welcome
to our Bradford on Avon spring edition packed with all the usual local news and things to do over the bank holidays in May. We interview Adam Henson the Country File presenter whilst he was talking at Wiltshire Heights Care home and found out about his life on and off screen looking into his family background and his passion of farming.
Whip-up the perfect eggs benedict accompanied by new season asparagus and plant out those spring greens to make the most of the glorious early spring weather we are experiencing. The current climate is polling change and we hope elect fresh growth in our gardens as in our Spring Greens feature on page 44. This month you have a chance to lobby support from your local Avonfield Garden Centre and WIN £25 of seeds. Just complete the crossword and (s)elect the hidden winning clue on page 54. There’s lots of inspiration for your interiors too with various parties all manifesting great ideas to canvas all tastes! See page 20 for another of our independent businesses in the town, Moulton bikes. They recently travelled to Monaco for the LikeBike show on the waterfront and the inaugural 30 lap NiteRace. A father and son team competed against larger wheeled opposition on the formula one race track. It’s fabulous to see business blooming with several new additions to the town. Retail plus food and drink are all expanding in our thriving constituency. We see the launch of BOA Business formerly the Chamber of Commerce with a more informal organisation to promote and help over 250 businesses in the area. Membership is free and open to all businesses in the area. Check out the website to get involved at: www.boabusiness.co.uk. Please remember, this is your magazine and we are polling your community stories and events. So everyone get on board!

Pre-School Ballet A
& Boogie
t this time of the year, the supermarkets provide lots of exciting outdoor play products, which often include pom poms and batons. With the longer days and nicer weather, it is a great opportunity to get active and now there are some new Pre-school Dance classes that will help give you some ideas for dance moves to do with those pom poms and batons! Pre-School Ballet & Boogie are Dance classes, perfect for little children who love to bop and twirl around. In the half an hour session, the children are taught Ballet plus a few more funky moves from qualified Dance teacher, Annette Wilsher. There are opportunities to dance with props such as beautiful fairy wands and ribbons and each child has their own sticker chart where their achievements are celebrated every week. The aim is to encourage and build confidence. The classes take place in Bearfield Church, Bradford on Avon on Friday afternoons. Parents and Grandparents get to stay in the room and cheer on their child. For those coming from further afield, there is car parking in the residential streets around the Hall. For more information, please go to our website. Trial sessions are available and for those children not yet old enough for ‘Pre-School Ballet & Boogie’, there are also ‘Baby and Toddler’ Dance classes held in Bradford on Avon. www.bopaboutdance.com 07843 252265

GARDENING
Gardening microbes The key to growing healthy plants is first to build up a healthy garden soil!
H
ealthy soils are full of organic matter and humus, teeming with beneficial microbial activity, earthworms – an abundance of nature’s wonderful little helpers. Plants growing in rich, healthy soil are vibrant, full of vitality and health, having few or rare problems with pest attack, diseases or nutrient deficiencies. 40 years ago a Japanese scientist discovered a microbial soil inoculant that is both organic and totally safe. This he termed Effective Microorganisms or EM and is pretty much what local company Microbz now brew. EM helps rebalance beneficial bacteria, converting organic materials, regeneratively, into nutrients that are more readily available for plant uptake. Plants thrive significantly in fertile soil and this in turn increases growth
Worms thrive on bokashi in the soil
and nutritional quality. Plant roots and natural fungi in the soil combine symbiotically to provide food for each other. This natural approach to gardening allows a reduction or total removal of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. BoA resident and Microbz partner, Peter Hodkinson says, “Two years ago I abandoned my regular dig/ turn/weed approach to producing veg and created a raised no-dig garden. I had been inspired by an Austrian who uses EM in all areas of his life, not just gardening. He sees EM as an essential link in all stages of the life cycle – in this case, to aid composting, inoculate the soil, sow seeds and foliar feed direct to the plants”. Peter recently toured northern Spain witnessing EM’s incredible results “Europe is way in front of the UK in optimising organic EM methods... results in my own garden have been staggering! I now appreciate the necessity of a healthy soil. Spinach leaves were over 16” long with a high brix* value over 12. Beetroot the size of tennis balls – without pith.” Peter uses kitchen waste inoculated with an EM mix called ‘bokashi’ (Japanese for pickled veg) to use as a quick compost breakdown. “once my bokashi bin is full I need only wait 2 weeks before digging it into the soil”. Last year we had a lot of fun with year 6 Fitzmaurice

