EDUCATION
Activity, discovery & adventure secure and supportive pastoral environment. Our aim is simple: to inspire a life-long love of learning in those around us. So every day we use our expertise, ingenuity and enthusiasm to do just that. All children enjoy and are good at something; a school's job is to help them find and nurture their talents. Our experienced teaching staff continually encourage academic aspiration and learning. We strongly believe that a passion pursued now will offer untold opportunities for the future.

e are a co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 3 to 18 in the South West of England. Life at Warminster is a busy one, filled with academic and co-curricular activity, discovery and adventure. Everyone who visits us comments on our friendly atmosphere and sense of strong community. This is a vital aspect of the School and one that we cherish. Everyone has a part to play in contributing to the community. Pupils and staff are encouraged to share their interests, support one another, get stuck in and give 100% to everything. We are large enough to feel rich and diverse, but small enough to remain homely and provide opportunities for all. Warminster is known for its wonderful family feel and as a school where individuality is encouraged to grow. It gives our pupils the best of both worlds – a peaceful rural location, but also a cosmopolitan pupil body that replicates the world into which they are heading. Pastoral care is the most important aspect of any school: a child who is happy and feels safe can flourish and Warminster is committed to providing a
Every child is encouraged to aspire academically and to enjoy their learning. We are proud that our pupils not only fulfil their academic potential but are challenged to develop an intellectual curiosity and to have lively minds. These are habits that last a lifetime. Young people today face an unpredictable world but there are certain timeless aspects of a genuine education. We place strong emphasis on character and values and we want our pupils to leave as wellrounded, well-mannered, self-confident, articulate and fundamentally decent people with a sense of duty and integrity. We offer a wide range of co-curricular opportunities and experiences, and foster a culture of enthusiasm, optimism and ‘getting stuck in’. We prepare our pupils for life beyond school - at university and in the world of work. Most of all, though, we are a community, in which each boy and girl is valued and nurtured on the basis of who they are, whatever their age, natural gifts or background. Warminster School is located in the town of Warminster in Wiltshire – a peaceful rural setting, on the edge of Salisbury Plain. With good road and rail links we are a little under two hours from London by train and within easy reach of Bath, Bristol and Salisbury.

HEADING in brief...
Encouraging trends in Warminster
T
he last meeting of the Planning Advisory Committee gave a good indication that business in the town is showing an encouraging trend of growth. Councillors supported plans for 15 small business starter units at Furnax Lane. Approval was recommended for a change of use from retail to a beauty salon for a unit in Weymouth Street, following a relocation of the previous business to larger premises in George Street. Approval was also recommended for a change of use from a restaurant/café to a hot food takeaway in Market Place, although there were some reservations about the proximity to the bus stop. The extension of the camping site at Botany Farm, was supported by members feeling this was encouraging for business opportunities and would bring tourism to the town with affordable accommodation for visitors to enjoy the local amenities. “We are delighted to see such positive indications that business in Warminster is showing a healthy upward trend”, said Councillor Rob Fryer, the Chair of the Planning Advisory Committee. www.warminster-tc.gov.uk 12
Rare anteater born
A
rare baby giant anteater has been born at Longleat as part of a captive-breeding programme for the bizarre-looking South American mammal. ‘Julie-Poppet’, as she’s been nicknamed by keepers, is only the third giant anteater to be born at the Wiltshire safari park. The tiny anteater’s arrival is particularly welcome as the species is officially listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Between 2000 and 2010, the total population declined by 30%. “To have a successful birth is fantastic as the species is under increasing threat in the wild,” said keeper Catriona Carr. “It’s especially good to see mum and Julie-Poppet showing all the usual signs of a mother and baby relationship in the early stages. “For the first six months Maroni will carry the baby on her back virtually all the time. The baby takes milk by moving around underneath mum and only very rarely lets go. “The baby aligns itself to the pattern on mum’s back to provide camouflage from any predators who might prey on the young. It’s so effective that it’s almost as if the baby becomes invisible,” she added. Mum Maroni, who was born in France, and German dad Bonito arrived at Longleat five years ago as part of a co-ordinated European Breeding Programme for the species. In her spare time Sally enjoys the great outdoors and mountain walking in particular.“At Stonar pupils (and staff) have a variety of outstanding sporting,

