PITTURA LECTIO DIVINA

PRESENTAZIONE Questo catalogo raccoglie le opere di cinque allievi di Laura Grosso, da lei avviati al disegno e alla pittura per assecondare e guidare un'esigenza espressiva che appartiene a ciascuno di noi.

Non entro nel merito della qualità pittorica di queste opere, non è il mio compito, ma vorrei cogliere l'occasione per interrogarmi sulla ragione profonda che ci rende desiderosi di rappresentare il mondo.

Perché sappiamo correre? Perché sappiamo emettere suoni? Le risposte a queste domande, e a domande simili, ci appaiono piuttosto facili: si tratta di abilità che condividiamo con gli altri animali, impegnati come noi nella lotta per la sopravvivenza. Fuggire dai predatori, inseguire le prede, spaventare i predatori, comunicare il pericolo o gli stati d'animo... ma perché disegnare, dipingere, rappresentare il mondo, anche solo riproponendo campiture di colore come fa l'arte non figurativa?

La prima pittura rupestre risale a quasi 50.000 anni fa ed è probabile che sia opera di un Neandertaliano: dischi rossicci su una parete rocciosa a El Castillo, nel sud della Penisola Iberica. Si può considerare il primo passo verso la scrittura? Sappiamo che per questa dobbiamo avanzare nella storia umana fino a 5.000 anni fa, un balzo enorme, spostandoci a Săliștea, in Romania. Prima, ci sono gli sviluppi figurativi di cui l'esempio più antico sembra sia quello della grotta di Chauvet, nella Francia meridionale, risalente a circa 40.000 anni fa.

Qual è l'esigenza espressa da quel preistorico "artista" iberico? Quale quella dell'uomo di Chauvet?

Il mistero affascina gli studiosi che, in uno sforzo interdisciplinare, cercano risposte nella protostoria delle religioni, nell'estro figurativo di sacerdoti, o di semplici "devianti". Un fatto però è certo: se esistono disegnatori, pittori, scultori capaci di lasciarci a bocca aperta davanti alla loro maestria nel rappresentare la realtà così come appare ai nostri occhi, non c'è individuo che non sappia, anche nel modo più semplice e rozzo, riuscire a dare un'idea del mondo impugnando una matita, proprio come fanno i bambini nei primi scarabocchi a cui si possa attribuire un significato.

Ecco la meraviglia vera, quella più profonda: il vedere quei segni affinarsi, appropriarsi del colore, della prospettiva, dell'ombra e della luce. Ecco il motivo per cui dobbiamo fermarci a contemplare non solo le opere dei maestri, ma anche quelle degli allievi. La domanda da cui è partita questa mia breve introduzione può trovare forse una risposta proprio nella contemplazione dell'affinarsi di un tratto, nel dialogare nuovo tra due colori.

C’è un autoritratto di Rembrandt, esposto a Londra, dipinto forse nell’anno della sua morte, il 1669, in cui l’artista olandese, al culmine della sua ricerca pittorica, si rappresenta sullo sfondo di due grandi cerchi. Come non pensare ai dischi di El Castillo? Come non vedeßre in quella tela un riassunto? Il punto di partenza e quello di arrivo di tutta la ricerca pittorica? E come non chiedersi se dietro le sue spalle l’anziano pittore non nasconda tutte le fasi di ogni ricerca pittorica che da quei dischi è cominciata?

PRESENTATION This catalog contains the works of five students that started drawing and painting in the art classes of Laura Grosso in order to favour and drive the expressive need that each of us has. I will not go into details about the pictorial quality of these works as it is not my duty, but I would like to take this opportunity to ask myself some questions about the profound reason that makes us so eager to represent the world.

Why do we know how to run? Why do we make sounds? The answers to these and other similar questions are rather easy: these are skills that we share with other animals, as we engaged in the fight for survival. Escaping from predators, chasing our prey, scaring predators, communicating danger or moods... but why do we draw, paint or represent the world even just reiterating fields of color as non-figurative art does?

