Five women take risks to form Alpha Sigma Alpha BY SUZANNE KILGANNON PRESTON, BI NatiDnal President

Earlier this year, the 150th anniversary of the women's suffrage movement was celebrated. In the mid1800s, women did not hold office, rarely attended college or spoke in public and did not vote. Married women were considered property of their husbands, unable to sue, divorce or own property. Many women longed for equality in many areas of their lives. It took radical leaders to publicly gather together women at Seneca Falls, NY, for a convention on "social, civil and religious conditions and rights of women." This November, Alpha Sigma Alpha celebrates its 97th anniversary. In 1901 in south central Virginia, women were allowed to pursue an education in a limited number of fields of study. In addition the Virginia legislature did not look fondly on "secret societies." The resources to develop and expand the dream of sisterhood were not readily available to the five young

'We are now the leaders who will continue the dream of our founders. Let us learn from this historic year and grow in the strength of our sisterhood.' women who founded our sorority. It took a set of radical leaders, Louise Cox, Juliette Hundley, Mary Hundley, Virginia Boyd and Calva Watson, to develop a sorority that would have a "four-fold purpose." As I read about the women of the suffrage movement, I was struck by the similarities that exist between those women and the five who founded Alpha Sigma Alpha. Both groups of women were brave trailblazers who took risks for the principles in which they believed. They stepped forward and identified themselves as leaders of a movement.

I know the suffragettes would be proud of what our founders did and of what we continue to strive for today. The lives of women are much easier now than during their time. But we should never take for granted what we have: the privilege of higher education, the privilege of choice and the privilege of the sisterhood we share in Alpha Sigma Alpha. We are now the leaders who will continue the dream of our founders. Let us learn from this historic year and grow in the strength of our sisterhood. As we look toward our centennial only a few short years away, let us commit to creating a legacy that will allow Alpha Sigma Alpha to be a place for all women to thrive. Happy Founders' Day.

chapters and wanted to participate more fully in the sisterhood and friendship they found there. Recently several women, ranging in ages from 23 to 93, have been initiated into Alpha Sigma Alpha.

The Tampa Bay duo Beatrice (Babs) McKinley was invited to a Tampa Bay Alumnae Chapter luncheon by her friend, Emma Coleman Frost, IIII, more than 10 years ago. After that luncheon, Babs continued to attend because she liked what the experience brought to her life. "I like the alumnae chapter because it keeps me young even at age 95," Babs said. "I enjoy attending luncheons where women can bring their babies, talk about upcoming marriages or their careers." Babs attended Rutgers University where she received a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition. She received her master's degree in education from Columbia University. Babs most recently

ost of us went through rush as collegians and then were initiated shortly after a period of membership education. Those collegiate days were filled with pep rallies, Greek games, intramurals, Founders' Day, candlelights, meetings and formals. There was laughter, fellowship , friendship and sisterhood. But some women did not have the opportunity or resources to join a sorority during their college years. Through the Alpha Sigma Alpha alumnae initiate program, dreams of sorortty membership still can come true. There are many reasons why women are interested in becoming initiates as alumnae. Some learn about the special sisterhood of Alpha Sigma Alpha through a close friend or relative. Some have belonged to a campus local sorority but sought to extend sisterhood after college. Some have seen AJ.A philanthropic endeavors and were interested in helping. Others have participated in alumnae chapter activities or advised collegiate

At the same time, Doris was sitting next to Sally Weyeler Constantinou, XX, in her church choir and discovered that she and Sally both knew Em Frost. For the last four years, Doris and her husband Warren have been Emma Coleman Frost's caregivers. "The Tampa Bay Alumnae Chapter has the best group of people, and I enjoy attending the meetings," Doris said. "At the national convention at Saddlebrook, I enjoyed meeting everyone and felt the tremendous sisterhood. With Em recommending me to join the sorority, it was an added bonus." Doris received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Indiana University. She will be serving on the executive board for the alumnae chapter this year. Advisor initiate Darby Gwisdala was introduced to Alpha Sigma Alpha when two collegians who worked in her office were looking for advisors in 1997. Darby, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in interpersonal and public communications from Central Michigan University, is the special assis. tant for the provost and vice president for academic affairs at the university. Darby, who knew nothing about Greek life, agreed to become the advisor after finding Beta Theta Chapter did not fit the stereotypes she had of sororities. 'The Beta Theta Chapter members are so inclusive." she said. 'There are all shapes, sizes, socioeconomic backgrounds, and they were without an advisor but still able to keep the chapter together. The national philanthropic endeavors with Special Olympic and the S. June Smith Center are very special to me, because I have two grandchildren that are handicapped." After welcoming Darby as chapter advisor, the women thought initiation would help her feel even more a part of the chapter, and Darby was initiated on Nov. 22, 1997.

