How many issues of the Phoenix of Alpha Sigma Alpha have ever been published? Let’s try and figure this out together. The first issue came out November 1914, so if there were four issues every year since then, there would be 404.

F R O M T HE P R E S I DENT

BY M E L I SSA KOC H M E R R I A M, E E | N AT I ON AL P R E S I D E N T

I was recently thinking about how many photos I snap each day. My typical day may be something like this - taking a quick picture of my boys riding their bikes, snapping a photo of my Diet Coke can because it reads “trailblazer” and getting a selfie with a friend at dinner. I sometimes wonder why I take so many photos. Maybe it’s because it is easy with my iPhone, I need to capture the moment to share on social media or I want to preserve the memory in time. Photos remind us of the circumstance, place or the feeling at that time in the past. We have all heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” that refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image. I personally love reliving the past with the Timehop application on my phone. This app brings back your social media posts or photos that you took from your phone on that day in history. I love to see my boys as babies or witness a special photographic moment from an Alpha Sigma Alpha convention. It’s fun to live those moments again. I only wish it could pull up images from my collegiate experience. I was in the era of actually having to use a camera, hoping the photo turned out good and waiting days to get the pictures developed. Although, I still get that warm fuzzy when I pull out my Alpha Sigma Alpha albums and look back at everything. The photos instantly bring back the memories of recruitment, bid nights, date parties, big/little reveals, service projects and fun times hanging with my Epsilon Epsilon Chapter sisters. Those memories I have as a collegiate member of Alpha Sigma Alpha were possible because of five young women in Farmville, VA. These close friends who also wanted to be sisters made history by starting the fourth sorority at State Female Normal School on Nov. 15, 1901. Although I would have loved to spend time with these audacious leaders, I can visualize these women because of the images we have of each sister. I can relate to the sisterhood they shared and their experiences as Alpha Sigma Alpha women. One of my favorite photos is of our first initiate Hattie Kelly’s dormitory room. It’s adorned with our letters. I love this because I think we could easily today see a similar dorm room on instagram full of Alpha Sigma Alpha pride. These photos bring back that time but also help us realize how things are still the same.

It’s amazing that 114 years later we are still an organization that fosters close friendships between members and develops women of poise and purpose. We are blessed to be living in a time when we can take full advantage of the power of an image and the ability to share with sisters across the country. Take a moment this Founders’ Day to share a photo from your Alpha Sigma Alpha experience with #ASAMemory and tag sisters to remind them of our special bond. Some of us may need to scan the photo but it will be fun to see the different hair styles and fashion from the decades! Let’s light up social media and let the world know that Nov. 15 is Alpha Sigma Alpha’s Founders’ Day!

Beta Kappa Chapter at Western Illinois University

In May 2015, Alpha Sigma Alpha reinstalled its

The Reinstallation Weekend On May 3, 2015, the Beta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was reinstalled at Western Illinois University. Several Beta Kappa Chapter alumnae, including Past National President Nora Ten Broeck, attended the celebration. Members of Alpha Beta Chapter, Truman State University, MO, Gamma Omega Chapter, Eastern Illinois University and Theta Nu Chapter, Knox College, IL, attended and served as sponsors for the Beta Kappa members during the Sanctuary Degree Service.

The next morning, attendees participated in the installation services, marking the official reinstallation of Beta Kappa Chapter.

The celebration continued that evening as family and friends of Beta Kappa Chapter joined collegians for the Installation Banquet. National Historian and Associate Professor of Western Illinois University’s Department of History Jen McNabb, PhD, ΓM, gave the keynote speech for the banquet, during which she discussed the history of legacies of Alpha Sigma Alpha and the Beta Kappa Chapter, in addition to presenting the chapter with a historical artifact from Beta Kappa Chapter’s archives. National President Melissa Koch Merriam, EE, presented members with membership certificates. Both members and new members were presented with phoenix recognition pins and the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation’s charter member charms, symbolizing their accomplishments as founding members.

