Dear Sisters,
When we say that we’re All in for Alpha Tau , we mean it. At the heart of our call to action to every member on the eve of Alpha Sigma Tau’s 125 th anniversary is the reality that the Sorority needs every Sister to reach a little bit more, invest a little bit more, and contribute a little bit more. Our collective action is critical to ensuring Alpha Sigma Tau will still be an option for college women in the future.
That’s why the Sorority has joined forces with the Foundation for Fraternal Excellence and other partners in the “Amplifying Sorority” campaign. The campaign’s premise is that we are at a crossroads to grow our communities and clearly articulate the significance of today’s sorority experience to key stakeholders.
This initiative aims to ensure sororities are positioned as THE sought-after membership opportunity and THE number one avenue for support and engagement for members throughout their lives. Each Alpha Sigma Tau Sister plays a critical role in turning this compelling and necessary narrative into reality.
The campaign includes research studies on the needs and wants of prospective female college students, and the results reinforce what we are seeing in Alpha Sigma Tau every day. One study showed that prospective college students and their caregivers prioritize academic and career outcomes but don’t realize that sororities offer leadership development, professional networking, a sense of community and belonging, and opportunities to serve others.
We need our collegians to actively explain the value of membership in Alpha Sigma Tau using this framework and our alumnae need to own and promote how their experiences in Alpha Sigma Tau became their competitive advantage in college and throughout their careers. This will lead to better outcomes in recruitment, higher retention to Initiation, higher retention to graduation, and more individual ownership of the collective Alpha Sigma Tau experience.
I underlined the study’s finding that “Sororities have what Gen Z women need (and want) - they just don’t know it yet.” This is both scary and full of possibility. The Sorority won’t reach our recruitment goal this year by waiting for 1,899 new members to find their way to Alpha Sigma Tau on their own. We have to go out and find them and give them compelling reasons to join.
Being All in for Alpha Tau means that Sisters are finding the strength to practice the ideals of Alpha Sigma Tau in our daily lives . It’s not enough to say that we are (or worse, that we were) Alpha Sigma Taus anymore. We need to turn that into action. Let’s go All In and make Alpha Sigma Tau THE experience college women want to have.

LAST ISSUE:
In our Fall 2023 issue, we explored the story of two lifelong Sisters from the Psi Chapter at James Madison University, who have maintained their connection from college to retirement – and they even had a connection before becoming Sisters!
We also featured our All In for Alpha Tau goals and asked everyone to commit to helping with just one goal that will help us strengthen our Sisterhood in 2024. We also introduced a new mental health program for collegians, included notes of thanks from Foundation scholarship winners, shared Bid Day photos, and more.
THIS ISSUE:
We are officially celebrating our 125th Anniversary! While we don’t officially turn 125 until November 4, 2024, we’re spending this entire year celebrating our Sisterhood, remembering our Founders, and honoring the longstanding legacy of Alpha Sigma Tau.
In this issue, we are recognizing all the reasons why our Sisters love AΣΤ! From moments of friendship to selfempowerment, we all have a different reason to love our Sisters and this Sorority. Flip to page 9 to read all 125 reasons why our members love Alpha Sigma Tau and each other!

Although we are celebrating our Sorority’s 125th Anniversary in 2024, we’re also approaching an exciting anniversary for The Anchor – our 100th year!
The first issue was published in June 1925! Dedicated to one of our first advisors, Effie Lyman (Alpha 1899/Eastern Michigan), it included a brief history of each chapter, updates from collegiate chapters and alumnae groups, and member directories.
In the first issue, the editors noted that our magazine is both “a pleasure and a responsibility” and asked Sisters to: Keep our information up to date. Send in items of interest. Do some original work now and then, so that we may all be able to say – “It is our best.”
Throughout its history, our Sisters have done just that. Hundreds of women have stepped up to show their support, as the magazine has been produced by volunteer editors, writers, and designers for 100 years.

