Convention 1990 Convention -

Local Convention Chairman Judy Hart (left) and Nati onal Conventi o n Chair 路 man Lindy Steeves " share the magic '" of Alpha Sigma Tau .

Alpha Sigma Tau held its 28th National Convention at the Hyatt Hotel in Richmond , Virginia June 27- 30, 1990. Our new national expansion and rush theme " Share the Magic" was also the Convention theme . We had the opportunity to do a little star-gazing at the Hyatt : Actress Michelle Pfeiffer and actor Chuck Connors were both staying at the hotel while filming a movie in Richmond . Sharing the magic at this Convention were four past National Presidents: Carrie Staehle, Elizabeth Wilson , Sybil King , and Gail Fowler. Several other past National Council members were in attendance and many alumnae dropped in for one or two days. The Convention activities were kicked off with the Na tional Staff Luncheon on Wednesday, June 27. The speaker for the luncheon was Mary Louise Doyle, past NPC Delegate . Mrs . Doyle shared the magic of her experiences over the past 60 years with Alpha Sigma Tau. To further honor Mrs. Doyle, the establishment of the Mary Louise Doyle Scholarship was announced at the luncheon . A gift was presented to Sybil King to thank her for volunteering extended hours at National Headquarters , and the new National President's pin was presented to Patricia Nayle. The President 's Pin is an IT badge set with diamonds mounted on a gold disk. This pin will be worn by the incumbent National President and passed on to each succeeding president. At the Opening Session Wednesday evening, the program for the week " Accomplishing Sisterhood through Teamwork" was announced. The National Chairmen in the Fraternity Programs area , led by Director of Fraternity Programs Sybil King and National Rush Director Missy Parks, were responsible for coordinating this effort . Team Leaders , representing various areas of the chapter and National organization , had been chosen prior to Convention . The " Tau Teams" were introduced at a mock exec utive board meeting on Thursday. 4

Share The Magic! Other highlights of Wednesday evening included the alumna affiliation of Jeanne Knaus, mother of Beth Knaus , National Housing Director. At the General Session on Thursday, June 28, we were honored with a speech by Carrie Staehle, President Emerita . Mrs. Staehle spoke about each of AST's nine National Presidents and named a quality that was unique to each woman. She also reviewed the qualities that our tenth National President will need in order to perform her duties successfully. On Thursday, the Queen 's Luncheon was held . Our judges were Jeff Hill , staff meteorologist at WWBT-TV in Richmond; Tom Talley, father of an Alpha Lambda collegia te member; and Scott Torok, Director of Public Relations for the Richmond Braves baseball team . They had the difficult task of choosing one winner and two runners-up from candidates representing 27 collegiate chapters. The winners were selected for their academic , social , leadership , and team spirit achievements . Laura Turley, Beta Iota , was chosen as the 1990 Convention Queen . Th e runners up were Beth Gilbert , Gamma Lambda , and Apri l Mulholland , Beta Mu . Later that evening , Jeff Hill mentioned Alpha Sigma Tau twice during his portion of the evening news broadcast' Time was set aside Thursday afternoon for each Tau Team to finalize planning the activities and programs for the Share and Show Presentation , to be held on Friday evening . Leaders shared some of their ideas and plans as to what the team was going to accomplish for Friday night's activity. Leaders asked for input on the topic by the team and brainstormed ideas on implementing the presentation . At the same time , representatives from other teams were assigned to assist as needed , thus dem onstrating the concept of using all the chapter's re sources. A mock collegiate business meeting was held next , using the normal business meeting agenda and a Team (committee) report from each area. The need to conduct detailed discussion in the committees and to

keep the business meeting brief was illustrated by using this approach. Thursday evening we boarded buses for a tour of Richmond 's historic district. We traveled down beautiful Monument Avenue and saw the many monuments to Confederate-era heroes , and continued past the Governor 's Mansion and state government buildings. Shopping and eating were on the agenda before our return to the hotel. On Friday, the Alumnae Luncheon was held . Sally Wales, Director of Alumnae, announced the 1990 Alum nae Top Taus and recognized alumnae chapter presidents and Chapter CREST Editors . At the close of the luncheon , each table presented a drawing demonstrating their perception of the " magic" of Alpha Sigma Tau. These drawings were put together in a book. On Friday afternoon and evening, we had a wonderful time with the Tau Team Show and Share presentations. The first one was by Julie Bruington 's Scholarship Team . Earlier that day , each person selected a colored sticker - we later found out these represented our GPA! Everyone was rewarded with a certain number of pieces

