welcome Welcome to the February/March issue. The weather has been kind to Wiltshire - so far, and daffodils remind us that both Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are close. 2016 being a leap year suggests that Recipes for Lovers and Mothers’ might help nudge romance - after all, love is not just for the young… Arts events abound as The Independent Literature Festival in Bath showcases a profusion of literary talent. We have interviews with three participants, including Jamie Cullum, Comedian Isy Suttie, and Pub Landlord Al Murray who celebrates the continuing vigour of REAL pubs, of which we are lucky to have many in the area. A new season at the Wiltshire Music Centre has something for everyone with Mozart, Mahler and live screenings from Covent Garden; Jazz, Funk, World Music and Modern Dance; and two whizz bang special events for children: Wonderland, a family concert and My Science Fair activity day. Check special discounts for children and those under-26. Don’t forget to peruse What’s On to take advantage of loads more activities and events. Clean for the Queen is a new initiative to de-litter Britain, including getting fly-tipping sites removed by professionals. Find resources and info from Wiltshire Council at: http://bit.ly/1njBUA6. Meanwhile, Richard Craft from Climate Friendly BOA encourages us to find out about Fracking. Indeed. Licenses have been granted on our doorstep and fracking is unlikely to leave our countryside squeaky clean. On a lighter note there are some interesting ideas for sprucing up your home; and Slice of Life returns – please contribute your thoughts on life in the area, we’d love to hear from you. Looking forward to the Spring-Easter issue… all

Advanced Decisions - The Formal Way of Expressing Your Wishes James Trescothick-Martin, Associate Solicitor in the Private Client team at BLB Solicitors in Bradford on Avon, looks at the importance of planning ahead and making decisions about your future medical care.

U

nfortunately nowadays people increasingly find themselves in a situation where they, or someone they love faces a difficult decision with regards to the receipt of, or continued receipt of, life sustaining treatment. The simplest way to think about this is somebody on a “life support machine. However, what happens when that person is no longer able to make decisions about their future medical care? What do you do when, as the closest family member or the next of kin, you are asked what should happen next? Recognising that not everybody would necessarily want to have in place a Lasting Power of Attorney

for Health & Welfare, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 gave a statutory footing to the common law with regards to Advance Directives or, as they are sometimes referred to, Living Wills. The Act allows a person to state that in the circumstances specified in the Advanced Directive that they refuse specific medical treatment. This Directive then would be applied if they lacked capacity to consent to the carrying out, or continuation of, the treatment identified. It may be slightly confusing, but the decision can only extend to the refusal of treatment and cannot stipulate that treatment must be started or should continue. As with other proxy decisions such as the appointment of an

Attorney, the person giving the direction must be over 18 and have the legal capacity to give it. As always it is best to obtain full, professional legal advice and to instruct a solicitor to draft your Advanced Directive on your behalf. They would also be able to confirm your capacity at the time of executing your Living Will, if it ever became an issue. you have any queries or questions about Advanced Directives and Living Wills, or Lasting Powers of Attorney, either for Health & Welfare, or for Property & Financial Affairs please contact me and I will be more than happy to assist you.

On The Buses

T

he public are being invited to have their say on subsidised bus services in Wiltshire, which account for half the bus mileage in the county, at a cost of £5.1 million a year.

Wiltshire Council is looking into how to make several million pounds of savings over the next three years and their ‘Bus Service Consultation’ forms part of their research. “We are committed to minimising any impact changes might have, especially on vulnerable people including those who are elderly, disabled and young. We really do want to hear from people who could be affected by any changes to the current services and we will be doing everything we can to act on those comments.” The Minister for Transport has expressed concern, but stated: ”…due to the pressures on local authority spending, we are under severe pressure to reduce the amount of budget we spend on subsidizing public transport…” Make your voice heard by picking up a form at council offices, libraries and on some buses; call 0300 456 0100 for a postal copy; or post comments online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/subsidised-busservicesconsultation until April 4. Speak up - and use them or lose them!