The first cave paintings date back almost 50,000 years ago and are likely to be the work of a Neanderthal man: reddish disks on a rock wall in El Castillo in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

Can this be considered the first step towards writing? We know that for this we must advance in human history to 5000 years ago: a huge leap moving to Săliştea in Romania. Before then, there were the figurative developments of which the oldest example seems to be that of the Chauvet cave in southern France, dating back to about 40,000 years ago.

What is the need expressed by the prehistoric Iberian “artist”? And that of the Chauvet’s man?

The mystery fascinates researchers who, in an interdisciplinary effort, look for answers in the early history of religions, in the figurative oestrous of priests, or in simple “deviants”. But one thing is certain: if there are drawers, painters and sculptors that are able to leave us gaping in front of their skill in representing reality as it appears to our eyes, there is no individual who does not know, even in the most simple and crude way, how to produce an idea of the world by holding a pencil, just like children in their first scribbles to which you can attribute a meaning.

Here is the real and deeper wonder: that you can see those signs getting sharper, appropriating color, perspective, light and shadow. That’s why we have to stop and contemplate not only the works of the masters, but also those of students. The question that started this brief introduction can perhaps find its answer, precisely, in the contemplation of the sharpening of a mark and in a new dialogue between two colors.

There is a self-portrait by the Dutch artist Rembrandt probably painted in the year of his death, 1669, at the height of his career that is exhibited in London, in which there are two big circles in the background. How can we not think of the El Castillo discs? It is difficult to not see in that canvas a summary? The point of departure and arrival of his whole painting research? And how can you not wonder whether the elder painter does not hide all the phases of every pictorial research that those records began?

Pittura Lectio Divina. Lo Studio di Pittura di Laura Grosso

“Bisogna trattare la natura attraverso il cilindro, la sfera, il cono, il tutto messo in prospettiva…

Le linee parallele all'orizzonte esprimono la larghezza, che è un aspetto della natura, o se preferite dello spettacolo che il Pater Omnipotens Aeterne Deus dispiega davanti ai vostri occhi. Le linee perpendicolari all'orizzonte rappresentano la profondità… ...Bisogna inchinarsi di fronte a quest'opera perfetta. Da essa tutto deriva, per essa noi esistiamo, dimentichiamo il resto.” Paul Cezanne La Pittura nasce come desiderio, nell’essere umano, del rapporto dialettico con la natura, meditato e profondo, non la si può concepire al di fuori di questo rapporto. In Pittura tutta la ricerca muove da un dialogo con le cose: nature morte o paesaggi o corpo umano o persone, tutti sono ‘motivi’ ai quali il pittore cerca di carpire un segreto attraverso ore di solitaria contemplazione.

L’esercizio della Pittura somiglia alla meditazione della ‘Lectio Divina’, lettura della ‘Parola di Dio’, che in questo caso è incarnata nella Natura: si parte dalla percezione di essa, dall'apertura nei confronti di tutti i suoi aspetti, e, attraverso l’osservazione attenta di ogni connessione, si giunge al senso di unità che emana dalla coscienza della propria presenza in essa. Analisi della realtà e introspezione formano progressivamente la ‘coscienza’ del pittore, che gli permette di cogliere la propria percezione e di renderla, attraverso uno stile personale e nuovo, ma elaborato sulla conoscenza delle forme del passato.

Il rapporto tra pittura e percezione implica un processo di selezione e sistematizzazione del dato sensibile che, nell'ambito della tradizione occidentale, è affidato ad alcuni elementi di individuazione: la linea, il piano, il volume, il colore.

La pittura, come ogni linguaggio nell’arte, non va considerata alla stregua di un calco della realtà.

