WHEREAS, November fifteenth, Nineteen Hundred fortyone marks four memorable decades of Alpha Sigma Alpha progress, AND WHEREAS, each successive year has brought its ever increasing number of loyal Alpha Sigma Alphas to uphold the standards and emulate the ideals upon which our beloved sorority was founded, THEREFORE, be it hereby known that the National Council calls every member of Alpha Sigma Alpha to observe this fortieth anniversary of our Founding with loving grati.: tude to our Founders.

" It is not often that one predecessor become one's successor." These were the words of Evelyn G. Bell , our retiring P res ident, as she turned over th e gavel to \ Vilma Wilson Sharp, ou r newly elected P resident, on A ugust 8th, 1941.

Sigma Alpha did many unu sual things in their 1941 Convention. O ur former National V iceP resident is now Secretary, our Nationa l Treasurer becomes V ice-President and our National P resident become Director of Alumn<e Activitie . All thi was done in the interest of Alpha Sigma A lpha's progress.

WILMA WILSON SHARP National President

Wilma Wilson Sharp's recall to the national presidency of Alpha Sigma in this particular year of fraternity history seems altogether appropri路ate. Her profitable years of service to our sorority have been dominated by a steadfast conviction that fraternity membership is primarily an adventure in friendship. Upon this basic concept she has endeavored to build attitudes and carry through programs leading always to individual enrichment and growth.

Since her undergraduate days as a member of Zeta Zeta chapter, Wilma Sharp has envisioned sorority membership as a very real and worthy complement to education-a source of security and of inspiration, and an opportunity for learning valuable lessons.

It is unnecessary to recall to you her services to Alpha Sigma Alpha, all of which have been outstanding in their achievements. She has the rare ability to translate her idealistic principles into workable practices. This she has clone throughout her sorority career, first as National Registrar, to which office she was elected in 1922, as Iational President from 1930 to 1936 and as Educational Director from 1938 to 1941.

Hers is a leadership that is fortified by an unusually charming personality, a stimulating philosophy of life, a stubborn courage and an inner strength. As National President of Alpha Sigma Alpha she will "Give Full Measure."

Though we didn't found this grand old Alpha Sigma sisterhood, Though we didn't help our Phoenix rise from flame Though we haven't built a monument to founders great and good, \Ve Pi Pi'ers proudly tell our claim to fame!

We are proud to give to Alpha Sigma sisters everywhere Just the finest kind of girl whom you love well, Though we're selfishly quite glad that she is with us all the year, We're content to share her with you-Evelyn Bell!

She's the grandest sort of leader, of who ASA is proud; She's a friend whose standards show she lives our Creed; So our chapter leads this growing band who sings her praises loudTo our Evelyn, an Alpha Sig in word and deed!

And Alpha Sigma Alpha's from coast to coast join in this toast to Evelyn Bell. Her unusual capacity for leadership and her devotion to Alpha Sigma Alpha is found in the record of her sorority activities for the past fifteen years.

Her first ational experience was in 1926 路 when as president of Pi Pi chapter she represented them at the Convention in Chicago. Just

6 fifteen years later , she precided as National Presi,dent at the 1941 Convention in Chicago.

T hose intervening years were fill ed with service and loyalty to A lpha Sigma Alpha. With an app renticeship as a national committee chairman, Evelyn was elected to the National Council in 1930. For four yea rs she held the office of National R egistrar. In 1934, she was elected I ational V ice-President and with her characteri stic enthusiasm and boundless energy she undertook the successf ul organization of our alumn~.

President of Alpha Sigma Alpha. To this office she brought her rich gifts of executive ability, her happy faculty of gaining and giving cooperation, and her personal charm.

This experience, coupled with the initiative which she shows at all times made her the wi.animous choice of the convention for the newly created office, Director of Al umn~ Activities . In this position, she will have supervision of the Al umn~ Organizer, the Alumn~ Chapter Presidents and the Alumn~ Loyalty Committee.

Alpha Sigma Alpha's New Council Members KATHERIN E M. HALE National Treasurer

at Weymouth, Massachusetts High School. Then it was on to Bridgewater State Teacher 's College for two years. Following this, she entered Boston University, commuting from Weymouth.

History and mathematics were her majors. Between classes and her solo work in the Glee Club, Kitty worked in the School of Education office.

After she received a degree, in 1930, K itty returned to Boston University to qo graduate work and continue in the School of Education office.

She also found time to teach in the Chemistry laboratory at the B. U . Sargent School.

She received her Master 's degree in 1932, writing her thesis on "Preparation of para-toulene suiphonic acid by the oxidation of para-toulene suiphonic acid." It was during those two years that she joined A lpha Sig and Theta Thetq. chapter gained one of its most staunch supporters.

Kitty accepted a position in the Weymouth High School in 1932, where she continues to teach in the Science department.

Her sorority, traveling, and knitting are her three main hobbies, but her niece and nephews come in fo r a goodly sha re of her time and devotion.

Katherine M. Hale, better known to Theta Theta and the Boston Alumn~ Chapter as Kitty, was elected National Treasurer of A lpha Sigma Alpha at the 1941 Convention.

K itty first attended the Girl ' Latin School in Bo ton, and completed her elementary educat ion

T he last two years, K itty was PHOENIX correspondent for the Boston Alumn~ Chapte r. As one of their delegates, she attended th e regional conference in Washington, D. C. They are proud to give as their contribution to National, Kathe rine M. Hale, National Treasurer.

MARIE BRUNSMAN BERRY National Registrar

7 Besides assuming her duties as National Registrar for the coming three years, Marie is a Division Leader for the National Red Cross and a member of the A dvisory Draft Board. Her hobbies are gardening and badminton.

Her broad experience and variety of talents, all knit together with a winning personality and sparkling enthusiasm, make her a valuable addition to our Council.

Reelected Councilors POLLY SCHLOSSER National Vice-President

Marie Berry will be remembered by those attending the Interfraternity luncheon at the Edgewater Beach Hotel Convention as the charming and delightful Mistress of Ceremonies.

PHOENIX readers will recall her unique and original pages on the Fellowship Loan Fund during the past three years as Fellowship Chairman.

The city of A ltadena lists her as outstanding in civic and social affairs in her community in which she has served leading civic and cultural organizations. She is rarely without some important executive responsibility.

Los A ngeles Alumnce Chapter, which she helped to organize and of which she was President in 1935, is proud to have inherited her from Alpha Beta Chapter. Marie attended T eachers College at Kirksville, Missouri, and Normal, Illinois, but claims Bradley Polytechnic as her A lma Mater where her fi eld was Music and A rt.

She admits Illinois as her birth state, but California has been her home for sixteen yea r . She served Pasadena Tuesday Musicale as President in 1938 and Pasadena White Shrine as High Priestess in 1939. She was Chairman of the Committee publishing a H istory of A ltadena in 1940.

Polly Schlosser, Miss Polly as our Southern girls so affectionately call her, surely deserves a place in this record of elections. Not only has she balanced the budget and set up a new bookkeeping system for all of our chapters-but she also organized the Alumnce Loyalty Campaign and our Magazine Subscription Service. All these various duties, together with her school teaching activities, proved too much of a burden for even our efficient Polly and she regretfully tendered her resignation as National Treasurer of Alpha Sigma Alpha. However, our convention promptly elected her to the office of VicePresident. We know she will do her best to make her effo rts an intelligent interpretation of her office. A nd Polly's interpretation of the duties of an office will always be of the highest type.

ESTHER BUCHER National Secretary And once again we present Esther Bucher, National Secretary-not as a new Council Member or new as secretary; for she held that office from 1936 to 1938. Let me quote from her introduction then: "Because of her rare qualities of friendship, Esther will be happily remembered by the delegates to our 1932 nati onal convention where she rep resented the Kansas City A lumnce Chapter of which she was then president. Esther has been keenly intereste 1 in Alph a Sigma Alpha since the days when she was an initi ate at State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas . From 1934 to 1936 E ther se rved with efficiency and ympathetic insight as Na-

8 tiona! Fellowship Chairman. She was the gracious hostess of our 1936 convention. Esther has expressed her conception of sorority membership in these significant sentences : Sorority and Fellowship are companion words. We help ourselves as we help each other."

From 1936 to 1938, as National Secretary, and from 1938 to 1941 as National Vice-President, Esther has held to that conception. Alpha Sigma Alpha again greets their National Secretary, Esther Bucher.

GENEVIEVE S. LEIB National Editor Many of you have met her, and know that she is not particularly modest, in fact at times she is positively garulous; but tonight her mind has gone blank and her pen has gone dry.

Suffice it to say that the 1941 National Convention re-elected Genevieve S. Leib as Editor.

She has served Alpha Sigma Alpha in this capacity for seven years. She is still the oldest member (as to birthdays) on the Council. She has clone her best; through strikes and floods, sickness and health the PHOENIX has gone to press.

Af ter much persuasion, your Editor permitted me to add these few lines to her article : To praise Genevieve would be superfluous, the magazine she edits stands as a monument to her wisdom, capability and loyalty to Alpha Sigma Alpha. We, of the Indianapolis Alumme Chapter, feel we have given the best we possess, when we gave Genevieve to our National Organization.

Retiring Councilors THELMA STORTZ MOYER

Thelma Stortz Moyer, then Thelma Stortz, made her first national appearance in 1936 when she attended the I ational Convention at Breezy Point, where she directed Alpha Sigma Alpha's Pageant of Histoty. In 1937 she was appointed N ationa1 Examination Chairman and the 1938 Convention elected her to the office of I ational Secretary.

Thelma is a member of Kappa Kappa chapter, and while living in Pennsylvania helped to organize, and for two years served as President of the Eastern Pennsylvania Alumnce Chapter.

In 1937 she accepted a position as a Home Economics Teacher in Laurel, Delaware. Here she met Dr. Charles Moyer, and on September 2, 1939 Thelma became Mrs. Charles Moyer.

Continuing her achievements, Thelma acquired a new home, and on May 30, 1941, a son, Charles Franklin.

Showing the courage and loyalty that has always marked her relationship to Alpha Sigma Alpha, Thelma left husband and infant son to attend our 1941 convention, and it was with regret that we accepted her announcement to us that she could no longer serve as ational Secretary. We have appreciated her splendid work on our Council and wish her much joy in her role as wife and mother.

MARY MAY PAUL It is with regret that we announce that a prolonged illness of Mary Mae Paul necessitated her resignation as National Registrar of Alpha Sigma Alpha. It is with joy, however, that we announce that she is making a splendid recovery and it is the hope of every Alpha Sigma Alpha that her release from sorority duties will materially speed that recovery.

Mary Mae Paul has been a national convention goer and has impressed convention delegates with her keen judgment as well as her attractive and stimulating personality.

As the beloved Adviser of Tau Tau Chapter, she has served them long and faithfully. It was therefore, typical of her that she loaded members of that chapter, including Dean Agnew, into a college bus, kept every member of the crowd happy and piloted the driver safely to the door of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver, Colorado. Here, with her devoted clan around her, she injected A. S . A. enthusiasm and loyalty into the Regional Meeting. Here mounted on a chair, she led the singing with such joy, that all those present came under her magnetic charm.

And so surrounded by the love of every Alpha

Sigma, we feel sure that Mary Mae Paul will soon be her dear, gay self and again resume her place in Alpha Sigma A lpha activities.

Our Sixteenth National Convention f OLLOWING registration in the corridor outside the East Lounge, our Convention Hall, Alpha Sigma Alpha's All-American, 16th annual convention was launched at 12 :30 on Monday, August 4, at a luncheon whose theme was " Welcome to Chicago."

Mrs. Jeanne Willett Ramsey, convention hostess, made us feel truly welcome. She assured us we had chosen a fine month, since August was named for Caesar Augustus. "As he developed his realm more than many, so may we develop our realm, our own sorority, successfully."

As Mrs. Ramsey pointed out, our convention has a beautiful setting, here at the Edgewater Beach hotel. While here, we stand on made land. It must have been thrilling to see the sandsuckers draw out and throw sand, then a bit of soil on top, and thus form a foundation in this vast lake for such a fine building.

Members of the national council, and national chairmen, were introduced: Miss Evelyn Bell, national president; Miss Esther Bucher, national vice-president; Mrs. Thelma Stortz Moyer, national secretary; Mrs. Polly Schlosser, national treasurer ; Mrs. B. F. Leib, national editor; Louise Stewart, historian; Sally Horter, alumn~ editor; Helen B. Bradley, alumn~ organizer, acting registrar ; Marie Berry, fellowship chairman; and Nell Kuchs, constitution chairman.

Serving as a committee in charge of the luncheon were: Jeanne Willett Ramsey, convention hostess; Louise Stewart (also national historian) ; Cappy LandorÂŁ; Ethel Llewellyn, who wrote clever invitations for the a.lumn~ ; Dorothy Masters, chairman of Chicago publicity; Sally Jo Grigsby Cluever, and Betty Grigsby Foyer. Thanks to all of you for a lovely "opening luncheon!

A comprehensive pamphlet on the American flag-how to display and respect it-was provided for each individual.

Songs we sang at luncheon were: "Grace Before Meat," "All Through Your Life," "They're A. S. A.'s," "An All-America," "Forward on Our Way." Mrs. Ramsey referred to the continental wind which Chicago has. It is formed of winds from all parts of our country. "As it comes from everywhere in our land, so do our sorority girls.

And as it has power and influence from this fusion, so Alpha Sigma Alpha possesses strength and power."

We adjourned to the opening business session.

Following luncheon came our first business session, when Wilma 路w i lson Sharp, with her engaging personality, put us all in a quiet mood with Devotions.

Our official Hostess, Jeanne Willetts Ramsey, made us feel most welcome, and Marjorie Baxter of Eta Eta, Pittsburg, Kansas, answered the welcome with her impressions of her first national convention.

Several guests and advisers present were introduced to us by our very capable President.

Two reports were given-Credentials, Helen Bradley; Convention Program, Helen Corey.

It was a thrill to note the enthusiasm with which the active chapter delegates presented their shields when called upon by Thelma Moyer, national secretary. It was interesting to note how many A. S. A. groups were the largest on their campuses.

The Alumn<e delegates told us all about their activities, mostly social, and it's a grand feeling to know there are so many active alumn<e groups throughout the United States. They are all doing something worthwhile in their respective groups and communities.

The reports of the National Council which followed help us to realize the scope and strength of Alpha Sigma Alpha in the United States.

Monday night was Regional Night. Eagerly we crowded into the dining room. What is that long table? Oh, that's Region I! In the middle of the table was a perfect model of the United States Capitol at Washington. From the dome of the Capitol reel and white streamers led to the place cards in front of the plates. On them was an outline of the state with the name of the

chapter written above. It looked so pretty we hated to move on but when we saw the display on the table of Region II, we were delighted.

Region II, known as the "Garden Spot," had a centerpiece of fresh garden vegetables, even corn on the cob ! ! The place cards were small garden tools telling us "This is the way .. . ."

Region III brought forth the typical sight of wheat with the place cards in the shape of the state. Good for Region III !

The southern girls displayed a centerpiece of a southern colonial house set on a green lawn.

For place cards the Region IV girls made southern belles of crepe paper, clothespins and ribbons, with the delegate's names written on little fans held in the belle's hand-all reflecting the friendliness of these southern girls.

Region V decorated their table for eight guests with intricately made characters of the Golden West. Since Region V consists of chapters in a typically western part of the United States and also the Sunny South, the table was divided by mountains with cowboys, cactus, corrals on the east side and bathing girls, umbrellas and palm trees on the west. There are no men on the west side-they are all in camps !

Xi Xi college girls and alumn<e working on the exhibit hope that the center barrier of mountains will not mean a barrier of- friendship with the other chapters.

After Dinner Regional Skits Alpha Sigma A lpha, friends, and guests were entertained Monday evening at a Theatre guild presenting A lpha Sigma Alpha's own talent.

Region I, under the direction of Louise Santosuosso, started the program with a bouncing skit entitled "The Duchess Bounces In." A pantomine "An Alpha Sig Scrapbook" presented a bit from every chapter in Region II with Ramona Barnes in charge.

Region III changed the program somewhat by interpreting slogans with other members of the region guessing them. Ida May Redkey was responsible for this idea.

Region IV, with Virginia Down's help, presented a skit, 'Out of the Past."

The Theatre guild was completed by a melodramatic skit, "The Villain Pursued Her." Eight girls from Region V including Margaret Yoklavich participated.

NoVEMBER, 1941

A great amount of talent was displayed to the enjoyment of all present. We're looking forward to these Alpha Sigs being the movie stars of tomorrow.

Tuesday's business session was an important 路 one in the lives of all Alpha Sigs. Changes were made in the Constitution which will set the 路policies and affect the future sorority existence of all of us. Maybe we felt as we were sitting there "just another business meeting," but as we look back on it we realize that we were making it possible to utilize the strength and efficiency that is ours in the reallocation of duties of our national officers .

These constitutional changes make 路it possible for the establishment of a central office for A lpha Sigma Alpha. A lso they deleted the duties of the National Treasurer, placing the responsibility and funds of the Fellowship Loan Fund and the Magazine Subscription Service in the hands of their respective chairmen. It deleted the office of National Educational Director and added the office of Director of Alumnce Activities.

The amendments provided for additional National Chairmen : Convention, Paraphernalia and Magazine Subscription Service. Each chapter has received a supply of the amended constitutions.

Luncheon in the Old South Alpha Sigs became Evangeline minded Tuesday noon when the girls from Beta Zeta chapter at Lafayette, Louisiana, entertained at luncheon.

Geneva Richard, chairman, says: "Small replicas of Evangeline clone in reel and 'o/hite with a short quotation from that poem, served as place cards. Spanish Moss, always a novelty, we tied with red satin bows to make an interesting centerpiece. On the main table was an effective picture of a China "Evangeline" in her native costume. From the lovely remarks the girls made, I feel that they were happy to meet our Louisiana character. vVe are proud of a section so different from any other in the United States that it clings to the past and old memories.

I am glad Helen Corey gave me the opportunity to present our heroine to girls of Alpha Sig." Special guests included Mrs. Robert Howat,

a sister of M rs. Fred Sharp, and Miss Lee Fairchild Bacon, .the guest speaker of the afternoon.

The Place of College Girls in the Defense Program Alpha Sigma Alpha was most fortunate to have Miss Lee Fairchild Bacon, dean of women, Marshall College at Huntington, West V irginia, address its all-American convention Tuesday afternoon on the topic, "The Place of College Girls in the Defense P rogram."

