As this year’s Christmas shopping season gets under way, we offer a rallying cry to shoppers to support local independent stores this year. The run-up to Christmas is a crucial time for traders, and we urge you to think of Bradford on Avon’s locally-run shops when looking for presents. Shopping locally helps to improve the local economy - research suggests a pound spent with a local business stays in the local economy for five more transactions whereas a pound spend with a national business operating locally stays in the local economy for just two transactions. e Fre

Emergency Volunteers Needed!
B
radford on Avon was badly affected during the winter of 2013 /14 by both river and surface water flooding. The steep streets and footpaths can also become treacherous during winter weather. Community Emergency Volunteers are an exciting initiative to improve the resilience of our community to natural and manmade emergencies. Combining the roles of Wiltshire Councils Snow and Flood Warden scheme along with other basic civil defence, the CEVs will become a valuable link between the emergency 1st and 2nd responders (e.g. Police, Fire, Ambulance) and the local community at times of greatest need. 12
CEVs are not a rescue service and have no executive powers over and above ordinary members of the public. Instead their aim is to raise awareness of emergency planning in the local community and be there to provide additional ‘Boots on the Ground’ to free up the professionals to do what they do best during emergency events. To this end BoA TC in partnership with Wiltshire Council and other agencies are committed to providing a basic level of support, training and equipment to allow the CEVs to undertake these roles. If you are interested in becoming a CEV or to find out more please visit the Bradford on Avon Town Council website and follow the links.

Bradford on Avon Arts Festival – End of Summer Party
T
he BoA Arts Festival came back with a bang!!
What a magical evening, both gentle and wonderfully atmospheric. The lantern parade was a tour de force with the number of lanterns, the ages, the quality and the combination of art and community. We showed off the town in all its glory with a fantastic light show, great entertainment including Dave Vigar’s Trio, The Frome Street Bandits, Sassparella Choir and the fire dancer Kat Collett. The bar ran out of drinks and food was still being served at the end of the evening. The feedback from everybody was amazing. Thank you everyone for making it such a glorious night.
Local author’s successful book gets first public reading
B
radford on Avon’s Peter Foreman reads extracts from his new novel ‘Pisuktuk the Wanderer’ at 7.00pm on Thursday 11th December in the Cellar Bar, The Swan Hotel, entry free. The evening gives a unique opportunity to hear sections read aloud by Foreman, to ask him any questions about his work and get your own signed copy of the book.
A gripping story, Foreman rewrites the fate of Mary Shelley’s monster from her classic Gothic novel ‘Frankenstein’. In ‘Pisuktuk the Wanderer’, Frankenstein’s monster morally reforms after a spiritual awakening induced by the natural beauty of the Northern Lights. The novel’s other central character, Leon Vaughan, also endeavours to experience a spiritual awakening. However, Leon’s good intentions take a dark turn when he discovers the monster and uncovers his former identity. The novel also draws attention to the issues surrounding global warming. “I wanted to intertwine themes of human destruction with
16
themes of global destruction – a current issue that affects us all,” said Foreman. He adds, “The book offers a window into the cultures of Eskimos and Sami people and how the global warming crisis has affected their communities.” “The Swan Hotel’s Cellar Bar is a perfect complement to the novel,” said Foreman. “The sinister tone and dark themes of the book will be brought to life in this atmospheric underground cellar space.” To read more about Peter Foreman and his work, visit his website: www.peterjohnforeman. wordpress.com.

The Three Barns in BoA The Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust manages three barns in the town. All are available for hire. The 600-year old Priory Barn in Newtown was the Trust’s first restoration project, in the late 1960s. It can be hired for private functions, e.g. exhibitions, parties and meetings. The West Barn, on Barton Grange Farm, restored by the Trust and opened for community use in 2003, has become one of the most popular venues for civil weddings in Wiltshire. It too is also suitable for private functions. Earlier this year, the Trust took over day-to-day management of the Tithe Barn (the second largest in the country) on the Farm. It is available for certain “Community” events, but the Conditions of Hire are demanding. The new agent for the Trust, who gives information and handles bookings, is Travel Options 4U at 54 Frome Road, Tel: 01225 860 977. E-mail j@traveloptions4u.gtmail.co.uk.

