In 2010 the Royal Kerckhaert Horseshoe Factory introduced Liberty horseshoe nails - a nail evolution!

Liberty are innovative, uncompromising horseshoe nails, designed and made by Kerckhaert, from start to finish.

Liberty horseshoe nails are a perfect fit in Kerckhaert horseshoes and have many improvements, compared to traditionally made horseshoe nails from other brands.

In order to make horseshoe nails of superior quality, Kerckhaert had to completely reinvent the traditional manufacturing technology.

Liberty horseshoe nails are available both as traditional (steel) horseshoe nails and with the additional option of Copper (Cu) Shield Technology™.

Liberty Cu have the same characteristics as all Liberty horseshoe nails. Additionally the copper does not rust or wear inside the hoof and when used on a daily basis hoof wall, white line and sole are stronger and healthier.

Liberty Cu horseshoe nails are an innovation, not a luxury item

Unlike to what you might think, Liberty Cu horseshoe nails are not a luxury item. Maintaining strong, sound hooves is equally important to all horses, including every riding horse that is used for recreational purposes.

Every time a farrier drives a nail into a horse’s hoof, this damages the horn material. And because traditional horseshoe nails tend to rust, this weakens the hoof wall even more.

Kerckhaert are the first to deal with this once and for all, thanks to Cu Shield Technology™.

The copper shield does not rust or wear off inside the hoof wall, so horses hooves are protected for the entire shoeing cycle.

When Liberty Cu horseshoe nails are used on a daily basis, most farriers will notice that – unlike with traditional horseshoe nails – horses hooves stay in great condition.

The horn material at the white line will be elastic and healthy, with less staining around the nail holes and the hoof wall keeps its strength. And because the copper shield is very smooth and the points of the nails are very sharp, there is less chipping on the outside of the hoof and less damage from within.

After several shoeings with Liberty Cu these benefits become even more obvious.

Research study into the effects of horseshoe nails made with Cu Shield Technology™

In 2016 the first part of an independent research study into the effects of horseshoe nails made with Copper Shield Technology™ was carried out in Edinburgh, UK by Dr. Sue Kempson BSc PhD at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies with Stephen Mitchell BSc MSc at the School of Biological Sciences. A second study is being carried out in 2017.

The team studied the health of equine hoof material following the use of Liberty Cu nails. The research focused on the

presence of bacteria in hoof trimming samples, taken from the front feet of horses, shod by different farriers across the UK over a period of 7 months.

One of the feet was shod using Liberty Cu horseshoe nails and the other with standard steel nails for comparison. The samples were subjected to both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.