Miss Bacon is particularly well informed on this subject, because a program has been accepted for Marshall College that will go into effect this fall-a program planned to train college girls for whatever eventuality lies ahead.

M iss Bacon fee ls that because of her recollections of the first World vVar, she realizes many of the problems that the present college girl may face.

Although we are not now at war, we are in a state of war, and those who study history know that there has never before been an extensive defense program built up, as ours is being built up, without its being used. The trend is shown by the fact that the book, The Ttfl hite Cliffs of Dover, by Alice Duer Mill er is perhaps the first book of poetry to ever be a best seller.

The last line is, "But in a world where there is no England, I do not care to live." Also the book, J11路y Sister and I , is bei.n g widely read.

Though war is exhau ting and depressing, there is still a tremendous urge to take some active part in it. Miss Bacon sugge ts that the

first thing to do is to carry on our primary job- effective vehicle for service which fraternity going to college-in a better fashion than ever membership in the field of education affords. before. The first formal dinner of the 1941 National Marshall College will have in its program: 1. Red Cross service.

Miss Bacon graciously offered to give more variation from seating arrangements used at information as to how similar programs might former affairs. Centerpieces of balloons topped with the American Flag formed the centerpieces for each table. The base of the piece was in the form of a shield. Four red candles stood on star holders at the four points of the shield. The year "40" was marked with red letters on each candle. The very attractive covers for the menus were designed by Mrs. Sidney Landau, Pittsburg Alumna:: Chapter, and carried our crest in blue on a white background-the cover edged with a red, white and blue stripe and fastened with a red, wh ite and blue silk cord.

Representatives of Delta Omicron, professional music fraternity, supplied us with delightful entertainment. Miss Naomi Cook, one of their members, favored the luncheon meeting with three songs. She made her debut with the Chicago Opera Company last year. We'll be hearing more of her in the future no matter where we live.

Miss Bessie Covert, President of Delta Omicron and Vice-President of Women's Professional Panhellenic Association, greeted our convention. She welcomed us as the baby member of W. P. P. A. Jeanne Bernhke, member of Phi Beta Speech and Art Fraternity, told us about the orgamzation and growth of her organization.

Table Decorations Clinch Luncheon Theme The clever Atlantic and Pacific Navies at either end of the head table were the center of interest of the table decorations. Large and small blue anchors graced the other tables. The place card favors sported the lifesaver. The attractive shells on the table were kindly loaned 路

Wednesday night was play day dinner. The tables were set for individual sports . The place cards at each table told the story of the sport under discussion at that table, being little caricatures of swimmers, golfers, hockey, archery, rifle, basketball and bridge players. Thus, you could see yourselves as others see you. Marion Powell, Betty Barringer and Pauline Steinberg of Nu Nu chapter arranged this dinner.

The final banquet on Thursday night was the High Light of the convention. Nelle Martindale Kuchs as chairman and Marie Raub Kingdon as toastmistress surpassed themselves in their performance.

Fortieth Anniversary Celebrated by Lighting of Large Birthday Cake The surprise of the evening was a large birthday cake in honor of Alpha Sigma Alpha's Fortieth birthday. Louise Cox Carper, one of the founders of the sorority, cut the cake, and sections of it were passed to the conventioners by the pages. The cake was beautifully decorated with forty red candles.

UNITY "We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union,"-there it is, the need for union, so important, that those who framed our constitution stressed the idea of union at the very outset. And who better than those early colonists could know the moral courage and the physical strength to be found in unity? They had been functioning as separate entities too long. Their individual minor successes gave no promise of ever attaining the ultimate goal,-and then, they united. The vital

14 need for a united front was their basic reason for orgamzmg. True, they had their differences, but at least they were united in their singleness of purpose.

Because of that first union, we are free today. And because we value that freedom, we need no dictator. We live by our common law, and yet when an emergency arises we impose our own restrictions, we seek discipline, and we voluntarily make any sacrifices required. All this we do willingly because of our abiding faith in our union and the things for which it stands.

Today throughout our country there have sprung up a variety of organizations designed to unify the many activities connected with our National Defense Program. These groups are functioning under many different names. They are headed by individuals who may differ in their political beliefs; they are supported by other individuals who may represent different religions ; and they seek the cooperation of still other individuals from every walk of our national life. Working separately these many individuals could accomplish just so much, but together they can accomplish what at first seems impossible for unity is soon recognized as an imperative in an emergency such as we face.

Sometimes it takes an emergency to show us our points of weakness. Sometimes it takes an emergency to reveal our points of strength.

Sometimes it takes an emergency to make us appreciate the worth of values we have accepted so casually.

To a smaller degree we find that that is true in our national political life is true in our N ationa! sorority life. We will always have minor differences because of our individuality, but when our hearts are united in a common endeavor we sink all our differences, and thus vitalized by a united front we can accomplish what at first seemed impossible.

Mrs. Sharp's firial message to the convention banquet was a brilliant climax to the entire convention program. Its inspirational import thrilled every conventioner to the point where all of her enthusiasm will be carried through them to the chapters they represent.

Ritualistic Services at Convention All ritualistic services at convention were m charge of Wilma Wilson Sharp.

The first of these, Pledge Service was held at nine o'clock, Tuesday morning-when Sarah Jane Baumgardner of Detroit, Michigan, received the pledge degree. Louise Stewart, our former national chaplain, read the part of the President, Louise Cox Carper, our founder, read the chaplain's part; Kay Ludlow from Philadelphia, acted as adviser; and Marion Thomas was Sarah Jane's sponsor.

The spiritual uplift that we experienced Wednesday evening at the service of initiation for our new members was something that is not cast off, but clings with us for a long time to come, and we are better, and wiser and bigger as a result of it. 路 All such services are dignified and beautiful, but such 路 a service at convention seems to strike a deeper tone. To be the honored initiates and onlooke~s at an initiation service conducted by our national officers is a never-to-be~forgotten expenence.

We are pleased and proud of our new initiates and bid them a warm and lasting welcome: Nora Sheehy, Beta Theta; Ruth Werner, Alpha Gamma; Ada Joan Schendoah, Beta Gamma; Barbara Buffam, Eta Eta .

On Thursday afternoon we sadly and reverently paid tribute in a memorial service for the members of Alpha Sigma Alpha who had left our midst since our last convention.

Thank You, Helen Corey Interntpted meals, phone calls at all hours, hundreds of questions to answer, walking through miles of corridors to make arrangements for the various convention events-and still Helen kept smiling. She is the happy combination of southern charm, northern efficiency, western vitality, and eastern poise that stands out in any group.

No wiser appointment could have been made for the exacting position of convention manager than that of Helen Corey. She had spent months of careful preparation in making arrangements so that the program would run smoothly. Our hats are off to you, Helen, for having made all of this so pleasant for us. May all other conventions that you manage be as successf ul !

HISTORY OF WILMA WILSON SHARP ALUMNAE AWARD Established at the 1941 Convention Imagine, if you can, three active members and three pledges trying to hold together the material evidences of a sorority !

It was back in 1933-34-if I remember correctly-when. the competition among sororities on the Ohio State University campus was terrific. Students either had plenty of money for sorority membership, or none at all. The strongest point used against our chapter was the fact that we were, at our root, a professional sorority and not a member of ational Panhellenic. There is no need to go into detail about that-the result was that Lambda Lambda of ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA had three seniors, active members, and three pledges.

among us and did our best. I was the only Alpha Sig girl living in a sorority house where ten or twelve could and had lived comfortably.

We even " took in roomers," hoping that would tide us over until better times came along.

I don't suppose there were ever three more serious pledges than Lois Wuichet, Mina Rockwell and Dorothy Lyons. In the face of a crisis there's no need in flying false colors and we needed whole-hearted support by all. So they were told the facts, but chose to stick with us! . It was at this time vVilma Wilson Sharp was our guiding inspiration.

Her encouragement and faith in us was the force that saw us through that last year. When we were almost positive we'd have to disband before the end of the school year-a call came from Mrs. Sharp saying she was sending a check which would prevent such a calamity. Do I need describe our feelings on that night?

You probably know the rest-the chapter at Ohio State University is no more, but we have a strong alumn::e chapter in Columbus. It is that organization which sent the money donated in its time of crisis back to Mrs. Sharp--the money which is the foundation of the WILMA WILSON SHARP ALUMNAE AWARD, establi shed at the 1941 Convention.

The thrill that surpassed all thrills was the attendance at convention of Louise Cox Carper, one of those who at Farmville; Virginia, November 15, 1901, shared the beautiful vision that brought our sorority into being. Lovely does not adequately describe her, gracious does not do her justice; but combine all the attributes that you would most desire in a sorority sisterand you will find them combined in Louise Cox Carper, our sister and one of our fom~ders.

Mrs. Carper is the proud mother of two children. Her son, the Reverand Wood Carper, chaplain at Princeton University, has two sons, Tommy and Nicky. Mrs. Carper makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Taylor, and her two children, Barbara and Daniel, in Charleston, West Virginia .

路convention in Reflection All four feet, eleven inches of me were mightily impressed with the big girls from California and their many capabilities ; also, how susceptible some Bostonians are to a southern accent; and the seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy displayed by our officers and those in charge of the convention activities; Wilma's ability to always say the right thing at the right time; Evelyn's prodigious memory for names; Polly's knack of making elucidating explanations of financial policies and schemes; the wacky telegrams that Esther received were always good for a laugh; Genevieve's carrying on a half dozen jobs at the same time and always doing them well; Thelma's tricky little twist of the tongue when calling the roll; the clever way Helen had of making announcements at the rightest moment so that they acted like shots of adrenaline to our ftaging spirits (remember that luncheon when she told us of a possible invasion by a contingent of Uncle Sam's armed forces?)

To a first-convention-goer, the personal contacts with our sorority members from all parts of the country and meeting with our national officers with the resulting interchange of ideas have made the outstanding impression. It has produced a stock of stimulation to give to our chapters here at home so that our activities may be more effective nationally and locally. Participation in fraternity life is largely training for leadership and leadership means the assuming of responsibilities. However it is just as important that w~ realize that not all of us can be leaders, but that we can wield influence and give strength to our organization by being intelligent, understanding and cooperative followers.

After two months away from convention the highlights which are still most vivid to me number about one hundred-thirty. (No. I don't mean the soldier boys!) The lights in my memory-pictures are one hundred thirty bright and shiny sisters-all Alpha Sigs. Why, what would the convention have been without them !

It's such an exhilerating adventure to meet sorority sisters from other campuses and to find them everything you hoped, and more. It's satisfying yet challenging, for those girls were a

beautiful manifestation of Alpha Sigma Alpha's creed and aims and standards. The girls I met at convention are the girls I want for my lifelong friends, girls whose ideals are those for which I strive, girls whose friendship I would strive to win and deserve.

The opportunity to meet and know our national officers, past and present, and our lovely founder, Louise Cox Carper, was perhaps the grandest event of convention. Don't all . you people who attended convention feel as though your heart will swell and burst when you think of the people who serve our sorority, heart and hand? I recommend that all the people who haven't met them picture them thus: Think of the very best kind of Alpha Sig there could be on earth-with the maximum of charm, sweetness and poise, tact, good humor, and willingness to serve. Can you see her? Well, multiply her by ten and you have them-our officers and founder-the highest highlights of ASA's convention.

I'll ever remember the 1941 Alpha Sigma Alpha Convention and hope that it is only the first of many more to come for me. I hope to see all my old friends-of -two-months and many more new ones in 1944. All my love and gratitude to those who planned and carried out the convention and who made it possible for me to go.

As we Nu Nus packed our bags on Friday, August 8, and took one last look at the beautiful hotel that had been "ours" for one glorious week, each memorable event returned to create a distinct never-to-be-forgotten picture in ou路r minds. Our thoughts returned to Registration Day-will we ever forget the excitement in the lobby as we were greeted by our I ational Officers and other Alpha Sigs. Although we were from distant places, a common bond, the sisterhood of A. S. A. brought us together, and that bond grew stronger as the days flew by. The friendly spirit that reigned through convention week made each of us feel that she was part of an organization that was much larger than she had ever dreamed, and yet she was a vital part of it.

The programs arranged by representatives of the various chapters were splendid and bring back bright memories. We u Nus will never forget the fun we had on our trip from Phila-

r8 delphia, planning the program and table decorations for our Play Day dinner. You probably remember the place cards depicting some of the most popular sports. And, by the way, .did you have time to keep the dates for games w1th your competitors? .

We probably won't ever stop talkmg about convention and the comradeship that was deepened by contact with our National Officers, ~hap颅 ter delegates, alumn~, and visitors. We enJ?yed the talent displayed by our sisters at the Regional Skits the mid-night frolics with their laughter and ~ongs, the trips to Chicago's shopping districts and the before-breakfast dips in the very cold ~aters of Lake Michigan .

Vve shall never forget the beautiful model services characterized by solemnity and dignity; they renewed our determinations to stri:e for the best in Alpha Sigma Alpha, and to hve up to all her ideals. The Round Table discussions were conducted so that all could take an active part, and those of us who attended benefited by the contributions made by other chapter delegates.

We returned from convention filled with new ideas and inspired with a great desire to make our chapter an asset to this great organization.

We were proud to be Alpha Sigs, and now we are filled with an even greater pride and a new loyalty to our sorority. We feel that the bond between our chapters has been tightened, drawing each of us closer together; that which seemed so vast and distant, now seems so very close.

Each of us returned with a strengthened determination to "aspire, seek, 路attain," and for all of this we give thanks.

"Accent" on Convention The honor of being a delegate to the N ationa! Convention, so ideally located at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago, is one that I shall treasure always. It was a thrilling experience to find such a grand group of girls from all over the United States. To meet and to know the officers of the National Council, and to realize their untiring effort and loyalty to Alpha Sigma Alpha was truly inspirational. Hats off to every single one of them from the " accent-minded" Alpha Sig who tried to mix a "language cocktail"-Ingreclients: a Boston accent and a Southern drawl- Result: not much success-but-loads of fun!

The most thrilling experience that I had at the National Convention this summer, was the privilege of being seated, at the last formal dinner next to Louise Cox Carper, one of our Natio~al Founders. Her charm and graciousness thrilled me and I felt it a singular honor to hear her say that the convention was to her "a dream come true." I, too, have never dreamed that anything as wonderful as that convention could ever come to me.

MARY FRANCES TODD, Phi Phi. ASA convention this summer is subject matter enough to fill a book and it is difficult to wri~e just a little bit about it. I wish every Alpha S1g could experience the thrill of meeting so many Alpha Sigs at once, as we did in Chicago.

Eta Eta chapter had charge of the closing breakfast on Friday morning. We were all a little bit sleepy and tired from our eventful week, but we still sang and laughed- and were even a bit sad at the thoughts of convention being so nearly over. Little ASA dolls (bearing a close resemblance to pipe cleaners) were the place cards and American flags lined -the tables.

Sidney Gremillion, Psi Psi; Carol Frazee, Pi Pi; Lois Downey, Xi Xi and Kathryn Faust Davey, Pittsburgh alumna gave some of their impressions of convention which left us laughing, reminiscing and with a feeling that Alpha Sig sisterhood we were enjoying could never end.

Dear Alpha Sig Sister : We are just bursting with enthusiasm; for seven of us from Psi Psi have just returned from the National Sorority Convention at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago. One hundred and thirty girls, all Alpha Sigs, spent five grand clays working and playing together.

The luncheons, banquets and dance were grand, .b ut what we want most to share with those of the alumn~ who were not fortunate enough to go, is our experience with our National Council.

for all of us. We are very happy to know that for the next three years she is to be closer than ever to the alum nee- she has been elected DIRECTOR OF ALUMNAE ACTIVITIES. Esther Bucher is the sort of Alpha Sig we all aspire to be-efficient and very charming.

We were fascinated by Thelma Moyer. In spite of the fact that she has a doctor husband, a hundred-year-old home (complete with antiques ) and a four-month-old son, she has fulfilled her many duties as secretary. It was with regret that we accepted her resignation.

All of you chapter treasurers and magazine chairmen who have had business with Polly Schlosser have been inspired by her sympathy and understanding of your problems-but you don't know how wonderful she is until you've actually met her.

Ill health prevented Mary Mae Paul from being with us in Chicago. Helen Bradley, Alumnee Organizer, was acting Regi strar. She is a brunette with personali ty plus, and if all our alumnce knew Helen we would have chapters everywhere !

Genevieve Leib is as grand as that grand magazine she edits-THE PHOENIX. She was truly "Sweet Genevieve" to all.

We pledge our loyalty and devotion to our new 1 ational President, W ilma Wi lson Sharp.

To know her is to love her. Her inspirational messages were among the high spots of the convention. She carries some sort of inward lamp of happiness which shines on each in a very special way.

We were very proud of the financial report, and to know that the sorority earned almost two hundred dollars in commissions from magazines.

The Magazine Subscription Service is our newest project, and it should have our full support for, as Lucile Rogers of Theta stated, "There's gold for sororities in the magazine business."

When we were studying for our pledge test at Normal we learned that Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded in 1901 at } armerville, V irginia, by five girls. It was just another history fact to be remembered. To the girls privileged enough to be at the convention it has become a glowing reality, for one of those girls, Mrs. Louise Cox Carper, was the honored guest. Her hair is white, she isn't very strong, but her vivacity, her love of Alpha Sig and its ideals were an inspiration to all.

There are so many other interesting things I could tell you-about the midnight frolics, the visit to Breakfast Club Broadcast, the grand girls from the other college and alumnce chapters, the

19 impressive installation, initiation, pledging and memorial services. The ovember PHOENIX will be a convention issue. As chairman of Region II I planned for weeks for the Regional Dinner; I had fun placing on the tables the centerpieces of fresh garden vegetables and the garden tool place cards; and I wa overjoyed that you liked my "garden spot."

But my greatest thrill was being a part of that beautiful initiation service.

Sponsoring Ruth Werner as she took the Sanctuary Degree was probably my most inspiring expe rience, for in the splendor of that service I found the real meaning of joy, pride, love and loyalty in Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Convention has meant a great deal to me.

To found closer friendship among many A lpha Sigma sisters and to feel better acquainted with

those whom they represented, to help in planning the future of the sorority, to acquire an enthusiasm that one can't help but radiate-these are lovely memories, but most of all I gained through broader knowledge and deeper understanding a greater desire to have Alpha Sigma Alpha attain new heights in the fraternity world. This has been implanted in my heart and will remain there forever.

We did. And, I assure you, there is nothing more inspirational and memorable. To see a group of girls in a round-table discussion of the problems and developments of each chapter, expressing new ideas and improving old ones is an invaluable experience.

