouring site and has long-established links with the town, enjoying strong support.
Man with a Mission –
Mark Mortimer, Headmaster, Warminster School
In January 2014 Mark Mortimer assumed the role of Headmaster at Warminster School, the locally situated, independent boarding and day school. A former army officer and Atlantic rower with an MBA in business management, he brings to Warminster a combination of inspirational teaching experience, leadership and endurance. The School comprises the Prep School for pupils aged 3 to 11 and the Senior School for students aged 11 to 18. Founded in 1707, it was originally the Lord Weymouth Grammar School, a free school set up by Viscount Weymouth, Thomas Thynne, to educate the workers on the Longleat Estate. In 1973 the school merged with St. Monica’s girls’ school, which
According to Mark Mortimer, “Good exam results offer opportunity, but education is more than results and an all-round, values-based approach is vital.” He asks parents, “What sort of person do you want your child to be when they leave here for the final time?” “Financially independent and living somewhere else?” I suggest. He laughs, and explains that, in his eyes, emotional intelligence, optimism and resilience are important life skills and this is what he aims to encourage in his pupils. He is a firm believer that a school has a responsibility, particularly in this day and age, to prepare pupils for life beyond university. In the short term he is looking to build relationships with the community and local schools and also looking at collaborative teaching, but it is only the beginning of his plans for the school. With a new, inspiring Headmaster, there are exciting times ahead for Warminster School, staff and pupils alike.

Since Rowena Quantrill’s item about swifts in the May issue of A Local Life, I’m glad to report that our group has generated considerable interest, and happily the BoA swift population seems to be doing well this summer. One of our group was thrilled to watch a party of over 50 spiralling high above the Woolley part of the town. In June, Edward Mayer, a respected authority on swifts and driving force behind swift conservation, gave a most interesting and informative talk at the Climate Friendly Bradford monthly meeting, which reinforced our enthusiasm to continue our activities. We are now in touch with groups in other parts of England and we are planning another libaray display to include results of our survey of nest locations.
Anyone in the area who was aware of nest sites this summer or who may be interested in our activities, please email climatechampions@gmail.com

Sad farewell to local broadcaster Broadcaster and author Jonathan Hewat has died, following a fall at his home in Bradford on Avon, aged 75. Born in Dublin, Jonathan began his career in London, after completing the National Diploma in Design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He was married twice with a son, Darragh from his first marriage and two adopted daughters Laura and Kate from his second marriage to Theresa, whom he met through his work in graphic design. After their marriage they undertook an overland journey in a Volkswagen camper van which lasted four years – and took them 153,000 kilometres through 56 countries, earning them a place in the Guinness Book of Records. In 1979 he began his broadcasting career on local radio before moving on to British Forces Radio and BBC Radio 2 and 4. He was the first to make a programme of “bloopers”, showing mistakes and gaffes by broadcasters, a forerunner of television programme “It’ll Be Alright On The Night”. Later, he worked as Head of Radio at the University of the West of England in Bristol, before becoming Associate Tutor at Ashridge Management College and running Media Management and team building courses through his business 46 Design. A devoted father and husband, he supported his wife Theresa through a long battle with lung disease before her death in 2009. Enjoying retirement, and devoted to writing and travelling, he was proud of his beautiful garden in Wine Street, opening it up to the public once a year. He will be sadly missed. Heading to a new site – the old nursery on Marsh Road in Hilperton – they are keen to welcome customers old and new to their new home. Customers can now access the garden centre without having to negotiate a pot-holed driveway with added speed bumps. James and Matthew set up Avonfield in 2008, offering the very best quality plants and excellent levels of service, and garden lovers have returned there again and again. James is keen to point out, “We have always believed that to look after our customers we have to make sure our core products are

ounded by Sarah Julyan, Different by Design began as a landscape garden design and build family firm in 2004. Their client base developed by word of mouth and on the back of winning some competitions and awards for their designs. They added the design and manufacture of timber buildings to their portfolio, and this in turn led on to work for schools and play areas, creating innovative resources such as bespoke play equipment and playground environments including safer surfaces. They ensure customers can be confident in their work by working to all current British Standards. In addition, they hold the industry recommended levels of public liability insurance. All their work is fully guaranteed. With thier new office now open in Bradford on Avon, they are able to welcome you to come in
and talk to them in person. They can show you examples of work they have done that will help you develop the concept of your project. They can also show you sample materials and large scale drawings. And they can provide a very good cup of coffee too! Customers say they love the fact they can leave the whole project to the company – from conception to completion, including all the planning applications and processes.