pupils making their own bokashi. Also, a dedicated bakashi bin includes a tap for ‘compost tea’ to be drawn off as a liquid feed once diluted 1:200 with water. EM can be administered most times of the year, though late in the day away from strong sunlight is advised. Combine with mulching and soil remineralisation for best results. Minerals can be added through the application of rock dust or sea water minerals. Microbz also create a brew that balances garden ponds. Partner Dom Penrose, another BoA resident, simply pours some into his pond annually to keep it clear and control the blanket weed. No need to remove the fish as it is perfectly safe for them. Microbz gardening products are being sold in BoA by J Alex Brown on Silver Street, Avonfield Garden Centre in Hilperton or ordered online at www.microbz.co.uk *Refractometers are used to measure the quality of fruit and vegetables via the dissolved mineral and carbohydrate content.

GARDENING
The title is even more remarkable as Avonfield Gardens only moved to Hilperton from Bradford on Avon last year. James and Matthew took the brave decision to relocate due to increased overheads. However they were confident their business would be up to the challenge.
bloomin’ marvellous
Their new home on Marsh Road, Hilperton gives them exclusive occupancy, easier access to the site and the location means it’s in the perfect position for customers to pop in on the way to Trowbridge and to the recycling centre.
Local garden centre takes county title
A
vonfield Gardens in Marsh Road, Hilperton, has been named Wiltshire’s Best Garden Centre – even though the whole business only moved premises last year. Owned by James Vincent and Matthew Webb, the centre received the honour after being voted for the top spot by readers of the weekly local newspaper the Wiltshire Times.
James and Matthew still have their roots in Bradford on Avon where James Vincent also owns the local hardware store – J Alex Brown in Silver Street – offering a selection of plants, tools, ironmongery and hardware. They have both continued to work with local schools helping with their gardening clubs. They are also supporting Dorothy House Hospice in honour of its 40th anniversary this year.
James Vincent said: “It’s a huge honour for us. We are so touched by the kindness and support we have received from everyone.”

An invitation out of d’Azur:
Moultons in Monaco!
S
Nite riders We were asked to take part in an inaugural event there, the NiteRace, which covered 30 laps on a section of the Monaco Formula 1 race track. Many local residents, charity-minded, or yacht involved cyclists took part and we invited a father and son team, Steve (55) and Zeb Kyffin (17) to bring their Moulton bikes down from Newcastle to take part. They performed impressively, lining up alongside 100 big-wheeled racing bikes. Zeb has only just become a category 3 cyclist, but he cycled his heart out and was only ever overtaken by the Pro-rider on the race. His father was only 5 seconds a lap slower than him and together they did a fantastic job flying the flag! The prize-goody bag given to every participant included free tickets to the LikeBike show (featuring unique bicycles from around the world) held the following weekend, so many visiting us on the stand already knew from personal experience just how fast a Moulton can be ridden! The LikeBike show took place at the prime Monaco waterfront location, the Grimaldi Forum. Prince Albert of Monaco made a kind and supportive video-taped message for us all, welcoming us to these inaugural cycling events held in the Principality. 20

ometimes it’s important for us here at Moulton Bicycles to go further afield to show our unique bicycles to a wider audience. Hand-built here in the heart of Bradford on Avon it’s a pleasure to see our bicycles being ridden at new events and in April we were happy to accept an out-of-the-blue invitation from Monaco.
many visiting us on the “stand knew from experience

”
As icing on the cake, we were also allowed to have a stainless steel Moulton on show for ten days at the Monaco Yacht Club, which was a rare coup and kind gesture on the Club's part. At the same time, Tomo-san, our friend from Cyclograph magazine took photos and video of the Kyffins both racing and touring on Moultons, which hopefully will feature in pages of a popular Japanese cycling magazine, another way of spreading the word about Bradford on Avon’s Moulton bicycles far and wide!

