OUR S ORORIT Y SONG S Are you a smg mg ch apter ? If not, you should be. A singing chapter will usually secure more girls in rushing seaso n, than one which does not make use of music. The singing furnishes a great deal o f the "pep" needed to make a chapter successful. It has been said that any person who does not know the songs of his college and does not sing th em, does not know his college. It is the same with the soro rity . Know your songs and sing them. Do not be content w ith the so ngs you sing every day, but be constantly learning new ones. Show others that you have some songs, as good as theirs, a nd perhaps even a little better. The purpose of thi s P hoenix is to suppl y you with new songs to practice during the summer months, so th at when you return to college in the fall, you will have a new stock ready for use when the rushing season begins. The so ngs here printed are in no definite order, and may serve for many different occasions. Some a re grave and some are gay. By adding these twenty-odd numbers to tho se you already possess. you should have a collection ready for use in any demand. Many so ngs have familiar tunes. If you a re unab le to locate the music for any particular one, I am sure th at if you would write the person or chapter who contributed that song, you may secure the music or be told where to purchase it. The Editor wishes to thank all chapter editors who have helped to make th is collection of so ngs.

ASPIRE, SEEK, ATTAIN Aspire, seek, attain. Embodied in these words is the spirit, the life, the soul of Alpha Sigma Alpha. It is an open motto that "he who runs may read," as clear and open as are the faces and hearts of the girls who follow the Phoenix and wear the star and crown of Alpha S igma A lpha. To aspire. The potency, the feeling embodied in this word can be fully und erstood only as we look back at the past ages. \ Nhat has brought us up through centuries of ignorance, bondage, and crime to the freedom and beauty of life which we have about us? The aspirations of noble men and women. Without aspirations Christ's work on earth would have been lost; without aspiration no great artistic masterpiece would have been given to the 路world, no great invention made, no great reform accomplished. Through our aspirations the soul urges us on to make life more full and beautiful. What a gift then, to young womanhood, the motto, "To aspire. 路' To see!?. Through the ages men and women have been consta ntl y seeking. For what? Some would answer wealth, others fame, honor, joy. All these things, however, may be summ ed up in the one word " happin ess." Happiness not only for ourselves, but for those clear to us. And now, at last, men and women are seeking for world happiness. Vle know that only through service can this come about. So the girls of Alpha Sigma A lpha are seeking the higher, bigger, better things in life, that they may rend er the vvorld a more glorious service. To attain. \!\That would we attain? Fame, wealth, honor, peace? No, not if wealth means poverty to others, not if fame makes a self-centered, unsympathetic woman, not if peace means the closing of our eyes upon the struggles about us. Let us pray rath er to r ender service so great that in proportion as we give. we shall receive the full measure of happiness . Let us not find peace and quiet by shirking the work all about us. Let our fame be that of good wor ks and our honor that of wise, courageous. loving service to humanity. Follow ing the torchlight of th is motto, Alpha Sigma A lpha makes itself felt in college circles; and as its girls asp ire to great and beautiful thing s, seek wisdom and atta in it by loving se rvice, so shall its power be fe lt in the w ider field of life. GERALDINE R uNDELL,

B. B.

ALPHA ALPHA A few early touches of spring since the first of March has set us all planning our Sunday mormng breakfasts in the country. Musically our group has been doing a great deal. Our six members of the Madrigal Club enjoyed the annual trip to Cincinnati, which is made for the purpose of exchanging concerts with them. They were royally entertained at a tea before the concert, and afterward were again entertained by the girls of the University. March the tenth, Miss Amy Swisher gave the most charming bridge party for us in the Tallawanda. The afternoon was spent at cards, and delicious refreshments were served. The various girls' gymnasium classes gave an exhibition which was certainly interesting. Several of our girls entered in the sports. Esther Ehrhart was on the first team of the Bishop basket ball team. An annual event, always of importance is the Bishop-Hipburn game. Bishop received the cup last year .and due to the fact that the score this year was eighteen to eight, again has it for the coming year. Marjorie Martin was one of the three girls nominated as candidates for the secretaryship of the Y. vV. C. . for next year. We could hardly wait until the election was over, and when it was over, our 1arjorie had been elected! Another of our sisters has left us, and she is Helen Stepleton. How we did hate to see her leave! Helen has really left with a very good reason though, as she is teaching music in Springfield, Ohio. On a Sunday evening before she left we gave a little farewell for her in Miss Myer's apartments in Bishop Hall. It seems queer not to have her here, but we are so glad that he can return for our formal in March. Mo t of our thoughts right at present are for our formal. All the various committees are wearing mysterious smiles, and

