OKLAHOMA Rush season began the fourth week of sch ool and lasted t v:o At the Panhellenic Meeting it was decided that each sororit . s~ould give only one big rush party, but as many sma.ll affairs as it mJ.ght choose , Delta Sigma EpsilDn went at it wholesale, having something every afternoon and evening, .except on the ni ghts when the other P gave their formal parties . Tri Sigma started out in the same way, but c~lled a ha.lt after the third day . Pi Kappa Sigma, lilce ourselves , waited a few days before it did anything at all. At no time did it attempt anything elaborate . We had planned a series of very informal parties a t the hora es of several of our members. The se sinple gettogethers afforded us an opportunity to meet and become acquainted with the 8Uests, as would not otherwi3e have been possible. We also gave a weenie ro a st in Young's Canyon; vh ich is a short distance from the campus. Bit by bit we eliminated the less <lesirable girls and c ~ t down our list .· so that at th~ formal party, given at the home of Louise Miller, we were perfectly sure as to just ~he ones that we desired . The house was charmingly decorated with red an·d white flowe rs and ferns and every one precent seemed to r~ally enjoy every moment of the eveninr;. The result of our rushing brought us four acceptances at once, and two procyises, if the consent of the patents could oe secured . The sorority idea is realtivelY,. new here at the school, so people aro not who lly familiar with it at present. Time wi ll change all th~t t, howe ver . The Pi Kappas, the oldest bunch on the campus , got three students and three fo.cul ty members . Delta Si ~ma :ep silon had acceptances from thr ee r students and one faculty membe r . Tri Sigma got five new members , Altogether we are feeling prettJr well satisfied with the results of our efforts . Outside the ·affairs connected with the rus hing season] t1e most deli ghtfu l event ViaS the celebrat io n of Founders' Day. ·;.rh en the idea of keepin the day was first brought up, we decided to gi ve a di~ ne r pv.rty at on e of the big. hotels, but we had not counted on th e unexpe cted opening of a nev.f oil well, and when the night a r r i ved t h ere were such c rowds at the hotels that ' we had to change our pl a ns hurriedly . We finally ~ecur e d the Rest Rooms of the Ferated Clubs and had s ome c a te rer s furnish the three colr se r.1 enu , The ban.C!_uet l~oorn was decorc. ted in ye llovr :J.n d white 1 and the flo.-,rer us e d was the ye llorr chrysant~1e rJurn. back, but practically all the girls of l a st year were here . The mosr excitine; thing after the Meet was the football game with.Kingfisher, the score being 55 to 0 in our favor. We prefaced the game with a 'pep' meeting at the Sl:mol, followed by a big . b07;1i'ire dmm town. Quite a fw~ of our alumnae· were baclt for this, and it was -their first home coming to witness a. e;ame, for the othe.r s have always fallen on ·Friday, and the school m~'ams could not get away from their duties for· them. Just · a -few ' days later came the second of our L-yceum Course .. . · It was Jane Dunaway in " Daddy Long Legs "-. It was a most enjo-'y able occasion. Then the very next evening came the cantata, in which we ha. e all been so very much interested , Last year, as has been our custom for some time, each sorority gave somG sort of ente~tainme_nt f _ o r the -purpose of traininG its members, and incident·a llY · ·r illin·· the coffers· of the treasurer. These affairs were usu- . · ally · piays . . .OUr new President,Dr. Graves, has changed this custom qui_te a good ·d~al . He thought that as the fraternal organizations · ~ltiplied that the townspeople would be find it rather trying to be asked to buy · tickets for eac ~' ~succoeding affair, so he suggested that all the sororities unite in one effort, the proceeds to be evenly divided . The oantata was the "Feast Qf tho Little Lanterns" and proved a great success, both artistically and. financ·ially . Th.e girls were trained by Miss Pyl-e, Faculty Advisor of Tri Sigma . We oold the largest number of tickets, as the returns showed, and of that record we were quite proud. Each sorority will not about $30 . Athletics seems to be proving very popul~r here, especiallt among the boys . A tour has nlready been arranged for the basket ball · team that will take it to SanFrancisco and Seattle, and tho schedule shows many games on route . 7he School will got a good deal of advertising out of the trip too . · The weather is supposed to be a tabooed subject, but ours is such a varied onG that vto aro sure tho. you would be interested in it. Chapter Adit would seem better not to mention names, as there might posaibly be an. element of guess work in t11e a ccount. THE ART CO!UHTTEE

The Art Committce 1 which is composed of two members of the Graduate Club of Kirksville 7 Mrs. Paul · Dysart Higbee and Mr s Ha rr~T Allen, has sent out some l~vely suggestions for the two celebratioha7 King Asa Day ·in November and the Christmas gathering . For the former the menu covers were in the form of a crowned head of King Asa, while the place cards were decorated with the Phoenix . -The Christmas suggestions were unusually attractive. There were little cards decorated with Christmas tre s and be~ls 7 that could be used on gift ~ackages, and there were also very pretty stickere, square, outl ined in red, bearing the Star and the Pheonix togetl1er wi th the Sorority l etters . Along with this went the suggestion that green r ib~on should be used lim tying the packages. The r e v,rere t vm styl es of place cards, one a blazing Star against a most attractive setting o~ bed and green , the other· ornamented with a candelabra. holddmg four cand1es ·. Above were the Sorority letters and below e. jolly KrisKringle face . The Sororit~r is particularly fortunate in h e..vine; such ability at its . disposal . ELVA DOYLE REED Died

Dec.~,

'

1916

It is with hear ts' crushed beneath a heavy loa d of aorrow that we record the death of our beloved National Secretary, Elva Doyle Reed . No sorority ever possessed a more lovable member, a more devoted worl>:er, a more efficient Ha,tional Officer.

From the moment of her initiation at tho Miami Convention, to which slle. went as the delegate from Kirksville, to the day of her deat.h , Alpha Sigma Alpha was to her almost a reli gi on . Alpha Sigma Alpha ovres to Elva Doyle Reed a deep debt of gra titude . So long as the Sorori ty shall stand, it will be a mo~ument to her de voti on, to her belief ip its destiny as an educative force / to her faith in its ultimate and abundant success . Our hearts go out in the deepe s t s ympathy to the sorrowing parents, to the brok en-hearted husband. Our lov e '.'lould eP..fold mos'!:. tenderly the 1ittle ~on thet nev er looked on the sweet f ace of his mother.
