Congratulations on choosing to participate in the TEFL Seminar Program here at the University of Hawaii—Manoa HELP! We look forward to giving you a wonderful experience here to help you with your understanding of the best English Teaching Practices for assisting your students in Japan. We have prepared a website with information about the Seminar as well as pre-arrival information to assist you in coming to Hawaii prepared to make the best of this exciting professional development opportunity. We are eager to assist you and to answer all your questions. ARRIVAL IN HAWAII: After you arrive at the airport, it will take at least an hour to get through customs and immigration. If there is any problem at your port of entry, the immigration official can contact me on my cell phone at (808) 381-2686. I will be at the airport waiting outside the exit from the customs area. We will transport you and your baggage to Frear Hall, your dormitory on campus. You will have he rest of Sunday to explore the UH campus and get settled. Frequently asked questions about Hawaiʻi How is the weather in the summer? As you would expect in paradise, Hawaiʻi has a tropical and warm climate all year (70° to 85° Fahrenheit, 20° to 30° Celsius). It would be a good idea, however, to bring an umbrella as June 1 to November 1 is hurricane season. For 2015, meteorologists are predicting more tropical storms and hurricanes than usual due to El Niño conditions with warmer water.

FAQs

What clothes should I pack? Because of our climate and lifestyle, people in Hawaiʻi usually dress more casually than in other places. Casual clothing is appropriate for most situations. Light cotton and other cool washable clothing is recommended. Examples of items to pack:       

Shorts, jeans and/or long pants (thin, not too heavy) T-shirts, sleeveless tops, long sleeve tops (thin, not too heavy) skirts, sundresses swimsuit socks and underwear sun hat or visor running or walking shoes/flip-flops/sandals.

What happens upon arrival at Honolulu International Airport? Upon arrival at the port-of-entry, proceed to the terminal area for arriving passengers for inspection. Be sure you have ready to present to the CPB Officer:

TEFL Seminar Program

Program Description: The One-Week TEFL Seminar Program is a 20-hour, intensive, activity-based teacher training program especially designed to meet the needs of in-service English teachers. Classes feature hands-on activities to support English language instruction, development of teaching materials, as well as discussion of practical issues related to English language instruction in an EFL context. Successful participants receive a certificate of completion from the University of Hawaii HELP Program, a unit of the renowned Department of Second Language Studies at UH Manoa.

Objectives: Teachers who complete this program will be able to:

use effective classroom management strategies in large classes Incorporate English activities into everyday classroom lessons use, adapt, and create a wide variety of English language learner materials form a supportive network with colleagues for on-going professional development reflect thoughtfully on each classroom experience as well as on personal and professional development

Schedule: The schedule includes 4 hours of classroom instruction or experiential learning activities. Classes include time for practice teaching English in English (TEE), and time for examining and adapting instructional materials for use in the participants’ schools in Japan.     

Discuss the assigned reading or pedagogical issue of the day Learn and practice a new technique Learn the teacher language needed to use the new technique Make or adapt materials for personal projects Reflect on the day’s lesson and preview assigned reading for the next day

In general, participants have two 2-hour classes in the morning. One focuses on introducing methods, techniques, and materials for teaching the four skills. The other class focuses on developing and practicing the techniques for teaching in English.