Expansion and transformation at Monkton Prep School

B

ig things are happening at Monkton Prep as the school embarks on an ambitious programme of expansion and transformation. Construction is well underway on a new £4.4 million development which will bring together Monkton’s Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep and provide enhanced teaching and learning facilities for all divisions of the school. Demand for places at Monkton Prep has been growing and the new building, which is scheduled to open in Autumn this year, will accommodate additional places whilst enabling the school to maintain small class sizes alongside inspiring play and woodland areas, an upgraded swimming pool and sports facilities, and extensive parking. A new school bus service has just been launched and the Pre-Prep has started a new breakfast club running every morning from 7.45am with after school care running until 6.00pm. The start of the new development follows the school being recognised as an exceptional Early Years care provider when it was recently awarded the Bristol Standard, ‘gold standard’ accreditation from Bristol City Council which recognises continuous quality improvement. Monkton Prep was also acknowledged as ‘outstanding’ in a recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection report. www.monktoncombeschool.com

Letters from the Sea 1900 : a young man’s journey March 11, 2016 – Upper Masonic Hall, Bradford at 7.30pm

I

n June 1900, Maurice Ewbank, then aged 15, sailed from Liverpool on the merchant ship Senator. Six months later he was in Wei Hai Wei in China. Why he gave up a comfortable life in a country rectory, surrounded by a loving family, to endure a hard, rough-and-ready life on board ship we will never know with certainty. But we do have the evocative and poignant letters which he wrote home, letters which made their way back across the oceans to rural Cumberland. They paint a picture of a gruelling life and homesickness, but also show a young man interested and excited by the sights and sounds of his voyage, and of Wei Hai Wei, bustling with sailors, troops and native Chinese in their sampans and junks.

A unique and unusual evening’s entertainment has been devised, describing Maurice’s first sea-faring journey. Extracts from the letters will be read, complemented by sea-poems of the period. And Maurice Ewbank’s daughter – the actress Sybil Mitchell – will describe the family life he left behind. Michael McIntyre to host second show for Julia’s House

C

omedian Michael McIntyre is to host a second charity show for Julia’s House – this time at a bigger London venue, the Apollo in Hammersmith. Tickets for the one-night show on Friday, Feb 26th are on sale now. The comedian’s last gig for Julia’s House – at Salisbury City Hall back in June – sold out within two hours and raised enough money to fund a nurse. The show proved such a success that Mr McIntyre immediately announced plans for this second date in support of the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity.

Mr McIntyre, who has a home in Wiltshire, first got to know about Julia’s House after attending the private fundraising event hosted by patrons Guy Ritchie and Jacqui Ainslie which raised the first million for a new children’s hospice for Wiltshire. He subsequently dedicated one of his tour warm-up shows to Julia’s House – to an audience that included Guy, Jacqui and some of the nurses – and then went on to host his Salisbury show exclusively for the charity. Michael McIntyre has yet to announce his line-up of guests for this latest show but in the past they have included the likes of Alan Carr, John Bishop, James Corden, Sarah Millican and Gary Barlow. Short and sweet interview by Angela Clarence

I

sy Suttie the stand-up comedian much loved as Dobby in Channel 4’s Peep Show is at the Independent Bath Literature Festival 27th Feb

WHAT DID YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE PROCESS?

YOU HAVE SUCH A JOYFUL, EXUBERANT PERSONALITY. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN SO CONFIDENT AND OUTGOING?

The Life and Death of Sophie Stark and Edna O’Brien’s The Little Red Chairs. I read a lot - it’s real time to myself.

I was shy as a teenager. But I always wanted to perform and went to Guildford Drama School. Doing Stand-Up, doing it and doing it, learning so many skills along the way through trial and error - I was gradually able to make it seem effortless. Over time I found what I really wanted to say - found my true personality.

FAVOURITE CHILDREN’S BOOK?

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THE BOOK? I wrote some magazine articles about feeling like a misfit while all my friends were ‘settling down’ and went on from there. WHAT DISCIPLINE DID YOU USE? I woke up, had coffee and toast and then sat at my computer until I’d written 2,000 words.

It was like having a friend in my pocket. A RECENT BOOK YOU LOVED?

We’re reading ‘That’s Not My Bunny’. FAVOURITE BOX SET

IN BRIEF

What Cost Unconventional Gas Extraction (aka Fracking)?