Share The Magic! of candy based on their GPA. Next , we saw a short rush party presented by Missy Parks's Rush Team . Janice Fitch 's Financial Team covered the importance of planning a budget and demonstrated the need to plan in detail the finances for rush programs. Carol Ficeti 's Collegiate/ Alumnae Relations Team put together items for a newsletter to the alumnae . Reporting next was Cynthia McCrory and Carolyn Al exander's Panhellenic Team . This group decided to hold a " Faculty Appreciation Month " and reviewed the steps necessary to implement this idea , as well as types of activities to include. The Philanthropic Team , led by Marty DeCamp, demonstrated so me wonderful ideas for projects to be performed in the community and activities for nationa l philanthropic endeavors . Terry Dudley 's Publicity Team made posters for the Rush Party, helped publicize the Music Team 's Song Competition , and reviewed ideas for positive PR spots . The next hour was a lot of fun for everyone - Arlin e Clark and Karen Roof led the Music Team in a District Song Competition . Everyone was involved, since each District was made up of both collegiate and alumnae chapters who had practiced a song together and then performed it for the audience. Emi ly Mcintire's History Team demonstrated methods for putting together the chapter scrapbook . The Ritual Team, led by Lucy Younce, performed the beautiful " Tau Cross" Ceremony, which has been used at rush parties . Next , Beth Knaus and her Housing Team used a skit to demonstrate the need for proper inventory and the importance of insurance. The Pledge Team was led by Sherry Gentile and demonstrated the importance of having a well-planned pledge program. The Courtesy Team , under the guidance of Pat Nichols , showed everyone the proper way to plan and implement a National Staff visit. Ann Marie Girardot 's Memb ership Development Team had several roles. They planned a picnic supper and involved everyone in sorting the trash at the picnic

At the end of the evening , they also led the whole group in several activities to demonstrate different aspects of sorority life and to bring each team closer. On Saturday, June 30, the formation of a National Board of Trustees was announced . This Board will be comprised of the past National Presidents and other past National Council members not currently holding another office . On Saturday afternoon we " roughed -it" through a three-hour blackout! Electrical power had been knocked out in a large portion of the Richmond area due to an auto accident. Fortunately the power came back on as we were about to elect the following new officers: Ricki Trosen , National Vice President; Karen Sloan , National Secretary; Janet Jimison , National Treasurer ; Mary Charles Ashby, Director of Collegiate Chapters; Elizabeth Babroski , Director of Expansion ; and Carol Cooper, Director of Publications . Capping the Conven tion activities was the Awards Banquet on Saturday night. The Convention Chorus, led by Arline Clark, National Music Chai rman , treated us to a selection of old and new AIT songs. Awards were presented (see listing following this article) by members of the National Staff, and the new Elizabeth Wilson/ Dorothy Bennett Rob inson Scholarship was introduced by the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter. At the close of the banquet, the location of the 1992 Convention was announced by several a lumnae singing their rendition of " Oklahoma " - a fitting song , since the Co nvention will be held at the Sheraton Kensington in Tulsa , Oklahoma, June 23-27 , 1992 . National Rush Director Melissa Friesen Parks (Mrs . Clinton), Beta Xi , contributed to this article .

Gamma Lambda - Kutztown University of Pennsylvania by Anne Curran Gruber (Mrs. James). Alpha. National Colony Adviser On April 28, 1989, twenty-five women students at Kutztown University signed a petition stating that they realized the advantages of membership in a national sorority and wanted to become affiliated with Alpha Sigma Tau . They had been members of a local sorority, Sigma Tau Omega , founded in 1984. Sigma Tau Omega was quite active on the Kutztown campus and community. They won third place overall in their first Greek Week . They visited the local day care center with Santa at Christmas, and at Easter held an egg hunt with a visit from the Easter Bunny. Food collected at the annual food drive was donated to Friends, Inc ., and spring cards were distributed during a visit to Kutztown Manor. The group volunteered to distribute educational pamphlets throughout the community for the American Cancer Society and visited Topton Lu theran Home to help the elderly residents with chores . When the sisters of Sigma Tau Omega contacted Al pha Sigma Tau in March 1989, Lehigh Valley Alumnae Chapter president Kathy Jo Weinert and several mem bers of the chapter traveled to Kutztown to make the presentation and answer questions about Alpha Sigma Tau . During the summer, the local group was notifi ed that their petition had been approved , and Stacy Sucro, colony president, made plans for the training and pledging to begin . Anne Gruber , National Colony Adviser, and Carole Keily, Director of Publications, arrived at Kutztown on September 16, 1989. After introductions were made , the Ribbon Pledging Service was held. Proudly wearing their green and gold ribbons , the colony sisters spent the rest of the morning learning about Alpha Sigma Tau and THE ANCHOR/Fall 1990

