My family has spent most of this winter at home, trying to avoid the cold and sickness surrounding us. These last few months have us looking forward to warmer temperatures, especially to the spring and summer months. I get excited when I think about summer time. Summer for my family means swimming, baseball, no schedules, sleeping in, popsicles, playing in the backyard and family time. For me, summer also includes attending Alpha Sigma Alpha’s National Convention & Leadership Conference. The opportunity to spend time with my sisters in a fun location has been a highlight every other summer for the last 20 years. My love of national convention began when I attended my first one as a collegian. I volunteered to join two other chapter sisters and our advisor for the 1998 national convention in Dallas, TX. I was eager to go because I love a good road trip, treasure spending time with my sisters and am enthusiastic about Alpha Sigma Alpha. The experience was all that I hoped it would be and more. I was in awe of every aspect of the week from the business meetings, to interacting with past national presidents, to being a part of the Sanctuary Degree Service and to celebrating the Fourth of July with my sisters. It was phenomenal to interact with women who were at different stages of their membership. I met women from other chapters who I instantly connected with, sharing ideas and experiences. My first convention was significant as it showed me that membership was more than four years and Alpha Sigma Alpha was so much bigger than my chapter at Emporia State University. It also sparked a passion in me to connect with my sisters in this way as much as possible. So much so that I have not missed a convention since going to that first one in 1998! Every convention I have attended has been unforgettable, each has brought a unique experience. From learning the correct way to address alumnae from Sidney Allen (“knee or nay, but never nigh”) to announcing our partnership with Girls on the Run with

its founder, Molly Barker, to reuniting with my fellow leadership consultants when I became national president…each memory has left a lasting impression in my life. I fully expect Rise, our upcoming national convention & leadership conference in Phoenix, AZ, this July, to be no different. It will personally be momentous as it will be my last one as national president, but it also will be a milestone for Alpha Sigma Alpha as it is our 50th national convention. One of the coolest things about national convention is that it is the largest gathering of Alpha Sigma Alpha women- with more than 500 sisters in attendance. Together this summer we will: ngage in fabulous workshops and participate in a hands-on E service opportunity. Celebrate the milestones and accomplishments of the Sorority and look forward to the future by unveiling our new strategic plan for 2018-22. Recognize the shining stars in Alpha Sigma Alpha as we honor individuals, chapters and past leaders. Make history as we install the leaders of our organization, officially present the newest chapters with their charters and make changes to the national bylaws. You will not want to miss this life-changing experience. The speakers will be energizing and ritual services will be inspiring. There is no better reminder of why you are member of this amazing organization. Plan to join me as we create memories and Rise in Phoenix! In ASA,

Tau Tau Chapter at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS

The Tau Tau Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was reinstalled on Nov. 4, 2017, at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. The installation festivities started with a sisterhood breakfast that was held at the university. The communications committee read congratulatory notes from members across the nation to the newly formed chapter. Following the breakfast, the charter members participated in the Sanctuary Degree Service and the Service for the Installation of a New Chapter. The women from Eta Eta Chapter at Pittsburg State University, KS, served as their sponsors.

In the evening, Tau Tau Chapter had their installation banquet at Smoky Hill Country Club. The women were joined by family and friends to celebrate their successes and accomplishments. The keynote speaker at the banquet was Teresa Clounch, Ph.D., assistant vice president for student affairs and student life at Fort Hays State University. Dr. Clounch, a sorority woman herself, shared her personal sorority experience and the amazing opportunities and skills that Tau Tau Chapter women will receive from being a part of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The night ended with the chapter receiving various gifts from the national organization and the unveiling of the charter.

REINSTALLATION: Alpha Sigma Alpha is not new to Fort Hays State University’s campus. The original Tau Tau Chapter was installed on March 17, 1928, and was closed in 1958. As Fort Hays State University’s campus is exponentially growing and thriving, Alpha Sigma Alpha decided to pursue the school once again.