Choosing the Right Bed
W
hen it comes to choosing a bed, people can be left confused by the types of mattress available and the benefits they provide. Richard Hayes of TR Hayes furniture store in Bath looks at different types available to help ensure we all get a good night’s sleep. Open Coil mattresses featuring linked springs are perhaps the most traditional type. As the springs are linked, the movement of one person may be felt by the other. As a result, open coil mattresses are generally used for spare rooms and children’s beds. Pocketed Sprung mattresses are a traditional mattress that features individual springs that mould to your body, meaning a partner’s movements will not be felt. The number of springs and quantity/ quality of filling have a bearing, and natural fillings such as lamb’s wool and hair tend to mould better with the springs, retain their shape and provide more comfort. 24
Developed by NASA, Memory Foam mattresses are very supportive and are made of a visco-elastic that varies in thickness and degree of elasticity. The thickness affects quality and a higher grade visco-elastic gives more support. Memory foam mattresses do not need to be turned and are hypo-allergenic.
Mammoth mattresses are a new product made from medical foam and are scientifically proven to enhance sleep. The company partners with the Chiropractic Patients Association, so they are great for all ailments as well as giving you the best night’s sleep.
For information about Mammoth or other mattresses please see the TR Hayes website www. Memory Foam on Pocketed trhayes.co.uk or visit the TR Hayes Springs is a hybrid mattress that combines the support of memory showrooms at 15-18 London Street, Walcot, Bath. Local delivery foam with the traditional feel of pocketed springs. These mattresses is free and there is a customer car feature over 1000 springs and are park at the side of the store. topped with memory foam. Latex on Pocketed Springs is another hybrid combining latex with pocketed springs. The main benefit is the coolness provided by the latex as well as the firmness and resilience that it provides.

Stairs driving you around the bend? On average we go up and down stairs over 200,000 times in our lifetime. For most of us, these things only take a minute. But many people find it incredibly difficult. That’s why stairlifts were invented: to make life easier. The earliest record of a stairlift dates back to the 1500s, when King Henry IIIV invented his very own “Stairthrone”. Stairlifts were widely introduced in the UK in the 1970s and since then have made climbing the stairs simpler and safer for millions of people. Stairlift design has changed over the years to be more sleek and elegant, in a choice of colours to blend into the home. They fit to the stairs and not the wall so you won’t need to redecorate, and they can be on your stairs in around as little as 3 hours. 1st Choice Stairlifts, based in Wiltshire, are experts when it comes to having a Stairlift fitted. The company offers many different models from most manufacturers to make sure that you get the best

stairlift for your stairs and your needs. Stairlifts can fit on any staircase, whether indoors or outdoors, a straight flight or curved stairs, even spiral stairs too. Rental stairlifts are also an option for a short term solution, or even to help a relative who is staying over the festive period! 1st Choice can also can repair and service your stairlift, irrespective of who fitted it originally, to make sure it is working and in tip-top condition. If you know someone whose stairs are driving them around the bend, 1st Choice Stairlifts can help. Call now to avoid the pre-christmas rush (honestly!) on 08000 19 22 10, or visit www.1stchoicestairlifts.com. 1st Choice Stairlifts are members of the British Healthcare Trades Association and adhere to their Code of Practice which is approved by the Trading Standards Institute and protects consumers when purchasing mobility products.

Look forward to a comfortable, warm and secure winter Autumn is a lovely season; there's something magical about the crisp, clear days, the first smell of woodsmoke, and leaves beginning to turn golden brown. But it is also a reminder that winter is approaching, and so it is also the time when many people begin to research care options for themselves or an elderly loved-one. So for anyone concerned about their own wellbeing or that of a family member or friend, we invite you to get in touch with us at this time. Our award-winning homes are a refreshing alternative to what many people think of when considering a care home: lovely surroundings, excellent menu, and a programme of activity, entertainment and hobbies that is acknowledged as industryleading. But most importantly, we believe our care is second to none. Don’t wait for the nights to draw in and the cold to take hold. Call us today and give yourself the time you need to plan for a pleasant winter, whatever the weather brings.