The next morning , the Pin Pledging Cere mony was conducted in the ballroom of Old Main. The sixteen new pledges of Alpha Sigma Tau vowed to work hard to increase their me mbership and be ready to become initiated members early in 1990. The afternoon was devoted to a reception a nd a meeting with Allison Kendall , Greek Council Advisor. Gamma Lambda Colony got started on fulfilling their pledge require ments immediately . They held rush parti es, raised money by distributing credit card applications and selling candy , distributed food fo r needy families , heard a speaker on hazing , went on a hayride with a fraternity , held a Halloween party at a daycare center, participated in a can recycling drive , held an officers' workshop , and hosted a Christmas party. In late October, Michele Nestro volu nteered to be th e group 's adviser , a nd Judy Haas began serving as the assistant adviser. Mary Ellen Willmitch made the presentation to a group of local members, the Panhellenic advisor , and collegiate and alumnae representatives of the other three sororities on campus . Primarily due to the pledged support of the Youngstown Alumnae and Miss Will mitch 's experience as a national officer (she promised to work with the group over the summer to prepare them for formal fall rush), the group chose AI:T. Alpha also worked with other Greek organizations on fundraising . The money we raised went into our chapter savings account. Alpha Chapter participated in a variety of philanthropic activities this year. One of the highlights was a visit to U of M's Mott's Children 's Hospital , where we delivered Easter eggs and baskets with the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon to the Childrens ' Wards . We gained four enthusi as ti c and hardworking women: Holly Burzynsk i, Renee Hunt, Lisa Liparulo and Maria Wahlen. On a very cold morning in February, Sigma sisters sold newspapers to help support the Children's Hospi tal. Despite the wind and snow, we managed to have a good time. We were surprised when our sisters from Potsdam came to visit. They joined us at a basketball game, went to parties and sat in on our weekly meeting . Our next exciting visitor was Director of Col legiate Chapters Mary Charles Ashby . She was able to meet most sisters for our views on sorority life. She was helpful to our chapter and I' m sure her rT spirit rubbed o ff on all of us . Another success this semester was our third annual moth er/ daughter brunch. An informative slide show , great food and a beautiful song, performed by ./ Dawn Bunger, made for a memorable afternoon . To get ready for Daytona Beac h , Sigma set out on a 10-mile walk-a-thon for multiple sclerosis. We would like to thank advisers Mari lyn Helmrath and Norma Martin for two years of hard work and dedication . They have given us much needed advice and su pport and we will miss them . Gamma Lambda

Kutztown University of PA On April 7 , 1990 , the big day arrived . After months of hard work , we were fi nally installed as a chapter! The night before, members of Gamma Lambda colony fluttered around dorm rooms a nd a partments , pressing dresses and murmuring the creed , nervous and excited about what was in store for them the next day . With National President Pat ri cia Nayle , Director of Collegiate Chapters Mary Charles Ashby, and Colony Adviser Anne Gruber coming , everything had to go smoothly. What if we did something wrong? Saturday dawned grey and snowy, but it didn ' t dampen our moods as we waited to go through ritual and finally became sisters. As the time came and sisters were taken away one by one, we a ll exchanged nervous glances . Then each one of us had our turn , and found o ut what Alpha Sigma Tau was all abo ut. It was awesome! The national staff mem bers turned out to be pretty cool women , too! Later , we all celebrated our new status as siste rs at our installation banquet. Family and friends present , and we lis-

tened to a great speech by Patricia Nayle . With tears of pride and happi ness , we had our candlelighting ceremony, and sang the Fraternity Hymn . It was a great day, and symbolized everything we've been working for during the year. We ' re proud to be sisters o f Alpha Sigma Tau , and would like to thank everyone who helped us along the way. We 'd love to hear from other chapters, especially if you have some good rush ideas. We 're looking forward to a great fall semester, hoping to make it our best one yet. - Heidi Mentzer