ALL IN FOR ALPHA TAU
In the Fall 2023 issue, we discussed our three bold goals for the 2023-2024 year. These goals were designed to help us strengthen our Sisterhood and honor the legacy of our Founders as we begin to celebrate 125 years. Let’s review those goals and how we measured up in the Fall 2023 semester:
Welcome 1,899 new members
While we welcomed over 700 new members, we did not reach our goal of welcoming 950 new members in the fall semester. However, our chapters worked diligently to share our Sisterhood and continue to do so in the spring semester! We had 18 chapters reach campus total in the fall semester.
Congratulations to those chapters!
Ensure new members become Alpha Sigma Tau initiates
We retained 94% of new members to Initiation and welcomed them into our Sisterhood officially throughout November and December. We will continue to improve the new member experience as we work to bring that number closer to 100%!
Increase the number of collegians joining our alumnae ranks
We had over 180 graduates who became lifelong alumnae at the end of the fall semester! This semester, we have continued to work on improving the membership experience so that every woman who said “yes” to Alpha Sigma Tau on Bid Day continues to find value in, support from, and excitement about her Sisterhood.
Go All In for Alpha Tau by reconnecting with Sisters during Night to Reunite! Join Sisters across the country on April 11, 2024 as we celebrate 125 years of Sisterhood.
Check out all the events happening or plan your own by scanning the QR code!
HAVE YOU SHARED YOUR STORY YET?
In November 2023, we announced a new project to help preserve our 125-year history. And we need you to participate, if you haven’t already done so! If you received a postcard or email asking you to verify contact information, please go ahead and do so by May 17, 2024. After that, it’ll be too late!
During that phone call, you’ll be asked to share your very own AΣΤ story. As we collect your stories and the stories of your Sisters from all over the world, our team will compile them into a hardcover compilation, Our Fond Thoughts . You will then have the opportunity to purchase this treasured piece of AΣΤ history when you share your story.
This historical preservation project is unlike any project we’ve done before! Make sure your AΣΤ experience makes it into our history books, so that our Sisters can hear your account of what Alpha Sigma Tau was like in another 125 years.

SISTERS CONTINUE TO WALK FOR MEGAN MONTGOMERY
By: Amanda Cruz (Beta Omega 2018/Monmouth)Alpha Sigma Tau’s Women’s Wellness Initiative strives to empower and educate young women on how to excel in life and enrich their lives and the lives of others. One way to educate each other is through the stories of our fellow Sisters, both the bright and the dark.
In October 2023, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Gamma Gamma Chapter at the University of West Alabama and the Birmingham Alumnae Association participated in the Megan Montgomery Memorial Run/Walk for the Prevention of Domestic Violence to honor Megan and raise awareness about domestic violence.
An Alabama native, Megan Montgomery (Delta Eta 2006/Belmont) lost her life to domestic violence. Megan finished her bachelor’s degree at Belmont, earned a master’s degree, and started her career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She met her partner online. Throughout her years as a girlfriend and later wife, Megan fought for her life, freedom, and safety. Eventually, her life was taken away at the hands of her husband.
However, Megan’s spirit continues to live on among her friends, family, and supporters. Megan’s family created a foundation under her name, through which they raise awareness for domestic violence victims and continue to share Megan’s story while positively impacting the lives of others.
The Gamma Gamma Chapter learned about Megan and the event through the Birmingham Alumnae Association President Melinda Henry Oates (Gamma Gamma 1991/UWA), who also serves as Gamma Gamma’s Chapter Advisor.
“We thought that we should raise awareness about it because domestic violence happens often. Even if it’s not contact violence, verbal violence is still domestic violence, and a few Sisters have been through that personally. It hit home for us. I enjoyed doing the walk to raise awareness for women and men out there who are facing domestic violence who are still afraid to speak up and that it’s okay, that they aren’t alone in this.” –Sydney Burchfield (Gamma Gamma 2020/UWA)
Kimberly Culpepper (Gamma Gamma 2022/UWA) was the Vice President of Growth at the time and suggested that their chapter participate in the walk. From there, she and Madelyn Brasher (Gamma Gamma 2023/UWA) organized the chapter’s participation in the walk.