Iota Zeta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was installed on Nov. 18, 2017, at Cleveland State University, OH. The weekend celebration took place at the university and the historical Cleveland Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, OH. Nearby collegiate and alumnae members came to celebrate the initiation of 34 women and the installation of the newest chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Chapters in attendance included Epsilon Theta Chapter, The Pennsylvania State University at Erie-Behrend, Theta Tau Chapter, Capital University, OH, Gamma Psi Chapter, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and

the Theta Omega Chapter, University of New Haven, CT. Vice President of Student Affairs Boyd Yarborough, Ph.D., delivered a keynote address during the installation banquet. Dr. Yarborough addressed current events within the fraternal community and offered a challenge to the newest members of Alpha Sigma Alpha. This challenge was to continue the legacy of excellence of Alpha Sigma Alpha and Cleveland State University by being women of poise and purpose. He encouraged the women to take the lead in making the right choices and making a positive impact on campus and in the community. The night was filled with recognition, congratulations and celebration.

I have always been passionate about politics and government. I believe that my generation, most importantly, must be educated on issues happening in our country and around the world. It's amazing how laws and legislation trickle down to affect our daily lives yet a lot of people remain uninformed. Many people tend to complain about what is happening with the price of higher education, increase in interest rates for student loans, increase in federal and property taxes, etc. Yet when called upon to run for local government, most will say no. It is crucial, especially for women, to be more vocal in their communities and truly stand up for what they believe in, no matter the political affiliation. I have learned over the past few years from my local involvement that millennials' ideas and complaints, no matter their political affiliation, are nearly always the same. I strongly believe that millennials working together will bring solutions to a lot of today's issues.

Epsilon Epsilon Chapter Centennial 100 years at Emporia State University, KS BY LISA STEPHENSON FERO, EE

On Nov. 17, 1917, Ida Jewitt, national vice president and Minnie Shockley, national ritualist, conducted initiation services for 19 women at Kansas State Normal School, creating the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter. A hundred years later on November 10-12, 2017, more than 400 alumnae members returned to Emporia State University to celebrate the chapterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centennial anniversary celebration. The weekend began with high pitch squeals as members from all generations reunited at

the Friday night alumnae reception. House tours were available and many alumnae took selfies with past roommates and their old composite photos. Campus tours were also available and many attended a tailgate and football game.

Fun Facts In the past 100 years, Epsilon Epsilon Chapter has: initiated more than 2,200 members, had 85 alumnae members fill 230

Kimleigh Smith, EE, served as the mistress of ceremonies at the Saturday night banquet. This banquet gave attendees a time to listen to stories from each decade and reenact chants and songs from their time as collegians. The evening also included a time to recognize nineteen alumnae members who were celebrating 50 years or more of membership with the Fifty-Year Recognition Service.

Zeta Zeta Chapter, University of Central Missouri Jennifer Hermanson, ZZ, was recognized as the female George H. Charno Outstanding Undergraduate Award winner at the University of Central Missouri in spring 2017. This award signifies the top female undergraduate student of the graduating class. The recognition signifies one’s service to the university and community, leadership experience and overall character. Jennifer served as a service day site leader for Homecoming and the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration student community service days, a student ambassador, orientation leader and alumni ambassador, as well as involvement with several non-profit organizations. She also served as vice president of accountability for the Panhellenic Executive Council, project manager for Enactus, chief of operations for the Alumni Ambassadors and vice president of programming & ritual for Alpha Sigma Alpha’s Zeta Zeta Chapter.

Epsilon Epsilon Chapter, Emporia State University Kelly (King) Heine, EE, has recently been named the new chief marketing officer at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS. The Marketing and Media Relations department at Emporia State oversees the university’s website and social media channels, provides photography and graphic design services on behalf of the institution and for campus departments and works with local, state and national media. A significant project for the department each year is designing the campaign for ESU’s student recruitment efforts. “I fell in love with ESU as a prospective student, and now I am even more impressed with the incredible amount of positive momentum happening within both the university and the city of Emporia,” Heine said. “I’m thrilled to be able to share how special the Emporia State University community truly is!”

Zeta Tau Chapter, Grand Valley State University Carianne Okopski, ZT, is the founder and current co-leader of I AM THAT GIRL on the campus of Grand Valley State University, MI. I AM THAT GIRL is an organization that helps women transform self-doubt into self-love. On the campus of GVSU this is done by providing a safe space to connect and have honest conversations about topics that matter to them such as finding their passion, knowing their purpose, self-confidence, relationships, fears, struggles, beauty, body image, mental health and more.