There is a real emphasis on each pupil becoming the best he or she can be, both personally and academically, and our staff will go out of their way to support each child in this,” explains Sally. Since 2011 Stonar Prep School has been coeducational. In 2016 the Senior School will be welcoming boys. Sally believes that as women and men need to work effectively together in Western society, they should learn to do this at school. With boys in the Prep School already, no major changes are required. Stonar now offers a truly global perspective to its education: Joining the NACE group in 2011 gives pupils the chance to meet, collaborate and make friends with their international counterparts. www.stonarschool.com

BUSINESS FOCUS
Rosie Phelps on the board of Cooper & Tanner Lettings
S
omerset based, Rosie Phelps will be a regular face in Warminster as she has joined the board of Cooper and Tanner Lettings and is based in the Warminster branch of the business. Rosie has been brought in to modernise and expand the business. The lettings business of Cooper and Tanner has an excellent reputation in Warminster and Rosie’s vision is to roll out Lettings to Castle Cary initially and then all the Cooper and Tanner branches. In 2008, Rosie left her role as an RAF Intelligence Officer working alongside UK Special Forces in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq, to take over her parents’ lettings business in Somerset. During this time she also acquired Wells based SF Lettings and merged the two businesses together to create Stoberry Lettings.
14
In May 2013 Stoberry lettings won Wells Business of the Year. Under Rosie’s leadership the business had grown 20 percent year on year in five years. Then in June Stoberry Lettings won the silver award at the Lettings Agency of the Year Awards in London. It was following the Lettings Agency of the Year Awards, that Rosie was approached by John Hards, the Managing Director of Countrywide Residential Lettings. They were looking to acquire a lettings business in Wells and in September 2013 they purchased Stoberry Lettings. Rosie took some time off to go travelling and on her return began discussions with Cooper and Tanner as the current franchise owners Karen Bell and Sheila Pinson were retiring. “I enjoy bringing new ideas and practices to a business. Implementing plans for steady www.alocallife.co.uk
and sustainable growth is my speciality. Cooper and Tanner Lettings has an excellent reputation and I am looking forward to modernising the business processes and expanding into a bright future.” said Rosie Rosie was very impressed with Cooper and Tanner’s working practices and felt their high standards fitted well with her own and so in October this year took over the reins of the lettings business to begin implementing her ideas and plans. 01985 219188 www.cooperandtanner.co.uk

An invitation out of d’Azur:
Moultons in Monaco!
S
Nite riders We were asked to take part in an inaugural event there, the NiteRace, which covered 30 laps on a section of the Monaco Formula 1 race track. Many local residents, charity-minded, or yacht involved cyclists took part and we invited a father and son team, Steve (55) and Zeb Kyffin (17) to bring their Moulton bikes down from Newcastle to take part. They performed impressively, lining up alongside 100 big-wheeled racing bikes. Zeb has only just become a category 3 cyclist, but he cycled his heart out and was only ever overtaken by the Pro-rider on the race. His father was only 5 seconds a lap slower than him and together they did a fantastic job flying the flag! The prize-goody bag given to every participant included free tickets to the LikeBike show (featuring unique bicycles from around the world) held the following weekend, so many visiting us on the stand already knew from personal experience just how fast a Moulton can be ridden! The LikeBike show took place at the prime Monaco waterfront location, the Grimaldi Forum. Prince Albert of Monaco made a kind and supportive video-taped message for us all, welcoming us to these inaugural cycling events held in the Principality. 16

ometimes it’s important for us here at Moulton Bicycles to go further afield to show our unique bicycles to a wider audience. Hand-built here in the heart of Bradford on Avon it’s a pleasure to see our bicycles being ridden at new events and in April we were happy to accept an out-of-the-blue invitation from Monaco.
many visiting us on the “stand knew from experience
just how fast a Moulton can be ridden!
”
As icing on the cake, we were also allowed to have a stainless steel Moulton on show for ten days at the Monaco Yacht Club, which was a rare coup and kind gesture on the Club's part. At the same time, Tomo-san, our friend from Cyclograph magazine took photos and video of the Kyffins both racing and touring on Moultons, which hopefully will feature in pages of a popular Japanese cycling magazine, another way of spreading the word about Bradford on Avon’s Moulton bicycles far and wide!