“I loved doing the walk; it was an amazing feeling walking with Sisters, knowing we were walking to honor one of our own. The experience made me want to do it more. I want to bring more awareness not only to Megan but also to others who have lost their lives in the same way. In the future, I hope I can do more walks, donate money to domestic violence shelters, and do whatever I can to help women who are in those situations and help families that have lost loved ones because of domestic violence.” –Kimberly Culpepper (Gamma Gamma 2022/UWA)
Madyeln posted the walk on the chapter’s social media, digitally spreading awareness and support for Megan, her family, and other victims of domestic violence. The walk greatly impacted the Gamma Gamma Chapter and taught them the importance of having a voice, being strong, and fighting for what was truly important.
“During this walk, I felt both sadness and empowerment. Knowing Megan went through something so traumatic hurts. With Megan being a Sister as well, that sadness is magnified. I felt empowered, however, because I was helping bring awareness to domestic violence. I feel like many people are unaware of the signs and take it as unimportant, which needs to change. Everyone needs to be educated on the signs and be aware of what domestic violence can look like. Being part of this walk allowed me to contribute to hopefully a new wave of awareness.”
–Madelyn Brasher (Gamma Gamma 2023/UWA)
Hearing about loved ones going through the struggle that Megan had to endure is never easy. The Sisters of the Gamma Gamma Chapter were touched by Megan’s story and learned about the effects of being in a violent domestic relationship. Megan will always be remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, and Sisters, both near and far.
SPRING RECRUITMENT IN FULL SWING
We are still working toward welcoming 1,899 new members this year as part of our All In for Alpha Tau goals. Our chapters have been hard at work with spring recruitment, and many fall-recruiting chapters are working toward campus total with continuous open bidding (COB). So far, we have welcomed almost 600 new members this semester!
MEET: LINNEA SOMMER-WEDDINGTON
Linnea’s Top 10 Life Lessons for Excellence:
Learn, give, and share something every day.
Laugh daily.
Always give 100%.
Make the hard decisions when you know it’s the right thing to do.
Always follow through on whatever you said you would do.
Saying please, thank you, and I was wrong; it goes a long way to those around you.
Give second chances.
Don’t be afraid to ask or try something.
It’s always good to remind people to take care of themselves [Linnea is a 15-year breast cancer survivor].
Remain positive, laugh, sleep, surround yourself with caring/ supportive family and friends, and make good decisions.
ALPHA PI 1978/SLIPPERY ROCK
By: Joanna Barrett (Epsilon Epsilon 2007/JWU North Miami)Linnea Sommer-Weddington, a retired Navy Rear Admiral, defines excellence in many ways. Not only did she earn the highest rank possible during peacetime in her 38 years of military service, but she has stayed active in her relationships with her Alpha Sigma Tau Sisters since graduating college in 1981.
Linnea randomly and surprisingly reunited with Susan Swartz (Alpha Pi 1979/Slippery Rock) in Misawa, Japan, in 1983, when they were stationed at the same air base. Additionally, Linnea and her Little Sister Terry Thome (Alpha Pi 1979/Slippery Rock) met and visited each other throughout the years. Upon Linnea’s return to the States from Afghanistan, Terry was there, waiting to surprise Linnea at the airport.
After reconnecting in person during Slippery Rock’s Homecoming in 2016 with 15-20 Sisters, six Sisters joined Linnea’s retirement festivities in Nebraska in September 2019. This core group of Sisters became Linnea’s unofficial “alumnae chapter,” and they now gather annually at Homecoming. They also reunited in 2021 to honor their late Sister, Barbara Gaudio Taylor (Alpha Pi 1981/Slippery Rock), who lost her fight against cancer.
LOOKING BACK OVER MY CAREER…
I would say “excellence” comes in different forms, but the bottom line is that it is not necessarily defined as success. As long as you always give 100%, try to improve over previous, similar events, make good decisions, and focus on where you are (not focusing on your next position/assignment), you will achieve excellence. The bottom line: it’s not about winning but how you play the game of life.