F

racking could be coming to Wiltshire. Licenses have been granted in the Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Westbury area. Hydraulic fracturing is the process of drilling a pipeline into the ground and injecting fluid at high pressure, fracturing shale rock and releasing the natural gas inside. Those who favour fracking are promoting it as the saviour of our energy industry. We are told that it will reduce energy prices, will be less polluting than burning coal and will make the country more ‘energy secure’. Those who oppose fracking have a variety of concerns about water use and contamination, health risks, visual impact and environmental damage. There is no doubt that if fracking does take hold, it will create widespread industrialisation of the countryside. You are encouraged to do your own research and make up your own mind from the information you find. Richard Craft, Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon

radford on Avon is proud to have been a Fairtrade town since 2003. We have an active Fairtrade group and a lot of Fairtrade in our shops. We support both local and Fairtrade food because both enable small scale farmers to make a decent living for themselves and maintain high environmental standards. Fairtrade is a global people’s movement that is going from strength to strength, and the UK is in the lead because we buy more Fairtrade than anywhere else. As the world's most recognised ethical label, Fairtrade is good for individuals and businesses. Using any of the 4,500 Fairtrade products at home, in your office or your business makes global trade fairer. n line with our exciting expansion plans for 2016, HF Lettings are delighted to announce that in addition to renting a selection of gorgeous homes in Bradford on Avon, we are now working with the prestigious Iford Manor Estate. Set in an idyllic location, the Estate comprises a number of beautiful properties. We have already successfully secured tenants for two residences and have a further two available for long-term let. We’ll be introducing a third property in the Spring. Please explore our website www.hflettings.co.uk or call us on 01249 716333 for more details. LOCATION Iford is quintessential rural England at its finest. Nestled in the Frome Valley, its riverside position overlooks rolling hills and woodland. While losing yourself in some of Wiltshire’s most stunning views you’d be forgiven for thinking you were miles from anywhere but, in fact,

Iford is close to both Bradford on Avon and Freshford, which as well as good country pubs, have train lines into nearby Bath. This location also offers good access to excellent local schools including: Monkton (3 miles), Prior Park and King Edwards. IFORD MANOR ESTATE Steeped in history, the Iford valley has been occupied since Roman times. The medieval Manor House and picturesque Peto Garden that sit alongside the meandering Frome river, are famous for the recitals and operas that take place here during the summer months. For those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life, Iford is a slice of rural heaven that promises peace and quiet in the most wonderful setting. www.ifordmanor.co.uk

Reflecting the social kitchen trend, we have incorporated a Miele induction cooktop, a preparation space and a water-point in the Corian island, which enables the cook to enjoy both a garden view and interact with guests. The addition of a structured oak bar provides an innovative, seamless and informal dining table arrangement on which to share a coffee with friends. At hobsons|choice we begin by listening. With over 35 years of luxury kitchen design and installation experience, our priority is to understand what you truly want. UP CLOSE

Jamie Cullum Growing up in Wiltshire and life in general...

B

rought up in Hullavington, north of Chippenham, and educated at nearby Grittleton House School, he completed his sixth form studies at Sheldon School Comprehensive, 28

Chippenham. While at Reading University he produced an album for only £480. Original copies are now selling on eBay for up to £600. After graduating with first class honours, he released www.alocallife.co.uk

a second album, which snagged him a television interview on Parkinson. A record company bidding war ensued and later that year he became the biggest selling ‘crossover’ jazz artist of all time.

UP CLOSE Having grown up in Wiltshire, what are your best memories of living in the West Country? The open space to let your imagination run wild! I really think it gave me space to develop musical and creative ideas being around all that green and pleasant land. It inspired me to reach beyond what everyone else was doing and find my own voice. Do you still have family and friends here? Of course - although many have moved far and wide - the pull of the west country is hard to ignore - many have moved back or are thinking of doing so. How different is your life now compared to then? My goals, fascinations and values I think are essentially the same. I was always ambitious to create things, always interested in books, music, writing and art. However, having two kids and a life to look after means things are so different. You no longer make decisions just for yourself! It is freedom in some way! I guess I’m also playing bigger gigs now too! Have you always been interested in journalism, and what gave you the idea for The Eighty-Eight? Yes I have - writing really, not so much journalism. I always harboured the ambition to write a novel or film script. I have many unfinished ones on my hard drive. I have also always loved the magazine format, not only in content but also in terms of design, specifically illustration and typography. In the back

