welcome As the leaves turn becoming vibrant paths underfoot, we look towards Christmas and Winter in this edition of A Local Life. This season is set to host both edible and musical feasts with concerts up at the Wiltshire Music Centre suitable for all ages and tastes, alongside a newly announced Ale and Cider Trail throughout Bradford on Avon. Our What’s On page is full of autumnal plays, talks, and fairs. Much anticipated is The Lady in the Van, performed by The Bradfordians. The opportunity to get Christmas shopping done early also presents itself with the Autumn Fair, and for those seeking more vintage gifts need look no further than the Auction Rooms, offering antiques, furniture and collectables. We have some tempting offers courtesy of Travel Options 4U if you wish to escape the town, the county, or even the country. Also featured is a tasty recipe from Lorraine Hare’s book ‘Bath’s Luscious Larder’, matched with local supplier Alice Boden of Mayfield Organics providing the source of independent and organic produce. Finally, let this be a season of positive change. Featuring health information on page 28 regarding therapies and exercises easily implemented into your daily life. Alongside this, before the cold weather truly sets in, check out the various bike shops of Bradford on Avon. Whether you’re after electric or traditional, get that exercise in before the hibernation period! Thanks from all of us at A Local Life, and remember to wrap up warm! A Local Life

ince 1997 Tim Williams has been teaching and encouraging water-colourists at his twice weekly classes at the Guides H.Q., Church Street, Bradford on Avon. Over the years, dozens of students have passed through his classes, enjoying the relaxed and stress free methods he uses to teach the art of watercolour. Tim himself was taught by London based watercolourist the late David Hutter, whose motto was, “ If you want to paint you can paint”. Tim has regular exhibitions both here in the U.K. and in the south west of France where he has a studio. The classes here in Bradford host people of all levels of experience and the teaching is hands on, with Tim helping and giving advice where needed, with his knowledge of colour mixing, perspective etc. Classes are held:

Going Through A Divorce? Then You Should

Definitely Consider Revising Your Will

James Trescothick-Martin, Associate Solicitor in the Private Client department of BLB Solicitors explains why.

W

hen a person marries, or enters into a Civil Partnership, any Will already in existence automatically becomes invalid. However the reverse does not happen when a couple divorces. Once a Decree Absolute (or Decree of Dissolution in the case of a Civil Partnership ) is granted your current Will, i.e. a Will made before your divorce, will still be valid. A spouse named in your current Will, will be treated as if they had died. This means that if they were named as an executor or Trustee this appointment will fail. Any gifts to them will also fail and either pass in accordance with the alternative provisions in

your Will or, if there aren’t any, by the Rules of Intestacy. However before the Decree Absolute or Decree of Dissolution is issued your Will remains in place in full. In a recent matter I dealt with, a couple were divorcing. They already had a Decree Nisi issued by the Court. Unfortunately before the Decree Absolute was granted, the husband died, leaving his previous Will in place. This Will left everything to his wife. This meant that, despite the financial settlement of the separation being agreed, she then inherited everything including savings and the marital home in full.

Contact us now to arrange an initial consultation James Trescothick-Martin info@blbsolicitors.co.uk

In this particular case, the wife immediately agreed to waive her rights to the estate and her estranged husband’s family agreed to a distribution of the Estate on the basis of the agreed financial settlement. However, there was nothing to stop her refusing to take just the agreed amount and walking away with the estate more or less intact. The moral of the story is that, perhaps even more so when children are involved, it is essential you receive advice not only on your separation and divorce but at the same time on your estate, to ensure your wishes are made clear.

in brief... Bradford on Avon and District Link LINK are celebrating 20 years of voluntary service in the local area with a Coffee Morning on Saturday 14th November at the United Reform Church; we hope to see many of our volunteers both past and present and welcome anyone who might be interested in helping in the future. Our main role within the community is to provide transport to and from medical appointments and other essential journeys for those who can no longer manage these things independently. We also offer company and support within the home. We are always looking for new drivers and coordinators to join our friendly team and would emphasise that the amount of time given is the volunteer’s choice.

Bradford on Avon Youth Forum - “What Matters To Youth” Your opportunity to tell us what matters to young people in the town and villages on a range of issues such as: Things to do, places to meet, available facilities and more. It will also be a chance to discuss the volunteering and employment opportunities in the town. Project funding available through the Bradford on Avon Local Youth Network and Bradford on Avon Area Board. For further information contact karen. butler@st-laurence.com 01225 309569 or emma. coombs@wiltshire.gov.uk 07768 980748. Wednesday 11 November 2015 at St Laurence School from 4pm.

