Four years ago, I had no idea the ride I was in for. I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to serve as your national president. The trust and faith placed in me has been humbling. This has been a life-changing experience. I have grown in my confidence, sharpened my strategic thinking skills, further developed my leadership skills and most certainly exercised my crisis management skills. Never in a million years did I imagine the change our sorority would go through in an incredibly short period of time. • Masks, social distancing, stay-at-home orders, online learning, virtual experiences – a virtual convention even! • A call to action, to condemn and speak out against the systemic racism that continues in our country and threatens the health and wellbeing of our black and brown sisters and their communities. • A sense of urgency to advance our diversity, equity and inclusion work more quickly. • A revision to The Ritual of Alpha Sigma Alpha. • A decline in high school graduation rates, which leads to a decline in college enrollments, which impacts our collegiate membership numbers and in turn, the sorority’s financial operations. • The need for increased mental health resources and bystander intervention training. • A podcast, sisterhood meet-ups on Zoom and so much more!
Together, we have faced challenges that we never could have imagined and have stretched how we define the sorority experience. What we have learned through all of this is that the sorority experience is more important now than it has ever been. Today’s students are looking for a sense of belonging and a connection to others. They are looking to build their leadership skills, gain more confidence and serve their communities. They are student activists, standing up for what they believe in, and social justice warriors, looking to build a more inclusive and accepting world. Alpha Sigma Alpha provides that safe space for women to learn and grow and navigate how they want to show up in this life. We provide connections with other women, gather strength from shared experiences, learn from other’s challenges and amplify each other’s successes. I have found this and so much more through my membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha. To quote Melinda Gates in her book, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World: “I believe women’s groups are essential for each of us individually but also for society generally – because progress depends on inclusion, and inclusion begins with women.” There’s no possible way I could thank everyone that has made an impact on the person and leader I am today so I will say to all of you, thank you. It has been my greatest honor to serve as your national president. My favorite part has been getting to know so many of you and celebrating our amazing sisterhood. Each interaction has overflowed my bucket, filled with warmth and caring and compassion. I couldn’t be prouder to be an Alpha Sigma Alpha. Joining AΣA was quite simply the best decision I have ever made!
These past four years have been a whirlwind, full of historical firsts and a test of our strength and resolve as members of Alpha Sigma Alpha. This quote from the Service for the Installation of a New Chapter continues to resonate across generations:

As an alumna of Alpha Sigma Alpha, I know the important role the Phoenix serves to our Sorority. This magazine captures the history of Alpha Sigma Alpha while also offering a window into the future of the organization. The Phoenix allows collegiate and alumnae members alike to be informed about the state of the Sorority and celebrate the successes of our chapters and sisters. That is why I am so excited to play a role in the history of Alpha Sigma Alpha by serving as editor of the Phoenix.

As you read through these pages, it is my hope you find a sense of pride in learning about the accomplishments of our sisters. As a collegian, I remember flipping through the pages hoping to see a chapter sister highlighted for her good work. As an alumna, I find a new sense of delight in seeing how vast our sisterhood truly is and how our members are improving the world around them.

In this issue, you will also find an update on recent meetings held by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). As NPC member organizations gathered for the Annual Conference, there was a strong focus on the need to prioritize growth in recruitment. At the NPC Annual Membership Meeting, a number of changes were made to the NPC Bylaws, Unanimous Agreements and College and Alumnae Panhellenic policies. Read more about these events on pages 8-9.

THE ACADEMY Alpha Sigma Alpha is excited to announce the return of in-person Academy events during the spring and fall of 2023. The Academy is Alpha Sigma Alpha’s regional conference dedicated to providing collegiate members with opportunities for personal and professional development. Events will be held in three cities during the spring of 2023 and in four different cities in the fall of 2023. Collegiate chapters will be preassigned an Academy location. Location information, dates and other details will be shared with chapters and available on the Alpha Sigma Alpha website this fall.

In 1924 a state charter was granted to Gamma Sigma Sorority; becoming the first sorority on the Fort Hays campus. In the spring of 1927 Gamma Sigma petitioned and was accepted into Alpha Sigma Alpha. On March 17, 1928 the Tau Tau Chapter was installed. Only four alumnae were able to attend the installation due to the “fiercest snowstorm of the year.” Two deans of women at Hays have been Alpha Sigma Alphas: Elizabeth Agnew, TT (pictured top row, 4th from the left) and Wilma Wolf, XX.