Another Full Year for Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon
I
t’s been a busy year for Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon. We have had monthly meetings with varied and interesting speakers, we are involved with numerous projects locally and further afield, with others and on our own. We have a number of achievements to celebrate - mostly where the group has worked with others in the community.
carbon footprints (giving us more ideas). We heard from Sustrans how to use our cars less.We also heard how the sale of electric cars in the UK has started to take off - a year earlier than expected and that it is now possible to buy second hand electric cars, and that charging points are widespread including in the Station Carpark in Bradford of course!
India has scrapped over 200 coal mining licenses.
We heard excellent speakers at the launch of the Local Food Map/ Directory at Cumberwell Golf Club, talking about how to change farming methods for the good of the land as well as the animals and us!
We have had stalls at various street and other markets, travelled to other parts of the UK to find out what else is happening and to share ideas and we have written lots a letters and signed many petitions. And much more besides!
We put our prospective MEPs on the spot at a public meeting about taking climate change seriously. Swift boxes have gone up around the town (we had a wonderful talk about these amazing birds). Wildlife and pollinator friendly verges were sown and are flourishing.
There is good news a little further afield too - planning permission has been granted for a solar farm at Cockhill, Trowbridge; Ecotricity is expanding its renewable energy programme in the South West; Glasgow University is the first academic institution in Europe to divest from the fossil fuel industry; wind power provided up to 25% of the UKs energy in August and a little further afield,
Apart from our Christmas party on Monday 8 December (see What’s On pages) our January meeting “You Tell Us” (also see What’s On pages) is a chance for you to come along and talk to us about your ideas, about what you are already doing towards a carbon neutral Bradford and what you’d like us to be doing - we are in the middle of planning next years events! And of course there’s lots more to do!
We heard about how “Cool Communities” in Winchester work together towards reducing their 22
And back in Bradford on Avon - the most recent success story - solar panels are now fitted and up and running on Fitzmaurice Primary School (see photos) - much earlier than originally expected - all down to the determination, dedication and sheer hard work of local people.
Visit our website www. climatefriendlybradfordonavon. co.uk. Sign up for the monthly news letter and come along. You’d be very welcome.

Deer Feeding at Dyrham Park As the winter closes in and food becomes scarce, the ranger team at Dyrham Park are inviting visitors to join them for daily deer feeding sessions. This National Trust house near Bath is home to a herd of almost 200 fallow deer, which spend most of the year grazing on tender shoots in the 270 acre park; but come the end of November they need a bit of a helping hand. The National Trust rangers head out into the park to feed the deer and from December 1- March 31, offer visitors the chance to join them for this carefully planned exercise. Beth Taylor, Outdoors Officer, said: “Over the winter months we have to help feed the deer and we are keen to share this unique experience with our visitors. It’s a great chance to get close to the deer, but we do need to be careful they don’t become too reliant on humans. “Each feeding session is carried out under the strict guidance of one of our trained rangers in order to help provide the deer with the food they need, but without them becoming too tame.” Deer feeding is available for up to two adults and two children and takes place at 9.30am daily. Tickets cost £10 per person and booking is essential. To book, please call Beth Taylor on 0117 937 1333 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dyrhampark No40 December/January 2015

