We highlight some superb local hotels and restaurants for summer wining and dining, as well as drawing attention to a new micro-brewery in Bradford on Avon. Riverford franchisees at Winsley are keen to deliver the freshest of fresh vegetables, meat and fish right to your door, along with some truly inventive recipes, while Demuths Cookery Courses are a fun way to add zest to cookery skills. Local entertainment abounds, including the Bradfordians production of Jane Austen’s Emma at the Tithe Barn, The Tempest in the gardens of Lacock Abbey, and an intriguing youth theatre production at St Margaret’s Hall. Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon 2006-2015

his year we celebrate ten years of action locally to mitigate the effects of climate change. Indeed, we are committed to Bradford being carbon neutral by 2050; almost 900 people have pledged their commitment to achieving this aim. Over the past decade Climate Friendly Bradford (CFB) has spread the message at scores of local meetings and events and launched a variety of initiatives.
In 2009 CFB was awarded a grant of £140,000 which enabled the installation of solar panels at Christchurch School and a hundred homes to be made more energy-efficient. In 2012 CFB was awarded £60,000 government funding towards more energyefficient homes. Actions included tree-planting at Barton Farm Country Park and the production of an Active Travel Map to advise people to walk,

Monkton Fairleigh Fête

onkton Fairleigh Manor provides a glorious setting for the very best of the local summer fêtes. By kind permission of Sir Charles and Lady Hobhouse, the front lawn of their early Georgian manor house - with magnificent views stretching across to the Vale of Pewsey - is open to visitors far and near. From welly wanging and plate smashing, to shying at coconuts and sipping a summer ‘Pimms’ cup it’s a topping afternoon of fun for all the family. Young visitors can ride on a mini steam train or in a goat carriage, inspect a tractor and combine harvester, bounce on a bouncy castle, and dip into the lucky dip. There’s a white elephant stall loaded with trash and treasures, stalls with books, plants, toys, bottles and even a stall for the ‘body beautiful’. An exceptional cream tea is served on the terrace. The proceedings are enlivened by the Salvation Army Band. Further entertainment is provided by the children of Churchfields Primary School who give an annual dancing display. Entry £1 (children go free) and there’s a goodly sized area for parking. Proceeds go to support the church.
BoA Neighbourhood Plan - Final Consultation
A
great deal of effort has been made in formulating a ten year plan for Bradford on Avon by the BoA Town Council. Residents; school pupils; businesses; the Neighbourhood Plan Team; the Topic Groups; the Bradford on Avon Photographic Group; and Andrew Eberlin on graphics have done sterling work. While the plan is admirable in its attention to detail on many subjects, recommendations on how to deal with the most pressing issues: parking provisions, traffic flow and a possible footbridge, are conspicuously sidestepped. It is important that residents and business owners who desire to live and work not only in a ‘perfect setting’, but in a vigorous and vibrant town, read through this document and complete the survey by voicing their opinions. ccording to the chairman of the Corsham Train Group Project, the station could re-opened as soon as 2019.
It almost happened a few years back. The monies and planning had been rubber stamped, but the rail industry withdrew the only type of train that could have stopped there. However, now that selective door opening is available, the expense of a full length platform could be spared.

Curator, Roger Clark has also created numerous themed displays which tell the story of our town from pre-Roman times. The need for a station might also be speeded up since Corsham has been selected for a £40m Ministry of Defence cyber security hub. MP Michelle Donelan, who has been an active supporter of the process commented, “On top of the MOD news, we have a strong economic case here and there is a lot of goodwill behind this project. It is costly, time consuming, but very worthwhile.” A Wiltshire Council study suggests that the station could carry up to 400,000 passengers a year. It tested four options: Bristol Temple Meads to Swindon; Bristol Temple Meads to Oxford; Cardiff Central to Swindon; and an extension of the MetroWest service from Bath Spa to Chippenham. 61 years after the station closed, momentum is definitely building.
Fracking - The Battle Continues