Ogni pittore ha utilizzato a modo suo i materiali precedentemente accumulati, ci sono dei codici iconografici, ed è lavorando sui codici del passato che il pittore ne produce di nuovi. Da che esiste la pittura, gli artisti che vi si sono applicati hanno svolto attraverso di essa un discorso che riguarda non solo le cose riprodotte, ma anche il modo di riprodurle.

Nel momento in cui i pittori si rendono conto di agire su schemi visivi ereditati dalla tradizione, e di operare nel senso di una evoluzione che li renda atti ad esprimere nuovi aspetti della conoscenza, la pittura acquista una duplice funzione: oltre ad essere un linguaggio sviluppa una sua dimensione interna che è la riflessione sulla specificità dei suoi mezzi espressivi.

Painting Lectio Divina. Laura Grosso’s Painting Studio

“Deal with nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone, all of them placed in perspective... lines parallel to the horizon give breadth, a section of nature, or if you prefer, of the spectacle spread before our eyes by the 'Pater Omnipotens Aeterne Deus'. Lines perpendicular to that horizon give depth. ... We must bow before this perfect work. Everything derives from it, for it we exist; forget the rest.� Paul Cezanne Painting was born from the human desire to find a dialectical relationship with nature. Meditated and deep, painting cannot be conceived outside of this relationship. In painting, all research moves from a dialogue with things: still lifes or landscapes or human body or persons. All of these are 'reasons' for which the painter tries to steal a secret by the means of hours of solitary contemplation. The practice of painting resembles the meditation of the 'Lectio Divina', the reading of the 'Word of God' which, in this case, is embodied in Nature: starting from the perception of it, opening towards all its aspects, and, through careful observation of each connection. You come to the sense of unity that emanates from the consciousness of its presence in it. The analysis of reality and introspection gradually form the 'conscience' of the artists, which allows them to grasp their own perception and render it through a new and personal style but elaborated on the knowledge of the forms of the past.

The relationship between painting and perception implies a process of selection and the systematization of perceptible data that, in the Western tradition, is entrusted to identifying elements: line, plane, volume and color.

Painting, like any artistic language, should not be considered as a copy of reality.

Every painter has used the previously accumulated (historical) material in their own way. There are iconographic codes, and it is by working from those past codes that the artist produces new ones. Ever since painting has existed, the artists who have employed it have carried out a discourse that concerns not only the reproduced things, but also the way to reproduce them.

At a time when painters realize they act on visual schemes that are inherited from tradition, and they work towards an evolution which makes them suitable to express new aspects of knowledge, painting acquires a dual function: in addition to being a language, it develops an inner dimension which is the reflection on the specificity of its own means of expression.

Silvana Troisi è nata a Bari e vive a Roma dal 1973. Laureata in psicologia svolge il suo lavoro di psicoterapeuta e di orientatrice scolastica e professionale e dipinge.

Ha studiato pittura dal 1957 al 1960 prima a Torino e poi a Bergamo.

Le sue nature morte sono state esposte nel 1964 a Portofino, mentre nel 1972 una serie di collage astratti sono stati in mostra al Palazzo delle esposizioni di Roma. Dal 2012 partecipa al progetto ‘Pittura Lectio Divina’ di Laura Grosso. Nel 2013 ha frequentato la scuola di nudo nell’atelier di Celestino Ferraresi.

Silvana Troisi was born in Bari and has lived in Rome since 1973. She has a degree in psychology and works as a psychotherapist, educational and professional guidance counselor and paints.

She studied painting from 1957 to 1960; first in Turin and then in Bergamo.

Her still lifes were exhibited in 1964 in Portofino, while in 1972 a series of abstract collages were displayed at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. Since 2012 she has participated in the project 'Painting Lectio Divina' Laura Grosso. In 2013, she attended the Study of the Nude in the studio of Celestino Ferraresi.