Polly Basset’s Christmas pudding The chefs at The Boathouse and Widbrook Grange are preparing the Christmas puddings at the moment, ready for our Christmas party menus. We use this recipe because the pudding has a lovely traditional flavour, it ages well and it absorbs the alcohol nicely. It can also be used as a last minute recipe if required, but there will not be the depth of flavour you get from the aged pudding. This recipe requires a 3½ pint pudding basin and a saucepan that is big enough, with a lid.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
225g currants 225g sultanas 225g raisins 225g muscavado sugar 100g beef (or vegetable) suet 100g fresh breadcrumbs 100g ground almonds 100g chopped blanched almonds 100g mixed candied peel 175g of cooking apple, peeled and finely chopped 225g plain flour Grated rind of one lemon Grated rind of one orange 30ml lemon juice 75ml stout 4 eggs, beaten 15g mixed spice 1.25ml grated nutmeg 1.25ml ground cinnamon Pinch of salt 30ml brandy
Grease and line the pudding basin. Mix all the ingredients together and pour into the basin. Seal this well, first with baking parchment then with foil. Remember to leave a cleat in the top for expansion. Place the pudding on a trivet in the pan and add enough water to come two thirds of the way up the basin. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 8 hours, adding more boiling water as necessary. When finished, carefully remove from the pan and leave to cool. We then wrap in brandy soaked muslin, baking parchment and foil again, and store in cool dry place. It can then be fed alcohol as required. To reheat and serve, simply steam for three hours, flambé and serve.

Food&drink Food for Thought Did you realise that up to 50% of stuff thrown in wheelie bins each week could be composted? A lot of this, of course, is food waste, but cardboard packets and tubes, cotton wool, the contents of vacuum cleaning bags, tissues, and the bedding of vegetable-eating pets can all be composted too.
www.greatgreensystems.co.uk for details on how to buy greatly reduced Green Cones or Green Johannas. The <lovefoodhatewaste> website also has really practical help for reducing waste. www.climatefriendlybradfordonavon.co.uk.
If more people composted regularly it would have huge benefits for the environment. Not only would there be less demand on the rapidly diminishing and expensive landfill sites, there would be fewer emissions from the journeys to these sites. Organic waste, which produces a valuable soil improver for your garden when composted, gives off harmful methane when buried with general rubbish. And why pay for compost for your garden when you can make your own for nothing? If you would like more information on composting, contact Emma Croft, Waste Minimisation Officer at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust on 01380 736077, or go to

Making it easier to find Local Food & Drink, A LOCAL LARDER: Bradford on Avon & Beyond returns in 2015
Following the success of A Local Larder 2014 we propose to bring local buyers and producers together again on Monday 16th March, 2015, in St. Margaret’s Hall. Local producers will be invited to showcase their goods, talk to trade customers and tell their story. Networking with other exhibitors proved popular at the last event, as did the seminars, which will feature again. Buyers from a range of food outlets will be encouraged to come and sample goods and meet the producers, even those they are already using. One buyer last year said “I already use some of the businesses but it was great meeting the producers, who are not the people I usually deal with”. Local people will be able to come along in the early evening – to meet outlets and producers, to taste and to buy. We need your help: please support our crowdfunding campaign by making your pledge online between 6th October and 17th November at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/a-local-larder. All pledges will receive a reward. For further details please contact sue@boafood.co.uk 07791 798423 or go to www.boafood.co.uk.

B
radford on Avon based children’s author Ruth Walton visited the Windward Islands to research her latest book, Juliana’s Bananas, and to see how Fairtrade helps farmers in the region. The trip was hosted by the Windward Islands Farmers Association (WINFA) and Ruth travelled with another local, activist Liz Parker, who is chair of the European Banana Action Network. On the trip, Ruth and Liz visited the islands of St Vincent, Dominica and St Lucia and met with banana farmers, as well as seeing many projects that have been funded by Fairtrade Social Premium money. The Windward Islands economy is dependant on
banana industry. Windward Island bananas received the second and third highest scores in the most recent Ethical Consumer report on the fruit. Fairtrade Social Premium money funds many community resources across the islands, including school equipment, bus shelters, sports facilities and health centres, as well as providing support for farmers to help them recover from natural disasters such as the hurricanes that regularly occur in the region. Ruth’s research trip was funded by a grant from the K. Blundell Trust, which helps young published authors with research costs for books that help raise awareness of social and economic issues. Ruth documented her adventure with photographs, many of which have been used in the brightly coloured collaged illustrations in the finished book.