hree anti-fracking campaigners, including hunger striker Gazyer Frackman from Blackpool, served a legal notice on the Prime Minister with regard to the risks and harms of fracking on health, the environment and climate. They also delivered a detailed report which recommends that the government abandon its pro-fracking policy in the light of these issues - to both David Cameron and to all MPs: http://www.medact.org/ resources/health-fracking-report/ Gayzer Frackman, whose house was damaged by fracking-induced earthquakes near Blackpool in 2011, had been on hunger strike for several weeks outside Downing Street in an effort to make the Prime Minister address the dangers this process presents to water tables, farmland, food and even to the climate. His ultimate aim is a total ban on fracking. Gayzer explained ‘...this Government is blind to science, democracy and the public interest. Cameron has said he is going to make Blackpool the shale capital of Europe. It is clear that he intends to impose fracking on communities throughout the UK without a care for the known risks and widespread opposition to it. Box Hill & the Hazelbury Estate Introducing walks with your four legged friend, specially researched from the books ‘A Dog Walkers Guide’.

rom Box Hill Common the first highlight is an area of ancient woodland, whose pitted ground is evidence of a stonemining past. Beyond the tree cover, the path emerges onto open ground with a fine view across the By Brook Valley and Box to Colerne on the distant hilltop. More woodland follows – watch out for the pigs running free here – before the walk reaches Hazelbury Common. An oasis of natural grassland, this common is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna; 31 species of butterfly have been recorded on the common including Clouded Yellow, Small Blue and Comma. A rather grand driveway brings the route to Hazelbury Manor, whose most spectacular features are the hall bay and the two-storey porch, before open fields return the walk to Box Hill. Terrain A mix of field margins, enclosed footpaths and wide tracks. There is one ascent along the way but it is far from challenging.
Where to park There are parking spaces on the edge of Box Hill Common (GR: 834693). Map: OS Explorer 156 Chippenham & Bradford on Avon. How to get there Leave the A365 Box to Melksham road at Fiveways Junction, 1 mile from Box, and follow the B3109 towards Corsham. In 1 mile, turn left into White Ennox Lane. In 600 yards, at a crossroads by Tunnel Inn, turn left and drive for 350 yards to a junction by a small green. Turn right at this junction to reach Box Hill Common in 50 yards. Refreshments The Quarrymans Arms on Box Hill, almost at the end of the walk, welcomes dogs in its bar area. To Bradford on Avon
1 Walk back to the junction and follow the road that runs to the right of the green. Cross the road and follow a bridleway into woodland, keeping left at an early fork. Follow the path along the edge of the woodland for 350 yards until it bears left out of the tree cover. In a few steps, at junction, take the path on the right that runs along the edge of the hilltop, down to the village of Box. In 350 yards, at a junction just past the end of a wall, follow the track to the left. Drop down to a crossroads in 300 yards before following the track opposite that climbs uphill to reach Hazelbury Common in Âź mile.
2 Turn left and walk up the left edge of the common to reach a driveway on the left leading to Hazelbury Manor, just before the B3109 road. Walk down the driveway and, in 500 yards, immediately past a pair of stone gateposts, turn right along an estate road. Pass a barn on the left in 200 yards before continuing for another 200 yards to a point where a footpath crosses the estate road. Turn left and walk across the middle of a field to a gap in a stone wall opposite.