“Silvana è una curiosa dell’arte in tutte le sue forme, perchè non c’è manifestazione più sincera dell’uomo, che sveli il suo animo nel profondo, e lei è interessata proprio a questa profondità, non a caso ha scelto di lavorare come psicologa. Tempo fa usava comporre quadri astratti, nei quali poteva giocare col colore a suo piacimento, secondo un senso di decorazione, che possiede naturale.

La pittura figurativa, ‘dal vero’, le ha offerto l’occasione di emanciparsi dalla superficie, proprio grazie alla sfida offerta dal vero che di per sé, al contrario, tenderebbe a riportare ogni cosa all’apparenza. La volontà di confrontarsi con questo denuncia in lei quell’umiltà che è premessa indispensabile per qualsiasi conoscenza, in particolare nella pittura e nell’arte.

Spesso si rammarica di non riuscire ad andare completamente al di là della descrizione degli oggetti, come vorrebbe, ma mi pare molto bene avviata su questa strada e in alcuni casi raggiunge quella poesia che, prima di ogni altra qualità, si richiede alla pittura, che emana dall’equilibrio miracoloso e perfetto delle potenze che abitano l’anima.”

"Silvana is a inquirer of art in all of its forms, because there is no other manifestation more sincere of mankind. In this, she reveals her deep soul and is interested in precisely this depth. Not surprisingly, she chose to work as a psychologist. Some time ago, she used to compose abstract paintings, in which she could play with color at will according to a sense of decoration, of which she has a natural feeling.

Figurative painting, 'from life', has offered her the chance to break free from the superficial, thanks to the challenge offered by reality, which in itself, on the contrary, tends to reduce everything to appearances. The will to deal with this charges in her that humility that is a prerequisite for any knowledge, particularly in painting and art.

Often she regrets not being able to go completely beyond the description of the objects, as she would like, but it seems to me that she has started on this path very well and in some cases, she reaches the poetry that, being the first of all other qualities, is required in painting and which emanates the miraculous and perfect balance of powers that inhabit the soul."

Giovanni Bonfiglio è nato a Genova, dove, laureato in ingegneria elettronica ha lavorato nell’industria della difesa fino al 2000, anno in cui ha iniziato a dedicarsi alla Pittura a tempo pieno. È stato attivo collaboratore nel progetto ‘Pittura Lectio Divina’ di Laura Grosso, fin dai suoi esordi. Ha esposto i suoi lavori in diverse personali e collettive in Italia.

Ha avuto il privilegio di frequentare intimamente l’Atelier di Celestino Ferraresi negli ultimi quattro anni della vita del maestro, il quale così ne parla nel 2013: “Giovanni Bonfiglio capitò nel mio studio insieme ad una amica comune, mi chiese se poteva mostrarmi alcuni suoi lavori… copiava un po’ maldestramente cartoline illustrate senza vivere alcuna emozione della luce né del colore di quel paesaggio rappresentato… … certamente ha imparato a guardare la pittura, e a guardare le cose attraverso la pittura… studia con cocciutaggine la forma, osserva il colore cercando di non tradirne l’autenticità ed il sentimento… talvolta con stupore ammette le sue scoperte... e da un po’ si avventura a raccontare il tempo passato e le sue nostalgie.

Bravo Giovanni, è così che si fa, perché la pittura è un linguaggio nel quale, imparando a intenderlo, vi si possono scoprire insegnamenti per la vita e anche sentimenti…

Spero che non l’abbandoni mai l’umiltà di misurarsi con se stesso né l’intento di proseguire l’avventurosa strada della scoperta.”

Giovanni Bonfiglio was born in Genoa, where he graduated in electrical engineering and worked in the defense industry until 2000, when he began to devote himself full-time to painting.

He has been an active collaborator in the project 'Painting Lectio Divina Laura Grosso’, since its inception. He has exhibited his work in several solo and group exhibitions in Italy.