of my mind I always thought I would love to put something together as an experiment. It came together beautifully about 3 years ago now - two old west country friends Simon Tapscott and Kate Monument are both now very experienced in the magazine world, Simon in publishing and Kate in design. Over a Christmas drink one year I told Simon about my magazine idea as we had always shared a love for good writing. He inspired me to jump in at the deep end and just go for it. We contacted Kate (an unbelievably talented designer) who was up for it too! It was initially designed to sell to my fans on tour but became something bigger and far more interesting than the initial brief very quickly. How did you get involved with the Bath Literature Festival? I have many close connections with Bath Festivals, from gigs at the Bath Music Festival through to my Dad, John Cullum, who is now Chairman. Also the Publisher of The Eighty-Eight, Simon Tapscott, lives in Bath and works with Bath Festivals and he arranged my event on 3 March. Can you give a brief clue as to what to expect from ‘Conversations’? I love it when things are unplanned, if you’ve seen any of my gigs you will know this! However, I imagine it will contain aspects of the intersection between different areas of creativity, the death or rebirth of print media and the craziness of a restless mind. No47 February/March2016

What would you say are your biggest musical influences My older brother Ben has been a huge influence on me. Both his musical taste and passion for learning and improving on instruments are major factors in getting me to where i am today. And have you always been good at beatboxing? I have never been and am unlikely to ever be good at beatboxing, I am however a passionate amateur! Does your interest in photography include nature, and if so, what are your favourite spots in Wiltshire? I prefer taking portraits! Being a man of many talents and much energy, what advice would you give to your younger self, or to upcoming artists, of how to achieve and maintain success? You truly have to do it because you love it. It’s obvious I suppose, but these days the public can smell a rat more than ever before. Insincerity shines through. If you want a long career, do what you love and ignore anything other than your creative muse. Your audience will find you, and if you look after them, they will stay with you. Jamie Cullum: In Conversation live at the Guildhall, Bath at 4:15pm Thursday 3rd March. Tickets cost £9 and are available from bathfestivals.org.uk or call Bath Box Office 01225 463362.

AL MURRAY

10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Pub Landlord

by Viv Groskop - Artistic Director for The Independent Bath Literature Festival 2016

1. Comedian Al Murray started performing as The Pub Landlord in 1994 whilst he was the tour support for Harry Hill. At the time he was part of a band called The Pub Band International, in which he played the drums. The character grew out of the band. “I said, ‘Why don’t we say the compere hasn’t turned up and the barman has offered to fill in?’ And it worked.” 2. The Pub Landlord’s favourite band is Queen and he loves nothing better than to get musicians on his show to perform Queen tunes in their

32

own style. Al Murray himself is still an accomplished drummer and a guest musician with cult karaoke live show, Friday I’m in Love, a late night favourite at the Edinburgh Fringe. 3. His TV appearances as The Pub Landlord include The Royal Variety Performance (ITV1) three times, and hosting Live at the Apollo (BBC1). Out of character, Al Murray has hosted 7 Day Saturday (formerly 7 Day Sunday), a weekly news review programme for BBC Radio 5. He was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and was

www.alocallife.co.uk

voted 16th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. 4. His huge stand-up tours have made him one of the most popular live comedy acts in the country with sell-out shows including the O2 Arena. He won the Perrier Award (after a record four successive nominations) and secured Olivier Award nominations for both of his sell-out West End runs. 5. The Pub Landlord’s catchphrases? “All hail to the ale.” “A glass of white wine for the lady.” “My gaff, my rules.”

AL MURRAY He is described as “a mockxenophobic publican.” 6. In real life Al Murray studied history at Oxford University and has presented two BBC4 specials on war movies as well as a historical series about the art and culture of Germany. In his latest book, Watching War Films with My Dad, he looked at his childhood where his fascination with war and history began. 7. He came second in a Comic Relief crisp competition to name a new brand of crisps. Stephen Fry beat him with Stephen Fry-Up crisps. The Pub Landlord’s crisps were called Steak and Al Pie. Fellow contenders included Jimmy Con Carne (Jimmy Carr) and Frank Roast Dinner (Frank Skinner). 8. The Pub Landlord stood as a member of the Free United Kingdom Party (FUKP) at the