THE PHOENIX

23

it is whispered that there is a certain prize for the girl who makes the most chrysanthemums for our decorations. Several of the alumnae have written that they a re returning. They are : Polly Parrott, Leona Ehrhart, Zelma Sargeant, Mary Helen Clark, and perhaps Mary Harlan. Vve know there are many more who are making favorable plans. It will certainly be fine to meet all these girls again, and for this very reason the Misses Swisher are giv ing us a tea on the afternoon of our dance. It is perhaps of interest to tell of our new hall. The nam e is to be "Wells Hall" and it is to be the most modern and beautiful hall at Miami. The cornerstone is to be laid soon and it has been decided that each organization on the campus shall contribute a small message whi ch might interest the girls one hundred or more years from now. V/e wrote our history , our present activiti~s and each girl signed her name. A page from the Phoenix was also added. How interested the 2023 A :S A will be to find all this and read it. Vve have two important announcements 路 to make. I sabell e Key Reeves announces the arrival of a son. How we do welcome this new little member and hope that he may some day visit us here. \tVe also have another littl e A :S A, so the proud mother, E loise Everett Martin, informs us. How our number does grow !

ALPHA BETA A lpha Beta is looking forward to an enjoyable quarter, working together and getting acquainted with one another. vVe decided at ou r first meeting not to do any rushing and only to bid two or three girls, who had been previously rushed . Thus much of our business was curtai led and we could spend more of our meetings with programs. O ur first program consisted of a piano solo by Gertrude Farrington and a talk on "The \;\!omen's Minimum Wage Commission" by Mrs. E. M. Violette, one of our patronesses and a member of the Commission. At the second program meeting one of the girls is going to give the life of Paderewski and another is going to play some of his compos itions. As soon as the weather permits we are intending to take hikes. Thus

24

THE PHOE IX

each week the program will vary so that they will touch the interests of all the girls. On Mother's Day we want to have a tea for our A. S. A. Mothers and also the Mothers' Initiation. We are planning to pay our debts to other sororities with a party, and our Hermes Day celebration will take the form of an Alumnae Reunion with a big dance and a breakfast. Alpha Beta wishes to announce the engagement of its adviser, Miss Lola Brandenburg, to Mr. Harry K. Leedham. Mr. Leedham is connected with Ginn and Company, book publishers. They expect to be married some time in June, and are to live in St. Louis. \file wish them all joy and happmess.

BETA BETA Beta Beta gave the second of a series of entertainments for friends and patronesses of the sorority at the chapter house. The entertainment took the form of an informal supper. The guest of the evening was Mrs. McMillan, one of our Patronesses. \lYe gave a pot luck supper one Sunday evening not long after this, at the chapter house. The _guests were Mrs. Broman, Miss Louise Putske, Miss Reinsk, and Mi Autrey.

GAMMA GAMMA Gamma Gamma chapter has been very bu y with plea ures and duties this term. The Valentine Party given in the sorority room was full of enjoyment from beginning to end. The room was decorated beautifully, and we spent a delightful hour of conversation, and games, after which luncheon was served. Our second event was a luncheon given at Lee Huckins Hotel in Oklahoma City, while eight of our girls were present at the State Teachers' Meeting. Mrs. Brown was asked as chaperone, and Mrs. Battenberg as guest. vVednesday, the twenty-first of February was a memorable day. It was just seven years ago that our first pledge was initiated, and this year at noon we initiated Lenore Shafer.

of ze t and personal pleasure into producing their music. A pleasant balcony with palms made the intermissions eem like jolly little get-to-gethers, where groups might converse and enjoy themselves. March twentieth will mark an unusual program meeting. Th e plans are secret so far and as a result interest is keen and the date impatiently awaited. In May, the second house party of the year will take place at \Ves tford, a delightful town not far from Boston. Cottages will be obtained near a charming fresh water lake, with an abundant supply of canoes, tennis courts and a pine grove to add to the general enjoyment. In the near future we shall initiate our pledge, Charlotte Adams, and may have a Mother-Patroness initiation before the summer vacation. Theta Theta chapter sends greetings and best wishes to all the other chapters.