3 Beyond this gap, turn left and walk along the edge of the next field for 350 yards before turning right to walk across the open field towards a copse opposite. Pass through a gate by this copse before following a road to the right to a crossroads by Tunnel Inn. Turn left and, in 40 yards by a property, turn left onto an enclosed footpath. Keeping right at a fork, follow this path for 200 yards until it emerges by some properties. Keep ahead on an access road to a fork by Sidan Cottage and veer right to emerge on the road in Box Hill by the Quarrymans Arms. Turn left back to the common.

reparations are well under way for the annual Bradford on Avon Arts Festival.
The theme: OUTER SPACE so expect some interesting, exciting and different events. From spaceship lanterns made from tissue paper to talks about how the Georgians viewed Outer Space. The festival will be launched June 18th when we invite you all to the Sculpture Garden held in the beautiful garden setting at the home of Glenys and George Lunt in Woolley Street. An inspiring exhibition of contemporary sculpture by local artists, with a few special guests from further afield. The main festival runs from 4th to 18th September with many opportunities to get involved whether you are poet, painter, or photographer. Here are a few highlights:

he BoA Sculpture Garden Exhibition has grown year on year to become a favourite fixture and precursor to the BoA Arts Festival. fter considerable success at last year’s festival, Small & Beautiful will be part of the BoA Arts Festival again in September. The exhibition of CDsized artwork will celebrate the beauty, creativity and diversity of Bradford on Avon and its wealth of creative artists.
Artists are invited to donate original artworks. Any medium is acceptable provided it fits within a CD-jewel case (12cm x 12cm x 0.5cm). Alongside the Festival exhibition, all contributing artists will be listed on the Festival website and all artworks will be scanned to become part of a virtual exhibition accessible to a much wider audience. However, each work will be anonymous, signed only on the reverse side, and will remain anonymous until sold and distributed at the end of the Festival.
The exhibition will be held at The Weaving Shed, in the heart of Bradford on Avon.

eing offered a place at an Oxbridge university is an impressive achievement. Sam Watt and Lily Bayntun-Coward from Monkton Combe are hoping to take up offers to study Maths and Classics respectively at Cambridge, following A Level results in August. Since the age of two they have attended Monkton Pre-Prep, Prep School, Senior School and finally Sixth Form for GCSEs and A Levels. Not just a Will but also a List

I
have recently been assisting a friend whose husband, a man in his late fifties, sadly suddenly died. An avid rugby fan, loving father and husband, he was someone who lived his life to the full. He was described by many as living for today and in the moment. Of course there is nothing wrong with having a zest for life but, when he died, he unwittingly caused a major problem. He was unfortunately not one to keep records. He had no Will, no bank statements, no insurance details and no details of any of his assets. The loss of a loved one is always traumatic, and seldom easy to cope with, but what made this harder for his family was having no way of knowing what assets he had or where to find out all the information that is required to obtain a Grant of Probate.
Not only is it important to have a Will in place, it is also essential that your family and Executors know some basic details about your assets and liabilities, or even just know where to put their hands on the relevant information. I therefore suggest to my clients that they prepare a list of basic information just in case. The list should, amongst other things include: 1. Where your Will and Lasting Power of Attorney, if you have them, are stored; 2. The name of your solicitors, Financial Adviser and/or accountant; 3. Your bank name and account numbers (but not of course PIN numbers); 4. Details of any insurances, or similar products such as life insurance, car insurance,

