Two chapters closed

Corrections

It is with deep regret that the National Council of Alpha Sigma Alpha announces the closing of two longtime chapters, Pi Pi and Kappa Kappa. Kappa Kappa Chapter had been at Temple University in Philadelphia since 1922. Pi Pi Chapter had been at SUNY University at Buffalo from 1926-53 and again since 1977. The chapters on both campuses had been struggling with low membership numbers for some time.

The Fall1994 News to Note article, "Alumnae chapters recognized," failed to include the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter, which was recognized for exemplary reporting and officer training at the 1994 national convention in Milwaukee. Betty Jones Perkins Cleveland, PX, was incorrectly listed as deceased in the Summer 1994 ln Memoriam. She is alive and well and now living in Ohio. The Phoenix regrets the errors.

T

he Beta Kappa Chapter at Western Hlinois University has worked diligently to ensure that their vision for a new home became a reality. After years of planning and dreaming, the chapter broke ground for their new home on Feb. 1, 1994 and moved in just seven short months later on Aug. 20. Beta Ka ppa has been at Western Illinois for more than 50 years. Since 1961, the chapter had made Its residence In a Victorian home built In 1903. The hou se, filled with sculpted woodwork and stained glass windows , served as home to 14 women. Over time, the house became too small to accommodate the growing membership of 85 women. Several years of effort by many individuals made the chapter's dream a real ity. Nora Ten Broeck, cha pter president in 1990, devised a plan named "Project 2000" with the hope that the chapter would be able to build a new home by the year 2000. The plan involved opening a housing savings accou nt through national headquarters and utilizing chapter fundraJsers to meet this goal. In 199 1, Chapter Pre ident Candace 4 WINTER 1995

Wilson found two people, Ned and Sandy Scott Shearer, BB, to serve as chapter advisors. The couple, instructors in the university's communications department, gave the project new direction, support and their personal dedication to see it through to completion. In 1992, Chapter President Michelle Wilkinson and the Shearers decided to move the target date for the new home forward . Their vision was a new chapter home ready in the fall semester of 1994. Michelle Wilkinson and later Rosearme Saccaro, another past president, and the Shearers began to investigate purchasing land for the new house. This was no easy task with the scarcity of available land near the university and the difficulties in obtaining zoning from the Macomb city council. They also Investigated building onto the current chapter house and purchasing another structure that was a sorori ty house before becoming an a partment building. Just as It seemed there were no opportunities left, a piece of land was located near campus that the owner was willing to sell. The land was not zoned for Greek housing so the sale

was delayed until zoning could be secured. Zoning was a major obstacle for the chapter: just a week prior to its meeting with the city council another Greek organization's zoning request was turned down. Many members of the chapter attended the zoning meeting, which resulted in zoning privileges being granted to the chapter. Obtaining the proper zoning was a turning point in the process of building the new house, but there were other obstacles to overcome. Finding financial lenders, a contractor, designer, decorator, caterer and resident director were challenges the chapter and the housing corporation faced . A housing committee was formed to complete many of the tasks mentioned above. The chapter received support from the Greek community, its alumnae and the chapter advisory board and housing corporation. The old house was sold to Patti Brennan Woodrum , BK, who maintains the property as a residence for Greek organizations. ln August of 1994, 30 of the chapter's members moved into the new home. The 6,000-square-foot house includes 15 bedrooms, five THE PHOENIX OF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA

bathrooms and an additional resident director room with private bath. A formal living room flows into the dining room, and the kitchen boasts double appliances, a center island and custom cabinets. The house is also handicapped accessible. In addition to the main floor rooms, the lower level consists of a chapter room, which seats 125, a computer room, an additional bathroom, a laundry room and a TV room. Every room is wired for cable and is furnished with oak bunk beds, dressers, computer desk and chair and sliding closet doors with full-length mirrors. A concrete parking lot accommodates 19 cars, with an additional handicapped space. Landscaping will be completed by the spring to enhance the view from the deck and patio area on the three-lot wooded property. One of the most unique and beautiful features is an antique stained glass window, carefully removed from the chapter's former residence and painstakingly installed into a landing window of the new home. The color scheme of the house reflects the colors found in this window. The house was financed by Omni THE PHOENIX OF ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA

Bank and the national organization. The general contractor was Jack Laverdiere, and the furnishings were all provided by Modern Floors and Modern Home of Macomb. The chapter has had a busy fall semester with hosting their own rush, several open houses , the panhellenic progressive dinner, homecoming, a ribbon cutting ceremony and the Order of Omega initiation. Special guests at Beta Kappa's ribbon-cutting ceremony over homecoming weekend were National President Kim Ramsey Meyer, BB, Province XIV Director Maria Malayter, XX, Province XI Director Tracey Rahn, BK, and past chapter presidents Nora Ten Broeck, Michelle Wilkinson, Roseanne Saccaro, Kelly Butler and Patti Brennan Woodrum. Following the homecoming parade, the ribbon-cutting ceremony commenced at the chapter house followed by a balloon launch and brunch. Alumnae, visitors and guests were taken on guided tours of the home by Beta Kappa members. In appreciation for their service to Alpha Sigma Alpha, the chapter recently named the library in the chapter house after Ned and Sandy Shearer. It is a fitting dedication for

Alpha Sigma Alpha places renewed emphasis on the academic achievements of its chapters and individual members with new programs, standards and awards BY BETH ZUBINSKI HEIDEL, rn National Chainnan of Scholarship