IOTA IOTA Iota Iota has been battling with flu and blizzards this last month. In spite of these handicaps we have been doing much of our regular work. Grace Davis has been elected first VicePresident and Faye McClung, second Vice-President of Y. W. C. A. for the coming year. Our initiation will take place on Saturday morning, April seventh , at the home of our patroness, M rs. George B. Peak. We expect to initiate Gladys Fairchi ld , Dorothy Battershell. L yda Larson, Isabel Diehl. Our initiation dance will be combined with our spring dance and wi ll be held on Apri l twentieth at Hoyt Sherman Place. On April twenty-first we intend to give the MotherPatroness degree and entertain our mothers. Mary Hughes, Helen Parks, and Isabel Diehl had parts in "Ma id 0' Manderin'," the original musical comedy by the Girls' Athletic Association. This is the third annual comedy. The proceeds go to the swimming pool fund. A lmost all the Iota Iota girls were connected with it in some way. The Athletic Association sent us a letter of special recognition for our ass istance in the "old paper drive," to raise money for our longed-for swimming pool. Fae McClung has won her

"D" sweater. No Drake girl had won one before, and Fae is only a Junior. Christine Corbett was pledged to Kappa Delta Pi. The Inter-National Convention of Christian Endeavor will convene in Des Moines, July fourth to eleventh. Vve hope to meet all visiting Alpha Sigs at that time . 路 At present we are looking forward to the visit of Miss Schockley. Although she happens to come in a vacation period, we are all making an effort to be on hand to meet her.

KAPPA KAPPA Kappa Kappa must, first of all in this number of "Phoenix," tell you about its initiation banquet, which was held on the evening of February tenth. Freda Bunting gave the invocation. After this, ~ ongs were sung, interspersed with speeches. Adelaide Zearfoss was the toastmistress, and certainly made a good one, and Mary Shallcross gave a welcome to the new members. Marion Kinback expressed the message from the new initiates to the old members. They always say the best is yet to come. So it is in this case. Several of the alumnae were with us for the initiation and banquet, among whom were Betty Marsh, Mildred Strunk, Helen Leudrop, and Alice Garretson. Miss Beach and Miss Doyle were also present. Helen Leudrop brought greetings from the alumnae to the new members, and Miss Beech gave a short speech on the ideals of the sorority. We regret very much that Elizabeth Eby could not attend the services on account of her serious illness. Her absence was keenly felt by all and we are hoping for a speedy recovery so that she will be with us again. Our Valentine party was held at the sorority room on February seventeenth. Although at a late date, it was the nearest to Saint Valentine's Day that could be arranged. Games were played, in which twenty of the girls, and Mrs . Doyle took part. Oh, yes-fortunes were told. We are all going to have rich, popular, humorous and handsome husbands. Imagine that! Scandal! S-h-h-h ! Do you know a beautiful diamond ring 路 has settled nicely on the fourth finger of the left hand of Helen Leudrop, who graduated from Temple University in Home Economics last June? You can see now why she took

the course that she did. It's a good course, all right! Now as to the lucky man. I won't keep you in suspense any longer for I know you are all dying to hear-Mr. Charlie \rVood! He also is a graduate of Temple University, and we wish to extend our hearty congratulations to both of them. LAMBDA LAMBDA

Lambda Lambda's celebration of St. Valentine's day took the form of a dance at the cozy little Mandarin, on Lockbourne Road. Myriad crimson and white festoons were hung from the walls to the lights. These and the huge crimson hearts emblazoned with A. ~. A. in gold, and the strings of tiny crimson hearts draping the French windows made an attractive background for the dresses of the girls. The symbol of Saint Valentine appeared also in the refreshments, for heart-shaped cookies were served with punch. Our guest? for the evening were Helen Hudson, Helen Milliken, and Esther Berkshire . of Delta Delta, and Miss Gross of Alpha Xi Delta, who is teaching in Parkersburg, West Virginia with Miss Berkshire. Mr. and Mrs . Boyd F. Bode were chaperons. Our rushing parties in the winter quarter have numbered three so far, a spread at "J onny" Jones; cards with Betty McCloud, and a spread at the home of Rachael Van Hook. On Saturday, March third, over two thousand undergraduates participated in Ohio State's ninth Intramural Festival, held at the Coliseum. The varied program included relays, boxing, wrestling, fencing and races; a new number being staged every two m inutes. Sara Long, representing Alpha Sigma Alpha in the needle-threading contest, placed her sorority fourth among twenty participating. Lambda Lambda announces the pledging of Francis Henning of Stryker, Ohio, a Junior in the College of Education: and Charlotte Knauss, of Newark, Oh io, a sophomore in the arne college.