We held a Paren t/ Daughter Day , which included a slide presentation and two guest speakers . The February dinner with husbands and friends at the Masters Restaurant in Madison Heights was a welcome night out and a chance to meet and greet our extended family . The social evening continued at the home of Na dia Sawka Maddens who lives in the area . Collegiate chapters in Mi chigan were invited to the Mother-Daughter Lun cheon in May at the Gazebo in Warren . ERIE Is Small but Spunky The Erie Alumnae Chapter is " small but spunky " and full o f AI:T spirit' The " Fabulous Four" have been more than busy keeping up with the new Gamma Theta Chapter at Penn State Behrend. They serve as the Chapter Advisor, Assista nt Chapter Advisor and Chapter Consultant and managed to get through the installation on November 18, spring rush , initiation and the formal without a scratch! They also attended a fabulous Founders Day celebration at Alpha Tau in Edinboro. Alpha Tau was celebrating its 20 year anniversary so many of the alumnae sisters came back to take a trip down memory lane! In spring , alumnae volunteered as Neighborhood Campaign Chairpeople for the Heart Associa tion and made another contribution to the Campbell Soup label project at Living Waters Christian School. Alumnae have been so busy working that they have not had much time to play although they had dinner at a Japanese restaurant in May and several outings in the summer months with their famili es. In between all of this, Norma , Cindi and Debbie went off to Richmond in June! The fall also saw the arrival of Emily , first daughter of Chrissy Hawes Brooks. GREATER HARRISBU RG AREA Makes a Start It's not an easy job. That's what alumnae in the Harrisburg area are finding out when it comes to establishing an Alpha Sigma Tau Alumnae chapter. But no one ' s complaining . Joanna Natale Parthemore , Beta Iota , has worked very hard during the past year to peak the interests of other alumnae in the Central Pennsylvania area . Although it' s slow going, th ings are looking up . The group now has alumnae members from Beta Iota , Beta Epsilon , Zeta and Delta chapters. The first meetings were held at Colonial Country Club. Now the group meets in members' homes. At Christmas they held a dinner and party at the country club complete with gift exchange. In Janua ry, they got together for a Super Bowl party at a sister's house. The highlight of the spring was the group 's participation in the Easter Egg-Stravaganza sponsored by the Lower Paxton Township Parks and Recreation and ' the Paxton Area Jaycees . The weather was wintery but the sisters kept busy and warm by entertaining hundreds of children . In addition, the group sponsored two successful fund raisers , Tupperware and Princess House crystal. In June, the newly formed group planned an AST Senior Welco ming Party for recent college graduates or for any older sister who would like to renew ties . - Lynn Gourley-Karl

NORTHERN VIRGINIA

was important to be informed of our convention responsibilities and hold election of new officers , it was decided to move the April meeting to the first week in April. This took place at the home of Mary Louise Doyle and Nancy Voltz was co-hostess . The group had a very good representation at convention in June. Lucia Bacon was chairwoman of the Queen 's Luncheon and the chapter was responsible for the favors . They even offered to foot half of the cost of the favors- 250. A large quantity of cookies and candies were collected at this session to be sent to the Gamma Zetas at Frostburg U to help them get through exam week! We hope the " Care Package" helped ease the pains of the long study hours . Easter Week was saddened by the passing away of Dorothy Gates , Zeta , who had been a member of NVAC since its beginning. Dotty had been ill with cancer the past couple of years but still managed to be active in sorority whenever possible. She was 81. Installation of officers took place at the May meeting at the home of Diane Helbing . Edith Elliott became the new president of NVAC, replacing Lucia Bacon. Carol Mooney was co-hostess. She and Lucia did a very good job this past school year in writing the monthly newsletters which were mailed to chapter members in good standing. A picnic at The Plains, Virginia , where Mary Charles and Jack Ashby live ,