DURING MY DECADES OF SERVICE…
I experienced and saw positive changes that allowed women to do more things in the military. It was also nice that I received equal pay while serving in the military! When I joined the Navy in 1981, I learned about the three core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. I added Integrity, Initiative, Accountability, and Tough Decision Making over 38+ years.
ENJOYMENT TO ME HAS…
evolved over the years, depending on free time and location, but I’ve always enjoyed reading books, traveling, working out/being outside, making cards [which I’ve done now for 30+ years], and spending time with family and friends (who are sometimes better than family).
Why We Love Alpha Sigma Tau LET US COUNT THE WAYS…
With contributed reporting from Joanna Barrett (Epsilon Epsilon 2007/JWU North Miami), Amanda Cruz (Beta Omega 2018/Monmouth), Lindsay McDowall Davis (Gamma Mu 2010/WVU Tech), Kathryn McCoy (Gamma Rho 2020/Seton Hall), and Kennedy Salts (Epsilon Omicron 2014/Southern Indiana)
In 2024, Alpha Sigma Tau celebrates its 125th Anniversary! This anniversary is a huge accomplishment that speaks to the dedication of our founding Sisters and all the women who have come since to uphold the banner of AΣΤ.
WHAT INSPIRES ME ABOUT ALPHA SIGMA TAU IS THE FACT THAT IT HASN’T JUST BEEN AROUND SINCE 1899, BUT IT HAS BEEN ACTIVE, THRIVING, AND GROWING. AS A CHAPTER PRESIDENT AND SENIOR, IT’S AMAZING TO SEE NEW MEMBERS JUST STARTING TO GAIN THE PASSION FOR AΣT THAT I STILL CARRY WITH ME.
– Sally Artz (Delta Tau 2021/Oakland)
While much has changed since our 1899 founding in Ypsilanti, the reasons why our Sisters love this organization have not. In this issue of The Anchor, we’re excited to share 125 reasons why our Sisters love this Sorority – one for each year since our founding!
THE VALUES OF GRACIOUSNESS, RESPECT, INTELLECT, CONNECTIONS AND EXCELLENCE NEVER AGE. THEY ARE AS RELEVANT TODAY AS THEY WERE IN 1899! OUR FOUNDERS CREATED A TRULY AGELESS AND TIMELESS ORGANIZATION. ONE THAT CAN GROW, ADAPT, AND CHANGE, AND YET STAY TRUE TO THEIR ORIGINAL MISSION AND VISION.
– Sally Brancheau Belknap (Alpha 2000/Eastern Michigan)
I love Alpha Sigma Tau because of the lifetime friendships and relationships that transcend age, occupation, and college.
– Kathy Orrison Sharp (Alpha Alpha 1966/Ball State)
I LOVE BEING CONSTANTLY SUPPORTED BY MY SISTERS IN EVERYTHING THAT I DO.
– Leah Schmeltzer (Beta Iota 2023/ Millersville)
I love Alpha Sigma Tau because there is always a Sister who will listen to your happy and sad stories. There is always a Sister who is willing to help you with anything!
– Andrea Kumm (Delta Tau 2013/ Oakland)
The expectation of sisterhood is that you are committing to a lifetime of being faithful to AΣT. I want to make sure that other women experience the love and support I have received from our bonds of sisterhood.
– Melinda Henry Oates (Gamma Gamma 1991/UWA)
I chose Alpha Sigma Tau because I knew it was something special. I’m still proud to be a part of it and to see it still thriving and growing.
– Kathryn Campomizzi Clews (Gamma Pi 1991/Lycoming)
During recruitment, I saw and felt the true connections and friendships the Sisters shared. I was immediately welcomed into a genuine Sisterhood full of women who pushed each other to be the best version of themselves and create lifelong memories. The Sorority quickly became my home away from home.
– Anne Davey (Gamma Xi 2022/ Grand Valley)
I have many Sisters I absolutely could depend on to be there for a comforting phone call or an impromptu visit if need be. I’m so lucky to have been a part of AΣT for over 55 years.
