welcome Firstly I’d like to thank the community for their amazing support with this edition where we’ve had so much content to consider for publication. It shows the magazine is being recognised and valued even though we are still quite new. Many thanks for that support and engagement. Highlights in this edition include an interview with Adam Henson, farmer and presenter of Countryfile, who visited Wiltshire to talk about his life and the future of farming and the Emergency Services Show, hoping to be even bigger this year! You will also find details of the new work in the community being done this year by local charity HEALS, the exciting news that free parking is coming to the town as well as many other community events. Our What’s On section is growing so please upload your events directly online if you are organising an activity in the area and wish to spread the word. As usual I would also like to highlight the work of everyone who help bring this magazine to life — particularly professional photographer Sabine Coe and young writer Sam Dunne, a student at Malmesbury School who is being proactive in her desire to follow a career in the media, the team at Local Life would like to wish her every success. home library service Members of the community who are no longer able to visit their local libraries are being asked to consider using the home library service.

This service is for Wiltshire residents who want to continue reading or listening to books but are unable to visit the library and have no-one to collect items on their behalf. They might be disabled, blind or partially sighted, suffering from a long illness or elderly and frail.

Show Returns…

ver £30,000 has been donated to local causes following the recordbreaking success of the 2014 Emergency Services Show. The show returns this year on Sunday September 13 at Hullavington with multiple attractions including the opportunity to ride in a police car and a fire engine. Tickets are now available online and are priced at £6.50 for adults, £3.50 for children aged three to 15 and under-threes get free entry. After last year’s show 21 organisations received cheques from the organising committee which is made up of volunteers from Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service and South Western Ambulance Service. Donations were made to groups that support the work of the emergency services; however, there were also donations to local organisations that support the Show itself.

Free parking in town

almesbury Town Council and Malmesbury Town Team have launched free parking for two hours in the town’s Station Road Car Park from end of July. The two organisations have come together to subsidise Wiltshire Council's parking revenues for a 12 month trial. They hope the move will encourage shoppers, visitors and residents to make

more use of the Station Road Car Park and attract them to the town centre. A free ticket will be issued by the ticket machines and must still be displayed. Charges for longer periods will not change. Mayor, Cllr John Gundry, said "The Town Council welcomes the opportunity to subsidise parking for the benefit of the residents, workers, visitors

Local charity takes on

new challenges to help those in need

EALS team of volunteers who support people in need in the community are expanding their work over the coming months. Highlight is the publication of a cookbook, written by nutritional expert Dr Eva Detko, who lives in Wiltshire. It will include recipes for meals which are nutritional, low cost and easily accessible for people of all abilities. Called the Healthy Eating & Life Skills Cook Book, it will offer starters, snacks, main meals and desserts which are weight loss friendly and suitable for those with allergies.

The HEALS office in the High Street has also become home to a new credit union, catering for people in and around the town. It will be part of the North Wiltshire & Kennet Credit Union and the first time people in Malmesbury have had access to this type of service on their doorsteps. The aim is to offer safe lending for people in the community as well as encouraging saving, however little someone can afford to save. The team at HEALS will also be working with the Wiltshire Youth Service to see what can be done to provide a programme of activities for young people in and around the town. New Campus Excitement is building at Wiltshire College as the new £21million Chippenham campus gets nearer to completion. In just over one months’ time, the ground floor of the Engineering, Motor Vehicle and Carpentry block will be handed over with students being able to start their practical workshops immediately. The remainder of the campus, which is being constructed by Willmott Dixon, will open

The new campus will be heated by ground source heat pumps with much of the electricity being provided via solar panels mounted on the roof. It also boasts an amphitheatre which is surrounded by the sports field. Work is currently underway on the car park, with the hard core from the former engineering block being reused for the foundations. State-of-the-art hair and beauty salons are being fitted out next week as well as the filling in of the pond. The new facilities will have the latest equipment and industry standard workshops for technical and professional study

shares his stories with Wiltshire audience

dam Henson, the 48-year-old presenter of popular BBC TV series Countryfile and Lambing Live, was in Wiltshire recently talking to a packed audience about his life as a farmer and a TV personality. He’d been invited to be guest speaker at an event organised by the Wiltshire Heights Care Home in Bradford on Avon and to support a new local charity – Hub@BA15 which aims to help those in need in the community. Guests queued outside in order to meet Adam, who works a 1,200-acre farm near Cheltenham – his farm is now famous for rare breeds and it’s open to the public as Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park – for more information see www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk

Childhood Adam talked about having a privileged childhood brought up on a farm with his sister and being able to live a free and abundant life in rural Gloucestershire. However the ability to entertain also runs through the family as Adam’s grandfather Leslie Henson was a well known actor and comedian, especially during WW2, and his uncle Nicky Henson is also an accomplished actor. Adam was clearly most in awe of his father Joe, who only ever wanted to farm and who inspired him to do whatever he wished in life. Adam always knew, wherever life took him – he would always come home to be a farmer. “My dad was my hero and my mentor,” he said. “He was so No3 Summer 2015

exciting and so entrepreneurial, he saw opportunities where others saw problems.” One of those opportunities was the drive to keep rare breeds of farm animals when they fell out of fashion, or didn’t suit the emerging farms where goods needed to be mass produced in the 1950s and 1960s. This vision means that today Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park is the oldest of its kind in the UK – first opening its doors to the public in 1973. Adam went to local schools and then agricultural college before 19

UP CLOSE to the farm, its success is actually down to teamwork. He particularly singled out his friend and now business partner Duncan Andrews. Duncan and Adam studied together and went their separate ways but always stayed in touch. On a visit to Duncan – where Adam had arrived to sheer his own rare breed sheep – Adam asked Duncan if he would come into his farm to help him run the business side of things. Duncan did and later came into the business with Adam.

The farm park itself attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, has a restaurant and its own camping and caravan site. The caravan site has 40 grass pitches, 16 with electrical hook-up and costs from £14.35 a night. Visitors to the farm park, can many rare breeds and can interact with the animals from feeding through to handling new born chicks. Some of the animals have also been used in films including oxen in Braveheart and one of Adam’s rams was used in Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe.

taking time to travel the world, partly funded by working on farms in different countries. He then came home to join the family business and became the third generation tenant farmer on land at Guiting Power, near Bourton on the Water. Adam now lives in the main farm house with his partner and their two children Ella, aged 16 and Alfie, 12. Today at Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park Adam talked about the fact that although his name is attached 20

Today the farm has the most modern equipment available to ensure the farm is sustainable in the future and embraces conservation. The giant machinery used to harvest, plant and care for the land is all run via a satellite navigation system so that fertilisers are distributed efficiently, the make-up of the soil is mapped accurately and land is ploughed accurately ensuring fuel efficiency and cost savings. The Television Personality Adam told the audience how his own father Joe had often been featured on television so he grew up used to seeing a camera crew around the farm. Joe was a regular with Angela Rippon on a show called In The Country and he also appeared with Johnny Morris on Animal Magic. Then some years ago, Adam’s partner who works herself in television, suggested he applied for a position as a presenter on Countryfile, as the BBC were looking for new talent. He did – and got the job. Since then he’s travelled the country meeting interesting people and visiting beautiful places to find out about rural life across the UK. Now he

films largely at home with two self-shooting directors talking about day-to-day life and issues on the farm. More recently he became involved in Lambing Live with Kate Humble – an idea which Adam didn’t believe would ever catch on. He didn’t think watching lambing night after night would hold an audience. However the programme has proved immensely popular. Adam talked about loving his work in television and singled out John Craven and Kate Humble for particular praise. John Craven for being a genuine, professional presenter who told life ‘as it was’ during a difficult time for farming when the industry was besieged by problems such as the ‘egg crisis’ and ‘foot and mouth’. Kate Humble, Adam said, was the queen of live television, able to move seamlessly from shot to shot even if everything was being filmed in real time. As for the future of farming, Adam said he believed farming was now on the crest of a wave and should be positive about the future. He talked of wanting to encourage young people into the industry - even if, like him, it might not be possible to actually buy a farm or own land. He said people’s growing need to know

the history of the food they eat, the ethics of how animals are treated and the movement towards more locally produced and sourced food – all made it an exciting time to be part of the farming industry. The hotel, which was formerly the village’s rectory, has been run by the Young family since the mid 1980s. In recent months, the running of the hotel has been taken over by Alix Young and her husband Tim Baldwin. Former owner Francis Young has retired and moved overseas while Alix’s mum Anne is still managing director in the business and oversees the gardens, grounds and vineyard.