He had the privilege of closely attending the atelier of Celestino Ferraresi in the last four years of the master's life - who thus spoke in 2013: "Giovanni Bonfiglio came into my studio together with a mutual friend and he asked me if he could show me some of his works ... they were little awkwardly copied picture postcards without emanating any kind of emotion, light or color in the landscapes that were represented... ... he certainly has learned to look at painting, and to look at things through painting... doggedly studying the form and observing the color, and trying not to betray the authenticity and the feeling... sometimes, with amazement, he admits his discoveries... he has recently even ventured to talk about the time we have spent together nostalgically.

Bravo Giovanni, that's how you do it; because painting is a language in which, learning to understand it, you may discover lessons for life and also feelings...

I hope you never abandon the humility to confront yourself nor the intention to continue the adventurous road of discovery."

Lucia Costantini è nata a Roma, dove risiede, lavora e dipinge.

Laureata in Scienze politiche, ha frequentato nel 1993 un corso teorico-pratico di pittura steineriana presso la sede romana della Società Antroposofica, nel quale ha iniziato a interessarsi alla potenzialità del colore. Dal 2013 è entrata a fare parte del gruppo di pittori che operano nello Studio di pittura di Laura Grosso.

Nel 2015 ha frequentato la scuola di nudo nell’atelier di Celestino Ferraresi.

Lucia Costantini was born in Rome, where she lives, works and paints.

She graduated in Political Science.

In 1993, she attended theoretical and practical painting of the Waldorf School at the Rome headquarters of the Anthroposophical Society, in which she became interested in the potential of color. Since 2013, she has become part of the group of painters who work in the painting studio of Laura Grosso.

In 2015, she attended the Study of the Nude in the studio of Celestino Ferraresi.

Osservare senza pregiudizi. Utilizzare i colori in modo di dimenticare ciò che si sta dipingendo. Guardare il mondo con gli occhi aperti, comprendendo la profondità e il significato di ciò che si sta osservando. Pensare in pittura con gli occhi, la mente, il cuore e la mano.

Prendere decisioni percettive non è solo una sfida nella pittura, ma anche nel pensiero stesso. La risposta sta nella nostra coscienza.

Krishnamurti scrive: “Bisogna essere molto serio, non irriverente, non casuale ma premuroso, per capire il pensiero umano... Dobbiamo essere in grado di penetrare con molta attenzione, di essere cauti, di avere una profonda osservazione, in modo di capire che cosa succede sia fuori che dentro di sé. L'attività psicologica verso l'interno supera sempre quella verso l’esterno; comunque le molte regole, le sanzioni, e le decisioni che possiamo avere esteriormente, sono tutte frantumate dai nostri desideri psicologici; le paure e le ansie, e sopratutto il desiderio di sicurezza.” * Lucia sta tentando questa strada in pittura.

Possiamo vedere la tranquillità della sua percezione interiore nei suoi dipinti. Lei riesce ad armonizzare i colori e rappresentare il mondo esterno nei suoi quadri in modo gioioso, ma profondamente consapevole”.

Observe without prejudice. Use the paint in a way that you forget you are painting. Look at the world with open eyes but understand the depth and significance of what you are observing. Think in paint with your eyes, mind, heart and hand. Making perceptual decisions is not only a challenge to painting but also to thinking. The answer lies in our consciousness.

Krishnamurti writes: “One has to be very serious, not flippant, not casual but concerned, to understand human thought ... We must be able to penetrate very carefully, hesitantly, with deep observation, to understand together what is happening both out there and inwardly. The inward psychological activity always overcomes the outer, however many regulations, sanctions, decisions you may have outwardly, all these are shattered by our psychological desires, fears and anxieties, by the longing for security. * Lucia is attempting this path in painting. We can see the quiet inner perception of Lucia’s self in her paintings. She is harmonizing the colours and representing the outside world on the canvas in a joyful yet deeply conscious way”.

Angelica Fortuzzi è nata a Roma, dove vive e insegna educazione artistica nella scuola pubblica.

