'Walk the talk' of Alpha Sigma Alpha Each and every one of us shares the burdenfor what the sorority is now and in the future BY SUZANNE KILGANNON PRESTON, BI National President
eing national president is already as interesting as I thought it would be. I have enjoyed the reactions of friends. neighbors and chapter sisters. Most are very excited; some ask isn't that a college thing? And. of course, some of my college friends who knew me back when are sWJ trying to picture me in such a role. Talk about paradigm shifts! One friend of mine thinks I am out of my mind. She thinks I am crazy to bear this responsibility. She is correct. there is a great deal of responsibility, but she is wrong to believe that I bear it alone. My new role has made me a one-person public relations show for sorority, but it truly is each and every one of us who shares the burden for what Alpha Sigma Alpha is now and in the future. When we are recognized as sorority women or. more importantly, as Alpha Sigma Alphas, people make assumptions about us. From the bumper sticker on the car as we sit frustrated in traffic to the letters we wear mowing the lawn to how we leave the hotel after our formal. we leave a lasting impression about what it is to be an Alpha Sigma Alpha. As we celebrate our 95th anniversary. Jet us renew our commitment that each of us is personally responsible for the images we portray. Remember, every one of us vowed that we would never do anything to denigrate the name of Alpha Sigma Alpha. After your next interaction with people in your community, ask the

following questions: • Did I do or say anything that I would not want on the front page of a newspaper? •would my family be proud of what I did? •What would the people I had contact with say about it? The women who came before us laid the groundwork for our success. Throughout history, they overcame disenchantment with Greek life, just like we must do now. As they did, we must rise above the criticism and walk the talk. It is no longer feasible to dismiss our critics by saying they just don't understand. If we sell ourselves as women who are responsible contributors to the community, then we sure better be doing that. With our Founders' Day upon us, we are a mere five years from our centennial. What better time is there to rededicate ourselves to integrating the ritual into our lives so that women in the future can enjoy what we offer? My friend has a daughter I doubt she will let join a sorority when she is older. It is a shame because 1 know all that I have enjoyed through my membership. I know the depth of the

Her daughter might never enjoy that. What have you done this Founders' Day to make sure she will? In honor of our 95th anniversary, take responsibility for doing something that will ensure our sorority is alive for that young girl and thousands like her. Happy Founders' Day.

National President Kim Ramsey Meyer, BB, opened the convention Wednesday afternoon and introduced the opening speaker, Dr. Sharon Whittaker. The evening ended with a southern barbecue. The highlight for many was the opportunity to get a view of the alligator in the lagoon just outside the dining room. Thursday morning there were two special breakfasts, the four-star chapter breakfast and the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation VIP donor breakfast. The first business meeting followed with introductions of all delegates, committee reports and the state of the sorolity address. Then delegates were off to workshops with subjects such as management by committee, membership education, ethics, Iisk management, AlphaNet, motivation, due process, scholarship, rush, A'i.A Foundation and The Phoenix. For the first time a program book was provided that included handouts from all workshops so delegates could benefit from information from all of the workshops.
Lunch was held in the midst of the marketplace, where booths were set up by national officers and chapters to share information and explain valious programs. Kizzy and Zigi, two Capuchin monkeys, were part of the entertainment provided, as well as calicatulists Jim Rungo and Michael Johnson and balloon artist Luis Campanelia. The afternoon presentation earned a standing ovation forT.J. Sullivan and Joel Goldman, who talked about friendship and AIDS. Delegates then had some free time plior to dinner where delegates and visitors had an opportunity to visit with others in their province or region. The evening featured a very wet but fun Alpha Olympics. Team members dodged rain showers to compete in a valiety of games, including seated volleyball, toilet tissue relay, water balloon toss and an obstacle relay. Each team also prepared a cheer that was scored by a panel of A'i.A judges at the end of the games. The evening ended with a bylaws forum to discuss proposed bylaws changes. N E National Wear Your Pin day is March 3, 1997 The National Panhellenic Conference is promoting March 3, 1997, as national Wear Your Pin day for the members of all NPC sororities. Using the slogan, "It's as simple as wearing your pin with pride," NPC is urging all sorority women, collegians and alumnae, to wear their sorority badge or letters on March 3. Among the materials being used to promote the event is the article by Alpha Sigma Alpha Collegiate Editor Nora Ten Broeck, BK, "A simple solution," which appeared in the Spring 1996 Phoenix. Nora wrote, "By putting on my badge, I was able to tell at least 100 people about Alpha Sigma Alpha and Greek life."

Women spend a year of their lives working to make the sorority and its chapters better BY ANDREA J. TUNIA, EI Director of Collegiate Chapter Services
F
or more than 30 years, Alpha Sigma Alpha has been hiring graduates to travel as representatives of the sorority. Although the position has had many titles in those 30 years - field secretary, traveling secretary, field representative, chapter consultant and currently, leadership consultant - the basic function has changed very little. To quote the 1976 edition of The Years Behind Us- A History of Alpha Sigma Alpha: 'The assignment consists of traveling throughout the country, visiting college chapters, offering counsel, guidance, and inspiration on promoting our sorority's goals and ideals. " This position description is still representative of what the leadership consultants do today. It takes a great deal of dedication to fulfill the role. These women have chosen to commit a year of their lives (sometimes more) to travel for Alpha Sigma Alpha. Four consultants currently are crisscrossing the country, dealing with an assortment of issues, including officer training, time management, financial management, recruitment and public relations. Over 75 women have been hired and worked in this position for the sorority. They come from a variety of chapters, 45 in all, with various histories - from struggling new groups to established award winners. Their individual collegiate experiences vary even more. Some have been president of their chapter or the campus panhellenic council while others have held few leadership roles within their chapter. There is one trait of consistency though; they have all been active, committed, well-rounded members.
THE PHOENIX OF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA
'The assignment
consists of traveling throughout the country, visiting college chapters, offering counsel, guidance, and inspiration on promoting our sorority's goals and ideals. " Leadership consultants have been there for many chapters in good times and in bad. A pinnacle of a consultant's experience arises from the glory of installing a new chapter or the celebration of achievement when a chapter attains a goal that they have aspired to fulfill. They are there in the hard times too, when a chapter is struggling. They counsel the chapter and strive to provide an action plan to help the chapter through these tough situations. Former consultants continue to
give to Alpha Sigma Alpha even after their traveling days are done. Current national president, Suzanne Kilgannon Preston, 81, traveled for the sorority. More than 18 of the women currently serving as national officers served as consultants. Still others continue to provide leadership by serving as committee members, collegiate chapter advisors and alumnae chapter officers. As Alpha Sigma Alpha continues to grow and strives to be the best it can be, each year a few good women will be needed to fulfill this vital role within the organization.
The search is on Alpha Sigma Alpha is currently taking applications for leadership consultants to serve during the 1997-98 academic year. Deadline for application is Jan. 10, 1997. If you or someone you know has the dedication it takes to be a leadership consultant, please contact Andrea J. Tunia, director of collegiate chapter services, at national headquarters, 417-869-0980 or ajtunia@pcis.net.

The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation accepted the opportunity to provide this high-quality program to chapters. Each collegiate chapter will receive a visit from a national officer who will facilitate the presentation of the program. The foundation will provide the educational materials, which include a video and facilitator's manual