Alix said: “We don’t cater for larger weddings or evening events. We are very good at catering for those people who want a smaller wedding or celebration in a luxurious setting with good food and friends around them. Sometimes it’s a second marriage, a blessing or someone who needs to get married at the last minute such as a military couple or someone who’s suddenly got a job far away.”

new Malmesbury Artisan and Farmers Market has returned to the Market Cross every Friday between 9am and 3pm. The market has been the work of Malmesbury’s Town team and it’s hoped the weekly event will help to connect people and traders in the town’s rural economy. On offer is an array of local, fresh, organic and artisan products. Initially there will be ten stalls with the potential to grow to 15 and beyond. reen tea has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years to treat everything from headaches to depression. Drinking Green tea is thought to boost weight loss, reduce cholesterol, combat cardiovascular disease, prevent cancer and Alzheimer's disease. pizza Makes 1 BIG pizza Tip

“There is nothing like good pizza. I find that the best ones tend to

be the simplest, with not too many ingredients on top, and a good tomato passata as the base. When making a pizza it’s important to be sure that it cooks from the bottom as well as on top. A hot pizza stone helps with this, or you can use a heated baking sheet. If you don’t do this you will have uncooked dough with a soggy base.

RECIPE METHOD

4. Knock back the dough, then let it rise again for a further 40 minutes.

1 hour, plus rising 1. For stage 1 of the dough, put the flour and yeast into a large bowl and mix in the water. Leave in a warm place (35–40°C) for 15–20 minutes until frothy. 2. Add all the ingredients for stage 2 and mix together to a dough using a wooden spoon and then your hands. Turn out on to a floured surface and knead for 10–15 minutes to develop the elasticity of the dough..5 3. Shape the dough into a ball and rub with olive oil to prevent a crust from forming. Place in a clean bowl, cover the bowl with a towel and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.

5. When you are ready to make the pizza, preheat the oven to 250°C, and put a pizza stone or a large baking sheet in to heat. Turn the dough on to a lightly floured work surface and roll out into a rough rectangle or other shape that is about 2cm thick. Lift on to a large, semolina-dusted baking sheet. 6. For the topping, spread the passata evenly over the pizza base to within 1cm of the edge. Add the remaining topping ingredients, scattering them evenly, then drizzle the olive oil over all. 7. Slide the pizza on to the hot baking stone or baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes. Serve hot.

Nite riders We were asked to take part in an inaugural event there, the NiteRace, which covered 30 laps on a section of the Monaco Formula 1 race track. Many local residents, charity-minded, or yacht involved cyclists took part and we invited a father and son team, Steve (55) and Zeb Kyffin (17) to bring their Moulton bikes down from Newcastle to take part. They performed impressively, lining up alongside 100 big-wheeled racing bikes. Zeb has only just become a category 3 cyclist, but he cycled his heart out and was only ever overtaken by the Pro-rider on the race. His father was only 5 seconds a lap slower than him and together they did a fantastic job flying the flag! The prize-goody bag given to every participant included free tickets to the LikeBike show (featuring unique bicycles from around the world) held the following weekend, so many visiting us on the stand already knew from personal experience just how fast a Moulton can be ridden! The LikeBike show took place at the prime Monaco waterfront location, the Grimaldi Forum. Prince Albert of Monaco made a kind and supportive video-taped message for us all, welcoming us to these inaugural cycling events held in the Principality.

Hand-built here in the heart of Bradford on Avon it’s a pleasure to see our bicycles being ridden at new events and in April we were happy to accept an out-of-the-blue invitation from Monaco.

As icing on the cake, we were also allowed to have a stainless steel Moulton on show for ten days at the Monaco Yacht Club, which was a rare coup and kind gesture on the Club's part. At the same time, Tomo-san, our friend from Cyclograph magazine took photos and video of the Kyffins both racing and touring on Moultons, which hopefully will feature in pages of a popular Japanese cycling magazine, another way of spreading the word about Bradford on Avon’s Moulton bicycles far and wide!