Dopo il Liceo Artistico si è laureata in Architettura nel 1995 e subito dopo ha svolto un programma di insegnamento di ‘Grafica digitale’ nell’ambito universitario.

Il padre, architetto e pittore a sua volta, è stato il suo primo maestro, introducendola al disegno prima ancora che alla scrittura.

Angelica Fortuzzi was born in Rome where she lives and teaches art education in a public school.

After art school, she graduated in Architecture in 1995 and soon after she attended a ‘Digital Graphics teaching program’ within the university.

Her father, an architect and painter himself, was her first teacher, introducing her to drawing even before writing.

Sono architetto e Dottore di ricerca in Progettazione Urbana. La ricerca è la chiave che caratterizza il mio percorso esistenziale.

I colori sono la materia e il mezzo espressivo che prediligo e sento più affine. L'osservazione, l'approfondimento, "vedere" in profondità se stessi, insieme a quello che si sta osservando.

Una forma di meditazione, di connessione profonda alla Vita. L'espressione artistica è qualcosa di molto profondo e istintivo. È stabilire un silenzio interno, aprendosi a una relazione, predisponendosi all'ascolto, al vedere, all'esprimere quanto veduto e sentito.

Masse, luci e colori.

Quando i colori "chiamano" altri colori e forme, l'atto del dipingere è già in sé realizzazione.

Rappresenta la pienezza del presente, il sintonizzarsi con se stessi come parte del Tutto.”

I am an architect with a PhD in Urban Design.

Research is the key that characterizes my existential journey.

Colors are the raw materials and means of expression that I prefer and feel closest to: the observation, the deepening of “seeing” into oneself, along with what you are observing.

A form of meditation, a deep connection to Life. Artistic expression is something very deep and instinctive.

It is determined by an internal silence, by opening up to a relationship, by preparing to listen and to see, by expressing what is seen and heard. Masses, light and color.

When colors “call” other colors and shapes, the act of painting is in itself realization.

It represents the fullness of the present, the synchronization of oneself as part of the Whole.”

Barbara Blandamura è nata a Napoli e vive a Roma dal 1974. Laureata in Scienze dell’Educazione, frequenta lo Studio di Pittura di Laura Grosso dal 2011.

Barbara Blandamura was born in Naples but has lived in Rome since 1974. She has a degree in Science of Education and she has attended the Painting Studio of Laura Grosso since 2011.

“Barbara possiede per vie naturali una facilità di semplificazione, le forme sono evocate dall’interno di sé come musica, vengono percepite a livello viscerale: in questo sta la sua potenza espressiva.

Il suo occhio afferra, in una visione precisa, qualcosa del vero che le è impossibile dimenticare, la sua mano è guidata da questo intuito, tanto che le diviene difficile e a volte impossibile esercitare un controllo su di essa.

Guidata da questa ispirazione forte e sicura, dipinge in grande concentrazione, come nel sonno, si lascia completamente trasportare dal sentimento che avverte dentro di se.

La sua maniera di lavorare è veloce e questo conferisce ai suoi studi una particolare freschezza, mentre la sua speciale capacità di enfatizzare le armonie li arricchisce di un valore decorativo.

“Barbara possesses a natural ease for simplification, her forms are evoked by her inner self as music and they are perceived viscerally.

Her expressive power is in this quality.

Her eye catches a distinct vision; something true that is impossible to forget. Her hand is guided by this intuition so much so that it becomes difficult and sometimes impossible to exercise control over it.

Driven by this strong and confident inspiration while painting with high concentration, similar to when one is sleeping, Barbara is left completely carried away by the feeling that he finds herself in.

Her way of working is fast and this brings to her studies a particular freshness, while she has a special ability to emphasize the harmonies by enriching them with a decorative value.