Sadly, following the removal of trade restrictions in 1992, the banana industry has suffered greatly as the small family farms in the area struggle to compete with ‘dollar bananas’ grown on large plantations in Central and South America. In St Vincent, Ruth and Liz were lucky to meet up with Renwick Rose from WINFA (winner of the Guardian International Development Achievement Award 2011), who helped them make the most of the visit. Mr Rose was instrumental in creating links between banana farmers and the Fairtrade Foundation. This union has helped raise the profile and economic viability of the island’s 36

The book is also packed with facts about bananas, how they grow, and even features some tasty recipes. Living an engaged life with dementia
M
ore and more people are living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Blue Sky Enabling’s case histories show that those who are supported to continue living in their own homes, with their own dedicated team of enablers, are able to live full and engaged lives despite their diminishing mental capacity.
Jacky’s story (By kind permission of her next of kin)
Jacky particularly liked this photograph; she said “It reminds me of a Monet painting”. It was taken on one of her trips to Kilver Court Gardens with one of her live-in enablers. Two years before this picture was taken, Jacky was diagnosed with a form of dementia that significantly affected her communication and her ability to function independently. What is wonderful about her comment is that it represents one of those brilliant moments of clarity that Jacky experienced when she was enabled to do something she loved and that she could relate to how she saw herself; Jacky used to be an artist.
blanker and blanker. I had no idea where my future was going. Blue Sky Enabling hoisted me out of the muddle. I have a sense of relief every time small tasks are completed. I feel able to express my opinions. I decide the when’s, where’s and how’s – my enablers respect my views and wishes, and then enable me to reach my goals. I feel clearer about the future than I did before; I know I want to stay around for it now.”
Soon after she was diagnosed with dementia, Jacky explained how she felt: “My mind got 40

HEALTH & FITNESS As Jacky’s dementia progressed, her live-in support helped her increasingly with personal care, preparing meals, maintaining her home, and making appointments with medical professionals, and provided companionship so she remained safe and well. But this is only part of the picture. Every weekend her family would come over with one of her favourite meals and they were there every birthday, Christmas and Easter to ensure that Jacky had a traditional celebration at home. Her dedicated team of live-in enablers helped Jacky to maintain contact with her friends and neighbours, and she enjoyed handing out sweets to the local children when they came knocking on her door in their fancy dress outfits – all things that would have been impossible if she had gone into a nursing home. Most importantly, Jacky’s qualified enablers understood Jacky’s frustrations with her condition and were able to
calmly help her overcome any challenging behaviour. They ensured there was always the time to engage with her in activities that meant something to her, such as talking with her about her photographs and books, sorting her drawings and participating in creative projects. She loved going out for walks, collecting leaves or cones and eating ice-cream by the canal – and upon returning home would find her pictures of the old barges from her youth, or would place her treasured finds in a bowl on her window sill. Jacky loved to browse in charity shops, to go to a café and have a hot chocolate and a cake, or to visit an exhibition where she maintained her sense of fun, dressing-up in the clothes of a pioneer at the American Museum! All of these things make up an engaged life and, most importantly, helped to maintain Jacky’s mental and physical health.
This last picture of Jacky was taken a few weeks before she passed quietly in her sleep following a brief illness. As her family say, “Jacky couldn’t have had a better life or been better taken care of. That’s all you can hope for isn’t it?” To find out how Blue Sky Enabling can support you or someone you love to live an engaged life in their own home, contact Shelley Saxon on 0844 225 1337 or look us up at www.blueskyenabling.org

Focus on Implants at The Dutch Barton Dental Practice The Dutch Barton Dental Practice is a private clinic located at 16 Church Street, Bradford on Avon. The Practice provides a wide range of preventative, restorative, surgical and cosmetic treatments for people of all ages – including implants. Many of our patients ask us for more information about implants. Some of the more frequently asked questions are shown below: What is a dental implant? An implant is a titanium screwshaped attachment that is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root portion of a missing natural tooth. It is screwed into a pre-drilled socket in the bone, and then acts to support a crown or bridge, or to secure a denture into place. What does the treatment process involve? Initially the patient will attend for an assessment to discuss the specific treatment options available, and then a written plan and cost estimate is provided. The surgical procedure to place the implant(s) is carried out under local anaesthetic to ensure no
discomfort; it is then allowed to heal for eight weeks. The crown, bridge or denture can then be fitted onto the implant(s). How many teeth can be replaced by implants? Dental implants can either replace a single missing tooth using implant-supported crowns, or multiple teeth using implantsupported bridges or dentures. Typically, implant-retained bridgework cannot be removed from the mouth, while dentures which are firmly anchored onto implants may be removed for cleaning.
oral hygiene and adequate bone quantity and quality. Some patients may have existing conditions that can adversely influence the success of any implant treatment, including smoking and periodontitis (gum disease). Why choose us? Principal dentist Simon Fieldhouse is a registered specialist Oral Surgeon with 12 years of experience in implant surgery, who has successfully placed over 1500 implants. We have an experienced team who will endeavour to make your visit and treatment as comfortable as possible. Until December 2014 we are offering a free Implant Consultation and Assessment.