hen setting up a new business in a field that is full of competitors it is so important to stand out from the crowd. Julie Mason of Coppice Guild was so thrilled when the judges of The Bath Life Awards recognised how special Coppice Guild is. Their comments were: “Coppice Guild is distinctive, highly connected to artisanal Bath, beautiful designs and highly consultative” It is in being connected to local makers, with complete artistic freedom that makes Coppice Guild so fresh and interesting. This can be seen clearly in a couple of projects now completed. National award winning builders Bloor Homes were quick to discover Coppice Guild and decided to put a range known as ‘The Shambles’ in their
22

flagship property in Fortescue Fields in Norton St Philip. The property needed to have a kitchen with elegant period detailing whilst retaining a modern twist. Downstairs is a classic shaker laundry room – still very popular when kept very simple and uncluttered. As a complete contrast, Coppice Guild have installed a minimalistic kitchen in a historical manor house close to Bath, where blending the old with the new worked very successfully. “The client wanted something bright and contemporary to replace a very dark kitchen in a room with little natural light. We added architectural features to the room such as lowering the outside edge of the ceiling to install concealed uplighters – to add height to the room. Also we created a lobby area so that guests did not walk

straight into the kitchen whilst doubling as a recycling store - key to making the space functional and appealing” Watch out for yet another design range of furniture that is ‘on the drawing board’ for later on this year – something elegant with a Scandinavian vibe. Julie is keeping her eyes open for a client with a stunning empty space needing a new kitchen who would be happy to help develop the new prototype and be prepared to have photographs taken when completed. Cookery events play an important role in reaching out to potential clients whilst keeping in touch with the community. The next event is on 20th April for all AGA enthusiasts. Details can be found on www. coppiceguild.co.uk where you can register to be on a mailing list for forthcoming events.

Moving on with
Marmalade…
I
t’s now two years since we first met Vanessa at her brand new interior styling shop on the Lansdown Road in Bath. Things have moved on a lot since then.
“there has never
been a dull day. I’ve been lucky enough to work on some great interior projects
26
”
With another successful shop (in Clifton) she has been incredibly busy – with two awards to her name already (Vanesssa won the 2014 Bath Life Awards for Creativity and very recently the 2015 Women in Business Awards for Innovation). Also, a new distribution business selling Annie Sloan paint to other stockists, a permanently busy commission studio, and new online shop for her own designed products about to launch soon. “I am not quite sure where the last two years have gone”, says Vanessa – “in a puff of chalk dust I think. But there has never been a dull day. I’ve been lucky enough
www.alocallife.co.uk
to work on some great interior projects” she is currently redesigning Bartons Tea Rooms in the centre of Bath, with the help of it’s new proprietor to turn it into an Italian Wine Bar/Café. She is also very busy training up to 20 people a month on how to use her chalk paints and upcycle their furniture with Marmalade House renowned French and Gustavian paint finishes. To Vanessa, the most exciting thing of all is that she is now bringing together her own brand of products that she has researched and sourced, in some cases designed and had made, and all of which they have painted. The all new Marmalade House online shop launches early May moving the business in an exciting new direction. “It was always my intention to make
HOUSE & HOME
Marmalade House a brand in it’s own right and we are now almost there”. It’s been a lot of very hard work – juggling three children, a husband who travels and a house that is used for corporate and press location shoots, “I have a fabulous team of people working with me. Each and every day is very different and we all do a bit of everything”, says Vanessa. The aim this year is to take stock, and strategise the direction we take with the business. Next month in May sees the launch of her online shop packed full of new products, complimenting this, Vanessa will be starting her blog with lots of interior fashion trends. Go to their website for further details about courses, new products and paints.

HOUSE & HOME town has had the good fortune to include among its residents a professional draftsman who was happy to devote his spare time, for much of his working life, to the recording of his local townscape.
Bradford
Facades
A
drian Dark is well known as a skilled decorator and, with his wife Sue, for the quality of their garden at Woolley Green. But it may be less well known that he had trained as a draftsman and that for the past thirty years he has been quietly sketching and drawing the townscape in and around Bradford on Avon. Having carefully measured their facades, he has created 101 measured drawings of interesting buildings, each to a scale of 1:50. These drawings and his sketch books have been hidden in his home, known only to friends and acquaintances.
To reveal this hidden treasure, the Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust – as part of the celebration of its 50th anniversary – has now published Adrian’s work in book form. “Bradford Facades - Made to Measure” can be obtained from Ex Libris bookshop in The Shambles or from www.bradfordfacades.co.uk and the price is £25.

