Golfer ... organist ... pianist ... volunteer . .. gardener .. . travel e r ... bank exec utive .. . stock broker. Will the real Rose Marie Fellin please stand up? We will discover the real Rose Marie Fellin is standing; she stands in a variety of circles and contributes something to each. After 27 years of continuous service to Alpha Sigma Alpha on the national level, Rosie has retired as headquarters executive, a position she held from 1967 until August 1991. Rosie will continue to serve in a consultant capacity to ALA's new headquarters exec utive, Lisa Tait. Judy Winter, past Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation trustee, offered he r thoughts, " Rosi e, yo u know more about Alpha Sigma Alpha than any other member alive! You and our beloved Wilma Wilson Sharp were made from the same mold . Had it not been for your devotion, Alpha Sigma Alpha would definitely not be where it is today." As headquarters executive, Rosie faced th e challe nges of " meeting deadlin es and keeping everyone motivated and happy." In this rol e she was instrumental in overseei ng the de elopment of chapter consultants through training, consulting or a support role. As the chapter con4 WINTER 1992

sultants who train at headquarters during the summer know, there was no rest when Rosie was around. Though they worked hard, Rosie made the most of any leisure time and often took the consultants on sightseeing tours , shopping trips, swimming or trips to her farm in Marshfield to give them a break from their work schedules. Credit also goes to Rosie for her contribution to development of the leadership procedure notebooks, incorporated into e very chapter today.

History with AEA Rosi e's introduction to Alpha Sigma Alpha began in the fall of 194 7, when she was a member of the first pledge class of the Beta Sigma Chapter at Southwest Missouri State University. When the chapte r was installed , she was elected treasurer. Three years later, she became advisor to the Beta Sigma Chapter, a position she fill ed for 14 years. In 1958, a non-profit house corporation was formed with Rosi e serving as treasurer, and the chapter purchased a house. The Beta Sigma Chapter was represented for the first time on Nation al Council when Rosi e was elected national treasurer in 1964. Her first assignment was to set up a

double entry set of books, and she later separated the funds and set up complete sets of double entry books for each fund. Later, she also completed the task of formatting and entering the books on a personal computer at national headquarters. Due to her responsibilities as national treasurer, she resigned as the Beta Sigma advisor and formed an advisory board, of which she was one of five members, serving as chapter and finance advisor. At that time, the Beta Sigma Chapter established the Rose Marie Fellin Ideal Pledge Award in recognition of her many years of service as chapter advisor. ALA went through a significant change in 1964 when Central Office (headquarters) was relocated from Kenmore, NY, to Springfield, MO. Juanita Robert Rowe, Beta Sigma, served as the central office executive and Rosie, as treasurer, was designated as the officer in charge. Describing Rosie as a "little dynamo," Juanita said, "She can get more done and get more from other people than anyone I've ever seen. She has always had boundless energy. I think what impresses me most is the fact that she never wastes time. It is impossible to say 'no ' when Rosie asks for your help. " THE PHOENIX OF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA

Also in 1964, Rosie was elected as president of the Beta Sigma House Corporation , and Marilyn Garbee was elected to a five-year term as a director of the house corporation. Marilyn served on the Be ta Sigma Housing Corporation board with Rosie for 10 years. She concurred with Juanita's appraisal, "She is hardworking, enthusiastic and possesses the enterprise and drive to accomplish things. Leading an active, almost vigorous lifestyle, she also has an energetic mind, full of ideas. Even after hours of work her ,~nergy never seems to giv~ out. In 1966, ALA purchase d the 1201 E. Walnut residence as anational headquarters. Rosie was instrumental in preparing the house for its dedication in 1969. She was mistress of ceremonies at that celebration of which the highlight was the unveiling of the Wilma Wilson Sharp portrait, which has hung at headquarters since then. Rosie was appointed by national council as headquarters executive at the 1967 national convention, and Juanita Rowe, immediate past headquarte rs executive, assumed Rosie's immediate past position as national treasurer. Not letting her interest as treasurer get too far out of reach, Rosie was elected at the 1969 National Panhellenic Conference meeting in Miami to serve as secretary-treasurer of the Central Office Executives for the 1969-7 1 term. At the 1991 NPC meeting, Rosie was honored with a special r e tire me nt breakfast. Rosie's convention career began in 1970 when she assumed convention coordinator duties from Helen Corey, who had bee n convention chairman for 11 conventions. Rosie has served as convention coordinator for 10 conventions. She rated the 1982 Chicago convention as the best because ALA had reign of the complete hotel. How ever , Rosie sited the Clearwater convention as the most me morable, for her niece, Annette Fellin, was initiated into ALA as an honor initiate. Rosie would probably like to forget the convention at which she and her chair fell off the highriser during a business meeting. prised when she tried to return to her chair, soon to find both of the m on the floor. Assuming the convention coordinator position from H elen held a special meaning when at the 1982 national convention in Chicago, Rosie received the first Helen L. Corey Convention Award . Rosi e also r eceive d a special honor from the Beta Sigma Chapter in 1987 . As part of the Beta Sigma 40 th anniversary celeb ration , a scholarship fund was es tabli shed within th e A:LA Foundation to award an annual scholarship to the chapter treasurer and president in honor of th e thr ee Be ta Si g ma Chapter members that served as both chapter and nation al treasurer: Rosie Fellin , Juanita Rowe and Marilyn Garbee.