buildings & contents insurance, funeral plans etc; 5. Your funeral wishes; and 6. Details of other assets you might own such as stocks and shares, investment plans or pensions. The list can even be kept, often for no extra cost, with your Will, but you must remember to update it periodically. A Talent to Amuse Up Close with Paul Weiland of Belcombe Court - Angela Clarence
P
aul Weiland is hailed as the UK’s most successful commercial director. Hamlet Cigars and the Walkers Crisps’ series with Gary Lineker are just two examples of a wry wit that delights both advertisers and audiences. Weiland’s knack for comedy has also made ‘millions laugh’ with his episodes of Mr Bean, Alias Smith and Jones and Blackadder Back and Forth, the final adventure in which Sir Edmund changes his destiny thanks to Baldrick’s miraculous Time Machine. Weiland has himself worked miracles with time in 36
restoring Belcombe Court from its seriously dilapidated state into an elegant and comfortable home with all mod cons. The original house was built in the 15th century and extended in the 18th century. When Paul and his wife first set eyes on it some 23 years ago, they were touched by its beauty and proportions, but “It needed everything - roof, electrics, plumbing, flooring and the garden was in a poor state. The challenge of eking out its hidden potential was irresistible. I’m a perfectionist, but I can also multi-task doing ten things at once. I was invisible yet again.” Weiland has received a raft of awards for commercials, a BAFTA for his Storyteller – The Ravens, an Emmy for Living with Dinosaurs and last year was presented with an OBE, “The cherry on a career cake.” Meanwhile, he and his company Contagious London are still busy making commercials and he has a TV project on the bubble with producer Stephen Garrett who No49 June/July 2016
has just come off The Night Manager. His Hollywood movies City Slickers II and Made of Honour are shown repeatedly. As a founder member of Comic Relief and director of some 50 films for charity, many owe him a deep debt of thanks, and millions across the globe are still laughing at Mr Bean. For a lad who left school at 16 with no qualifications and started his career as a messenger boy, Weiland’s inimitable creativity and his admirable quest for “maintaining a balance in life” have truly served him well.

Learning how to make Andalucian Tapas at Demuth’s award winning Cookery School was as therapeutic as a mini-break and left me on a culinary high. Cool zinc surfaces, tall ceilings and Georgian sash windows engender a feeling of lightness and relaxation. Rachel Demuth herself is authoritative yet soothing. “I always start the courses by making bread. It gets the group doing something right away. Kneading always helps everyone relax.” The very antithesis of a fire breathing TV chef, Rachel has been imbuing students with gastronomic wisdom for twenty years. “People come to us to improve their diet and way of life. They make dishes that they wouldn’t normally think of attempting, and we give them the confidence to go home and experiment.” She travels extensively adding innovative recipes and ingredients to her repertoire. Her alumni are drawn from all over the world. I made Empanadillas (Spanish mini pasties) with Ceri from Wales. Alongside Kristina from Hungary we taste tested everyone’s Romesco Sauce - a scrumptious dip of roasted red pepper, blended with almonds and garlic. Yum! We made individual loaves of Spanish Semolina Bread to take home; learnt how to make Salmarejo, a rich tomato soup; a Tortilla de Patatas; Paella de Primavera with seasonal veggies which rivalled anything I’ve tasted in Andalucia; and I’m hoping

Riverford Organic Recipe Boxes – What’s not to like?

uy Watson started by delivering vegetables to friends in Devon. Having elevated the veg box concept to a whole new level, it’s a service that adapts to singles, large families, career couples, convalescents and holidaymakers. And then there are the ‘Recipe Boxes’. Local franchisees Alan and Vicki from Limpley Stoke cover Bath and the surrounding area. Last bank holiday, Alan turned up with a box bursting
with goodness and vitality (no more than two days from farm to delivery). Luscious veggies, little pots of pungent spices, dairy products in a cool bag, and three surprisingly inventive recipes with easy to follow instructions. My onion pakoras were the best I’ve ever tasted - bite sized, fluffy and a perfect accompaniment to the Beetroot and Mushroom Curry, an unusual combination that was totally delicious and that I shall make again and again.
The Aubergine Involtini - a super sophisticated stuffed aubergine was another hit. In this era of processed food and long working hours, Riverford’s concept of high quality, local merchandise delivered to your door, coupled with healthy recipes that tickle your taste buds, is a bit of a revelation.