NATIONAL PANH ELLENIC CONFERENCE UPDATE
Recent Meetings of the National Panhellenic Conference BY LORETTA GOOD, NPC CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER
The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC)—the trade association for 26 inter/national women’s-only sororities, including Alpha Sigma Alpha—hosted its Annual Conference, March 31 – April 1, at The Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky. The event, which had been postponed from fall 2021, was followed by the 2022 NPC Annual Membership Meeting on April 2. “After several pandemic-related delays, it was truly special for NPC to host this Annual Conference and bring representatives of our member organizations together in person for robust conversation and friendship across badges,” said NPC Chairman Cheri M. De Jong. NPC Annual Conference The purpose of the Annual Conference is to convene NPC’s member organizations for networking and discussion of topics of mutual interest. This event kicked off on March 31 with a welcome luncheon and the State of the Conference report. NPC Chairman De Jong began by welcoming attendees and asking 8 Phoenix of Alpha Sigma Alpha
them to remember those who had passed since the Conference last gathered, whether due to the pandemic or another cause. She also asked attendees to reflect on the purpose of the meeting and the Panhellenic spirit that brings the Conference together to work cooperatively to make a positive difference for NPC organizations and their members. Next, De Jong and NPC CEO Dani Weatherford, J.D., presented the State of the Conference report on behalf of the NPC Board of Directors. De Jong shared updates on work of the board, including the various initiatives the board has directed and how those initiatives are defining their future focus. Weatherford then shared an update on the work of NPC staff and volunteers, focusing on the many projects completed this past year, as well as some of the ongoing work related to finishing the 2019-22 Strategic Plan. Taking the place of a traditional town hall, “The Conference Conversation” brought attendees together for discussion on three topics. Most significantly, the majority of the conversation focused on the member
organizations’ strong focus on growth in recruitment and what actionable steps the Conference can take so more women join our organizations. Programming also included formal awards presentations. During the NPC Foundation dinner on Thursday, the NPC Foundation presented the 2021 Women in Higher Education Achievement Award (WHEA Award) to Dr. Cecilia E. Suarez, assistant professor of intercultural communication & global leadership, department of agricultural education & communication, University of Florida, and a member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. The NPC Foundation also provided recognition for Barbie Chadwick, the outgoing NPC Foundation president and member of Gamma Phi Beta. During the Friday night NPC Awards dinner, the following awards were presented: • Distinguished Service Award: Patricia Plumlee “Patty” Disque, a long-time NPC volunteer and member of Chi Omega. • Harriet Macht Outstanding Alumnae Panhellenic Award: Houston Alumnae Panhellenic Association.
of these actions were outcomes of the recent Recruitment Reform Projects and designed to create a more authentic recruitment experience for potential new members and further reduce barriers to sorority membership.

Event programming also included large group sessions, including a panel discussion with four campus administrators about trends in higher education and a virtual presentation from VOX Global about NPC’s marketing and public relations efforts. Attendees also met with NPC Partner Program representatives. Weatherford said, “While we believe this was a very successful event, we’ve already begun to analyze feedback from the attendees so we can make future Annual Conferences even more relevant and engaging.” NPC will
host its next Annual Conference, Oct. 13 – 15, in Indianapolis. 2022 NPC Annual Membership Meeting Following the NPC Annual Conference, the Council of Delegates met for the 2022 NPC Annual 2018 Membership Meeting. Per the NPC Bylaws, the Council of Delegates is composed of a representative from each of the 26 NPC member organizations, and this meeting is required to be held between Jan. 1 and June 1 annually. During the 2022 NPC Annual Membership Meeting, the primary business objective was the consideration of additions, changes and deletions to the NPC Bylaws, Unanimous Agreements and College and Alumnae Panhellenic policies. The delegates adopted nearly 25 amendments to the NPC Bylaws as proposed by the Bylaws Review Committee. They also adopted changes the Values-Based Recruitment – POLICY and eliminated the Panhellenic Officer Disassociation During Recruitment – POLICY. Both
Delegates also received the financial report and discussed NPC’s government relations platform. In addition, the delegates elected the 2022-23 Nominating Committee, responsible for soliciting nominations of women to serve on the 202325 NPC Board of Directors. The committee members are Erin Killingsworth, Alpha Delta Pi; Jamie Jones Miller, Alpha Sigma Tau; Megan James, Delta Delta Delta; Katie Vlietstra Wonnenberg, Phi Sigma Sigma and Ann Adams, Sigma Kappa. The board election will be held during the next NPC Annual Membership Meeting in spring 2023 (date TBA). De Jong said, “While the Annual Membership Meeting is primarily a forum for transacting the business of the Conference, it is also a forum for the NPC Board of Directors to hear directly from the delegates, who are there as the voice of their member organizations. The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation believes that learning should last a lifetime and our commitment to that belief is carried out through scholarships available to members pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. Our generous donors
have made an impact in the lives of sisters across the nation and help alleviate the financial burden of obtaining a degree.