arah Julyan, the founder of Different by Design, has over twenty years’ successful management experience in the leisure industry. When the opportunity arose to branch out in a different direction, she formed her own garden design and build company where she could use her enthusiasm and flair for creativity and design. Since then, she has established a reputation for high quality, imaginative, customerfocussed work. With over ten years’ experience of design and build in the areas of landscaping, gardens, timber buildings, playgrounds and play equipment, Sarah gets her greatest enjoyment from applying her creativity and maximising the potential of a site to meet a client’s needs and aspirations. 26
Picking up from her father’s passion for art and design she is always on the look out for beautiful, interesting and innovative art and design in buildings, interiors, gardens and spaces. What she sees and finds gets fed into the projects and products she produces. Sarah is now excited to introduce an exciting range of bi-folding sliding doors; a wonderful way to help integrate interior and exterior living spaces with ease and elegance. Kustomfold, bespoke timber folding sliding doors are available in beautiful solid engineered softwood, hardwood or oak with a choice of opening configurations, cill details, paint or stain finishes and inward or outward opening options. This timber folding sliding door system is top hung with the
bottom guided on an aluminium track, tested to many thousands of cycles. There are a wide range of glazing choices on offer, including triple glazing and also an opaque glass option. E
dward Checkley is a fully chartered architect and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He has lived and worked in the area for five years working for a number of well known local and national conservation practices. Edward can demonstrate a broad spectrum of experience and has worked on a variety of projects, from historic but unlisted cottages, town apartments up to grand listed country estates. One of his projects was recently selected as Telegraph Property of The Week (as shown above). When thinking about an internal or external project for your property, an architect can show you options that you may not have considered, ensuring you make the most of all the space
available. He can offer advice, help manage building works, ensuring work is in-keeping with the age of your building, draw up plans and make recommendations on smaller projects (for kitchens, or even the smallest room of the house). In addition, he can assist with planning issues, especially in conservation areas. Edward can demonstrate a 100% success rate with planning and listed building consent due to his understanding of the area and he knows what can realistically be achieved. Edward is passionate about reinstating period features in older buildings, and enjoys internal refurbishment projects where he can reinstate lost sash windows and historic joinery details. Whilst being aesthetically pleasing, these can also add value to your property.
To arrange an initial consultation at ÂŁ75 (no VAT), to discuss your thoughts and ideas, please contact Edward on 01225 290778.

Stained Glass for your home, office or historic building Making stained glass is something I have been passionate about for a very long time. It begun with a real interest in drawing, illustrating and painting. Being a community spirited person I always dreamed of what would be better way to bring colour into the lives of those around me than making stained glass. It is wonderful to work with, as the light and transparency makes it fun to play with when constructing a panel no matter how big or small. At Woolley Grange Farm at my open and spacious studio I teach and create wondrous and beautiful stained glass pieces for private or public spaces. I work with my clients to design and make their fabulous exciting projects ! The flickering patterns that travels across a wall or floor as a result of the light passing through the coloured glass is inspirational. This Christmas until Dec 22nd I am offering 10% discount with a gift voucher for any stained glass course. Go to my website for a list of new courses for Winter 20115!

hristine’s Sustainable Supermarket started in 2005 is going from strength to strength. As more and more people are turning to organic, additive free, specialist diets, environmentally friendly and Fairtrade goods it is a ‘one stop shop’ to get all your weekly needs. Prices are always compared to the big Supermarkets to keep them as low as possible and often cheaper! The customer base has doubled over the past two years due to the Big supermarket price comparisons which is mainly due to the fact that customers are now shopping for Quality and not Quantity. The time has now come where the effort and care we go to when buying a house or a gift is now going into what we put on and inside our bodies.

CRACKERS
T
his Christmas why not have a go at making your own crackers? You can add a little bit of extra special surprise to the family Christmas Day with cracker gifts and jokes that you have chosen yourself. Choose your own design, either go to town with some luxury paper or have fun rummaging through last year’s Christmas decorations and oddments of wrapping paper.
Take a cardboard tube and place it on the longest edge of the fancy paper, insert the gift, the joke and the present inside. Start to roll the paper around the tube, then secure with sello tape.
Fancy coloured paper, cut roughly into rectangles 30cm long and 20 cm wide. At least three loo roll cardboard inner tubes. Sello Tape, string and ribbon, Cracker Snaps - available from craft shops A gift; sweets, chocolates, small toys. A joke
Tape along the length of the paper to secure.
Slide the tubes at either end out of the paper slightly by about 3cm or one inch. Feel the paper to find the gaps beside the central tube. Squeeze and crease the paper gently between the gaps.
Position two other tubes at either end
Tie a long piece of string or ribbon around the creased paper and pull tight, the outer tube will help to shape the cracker ‘handles’. Repeat on the other side. Remove the outer tubes and have fun decorating you own Christmas crackers!
Continue to roll up the paper until the tubes are concealed.