I Among Our Alumnae CHICAGO CITY ASSOCIATION The City Association of Chicago has had only social meetings this year for seve ral reasons, the most important of which is that the g irl s are al l located in opposite parts of the city and some in suburbs, so that it is very hard to get together. Therefore we have had three theatre pa rties, where we could centrally meet on Saturday afternoons. Hazel Strahan had a business meeting at her home, after which we played bridge. MIDDLETOWN EX-COLLEGIO CHAPT ER ASSOCIATION The third meeting of the Middletown Ex-Collegia Chapter Association was held on Tuesday, February twentieth. Mary Helen Clark gave the legend of Saint Valentine. The remainder of the evening was spent in talking over college days. A dainty two course lunch was served carrying out the color scheme of vVashington's Birthday. Hatchets were given as favors. The girls seem to enjoy the meetings, as that is the only time that all can get together during the month . ZEUI.\ SARGE .\NT.

THE WARRENSBURG ASSOCIATION The alumnae of Warrensburg met in February 1922, for the purpose of organizing a Warrensburg Association. V\Te started with a membership of ten and the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Otto Heberling; Vice-President, Mrs. H. H . Russell, Jr.; Secretary, Mrs. L.A. McMeekin; and Treasurer, Mrs. Amos Burke. We set aside the second Saturday of each month for our meetings and dues of twenty-five cents were to be paid . Many delightful meetings were held with the different members. The November meeting was held at Lillian Ford McMeekin's, at which time the active chapter met with us and we all worked on articles for the bazaar. Miss Hatz, one of our patronesses, who is on a leave of absence, was presented with a gift. The meeting with Ethel \iVorwick was a shower for Bess Carter Kibbe. It was a fine meeting and the presents were presented in uch a clever way. Ethel's little girl, Eleanor, was dressed as a Cupid and came in carrying a big red heart with B. C. on one side and E. K. on the other. She was followed by her cousin, Jack Bruce, who carried a small trunk with "Just Married" and "All Aboard for Boston" signs all

over it, which he presented to Bess Carter. Vve had great fun listening to all the poems attached to the packages which were found in the trunk. We received as favors miniature bride's bouquet made of candy. Bess Carter received a large bouquet. Last summer we entertained the active chapter and the Patronesses with a picnic at the home of Lillian Ford McMeekin. Everybody seemed to have a good time and they especially enjoyed themselves at eating time. Our main work this winter was helping with the bazaar which we feel was a great success, considering the fact that we did not have our Bess Carter Kibbe here to help. During the year some of our first members left, but we have added new ones. Our membership is now nine. They areMildred Morrow Burks, Euba Bettes Heberling, Ida M. Wolfe Russell, Lillian Ford McMeekin, Ada Campbell Parker, Nellie Mayes Hunt, Erma' Burri ss Rusk, Gweneth Jordan, and "Billie" Hogan Greer. On account of illness since the first of the year no meetings have been held this year. LILLIAN FoRD McMEEKIN.

The sorority extends its sincerest sympathy to Eleanor Lowry, A. r., former National Registrar, whose father has died suddenly.

I WOULD BE TRUE I I I I I I I I

would be true for there are those who trust me; would be pure for there are those who care; would be strong for there is much ~o suffer; would be brave for there is much to dare. would be friend of all-the foe-the friendless; would be giving and forget the gift; would be humbl e for I know my weakness; would look up-and laugh-and lift. -Ha1'old Arnold Walters.

MAY EACH ONE DO HIS BEST

It takes all sorts of men I know, To make this world of ours, But the deeds and works of some Above the re st must tower. The struggle and the game of life, Is very hard to w in , But he who plays it straight all time 路w ill surely find a thrill therein. One little word that I may say, O ne kind or loving deed, May do more than words can路 tell To help some friend in need. So in thi s strife for V ictory, May each one do hi s part, And try each moment of the clay, To cheer ome lonely heart. - F .\E McCLUNG, 1. I.
