The weather has been kind to Wiltshire - so far, and daffodils remind us that both Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are close. 2016 being a leap year suggests that Recipes for Lovers and Mothers’ might help nudge romance - after all, love is not just for the young… Arts events abound as The Independent Literature Festival in Bath showcases a profusion of literary talent. We have interviews with three participants, including Jamie Cullum, Comedian Isy Suttie, and Pub Landlord Al Murray who celebrates the continuing vigour of REAL pubs, of which we are lucky to have many in the area. A new season at the Wiltshire Music Centre has something for everyone with Mozart, Mahler and live screenings from Covent Garden; Jazz, Funk, World Music and Modern Dance; and two whizz bang special events for children: Wonderland, a family concert and My Science Fair activity day. nfortunately nowadays people increasingly find themselves in a situation where they, or someone they love faces a difficult decision with regards to the receipt of, or continued receipt of, life sustaining treatment. The simplest way to think about this is somebody on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;life support machineâ&#x20AC;?. However, what happens when that person is no longer able to make decisions about their future medical care? What do you do when, as the closest family member or the next of kin, you are asked what should happen next? Recognising that not everybody would necessarily want to have in place a Lasting Power of Attorney

for Health & Welfare, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 gave a statutory footing to the common law with regards to Advance Directives or, as they are sometimes referred to, Living Wills. The Act allows a person to state that in the circumstances specified in the Advanced Directive that they refuse specific medical treatment. This Directive then would be applied if they lacked capacity to consent to the carrying out, or continuation of, the treatment identified. It may be slightly confusing, but the decision can only extend to the refusal of treatment and cannot stipulate that treatment must be started or should continue. As with other proxy decisions such as the appointment of an

Attorney, the person giving the direction must be over 18 and have the legal capacity to give it. As always it is best to obtain full, professional legal advice and to instruct a solicitor to draft your Advanced Directive on your behalf. he public are being invited to have their say on subsidised bus services in Wiltshire, which account for half the bus mileage in the county, at a cost of £5.1 million a year.

Wiltshire Council is looking into how to make several million pounds of savings over the next three years and their ‘Bus Service Consultation’ forms part of their research. “We are committed to minimising any impact changes might have, especially on vulnerable people including those who are elderly, disabled and young. We really do want to hear from people who could be affected by any changes to the current services and we will be doing everything we can to act on those comments.” The Minister for Transport has expressed concern, but stated: ”…due to the pressures on local authority spending, we are under severe pressure to reduce the amount of budget we spend on subsidizing public transport…” Make your voice heard by picking up a form at council offices, libraries and on some buses; call 0300 456 0100 for a postal copy; or post comments online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/subsidised-busservicesconsultation until April 4. Expansion and transformation at Monkton Prep School

ig things are happening at Monkton Prep as the school embarks on an ambitious programme of expansion and transformation. Construction is well underway on a new £4.4 million development which will bring together Monkton’s Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep and provide enhanced teaching and learning facilities for all divisions of the school. Demand for places at Monkton Prep has been growing and the new building, which is scheduled to open in Autumn this year, will accommodate additional places whilst enabling the school to maintain small class sizes alongside inspiring play and woodland areas, an upgraded swimming pool and sports facilities, and extensive parking. Letters from the Sea 1900 : a young man’s journey March 11, 2016 – Upper Masonic Hall, Bradford at 7.30pm

n June 1900, Maurice Ewbank, then aged 15, sailed from Liverpool on the merchant ship Senator. Six months later he was in Wei Hai Wei in China. Why he gave up a comfortable life in a country rectory, surrounded by a loving family, to endure a hard, rough-and-ready life on board ship we will never know with certainty. But we do have the evocative and poignant letters which he wrote home, letters which made their way back across the oceans to rural Cumberland. They paint a picture of a gruelling life and homesickness, but also show a young man interested and excited by the sights and sounds of his voyage, and of Wei Hai Wei, bustling with sailors, troops and native Chinese in their sampans and junks.