Dallas connection Many Alpha Sigma Alphas dream of their daughters becoming a member of the sorority, and at the 1998 national convention, it became a reality for Betty Yount Gardner, BA. Shannon Haggard Kelly started attending reorganization meetings of the Dallas Alunmae Chapter with her mother while in college. She quickly became the "little sis" of the chapter. Shannon graduated from the University of Dallas in 1991. A French high school teacher, she resides with her husband Sean and newborn son Conor in Coppell, TX. "Being involved with the Dallas Alunmae Chapter has taught me a lot

"I want to interact with professional women who can be my mentors," Dana said, "and that is why I am interested in continuing my membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha." Dana attends the University of North Texas and is working on her degree in athletic training. She recently gave birth to her first child, a legacy, Julia. Mary Watson learned of Alpha Sigma Alpha through her friend of 11 years, Tanya Trumbla, 1::. Y. Through Tanya, Mary was introduced to the Dallas Alunmae Chapter and felt at home instantly. Mary was sponsored by Tanya Trumbla and Kelly Augustyniak, 1::. Y, during initiation at the 1998 national convention. During the 1998 national convention in Dallas, more scholarships, and in the greatest amounts ever, were awarded to collegiate and alumnae members. This was made possible by collegians and alumnae like you who gave generously to the 1997-98 Annual Sisterhood Appeal. Your support has made a difference in the lives of many of our members as was evidenced by the reaction of the scholarship recipients who were in attendance at convention. And we have made a difference beyond the boundaries of our own sisterhood. Last year through the Foundation, we contributed more than $10,000 to the S. During the 1998 national tion, the Foundation recognized 36 charter members of the Wilma Wilson Sharp Society and rec1Dl!Ilizcl collegiate and alumnae chapters their contributions. The Dallas Alumnae Chapter surprised the vention body by donating $1,998 the Foundation and challenging next host site, Richmond, VA, to tribute $2,000 at the convention in1 2000. loul1da11ion Chairman Dr. Rosemary Carucci Goss, BIT, accepts a check for ! ,998 from members of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter. The chapter challenged convention hostesses to contribute checks to the Foundation in a dollar matching the year of the convention.

Memortal ScholarsWp and the S. June Smith Endowed Founders' Memortal ScholarsWp, were awarded for the first time.

As the Foundation looks forward to the sorortty's 100th anniversary, we have begun to look at how we celebrate tWs significant

those individuals who have given cumulative gifts of $1,000 or more to the Foundation. To date there are 48 "Proud 100" members and many who are close to reaching the $1,000 contrtbution level. Approximately one year ago the sorortty began a new identity campaign: "Every member makes a difference." Soon after, the Foundation began using the slogan, "Every dnUnr makes a difference. " For the Foundation, the sorortty and the community we setve, every dollar does make a difference. Please use the forms included in tWs issue to help make that difference. Become a member of the "Proud 100."

Betty Urban Wallick, zz, right, congratulates Lois Beers, Br, on helping put donations during the 1998 national convention over the $10,000 mark. This matched the amount given during the 1997 Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institutes.

Chapters report on spring semester activities Epsilon Epsilon, Emporia State University, KS

Teeter-totter-a-thon Epsilon Epsilon Chapter had its first annual faculty tea, organized by freshman member Lacey Kaberline, in February. Many professors attended, giving members the opportunity to speak with them outside the classroom. The chapter held its fifth annual teeter-totter-a-than last spring. The women, along with the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon, teetered for 36 hours straight. The money raised was donated to the Emporia State Child Development Center. In preparation for the event, members of the chapter collected money at local businesses. Over $1 ,000 was raised to benefit the children during this philanthropic activity. A lesson in hazing Last winter, Nu Nu Chapter members assisted players and coaches during the Special Olympics intramural floor hockey game. At the beginning of the spring term, Drexel University sponsored a seminar on the dangers of hazing. Members attended this informative lecture and

learned how perilous hazing can be. It was an important lesson for the entire Greek community. Members and new members have been getting to know each other at events such as a sisterhoodBBQ. Christine PoweU Alpha Beta, Tn.unan State University, MO

A celebrity in Ireland Alpha Beta Chapter President Jen Butler experienced St. Patrick's Day in a way she will never forget. Jen, her family and crew members traveled to Dublin, Ireland, in March to dye the Liffey River green. Jen's father and his crew are well-known for the annual dying of the Chicago River and spent two weeks in Ireland doing the same. The Walt Disney Co. sponsored the event as a promotion for their hit release, "Flubber." Although Jen and the rest of the crew worked hard during the event, they were able to experience all the wonderful riches of the country and its culture. Francie Poehling

The following day, 15 chapter members participated in a walk for Multiple Sclerosis. During dedication days in April, members participated in events from aerobics to self-defense classes. A pizza fund-raiser in April helped send members to the 1998 A!A National Convention. During this successful fundraiser, members work at a local pizza restaurant where they keep tips and 20 percent of the sales. Miranda Price Zeta Theta, Wagner College, NY