You can be sure that it was flattering for us southern girls to attract attention by our "drawls," even when the elevator boy refused to stop until we repeated "Number four, please" five times! Quite confidentially though, we agreed that "yankees" are wonderful. Never have we been accepted so cordially as when Mrs. Ramsey welcomed us to Chicago. And we couldn't mention the word "Convention" without giving Miss Corey due credit- she still stand~ unsurpassed in efficiency and personality.

"It would be greatly inaccurate to say that the Convention was wonderful," said our delegate, Evelyn Roos, when she returned. "So pardon me while I 'adjectivate'-marvelous, super, unbelievable, beautiful, luscious, overwhelming, and exhilarating? That was it!"

And Helen Corey, our adviser and chairman of the whole affair, agreed-though modestly, of course.

"That convention taught more through business and social contacts with the Alpha Sigs than can possibly be written in our printed principles.

Undoubtedly, the principles are the nucleus of our get-togethers, but no one can realize how they are expanded until one actually meets, plays,

and talks with a great group of sorority sisters from all over the country," our president stated.

"It takes a convention like that one-in such a breath-taking hotel-to really teach what it's all about. Did I say wonderful?"

From the sparkle in her eyes as she gave accurate accounts our girls could see that Evie was definitely excited and that she intends to carry out plans for the best chapter ever, as instigated by a certain August pep rally. "And I brought back some of the cutest ideas for fun," she added.

To supplement Evie's words, Helen said she was sorry all of us could not meet all of the girls and experience all the good times as she had done.

Our newly acquired scrapbook of events there tells the story of it perfectly- from the first entrance into the hotel to the last look at itwith an occasional draftee and MEAL mixed in.

Remember the girls? Remember the Yacht Club, etc.? Marshall Field's? Horace Heidtand family? Remember the pajama-clad N ationa! Officers? And Don MeN eall? Remember?

- All of us can't, but all of us have heard and can set our hearts on another such conventionTill thenAspire Seek Attain.

"Thrills and more thrills" describes the Alpha Sigma Alpha All-American Convention. Everyone heard before convention about the "Thursday Morning Surprise." The announcement as to its nature was eagerly awaited, but even then it came as a shock- to see and hear "The Breakfast Club of the Air" broadcast was a pleasure many of us never expected to experience.

Breakfast was served at 6 :30 to the brave ones that ventured from their beds, and then everyone met at the front of the hotel where we crowded into two buses for the ride to the Merchandise Mart where the program was broadcast.

In spite of the heavy eyelids, everyone sang with pep and enthusiasm.

After reaching the broadcasting station, we were hurried into elevators and whisked upstairs.

The fun soon began. Our own Sidney Gremillion, with her southern accent, talked over the air, and it was announced that the Alphas were guests.

After the broadcast, we were shown through the building, and then boarded the buses for the

trip to the hotel. Everyone was tired but happy, and felt that another wonderful event was at an end.

Convention week was such a grand one ! I think the most thrilling of all the exciting things that happened to me was making a record interviewing our charming founder, Mrs. Louise Cox Carper. I know that all of you who met Mrs. Carper in Chicago can realize what a pleasure and honor that was-especially to a newly initiated Alpha Sig. Mrs. Carper, Louise Stewart, our Historian, and I arrived at the studio at about 8 :00 Friday evening. With many misgivings we rehearsed the script; but M iss Stewart's confidence gave us the assurance we needed.

This recording is to be the first in our Alpha Sigma Alpha record file. Miss Stewart i.s . to be complimented on a fine plan for an addition to our historical record of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Incidentally we did get back to the Edgewater Beach Hotel to see a part of Orrin Tucker's floor show. Wasn't that evening a grand climax to such an eventful week?

"Paging Miss Keller, Paging Miss Keller!!"

- Those were the words I first heard as I stepped from my train in "down town Chicago." When I made it known that I was Miss Keller, the gentleman, a representative of the railroad, stepped up and said he was there to help a~l Alpha Sigs. Such service I have never expenenced. I really needed him because in the baggage room was a huge box that I just had to have in the taxi with me. I refused to move an inch without it. Soon, my luggage and I , were in a taxi and gaily riding toward the Edgewater Beach Hotel.

I niust tell you about the important contents of that box ! ! ! Alpha chapter had charge of the table decorations for Region I at the Regional dinner. We thought the Capitol at Washington would be a very good sample of the culture and charm of the East. Thus, in my little ( ?) box was a miniature of the Capitol. I wish all the Alphas, all those in Region I, in fact all jolly Alpha Sigs, could have. se~n our. table that night. The Capitol stood maJestical~y 111 the center of the table with red and white streamers leading to the place cards which wer~ the states in which chapters were located, showmg we are really, after all, just one big, happy group working and playing everywhere in small groups but all for a central purpose.

The service we enjoyed, the friends we made, . the fun we had, and the advice and help we received made the 1941 convention really perfect!

POLLY KELLER. Memories of four happy days spent with energetic A lph a Sigs from all over the United States will linger in my mind for many years to come. How could I forget contacts made with girls who were aspiring for the same purpose.

I couldn't forget the spirit of friendliness , loyalty, and cooperation that reigned just those few days we knew each other. Yes, I'm truly thankful for the privilege of being able to attend our Alpha Sigma Alpha sixteenth National Convention. ' I couldn't tell anyone what I thought most outstanding about convention. The entire program was beyond my power of criticism. The way in which our business meetings were conducted was so impressive. I'm sure our national officers spent many hours preparing their material so that the program would run smoothly.

Miss Corey's remarkable ability as convention chairman was one of the most wonderful things I have ever known. Never in my life have I seen anyone manage a thing as big as our convention quite so capably and do it with as much chann and poise as she did.

Everything about convention was a joy. . It was oodles of fun being chairman of the Midnight Spree. The other hotel guests were gracious about not complaining to the manager of the noise we made. Mrs. Leib's rendition of "Sweet Genevieve" was an accomplishment we hadn't realized she possessed.

I do so hope the "Yankee" gals still have the southern accent they tried so hard to acquire from the girls of the deep South. My northern brogue vanished the moment I boarded the " Dixie Mail" for Nashville and my own southland. It was a glorious experience to visit with so many charming girls from every point in the U . S. Whether our Alpha Sigs be from the North, East, West, or South, you will find them possessing the same character, culture, and charm, which is the golden heritage our Founders gave us.

At the opening session, the presentation of the shields by the college chapter delegates was most impressive. Many of the girls proudly told us their chapter was the largest on campus . One typical Alpha Sig delighted us by stating, "We are not the biggest on the campus-but we are the best!"

As an Alumna member of Alpha Sigma Al pha, the renewal of friendships and sorority ideals impressed me most at our Chicago Convention.

Convention proved once more what a grand group of lively girls comprise our organization.

Girls of "character, caliber, culture, and charm" graced the Edgewater Beach Hotel and pledged themselves anew to Alpha Sig's ideals. Sisters from all our chapters gathered together to make convention an inspiring get-together.

ALICE GREGER, Buffalo, New York My first Alpha Sig Convention! It was even more than my highest anticipations. Renewing sorority contacts with our own Pi Pi girls and meeting all our sisters from every corner of the country was indeed inspiring. We alumn<e girls were especially glad to attend a sorority convention because it brought back happy memories of our college clays in Alpha Sig and renewed our interest. The initiation ceremony was especially impressive. The formal dinner was a most beautiful and fitting climax to an eventful week.

When first asked to tell what I enjoyed most at the Convention I said, "Why I don't know what to write. I 路enjoyed everything at the Convention." But after pondering for a moment I know that what thrilled me most was meeting and associating with the members of the ational Council and my sorority sisters from all parts of the country. It made me realize what a great sorority we really have and what a privilege it is to belong to Alpha Sigma Alpha. Having heard and read so much about the members of the N a tiona! Council, it was a great pleasure to me to have the opportunity to become acquainted with them and be inspired by their loyalty and devotion to Alpha Sigma Alpha. I know it was an experience that I shall never forget.

KAy Lunww, Philadelphia, Pa. The Alpha Sigma Alpha Convention of 1941 was an event which I looked forward to with much enthusiasm. Enthusiastic as I was my anticipation did not begin to measure up to what the convention had in store for me.

I have always felt it a real privilege to be a member of our Delta Phi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, and the biggest thrill of the convention was to discover that we are members of such an outstanding, loyal, and efficient group .

It is easy to understand why Alpha Sigma Alpha is so well organized, and as strong a sorority group as it is, after meeting our_ national officers and knowing all that they stand for. The convention meetings offered excellent material to convey to our chapter. Extremely inspiring were the activities of other chapters, ideas for promoting new affairs in our chapter, and the highly organized system which is backing everyone and should make each member eager to offer support. I could enumerate many more. The presence of charming Mrs. Carper, the founder of Alpha Sigma Alpha was an honor for everyone.

Having previously had such delightful times at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago, I realized what an ideal setting it was for a convention; and with the assistance of our convention chairman the hotel management indeed proved excellent hosts.

The rejoicing and reminiscing of those who had been fortunate enough to attend past conventions was most elating, and I hope to be m on that part of it next time.

This was my first National Convention and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the girls in my Indianapolis Alumn<e Chapter

NovEMBER, 1941 for the honor and privilege of representing them in Chicago.

There were many outstanding features of the convention, two of which I should like to mention. The very great privilege of meeting Mrs. Louise Cox Carper, one of the Founders of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Her unfailing devotion, charm and loyalty to her sorority, evidenced by her coming to convention, lent a quiet dignity impressive to all of the girls. May we all hold that same love in our hearts many years, as shown

by Mrs. Carper.

Because of our interest in our country during these times, the speaker who gave a most interesting, encouraging and instructive address, was Miss Lee Fairchild Bacon, Dean of Women, Marshall College, Huntingtop, West V irginia.

The girls in her college are having the rare opportunity of actually working for defense projects. Many other schools are adopting the same courses in Red Cross work and even Mechanics for the girls. Miss Bacon told of the hard tasks ahead and untiring effort that will have to be made to help America.

Meeting our National Officers and really seeing the tremendous amount of work they dohow efficiently they care for each individual task, surely has given us an added incentive to work harder in our own small groups.

This all sounds very serious-but girls! Remember the Soldiers and Horace Heidt! !

DoROTHY KARRMANN, Indianapolis, Ind. The thing that impressed me most at our Alpha Sigma A lpha Convention was the proof which each girl gave that she didn't just belongBut that she was an Active member, the kind that's liked so well. She was not just contented with the badge on her lapel, She attended all the meetings and mingled with the flock, and wasn't the kind of an Alpha Sig who would stand back and knock.

She took an active part and helped the Convention's success along, and was not satisfied to be the kind who would just belong.

She didn't stay back near the exit and rant and rave and kick, and leave the work to just a few, Then talk about the clique.

There was quite a grand program scheduled and worked outWe're sure you've heard about.

And it was appreciated greatly, because, each girl did her part and helped out.

Came out to each meeting, helped out with her song, head and heart,

And proved she wasn't just a member, but was a loyal Alpha Sigma Alpha and took an active part.

ALUMNAE ROUND TABLE IN BRIEF A lthough we alums enjoyed every minute we were at Convention, we looked forward to our Round Table Discussions as the most hepful part of the program. We came to the discussion with our problems, seeking solution; and with our successes to aid other chapters with their difficulties. Our meetings were very informal with everyone contributing her bit to the discussion.

It is impossible to bring to you all the ideas, helps, and inspirations which we received at these meetings, but I will endeavor to give you a brief outline of the material covered.

Most of our time was spent on the discussion of various phases of Alumn<e Chapter work, which included membership, programs, financial problems, and the value of the news letter in increasing interest and membership. We also considered the relationship of the Alumn::e Chapter to the local College Chapter and its responsibility to the National Organization.

We received many helpful suggestions for our programs, social activities, and for raising money; but concluded that each Chapter has its own problems, and what may be successful in one Chapter may not be in another, so each Chapter has to select the procedure which will work most satisfactorily in its group.

We are agreed that in order to increase the attendance at our meetings we must make our programs interesting and worth while to all our mem hers.

The Alumn::e Loyalty Committee has done much to bring together Alpha Sigs living in the same vicinitv and to increase the number of, and membership- in our Chapters. Because of the promises made by us when we were initiated into Alpha Sigma Alpha, we owe much to the National Organization and should do all we can to support it.

Retain your interest in Alpha Sigma A lpha by subscribing to the PHOENix ; joining and working in an A lumn<e Chapter and by helping Coll ege Chapters to secure girls who will uphold the standards of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

At our final meeting we drew up the following recommendations and presented them to the Convention Body: 1. That the Vice-Pre ident and the Director

THE of Alumnce Activities investigate the possibility of establishing a philanthropic fund.

2. That the National Council investigate the Alumnce Chapters now isolated from College Chapters, whose life membership are nearly paid, in order that they may continue to have a delegate to conventions.

3. That one national officer or committee chairman visit all Alumnce groups once between conventions.

4. That we have some kind of recognition

for paid life membership dues.

5. That the Director of Alumnce Activities send each Alumnce Chapter a set of sorority study materials.

I only wish that more Alumnce could have attended Convention so they could share with us the inspiration and enthusiasm gained from the meetings and associations with our sisters from all sections of the country.

Efficiency Alpha Sigma Alpha has for many years followed the plan whereby each college chapter officer has worked directly under a corresponding National Councilor. The chapter letters and reports are rated for promptness, accuracy, and completeness by each Councilor. At the close of the sorority year each National Councilor sends in a rating of her officers to the N a tiona! Secretary. A composite efficiency rating is then prepared showing the average made by each chapter.

The national efficiency rating of each chapter is

taken into consider<).tion in awarding the National Council trophy at convention.

Although the following efficiency chart for 1940-41 in no way indicates the strength of each college chapter, it does show the cooperation given ational by eight college chapter officers.

It has been interesting to note over a period of years that the chapters who consistently cooperated with National likewise have carried on a very successful local program and thereby maintained an enviable position among campus organizations.

ET A ETA chapter, located at the State Teachers College, Dickinson, orth Dakota, wants to tell you how happy and thrilled they are to be Alpha Sigma Alphas and the first chapter in their state. Mary German reporting, says : Would you like to know how this all came about? A year ago in October that very grand person, Mrs. Sharp, came to our campus through the invitation of our Dean of Women, Leila G. Woods, to tell interested girls about educational soronties. Interest grew and grew and grew, and finally on December 2, sixteen girls met at South Hall, organizing a local sorority with the aim of petitioning for membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha. Our fir st officers of "A. S. A." were Mary Meulemans, president; Betty Bruvo ld, vice-president; Gwendolyn Bell, secretary; and Marian Carlson, treasurer. Miss vVoods was unanimously chosen our adviser.

Then followed weeks of planning and working as we aspired to become Alpha Sigs. Through hops, sponsoring a show, a candy sale, and a silver tea, our fund grew. Work on our scrapbook absorbed our attention and spa re time.

Then, we sought membership, and after a little whil e of anxious waiting and great suspen e, ot1r petition was accepted by the National Council.

By thi s time, we had gained five new girl s, and an outstanding alumna member, Mrs. Hattie Gaines Parker. We all studied our pledge manuals more ambitiously and more eagerly than any texts, with Miss Woods serving as our very wise and helpful instructor.

At last came the wonderful week-end of May

16-18, when we attained our goal, the sisterhood of Alpha Sigma Alpha . With us were Mrs. Sharp; Mrs. Leib, and Mrs. Schlosser as installing officers; Chi Chi's adviser, Mrs. Whitcraft; a Chi Chi alumna, Mrs. Kingdon; and three actives, Mary Ethel Earl, Tau Tau, and Ruth Voetsch and Gertrude Crane, Beta Beta.

What an inspiration it was to us to meet and know all these grand Alpha Sigs!

In rapid succession, we were pledged, examined and initiated. Although the whirlwind of important events left us almost breathless, we were deeply impressed by the beauty and solemnity of the pledging and initiation ceremonies.

by Mrs. Sharp as the twenty-fifth chapter of ASA, was the loveliest affair imaginable. Mary Meulemans presided as toastmistress for the program which included presentation of the guests by Mrs. Leib; toasts, Aspire by Mary Jane Alguire, Seek by Mary Ethel Earl, and Attain by Mrs. Schlosser; songs by the Alpha Sig Four, Mary Meulema.ns, A rdyce Zempel, Betty Page, and Lucille Pintler. Thrilling were our gifts : recogniti on pins and programs from the national officers, a president's gavel from Miss Evelyn G. Bell, flow ers from the three campus fraternities, and telegrams and notes of congratulation from college and alumnre chapters and other fri ends.

For the perfect conclusion to this all-important week-end, we attended St. John's Lutheran Church Sunday morning, and in the afternoon, honored our guests 路at a four o'clock tea given at South Hall to wh ich the faculty, faculty wives, and presidents of the fraternities were invited . O ur patronesses, Mrs. E thel Bowen and Mrs. Hazel Scott, poured.

At the present time she is an instructor of music in the Lakewood, Ohio Public Schools.

She is very talented along this line, playing both the pipe organ and violin.

Ruth continues to be a valued member of the Cleveland Alumn<e Chapter, retaining her early enthusiasm and loyalty for the Alpha Sigma A lpha girls .

There is no one in Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority to whom we all owe a greater debt of gratitu.de than to Ruth Duffy of the Alpha Alpha Chapter.

It was her faith, which is always necessary to victory, that inspired her to devote months of her time to correspondence which led to the first convention . The four chapters existing at the time: A lpha, Alpha Alpha, A lpha Beta and Alpha Gamma met in Oxford, O hio, in November, 19 14. Ruth was elected ational Treasurer, which office she held for eight year . No one could have given of herself more unselfishly than did she in this exacting work.

For the next four year s she gave the same devotion to the office of National Chaplain.

of the entire Freshman class in Miami Un iversity were enrolled in the School of Education for the year 1940-41 , and Julia ranked first of the ten highest at the close of the first semester, having a 4.0 average or A on all of her work.

Julia is an attractive young lady and was one of the top eleven in a class of two hundred and fifty at Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati last year. She was a leader in all high school literary and mu ical organizations, the "Y," and school government.

Julia has continued to show her leadership qualities in college and on May Day was elected to membership to Cwen, sophomore-service honorary, she was a member of theY. W . C. A. and on different committees, and was selected as counsellor for 1941-42 in East Hall dormitory.

She will have the responsibility as big sister to incoming freshman girls.

It was a real event for us to present the award to brown-eyed and brown-haired Julia Bundy for she came to Miami on the recommendation of her English teacher, Wilma Hutchison, who was an Alpha Sigma Alpha member of Alpha Alpha chapter during her coll ege years.