Coppice Guild – distinctive design
“... distinctive,

”
W
hen setting up a new business in a field that is full of competitors it is so important to stand out from the crowd. Julie Mason of Coppice Guild was so thrilled when the judges of The Bath Life Awards recognised how special Coppice Guild is. Their comments were: “Coppice Guild is distinctive, highly connected to artisanal Bath, beautiful designs and highly consultative” It is in being connected to local makers, with complete artistic freedom that makes Coppice Guild so fresh and interesting. This can be seen clearly in a couple of projects now completed. National award winning builders Bloor Homes were quick to discover Coppice Guild and decided to put a range known as ‘The Shambles’ in their

flagship property in Fortescue Fields in Norton St Philip. The property needed to have a kitchen with elegant period detailing whilst retaining a modern twist. Downstairs is a classic shaker laundry room – still very popular when kept very simple and uncluttered. As a complete contrast, Coppice Guild have installed a minimalistic kitchen in a historical manor house close to Bath, where blending the old with the new worked very successfully. “The client wanted something bright and contemporary to replace a very dark kitchen in a room with little natural light. We added architectural features to the room such as lowering the outside edge of the ceiling to install concealed uplighters – to add height to the room. Also we created a lobby area so that guests did not walk

straight into the kitchen whilst doubling as a recycling store - key to making the space functional and appealing” Watch out for yet another design range of furniture that is ‘on the drawing board’ for later on this year – something elegant with a Scandinavian vibe. Julie is keeping her eyes open for a client with a stunning empty space needing a new kitchen who would be happy to help develop the new prototype and be prepared to have photographs taken when completed. Cookery events play an important role in reaching out to potential clients whilst keeping in touch with the community. The next event is on 20th April for all AGA enthusiasts. Details can be found on www. coppiceguild.co.uk where you can register to be on a mailing list for forthcoming events.

TV presenter and farmer
Adam Henson
shares his stories with Wiltshire audience
A
dam Henson, the 48-year-old presenter of popular BBC TV series Countryfile and Lambing Live, was in Wiltshire recently talking to a packed audience about his life as a farmer and a TV personality. He’d been invited to be guest speaker at an event organised by the Wiltshire Heights Care Home in Bradford on Avon and to support a new local charity – Hub@BA15 which aims to help those in need in the community. Guests queued outside in order to meet Adam, who works a 1,200-acre farm near Cheltenham – his farm is now famous for rare breeds and it’s open to the public as Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park – for more information see www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk
Childhood Adam talked about having a privileged childhood brought up on a farm with his sister and being able to live a free and abundant life in rural Gloucestershire. However the ability to entertain also runs through the family as Adam’s grandfather Leslie Henson was a well known actor and comedian, especially during WW2, and his uncle Nicky Henson is also an accomplished actor. Adam was clearly most in awe of his father Joe, who only ever wanted to farm and who inspired him to do whatever he wished in life. Adam always knew, wherever life took him – he would always come home to be a farmer. “My dad was my hero and my mentor,” he said. “He was so No3 Summer 2015

exciting and so entrepreneurial, he saw opportunities where others saw problems.” One of those opportunities was the drive to keep rare breeds of farm animals when they fell out of fashion, or didn’t suit the emerging farms where goods needed to be mass produced in the 1950s and 1960s. This vision means that today Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park is the oldest of its kind in the UK – first opening its doors to the public in 1973. Adam went to local schools and then agricultural college before 21
UP CLOSE to the farm, its success is actually down to teamwork. He particularly singled out his friend and now business partner Duncan Andrews. Duncan and Adam studied together and went their separate ways but always stayed in touch. On a visit to Duncan – where Adam had arrived to sheer his own rare breed sheep – Adam asked Duncan if he would come into his farm to help him run the business side of things. Duncan did and later came into the business with Adam.
The farm park itself attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, has a restaurant and its own camping and caravan site. The caravan site has 40 grass pitches, 16 with electrical hook-up and costs from £14.35 a night. Visitors to the farm park, can many rare breeds and can interact with the animals from feeding through to handling new born chicks. Some of the animals have also been used in films including oxen in Braveheart and one of Adam’s rams was used in Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe.
“Adam’s partner who works herself in
television, suggested he applied for a position as a presenter on Countryfile, as the BBC were looking for new talent. He did – and got the job
Top to bottom: Joe Henson and son Adam with Oxen; Joe Henson and John Neave, 1971; artist drawing Joe Henson with horse
taking time to travel the world, partly funded by working on farms in different countries. He then came home to join the family business and became the third generation tenant farmer on land at Guiting Power, near Bourton on the Water. Adam now lives in the main farm house with his partner and their two children Ella, aged 16 and Alfie, 12. Today at Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park Adam talked about the fact that although his name is attached 22
“One thing I’ve learned about the business is to surround yourself with those who complement you. They can see things you cannot see and together you can ensure the business grows,” Adam said. Today the farm has the most modern equipment available to ensure the farm is sustainable in the future and embraces conservation. The giant machinery used to harvest, plant and care for the land is all run via a satellite navigation system so that fertilisers are distributed efficiently, the make-up of the soil is mapped accurately and land is ploughed accurately ensuring fuel efficiency and cost savings. Some of the machinery costs £250,000 a unit. www.alocallife.co.uk
”
The Television Personality Adam told the audience how his own father Joe had often been featured on television so he grew up used to seeing a camera crew around the farm. Joe was a regular with Angela Rippon on a show called In The Country and he also appeared with Johnny Morris on Animal Magic. Then some years ago, Adam’s partner who works herself in television, suggested he applied for a position as a presenter on Countryfile, as the BBC were looking for new talent. He did – and got the job. Since then he’s travelled the country meeting interesting people and visiting beautiful places to find out about rural life across the UK. Now he
films largely at home with two self-shooting directors talking about day-to-day life and issues on the farm. More recently he became involved in Lambing Live with Kate Humble – an idea which Adam didn’t believe would ever catch on. He didn’t think watching lambing night after night would hold an audience. However the programme has proved immensely popular. Adam talked about loving his work in television and singled out John Craven and Kate Humble for particular praise. John Craven for being a genuine, professional presenter who told life ‘as it was’ during a difficult time for farming when the industry was besieged by problems such as the ‘egg crisis’ and ‘foot and mouth’. Kate Humble, Adam said, was the queen of live television, able to move seamlessly from shot to shot even if everything was being filmed in real time. As for the future of farming, Adam said he believed farming was now on the crest of a wave and should be positive about the future. He talked of wanting to encourage young people into the industry - even if, like him, it might not be possible to actually buy a farm or own land. He said people’s growing need to know
the history of the food they eat, the ethics of how animals are treated and the movement towards more locally produced and sourced food – all made it an exciting time to be part of the farming industry. Adam has also written his first book – My Life on the Land – which is available online or in the shops - http://amzn.to/1ElldXA