Frank and Elsie - Vintage, Retro, Vinyl...
F
rank and Elsie have just celebrated their first birthday! The company was created by sisters Ellen and Dora in Autumn 2013. Their aim was to bring a shop to their home town of Bradford on Avon that had the feel of the Carnaby boutiques they spent most of their time (and money!) in. Both sisters come from a very theatrical background with Ellen having gained a BA Hons Degree in Theatre Production specialising in Costume Design and Stage Management and Dora graduating from the American Musical Theatre Academy. This passion for theatre has assisted no end in their appreciation and love of all things vintage as well as their efforts to make the shop interior and fabulous windows, look like a stage set for everyone’s enjoyment!
Once you step through the doors, past the original mannequins, you’ll find rails of beautiful, vintage pieces as well as retro and quirky items from the boutiques the sisters grew up admiring. In addition to the clothing, the record player will be turning as they work their way through the vinyl records on sale. Around the edges of the shop are rails of original blouses, evening tops, skirts, jackets and dresses of all styles as well as a selection of men’s clothing. It’s not just clothes though! There are also gift shelves brimming with little bits and pieces as well as retro toys, vintage luggage, hat boxes and cases of vinyl records along with original magazines, posters and books.
They source their varied stock from all over the country however, they are always happy to sell on 50/50 commission the following items if you have them hidden away at home; iconic vintage clothing and rock and pop LPs and singles. Regular customers who have already discovered this ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ include costume enthusiasts and designers, dancers and many who just love a vintage look! radford on Avon’s Old Post Office has taken on a new identity the historic building, situated in The Shambles, now houses a ladies clothing and accessories boutique. Although original features such as the mosaic floor and panelled Post Office counter are still in evidence, the new fixtures and fittings breathe life into the interior; the pretty chandeliers highlight the original plaster coving, and the brass clothing displays echo the original door fittings and brass skirting. The overall effect is both welcoming and very chic. But don’t be deceived by appearances - prices are surprisingly reasonable! Specialising in a range of Italian clothing branded Cadenza, the style is prevalently Boho, with lots of layering, lightweight knitwear and silk. Silk and sparkles for party season are much in evidence, but equally, you will find beautiful casual everyday wear. “My aim is to stock a wide range off fun but wearable designs at affordable prices”, says Debbie, the boutique’s owner. “I like to fill my shop with things you won’t find in the High Street chains.” The shop’s large selection of scarves in silk and cotton blends could provide the compliment to just about any outfit, and will undoubtedly find their way into lots of Christmas stockings; the 100% silk scarves in an array of jewel colours are especially gorgeous! Also on display is a large selection of Helen Moore faux fur tippet scarves, cuffs and huffs, all made in Devon.