– Bobbie Nichols (Alpha Gamma 1968/Henderson)
AΣT has given me so many opportunities, from becoming more involved on campus to forming closer connections with my peers. We all value and respect each other so deeply, and it is an incredible opportunity to surround myself with such wonderful people.
– Lucy Farnham (Epsilon Tau 2023/ Kenyon)
I joined Alpha Sigma Tau because they were some of the most respectful and intelligent women I have ever met. Making new connections and lifelong friendships has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I wouldn’t have without AΣT!
– Kennedy Pelkey (Epsilon Rho 2023/ SUNY Geneseo)
I JOINED AΣT BECAUSE I WAS SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO WOULD INDEFINITELY SUPPORT ME AND WELCOME ME INTO THEIR SISTERHOOD. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL I WILL BE ABLE TO RELY ON AND STRENGTHEN CONNECTIONS WITH THESE WOMEN, WHOM I NOW CALL MY BEST FRIENDS.
– Katherine Chaney (Epsilon Nu 2022/McDaniel)
I grew up as a competitive dancer so I was always surrounded by strong women to support me. After high school, I felt like something was missing. When I joined AΣT, I felt like I had my support back. I have so much love for every single one of my Sisters.
– Jama Cottengim (Epsilon Kappa 2023/Trine)
I joined Alpha Sigma Tau because of my strong connections and friendships with the existing Sisters. Michigan Tech was maledominated, so having a cohort of female connections in the technical community was invaluable. I created some amazing friendships that have lasted to this day.
– Pam Peterson Buitendorp (Beta Xi 1989/Michigan Tech)
What inspires me about Alpha Sigma Tau is the bond of sisterhood that continually inspires me to be a better person and to cultivate my friendships with Sisters.
– Tina Opal Velt (Alpha Lambda 1994/Radford)
As a transfer student, I desperately craved a sense of community and comfort in my new environment. Luckily, AΣT found me before I even went looking. I knew almost immediately that I had found the family I was seeking.
– Amanda Hunt (Epsilon Mu 2022/ Buffalo)
Alpha Sigma Tau has shown me the true meaning of sisterhood. I was surrounded by women whom I knew I could trust and who showed me how to be authentically myself. I don’t know where I would be today without having AΣT in my life.
– Lily Dalon (Phi 2022/Southeastern Louisiana)
No matter the time, space, or distance between us, my Sisters are always there. Whether it’s in celebration, grief, or catching up on the ordinary, we support one another. The bonds, traditions, and experiences we share through Alpha Sigma Tau are the foundation of these lifelong connections.
– Dawn Scott Lecker (Beta Delta 1993/Duquesne)
Whenever I’m down and not at my best, my Sisters will always have my back.
– Jaelyn Miller (Beta Pi 2023/Eastern Illinois)
I have learned that sisterhood can be as simple as lounging around on a weekend and as complex as facing challenging situations together. I have learned that my Sisters will support me in any decision and that our love is the simplest yet most fulfilling kind of love.
– Taylor Dawidowicz (Beta Delta 2022/Duquesne)
Sorority life has truly provided me with lifelong friendships, valuable insights, and a better understanding of interpersonal relationships. I am a different and better person because of my experiences and Sisters
– Jacqueline Wahl (Beta Xi 1981/ Michigan Tech)
I’ve made some amazing friendships. I’m part of a group of 10 people who have been friends for 26 years, and we get together every other year to catch up and have fun. We even go to visit one of our members who has multiple sclerosis (MS) and can’t travel. It’s like having a family!
– Debi McCain Pyszka (Alpha Nu 1969/Central Missouri)
I cannot tell [you] how wonderful my Sisters were when I joined Alpha Sigma Tau and truly still are all these years later. We are always there for each other. We are family, and I love them for all they do!
– Michelle Wilkie Guido (Beta Chi 1986/Ferris)
WITHOUT JOINING ALPHA SIGMA TAU, I WOULD BE MISSING SOME TRULY INCREDIBLE WOMEN AND RELATIONSHIPS FROM MY LIFE.