Ha acquisito prestissimo una sua proprietà di linguaggio, come se avesse sempre dipinto. Questo linguaggio è caratterizzato da una linea molto sicura, che passa con grande scioltezza dalle sinuosità alle asprezze geometriche. Similmente anche i colori si muovono all’interno di una gamma che va dalla estrema brillantezza ai vibranti grigi.

Non a caso predilige l’olio, materia prettamente pittorica, che le offre il massimo delle possibilità espressive”.

She obtained her own command of the language quickly, as if she had always painted. Her pictorial language is characterized by a very confident line which passes with great fluency from a sinuosity to a geometric roughness.

Similarly, her colors move inside a range that go from an extreme brilliance to vibrating grays.

Not surprisingly she prefers oil, which is a strictly pictorial material and offers her the maximum of expressive possibilities”.

Laura Grosso è nata a Bari. Vive e opera a Roma dove si è diplomata in Pittura nell’Accademia di Belle Arti alla scuola di Alberto Ziveri, al quale Celestino Ferraresi faceva allora da assistente.

Ha esposto in Italia e all’estero, dove le sue opere sono entrate in collezioni private e pubbliche.

Il suo progetto per la trasmissione fedele della Pittura esclusivamente ‘storica’ nasce nel 2007 con il nome di ‘Sophia: Pittura Lectio Divina’.

Dapprima raduna apprendisti nelle parrocchie a titolo gratuito, fino a quando, nel 2009, si stabilisce nello studio romano che la pittrice condivide con Anthony Lombardi, situato nell’abitazione in cui i due pittori vivono insieme ai loro tre figli, nel quartiere Nuovo Salario, che diviene uno spazio per dipingere aperto a chiunque desideri esercitare l’arte-mestiere della pittura.

Il progetto nasce dalla convinzione che la pittura, e in particolare le conquiste della Pittura Moderna, possa e debba essere trasmessa, anche a chi non ne ha avuto mai esperienza, in una sorta di palestra urgente e indispensabile per l’individuo e per la collettività.

Non è perciò una scuola accademica, ma un laboratorio in cui la guida lavora insieme a pittori e apprendisti di diversi livelli, rigorosamente ‘dal vero’, sui temi classici della Pittura: Natura Morta, Figura, Paesaggio.

A ora il progetto ha al suo attivo 30 partecipanti i quali si incontrano anche per discutere di pittura e di storia in conferenze-dibattiti aperti, e delle varie tecniche pittoriche in laboratori a tema.

Questa mostra intende ricordare con gratitudine il maestro Celestino Ferraresi, appena scomparso, perchè si è adoperato con lealtà e passione per tutta la vita alla Pittura e al suo insegnamento fedele.

Laura Grosso was born in Bari. She lives and works in Rome where she graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Alberto Ziveri, to which Celestino Ferraresi was then an assistant. She has exhibited in Italy and abroad, where her works have entered into private and public collections.

Her project for the faithful transmission of exclusively ‘historical’ painting was founded in 2007 under the name ‘Sophia: Painting Lectio Divina’.

At first, apprentices gathered without charge in church parishes until 2009, when the project settled in the studio in Rome that the artist shares with Anthony Lombardi, located in their house where the two artists live with their three children in the Nuovo Salario district. The project provides an open space to anyone who wishes to practice the art-craft of painting.

The project stems from the belief that painting, in particular the achievements of modern painting, can and should be passed on, even to those who have never had experience with painting; in a sort of ‘urgent’ gym that is indispensable for the individual and for the community.

It is therefore, not an academic school, but a laboratory where the leadership works together with painters and apprentices of different levels, painting strictly ‘from life’ - the classical themes of painting: Still Life, Figure, Landscape.

At present, the project has 30 active participants who also meet to discuss painting, the history of painting in open conferences-debates, and various painting techniques in thematic workshops.

This exhibition aims to commemorate with gratitude the master Celestino Ferraresi, who has recently passed away. Celestino worked with loyalty and passion for all of his life towards painting and his faithful teaching of it.