Bath iconic
mass cycling event
M
ore than 1,500 cyclists are expected to take part in Bike Bath - the cycling event which is growing in popularity year on year. This fourth annual event takes place on Sunday July 5 at the Rec in Bath and cyclists are able to choose between distances of 25, 50 and 80 miles. The aim is to appeal to cyclists of all abilities. This year, each route has a sponsor, with the longest, the 80 mile ride, sponsored by the Yorkshire Regiment. Local company Bath Ales is sponsoring the 50 mile ride and the 25 mile route is backed by ‘tryactive’ – a partnership programme to encourage people to be more active while having fun and creating a sporting habit for life. The routes will head south of the city and will pass through glorious countryside surrounding
Bath and beyond. The Yorkshire Regiment will also be providing the food for the day for the cyclists and the Bath Ales marquee will offer a pay bar serving up their finest ales. Member of ‘tryactive' will also be on site encouraging people in the 25 mile ride. Jayne Fishwick, of Bike Bath says, “We have been absolutely delighted with the support from local businesses, Bike Bath is fast becoming a key part of the city’s sporting calendar. We’re also thrilled to confirm local newspaper the Bath Chronicle will be our media partner in 2015, so it is great to receive their support. “Riders can expect to see online photo galleries and a dedicated section in the Bath Chronicle where rider names and times will be printed.” Martin Pellow, of ‘try active’ has said, “Our team are very excited
to be working with Bike Bath and giving our support to the 25 miler event. This will provide a great opportunity for lapsed cyclists, newbies, families, young and old to get on their bikes.” This year, HPH Commercial Property, a founding sponsor, is providing the finisher medals, while architectural practice Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, are sponsoring the feed stations en route. Other local firms Withy King, Carter Jonas, Vision for Sport and Scheckter’s - are entering a team. Riders at Bike Bath can also expect spot prizes from Vision for Sport and a number of food and drink suppliers will be inviting riders to sample their products. Details about the event is available here www.bikebath. co.uk - the event is run by ICE - Iconic Cycling Events and specialises in designing high quality outdoor events. UP HEADING CLOSE
TV presenter and farmer
Adam Henson
shares his stories with Wiltshire audience
A
dam Henson, the 48-year-old presenter of popular BBC TV series Countryfile and Lambing Live, was in Wiltshire recently talking to a packed audience about his life as a farmer and a TV personality. He’d been invited to be guest speaker at an event organised by the Wiltshire Heights Care Home in Bradford on Avon and to support a new local charity – Hub@BA15 which aims to help those in need in the community. Guests queued outside in order to meet Adam, who works a 1,200-acre farm near Cheltenham – his farm is now famous for rare breeds and it’s open to the public as Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park – for more information see www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk
Childhood Adam talked about having a privileged childhood brought up on a farm with his sister and being able to live a free and abundant life in rural Gloucestershire. However the ability to entertain also runs through the family as Adam’s grandfather Leslie Henson was a well known actor and comedian, especially during WW2, and his uncle Nicky Henson is also an accomplished actor. Adam was clearly most in awe of his father Joe, who only ever wanted to farm and who inspired him to do whatever he wished in life. Adam always knew, wherever life took him – he would always come home to be a farmer. “My dad was my hero and my mentor,” he said. “He was so No42 May 2015