VIe know anyone \!Vilma recommends is excellent and present Julia to you with much pleasure and the wish that you might know her .personally. It will be a delight to see how she develops in college and makes her elf a sincere leader and student.

ROSEMARY COW AN-HOMECOMING QUEEN AT PITTSBURG, KANSAS

Teachers, paraded her charm and beauty before an admiring student body at the annual election for Homecoming Queen. Result? She won.

The college pessimist who said beauty, charm, and intelligence didn't come in one package suffered a major defeat, for Miss Cowan carried the show with all three qualities.

Rosemary is from Pittsburg. She began winning laurels early. In high school she was the peppy cheerleader radiating her charm to the stadium spectators. \!\Then a senior in high school she was crowned "Miss P ittsburg" and served as hostess queen to the royalty candidates at the annual Coal Festival. She captured newspaper ads with her selling personality when she worked as business manager of the high school paper.

To top off her activities she stayed in the upper per cent of her class in scholastic achievement.

She's beginning her career early in college.

Well known on the campus and a favorite among her sorority sisters, she was easily nominated and selected for the first high honor of the year.

Coll ege for Rosemary, however, retains that grain of seriousness for she's a pre-med student.

How such a beautiful specimen can so delight in the scientific studies of chemistry and zoology are wonders to all. Rosy, however, holds out for her cause; she's planning to be a nurse.

One other point must be added to leave you gasping. Rosemary is a musician. As a violinist of exception she was one 路of the concert masters of the high school orchestra.

Shall we summarize? Beauty super, charm superio r, intelligence plus-it would take a search to find an equal.

Being "banded" as Dickinson State Teachers College Homecoming Princess on October 24 was the culmination of the college career of Beta Eta's Evelyn Morland. ' Evy's prominence on our campus is evidenced by the many activities in which she has participated. At present, she is Beta Eta's registrar, and is serving as president of the Women's League for the second consecutive year.

During her sophomore year, she was secretary of the League, the organization to which all women students belong. A veteran of two years of intercollegiate debating, she belongs to Forum, forensic club, and last year was treasurer of International Relations Club, a discussion group.

In addition to all this, Ev/s been active in Cue Club, dramatic organization, vVomen's Athletic

Association, and Student Lutheran Association.

She rides her hobby horse in the Sketch Club.

Last year, two other special honors were bestowed upon Evy when she was chosen as one of the nine representatives from D.S.T.C. to be included in "Who's \Vho Among Students in American Universities and Colleges," and voted the most popular girl in school by the Men's Union.

Her curly hair is red-gold, her eyes are blue, and she has a friendly smile and "Hello" for everyone. Her friendliness, willingness to work, and cooperative spirit have won her many friends among both students and faculty.

DEFENSE WORK AT HIGH PITCH IN BOSTON

A Banner Day September 23, 1941, was a "banner day" for "Massachusettites" everywhere because that was the day that the battleship, U. S. S. M assachttsetts, was launched at Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Massachusetts. We are fortunate that our namesake had its birth and christening in her native state.

One hundred fifty-two years have passed since the launching of the first U. S. S. Massachusetts which was built at Germantown (Quincy), Massachusetts. In 1919, the Fore River Shipyard was building a battleship, which was to be named for Massachusetts, but the Naval Disarmament Treaty was signed and this ship found herself going to the crap pile. In her place has come this majestic vessel which is 750 feet in length. When she is completed, she

will be a floating city of the same class as the U.S. S . North Cm,olina and the U.S. S. Washington. E~perts say she will be the most powerful, heavily armored vessel afloat when she is commissioned.

When the NJ assachusetts was launched she displaced 28,000 tons of water causing a 'tidal wave ten feet in height along the shores of Quin~y, Braintree, and Weymouth. Many people d1d not heed the warnings that were issued by the authorities and found themselves getting unexpected baths and in a few cases were rescued by the quick action of other spectators. N aturally when 28,000 tons of water are pushed aside suddenly, the level of the water along the shores rises very quickly.

Few of the people watching the ship move down the ways realized that the removal of the supports commenced the evening before at 10:20 p. m. and had continued until 12 :45 p. m. the following day. The last supports were removed at exactly 12 :45 p. m. when Mrs. Adams, the wife o.f Charles Francis Adams, a former mayor of Qumcy and former Secretary of Navy broke the bottle of champagne on the bow. 路 ' The momentum of the vessel had to be ficrured .

Th: tonnage wa~ then divided into different groups to act as a series of brakes on the vessel when it reached the water. The critical point was when the stern of the ship struck the water, because at that moment the entire weight of the vessel was borne by the bow. If the strain was too great at this time, the work of months would have been a failure as a rivet or welded section might break.

When the U. S . S. NJ assachusetts is completed, it will equal the strength of the U . S. S. North Cm'olina. At present it is seven months ahead of schedule which shows the speed the shipyards are maintaining today. 路The Navy lists her completed tonnage at 35,000 tons, but due to changes in design and increase in the th ickness of her armor plate, she will displace 41 ,000 tons.

Fellowship Loan Fund Eleanor Smith Thomas, Chairman ROBABLY every A lpha Sig knows that there is a Loan Fund, from which any sum, up to two hundred dollars, may be borrowed to help a worthy Alpha Sigma Alpha complete her education.

Did you know that this fund is only fifteen years old? That in that time it has grown from a mere little $64 to well over $5000? Of course it is a revolving fund and during its fifteen year span almost $15,000 has been loaned to one hundred three girls. Fifty-nine of these one hundred three loans have been paid in full. Fortyfour loans, totaling $4,548 are now outstanding.

Until last year, the Fellowship Loan Fund was supported by annual contributions of $10 from each active and alumnce chapter. I ow every Alpha Sigma Alpha may contribute by

.l"\. ternity Month says, " If you are a member of a sorority with no magazine agency you are still free to give your magazine subscriptions to the college boy who knocks at the door. But if you belong to a Greek organization which is trying to add dollars to its treasury through the sale of subscriptions "your conscience should give a mighty twinge if you thus transmit that trial subscription to Tim,e or that yearly gift of Readers Dige,st to Aunt Julia. You are, or should be, a partner in a thriving business whose beneficiary is your own sorority and whose profits are magazine subscriptions."

Just how thriving these Panhellenic magazine businesses are can be ascertained when we discover that fifteen sorority agencies, during the year 1940, cleared about 22,000 magazine ubscriptions elling for $60,000, and earning about $15,000 in comn"lissions . The individual so rority earnings varied from $27 to a high of $12,500.

In our first year we cleared almost $200 in magazine commtsstons. Compared with some of the larger ororities and fraternities thi s may eem a very small amount, but to us it is a very encouraging beginning. However, let us take

it as a beginning only, and endeavor to build on it and strengthen it year by year. Under Polly Schlosser's set-up last year we had a fine organization. This year we want to carry it on, to organize it into a full time business that will strengthen our Fellowship Fund in a very material way.

As an incentive to the chapters-college and alumnce-to organize their magazine sales for the maximum efficiency this year, we have decided to offer certain material prizes . We realize that most of you who will work in the magazine sales will do it because you have a genuine love of A . S . A . and not because you are looking for any personal reward . But it i a very happy feeling to know that you have helped not only your sorority, but also your local chapter. For that reason we are offering the following prizes for your efforts in selling magazmes: $7.50 each to college and alumnce chapters with largest sales. $5 .00 each to the college and alumnae chapters with greatest advance over last year.

Association of Education- Sororities Conference

ITH "The Purpose and Place of the AES during This Critical Period in America" as the theme, the fourteenth biennial conference of the Association of Education Sororities was held at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver, Colorado, on July 14, 15, and 16.

The seven member sororities of the Association were officially represented by the following, who form the Council: Miss Mabel Lee Walton of Clermont, Fla., Sigma Sigma Sigma; Mrs. Fred Sharp, Independence, Mo., Alpha Sigma Alpha; Mrs. C. P. Neidig, Cincinnati, Ohio, Pi Kappa Sigma; Mrs. Robert Hill, Rapid City, S. D., Delta Sigma Epsilon; Miss Carrie Walter, Philadelphia, Pa., Theta Sigma Upsilon; Miss . Edith Mansell, Highland Park, Mich., Alpha Sigma Tau, and Miss Mae Warfield, Allentown, Pa., Pi Delta Theta.

The first day's sessions opened with a business meeting in the morning and continued with round table discussions in the afternoon. Mrs. Ludwig Schmidt, S . S . S., led the round table on "Panhellenic Problems" and Mrs . Reinard Schlosser, A. S. A. , directed the di scussion of "Campus Problems."

On Monday evening, a reception was held with 150 alumnce attending. The affair was arranged by a local committee, including Mrs. Schlosser, Mrs. Troy Cartwright, Mrs. George A. Clerisse and Mrs. Rachel Taylor. A musical program was presented by active and alumnce members of the various so rorities.

After the reception there was a round table by the Council on the conference theme, "The Purpose and Place of A. E. S. during This Critical Period in America."

After the business session Tuesday morning, Mrs. Sharp, chairman of the Council, conducted a memorial ceremony in honor of Dr. W . A .

Brandenburg, late president of State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas. Mrs. Robert Hill presided at a round table, using as her subject

"Extension Policies and Opening New Fields."

Later the Denver Alumnce chapter of P. K. S. entertained officers of the Association at a tea at the home of Mrs. Hubert Smith, to which all alumnce were invited.

At Wednesday's meeting, final session of the conference, two appropriations were made, the investment of $100 in Government Defense Bonds and the Greeley scholarship award of $50 to a freshman girl on the Greeley, Colorado, campus.

Two resolutions were adopted : Resolved, in the death of Dr. vV. A. Brandenburg, president of the Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg, the loss of a good friend of the A. E. S . has been sustained, and that an expression of this feeling of loss be given to Mrs. Brandenburg.

Resolved, that the A. E. S. re-affirm its belief and support in the democratic principles of American Education and that it keep a clear conception of the basic function and of the effective vehicle for service which fraternity membersh ip in the field of education affords, and be it further resolved that the A. E. S. summon college and alumnce members for efficient cooperation with th~ir college and commimity organizations for service in the National Defense P rogram.

A lso at this session, Miss Walton gave her report on recommendation from the Committee on the Council of A ffiliated Panhellenics.

Organization of the Akron, Ohio Alumnae Chapter

T

O THE Alpha Sigs at Akron, Ohio, the Green studio at W AKR is more than an acousticly treated room in a local radio station.

When not scheduled for broadcast this studio is occasionally given to groups such as ours for meetings, and here in April we signed our charter after airing all the "hows" and "whys" with the helpful and generous assist~nce of four members of the Cleveland chapter. Ruth Vorhees, Bette Madison, Bernice DeTchon, and Laura Mabel Smith drove all the way from Cleveland to tell us quite convincingly the values of national affil iation.

Wishing to extend our gratitude, we suggested a snack at the Garden Grille before our guests made the long trip back to their ' home. It was the nicest place we could think of, so despite a cold, raw wind we walked a block and a half in ou r eagerness for good hot food and a pleasant cheery atmosphere. We arrived all shivery and windblown . . . with very red faces, but not from the wind. The hostess apologized. "So sorry, we're not serving tonight, we're decorating. But do come in again."

In May, we met at the home of your correspondent for the expressed purpose of electing officers and making plans for the coming year.

Gwen Spiers was elected president, and rightfully so, for she had worked diligently during the preceeding months to bring the girls together and to stimulate enthusiasm for an alumnce chapter in Akron.

The June meeting was bridge, business, and buffet, all Lil Greer's lovely new home, all cozy and Cape Cod. In July, Marion Dale Paddock invited us to the summer home of her parents for a picnic, and this time we let the men out of the doghouse and onto the picnic grounds laden with baskets and whatnots for an outdoor banquet. Down winding paths, over rustic plank bridges, up moss covered stepping stones we went, to a log shelter house. We found our picnic tables in a circular pagoda-like structure, perched high on a knoll overlooking a stream. A natural spring fell down over rocks just in front of us, and the birds said their goodnights as the frogs took up the music with their even ing serenade. Ah, but

the savory aroma of delicious hamburgs is the thing that really delighted our senses and right from the capable spatula of Walter Spiers. When Gwen's husband knocks at the pe.a rly gates, the angels, I'm sure, will hand him a halo shaped like a cook's bonnet ... that gentleman can cook hamburgs. We had a grand time in spite of the fact a thunderstorm sent us scooting a little ahead of schedule .

Our first meeting this fall was at the home of Louis Holt and here we welcomed a very charming newcomer from the Buffalo chapter, Dorothy Gilmore. Lucille Adamson was filled with excitement and eager to tell the details of her trip to the convention. Her report was profuse with superlatives for the way in which the convention was handled, and for the many capable girls who contributed io its success. We were all very glad that we really are a part of so fine an organization, we were glad that we had met in the Green studio at W AKR .

Yes indeed, that studio was yet to mean more to us for on Friday night, September 19, three representatives of our chapter, Marge M iranda, Dorothy Slife, and your humble correspondent, met three members of the Cuyahoga Falls Lion's Club in a locally aired qu iz show known as "'vVas I Right?" The show, a sort of battle of the sexes, concerning psychological problems that come up in the life of the Furgusons, Pa, Ma, and their two youngsters, Betty and Bill, is sponsored by the Firestone Park Trust and Savings Bank. The judge is Dr. George L. Hayes of Akron University and the reward; twenty dollars to the winner and ten to the losing team.

Our treasury swelled easily under the load of twenty dollars but our heads . . . oh clear, our heads, girls 路... we had the highest score in the history of the program. Each participant in the contest also received a personal gift and ours was a beautifu l Dorothy Grey compact with a V insignia.

Our new "Program for the Year, 1941-1942" (thanks to Lil Greer's brain, artistry and mimeograph) promises a grand Founder's Day celebration with the Alumnce Chapter at Cleveland, Ohio.

News Letters-Alumnae Chapters ALVA, OKLAHOMA Many and varied have been the vacations of our members the past summer, some of which follow: Emogene Cox was Superintendent of the Primary Department in Vacation Bible School of the Methodist, Friends and Presbyterian Churches of Alva. She also assisted in a Girl Scout Camp m Carmen, Oklahoma.

Margaret Good Alberding spent the summer In Utah .

Racine Spicer, one of our most valuable members, attended Sorority Convention at Edgewater Beach- she also attended Columbia University this summer.

Lorinda Lane, with her daughters, spent the summer with her parents at Monrovia, California.

Katherine Nunelee spent vacation with friends and relatives in Oregon this summer, she is employed as teacher at Belva, Oklahoma.

Florence Rudy assisted with Vacation Bible School m Alva the past summer. lola Ricks Parr, of Cherokee, has been quite ill in the hospital the past summer, but is recovering at home at this time.

Wilma Greer is employed m the schools at Quinlin, Oklahoma.

Two of our members, Evelyn Bebefiel and Ruth Ricker, are teaching in the Decoma Schools this winter.

Wedding bells have been ringing for Gilberta Stiles when she acquired the name Rusco.

Eleanor Sterba of Carmen is recovering from a serious automobile wreck, she is in the hospital at this time.

Ethel Green is employed as teacher in Oxford, Kansas.

Pauline Hayworth is teaching in Douglas, Oklahoma, this winter.

Mrs. Edith Ames visi ted her son, Leon, at Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Mr. and Mrs . Geo. Clark (Minnie Wesley) at Raytown, Missouri, this past summer.

Laurel Johnston is teaching at Fargo, Oklahoma, this winter.

We are proud to have Ethel Albright as housemother at Shockley H all of Northwestern College.

Mrs. Bill Wethington (Louise Glaser) visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Glaser, this summer at Alva.

Vada Paris McGill is enjoying flying with her husband, who has recently purchased a new airplane.

Betty Lou Heaton is employed in the office of C. 0. Green Abstract Company at Alva.

Ollie Shattuck, who is employed in the Chickasha schools visited friends in Alva this summer, she also looked after her real estate holdings here.

Dorothy Jean Certain and Victor Capper were married in Enid, Oklahoma, a few months ago .

Wilda Trueax is employed in the Webster Schools at Wichita, Kansas.

Electra Lee Montgomery Freiden is now located at Waynoke, Oklahoma, where her husband is employed in Zenith gas offices.

Zelma Branson, who teaches at Kiowa, Kansas, visited her parents in Alva this summer.

Frieda Shirley Baker now lives in Wichita, Kansas.

Theta Donley Musgrove, now resides in Talkeetna, Alaska, her husband is stationed at U. S. Communication Station there.

Erlene Cline, an outstanding student of Northwestern College and a member of our sorority, has been elected 路to the position of Assistant Commercial Instructor in her Alma Mater-she is also vicepresident of Kappa Delta Pi. Catherine Quinton is teaching in Consolidates schools of Canton, Oklahoma.

Louella Harzman and Edna Donley, teachers in Alva City Schools, made an extensive tour in the Western States the past summer, visiting' many places of interest.

Mrs. Sue Edwards Trenary, wi_th her husband, small son and sister made an extensive visit in Oregon a~d other coastal states, while en route she visited lone Clark.

A baby boy-Clifford William, Jr.-has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Mann, the mother, Joyce Mann, is Chapter Sponsor.

Minnie Shockley, English instructor at Northwestern, spent several months in Long Beach, California, the past summer getting a much needed rest.

She visited many former Northwestern students and friends, coming home looking "bran new" and reporting a delightful summer.

Lois Rodgers spent the summer in Mexico City, attending school there and enjoying the beautiful scenery and climate. She has consented to give us a detailed description of her tour later.

Mrs. Nellie Azbill Cole, one of the early presidents of Gamma Gamma chapter, is quite a popular composer of songs and music in the business and ed ucational circles of Los Angeles, California. Her home is 773 Bonita Drive, Pasadena, California.

Mrs. Edna Kerst Chamberlain (Mrs. C. L.) of Tulsa, represented the Oklahoma Class Room Teachers at the National Educational Association meeting in Boston in July. Then in company with a friend toured New England and eastern Canada before returning home.

35 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS The April meeting of the Boston Alums was held at the home of Mary McAuley in Winchester.

After our business meeting at which officers for this year were elected, we were joined by the active chapter and pledges. Entertainment was furnished by movies of Mary 's trip to California.

In May we went to the home of Hazel Vaux in Swampscott, where we held a white elephant sale.

Since this was our last m eeting till fall, we bid our sisters "Au revoir but not goodbye" and left each other with happy anticipations of a pleasant summer and jolly get-togethers in the fall.