Go electric After attending a Climate Friendly Bradford-on-Avon meeting, I was impressed with the enthusiasm of local residents for alternative forms of transport and energy. I would like to take this opportunity to share a few facts about the use of electric bikes: The cost of running an E bike is absurdly low, as they can now average 25-35 miles on a single charge. The charge cost is about 5p. This means that once the user has covered a distance of 5000 miles, the bike will have paid for itself in equivalent petrol cost. E bikes can make a big difference to carbon emissions. For example, for each 1000 residents who use an E bike for shopping and commuting, assuming an average distance of 50 miles per week, 50,000 gallons of fuel would be saved per year. This would go a long way in reducing Bradford’s carbon footprint, and would make the town a lot more pedestrian friendly. Last but not least are the significant health benefits to cycling over driving, as few calories are lost while motoring down a dual carriageway eating a packet of biscuits! Cliff Yuill, The Electric Bike Shop, Market Street, Bradford-on-Avon. 12

HOUSE & HOME

Nothing To Fear From Moving Home “Traumatic” is how most people react to moving home. For Mr & Mrs J. of Bradford on Avon, “it resembles the sinking of the Titanic. Hazards ahead are obvious to everyone, but there are dangers out of sight which impose continuous horror”. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing clients happy in their new surrounds, although not many are as dramatic as this would-be poet: “Let me like Pope, the poet’s mount ascend, you were my guide, philosopher and friend. And, in removal’s bog about to sink, delivered me from doom, despair and drink.” Come moving day, some clients are happy to be involved, some not. One couple went on a cruise and returned to their new home to find beds made and everything put away. Another sat on her balcony with a good book and a bottle of wine! Trauma? What trauma? You can catch up with other testimonials at www.tailormaderelocation.co.uk and learn how we help older homeowners find and relocate from one home to the next. WILTSHIRE MUSIC

A New Season

A New Youth Orchestra Autumn Winter 2015 Concert Season

S

eptember proved to be an exceptionally exciting month at Wiltshire Music Centre with the official take-over of two Youth Orchestras and the start of a new Autumn Winter concert season. The Centre celebrated securing the future of the Wiltshire & Swindon Youth Orchestra and Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra following the reorganisation of Wiltshire Music Service, with plans already underway to expand the symphony orchestra into a bigger, regional Orchestra for more young people. Clare Jack, Executive Director said ‘we are entering a new era managing the Youth Orchestra which has now been running for over 50 years. It is a hugely important resource for young musicians who have the opportunity to be part of a 70 member orchestra with a professional conductor in a professional concert hall. We are delighted to have secured its future, and it marks a very special start to our Autumn Winter Season.’

Children’s Oral Health Keep your children’s oral health on track with these pointers

The diet plays an important part in children’s oral health. Everyone knows that sugar is detrimental but there are also other dangers including acidic foods e.g. fruit juice or fizzy drinks both of which can erode tooth enamel. Sticky foods are hard to dislodge from the tooth surface so remaining a risk for longer. We know children should follow a balanced diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, avoiding sugary food wherever possible. But watch out for hidden sugars. Processed foods e.g. sweetened yoghurt can contain more than you think.

Cleaning It is recommended that children clean their teeth twice a day for two minutes. The latest advice is that this should be before breakfast and last thing at night, using an appropriately sized toothbrush for their age and a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. All tooth surfaces should be cleaned with small circular

movements. This includes the front, back and biting surfaces of each tooth - not forgetting the gum line. Children will not have the manual dexterity to do this unaided until an average age of seven, so we suggest the parent or guardian may have to do this for them. It is important that your child attends regular routine dental examinations from an early age. This will allow the child to get used to the procedure and let the dentist check both the development and health of the teeth. The bite is assessed in case braces could be needed. The Dutch Barton Dental Practice is always happy to welcome new patients and children’s routine check-ups are free if their parent or guardian is registered with us. SHOPPING

National Consumer Week: “Know your Rights” From the 1st October new regulations came into force called the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The legislation includes provisions such as the absolute right to reject faulty goods within the first 30 days of purchase and also includes provisions for digital purchases. Trading Standards want all traders on board because widespread compliance marginalises the less ethical trader and should create an even playing field, and a healthy economy too. Full details of the obligations traders have are available from the trading standards website: www.businesscompanion.info. Trading standards also invite compliant businesses with a good reputation to apply for Trading Standards Approval by joining the Buy with Confidence Scheme. There is a cost to membership but this is kept low. For more info see www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk To obtain the details of your rights as a consumer, visit the Citizens Advice Consumer Website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk

Local, organic - seasonal fruit and veg Earlier this year, Alice Boden’s fruit and veg delivery service, Bodice of Holt transformed like a beautiful, determined butterfly in to Mayfield Organics. This independent, family run business first spread its wings in 2012, borne out of a passion to connect with other like-minded suppliers to provide local, organic and seasonal fruit and veg to the community. “ It’s all about making small growers produce accessible to our customers. We hope that by offering tailor-made fruit and veg crates coupled with our personable service, we can help people save money, get creative and improve their diet by eating seasonally and organically. It’s convenience with a conscience!” Alice believes her bespoke service offering up local and seasonal produce, is key to nurturing more sustainable and mindful communities. With fewer pesticides, produce being picked at it’s prime and the Mayfield team doing the leg work for you, it’s a great way to make small changes which in the end, result in a big positive impact on our own health and that of the environments. Along with the re-branding of the business, come some other additions like inspiring recipe cards from in house chef Beth of Beth’s Bakes and some exciting catering events being prepared for 2016. HEALTH FEATURE

Positive Change Getting the balance right!