A unique and unusual evening’s entertainment has been devised, describing Maurice’s first sea-faring journey. Extracts from the letters will be read, complemented by sea-poems of the period. And Maurice Ewbank’s daughter – the actress Sybil Mitchell – will describe the family life he left behind. he Spring Summer concert Season is now in full swing at Wiltshire Music Centre with a programme of international stars and special collaborations. Young British pianist, Benjamin Grosvenor, flies in from Florida USA to make his Wiltshire Music Centre debut with Mozart’s Piano Concerto in B flat Major. Benjamin wowed audiences at the 2015 Last Night of the Proms, and performs with the Britten Sinfonia (Sat 23 Apr, 7.30pm). Celtic supergroup Altan make a rare UK appearance (Sun 22 Apr, 7.30pm), with folk songstress Fay Hield leading a stellar supporting cast The Hurricane Party, featuring BBC Folk Musician of the Year Sam Sweeney in February (Sat 13 Feb, 7.30pm). The Centre is delighted to welcome award-winning jazz trombonist Dennis Rollins

(Prince, Tom Jones) as its 2016 Artist in Residence. Michael McIntyre to host second show for Julia’s House

omedian Michael McIntyre is to host a second charity show for Julia’s House – this time at a bigger London venue, the Apollo in Hammersmith. Tickets for the one-night show on Friday, Feb 26th are on sale now. The comedian’s last gig for Julia’s House – at Salisbury City Hall back in June – sold out within two hours and raised enough money to fund a nurse. The show proved such a success that Mr McIntyre immediately announced plans for this second date in support of the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity.

Mr McIntyre, who has a home in Wiltshire, first got to know about Julia’s House after attending the private fundraising event hosted by patrons Guy Ritchie and Jacqui Ainslie which raised the first million for a new children’s hospice for Wiltshire. He subsequently dedicated one of his tour warm-up shows to Julia’s House – to an audience that included Guy, Jacqui and some of the nurses – and then went on to host his Salisbury show exclusively for the charity. Michael McIntyre has yet to announce his line-up of guests for this latest show but in the past they have included the likes of Alan Carr, John Bishop, James Corden, Sarah Millican and Gary Barlow. Those who favour fracking are promoting it as the saviour of our energy industry. We are told that it will reduce energy prices, will be less polluting than burning coal and will make the country more ‘energy secure’. Those who oppose fracking have a variety of concerns about water use and contamination, health risks, visual impact and environmental damage. There is no doubt that if fracking does take hold, it will create widespread industrialisation of the countryside. UP CLOSE Having grown up in Wiltshire, what are your best memories of living in the West Country? The open space to let your imagination run wild! I really think it gave me space to develop musical and creative ideas being around all that green and pleasant land. It inspired me to reach beyond what everyone else was doing and find my own voice. Do you still have family and friends here? Of course - although many have moved far and wide - the pull of the west country is hard to ignore - many have moved back or are thinking of doing so. How different is your life now compared to then? My goals, fascinations and values I think are essentially the same. I was always ambitious to create things, always interested in books, music, writing and art. However, having two kids and a life to look after means things are so different. You no longer make decisions just for yourself! It is freedom in some way! I guess I’m also playing bigger gigs now too! Have you always been interested in journalism, and what gave you the idea for The Eighty-Eight? Yes I have - writing really, not so much journalism. I always harboured the ambition to write a novel or film script. I have many unfinished ones on my hard drive. I have also always loved the magazine format, not only in content but also in terms of design, specifically illustration and typography. In the back