BRANDYCLASSICS Vintage Cognacs From a Past Era There are many surprises residing in Bradford on Avon, not least the UK offices of Brandyclassics, a local company which supplies luxury vintage cognacs, armagnacs and other brandies online and to the trade. All the brandies they supply are handpicked for their quality, flavour and provenance. Vintage Brandies are extremely popular as presents for birthdays and anniversaries as the year printed on the label captures the uniqueness of the gift and the thought behind the purchase. They also have a rarity value as vintages are produced in small quantities and so are always in limited supply. Specialising in cognac, Brandyclassics also has its own label, Hermitage. Hermitage Cognacs are produced by many of the top distillers in the most favoured parts of the cognac producing region of France, known as Grande Champagne. These producers have skills, not just in distillation, but also in the ageing of rare cognacs which produces rich flavours. Each vintage comes from a single estate and is selected for its highly individual style.
All of Brandyclassics’ brandies come beautifully packaged in presentation boxes. From the Hermitage red silk boxes, designed to embody the quality and exclusivity of the Hermitage Vintage Cognac range, to the Raymond Sabourin pearlescent white, silver and purple presentation box which always catches the ladies’ eye, they make great Christmas presents. As a special offer for the readers of A Local Life, Brandyclassics are offering 5% off any of their products between now and Christmas. Bradford Town FC
P
roof that football does exist outside the soap opera of the Premier League can be found at Trowbridge Road, home of Bradford Town FC. Formed in 1992, Town secured use of the former Avon Sports ground in 1996 and have made considerable improvements in recent years. Floodlights were installed in the 2008/09 season ensuring eligibility to play in the FA Cup and FA Vase competitions, and new stands have been erected providing covered seating and standing accommodation. The club have been making waves in recent years, after finally making into the Western League following promotion from the Wiltshire League in 2006. Seven solid seasons in Division One followed before amassing 102 points last season to take the title, elevating them to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The team also featured in last season’s thrilling Wiltshire Senior Cup final with local rivals
Melksham Town in front of a vociferous 526-strong crowd at Hardenhuish Park, Chippenham. Last season’s success was greatly aided by the 77 goals (including 11 hat-tricks) netted by homegrown hotshot Sam Jordan, who drew national acclaim in becoming the football pyramid’s highest scorer. Despite bowing out of this season’s FA Cup to Poole Town earlier in the season, Bradford are still on the Wembley trail in the FA Vase following their disposal of Malmesbury Victoria in the 1st Round. The team are also well placed in the league to mount an assault on the promotion places in the second half of the season. The club is blessed with loyal supporters, with home crowds often reaching three figures. The Blue Army ensure there is good backing at away matches. A warm welcome is guaranteed with hot and cold snacks available and the bar is open at half time. For the best live sport in Bradford, get behind the Town and support your local team! Returning home from hospital with the right care
O
ne in ten older people over 75 years of age are admitted to hospital as an emergency; this increases to one in five when people get to 95 years of age. Over the past 5 years the number of older people who have unplanned hospital admissions has risen by 5% - in real terms this amounts to an increase 500,000 people. Most of these unplanned hospital admissions will be in the winter months as a result of strokes, heart failure, falls, chest infections and urinary tract infections or a combination of these. 52
Age UK report that more than 78,000 bed-days are used each month by elderly patients who have no medical need to be there but who are unable to be discharged because they do not have the right form of home care in place. This often leads to people being referred to nursing homes, which results in increased disorientation further reducing the likelihood of the person returning to their own home. Therefore it is really important to get the right package of support in place prior to hospital discharge.
Arthur & Mary’s story (names changed to protect identity)
Arthur and Mary have been married for over 55 years. Over recent years Arthur started to develop vascular disease leading to mild confusion and mobility problems. In January 2014, Arthur was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and whilst in hospital he developed a number of urinary tract infections that significantly increased his confusion and disorientation. Arthur had always been a strong independent man and despite being in hospital he
Tell advertisers you saw them in a local life
HEALTH & FITNESS was determined to get up and carry on as before. However he had become so unstable that he would fall and the nurses had to lower his bed to the floor with a soft mattress next to the bed and wouldn’t let him walk without 2 of them in attendance. Arthur got increasingly frustrated and non-cooperative and Mary was getting very upset seeing his decline and distress. One day she came in to see him in the hospital and he was slumped in the chair and was completely unable to communicate with her. At the review meeting that followed Mary was told that because of his decline and frequent attempts to get up at night, Arthur needed to go into a nursing home. Mary was determined that wouldn’t happen! On recommendation Mary called Shelley Saxon of Blue Sky Enabling. Shelley came and assessed Arthur in hospital and visited the house to do risk
assessments and made some recommendations. Mary rallied her family who helped her make the necessary alterations to the bathroom and access to the house all ready for Arthur. Shelley helped arrange equipment from the hospital and co-ordinate Arthur’s hospital discharge, providing Arthur and Mary with an enabler who provides live in support to meet their needs. Blue Sky Enabling enablers work with people in an engaging way that helps them rebuild their capacities. Since returning home with Blue Sky Enabling’s live in support, Arthur has gone from strength to strength. Clear of all infections, he no longer tries to climb out of bed in the middle of the night and is once again able to shave himself and engage in personal care tasks. He is walking indoors with a walker with support from his enabler, and is supported to go
into the garden in his wheelchair where he is able to participate in gardening, picking beans and dead-heading roses etc, and has visited his beloved rugby club to see a game. Shelley has spoken to Mary and with the help of their enabler they are starting to put together Arthur’s Book of Lovely Days. Mary says, “When the hospital nurse assessor came to assess Arthur last week, she couldn’t believe she was assessing the same person! I’m just so pleased to have Arthur home with me and to see him so well – I have my husband back!!” To find out how Blue Sky Enabling can help your loved ones return home from hospital with the right care so they can thrive, call 0844 225 1337 or look us up on www.blueskyenabling.org.