W

e are all looking to improve our health, often small changes to our lifestyle will bring massive improvements. Most people can benefit from natural or complementary therapies available to all ages from birth to end of life. Whether you are suffering from back pain or other aches and pains, have an existing condition or are in need of stress relief, there are countless therapies to support you.

Feldenkrais proposed that for survival, locomotion, and adjustment to the environment, humans had the potential, in both mind and body, to move with freedom in any direction without hesitation, preparation, or complusion. And that we had within us, if so desired or valued, the capacity to learn to move more easily and comfortably, to develop the innate agility and stamina of body and mind, and to improve the quality of our life.

Here we have just a few of the local practitioners that could inspire a different approach to your health and wellbeing with courses, therapies and treatments. See adverts for further details.

The method uses two complementary techniques: Awareness Through Movement group sessions; and Functional Integration one-to-one sessions. Both involve the mindful exploration of movement in a way that evokes change in the patterns of activity between the nervous, muscular and skeletal systems which can help participants:

FELDENKRAIS METHOD Using movement in specific and novel ways, participants learn to (re) discover and develop their ability to do the activities they want, need or love to do. The method was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais D.Sc (1904-1984), scientist, athlete, judo master and educator, as he sought to adjust to life changes and to restore his functional abilities in daily life following a series of serious injuries. 28

•• recover from or adjust to injury, illness, or life changes e.g. pregnancy, ageing •• improve posture, breathing, vitality and general wellbeing •• improve performance in a specific activity e.g. sports, performing arts or work activities www.alocallife.co.uk

•• release of habitual patterns of tension and stress Rona had an established career in public health i.e. immunology, epidemiology and health research, and latterly health service management. At age 40, Rona tried a Feldenkrais class and experienced a deep sense of ‘coming home’ calmness and grounded-ness often associated with deep meditation which inspired her to train as a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Rona is also an experienced Buddhist meditation instructor and teacher. Rona Wyatt CFP, MEdPsych, MPH Registered Feldenkrais Practitioner 07796 210714

KETTLEBELLS Kettlebells are cannonball-like weights with thick handles and can be said to be “a gym in the palm of your hand”. Over the last few years they’ve gradually become mainstream and recognised for their incredible versatility in cardio and strength workouts. This functional fitness of the ‘bell’ has taken over from pointless muscle isolation

exercises of fixed multi-gym machines. Kettlebells are all about working muscle chains to combine efforts in moving these free weights around in both dynamic moves and slow grinds. The application of gains is obvious in all physical sports. They can also be used for rehab, especially the back (under supervision of course)! Best of all, kettlebells are versatile. They’re ideal for explosive exercises that work major muscles, burn body fat, and build power, but they also add a new dimension to classic moves like chest presses and snatches. And you don’t need a wall-length rack of them to get a great workout. One pair will suffice for this routine. Use them regularly and you’ll see the body you’ve always wanted. Classes are held in Bradford on Avon on Thursday evenings 6.15pm at the Dance Hall, St Laurence school. Pete Hodkinson 07712 051837 www.kettlebell-fit.com

HOMEOPATHY With the imminent demise of antibiotics - one of the greatest discoveries of the last century we are left in a very vulnerable position. We have relied on them for too long and abused their use. Now most of them are ineffective and resistant. The bad news is there are no new ones in development. What is going to happen? The government has taken this so seriously that it was the subject recently of a COBRA emergency meeting. What is the solution? Well believe it or not homeopathy offers some hope. This is not wild speculation but based on experience over the last 200 years. Homeopathy, and its a matter of historical record, was brilliantly effective in treating cholera and scarlet fever epidemics for instance, and during the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918 homeopathic Drs recorded by far the lowest mortality rates. So how come it has been so successful? Its because it works from the other direction to allopathic medicine. Homeopathy gives a boost to the natural No45 Autumn 2015

defences of the immune system by mimicking the disease state. As simple as that. The immune system kicks in , raises a fever and recovery is quicker and safer. Don’t take just my word for it - look at how successfully it is used in India. It is part of the mainstream health system there and works very well in acute and chronic diseases. In a hospital in Mumbai you are equally likely to be treated for pneumonia by homeopathy by a Dr as with antibiotics. This is especially good news as these antibiotics are less and less effective.