– Grace Touney (Alpha Psi 2021/ Northern Iowa)
I love Alpha Sigma Tau because I’ve found a group of forever friends who are always there for me!
– Ellie Buttaro (Epsilon Pi 2022/RIC)
I felt an instant connection to the Sisters. I loved how close we all were and how we were always there for each other No matter where we were on campus, we always said hi and checked in with each other. We recently celebrated our chapter’s 30th anniversary, and reconnecting with Sisters was amazing.
– Karen Pogorzelski Reinoehl (Delta Alpha 1994/Gannon)
I held every office imaginable within AΣT. Through my involvement, I learned how to take minutes, be organized, and hold people accountable. I also saw the growth of the women in the Sorority, from shy freshmen to running the show as President.
– Diana Ramirez Gonzalez (Epsilon Beta 2006/UT Rio Grande Valley)
After my Initiation, I knew I wanted to run for an Executive Committee position. I became Vice President of Member Development and was elected President a year later. These positions challenged me in new ways and promoted personal and professional growth I had never imagined. Now, I’m beginning my career as Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life at Penn State University. There is so much power in knowing that sorority experiences afford women leadership roles and positions they might not have elsewhere.
– Alicia Hawkins (Beta Epsilon 2018/ Shippensburg)
I HAVE GAINED IMMENSE LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK SKILLS DURING MY TIME IN AΣT . IT HAS TAUGHT ME SO MUCH THAT I CAN USE BEYOND MY UNDERGRADUATE YEARS AT SIUE.
– Emily Buss (Beta Eta 2021/SIUE)
I had the honor of serving as our Chapter President in 2023, and I was able to attend both Officer Academy and AΣΤ Excel. I met so many wonderful women across the country and saw firsthand how deep our Sisterhood bond runs. I’m so grateful for how many opportunities I’ve been given through Alpha Sigma Tau!
– Lydia Roop (Epsilon Kappa 2021/ Trine)
This experience has been invaluable in my career, teaching me how to work together, create processes and norms, and build relationships. It has also exposed me to strong leadership, which has enhanced my career, community, and family life. I’m so grateful for the lessons I’ve learned from my Sisters and the impact it has had on my life.
– Erika McManus Bukva (Delta Rho 2000/Chowan), Foundation Board President
Through my involvement in various National Officer roles, I had an opportunity to develop excellent leadership and communication skills, which were beneficial in the leadership positions I held in my 43 years of employment.
– Pat Nayle (Phi 1971/Southeastern Louisiana), Past National President
I love AΣT because it has allowed me to grow my leadership skills. I’m serving my second term as Chapter President of the Alpha Gamma Chapter. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences!
– Kaitlyn Byrd (Alpha Gamma 2022/ Henderson)
The Psi Chapter has helped me grow in more ways than I can count. As the Chapter President, I am excited to lead an amazing group of women. This experience will teach me so many valuable lessons. I know I will look back years from now and say, “This was the best choice I could have made.”
– Natalie Carotenuto (Psi 2021/James Madison)
I love seeing how much everyone grows in their leadership roles.
– Anna Mooney (Chi 2022/Shepherd)
AΣT inspires me to be the best version of myself. I have learned so much about myself and gained a lot of leadership opportunities, even as a freshman.
– Payton Forrest (Chi 2023/Shepherd)
BEING IN AΣT TAUGHT ME HOW TO WORK TOGETHER WITH OTHERS TOWARDS A COMMON GOAL, EVEN IF WE DIDN’T ALWAYS SEE EYE TO EYE. IT TAUGHT ME TO FOCUS ON THE GROUP’S WELL-BEING, NOT JUST MYSELF.
– Rachel Roller (Delta Pi 2013/ Oglethorpe)
One of my favorite memories was becoming a part of the Executive Committee in my first year. It was so exciting, but I quickly realized it was more than just the excitement of doing things for the chapter. It required a lot of hard work and team effort to handle the position. This experience helped me grow within the chapter and my professional career.