Professional career As ass istant vice pres ide nt at Boatmen's Bank in Springfield, MO, Rosie has made considerabl e strides from her first po sition as bookkeeper 42 years ago. She began her career in a rather unassuming manner. Unable to find e mployment elsewhere, she accepted a position at Boatmen's (th en Union National Bank) with inte ntions it would be temporary. However, her interests were aroused and she headed from bookkeep er to tell e r to ove r 15 years as a secretary to beco me the first woman officer in operations. She is head of the in vestment departm e nt and responsible for ines ting th e cash r ese rves and in vestm ent secu riti es portfolio of

th e bank as well as handling the purchase and sale of Federal Reserve funds , negotiable certificates of deposit and Treasury bills, notes and bonds for customers. " Bank in g is a very inte res ting fi eld and has a lot of opportunities for women . .. for the woman today willing to get a master's degree in business administration , th ere are management opportunities." In 1980, Rosie was selected by Mel Carnahan , Missouri Stat e Treasurer, to serve on the state investment advisory committee, a position in wh ich she received and made recommendations for investments for the State of Missouri . A prestigious position , Rosie modestly said it was " r eally an honor to receive." Always challenged to learn new things, Rosie " hit th e books" again and passed the Series 7 test in 1986 to become a r eg ist e r e d stock broker.

Volunteer To volunteer is to give of one's time freely. A large part of Rosie's life has been devoted to service as a volunteer. Support of the American Cancer Society has been high on Rosie's priority list. She served as treasurer for the Greene County division of the American Cancer Society for 20 years (since 1971); served as chairman of the Tourname nt for Life Charity Classic and the Cancer Golf Tournamen t for six years, raising over $165,000 for cancer; served as chairman of the Missouri State Cancer Golf Committee; and was recently r e cognized b y th e State Cancer Organi zation for her leadership in the golf tournaments. Her interests in organizations are wide and varied . H er participation includes serving on or being a member of the following groups: • St. Agn es Parish Council • YWCA Board • Women ' s Di v ision of th e Springfield Chamber of Commerce • National Association of Bank Women • Ozarks National Council on Alco holi sm and Drug D ep e nde nce Board • Eucharistic Minister at Mercy Villa • Hi cko ry Hills Country Club Board • St. John ' s Hospital Auxiliary (weekly vo lunteer at information desk) • Unic Investment Club THE PHOENIX OF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA

Contributions Rosie has made many contributions to Alpha Sigma Alpha, but a very significant one is offering her financial expertise in managing and investing sorority funds. National Presiden t Diane James confirms that " Ro sie h as most definite ly helped shape the sorority by bringing it to such sound financial stability. " Th e net worth of Al:A has increased many times over as a result of her guidance and conservative counsel. Rosie points out that one of the most enjoyable challenges was to be part of a team that enjoyed improving the financial base of the sorority. " By operating with income during the current year and putting in reserve the excess income over expense, coupled with the extreme high interest rates in the last few years, we have been able to in-

crease our assets at a rapid pace," Rosie said . "One of our best investments was the purchase of our National Headquarters building in 1966. Along with the purchase of the property adjacen t on th e north , D e nton Place, we have a nice exposure to the public. This has resulted in low cost housing for our central office, a hom e for chapter consultan ts in train ing, province director training workshops , long range plann ing committee meetings , national council meetings as well as other committee meetings." Under Rosie's guidance, fund balances have increased as shown in table above.