New Club House for Freshford FC N eil Pollard from Bath-based Architects practice HPH Architects worked on behalf of the Freshford United Football Club to secure a 60% grant from The Football Foundation to fund the new build of their new club house. It replaces a very rotten old ‘scout hut’ which has been falling apart for many years. The new club house was designed and built to the Football Foundation’s specifications, with a Clubroom, a balcony, showers, Refs’ room and full disabled access.
Freshford United Football club was started in 1957 by the late Henry Brown, who’s daughter Ruth Fulton is still the secretary for the club today. The club is situated on ‘Browns Park’ on Abbey Road, Freshford (opposite the entrance
to Homewood Park hotel) They are a hugely successful side, punching way above their weight in the Trowbridge and District League. Their current manager Chris Birleson started in the Youth side at Freshford many years ago!
There will be an opening event this Saturday 25th October at 12.30 to launch the new building at which Jacob Rees-Mogg will be guest of honour. 54

Look forward to a comfortable, warm and secure winter Winter can be beautiful; crisp mornings, a white sheen on the lawn and clear blue skies. It can also come with its downsides: early darkness, cold, icy surfaces and on occasions, snow and slush. Right now is the ideal time of year to be researching safe, warm and supportive options for our frailer loved-ones. So if you are concerned about the wellbeing of an elderly family member or friend, we encourage you to find out more about Porthaven. Our award-winning care and nursing homes are a refreshing alternative to what many people traditionally consider a ‘care home’. The surroundings are beautiful, the menu is excellent and our programme of activity, entertainment and hobbies is acknowledged as industry-leading. But most importantly, we believe our nursing and care is second to none. Don’t wait for the nights to draw in and the cold to take hold. Call us today and give yourself the time to start planning for a pleasant winter, whatever the weather brings.