of my mind I always thought I would love to put something together as an experiment. It came together beautifully about 3 years ago now - two old west country friends Simon Tapscott and Kate Monument are both now very experienced in the magazine world, Simon in publishing and Kate in design. Over a Christmas drink one year I told Simon about my magazine idea as we had always shared a love for good writing. He inspired me to jump in at the deep end and just go for it. We contacted Kate (an unbelievably talented designer) who was up for it too! It was initially designed to sell to my fans on tour but became something bigger and far more interesting than the initial brief very quickly. How did you get involved with the Bath Literature Festival? I have many close connections with Bath Festivals, from gigs at the Bath Music Festival through to my Dad, John Cullum, who is now Chairman. Also the Publisher of The Eighty-Eight, Simon Tapscott, lives in Bath and works with Bath Festivals and he arranged my event on 3 March. Can you give a brief clue as to what to expect from ‘Conversations’? I love it when things are unplanned, if you’ve seen any of my gigs you will know this! However, I imagine it will contain aspects of the intersection between different areas of creativity, the death or rebirth of print media and the craziness of a restless mind. What would you say are your biggest musical influences My older brother Ben has been a huge influence on me. Both his musical taste and passion for learning and improving on instruments are major factors in getting me to where i am today. And have you always been good at beatboxing? I have never been and am unlikely to ever be good at beatboxing, I am however a passionate amateur! Does your interest in photography include nature, and if so, what are your favourite spots in Wiltshire? I prefer taking portraits! Being a man of many talents and much energy, what advice would you give to your younger self, or to upcoming artists, of how to achieve and maintain success? You truly have to do it because you love it. It’s obvious I suppose, but these days the public can smell a rat more than ever before. Insincerity shines through. If you want a long career, do what you love and ignore anything other than your creative muse. Your audience will find you, and if you look after them, they will stay with you. 1. Comedian Al Murray started performing as The Pub Landlord in 1994 whilst he was the tour support for Harry Hill. At the time he was part of a band called The Pub Band International, in which he played the drums. The character grew out of the band. “I said, ‘Why don’t we say the compere hasn’t turned up and the barman has offered to fill in?’ And it worked.” 2. The Pub Landlord’s favourite band is Queen and he loves nothing better than to get musicians on his show to perform Queen tunes in their

own style. Al Murray himself is still an accomplished drummer and a guest musician with cult karaoke live show, Friday I’m in Love, a late night favourite at the Edinburgh Fringe. 3. His TV appearances as The Pub Landlord include The Royal Variety Performance (ITV1) three times, and hosting Live at the Apollo (BBC1). Out of character, Al Murray has hosted 7 Day Saturday (formerly 7 Day Sunday), a weekly news review programme for BBC Radio 5. He was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and was

voted 16th greatest stand-up comic on Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. 4. His huge stand-up tours have made him one of the most popular live comedy acts in the country with sell-out shows including the O2 Arena. He won the Perrier Award (after a record four successive nominations) and secured Olivier Award nominations for both of his sell-out West End runs. 5. The Pub Landlord’s catchphrases? “All hail to the ale.” “A glass of white wine for the lady.” “My gaff, my rules.”

In real life Al Murray studied history at Oxford University and has presented two BBC4 specials on war movies as well as a historical series about the art and culture of Germany. In his latest book, Watching War Films with My Dad, he looked at his childhood where his fascination with war and history began. 7. He came second in a Comic Relief crisp competition to name a new brand of crisps. Stephen Fry beat him with Stephen Fry-Up crisps. The Pub Landlord’s crisps were called Steak and Al Pie. Fellow contenders included Jimmy Con Carne (Jimmy Carr) and Frank Roast Dinner (Frank Skinner). 8. The Pub Landlord stood as a member of the Free United Kingdom Party (FUKP) at the

2015 election, running against UKIP leader Nigel Farage in the constituency of South Thanet in Kent. He polled 318 votes, more than the candidates for the Communist, Socialist and BNP parties. One of the key images from last year’s election was The Pub Landlord’s face of triumph and disbelief at the moment when Nigel Farage failed to be elected. 9. In the run-up to the election, the Pub Landlord said he was launching his campaign from a pub because “a pub is the cradle of democracy in the country that is the very mother of parliaments.” He said he planned to parachute into the town of Sandwich to launch the campaign but the stunt was scrapped because he was “too heavy to carry out the 12,000 ft jump.” He blamed this on being

The Pub Landlord’s election pledges included bricking up the Channel Tunnel, burning down the Houses of Parliament (“for the insurance money”) and “to fight Germany - if they’re up for it.” To the question “What will be the first thing you do if you’re elected?” he answered: “Well, you must know the old saying: with great power comes a great expense account.” Good job he’s still got his pub.