2015 election, running against UKIP leader Nigel Farage in the constituency of South Thanet in Kent. He polled 318 votes, more than the candidates for the Communist, Socialist and BNP parties. One of the key images from last year’s election was The Pub Landlord’s face of triumph and disbelief at the moment when Nigel Farage failed to be elected. 9. In the run-up to the election, the Pub Landlord said he was launching his campaign from a pub because “a pub is the cradle of democracy in the country that is the very mother of parliaments.” He said he planned to parachute into the town of Sandwich to launch the campaign but the stunt was scrapped because he was “too heavy to carry out the 12,000 ft jump.” He blamed this on being

“another victim of the obesity epidemic.” 10. The Pub Landlord’s election pledges included bricking up the Channel Tunnel, burning down the Houses of Parliament (“for the insurance money”) and “to fight Germany - if they’re up for it.” To the question “What will be the first thing you do if you’re elected?” he answered: “Well, you must know the old saying: with great power comes a great expense account.” Good job he’s still got his pub.

hail to the ale.” ““AAllglass of white wine for the lady. ”

Al Murray’s characterisation of a pub landlord might be a little too traditional for most pubs these days. With so many closing up and down the country each week, pubs have had to up their game by serving great food. Although we love fine dining, it’s good to go back to basics and enjoy a session of darts of local ales. Here we discover 5 local gems for you investigate...

THE DOG & FOX INN

THE TOLLGATE

Landlord, Clive, believes that a good local pub is one of the keystones of the community and so he offers a friendly welcome, well-kept ales, ciders, a comprehensive wine list, soft drinks and home cooked food. In colder months there are open fires burning bright in both the bars and on warmer days the large garden is a pleasant place to sit.

Laura & Mark moved to the free house in August 2012 wanting to bring it back to it’s roots, remembering the beautiful country pub it really is. We use local produce and local suppliers and pride ourselves in our classic yet innovative menu. We are recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide, Good Pub Guide and have also been awarded an AA Dinner Award for our cuisine and came runner up in ‘Best Country Pub in Bath’ at the Bath Food Awards 2014..

All the food is made from fresh, locally sourced, ingredients. Two courses from the evening menu cost around £15 and a two course Sunday lunch, is £17. Something light from £6. Booking is advised. FOOD & DRINK THE MILL AT RODE

THE FOX AT BROUGHTON GIFFORD

THE SOUTH WRAXALL CLUB

The Mill at Rode is a beautiful riverside bar and restaurant set in it’s own glorious grounds. The Mill makes a wonderful venue for drinking and dining with friends either in the sympathetically designed restaurant itself, or on the deck overlooking the river. The Mill has gained an excellent reputation for group bookings and parties. You can expect a very welcoming atmosphere with great service. If you haven’t been for a while you should take another look.

Nestling in the heart of this popular and picturesque village, with the emphasis on the food offering, a selection of two permanent ales, two rotating guest ales, and a substantial wine list. Our chef has created a seasonal British inspired menu, with some classical touches.

South Wraxall and District Working Men’s Club to use its full title dates from the early 1700s, it has been a club since1890. These days, however, the working men’s aspect is no longer a pre-requisite for membership - anyone over the age of 18 is eligible. Pop in to apply!

Producing house charcuterie, air cured hams, wet cured hams, sausages and even bacon, from our own pigs, we also bake a substantial amount of our own bread. What we don’t produce in house we source from great local companies such as Church Farm Meats.

Membership gives you access to unrivalled hospitality in a piece of Old England (The Pub Landlord Al Murray would approve). Run by members, we offer a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments, traditional bar snacks and the occasional treat provided by whoever is running the bar. Darts, shove ha’penny, table skittles and pool; TV Sports Evenings, occasional talks, duck races and general high jinks abound. Experience a warm welcome and the exclusivity of a club that probably only exists in one or two other similar places in the country.

RECIPE

Serves 2

Salmon & Asparagus Risotto Impress your partner with Valentine’s Day dishes that include ingredients famed throughout the centuries for their aphrodisiac qualities. Asparagus is a vegetable lauded by the Greeks and the Kama Sutra for its potent qualities. A delicious salad, which only contains ingredients intended to fire your passion.