Following the ceremonies, alumnae and collegians joined the newly reinstalled chapter to celebrate. Leadership Consultant Kim Richard, EK, served as the mistress of ceremonies for the luncheon. National President Melissa Koch Merriam, EE, presented the chapter with gifts on behalf of the national organization, and collegiate Chapter

National Vice President of Communication Kim Benson, ΔN-B, presented Panhellenic Council President Courtney Powelson, ΦΣΣ, with a fraternal enhancement grant on behalf of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The purpose of these grants is to provide funding to the fraternity and sorority community for educational programming.

The installation activities began on Saturday, May 2, when Beta Kappa Chapter alumnae joined the chapter and new members for a reception.

Members of the chapter had the opportunity to make connections with the women who had left a legacy on a historical chapter and campus. The colony’s first president, Elizabeth Lindstrom, describes her feelings about the reinstallation of this historical chapter. “It was not an easy journey for us and it took every bit of team work, determination and energy we had to get to installation weekend. I have never been more proud of my sisters or to be a founding [member] of Beta Kappa as I was in that moment. As a chapter, we successfully lived, talked, dreamed and worked for [this].” Beta Kappa Chapter plans to continue hosting events for alumnae each semester in order to share their passion and hard work and to learn more about their heritage to motivate them to continue growing and surpassing their goals. Celebrating Life-Long Membership Alpha Sigma Alpha provides unaffiliated women who have graduated from college the opportunity to join our organization through alumna initiation. Rebecca Richards, a graduate student at Western Illinois University who serves as Beta Kappa’s membership education advisor and faculty advisor, was one of the thirty-five women granted membership through the Sanctuary Degree Service. As a graduate assistant in Western Illinois University’s housing department, Rebecca knew many of the chapter members, who serve in various roles in the department, on both personal and professional levels. Their impact in her life allowed Rebecca to realize the powerful influence one can have on others through their life-long journey as a sorority woman.

Giving Back to the Community The chapter participated in at least three service and giving opportunities each semester last year in order to give back to their communities. One event that the chapter took part in was Western Illinois University’s 2nd Annual Dance Marathon event to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. Senior member Cassidy Pogue, who served as treasurer from February 2014 through November 2014, worked with university faculty to begin hosting Dance Marathon on WIU’s campus. Through her hard work and dedication, Cassidy’s efforts resulted in more than $51,000 raised for the Children’s Miracle Network this year. “My motivation for my involvement in Dance Marathon came from wanting to be more involved on Western’s campus,” said Cassidy. “I heard about WIU trying to get a board together so I looked into the organization and fell in love with the cause and was excited for the opportunity to get students at WIU excited about raising money and making a difference in the lives of the children.” Beta Kappa had a team and placed second in the amount of money contributed for the event. Phoenix of Alpha Sigma Alpha | Spring 2015

“Generosity is my favorite core value because the world is about what is shared, not what is kept. We are all asked to give something whether it be our time, money, or words of wisdom.”

“I am excited to build relationships with sisters across the country, learn about each chapter I visit, and work with women to improve chapter relations.”

WOMAN OF

Poise and Purpose The core values of Alpha Sigma Alpha are the foundation of my happiness. With the stress of the real world, we often forget about balance; the balance of intellectual, physical, social and spiritual experiences. Being an engineer at a pharmaceutical company, I have a responsibility to act with integrity to provide cost effective and safe medicine for people around the world and to improve their quality of life. I balance this intellectual challenge with another core value, enjoyment. I spend my free time in the mountains – snowboarding, mountaineering, hiking, climbing. From this enjoyment I have seen many places and fostered many friendships. These experiences have inspired me to volunteer at a nonprofit organization where I teach others how to be safe and enjoy the mountains. I am a woman of poise and purpose because I am reminded to fill my days with satisfying activity; I hope that you too pursue whatever it is that you love. Kahle Toothill, GI Process Validation Engineer & Mountain Lover