Salmon & Asparagus Risotto Impress your partner with Valentine’s Day dishes that include ingredients famed throughout the centuries for their aphrodisiac qualities. Asparagus is a vegetable lauded by the Greeks and the Kama Sutra for its potent qualities. A delicious salad, which only contains ingredients intended to fire your passion.

METHOD Soften the onion in butter over a low to medium heat. Add the zest of the lemon and the rice and stir well. Add a cup or two of liquid and let simmer. As the broth is absorbed, add more liquid until 36

it is all gone. Stir regularly until rice is almost done. Add a good squeeze or two of lemon. Don’t be afraid to add more water if necessary. When the rice is done, add 1/2 a cup of freshly grated cheese and turn off the heat. Meanwhile, place the asparagus pieces in a steamer over boiling water for about 6 minutes. Place the salmon fillets in a pan of cold water over a medium heat. As soon as the water boils, turn off heat and leave no longer than 7 minutes. Remove fish onto a plate and break gently into large pieces. Stir the asparagus into the rice and reheat if necessary and then gently add in the salmon. Serve on warm plates. Finish off by adding a further squeeze of lemon and a sprinkling of grated cheese on top. www.alocallife.co.uk

SERVE WITH SALAD Rocket & Avocado Salad with Pine Nuts & Pomegranate Seeds CHILE VINAIGRETTE DRESSING 4 tbsps good olive oil 1 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp sugar (any kind) 1 garlic clove (crushed) ¼ tsp chile powder Drop or two of milk or cream Whisk ingredients together, adjust seasoning to your taste.

Simply The Best Chocolate Mousse Cake (Adapted From A Recipe By James Martin)

A meltingly delicious chocolate dessert that is quick and easy to make and is a real libido rouser - Casanova was renowned for consuming copious amounts of chocolate to support his amorous exploits! Yet that’s no reason that Mum can’t enjoy this seriously indulgent cake on Mother’s Day too.

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease a 24cm/9½in loose-bottomed cake tin with butter and line with silicone or baking paper. Put squares of chocolate and butter cut into squares into a heatproof bowl over a large saucepan of hot water (not touching the water) and stir until melted. Allow to cool. Whisk egg yolks with half the sugar until thick and pale. Add liqueur and whisk again. Whisk the egg whites with the rest of the sugar until they reach the soft peak stage. Pour egg yolk mixture into melted chocolate and whisk together. Mix in half the egg whites until well incorporated, and then gently fold in the remainder of the egg whites. No47 February/March2016

Pour the mixture into the cake tin. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until just set. (The cake will wobble a little in the middle.) . Dust the cake with cocoa powder and then gently remove from tin. Serve straight away or at room temperature, with a dollop of whipped cream.

Under the Stars From Germany to China on Moultons

e get many pictures sent to us from all corners of the globe and on this occasion intrepid cycle-touring couple Tobias and Katia have sent us tales of their adventures cycling all the way to China on their own Moultons. Leaving their homes in Germany behind them, they went on a fascinating journey that took them across Turkey before entering the Southern Caucusus and crossing a number of the former Soviet republics of central Asia. The final leg across Tibet and into China brought incredible vistas, adventures and challenges and we are reminded of the epic journey from Bradford to Australia completed years ago by Colin Martin on his locally built Moulton Marathon. When asked to name a country that was a favourite on the trip, our friends didn’t hesitate in mentioning Kyrgyzstan, calling

it a picturesque country full of mountain scenery with almost no tourist activity. Encounters with dogs, punctures and high altitude snow-capped mountain passes were all part of the challenge, but unexpected jewels like Song Kol lake were ample reward for all of their efforts. Tobias describes it as a wonderful mountain lake 3200 meters above sea level, where nomads live over the summer months with only their livestock and occasional cyclists for company! Photos of Moultons tucked away in their colourful yurts are proof of the Kyrgystani hospitality.