exciting and so entrepreneurial, he saw opportunities where others saw problems.” One of those opportunities was the drive to keep rare breeds of farm animals when they fell out of fashion, or didn’t suit the emerging farms where goods needed to be mass produced in the 1950s and 1960s. This vision means that today Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park is the oldest of its kind in the UK – first opening its doors to the public in 1973. Adam went to local schools and then agricultural college before 33
UP CLOSE to the farm, its success is actually down to teamwork. He particularly singled out his friend and now business partner Duncan Andrews. Duncan and Adam studied together and went their separate ways but always stayed in touch. On a visit to Duncan – where Adam had arrived to sheer his own rare breed sheep – Adam asked Duncan if he would come into his farm to help him run the business side of things. Duncan did and later came into the business with Adam.
The farm park itself attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, has a restaurant and its own camping and caravan site. The caravan site has 40 grass pitches, 16 with electrical hook-up and costs from £14.35 a night. Visitors to the farm park, can many rare breeds and can interact with the animals from feeding through to handling new born chicks. Some of the animals have also been used in films including oxen in Braveheart and one of Adam’s rams was used in Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe.
“Adam’s partner who works herself in
television, suggested he applied for a position as a presenter on Countryfile, as the BBC were looking for new talent. He did – and got the job
Top to bottom: Joe Henson and son Adam with Oxen; Joe Henson and John Neave, 1971; artist drawing Joe Henson with horse
taking time to travel the world, partly funded by working on farms in different countries. He then came home to join the family business and became the third generation tenant farmer on land at Guiting Power, near Bourton on the Water. Adam now lives in the main farm house with his partner and their two children Ella, aged 16 and Alfie, 12. Today at Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park Adam talked about the fact that although his name is attached 34
“One thing I’ve learned about the business is to surround yourself with those who complement you. They can see things you cannot see and together you can ensure the business grows,” Adam said. Today the farm has the most modern equipment available to ensure the farm is sustainable in the future and embraces conservation. The giant machinery used to harvest, plant and care for the land is all run via a satellite navigation system so that fertilisers are distributed efficiently, the make-up of the soil is mapped accurately and land is ploughed accurately ensuring fuel efficiency and cost savings. Some of the machinery costs £250,000 a unit. www.alocallife.co.uk
”
The Television Personality Adam told the audience how his own father Joe had often been featured on television so he grew up used to seeing a camera crew around the farm. Joe was a regular with Angela Rippon on a show called In The Country and he also appeared with Johnny Morris on Animal Magic. Then some years ago, Adam’s partner who works herself in television, suggested he applied for a position as a presenter on Countryfile, as the BBC were looking for new talent. He did – and got the job. Since then he’s travelled the country meeting interesting people and visiting beautiful places to find out about rural life across the UK. Now he
films largely at home with two self-shooting directors talking about day-to-day life and issues on the farm. More recently he became involved in Lambing Live with Kate Humble – an idea which Adam didn’t believe would ever catch on. He didn’t think watching lambing night after night would hold an audience. However the programme has proved immensely popular. Adam talked about loving his work in television and singled out John Craven and Kate Humble for particular praise. John Craven for being a genuine, professional presenter who told life ‘as it was’ during a difficult time for farming when the industry was besieged by problems such as the ‘egg crisis’ and ‘foot and mouth’. Kate Humble, Adam said, was the queen of live television, able to move seamlessly from shot to shot even if everything was being filmed in real time. As for the future of farming, Adam said he believed farming was now on the crest of a wave and should be positive about the future. He talked of wanting to encourage young people into the industry - even if, like him, it might not be possible to actually buy a farm or own land. He said people’s growing need to know
the history of the food they eat, the ethics of how animals are treated and the movement towards more locally produced and sourced food – all made it an exciting time to be part of the farming industry. Adam has also written his first book – My Life on the Land – which is available online or in the shops - http://amzn.to/1ElldXA

oot Health has come a long way from simply "cutting nails". It covers a myriad of lower limb conditions including corns, in-growing nails, infections, verrucae and many other foot problems. As life expectancy increases, many more elderly people find themselves needing help with their foot care, although this is not just the realm of the elderly, the explosion of road running has led to a huge increase in the development and demand for orthotics and many Foot Health Practitioners have studied Biomechanics enabling them to supply them to their patients. Foot Health Practitioners wishing to expand their expertise can take Diplomas in Cryotherapy for the freezing of verrucae. Painful feet can lead to a reluctance to mobilise in the elderly, which can cause added medical problems and isolation if they feel that they cannot venture out. As a Foot Health Practitioner I am on a voluntary register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care. The AVR scheme was set up by the Government to improve standards and safety for the benefit of the public. Accreditation demonstrates my commitment to high professional standards, to enhancing safety and delivering a better service. with new season asparagus METHOD Put vinegar, peppercorns and bay leaves in a pan and reduce by 3/4. STRAIN the vinegar into a glass bowl and discard the peppercorns and bay leaves. ADD the egg yolks to the vinegar and whisk over a pan of simmering water (bain marie) until thick. Do not boil the water as this will scramble the eggs. COOK Bacon if using instead of Parma Ham. When thick remove from heat and slowly WHISK in the clarified butter, a little at a time. When all the butter is gone, SEASON with lemon juice, salt and pepper and put to one side. Once the sauce is done put 2 pans of water on to SIMMER. In 1 put the 50ml vinegar.