eadgateSC is a small company that delivers a range of safety and risk products in addition to training courses. We were formed over two years ago to satisfy the need from outdoor clubs for First Aid qualifications and it has spread its range ever since. Delivering First Aid courses is one of the mainstays of the company and now we can offer a full range of First Aid and Safety Courses. There are 3-day and 1-day First Aid at Work awards - applicable to offices, shops, cafés or small industrial units - through to 1 day Fire Awareness and Safety Awareness courses. With the rise in the availability of defibrillators, we can also provide a package to train people in CPR and defibrillator use. The Activity First Aid courses are still available and in addition there are awards for First Responders, Paediatric First Aid, Anaphylaxsis Awareness and Risk Assessment in the workplace. The company is accredited to First Aid Awards (www.firstaidawards.co.uk) for the delivery of all courses and they act as the Awarding Body ensuring that course content is correct and relevant, course
instructors are up to standard and all examinations have been correctly assessed. Only on validation of all course documents are the certificates issued. So, if you are a small business, a sports club or a village group looking for First Aid courses that can be run locally, look us up on the website, e-mail or call. PETS PLACE •C onsider all the requirements the animal may have in its life. • E nsure you able to cover all costs involved. • P ut in place provisions to guarantee your pet gets the attention, exercise & training it requires. Without adequate contemplation the excitement & fun can soon turn into a stressful situation. This is reflected in number of pets in animal shelters, as owners sometimes find they no longer have the time & finances required to keep them. It is essential to research into the type of pet you are looking at getting, learning about its needs & traits to ensure you can provide it the home it needs and that it fits into your lifestyle. Behaviourists and trainers can offer help and advice to ensure that you and your pet live happily together. Also consider giving a second chance to one of the many animals that may have ended up in a rescue centre this Christmas. Natashya Sheppard FdSC Canine Behaviour & Training, DipCABT is local holistic pet behaviourist and trainer who can help & advise to ensure harmony for you and your pet.
Pets Dental Problems Clients look at us as if we are mad when the vets and nurses recommend that they brush their pet’s teeth every day, but this really is the only way to properly look after them. Dental chews and toys can help but nothing beats proper brushing with a good quality toothbrush. It is very likely that without home dental care dental disease will progress until a dental procedure is required. This can be costly and often involves painful extraction of multiple teeth. During November & December Garston Veterinary Group are offering a 20% discount for all dental procedures. Please contact the surgery if you are concerned about your pet’s dental health.
A pet is for life not just Christmas During the festive season many households would have decided to share their home with a new pet. This is always an exciting and fun event, but to assist a harmonious life for all:

Furry friend?
My children are desperate for a pet. I find looking after them enough of a responsibility and can’t face the thought of adding to my already hectic household. Am I being unreasonable? Would it be good for them? left hairs everywhere and I had flea bites for the first time ever. But I don’t want to offend her either. What do you advise?
B Walker, Holt
Answer I think there are many advantages to having a pet. It helps encourage nurturing behaviour, responsibility for something other than yourself, regular exercise (in the case of walking a dog) and most of all, it’s fun! Think carefully though; having a pet isn’t cheap and if your children lose interest, you’ll be the one caring for it. Why not volunteer to look after a friend’s pet first, and see how that goes . . .
Fussy with food My 10 year old daughter is incredibly fussy with food and it’s starting to really affect family life. I find myself cooking two separate meals – one for her, and one for my husband and I, which I know is ridiculous. I followed weaning advice from all the baby books when she was growing up, so don’t know where I’ve gone so wrong. How can I break this habit? S Potter, Melksham
Answer Firstly, just cook one meal, and don’t give her a different option – no child will starve him/herself. Cut down on snacks, make sure she’s really hungry at mealtimes, and get her to help with preparing and choosing the food. You will get there, but it takes perseverance . . .
Unwanted visitor My aunt is planning to visit me soon and has asked if she can bring her rather senile old dog. I have to admit I’m not a dog lover. The last time it came it
B Masters, Winsley
Answer Oh dear. Perhaps you could say that someone in your family has developed an allergy to dog hair and suggest that the dog might find the change of scene unsettling given its age? Or suggest visiting her on her own territory – that might be easier for both of you.
Home woes My house has been on the market for six months and I’ve only had a handful of viewings and no offers. I have been offered a new job in Edinburgh and need to relocate next month, so selling the house is essential. Can you offer me any tips? T King, Corsham
Answer Change your Estate Agent, make sure the house is priced competitively, de-clutter massively, put anything you don’t need in storage, and paint the house in neutral tones. Try to be objective about the house and don’t think of it as your home any longer. Easier said than done, I know. Good luck. Erica Morgan