Up close and personal " Anyone can run a business in good times, but it takes a business person with a good head to survive in bad tim es," Rosie said. " I was well trained by my father , Peo, in the grocery store in Marshfield. The family was good in math and added grocery bills in our heads , for we were without an adding machine. I had training in organization and fundrais ing by the church ice cream socials in which th e Fellin fam il y played a big part. We were always encouraged to do the b est we co uld at what we were doing and improve anything we could . I have carried this philosophy over to my work with Alpha Sigma Alpha." When asked about her personal life, Rosie related this story, "At the SMSU 40 th Reunion luncheon, I said I went to college to take all the accounting and secretarial courses I could, work a few years , get married and have a dozen kids. But God didn 't have that in the plan. Judge Don Burrell, master of ceremonies, said I may not have had any children but I had many, many elderly people that I had adopted as my children who were customers of the bank and who I helped through many trying times. I have always loved children and there were al-

ways lots of cousins hanging around for my attention. " I am thankful for a supportive family because without their support I could not have done all the things I have. I am also grateful that God gave me the opportunity to care for my three aunts and my father until their deaths and now to have my mother, Millie, 95, in my home with me since 1980." Rosie has a brother and a sister, both who have earned doctorate degrees. Her brother, Phil, has retired as the dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan. He and his wife have five children. Her sister, JoAnn , a Bene·dictin e sister, is th e head of th e math department at Be nedictin e College in Atchison, KS.

Farewell, but not good-by There is no doubt tnat Rosie will be missed. Diane James stated, 'Til miss her knowledge of the sorority and willingness to share that knowledge. However, we are fortunate that knowledge will be used in a consultan t capacity. Even though Rosie is retiring as headquarters executive, she is not retiring from the sorority." Similar words of praise came from Dee Dee Frances, form er national officer, " You have been so much a part of Alpha Sigma Alpha for so many years and given many hours of unsung service. You have been a real inspiration and will be missed at the helm of headquarters." When Rosie was asked what her role would be after " retirement," she simply stated she will "continue to follow the creed of Alpha Sigma Alpha: to li ve each day to its ultimate good." "I have given my best to Alpha Sigma Alpha on the national level for 27 years, " she said. " And I now look forward to the accomplish ments of my successors. Happiness is an Alpha Sig!"

Leadership Institutes

Collegians 'share the vision' at seminars by Kim Meyer Vice President of Program

"WASA TV is on the air! Share the vision!" These words opened each of the three Emma Frost Leadership Development Institutes held last summer. Collegians from across the nation had an opportunity to attend one of th ese weekend seminars to learn and practice leadership skills. The institutes began when Emma Coleman Frost, Pi Pi made a very generous donation to the sorority to be used for leadership education. The basic concept was developed by Paula Foreman and the national council when she was vice president of program in 1986 . Elaine Fuerst continued the work as the next vice president of program in 1988, and the pilot program was held at Pennsylvania State University in October 1989. ALA will continue to offer several institutes each biennium, on alternate years from the national convention. Th e goal is to pro vide ALA women with self-knowledge and leadership skills that will not only enhance their sorority leadership , but their participation in other campus organizations and in their careers after graduation. Last summer, for the first time, three institutes were held in different parts of the country so collegians from every Alpha Sigma Alpha chapter could attend. The first was held in July in Springfield at Southwest Missouri State University, the home of Beta Sigma Chapter. The University of Delaware in Newark was the site for the second institute in August. Women from Delta Iota Chapter were th e hostesses there. And the last institute was in late August at Indiana University, Bloomington , the home of one of our newest chapters, Epsilon Phi . At each of these universities, participants stayed in residence halls, ate the ir meals in dining halls and used classroom and meeting space on the campus. 14

WINTER 1992

The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation assisted the members of the Beta Beta Chapter at the University of Northern Colorado with transportation costs to the Emma Frost Leadership Development Institute in Springfield, MO. They are, from left, Cindy Meisinger, Jody Brothers (chapter advisor). Karen Bishop, Tracy VaJentic, Elizabeth Humphrey and Kim Ponis.