Our first fall meeting was again at Mary McAuley's. Much of the time, naturally, was taken up with Convention news. Dot Currier gave a complete report of the Convention, and Kitty Hale and Louise Santosuosso delighted us by relating some of the sidelights. Of course we were all overjoyed to hear that Kitty had been elected national treasurer.

Plans were made for our program for this year, including a special Founder's Day program in conjunction with the Actives. The first event, to which we are looking forward with much pleasure, is to be a Hallowe'en barn dance to be held at lngeborg Swensen's. The Actives and Pledges are invited to join us in the fun. Believe it or not, real barn, honest-to-goodness "punkins," corn stalks, cider and doughnuts and all the fixin's!

No more news for this time. It's so early in the season that I'm not "wound up" yet.

BUFFALO, NEW YORK Once more fall rolls around and the Pi Pi's send Autumn greetings to all Alpha Sigs! It seems ages ago, but it was really only last June, that the Alpha Sigs in and around Buffalo headed their cars toward Witch Kraft of Lake Erie to partake of the delectable luncheon planned by Edith Yesser. It was a perfect setting to entertain the graduates of 1941, the brides, and the brides-to-be. Our president, Dot Pierson, peld a short meeting at which our guests of honor were presented with corsages. Norma Williams was the winner of the Activities award and the Scholarship award went to Betty Schriener. Harriet Smith certainly deserved the thanks she received for the excellent News Letters which everyone enjoyed so much. Rose Kraft and Edith Yesser received hearty thanks for their effort which made thi s a perfect day for all Alpha Sigs.

On September 22, Harriet Smith was hostess to the Board of Directors. The air was filled with gay chatter-we had quite a bit of ground to cover since last June! However we eventually settled down to a serious bu siness meeting, discussing many plans for this year. Our annual card party is to be held in February with Edna Grampp as chairman. After adjournment, Harriet served coffee and cake which was really delicious .

October 4 found our Alumna: gathered at the lovely home of Melvina Holzman for our monthly meeting. Twenty-five of our fold were there to discuss this year's program. If an ab undance of laughter and chatting is an indication, then we are sure everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Thanks-amillion Melvina!

CANTON, OHIO Our May meeting was held at the home of Janice Marsh, who, by the way, is now busy making maps for her guests to study before they get lost on the way to her new country home. It is a lovely rambling house situated among beautiful trees. After the meeting we enjoyed an interesting game of bridge and had a very pleasant evening.

Why is it we talk so much ? All we did at Jayne Urban's in June was talk-a little nonsense- a little business-a little gossip. But one fact we did settle -Sue Campbell was to be our delegate to Conventio!).

Picture a long overcrowded table under a large tree in a fa rmyard and eleven girls around it, chattering like squirrels while eating like threshers and you have our July get-together.

Marg Crawford and family have also settled in a spacious home in the country. Share and share alike say we, so we took olives and pickles and enjoyed a Dutch Supper at her house. P. S.: We ate too much for comfort!

We never meet in August but we were all dreaming of Sue in Chicago.

The main topic of conversation fo r months was again renewed in September when we braved a decidedly bumpy road to go to Berdein Holsing's cabin.

Our delegate was so enthusiastic about Convention that we let her have the floor for the entire evening.

She told in detail everything that happened from the time she left Canton until she returned and she told it so well that we all fel t as if we had. actually gone with her. Thanks to Sue for all the newspapers, menus, etc., that she brought back .

Refreshments were served bu ffet style a nd the same All-American theme as that used at Convention was carried out in the decorations. After the coffee, we were ready for more about her trip. Many orchids to Sue for the colored movies she took in Chicago, and showed to us that night.

Mary Carfagne's new baby will never be a sorority sister, but h e certainly is a bouncing boy a nd is getting bigger already . He was born on September 17, 1941.

We will meet at Emmy Calhoun 's house in October. We always have a lot of fun there, too.

36 CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA Due to the infantile paralysis ban many of the teachers and the parents of school children are more than a month delayed in getting organized for Fall activities. This delay includes our alumna: meetings .

However a meeting, (the first for the year), ts planned for the week of October twenty-fifth at the home of Lillian Gish Eshelman in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Our only representative at the Chicago Convention was Barbara Gish Kerney, who Lillian visited in Chicago a few days later and we are hoping ~hat she will relay convention news at our first meetmg.

Several members of our group are planning to return for the Temple Homecoming events on October 18th. It is also interesting to note that five Alpha Sigs are active and attend the Lancaster County Alumna: Association Meetings and are helping plan for a dinner to honor the new Temple President, Mr. Johnson.

Travel news, summer vacation experiences and new jobs along with other personal items must wait for the next news issue until accurate details can be obtained. s. JUNE SMITH.

CLEVELAND, OHIO Our 194I-1942 season opened in a grand manner with a dinner bridge party at Bernie and Bob DeTchon's home on Saturday evening, September 2oth.

This affair was in honor of our own Virginia Carpenter who was appointed Alumna: Editor at our national convention in Chicago. A toast was given Virginia along with other good wishes . Then we obeyed orders to "fall to." Oh! that spaghetti! Ralph Besse and Bette Madison won prizes as the best spaghetti twirlers and they obliged with private lessons. A few wary ones refused to learn and continued with the cutting technique.

We must return to the May meeting to tell you of the election of officers. The following girls will guide our Cleveland chapter through this coming year: Ruth Vorhees, president; Leta Crawford, vicepresident; Ada Harvey, secretary; Augusta Besse, treasurer, Beatte Madison, publicity chairman; Eleanor Hanna, program chairman, and Ethel Goddard, courtesy chairman.

Our program books this year are most attractive, we think . They flaunt red covers, with a while A. S. A. lettered diagonally across the front. Information inside includes a list of officers, a schedule containing dates, places, and names of our various meetings and entertainments throughout the year, and closes with a list of all the active members, their addresses, and their phone numbers. We are greatly indebted to several of you for giving us ideas for our booklet.

This has been a busy summer for the girls in our chapter. We have covered most parts of United States and even branched out into Canada and Mexico.

Betsey Besse and family enjoyed their vacation in New Jersey and up and down the eastern sea shore.

Bernie visited her Omicron Omicron friend in Wtlmington, Delaware, and stopped at Virginia Beach on her way home. Ruth and Ralph Vorhees and family have been wandering around from a cottage at Vermillion on Lake Erie, thence to Pittsburgh, and finally to Detroit and home. Helen Carrington and Garry were all over Michigan, stopping for a few days' rest at Marquette. We loved hearing about Bette's thrills at the Dude Ranch near Lake George, New York. Whoa cowboy! Ada and Bill had excellent fishing in Canada. On another jaunt down to Dayton, Ohio, they visited Alice Carey Ball and husband. She is a Delta Delta girl who was one of our Cleveland members a few years back. Ruth Duffy came back much refreshed from her sojourn in Mexico. Georgia and Ethel spent most of their summers at their respective homes in southern Ohio.

Mabel Schilling took a fast drive to Kansas and then spent the remainder of the time redecorating her house. Our family spent the vacation period on Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay. Martha Borch took some time off, but not on a vacation. She had complications following the birth of Ricky in May and was a semi-invalid most of the summer. We are glad to report that she is back in the fold again feeling tops.

Today's mail brought us a card from Alice Reilly who was formerly in Cleveland with the Hotel Statler. She is now in dietetics work in the commissary at the Ravenna, Ohio, Ordnance Plant. We are hoping she will still get to some of our meetings.

COLUMBUS, OHIO Does it sound like a contradiction to you, if I start an undertaking by ending one? For such it is, when I begin the new program by first telling you of our last meeting, away back in May. We gathered that spring night at the newly built house of Leota Merions, in the "fancy-pants" part of town we call Upper Arlington . A dream house, no less! Of course, there was business as well as a grand time, but it is the fun and chatter I best remember.

Then summertime. Helen Milikan Miller was to be our delegate at the convention.

When September came, with its buffet supper at Margaret Johnson's attractive home, we all put in an appearance. Helen was to report back to us.

She is a captivating person anyway; but now she was exceedingly enthusiastic, newsy and ready to pass her enthusiasm on to those of us who weren't fortunate enough to attend convention. Listening, I saw the convention with my eyes and heart alike . And if soldier boys are still available in the days of the next convention, I suspect that more of we staid old married alumna: will be tramp, tramp, tramping off to join the conventioners. Seriously, though, we

thrilled at the size of the convention and the apparent ease with which it was mastered.

The installation services for our new officers were simple, impressive and genuine in sincerity.

We welcomed a guest, Edith Miller Simpson, from the Pittsburgh Alumn<e Chapter, who told us something of their activities. Her group sounds so lively and whole-hearted that I think we were greatly stimulated by it. The news next time can show proof ·that we are getting busy ourselves.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN Summer has been a delightful season for us all but now that the last sun tan has begun to fade along with the once pert Bowers on that near "Dashe," everyone has turned with a deep enthusiasm to the work of the year.

Delta Phi Alumn::e Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha inaugurated their Fall season with a strictlybusiness session . It was thrilling too. This 1was partly due to the inspiring reports brought by Mrs. Sarah Jane Baumgartner and Mrs. Gladys Rambler from the National Convention. This vicarious experience brought us all closer to the work of our large family. Isn't co-operation a wonderful thing?

The folks at home received a grand gift from the Convention representatives. Sarah Jane and Gladys took time out to select a large white leathercovered scrapbook which they presented to the group.

The outside of the book was interesting, but the inside was even more to our liking with the many items, pictures, and souvenirs of the Chicago activities. From time to time we expect to add to this already splendid collection .

Mrs. Sybyl Landry, our newly elected president, gave a report of her contact with a group from Alpha Sigma Alpha's newly pledged chapter of Central Michigan College of Education, which is located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Miss Louise McArthur made this trip too. Her remarks added more fuel to an already quickening spirit.

Plans were made to bolster the work of the Mu Mu . Chapter at Michigan State Normal College.

With the mention of our closest sister group, an item of sorrow was brought to us. One of the promising members, lone Rogers, met with a fatal accident while returning from a swimming party. The loss of a young hopeful life is always such a sorrow.

Sympathy has been extended to her family.

Miss Ilah B. Gifford, who was the Vice-Principal at the Burt School, was busy receiving congratulations . She has been promoted to Principal of the DuBois Elementary School, located in the western part of our busy city.

Committees were appointed, business was thoroughly discussed, and many plans were suggested before twenty-eight happy members left after a busy and profitable afternoon. Everyone had the feeling that our ship had been well launched for the year.

37 DES MOINES, lOW A Heading the list of important happenings in Des Moines comes the fascinating reports of vacations enjoyed by our members. Grace Carver and family, and Fern Johnson spent three grand weeks in the Colorado mou ntains. Lillian Jacobson enjoyed a real family vacation at the "Y" camp at Boo.ne, Iowa.

Leona W ilcox saw the Cali fornia sights by auto .

Selvys took themselves to northern Minnesota. Ida Johnson's trip sounds super-exciting; she went to Mexico City. We're all looking forward to more news of her adventures.

Of course, we wouldn't for the world overlook the exciting tales from our Convention delegate, Florence Harley. Her enthusiasm is a real inspiration to our chapter. Many of the ideas she brought back from Chicago sound grand to us.

38 HUNTINGTON, W. VA. Once more fall rolls around and it's time for alumna: meetings. We started off with eight members meeting at Doris Hart's home. Helen Maxwell, our new president, presided. Devotionals, the poem, "My Creed," and a prayer were given by the chaplain, Edith Shafer. A tentative program for the year was given us by the program committee to be discussed and revised. A hand book committee was appointed to work up a book to include a directory of names, addresses and telephone numbers, programs and schedule of each meeting for the year.

We discussed a project of helping crippled children at a local hospital. This project will include reading to the children on Sunday afternoons, providing them with pictures and scissors, scrap books and old magazines. Materials are to be collected at a later date and delivered to the children.

We want a good attendance at our meetings this year so Helen appointed a calling committee, Winifred Burkhardt and Edith Shafer. They are to notify each member of regular meetings and of any change of meetings or special services.

After the business meeting adjourned, Doris Hart and Helen Maxwell, our hostesses, served a delightful dessert course around a candle lit table.

On September 1st, six of us met with Effie Mae Thomas. Three visitors from the local college chapter met with us, Rowena Mays, Janie Weinberger, and Margaret Paul. Effie Mae presided in the absence of Helen Maxwell, our president, who's business kept her out of town.

We were delighted to hear of the highlights of the National Convention from Rowena Mays .

Devotionals were given by Edith Shafer. Our program for September was a brief history of the sorority and a synopsis of the constitution pertaining to the Alumna: organization.

A new editor was elected because Josephine Peters, previous editor, has a teaching position out of town and won't be meeting with us this year, so I'm "it."

Around the refreshment table we learned that our hostess, Effie Mae, is leaving for New York City the second week in October to attend the New York State Osteopathic Convention with her husband, Dr. Thomas. We also heard about Dorothy Callicoat's vacation with her fami ly in Eastern Virginia where she toured colonial Williamsburg. They also spent a week's vacation in Lost River State National Park. Doris Hart spent some time in New Jersey.

We hear that Helen Maxwell is going to visit Doris Feeley Lawson soon. We miss Doris this year. We read in the local newspaper that Mary Lena Meade was married to Mr. John Robert Griest, in Cattletsburg, Kentucky, September 3, where she holds a teaching position.

mann, our president and delegate, explained to me, Eloise Proctor just couldn't attend, as her mother had recently undergone an operation; and Evelyn Hall would be at her sister's cabin; Helen Emick had decided to join her sister on a trip to Washington; and Esther Burge was going to look after Dorothy's daughter while Dorothy was delegate- therefore those girls just couldn't possibly get to convention, worse luck! As we congregated in the east lounge of the Edgewater for our first business meeting, there they sat! We were happy that so many could get to this very important meeting. Beside those mentioned were our-and your- Genevieve Leib, Martha Stuckey, Marie Kingdon, Jean McCammon, Lena Grumme, Geraldine Holton, and I. Of the history-making events that transpired, you will read in other pages of this issue.

Our first meeting of the year was held in the home of Betty Rice. There was a fine attendance.

We have changed our time for getting together this year to the second Monday of each month. It seems more convenient for our members to attend in the evening. Saturday afternoon is the "only chance" to get so many things done! Plans were made for the rush party to be given for Chi Chi chapter in Muncie. Committee chairmen were appointed to have charge of the various duties for the year. Convention was discussed briefly.

We are happy to welcome a new member to our group. She has come to us from Jefferson City, Missouri, and is Helen Lortz from Eta Eta chapter, Pittsburg, Kansas. We are so glad you found us, Helen. (It was through seeing a picture of several of us who were to attend convention, in the paper, that Helen !'earned how to contact us .)

On Saturday evening, September 13, the Anderson-Muncie alumna: chapter joined us in giving our annual rush party for Chi Chi chapter at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Indiana. A formal dinner was held at the Roberts Hotel in Muncie. The theme was South American. The committee in charge of Indianapolis alumna:'s part in the affair were Geraldine Holton, chairman, Jane McDavitt (and a most vivacious radio announcer and questioner she was too!), Letha Gaskins, Martha Stuckey, and Edith Wakeland.

Vashti Burr Whittington, National President of the Women's Professional Panhellenic Association, attending the meeting of the American Bar Association in Indianapolis this week, was honored at a dinner on Tuesday evening, September 30, by members of the sororities in W. P. P . A. Genevieve Leib was general chairman, and master of ceremonies. Assisting her were Mrs. Edward Karrmann, president of our Indianapolis alumna: chapter, Mrs. R. C. beautiful selections on the harp. Mrs. Whittington talked to the group, giving the history of the organization of W. P. P. A., and its member sororities.

She then presented a discussion of the Professional Women's participation in defense activities, as it had been developed in the forum held in Washington. Since the speaker and honor guest's legal sorority, Phi Delta Delta, was having its executive meeting here, five of its national officers were able to attend this Women's Professional Panhellenic Association dinner.

May we take this occasion to wish for every chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha a year of aspiration and attainment. To our officers of the past three years, may we express our love and gratitude for their outstanding leadership. To our newly elected Council, may we pledge our cooperation and our faith in their guidance through the days to come.

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI Time flies! Yes, indeed it does. It seems ages ago, the 2oth of May to be explicit, that thirty-one Kansas City alumna: gathered at the home of Marion Fischer for one of the most unusual meetings of the year. Preceding a delightful dinner served by the hostesses, Dulcie Cal houn, Alice Thomas, Evelyn Evans, Virginia Drain, and Marion, an installation service was held for the new officers who were elected at the April meeting at the home of Jane Isaacks.

Wilma Sharp wrote the service and Esther Bucher greeted each officer as she came to light her candle and accept her duties for the coming year. The officers installed were: president, Rubye Waterbury; vice-president, Margaret Bryant; recording secretary, Alice Thomas; corresponding secretary, Evelyn Evans; treasurer, Kathryn Keirns; editor, Marion Fischer; publicity chairman, Jane Isaacks; courtesy chairman, Jean Hutchinson; directory chairman, Mildred Hanthorn; and ways and means chairman, Dorothy Kreek.

After dinner Wilma conducted an initiation service for Vella McKeen of Gamma Gamma chapter.

Vella was a member of Sorosis but circumstances prevented her being initiated at the time that the other members of her group affiliated with Alpha Sigma Alpha. We were very happy to have the privilege of initiating her and everyone enjoyed hearing the initiation service once again.

Summer time means vacation time for most of the Kansas City A. S. A . alums. Regularly monthly meetings were discontinued as the members were scattered from coast to coast. June 14th ten couples breezed over to the Elms Hotel at Excelsior Springs for dinner and dancing. Dignity was laid aside for the evening when the girls were requested to take part in the Gay Nineties floor show. It was amaz-

ing what hidden talent was revealed b~fore. the evening was over. The master of ceremomes d1scovered that two girls, Ola Grimes and Marion Fischer, were celebrating their birthdays, so he had the orchestra play "Happy Birthday" for them and he present_e d them with a decorated birthday cake. He also mtroduced the "Hurdle dance" to the group and if you haven't tried it-well!

The third Saturday in June we took our husbands and escorts to Happy Days Farm for a picnic.

There "your friends met my friends and my friends met your friends" and we all had a jolly good time.

After eating too much as one usually does at a p1cmc, we sang Alpha Sig songs and adjourned when the mosquitoes joined the party.

Our picnic in June was such a success that we decided to have another one, so in July we met at the North Kansas City Waterworks Park where we all enjoyed seeing each other again and exchanging news about the girls who were away for the summer.