METHOD Soften the onion in butter over a low to medium heat. Add the zest of the lemon and the rice and stir well. Add a cup or two of liquid and let simmer. As the broth is absorbed, add more liquid until 36

it is all gone. Stir regularly until rice is almost done. Add a good squeeze or two of lemon. Don’t be afraid to add more water if necessary. When the rice is done, add 1/2 a cup of freshly grated cheese and turn off the heat. Meanwhile, place the asparagus pieces in a steamer over boiling water for about 6 minutes. Place the salmon fillets in a pan of cold water over a medium heat. As soon as the water boils, turn off heat and leave no longer than 7 minutes. Remove fish onto a plate and break gently into large pieces. Stir the asparagus into the rice and reheat if necessary and then gently add in the salmon. Serve on warm plates. Finish off by adding a further squeeze of lemon and a sprinkling of grated cheese on top. www.alocallife.co.uk

RECIPE

Simply The Best Chocolate Mousse Cake (Adapted From A Recipe By James Martin)

A meltingly delicious chocolate dessert that is quick and easy to make and is a real libido rouser - Casanova was renowned for consuming copious amounts of chocolate to support his amorous exploits! Yet that’s no reason that Mum can’t enjoy this seriously indulgent cake on Mother’s Day too.

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease a 24cm/9½in loose-bottomed cake tin with butter and line with silicone or baking paper. Put squares of chocolate and butter cut into squares into a heatproof bowl over a large saucepan of hot water (not touching the water) and stir until melted. Allow to cool. Whisk egg yolks with half the sugar until thick and pale. Add liqueur and whisk again. Whisk the egg whites with the rest of the sugar until they reach the soft peak stage. Pour egg yolk mixture into melted chocolate and whisk together. Mix in half the egg whites until well incorporated, and then gently fold in the remainder of the egg whites. No47 February/March2016

Pour the mixture into the cake tin. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until just set. (The cake will wobble a little in the middle.) . Dust the cake with cocoa powder and then gently remove from tin. Serve straight away or at room temperature, with a dollop of whipped cream.

INGREDIENTS 300g/10½oz plain chocolate 150g/5½oz butter, plus extra for greasing 6 free-range eggs, separated 50g/1¾oz caster sugar 4 tbsp orange liqueur 300ml/10½fl oz double cream A tablespoon of cocoa powder (optional) 37

great haircut helps both men and women not only look good on the outside, but feel good on the inside. Guiseppe Calascione of Figo Hair has expanded his successful Salon in Bath to launch a second at the Wadswick Green development, just five miles outside Bradford on Avon. Lauded both for his dexterity and panache with hair styling, as well as his social skills - a positive outlook, a listening ear, and a willingness to share some of his own entertaining experiences - it is no surprise that he engendered a tremendously loyal following in Bath. “We love making the most of your hair’s particular characteristics, health and condition, either creating a new look to suit you, your lifestyle and individuality, or giving you the confidence that gorgeous hair is achievable with your own style every single day.” Backed by a wealth of experience and technical know-how, whether you fancy short hair crops,

classic, sophisticated mid-length styles, need highlights, colour, or smart men’s grooming, the hairdressing experience with Guiseppe and his team is a luxurious and caring experience. HEALTH & FITNESS

Homeopathy A logical, safe and successful system of medicine that has been tried and tested over the last 230 years.

H

omeopathy is a system of medicine that utilizes specially prepared doses of medicines made from various substances from the plant, mineral or animal kingdom. Each medicine/remedy is prescribed for its capacity to cause, if given in large doses to healthy people, symptoms similar to those that the sick person is experiencing. Because basic physiology recognizes that symptoms represent defenses of the body

(and mind) in its efforts to fight infection and/or adapt to stress, a homeopathic medicine is selected for its capacity to mimic a person's own symptoms, thereby augmenting their own defensive response. It is just as suitable for acute illness and treating more chronic diseases. Here is just one example, in the treatment of chronic fibromyalgia, with evidence - from the medical journal of Rheumatology:

in lessening tender point pain and improving the quality of life and global health of persons with fibromyalgia.

Improved clinical status in fibromyalgia patients treated with individualized homeopathic remedies versus placebo.