These varied locations and times provided an institute within driving distance for all collegiate chapters except two. With the help of funds from the ALA Foundation, women from Beta Beta Chapter in Colorado and Delta Upsilon Chapter in Texas were able to travel by air. This assistance from the foundation enabled these women to feel part of a national sorority despite their geographic distanc e from other chapters. The preside nt, vice presiden t, mem be rship director, treas urer , rush chairman and standards board chairman from each chapter were invited to attend. Chapter advisors were also asked to come. If any of these women were un able to atte nd , alternates were chosen in their place. The national sorority paid for half th e cos ts for each woman. A team of national officers presented the workshops at each LDI. These women generously offered their tim e and tale nts to prepare and lead a variety of workshops. The following women helped at one (or more) of the institutes this summer: Marti Stratton, Suzanne Kilgannon , Cindy Fundis , Maria

Malayter, Vicki H e rsch , Andrea Tuni a, Lori Scott , Trish Cop e, Cindy Christfield, Tracy Neff and Deb Dietrich. Many other national officers attended and helped " on the side lines." The same workshops were presented at each institute on " WASA TV." "Catch the Vision" was the overall th eme. The Friday afternoon registration was followed by non-stop workshops and fellowship. After a full day on Saturday, each institute ended Sunday morning, after an evaluation session. The workshops included sessions on sorority ritual and how values and ethnics affect decision-making. Other sessions evaluated the personalities of participants and presented information on goal-setting and decision making. How to delegate and understanding leadership styles were the topics of two sessions. Also subjects of sessions during the workshops were how to build sisterhood, communica tion s, conflict resolution and fundraising . At the end of the goalsetting session, every chapter had a written plan and " to do" list for th e coming year. -<:r -<:r

Eileen Stevens to speak at convention The foundation board has invited Eileen Stevens to speak at the foundation breakfast during the 1992 Convention in Baltimore. Since th e death of h e r so n , Chuck, in 1978 at Alfred University, NY, Eileen Stevens has waged a national campaign to eliminate all dangerous ph ys ical and me ntal hazing practices. Chuck was killed in a hazing incident at Klan Alpine loc al frat e rnity . Followin g this personal trage d y, Mrs. Steve ns founded a not for profit organization that bears h er so n' s nam e, Committee to Halt Useless College Killings or CHUCK. The goals of CHUCK are to bring about an awareness of hazing and legislative action from states as a way to deter hazing abuses and ensure safety of students. CHUCK also documents deaths and injuries in the hope of enlightening others. H er message is not anti-fraternity, but anti-hazing. Frate rnities and sororities work closely with her to find alternatives and positive programs. Eileen Stevens has lec tured at over 500 campuses nationwide and has spoken at numerous nation al fraternity and sorority conventions, conferences and regional meetings. She has testified at legislative hearings and has lobbied for an ti-hazing laws in several states . Such laws

hazin g continu e to be reported. Mrs. Stevens works for the day when hazing will be completely eradicated from the Greek system.

" She has been recognized for her work by numerous fraternities and sororities. Edwin L. Heminger, past president of the National Interfraternity Conference, has said, " Every individual who is even thinking of becoming (a hazer) should hear Eileen Stevens' powe rful message on hazing." Despite the almost constant admonitions that hazing cannot be tolerated in fraternity life, stori es of

Three Emma Frost Leadership Development Institutes were held during the summer of 1991 to offer training for chapter officers. Th e foundation's Emma Frost Leadership Award is used to provide stipends for deserving individual s to att en d th ese leade rship sc hool s. Prefer e nce is given to membe rs from new chapters or those who have to travel a long distance. The foundation paid a part of the travel expenses for six officers from Be ta Beta Chapte r to attend the leadership development institute in Springfield, MO, and for six officers from D elta Upsilon to attend the institute in Indianapolis, IN. Emma Frost has said th at she wants to give back what she has received from Alpha Sigma Alpha and mor e . D ear Alpha Sigma Alphas, Leoni e Lindsley Bennett, KK, died Dec. 7, 1990. Leonie was not active in the sorority after her marriage , but it was an important influence throu3 hout her life. So, as I have rea the Phoenix over the years, it was clear to me that Leonie's life was reflecting the ideals which Alpha Sigma Alpha stands for. As a tribute to the sorority, I am sending a little gift in her memory. Donald V. Bennett Laramie, WY

We had time to travel-God 's world to see . Oh! The b eauty and grandeur in a country so free . 80 arrived, they were good years too , For I still had many things to do. What happened to 70? I reall y can ' t tell , I knew I was happy and feeling quite well . Fresh air and exercise needed For good health and fun . Kite fl ying I starte d, I was sure on the run . And now 9 1 is on its way; And once again I wanted to say, " Thank you God , for each happy day."