The Board of Directors had its first meeting September 9th at the home of Margaret Bryant, Vera Salyer was elected recording secretary to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Alice Thomas.

The editorial staff published the first News Letter of the year, September r8th. The staff will vouch for the fact that reporters keep late hours.

A life membership contest was held last winter, so Saturday, September 2oth, a Dutch line party was given at the Newman Theater. Afterward the girls on the losing side treated their victorious sisters at Liggetts' Balcony.

Although the glamor and glory of the Convention belong to the past, the memory of it became a vital part of our chapter September 26th at a luncheon at the W oodlea Hotel in honor of Wilma Sharp, National President, and Esther Bucher, National Secretary. In keeping with the convention theme, the committee, Jean Hutchison, Jo Wady, and Dorothy Hutchison, chose All-American as the subject of the luncheon. Dulcie Calhoun, in behalf of the Kansas City chapter, presented Wi lma with an Alpha Sigma Alpha bracelet and gave Esther a compact with the ASA crest on it as tokens of our esteem for them. Our chapter president and delegate to convention, Rubye Waterbury, gave a report of her trip in such an inspiring manner that we all felt we were really part of the throbbing pulse of a great living oroganization. She brought many souvenirs from Edgewater Beach for our scrap book. Conventions don't just happen. They require months and months of careful planning and much goes on behind scenes that we don't know about, so Esther let us take a peek behind the curtains and told us a few of the things that keep the show going. Wilma told us many amusing little incidents that occurred at convention and made us realize the wonderful fellowships and friendships that exist among girls associated in sorority work. At the close of the meeting every girl was so inspired by the reports given that there should be a huge crowd at the next convention.

Personal Tidbits I. Doris Balthis was married in June to Ed Boley and is living in Blue Springs, Missouri. They were in the East two weeks on their honeymoon.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA Dear Alpha Sigs: This is the Los Angeles Alumna: Chapter on the "Air" again for our latest news items.

The first meeting of the year was a tea given on September the 27th at the home of Katherine Hunsicker. The active chapter (Xi Xi) was invited so that we could become better acquainted with its members. No business was transacted that day and everyone gossiped and chattered to their hearts content! We were all so happy to see Myrle Patterson who is living in Long Beach. She has been there for three months and hopes to be with us all winter.

Frankie Opperman is another we would like to see more often . Marion Sanderson was among those present and is beginning to feel herself again after a siege of illness. Others who came to the tea were Katherine Bolton, Lillian Bradley, Nell Grant, Louise Hinds, Gladys Ludlam, Lois McDonald Lewis and Katherine Hunsicker.

Marie Berry was our representative at Convention . However, she has not returned home as yet; since she and Mr. Barry took quite an extensive trip

through the east. They went to Quebec, stopping at Toronto for a few days. Then they visited in Waterbury, Connecticut, on a farm on which the home was built in r69o and had been restored. They were in Newark several weeks and Washington several weeks . In addition they took side trips into Pennsylvania and Virginia. They expect to arrive at home about the 7th of October. We are very happy to have Marie elected National Registrar.

Dorothy Linden was married to AliÂŁ Rolfson Bryan on August 3rd. They are living now in Tehachapi where Dorothy has been teaching.

Barbara Held writes that she is still at V isalia working in Tulare County with the Welfare Department and is quite busy.

Kay Balzer Tracy and her husband have been living in Seattle, for several months. He works for Douglas but was sent to do some special work in the draughting department for Boeing. They expect to be back in California soon.

August 23, Eleanor Bohn was married to Bruce Walter Kowalewsky in St. Kevin's Church.

Katherine Hunsicker and her family have taken up ice skating in a big way! They skate at the Westwood Tropical Ice Gardens where year around outdoor ice skating is enjoyed.

Betty Lou Rose spent her summer working at the Kirk, Tracey Lodge at Arrowhead but now has returned to her teaching in Imperial Valley.

Do you remember we told you last year how much we enjoyed an open-house up at the Berry's in Altadena? While up that way most of us drove through "Christmas Tree Lane." Perhaps those of you who have not seen this holiday spectacle would be interested in knowing that ro,ooo colored lights are used on this "mile" of Christmas trees on Santa Rosa A venue . The lighting of these trees was begun in 1920 by the Kiwanis Club of Pasadena and has been carried out each year from Christmas Eve to New Year's night.

The trees were grown from seeds brought from the slopes of the Himalaya Mountains in India, where its name, Deodar, signifies "Tree of God." They were set ' out in r885 along what was then the driveway on the 900-acre ranch belonging to Col. F. J. Woodbury, a pioneer resident. They are about roo feet tall and have a spread of from fo rty to fifty feet . So, it is no wonder that they have become one of the important "things to be seen" by visitors and residents alike .

In September, the Commodore's Cruise, a yearly affatr fo r yacht owners, was held at the Catalina Isthmus. Lucille and George Taylor and family participated in this finale of the yachting year on their schooner, the Suez. An important part of the affair was the Hawaiian luau (feat); there were boat races and a tug of war between row boats tied together. No need to say that everyone had a grand time. Lucille is Lucille Sands, formerly of Alpha Beta Chapter, Kirksville, Missouri.

41 MARYVILLE, MISSOURI Our annual Alpha Sig summer picnic was held in July at the Country Club with a large number of actives and alumna: attending. The Maryville alumna: chapter will be' much larger this year as we have several new members. The officers elected for the coming year are: President, Barbara Zeller; VicePresident, Harriet Lasell; Secretary, Mrs . Robert Geist; Treasurer, Martha Jane Hamilton; PHoENIX Correspondent, Mrs. Verlin Powers.

Mrs . Malcolm Frank, nee Nyda Snyder, lives on a farm near King City, Missouri.

Sarah V . Thompson and Roy C. Snow were married August 8. They live in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Patty Farris was married June 29 to Verlin Powers of Maryville. They live at 6ro East Fourth Street.

Three Phi Phi alumni members have had "blessed events" this summer. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Stalcup (Isabel McDaniels), Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Dinsdale (Rdell Check), and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Weir (Ludmila Vavra) are the proud parents.

Two more alumna: members will add "Mrs." to their names this month. Harriet Lasell will marry James Ray at the Methodist Church in Maitland on Saturday, September 20. They will li ve on a farm in a beautiful new house.

Mary Jeanette Anthony will be married September 21 to Harold Hull at the Maryville Presbyterian Church. They will make their home in Peoria, Illinois.

MUNCIE, INDIANA The May meeting of Chi Chi Alumna: was held at the home of Esther Arnott, our president, in Anderson. We had as guests the grad uating Chi Chi's at Ball State. Genevieve Leib and Marie Kingdon, of Indianapolis, were there. (Their presence adds zip to any meeting). A delicious pot luck dinner was enjoyed, after which we had a business meeting. Plans were made fo r convention delegates, and the fall rush party at Ball State was discussed .

In July the alumna: and summer students enjoyed a picnic at McCulloch Park. More convention talk and more and more enthusiasm!

Marjorie Hutchins, former Chi Chi president, surprised us by announcing her marriage, which took place four years ago. She is Mrs. John Scott.

Marjorie Harrider, convention delegate, was greatly impressed by the interesting and attractive personalities of all the girls at the convention.

NEW YORK CITY In our New York alumn:e group we have a number of hardy souls who travel by bus and by train, through weather fair or foul, month in and month out, just to attend our Manhattan meetings. But for the final meeting last Spring and the first meeting this Fall the tables were turned and the chapter did the traveling en masse!

In June Billie Barrett (KK) gave a luncheon at Montclair, N. J. Eleven of us met at Times Square and jolted out to Jersey by bus. The party was at the lovely antique-furnished home where Billie lives during the school year. We spent the afternoon ( r) admiring the house, ( 2) strolling in the yard, and (3) being amazed by Billie's cooking! We also got around to electing officers after a few unsuccessful attempts by the nominating committee to elect themselves. After the hilarity we settled down and chose Marion Thomas for President, Em Coleman Frost for Vice-President, and Betty Murphy McGrath for Secretary-Treasurer.

Our first Fall meeting was at the opposite end of our orbit at Sayville, L. I. Gladys Young Kaiser gave a luncheon to prove just how efficient a bride can be. (Glad and Bob Kaiser were married in Buffalo on August 2.) After a grand lunch Marion Thomas reported on convention, Horace Heidt, and the army, all of which sounded very interesting.

Miss Rosamond Root reported on the plans which are being made for the National Convention of Women's Professional Panhellenic Association, being held at the Hotel Pennsylvania November 21-23. A formal dinner has been planned for November 21 and a luncheon for the following day. The week-end will find our New York Alpha Sigs well represented on the arrangement committees and we're hoping to have a large delegation at the meetings.

The meeting at Glad's ended with our usual ex-

change of news and gossip, and as an added attraction a big birthday cake in honor of Miss Ida Jewett.

At one of the parties held for Glad last Spring the engagement of her Maid of Honor, Betty Stratemeier (Pi Pi) to Bill Greene was announced. Betty became Mrs. Greene on September 27 and is now living at Arlington, Virginia.

Mary Jane Altenburg (AG) was married to Michael Baldwin in August. They both teach at Sayville, L. I., but at present Mike is at Harvard taking his Doctor's degree.

Mary Shreder of Attica, N. Y., is teaching at Pawling, N. Y., this year and so we're hoping to add her to our commuters' list.

We're losing Alice Weatherstone Brown (Pi Pi) because the U. S. Coast Guard needs her husband with his sword and epaulets in Boston. Her new address is unknown to date but the Boston Alums will be hearing from her. Lucky people.

In exchange we're welcoming to our chapter Martha L. Morse of Boston who is now living in Forest Hills, L. I. We were happy to learn that Betty Langan Terrar (Pi Pi) of Plainfield, N. J., has a baby daughter.

Guess that takes care of the Gotham news for the Fall.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA Another summer to look back on-another winter to look forward to. Looking back, those that journeyed to Chicago have memories of a wonderful Convention. Those of us who remained at home have varied experiences to rememoer and perhaps cherish. We all heard about Convention, however, and all wished we could have attended along with our representative, Kay Ludlow.

We heard all the news at our first meeting of the year in September at a picnic held at the home of one of our members, Chickie Hey! Shain. And a mighty fine picnic that was. The committee, headed

by Betty Campbell, made sure we had plenty to eat.

No planned entertainment was necessary-summer highlights were the main topics of conversation.

Old and new members alike seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly.

The diamond trade 路 must have been very busy this summer to look at the number of our girls who received them. Flo Reiff got a sparkler from John Watson Morrison, Ensign in the U. S. Navy, San Diego, California. We are afraid that means we will be saying good bye to her very soon. Cupid's darts also reached the following couples: Jean Wolf and Mr. Johnson, Ruth Ada Owen and Thomas Pilkington, Virginia Burtis and Joseph Seaton, Marie Bauerle and William I. English, Janet Harding and Bill Herman, Gerry Shellenberger and John McCracken. Ruth Evert is also engaged.

NovEMBER, 1941 Keller has moved to Springfield, Massachusetts. She gave up her business career to become a home manager.

The biggest news that reached our chapter was that our own Alvadee Hutton won a Pulitzer prize in journalism. She has worked very hard all this past year at Columbia and was chosen from contestants all over the country.

We have quite a varied program planned for this year and so look forward to a very interesting and profitable winter. But for now, "That's all folks!"

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA After a summer of activities that took members to the four corners of the country, ten of us met at the home of Kay Davey on September 13 for the first meeting of the year. If that meeting is an indication of what's to come, our chapter is not lacking in energy nor enthusiasm! There was a display of the drawer full of souvenirs that the conventiongoers had collected in Chicago. Kay and her committee served a nice lunch, and while we downed the delicious food we managed to hear what had been happening to each other since last we met.

We welcome with open arms Eleanore Smith Thomas, KK, whose husband's work has brought them to Pittsburgh. We hope that they are settled here for a long, long time. She has accepted a national chairmanship so that others are going to have the opportunity of working with her, too.

Mildred Weber, AG, became Mrs. Paul Brown at a ceremony performed in the chapel at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on the seventh of June. While on their wedding trip a truck completely demolished their car, and by great good fortune neither Mildred nor Paul were seriously injured, though they were considerably cut and bruised and shaken up. We are glad to welcome Paul as a new member of our men's auxiliary.

Helen Elsw,orth Ball, NN, and her family have returned to Pittsburgh to live. We are looking forward to having her with us to get some ideas as to how Chicago and other cities in which she has lived, run their alumn<£ chapters.

Ruth Sutherland Miller, NN, is president of the Woman's Club of McDonald this year.

Marion Ball Wilson, NN, attended the summer session at the Pennsylvania State College and is teaching again this year in the Zelienople High School.

Ann Schade, KK, spent part of the summer visiting in the east-and attending auction sales. We're anxious to see some of the antiques that she found.

In the next issue of THE PHOENIX we hope to tell of the Women's Professional Panhellenic Association organizing dinner that is to be held in Pittsburgh in November, also of the progress made in the development of our philanthropic work for the year, as well as a party that the men's auxiliary is sponsoring.

43 ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI Our first meeting of the year is to be held October rr at Maurine Lemley's new home in Webster Woods. Elizabeth Woody is to be assisting hostess.

At this meeting we will have the election of officers for the year 1941-I942.

Since our picnic last spring there has been no meeting of our group so that news is rather scarce.

However after we have our first meeting of the year we should be able to write a much more interesting news letter.

This year in December we will have our luncheon during the Missouri State Teachers Meeting for all the alumn<£ that come into the sessions. We always enjoy these meetings greatly as it gives us a chance to renew old acquaintances and make new ones.

We are quite anxious to hear about the convention at Chicago, although we had no delegate present. So the next issue of THE PHOENIX should be very interesting.

And so the St. Louis Alumn<£ Chapter sends greetings to all the alumn<£ and college chapters for the new year.

TOLEDO, OHIO During the absence of "ye correspondent" from the May meeting of the Toledo alumn<£ chapter there was an election of officers. At this time we are privileged to present Dorothy Brewster Cummins, Alpha Alpha, our new president; Martha Tom Condit, Upsilon Upsilon, our vice-president; and Helen Klag Osmun, Upsilon Upsilon, secretary and treasurer. Not being present to speak in my own behalf another year of writing seems to be my particular lot.

Looking back to last June roth doesn't seem like a dream for we did enjoy a delicious pre-vacation luncheon at Zimmerman's with practically one hundred per cent attendance.

Our fall season opened Saturday afternoon, September 2oth, in the home of our president. During the regular business session clever year booklets were presented to all members by Martha Condit. 44 most happy to have Catherine Book, Delta Delta, as our guest at our first meeting. Later in the afternoon Dorothy served an appetizing lunch of moulded fruit salad, nut bread sandwiches and her mother's famous California marmalade.

Several of our members enjoyed interesting trips during the past summer. Helen Cook spent five delightful weeks in Montana getting lots of local color through mountain drives and horse back riding.

Dorothy Cummins motored through Canada with her husband. Clara Kuney and Helen Osmun report a cool summer due to lake breezes. Grace Haworth spent two months with her husband, Colonel Haworth, Supply Officer for the Ordnance Replacement Training Center at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Here, thanks to a PHoENIX news item, she met Lillian Fuller Sutton, Alpha Gamma. Lillian, a June bride, is the wife of Lieutenant James Sutton, Adjutant of the Unit Training Center at Aberdeen . A most unusual and gay season of army social activities has been recorded by both Alpha Sigs.

Incidently this news-letter finds your correspondent again in Maryland after three weeks in Toledo. Commuting from Ohio to Maryland seems to be in her cards for the future.

Last but not least by any means Marjorie Rairdon Fuller, Alpha Alpha, presented her husband with a fine son September 9th. The name is Lawrence Robert Fuller.

We are a happy dozen now but will be glad to welcome new members and visitors to our meetings at any time .

Hazel Howell Row, Mrs. Marcette Hobson Hamm, Mrs. Bess Marsh Magers, Miss Lora Patterson, Miss Rena Mae Long, Miss Julia Christie. During the meeting officers for the coming year were elected.

It was decided that Miss Rena Mae Long would be our Alpha Sigma Alpha representative at convention this summer. We all extended wishes for a successful convention in Chicago and wish that we all could be there.

September 25-Miss Lora Patterson opened her home to the Alpha Sigs, the purpose was for planning our meetings for this year. We are looking forward to a pleasant year with our Alpha Sig girls.

WASHINGTON, D. C. The Washington Alumn:e Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha is not yet old enough to have accumulated a history. We were organized at the Regional Meet in Washington in April, 1940. Dorothy Williams was elected President, and a fortunate choice we made. We were all new and strangers to each other, with no by-laws and no precedents. But Dorothy seems to have a talent for organization, and our chapter has functioned as smoothly and as enjoyably as if we had had years of experience.

We are now one year old, and have had another election of officers. Since our by-laws (newly adopted) forbid two consecutive terms in the same office, we have a new group of officers. Martha Dimond (Mrs. John) was elected President. Martha is a charming and able person. She is a graduate of Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. She took a B.S. in Education. She majored in Latin. She was employed in a clinical status in R.R .B. She attended the Convention at Old Point Comfort in 1934. Those of you who were there will remember her for she has an unusual type of b~auty, the heart-shaped face that lends itself to a close and simple hairdress . She has a very pleasant speaking voice and interesting things to say with it. She came to Washington to take a position with A.A .A. There she met John Dimond whom she married. They have a son two years old.

The new Vice-President, who is also my successor as PHOENIX Correspondent, is Georgeanna Page.

Georgeanna, being an outstanding member of the National Sorority, has been extensively written up on several occasions. So, you will probably remember that she is a brilliant and most attractive woman.

She does important work for the Department of Commerce.

Dorotohy Stone was elected Secretary and Treasurer. Dorothy is a lovely girl- the shy type. She was educated in Baltimore, Md., and at Temple University. She majored in English and Sociology and received her AB in 1939. Since then she has worked for the American Security & Trust Co. As a graduate activity she has attended the American Institute of Banking. Following the well known practice of these shy and gentle girls, she got herself engaged to a brilliant fellow student at Temple, and we are ~lready excited at the prospect of having a wedding m the chapter. Her fiance will receive his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in June . Unfortunately for us, Dorothy will make her home in Detroit after her marriage . This election took place in the attractive apartment of Sarah Lee Eiselman where we had our May meeting. We had such a good time and such good things to eat that we found it hard to get down to business, but felt at the end of the meeting that we had accomplished a great deal.