seems to have become the accepted event for June meetings! Husbands and children abound and picnic baskets are everywhere. Folks bring their own outdoor chairs and baby formulas . The beverages are provided and the food is pooled and shared by all . The " pickingup ", I'm sure , is left for the Ashbys as families and their tired , sleepy children leave for their long rides home! We end the 1989- 1990 year pleased with our accomplishments: (1) Gave our :LT National Foundation a gift of 100. Gave the same amount to Pine Moun tain Settlement. Are paying approxi mately 250 toward the cost of convention favors for the Queen 's Luncheon . Held a raffle and donated 46 to flood relief victims and earthquake victims , and donated to the same cause again through City Panhellenic. Held another collection of supplies for the House of Ruth (battered women) and brought gifts to put in stockings for teenage girls who are temporarily housed and cared for by our county . We saved coupons for Living Waters Christian School (Kentucky) and for Pine Mountain to help get the computer they need . But most important is (2) Our chapter is strong in its loyalty to Alpha Sigma Tau and the love we have for one another brings us out , month after month , to share an evening together' Blest be the tie that binds .... - Mary Louise Doyle

Accomplishments Can any other alumnae chapter boast of three " blood " sisters on its membership roll? NVAC held its first meeting of the year at the home of Edith and Betty Gail Elliott. A third sister , Meda Ray Sewell , was the main speaker of the evening . She talked about the Alpha Sigma Tau National Foundation , of which she is president. Also on the program (or it might as well have been!) was the passing around of pictures of Baby Elizabeth Keily, daughter of Carole and Tim , who was born in December. Instead of our usual Valentine Dinner on a week night, with husbands and boy fri ends , last year we tried a Sunday Brunch and called it a Friendship Celebration. It was very popular a nd different so we repeated the event this February. Same place , Charley's in Vienna' Nancy Voltz and Mary Ann West were in charge of the arrangements . Donna Deibel was scheduled to be hostess for the March meeting but a death in her husband's family , on the day of the meeting , cancelled it . Since it

Alumnae LEHIGH VALLEY Had Sweet Success Lehigh Valley alumnae tried something new this year-Easter candy-making! It was a big success! Sisters made buttercream and peanut butter centers ahead of time and everyone dipped them in chocolate at the April meeting . The enthusiasm took over and they dipped nuts , coconut , raisins , pretzels and just about everything imaginable! Bunny, lamb and hen molds were also used. All members had an assortment to take home. The Chinese Auction was held in October and the proceeds used for Pine Mountain . Each member attending made or bought something to auction off to other sisters. It makes for a fun evening. Alumnae also helped with a " Dream Come True " fundraiser for terminally ill children in May. - Julie Welter Frazier

TIDEWATER Holds Sorority Exchange In February , a sorority exchange was held with the Phi Beta Pi Alumnae Chapter. Social service projects were discussed and everyone enjoyed meeting and socializing with another Panhellenic group . On March 24, the annual Tidewater Alumnae Panhellenic Associa tion ' s Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon was held at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. New officers were installed and Gail Guthrie is now treasurer of the organization. After the fashion show, attendees were inspired to go out shopping! Educational games, books and money was donated to Samaritan House, a local home for needy families . The Ja nuary meeting , held at the home of Robbie Cool , included a fire safety education program presented by member Elayne Goode who is a fire education specialist. Alumnae learned new tips and procedures to be used around their homes . April 's meeting hostess was Gail Guthrie who was nominated as Tidewater Alumnae Top Tau . Members , excited about the National Convention , dis cussed and decided upon the Country Store items which were sold there. -Joy Robertson

YPSILANTI -ANN ARBOR Celebrates Alumnae Chapter Founding The sisters of the Ypsilanti-Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter know how to have a good time at a reduced rate. How do they know this? Well, for a second year the sisters have sold Entertainment coupon books as a fundraising activity. No coupon was needed , however, then they gathered for the spectacular slide show featuring Pine Mountain School. The sisters continued collecting Campbell soup labels to help local schools obtain gym equipment. April is a special month for this alumnae group . They celebrate their Founders Day. This year's remembrance took place with a dinner at Haab 's Restaurant in Ypsilanti. The highlight of this special occasion was the initiation of Lisa Fultz {Alpha) to the alumnae organization. Special moments in the lives of two sisters occurred since the last ANCHOR . Becky Dobson announced her engagement and Jackie Subleski was married. Along with all the festivities and hard work, they were busy , busy, busy planning for Convention. - Jackie Subleski Root

Arline Clark and Melanie Foster attended the Regional Leadership WorkNorthern Virginia alumnae Meda Ray S ewell, Betty Gail Elli ott, and Edith Elliott, left to right.

Beta Psi collegiates and St. Louis alumnae try to solve the puzzle at the Pizza Party at Maxine Graflage 's home.