(Rheumatology (2004) 43 (5): 577-582.doi: 10.1093/ rheumatology/keh111. First published online: January 20, 2004)

...the present study demonstrated that individualized homeopathy is significantly better than placebo

Under the Stars From Germany to China on Moultons

W

e get many pictures sent to us from all corners of the globe and on this occasion intrepid cycle-touring couple Tobias and Katia have sent us tales of their adventures cycling all the way to China on their own Moultons. Leaving their homes in Germany behind them, they went on a fascinating journey that took them across Turkey before entering the Southern Caucusus and crossing a number of the former Soviet republics of central Asia. The final leg across Tibet and into China brought incredible vistas, adventures and challenges and we are reminded of the epic journey from Bradford to Australia completed years ago by Colin Martin on his locally built Moulton Marathon. When asked to name a country that was a favourite on the trip, our friends didn’t hesitate in mentioning Kyrgyzstan, calling

it a picturesque country full of mountain scenery with almost no tourist activity. Encounters with dogs, punctures and high altitude snow-capped mountain passes were all part of the challenge, but unexpected jewels like Song Kol lake were ample reward for all of their efforts. Tobias describes it as a wonderful mountain lake 3200 meters above sea level, where nomads live over the summer months with only their livestock and occasional cyclists for company! Photos of Moultons tucked away in their colourful yurts are proof of the Kyrgystani hospitality.

bumpy roads. Keep your eyes out for Tobias this month, as he is spending a few weeks with us here at the Moulton factory. You might catch him clocking up a few calmer miles along the tow path to Bath or dealing with lesser altitude sickness problems on the way up to the pub at the top of Mason’s Lane!

And how was the Moulton as a touring bike? Being lightweight, fast and stowable, they were ideal kit for the trip. Equipped with their unique front and rear suspension systems, the Moultons were much appreciated for providing extra comfort on those thousands of miles of

LIFE

This month the column returns with a green look at local life... VEG NOT BREAD While feeding ducks and swans is an enjoyable pastime, BREAD harms both birds and water. To ensure healthy wildlife and waterways, switch to veg trimmings, defrosted frozen peas or Swan & Duck Food (available from Fetch Pet Shop in the Shambles BOA/E T Lumley, Gloucester Road, Malmesbury). Veg is good for dogs too. Gluten free, vegetarian dog chews - good for healthy bones, teeth and tummies - are currently trending in Notting Hill. Try Whimzees available at both the above shops. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD Fracking licenses have been granted for land between Bradford on Avon and Westbury and from Farleigh Hungerford to Ashton Common! Fracking requires the use of millions of gallons of water containing 596 different chemicals which then which then has to be dumped - somewhere. Watch out for contaminated land and ground water; wildlife corpses; taps spouting radioactive water and

UPMARKET RECYCLING Clearing clutter is hip, downsizing is on the increase and austerity is still with us. Fiona Leach at Second Hand Rose on Market Street in BOA offers high end outfits at a fraction of their original price. The addition of her shop for tiny tots, Roundabout on Church Street, also puts children in line for good quality clothes, toys and equipment at affordable prices. Buy interesting stuff and sell unwanted togs. SAVING THE BEES The Glove Factory Field Kitchen at Holt has added a second beehive to their sustainable endeavours. It will be a while before we can benefit from their own brand honey. In the meantime, enjoy creative breakfasts, lunches or teas in contemporary surroundings; or munch on yummy filled croissants while listening to inspirational speakers at monthly Business Breakfasts. www.glovefactorystudios.com BoA TOWN BRANDING Solar Panels could provide energy to floodlight historic buildings and river arches, suggests a branding guru employed by the local Council and aired at the Area Board Meeting. Lovely idea. They do it in Bedford, Bruges and Budapest – why not BoA? He also highlighted Bradford as being ‘The Perfect Setting’ for film locations; weddings; No47 February/March2016

and day trips from Bath (out by train and back by canal boat). Bradfordians are well aware, as they are of our fantastic eateries which sadly didn’t get a mention. Can a coherent PR strategy be implemented to take advantage? In the fullness of time, perhaps? Creating a new branding logo for the town is essential, the logo on the updated town guide is a possible direction - graphic bridge on Bradford blue. A small pot of business and community grants are available from Wiltshire County Council until 2020. Grab one while you can because in 2020 councils become self-funding! www.wiltshire.gov.uk BEST BUSINESS Congratulations to local finalists in this year’s Bath Life Awards commending best businesses in the area including: Hartley Farm Shop and Kitchen at Winsley, nominated for best Café/Coffee Shop. Dorothy House Hospice Care at Winsley, nominated for best Charity. Longs Arms at South Wraxall nominated for best Gastropub. Awards will be held at the Assembly Rooms, Bath on February 25th. Good luck to all. Camilla camilla@alocallife.co.uk 53