Another member of our chapter of whom I have not told you is Elizabeth Smith Hoffecker (Mrs. John S.) . She is one of the more talented members

of our group, and is well known in the musical circles of Washington. She sings in the choir of the Petworth Methodist Church, and is accompanist and director of the children's choir. She was born and lived her early life in Bridgeville, Delaware. She went to school at the University of Delaware and then to Temple University where she majored in Physical Education. She was married in 1924, and has two children, a boy thirteen and a girl nine. She and her husband are building a beautiful new home and the whole chapter follows the operation with interest, demanding reports on progress at each meeting. The house is now so nearly finished that we look forward to having our June meeting with Elizabeth.

I would like to tell you more about the Women's Professional Panhellenic Association meeting which was well attended by our memhers. Dorothy Williams was Chairman of the large and important luncheon, and Sarah Lee Eiselman managed transportation. But this letter has already grown too long.

I cannot close it, however, without mentioning the fact that Mrs. Kreek from the Kansas City Chapter, has been a visitor in Washington, and that we very much enjoyed having her here.

Saturday, September 20, may have been just another Saturday to many Alpha Sigs, but it was a big day for Washington Alumna: Chapter. We not only met for our first fall meeting, but we heard first of all about the Chicago Convention from none other than Regina Offerman and from her guest, Mrs. Clinton Berry. We felt -quite honored in having the opportunity to meet and know Mrs. Berry. She, as you know, is our newly elected Alpha Sigma Alpha Registrar. She is a charming, gracious person and Alpha Sigs are indeed fortunate in having her a member of their National Council. Her home is in Altadena, one of the beauty spots of California.

We had such a gay time in hearing all about the high lights of the convention and what each of us had done since last meeting in June, that we put aside all business and made it a purely social meeting. Time passed so quickly that your chapter editor, who was hostess for the meeting, regretted that she could not have made it a week-end affair.

Since the installation of our Washington Alumna: Chapter our local editor and PHOENIZ correspondent has been Mrs. Jessie Scott Arnold. Her talent in the art of such an office will be greatly missed, and we ask your indulgence in trying to replace her.

Dear Alpha Sigs: Here it is Fall and school time again! Another summer gone but not forgotten. We may have forgotten the Sunday School picnics, the week in the mountains, or even a summer school session, but we of Alpha chapter haven't and will never forget our house party at Virginia Beach. Each year the girls declare it better than the last one. There's never quite such a grand time as when Alpha Sigs, old and new, get together with the one purpose of having fun.

Guess we'll have to put the memories away and start making new ones. With so much material and opportunity, we feel sure they'll be bigger and better than usual.

Isn't it wonderful to dress up your chapter rooms (maybe you're lucky and have a whole house!) and know that it's the prettiest in the school? Wait until we get our new rug, chair, curtains, and a few other trimmings and we'll challenge anyone. 'Course, we have our national president's visit in mind, too.

That brings to mind her visit in November. A few of us have been privileged to meet Mrs. Sharp and so are looking forward to having that pleasure again. Those who haven't . have heard the others rave on so about her personality that they can hardly wait for the outstanding occasion.

School has only been in session two weeks, so as yet, news is scarce. Senior dance has been set for December 6th and even closer is our annual Circus, but so far committee heads and chairmen haven't been appointed. Of course, our talented Alpha Sigs will be among those on the outstanding lists.

In my next letter I hope to have more news. In the meantime, Alpha chapter wishes to each and every chapter the best year they've ever had.

ALPHA BETA Kirksville State Teachers College, Kirksville, Missouri

Hello every one. Here at Kirksville we're all back from a wonderful summer, and now we're so busy we hardly know what we are doing.

In my letter last spring, if you remember, I told you we were getting all ready for our Breakfast Dance in honor of the seniors. That dance was a big success, and we all enjoyed ourselves. The dance lasted from five a. m. (were we ever sleepy?) until eight when we ate breakfast. We were all anxious that the seniors have something to remember us by so we gave them compacts with A.S.A. engraved on them.

During the summer a number of our girls were married. Among these was our chosen delegate to

the Convention, Helen Mayor. So we had to choose another delegate. She was Ida Mae Redky. We decided to send a second girl, Amy Ayres, with her.

This fall when we were all · back we initiated seven more girls and then went to work on our rushing plans. · However we had to take more time out from planning rushing to elect and install some new officers.

We installed Frances Rain as president. She had been elected vice-president· last year but with Helen Mayor's marriage she moved up a step. To take her place as vice-president we elected Margaret Pegues.

Betty Sue Gardiner, our secretary, left school last summer, ·so to replace her Ida Mae Redky was elected.

Right now we are in the throes of rushing. In a week comes our annual Gypsy Dance. Then the next week we have our afternoon party. As yet we have not completed plans for this party.

We are rushing thirty-five girls and hope to get a majority of them. In my next letter I'll be able to tell you just how well we succeeded.

September 29 finally brought the Alpha Gams back together after a summer of various experiences.

On account of the infantile paralysis epidemic in certain parts of Pennsylvania, not all of the students were permitted to return until then, though college was officially opened on the 22nd.

It is grand to be back again with our sorority sisters, Miss Belden and Miss Mahachek. However, there seems to be something wrong as we look over our group. What is it? Well, we miss the girls who did not return this fall. Excepting those who graduated, the active members who did not return include: Ruth Jane Guy of Frackville, Mrs. Richard Stevens, formerly Janet Waring of Johnstown, and Rebecca Greenlee of Warren who is now attending Iowa State University.

Activities for our new year began with the celebration of the founding of our sorority. We had a delightful luncheon at the Indiana Country Club on September 27. About fifty Alpha Sigs, including many alumn;e and active members, gathered there where our chapter president and our delegate to the convention, Rhoda Hunter, gave a very interesting report on the convention.

We are now turning all our efforts to having a successful rush party on November the eighth, which is to be held at the college. We will entertain those Freshmen girls of the college that we think will become good Alpha Sigs.

CUFF NOTES: It seems that the love bug is one active litde insect ( ?) around here this year.

Doris Smith, Theobelle Leonhardt, Dorothy Jean Certain and Gilberta Stiles have all felt love's call, and have changed their names, while Leota Leeper, Clara Williams, Bertha Alice Green, Evelyn Benifiel, Jonnie Lane, and Dorothy Riggs have all expressed the same ideas about the future by sporting "sparklers" on the third finger-left hand.

Even taking all these girls' ideas into consideration, everything seems to be pointing towards a wonderful year for .the Alpha Sigs. Well, that's ~ll for now. Goodbye until December.

EPSILON EPSILON Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas

Epsilon Epsilon chapter has really been busy these first few weeks of school. The first thing we did was to initiate Janice Polley and Polly Wilcox. That brought our active membership up to twenty-two.

Rush week was a lot of fun for all of us.

Everyone was glad to renew old friendships and to meet new girls. We had several nice parties using the "western" theme. On Pledging Day we welcomed seventeen girls into our chapter.

Our job then was to acquaint our pledges with the fraternity boys and we had three Open Houses.

Although they were mainly for the new girls the actives seemed to have a good time too.

We have a new sponsor with us this year and we were glad to initiate her at our last meeting. She is Miss Forest Mae Erickson. We also have a new chapter big sister, Mrs. Basil Cooney.

After one postponement because of rain we finally had our annual Hayrack Ride. Almost eighty Alpha Sigs and their guests filled two big hayracks and rode to the country for a wonderful picnic. We had an inpromptu but very original program by the pledges besides grou? singing and lots of food .

And now that the actives have entertained the pledges, things are being reversed in preparation for the next Pledge Party to be November r. I'll tell you about it next time so that's all for now.

ZETA ZETA Central Missouri State Teachers College, Warrensburg, Missouri

The main activity of the chapter during the summer was a house party given by Sara Frances Gray at her home near Blairstown, Missouri. The members and prospective rushees met at the Artesian Park a~ C_linton, Mi~souri, where they enjoyed a swim and picmc supper, after which they went to Miss Gray's farm and spent the night.

Rush actiVIties the opening week of school included many jelly dates, an informal party, a preferential dinner, and a dance given for the pledges by the actives . For our informal _party we gave a "Shipmates Party" on the sundeck at the new Yeater Hall for Women. We carried the nautical theme throughout the evening of entertainment. We held our formal dinner at a private home in Warrensburg, serving coffee and mints later at the residence hall.

The formal pledge dance was held in the recreation room at our school, with our College Club Orchestra furnishing the music .

Eleven girls accepted bids to the sorority. Six of these girls pledged at this time, while the others will pledge later. Two of them, Patsy Magee and Dorothy McMeekin, are daughters of Alpha Sigs.

The pledges, instead of having to do embarrassing things during the week following pledge service, observed a courtesy week. During this week they did all they could to help the actives, and made calls upon alumna: and patronesses of the sorority and some members of the faculty. Then at the end of the week, the actives and pledges enjoyed a party together, the main part of which was a scavenger hunt.

Our chapter is unusually fortunate to have the new residence hall for our home this year. We are the only sorority on the campus to enjoy this privilege. The members have their rooms together in one wing of the dormitory, where they can live m a congenial group.

ASA Broadcasting from Eta Eta Chapter: Summer activities included meetings and informal rushing. Eta Eta's 2oth birthday was observed with a luncheon at the Country Club. It was interesting to hear the older girls tell about the early days of the chapter- their triumphs and their difficulties . It makes the present active members think how much we owe these girls for our present organization. In the evening a dinner-dance was held at Sagmount, a summer resort near Joplin.

Also in July the chapter gave its annual rush party down at Red Oak Lodge near Riverton. The day's activities included bridge, archery and swimming.

In the evening a huge picnic supper was served.

There was oodles of food and most of us forgot our diets and really feasted .

In August there was a breakfast for rushees at Dr. and Mrs. Veatch's farm. There breakfast was served around the grill in the yard. Did the rushees ever enjoy themselves and also the actives!

The rest of the time the girls were very busy with coke dates, taking rushees to the shows and bridge parties.

School started off with a bang. Many of the outof-town girls came back several days before school started. The sorority house had been painted during

the month of August. Were we ever proud of it!

Those last few days were one grand rush--covering chairs, hanging curtains, arranging rooms and in general getting ready for the beginning of school.

The Sunday before school started the chapter gave a Mother-Daughter Tea for the rushees and their mothers. By the end of the day we had ten in our house-the only house on the campus to have its house full the day before school began.

On Tuesday we had a luncheon for the rushees.

Originally it was planned to be held out-of-doors at Mary Jane Keller's. Tuesday morning came and also the Rain came. So instead of the picnic luncheon served outside it was served in the house. What is the advantage of being outside when you can lounge around on the floor?

"Debutante Week" was the theme of our formal rush week. The alumna: gave the "Coming Out Tea" at the home of Mrs. C. F. Spencer. Saturday night was the preferential dinner at the Hotel Besse.

The dinner was entitled "An Alpha Deb Steps Out." The place cards were little miniature wooden dolls and little wooden flower pots. The program was fronted with a modernistic sketch of a debutante.

The table decorations were various colored streamers.

The centerpiece was carnations shaded from red to white. Around the room were vari-colored balloons arranged like bouquets of flowers. The favors were cologne and yarn necklaces and corsages. After the dinner we went to Mrs. John Ira Clements home for after dinner coffee.

Another flash! On Monday afternoon we learned from the Dean of Women that twenty girls had decided to go Alpha. Were we ever thrilled! The cream of the rushees had become Alpha pledges.

They are really a cute group of girls. So many of them are very talented in music and dramatics. They are so full of pep.

The following Sunday we had formal pledging at the sorority house. Afterwards we went to Harry's Cafe for dinner. The Alphas really took over the place.

A week following pledging we had active initiation. Four of the girls we had pledged had credits to go active.

The chapter is very busy planning a program for an all-school chapel. Also a group is working up a fifteen-minute radio program to be presented over the local station.

Flash! Flash! Rosemary Cowan, a pledge, was selected by the Student body as Homecoming Queen to preside over all Homecoming festivities . Also another pledge, Mary Jane Gallop, was selected as first maid-of-honor.

We are now working on the house decorations for Homecoming and also a luncheon for our alumna:.

Just off the wire! Student elections were held to~ day for the class officers. Six Alphas were elected to office. They are for the freshman class: Shirley Ainsworth, vice-president; Sammy Lou Heaton, secretary;

Theta Theta's first get together after vacation days was held in Miss Kimball's office in the School of Education. We were all glad to greet our alumna: president, Kitty Hale, who also bears the title of National Treasurer. Kitty invited all actives to the "alum" meeting at Mary McCauleys in Winchester, as well as to a barn dance in Lexington, October 25th.

Plans are in order for rushing, and hostesses appointed who will be responsible for the evenings entertainment.

Louise Santosuosso, our delegate to the Chicago Convention, gave us a peppy talk making us all wish that we, too, might have gone and enjoyed ourselves as she did .

Miss Kimball, our adviser, flew to and from Sun Valley. Her experiences as told to us were most entertaining and interesting. Incidentally, Miss Kimball is an expert skater who has promised to teach those of us who would like to learn, and are teachable. Skating to music, with enjoyable partners must be fascinating.

Our next meeting in November will be held at Louise's lovely Chestnut Hill home.

KAPPA KAPPA Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

And all of a sudden the time for reunion meeting arrived . Two months was a long time to be away from the old crowd and the fact was evidenced when the girls finally got together in the house not long ago. One spontaneous embrace was so enthusiastic that it caught an unsuspecting miss right in the glasses and broke them. But such a mishap was laughingly overlooked for everyone wanted to get down to the business of the new time ahead.

Our president, Evie Roos, was bursting with tales of the extraordinary Chicago Convention and had proof of all that she said in a tricky scrapbook composed by the young lady on her return to the east.

It has illustrations, pictures, newspaper clippings, captions, impressions, and definitely a human interest angle-all of which make it a very valuable addition to the fil es of Kappa Kappa.

Another thrill for the group popped up when discussion for fall rushing began. The first party is scheduled to be a goblin and spook arrangement for Hallowe'en. Five girls will be rushed toward a much

anticipated party for which preparations will begin immediately.

Alumni Homecoming plans were next on the list of "must talkabouts." That happens on the week-end of October 17 and 18 and it really affords a big time for both alums and current students. Friday night brings a formal dance at one of the large downtown hotels. Saturday each sorority and fraternity competes in a parade and then in house decorations for monetary awards and cups. Thence to a football game with Penn State. And after that open house prevails all over the campus until Sunday.

Needless to say, everone can hardly wait.

Then, of course, we had to decide how to place the recording machine which we hope to win in this season's Phillip Morris contest. We have been lucky twice in getting a super recorder with radio combined; one for the game room in the cellar of the house and one for the clubroom. Now we want one for the living room and therefore are merrily and scrupulously saving wrappers for entries every week.

It was then announced that news from Mexico had arrived . News that we would be happy to hear for it concerned one of last year's stars at Temple and an ex-president of the sorority chapter. Alvadee Hutton is down there as special representative for Columbia University from which she obtained her master's degree in journalism last year. But, better yet, she is also there on a visit which was made possible by a Pulitzer prize to travel which she was awarded while attending Columbia.

During all our enthusiasm, however, we did not forget the fact that we hope Alpha Sigs everywhere will have just as happy a time as we plan to have.

MU MU Michigan State Normal College, Ypsilanti, Michigan

Dear Alpha Sigs: After a long summer, Mu Mu is here again, and we're really putting our heads together, perhaps knocking them a little to stir up the brain cells.

And why? Well, those of us who were lucky enough to go to Convention came back with such a renewed spirit filled with new ideas, and a broader sense of our sisterhood and fellowship with our other sisters that it has already permeated to those of us who were not able to go. In other words, we are all pepped up to build Mu Mu chapter into a really challenging organization on our campus.

The first thing on our calendar for the year is our formal tea, and we are determined to make it the nicest possible. And then for our informal party how about a real old-fashioned Hallowe'en party?

And informal it shall be with ghosts and goblins and witches and cider and dunking for apples and everything we did at Hallowe'en parties when we were kids-I mean little kids, for we are really going to let down our hair and enter into this party with all our enthusiasm. We arc even going to have a for-

tune teller, and perhaps she will foretell bigger and better things this year and for the years to come for Alpha Sigma Alpha and Mu Mu chapter. Incidentally, our answer this year to those persons who insist on calling Mu Mu's "cats" is: "We may have to start from scratch, but we'll soon be the "eat's meow. " Love in A . S. A., ADELE

NU NU Drexel Institute of Technology, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Here we are again-all getting together for a little chat after a glorious summer vacation. Wasn't it fun? And these stories about Convention-they all seem too good to be true.

But now a little about Nu Nu Chapter. The Alpha Sigs here at Drexel are filling some of the coveted offices as school begins this year. Our own Marion Powell heads the list as President of the Women's Student Government Association. Lee Robinson is treasurer of this organization with Betty Smith, Nancy Gundrum and Anna Lefferts filling places on the Executive Board.

Next, let's take a look at the Senior Class. Here the Alpha Sigs are much in the spot light with Jean Wolfe, president; Betty Shone, treasurer; and Marie Svenson, secretary.

The Women's Athletic Association has as its leader, Bernice Buck with Virginia Hutton as secretary and Flossie Garrett as treasurer-all Alphas.

The girls of Nu Nu Chapter are proud to be closely connected with Y. W. C. A. work and this organization has the following Alpha Sig officers: Anna 路 Lefferts, president; Helen Hutchinson, vice-president; Lee Robinson, secretary, and Mary Lyons, treasurer.

Our dormitory is a home for nearly two hundred girls and here Betty Smith is president, with Ann Kroner, chairman of the Advisory Board and two other Alpha Sigs, Audrey Dugdale and Jean Wolfe on the board. Other organizations such as the Home Economics Club and musical organizations have Alpha Sigma Alpha representatives.

But here are two pieces of super-colossal news!

This year for the first time in fifty years of Drexel history we have a woman as Editor-in-Chief of our year book and who is it? None other than our last year's editor for Nu Nu Chapter, Roberta Wilson.

And just between you and me she's the only one for the job. The second piece of news is important in the professional world for Betty Smith is State Secreta! y for the Pennsylvania Home Economics Association.

At Drexel we have an honor society for all girls.

The Alpha Sigs are well represented here with Jean Allen, vice-president; Ann Kroner, secretary, and Mary Lyons, census-taker. And that's not all-our chapter of Omicron Nu, the home economics national honor society, has Jean Allen as vice-president.

We're proud of all these A. S. A.'s and just know it will be a successful year.

But now we must tell you about some of our past events. Last May just before the close of school the Alpha Sigs had some wonderful times. It began with a Senior Farewell Dinner on May 20 at which time we said "good-bye" to several seniors.