Plant Spring Greens
J
ump start the gardening season before the summer vegetables are ready. While many standard garden vegetables cannot be planted outside or started from seed until the soil is fully warmed and the threat of frost is past, a variety of other cool season spring crops can be started right now. Cool season vegetables can be planted either directly in the soil with no cover, directly in the soil underneath a row cover or low tunnel, or in pots and trays in a sunny window or porch. Planting under row covers or a low tunnel will not only help to warm the soil quicker, but will also protect seedlings from frosts (although a hard freeze, or a long stretch of really cold weather may still be able to kill plants under row covers). Planting in pots and trays that can be moved outside into the sun on warm days, and brought inside at night, is one sure-fire way to beat the frost (as long as you remember to bring them
44
www.alocallife.co.uk
inside), and can be a great way to start an early spring garden long before the soil outside is ready to plant. Container gardening is also a good way to start growing some of your own food on windowsills, balconies, or decks, even if you don't have an outside garden plot. These spring vegetables, all of which can be easily planted from seed, are great choices for an early garden, and are usually foolproof enough to grow so that even the most beginning gardeners can reap a good harvest.
1
SPINACH Fresh baby spinach is also fairly quick to sprout and grow in a spring garden, and can be remarkably frost-resistant, especially when grown under cover.
2
CHARD This beet relative is another excellent spring vegetable that is easy to grow from seed, and can be eaten fresh or cooked.
FOOD & DRINK
3
LETTUCE Mixed lettuce seed (sometimes called mesclun mix), and instead of sowing the seeds farther apart, as is recommended for head lettuce, sow them very close together in each row, which will yield a solid row of lettuce leaves that is easy to harvest, and which can be cut repeatedly throughout the season. Baby greens can be harvested in a couple of weeks, and by planting successions of seeds every week or two, you can have a constant supply of greens for the kitchen.
4
RADISHES Radishes are one of the fastest vegetables you can grow, aside from the various greens, as many varieties are ready to be harvested in as little as three weeks. Radishes are great for interplanting with lettuce or other spring greens, and can help to naturally thin those crops as the radishes get harvested. Radishes mature incredibly quickly and are very hardy.
5 KALE Kale is another excellent spring vegetable that is easy to grow from seed, and because it can be harvested as a baby green and as full-sized leaves, can provide a lot of food from a little effort. 6
PEAS Snow peas, and other pod peas, are another great spring vegetable that kids tend to love. Peas take anywhere from 50 to 65 days to mature, depending on the variety, and can grow either as vines or as 'bushes', so they lend themselves equally well to both trellising and growing in regular garden beds. For best germination rates, pea seeds should be soaked in water overnight before planting them.

Legend of the Moonrakers B
By the mid-sixteenth century they had established a smuggling operation that would run for more than 200 years. The barrels of spirit were landed in quiet coves on the Hampshire coast and brought up to Swindon by night. The barrels were hidden during the day in church crypts or in village ponds. The green weed in the ponds concealed the barrels beautifully.
But there was a problem! The merchant’s favourite tipple was gin from Holland and brandy from France, but that carried a heavy import duty. The solution for the Wiltshiremen seemed obvious, they would have to smuggle in barrels of spirit and so avoid the import duty.
One cold and still night, many moons ago, they nearly got caught…the smugglers were raking their barrels out of the village pond when they were surprised by a patrol of excise men. The smugglers thought quickly and pointed to the moon’s reflection in the pond and told the officials that they were trying to rake in the cheese. The excise men, thinking they were simple local folk, laughed at them and went on their way. The Moonrakers had the last laugh over a tipple…and the legend of the Moonrakers was born!
etween the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries the wool produced from the English county of Wiltshire was known and prized all over Europe because of its superb quality. Dutch and Flemish merchants had permanent headquarters in the Wiltshire town of Swindon, attracted there by the high profit obtained from the wool trade.

Modern British hospitality When we bought the hotel in July 2013 our intention was to bring to life and celebrate the wonderful beauty, history and food of Wiltshire. We got to work refurbishing the public areas and guest bedrooms, created a kitchen garden, bought rare breed pigs and, working alongside Chef Matthew Briddon (River Café), started sourcing ingredients from the local farmers and artisans that surround the hotel. We were delighted in February 2015 to be written up by Olive magazine as ‘modern British hospitality at its relaxed – and romantic – best’. When we discovered the legend of the Wiltshire Moonrakers in an old book in the Trowbridge museum, we felt certain we had found a name befitting of a hotel that celebrates the history, food and folk law of the area.