reen tea has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years to treat everything from headaches to depression. Drinking Green tea is thought to boost weight loss, reduce cholesterol, combat cardiovascular disease, prevent cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The leaves are processed in such a way that supposedly leaves them richer in antioxidants. Green tea contains B vitamins, folate (naturally occurring folic acid), manganese, potassium, magnesium, caffeine and other antioxidants (notably catechins). All types of tea (green, black and oolong) are produced from the Camellia sinensis plant using different methods. Fresh leaves from the plant are steamed to produce green tea, while the leaves of black tea and oolong involve fermentation. The evidence supporting the magical properties of Green Tea is fairly inconclusive but there’s definitely less calories than in a cup of Green Tea than a latte, and less caffeine than a cup of tea. Green tea is a low calorie refreshing hot drink that definitely won’t do you any harm. What’s not to love?

RECIPE
pizza Makes 1 BIG pizza Tip
“There is nothing like good pizza. I find that the best ones tend to
be the simplest, with not too many ingredients on top, and a good tomato passata as the base. When making a pizza it’s important to be sure that it cooks from the bottom as well as on top. A hot pizza stone helps with this, or you can use a heated baking sheet. If you don’t do this you will have uncooked dough with a soggy base.

RECIPE METHOD
4. Knock back the dough, then let it rise again for a further 40 minutes.
1 hour, plus rising 1. For stage 1 of the dough, put the flour and yeast into a large bowl and mix in the water. Leave in a warm place (35–40°C) for 15–20 minutes until frothy. 2. Add all the ingredients for stage 2 and mix together to a dough using a wooden spoon and then your hands. Turn out on to a floured surface and knead for 10–15 minutes to develop the elasticity of the dough..5 3. Shape the dough into a ball and rub with olive oil to prevent a crust from forming. Place in a clean bowl, cover the bowl with a towel and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
5. When you are ready to make the pizza, preheat the oven to 250°C, and put a pizza stone or a large baking sheet in to heat. Turn the dough on to a lightly floured work surface and roll out into a rough rectangle or other shape that is about 2cm thick. Lift on to a large, semolina-dusted baking sheet. 6. For the topping, spread the passata evenly over the pizza base to within 1cm of the edge. Add the remaining topping ingredients, scattering them evenly, then drizzle the olive oil over all. 7. Slide the pizza on to the hot baking stone or baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes. Serve hot.
INGREDIENTS For the dough stage 1 30g type 00 flour 2 tsp dried yeast 60ml lukewarm water
For the dough stage 2
200g type 00 flour, plus extra for dusting ½ tsp salt 120ml lukewarm water 1 tbsp milk 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing semolina, for the baking sheet