We miss them this year but know that they are happy and doing good work in their new jobs. Then May 29 and a beautiful night-the Alpha Sigs gathered for a Farewell Formal Dance. For a perfect climax, Memorial Day week-end was spent at the shore.

There's no place like the shore for a good time and a good sunburn-but a wonderful time was had by all.

The one thing that added a sad note to our parties was the thought than in June we would lose our "Mommie" Macintyre as sponsor and also registrar at Drexel Tech. To her we owe much as individuals and as a sorority. But we are glad to know that she is still near us here in Philadelphia and we'll see her from time to time.

This fall we are having a new sponsor and are happy to welcome Miss Amanda Ebersole, Associate Professor of Home Economics and Head of the Division of Home Economics Education at Drexel 路 in this capacity. We are looking forward to our future work with her.

As these wonderful fall week-ends come along we think of hikes in the country, so on October II-I2 we Alphas are spending the week-end at our Lodge.

Here we will do that hiking as well as see all the convention snapshots and hear all the convention news: On November 22 we're having our Annual Harvest Moon Dance. But you'll hear all about that next time. So long for awhile!

The Alpha Sigs out here in California returned to find a decreased membership but not a decrease in spmt. Marian Lee Jones, Lois Downey, and Jane Jackson have been talking Convention so much, that the whole chapter feels they know everything that went on there. Both Marian Lee and Lois kept a detailed diary, and scrapbook of Convention and their extended vacation in the east. They both returned home September 7, after visiting Denver, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. It was a great thrill to go through the Royal Gorge in Colorado, and listen to the organ in the Mormon Tabernacle, and go swimming and " floating" in Salt Lake. And then to top it off was a moonlight ride on the Ferry over San Francisco Bay, underneath that beautiful Bay Bridge, and an ali-day ride down the coast of California from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

We have been spend ing the last two weeks rushing, with Teas, and a Bunco Party, and a Mock Cocktail Party, and a big Dinner. We have a new

Faculty Sponsor, Miss Hazel J. Cubberly, Associate in Physical Education. We are very. proud of her.

The Dean of Women, Helen Laughlin, an Alpha Sig, has invited us over to her home and we are looking forward to it a great deal.

So many girls left this year, Edna "Squeeky" Calvert, our vice-president, went to our staunch rival school, the University of Southern California. We elected Edythe Callahan to take her place. Then Jane Jackson found employment better than school, and w.e elected Jeanne Green, a plenty attractive sophomore, to fill her place as Secretary. Gerry Goecke also decided to leave school-the interest in the Air Corps took too much of her time. Elaine Cole, our "gorjus" red-head is now Chaplain, and finally there is practice-teacher-senior-Betty Credelle who is Chapter Editor.

Julie Bessire, a super model pledge, will be initiated next week with our Adviser, Miss Cubberly.

The biggest thing on our Social Calendar now is the big Homecoming Parade on October 31. For the first time, Xi Xi chapter is going to enter a float. We surely have our fingers crossed. It's a tremendous parade, usually about seventy-five floats, and all the bands in the city, and a "Queen" and cars and cars full of Movie Stars . . . and then after the Parade a big Bonfire about 200 feet high, and a Street Dance. It really will be a big night.

PI PI Buffalo State Teachers College, Buffalo, New York

As college reopens, Pi Pi chapter is getting off to another good start for what we hope will prove a successful year of activities and fel lowship both locally and nationally.

College registration was held September the 15th, and Pi Pi started its activities fo r the year with a cabinet meeting called by our President, Carol Frazee. Carol has come back full of inspiration from Convention and her enthusiasm has indeed carried over to us who were unable to attend.

During cabinet meeting we planned our program for the year which includes initiation for our fifteen pledges in October. We also set up committee chairmen fo r our Panhellenic tea, Informal and Formal Rush, Magazine Subscription Drive, Founders' Day Banquet, and for Inspection Banquet.

I know I speak fo r all of us when I say Pi Pi is looking forward with a great deal of pleasure to Inspection. It will mean one more closer tie to our National Councilors.

Initiation was held last week and one of our Pi Pi's who grad uated last year and is teaching near Albany was back (Ruth Albright). She and all the others who graduated last June are having a reunion

this week-end at the home of Kay Brant. Kay lives near Syracuse so the girls are coming from all over the state for their houseparty. I know they will have a wonderful time.

Our new members were thrilled with their initiation and we are so happy to have them really in.

The service seemed particularly lovely that night. On Saturday, October 4, we held a tea for them at sorority house and everyone had a good time.

At meeting last Thursday, October 2nd, we began making up our informal rush lists and getting ideas for the theme of the informal party. Our chairmen are all appointed for coming activities so many plans are under way.

Our A. S. A. trio sang a medley of songs, Joan Adams played a violin solo, and our Sweetheart Song was sung by Dick Bonar.

After a lovely dinner, everyone joined hands and sang "Zeal Afire.

Rho Rho Chapter has just completed a very successful rush week . Our traditional Rose Tea, which was attended by many prospective pledges, was the first in a series of three rush parties. Our second entertainment was an informal game party at the home of Mrs. Flint, our patroness. Games, ranging from Chinese checkers to bridge, were played throughout the afternoon. A very lovely formal dinner brought the rush season to a close, and our new girls were pledged at an impressive ceremony which was held in the First Methodist Church, October 1 3路 1 941.

We are looking forward to a very busy year filled with many social and educational activities.

Already, we have made arrangements to support a little Chinese refugee for a year. Also, each Alpha Sig is taking an active part in the national defense work which is being organized on the campus. We have enrolled in various classes which include knitting, auto-mechanics, radio telegraphy, first aid, and communal cooking. In this way, we are striving to do our bit for Uncle Sam. Yours in A. S. Rush Week With a tea Sunday, September q, at our Chapter house, Rush Week officially opened.

Our first party was a Pig party. We took our rushees on a picnic with a scavenger hunt afterwards.

The group gathered at the Chapter house afterwards where the winners of the hunt were awarded A . S. A. piggie banks.

On Wednesday evening at the home of a patroness, Mrs. Motz, we entertained with a garden party.

Our formal progressive dinner was Thursday with cocktails at the home of our sponsor, Miss Eleanor Murray, dinner at the Lamer and our A . S. A. dessert at the home of _Mrs. Markwell, a patroness.

Rush Week was climaxed Friday when thirteen very lovely girls became A. S. A. pledges.

GERALDINE HoPLEY. Local convention, an annual event, brought twenty-five alumn:e and active members of our chapter back to their Alma Mater on July 26. The day was spent at registration, a luncheon, and meetings. In the evening, a dance was held for all members of Greek organizations. All sororities and fraternities on F. H. K. S. campus held their conventions the same week-end. A special guest this year was Sister M~rj.orie Hope, a ~ember of Tau Tau, who is doing m1sswnary work m Glendale, Ohio. Plans for the coming year were made and many old acquaintances were renewed.

One wee~ later, I .was on my way to Chicago for one of the b1.ggest thnlls of my life-a national Alpha S1g Co~ventwn!. We spent one glorious week going to meetmgs, havmg wonderful meals, dancing on the Beach Walk, and meeting people from all over the United States. Horace Heidt's orchestra and the hundred soldiers from Fort Sheridan also helped to make it something I will never forget. I wish every member of Tau Tau could have been there.

PHI PHI Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville, Missouri

Phi Phi chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha held four progressive informal rush parties September 22. We ~~d a . ~ru~. store, a pet shop, a sport shop and a plly JOint.

Favors were given the girls at each party.

We closed our rush season with a formal rush party at the Maryville Country Club. Invitations were passports to the "Hell's a Poppin'" night club in Burma. Introductions were made by Mary Margot Phares, president, who was dressed in a Chinese costume. The club room was decorated in the Chinese th~me. Lanterns were strung across the ceiling and stnps of colored paper with Chinese writing and pagodas decorated the walls. The mantle was decorated with cymbals and pagodas and above the doorway leading to the porch was a sign "Air Raid Shelter." . The dance programs were fastened to loaded cap pistols. The first dance was Alpha Sigma Alpha promenade and guests were given Chinese caps with queues. During the evening there . was a blackout and everyone rushed for the "Air Raid Shelter" where they viewed the fireworks display on the lawn.

Sorority songs were sung and the final number was a sparkle dance, when each guest was given a lighted sparkler. Favors of brass bells, ash trays and vases were given the guests. Chow mein, tea and fancy cookies were served in the dining room. The low tables were decorated with red Chinese letters printed on the white table covering and place cards were miniature parasols in candy gum drops. Chop sticks, wooden bowls and Chinese figures were favors.

Guests were seated at the tables on large white cushions decorated with red dragons.

An informal party was given our pledges September 27 in our chapter room. The pledges learned the sorority songs.

On October ro Phi Phi chapter held a Founders' Day luncheon celebrating our fortieth anniversary.

Our chapter was very proud to have our delegate to the convention, Mary Frances Todd, chosen queen of the convention.

CHI CHI Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, Indiana

Hello, Sorority Sisters everywhere! Here we are back at school, resolved to make this year Chi Chi's biggest and best year. We're just beginning to settle

53 down into regular routine now that rush week with its thrills, is over. ' At our first meeting of the year, Angeline Yovich, our delegate to the Chicago convention, gave a resume of her wonderful trip. Her descriptions made us all have a part in convention and acted as inspiration to us. How we enjoyed all the clever little place cards and favors she brought home to us!

Rush week-end was one grand whirl! Activities took place on September 19th and 2oth. All arrangements were in the hands of our co-rush captains, Libbie Lee and Millie Warner. Each party was well-planned in detail and was carried out without mishap.

We launched our gala affairs with an informal "rough-it" party at which the quantity and quality of the food left nothing to be desired. The rushees were taken by bus to a local park. Our theme was "Southern Barbecue" and genuine barbecued pork was served steaming hot. After supper, we held a big song fest around a cheery camp fire. It was an excelent opportunity to get acquainted with our rushees informally.

Our next party was on Saturday when we entertained at a beautifully appointed buffet luncheon which we called "The Hunt." Saddles, and large bouquets of goldenrod were arranged about the dining room and the place cards were small silhouettes of horses' heads bearing the names. Lovely corsages in fall colors were arranged as centerpieces for the individual tables until their presentation to the guests.

Delicious little chicken pies were served with hot baked potatoes, hot rolls and butter. At each table were seated two actives and two guests.

On Saturday evening, the alumn~ members of Chi Chi chapters of Indianapolis and Muncie gave us our formal dinner as a climax to rush activities.

Many members of both alumn~ chapters were present and we were pleased to have Mrs. Genevieve Leib as a guest.

"Pan American Comida" was chosen as the theme for the dinner, "comida" being the Spanish word for "dinner." Lacking facilities for a real trip to South America, the ballroom of the Hotel Roberts served the purpose admirably. The dinner tables were arranged in the form of a large "A" and decorations carried out the Spanish theme. Rushees received little La Conga lapel pins as favors and place cards were small colored maps of South America bearing the guest's name. Crepe paper palm trees and cleverly dressed Spanish dolls were placed on larger maps of South America at intervals along the tables. Mary Ellen Cornwell, one of last year's graduates, was largely responsible for the plans of decoration. A large map of South America from which radiated rich, colorful stripes formed a striking background for the small table at the top of the "A." A radio quiz programme was conducted by members of the Indianapolis chapter following the dinner.

Each rushee participated and received a prize. All questions pertained to South America, as did the

54 prizes. The informal type of entertainment made the rushees feel "at home" and they seemed to enjoy it immensely.

An appropriate close to the evening was the La Conga line in which everyone took part.

As a result of these exciting activities, ten lovely girls were pledged Tuesday evening, September 3oth, at candlelight service. Our loss last year via the "cap and gown exit" left several empty places which we know will be royally filled by these ten new girls.

We are looking forward to Homecoming on, our campus. We're planning to enter a Boat in the annual parade and then there's the big banquet where we'll be able to renew acquaintances with all our alumn<e. 路 We're making extensive plans for Founders' Day this year, as it marks an important birthday of Alpha Sig. Speaking of Founders' Day reminds me to tell you that one of our most prized possessions is the autograph of Louise Cox Carper, one of A . S. A.'s founders. Our adviser, Mrs. L. H. Whitcraft, brought it back from Chicago this summer, and we value it very highly.

I believe this about completes our news thus far.

These first three weeks have been very busy ones, but also very happy ones. Chi Chi chapter sends a chorus of "Good luck!" to her sister chapters as we begin another grand Alpha Sig year.

PSI PSI Louisiana State Normal College, Natchitoches, Louisiana

Frankly, you all, this letter is apt to be rather haphazard because we are not only in the middle of the first week of school, but rush week as well. Due to the maneuvers which blocked the highways, Normal did not open until October second . Consequently, we can't rave over our new pledges-only ask you to wish us luck with the darling bunch of girls we are rushing.

On October fifth, the Psi Psi 's gave an informal rush party which was a Southern progressive dinner -complete with mint juleps and southern fried chicken. The dessert was served at the sorority house, after which we sang songs and told about the marvelous time we had at convention.

If I sound rather sleepy it's only because of the marvelous time I had last night at our formal rush party. A Robin Hood theme was carried out most effectively, complete with an assortment of Maid Marions, Friar Tucks, Little Johns, Robin Hoods, and what have you. The large social hall was decorated as Sherwood forest and a big pig roasted on a spit in one corner. Dancing, games, songs and plenty of good animated conversation all added to the success of the evening.

Incidentally, even though we have been so busy rushing, we've found time to really do over our sorority house. Grace Himel, our grand new patroness, is helping us with the interior while a colored man is

doing wonders to the outside with a brush and a can of paint.

We wish all of the girls we met at convention would write to us-letters just seem to bring people closer together. Also, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you-North, East, and West-who were so perfectly grand to us at convention.

BETA GAMMA Northeastern State Teachers College, Tahlequah, Oklahoma

Being All-American Girls was Beta Gamma's motif for our formal rush party. It was in the form of a dinner at the Thompson Hotel. We patriotically donned our hats of red, white and blue, while our toast mistress, Treva Davidson, kept the party very much alive. During the dinner the group sang the favorite Alpha Sig songs to our little rushees.

Games were played and there was dancing later in the evening. Now that rush season is over we are happy in the fact that we have eight lovely new pledges.

Alpha Sigs have started off with a bang in this year's activities. Our own Vera Jamison is president of the girls' dormitory, while Treva Davidson again is ahead with honors-as vice-president of Delta Psi Omega, the dramatics fraternity, and on the staff of the Tsa La Gi, the Northeastern yearbook.

During the summer Elizabeth Evans changed her name to Mrs. Joe Radford and Philena Morris is still beaming over the fraternity pin she received this summer.

We were sorry to lose two of our girls to other schools-Maxine Kelly left us for the University of Missouri, where she pledged Alpha Chi Omega and Louise Marlin pledged Kappa Delta at Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College.

After much laughter, gaiety and noise, all the Alpha Sigs finally settled down to a few hours sleep at the slumber party that Mrs. Guenther, one of our gracious patronesses gave for us at her home one Friday night. We had all day Saturday to recuperate and on Sunday morning we attended the Baptist Church in a body.

Three of the Beta Gammas were fortunate enough to attend the convention at Chicago. Our lovely president, Mary Lee Hill, was our delegate, Ada Jo Schenandoah was initiated while there, and yours truly was also lucky enough to attend.

We are very proud and glad to say that all of our officers are back at school and most of our members.

Statia McNeese and Eva Meador, our delegates to convention, really had a perfectly wonderful time. They brought back with them information that is really improving Beta Delta. We hope the next convention will be down here in the South.

Hi, Alpha Sigs: It's great to be back at school after a summer of swimming, 'n boating 'n dating, don't you think?

There's only one hitch to it all-the girls who didn't come back.

Christmas bells won't be all that's ringing this December. Frankie Drewrey is marrying and three of our Alpha Sig girls are going down to be her bridesmaids. Congratulations, Frankie!

Talk about being happy! I'll say we are. For now we have a sorority house just like so many of you do and find that the joys haven't been overrated one inch. Ours has seven bedrooms, a large living room, and three baths. Right now we are having the time of our lives buying furniture and trying to make the drapes before rush season.

Already we have had several social meetings in our living room. Last Monday night, Mary Burger, our president, and Miss Boje, our sponsor, told us all about the convention. They were bubbling over with excitement, new ideas, good times they had, and all the grand girls they met. It made everyone of us declare that if there was any possible way we'd get to the next convention!

Harrisonburg is having its fourth Turkey Festival the week of October ro. Three of our members, Nancy Peters, Dickie Stull, and Libbie Lee Deter are representing their counties. So if the next time you go to the movies you see a Fox Movietone and a group of girls amongst a flock of turkeys, just pick out the three cutest girls and you'll know they're Alpha Sigs.

Lib Neale and Naomi McAllen have just been elected officers of Bluestone Cotillion Club. Looks like we'll be in the front of the. figure this year.

Hail, hail the gang's all here! And we've oiled our joints, brushed away the cobwebs from our mind, and settled down to another year of hard work for Alpha Sig. Our first meeting was one of great importance to us all, as the discussion was divided between the furnishings for our new sorority room and the rush week program. All ideas were carefully weighed and jotted down.

Our just acquired room is on the ground floor of Junior Hall-the largest dormitory on the campus.

At present, the floor space is divided between four straight chairs and a piano, which our own Miss Keep so kindly donated to us. During meetings we resemble an Indian council, sitting in a large circle on the floor. When we do get our furniture, which we hope will be soon, we will send you a picture of the Alpha Sigma Alpha room.

"Gena" Fields made a large chart as a guide for our informal rush week. Each Alpha Sig's name is listed down the left hand side, followed by squares which represent each day of the week. In these squares are the names of the rushees which are to be rushed on that day by an Alpha Sig. Some system!

If our aims remain as high as our spirits this should be a most successful and a very happy year for Beta Zeta chapter.

Hello, Big Sisters! Your baby sisters way out in North Dakota are reporting a little news of our activities thus far this year. We're all very 路 much pleased over our six grand pledges. We expect to have a much larger number of pledges during the winter quarter when the freshmen girls will be eligible.

In a very, very close election with two Beta E.ta's, Mary Jane Alguire and Evelyn Morland, to pick from, the student body's decision went to Evy for Homecoming Princess. Incidentally, our first president, Mary Meulemans, was the '40 Princess.

We've already sponsored an all-school dance, and are busy with plans for pledging, a Homecoming get-together luncheon, initiation, and a Founders' Day banquet. The mother patroness degree will be c.o nferred upon our patronesses, Mrs. Bowen and Mrs. Scott, at the banquet.