Alpha Sigma Alpha has renewed its commitment to the intellectual development of its members, one of the four aims of the sorority since its founding 93 years ago. Several years ago, the national council became alarmed by the downward trend in the academic standing of Alpha Sigma Alpha chapters. Historically, sororities have claimed to promote the scholarship of their members but have not always provided the support system necessary to accomplish this. Sororities (and fraternities) have been criticized by campus administrators, as well as parents, because many chapters' GPAs are below the all-women's average for that campus. If we claim to promote scholastic excellence, the opposite of this should be true. Another factor in the council's move to re-emphasize intellectual development

was the desire to provide members of Alpha Sigma Alpha with the life-long benefit of high academic standings and skills so prized by employers in today's tight job market. As well, it's an effort to help Alpha Sigma Alpha survive on college campuses where older students, working students and five-year students have become the norm, rather than the exception. These students will not be interested in membership in an organization that neglects academic achievement. In an effort to reverse the trend of declining grade point averages and to meet the needs of today's college women, Alpha Sigma Alpha has been putting new programs and standards in place. A new scholarship handbook was introduced in 1992, and in 1994, The Encounter: A Lifetime Membership Program was introduced. Both of these programs place increased emphasis on academic achievement and elimination of nonproductive activities and requirements for all members. As in the past, a woman who has completed at least one term as a full-time student of a college or university must have a cumulative C grade point average (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or the scholastic average required for graduation on her campus, whichever of these is higher to be eligible for membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha. Now in addition, a woman who is an incoming freshman is also eligible, provided she

has achieved at least a 2.35 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in high school. Any chapter or colony may elect to raise these minimum grade point requirements by modifying its bylaws if they desire to better comply with the chapter's or university's more demanding scholastic standards. After initiation, it is also important for an Alpha Sigma Alpha member to maintain at least a minimum C average (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or the scholastic average required for graduation on her campus. If an initiated member's cumulative scholastic average falls below this requirement, she is not eligible to hold any chapter office or to vote at chapter meetings until she has been able to raise and maintain her grades at a C average or the level required for graduation. Once again, any Alpha Sigma Alpha chapter may elect to raise these minimum scholastic average requirements by modifying its bylaws. Another new and very important addition to the Alpha Sigma Alpha academic achievement standards is the standard now required for each collegiate chapter or colony. The entire chapter must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.6 (on a 4.0 scale) for the chapter to remain in good standing at the national level. Any chapter that does not maintain this academic requirement will be placed on scholastic probation by the National Council of Alpha Sigma Alpha. While on scholastic

probation, the chapter will be required to submit monthly reports to the national chairman of scholarship on the progress of the chapter's scholastic achievement and its grade point improvement. Any chapter that is still on probation for a third grading period will be required to have at least one week each month totally free of any chapter activities. These chapters also will be required to conduct a chapter academic planning meeting with a member of the national scholarship committee or national council to help them develop guidelines and activities that are more conductive to improving their scholastic averages. While a chapter is on scholastic probation, it will not be eligible for any national chapter awards and cannot be considered for four-star chapter status. In order to reward the chapters who have surpassed these minimum academic standards, recognition certificates will be presented to all chapters that have promoted and achieved scholastic excellence. Special awards will be given to all chapters that, during the grading periods in the past calendar year: • Rank first on their campus, • Are above the all-women's average, • Are above the all-panhellenic average, • Have a GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale), • Raise their GPA by 0.2 or better from the previous term. All chapters that have received a specific academic

award for four consecutive years will be given a special silver award. Award-winning chapter delegates at the Alpha Sigma Alpha National Convention will be given a special ribbon to be displayed on the delegate's name tag to further highlight the chapter's scholastic achievements. The special recognition of having their names printed in The Phoenix will go to individual members of Alpha Sigma Alpha who have achieved a cumulative grade point

average in two separate categories: • 4.0, • 3.5 and above. As we progress through the '90s, more and more emphasis will be focused upon the academic achievements and skills of college students and graduates. As members of Alpha Sigma Alpha, we must continually renew our commitment to the intellectual development of our members. Only then will our "attitude of excellence" continually shine through our members.

Staying focused on scholarship BY ELLEN FUNK MORRIS, BA National Secretary AND BETH ZUBINSKI HEIDEL, rn National Chairman of Scholarship Keeping your mind on your studies can be just as hard as trying to stay focused on the 3-D pictures and books that have become so popular. Just concentrating for a few seconds on these pictures can be a very frustrating if you are unable to "see" the hidden picture. Staying focused on your academic achievement through your college career can be just as frustrating and challenging. Staying focused on your goals while enjoying college to its fullest can be a greater challenge than some students can manage alone. But being a member of a sorority with high academic standards can be an asset to a woman as she progresses through her college career. The new scholarship

program of Alpha Sigma Alpha sets a goal of a 2.6 GPA for all chapters to attain. With the help of all chapter members, this can be accomplished. It will take coordinating chapter activities to maintain an academically healthy chapter. Chapter planning of projects and programs must take into consideration the academic requirements of its members. In order to aid each college chapter, a scholarship handbook was prepared and distributed to all chapters in 1992. This handbook contains suggestions to help the chapter tailor an academic program to meet its needs. Some of the ideas presented in this handbook include: • Limiting social activities, • Scholastic probation, • Flexible study hour schedules, • Study buddies, • Weekly contests, • Weekly incentives, • Recognition dinners,

• Weekly recognition of members' academic accomplishments, • Recognition of members achieving a 4.0 GPA or being on the dean's list. It is not intended that every chapter use all of these activities, but many of these ideas can be implemented as they fit a chapter's need to encourage individual members, as well as the chapter as a whole, to improve scholastic averages. In future issues of The Phoenix, chapter · members will be recognized for their scholastic achievements. This information will be obtained from the reports sent in by the scholarship chairman of each chapter. We hope to fill many pages with all the "winners" of scholastic achievements. "All study and no play makes Jill a dull girl." But the reverse will make Jill a non-student. Promote high academics - stay in focus.