U
nseen and unsung volunteers are busy crisscrossing the countryside out of hours often making a difference between life and death. Blood Bike volunteers provide an emergency courier service carrying blood, breast milk, surgical tools, lab results, X-rays and patient records to wherever they are needed.
“We ride to play our part in saving peoples’ lives to save the NHS money - but more than anything else we ride because we love it.” Freewheelers EVS, the group covering Somerset, Bristol, Bath, West Wiltshire and the South Gloucestershire area, have been operating since 1990 and handle around 3,500 calls a year. In 2008 they received The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. Last summer they also began a partnership with Great Western Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance services delivering fresh whole bloods nightly. The unused supplies back to the blood bank in the morning. Staffed wholly by unpaid volunteers, they rely entirely on
the support of public donations and corporate sponsorship. Without them, hospitals would be forced to use taxis or commercial couriers. Freewheelers EVS alone save the NHS more than £250,000 a year. Watch out for their members fundraising at bike shows, street fairs, summer fêtes, supermarkets and other community events. n an age of cutbacks, the Wiltshire & Swindon Combined Fire Service has merged with Dorset to become the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority. Despite the savings achieved, Wiltshire Council Tax payers experienced a 7.4% rise in their contribution. However, this turns out to be a one-off payment imposed by the government to achieve parity with Dorset. Meanwhile, the Bradford on Avon station is eager to hear from anyone interested in volunteering to become retained firefighters. This part-time position involves fighting fires, dealing with floods, road traffic collisions, chemical spills, animal rescues, and promoting fire safety messages. BoA station also supports the ambulance service by attending medical emergencies before the paramedics arrive. 52
A retained firefighter receives full training, commits to being available at particular times, and is paid for time served. When a pocket alerter is activated, you have just five minutes to report to the fire station and mobilise. t’s all change in the Shambles as erstwhile French baker Gilles moves into the Grumpy Badger Café bringing with him another touch of Gallic sophistication. ‘In or Out’, we’ll no doubt be dipping freshly baked croissants into fragrant bowls of coffee soon. Caroline at Tillions is keeping shtum as to who’s taking over her property. In the meantime, goods are flying of the shelves as customers stock up on glass, china, and kitchenware. Better be quick if you want a lemon zester, a bit of royal Worcester or a Rugby mug. I snapped up the very last spiralizer. Overheard in the Shambles: “A sex shop’s coming next door the pet shop. That’ll be ideal for ‘Brideford’ on Avon!” Sorry to disappoint. Rumour has it that a year-round Christmas shop will be twinkling there soon. Talking of passion, what about a dating service? One mature resident reports that while the internet is as busy hooking up baby boomers as millennials, the road to romance can be bumpy for over 50’s on the web. For more reliable personal introductions,
you have to try Bath’s exclusive agencies…for now. Meanwhile, it’s been rumoured that Sebastien’s is closing. Not so, it’s just that they are not exactly ‘open all hours’. Their new bi-monthly themed tasting evenings from around the world is stimulating taste buds, though. From Provençal to Pondicherry you get 4 mouth-watering courses for just £29.50. Still grieving that Waitrose passed on taking over Budgen’s? At least the Co-op is Fairtrade, but it’s unlikely they’ll have room to incorporate a butcher and fish counter. All we know is that the friendly staff are staying put. Hope they’ll be better at keeping shelves stocked than the delightfully chaotic store on the Winsley Road! BoA car parks are rumoured to be reverting back to the administration of the town council. A perfect opportunity to relocate all-day permits - sold to commuters and Mod workers - to Bailey’s Barn which would release spaces for shoppers and tourists. With 400 interested buyers already on their database, Kingston Farm developers have made a video declaring the development is “set within walking distance of the mainline station and town centre”. Hmmm. I guess the new footpath down through Kingston Mills will help. See the vid: http://bit.ly/259j8ME Thanks to the enterprising Jacquie at Piha, Saturday markets are coming to Lamb’s Yard. Alternating weekly themes to include Local Charities; Local Artisans; Clubs of BoA; Entertainment and Theatre; with a ‘Surprise’ on any 5th Saturdays. The hugely successful Café Grounded will be moving into the site next to The Weaving Shed to create a triumvirate of eateries overlooking the river. This chain of comfy, affordable, all day dining, family friendly, chain of café bars have proved a huge hit in Bristol, Bath and Corsham and will no doubt prove to be a favourite in BoA.