Autumnal Rejuvenation Neem and Pumpkin Facial at Bowood Spa by Clare Macnaughton
As summer drew to a close, and with my skin showing the signs of prolonged sun exposure, I seized the opportunity to experience the special autumn facial offered by Bowood Spa. The promise was that the Sundari healing facial and scalp massage would rejuvenate my skin and the pumpkin would freshen it, leaving a healthy glow.
essences distilled from nature, blending modern science for immediate results with botanicals known through ancient wisdom. The products to be applied were extensive and, I was to discover later, smelled heavenly.
My beautician guided me to my aubergine-coloured, warmly lit treatment room, with ambient music playing in the background, Bowood Spa is a fantastic facility and began my treatment with set amid the grounds of the a gentle foot exfoliation and Bowood Hotel and golf course massage. The facial itself involved near Calne. The spacious spa has an infinity pool, gym, steam room, a bindi touch, three special jacuzzi, sauna and rainfall shower, inhalations of Vata facial oil, with well equipped clean changing multiple cleansings and tonic tonings, hot towels, tapping, rooms. Each locker contains slippers, a robe, a large towel and dabbing, exfoliation, massage, mask removal, tonic water a hand towel. spray, eye care and then a final On arrival I was given a moisturise. questionnaire to establish my skin type, so that my Dosha lunch could be tailored accordingly. I was a Vata, which meant that my skin was dry, and lunch was to be mackerel and ratatouille, nut salad, orange segments and mini pitta bread, all chosen to nourish my skin.
The highlight of the facial for me was the Apricot and Shea Hydra Soothing Mask, which smelt delicious, like exquisite cheesecake, but felt cool, light and gentle on my skin. At the end of the treatment I felt relaxed, renewed and glowing. My skin, which had sustained significant sun damage this summer, looked invigorated and refreshed. The limited edition seasonal Neem and Pumpkin facial is available at the Bowood Spa from the 1st September to the 30th November for £90 (rrp £155). Alternatively, you can relax in the spa for a day with a light lunch from only £40 per person. Ref: ALL01B www.bowood.org/spa 01249 823883

Camp worries
My ten year old daughter is soon to go away on a residential camp with school. I freely admit to being a slightly over-protective parent, and so far she has never had a night away from home. How can I prepare her? E Sexton, Trowbridge
Answer She’ll have a ball and it will do her no end of good, so you must put on a brave face and give the trip your blessing. Pack her bag together, so she knows where everything is, and be very matter of fact about it. I bet she’ll surprise you and take it all in her stride!
Water works I have always been an emotional type, but since I turned forty last year I find I am increasingly prone to tears. I don’t know if it’s my hormones, but in the last week I have cried three times. It’s so embarrassing, and I cannot seem to control it. Any tips on how to regain my composure? B Knowles, BoA
Answer Poor you, I can see that you’re in a very tricky situation here. I would suggest asking your son to visit you (with your grandson) on his own, thus giving your daughter-in-law a proper break. Ask him to suggest a time when a visit would be convenient – and offer to baby sit. I think patience and flexibility are the key here.
Bedtime capers I have two granddaughters whom I see regularly. I have them to stay overnight from time to time and, while I love them dearly, they behave terribly at bedtime, as they are used to staying up as long as they like and playing on their computers for all hours. How can I get them to go to bed happily (and calmly)? P Willows, Winsley
Answer
Answer I find the best thing to do is to look up to the sky very quickly and to take a few deep breaths. Alternatively, if you’re on your own and have a suitable moment, give in to the feeling and have a good cry – it can be very cleansing and therapeutic.
Daughter-in-law woes Last year my daughter-in-law gave birth to my first (and only) grandchild. They rarely visit me and I feel I am missing out on seeing my grandson grow up. I try to suggest visiting them, but quite frequently my visits are turned down as they are deemed not to be ‘convenient’. How can I resolve things without creating a huge family argument?
Well, I would suggest a simple, quiet evening routine with no computers or gadgets in the hour leading up to bed. I’m not sure how old your grandchildren are, but would suggest a bath, bedtime story and a goodnight kiss. Be consistent and it will pay dividends, and hopefully peace will be restored. Good luck.
