5 IITians Who Gave the World Unique Start Ups. We share with you the success stories and key moments in the journey of top five unique start ups by IITians.
1) Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, Flipkart
In 2007, the two IITians began as an online retailer of books with an initial investment of INR 4 lakh from a flat in Bangalore.
In the year 2011 the Bansal duo took on Mime360 (music streaming portal) and Chakpak.com (digital catalogue).
Flipkart is the best online shopping portal, in 2014 Flipkart hits $1 billion in sales and took over online fashion portal Myntra.
2) Rohit Bansal and Kunal Bahl, Snapdeal
In 2010, Rohit Bansal (an IITian) along with his friend Kunal Bahl (a Wharton graduate) inaugurated Snapdeal.com – a daily deals site (at the initial stage).
In the series of acquisitions, Snapdeal.com today has about 20 million members, more than 500 product categories and over 20,000 sellers.
The company has strong financial backup by leading global investors like Intel Capital, eBay Inc. and Nexus Venture Partners.
3)Bhavesh Aggarwal, Ola Cabs.
This computer engineer graduate from IIT Bombay once devised an idea to give the country an asset-lite and tech-intensive cab service.
Available in five cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune, Ola Cabs service can be booked through phone call or mobile application available for free.
This unique service plans to expand its service to other cities within a few years.
4) Sankalp Agrawal and Sanchit Garg, Travel Triangle
The childhood friends and graduates from IIT launched an online travel service company from a garage in Noida.
TravelTriangle.com is a registered product of Holiday Triangle Travel Pvt. Ltd. founded in 2010 by two IIT post-graduates.
The duo hired Prabhat Gupta their third friend, who is also an IITian as a core development member.
5) Ambarish Gupta and Pallav Pandey, Knowlarity
Founded in 2009 by two IITians launched a new venture called Knowlarity, a cloud telephony company.
The service was created to cater to the need for technology for country’s SMEs.
The company created a voice application service platform hosted on the cloud or common servers.