– Alyssa Kuboyama (Gamma Upsilon 2015/Cal State LA)
AΣT not only helped me grow as a leader but also gave me the opportunity to develop my skills in managing and leading projects. My Sisters recognized my abilities and rewarded me by voting for me for different positions and sending me to our National Convention.
– Kara Petro Montgomery (Alpha Pi 2003/Slippery Rock)
I WOULD NOT BE WHERE I AM WITHOUT ALPHA SIGMA TAU. EVERY SINGLE SOFT SKILL AND PROFESSIONAL SKILL I HAVE LEARNED HAS BEEN THROUGH EITHER A POSITION I HAVE HELD OR A CONNECTION I HAVE MADE.
– Anna Chappell (Beta Phi 2017/ PennWest California)
I learned the Robert’s Rules of Order, which has been very helpful in my professional life. I’m grateful for my experiences in Alpha Sigma Tau and the lessons I learned that have helped me in life after college.
– Rachel Sellers (Delta Eta 2004/Belmont)
My experience as a Sorority member provided me with a wellrounded experience in shaping some essential skill sets necessary in professional settings, especially as a female leader. By far, being involved in a group of diverse females and learning these skills will forever stick with me as one of my most treasured college experiences.
– Katie Lelonek Roberts (Epsilon Phi 2017/Winona State)
I have learned so much in such a short time and have been able to hold so many leadership positions I never thought possible!
– Maura Rosenberger (Alpha Pi 2022/ Slippery Rock)
My leadership skills are a direct result of my Alpha Sigma Tau experience. The opportunity to lead my peers and Sisters in various roles has helped me develop other skills such as caring confrontation, organization, networking, and teamwork. I would not be where I am personally or professionally without Alpha Sigma Tau!

– Abigail Lengyel (Delta Phi 2015/NYU)
I was Chapter President, which taught me much about teamwork and leadership. It taught me that you have to take the group’s feedback and find common ground. It also taught me how to communicate with different people and get them on board with the same idea. My advice to someone starting their journey with the Sorority would be to take the whole experience as a great learning opportunity to develop your skills and hone your leadership abilities.
– Christine Sario-Valdes (Gamma Upsilon 1993/Cal State LA)
Being a part of AΣT taught me responsibility, accountability, and how to transition from high school to college. During my time in the Sorority, I held several elected offices, including Panhellenic Delegate, and I was even President twice! It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.
– Kristina Moron Eaton (Gamma Delta 2000/UMass Dartmouth)
AΣT opened the door for me to connect with more women and gain valuable skills I use in my professional career today. I was also an advisor for the Beta Tau Chapter at UMass Lowell, and it taught me how to manage people and gain patience.
– Vyctoria Pantano Walsh (Gamma Psi 2012/Fitchburg State)

– Alexandra Wetterlin (Epsilon Xi 2012/ Gustavus)
I WAS THE FIRST ENGINEERING STUDENT IN MY GRADUATION CLASS TO SECURE A JOB AFTER GRADUATION. MY EXPERIENCE IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN THE SORORITY SET ME APART FROM MY PEERS.
– Alli Meyer (Epsilon Omicron 2015/ Southern Indiana)
Alpha Sigma Tau has taught me amazing leadership and relationship skills. I have learned an incredible amount about how to communicate, manage multiple tasks quickly, and build good relationships with my Sisters to be a better leader for them. When I started as President, I had almost zero leadership experience. Since then, I have become confident in my skills and eager to improve.
–Taylor Horan (Gamma Iota 2023/York)
Alpha Sigma Tau has brought me countless opportunities and connected me with other strong leaders who have helped me navigate professional and personal situations. I’m forever grateful for the connections I have made and truly value my Alpha Sigma Tau experience.
– Courtney Klein (Alpha Psi 2016/ Northern Iowa)
I HAVE GROWN AS A FRIEND, A STUDENT, AND A LEADER. FROM BEING A NERVOUS FRESHMAN TO BECOMING CHAPTER PRESIDENT, ALPHA SIGMA TAU HAS SHAPED ME INTO THE PERSON I’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF BEING.
– Hayley Sink (Epsilon Omicron 2022/ Southern Indiana)
I love Alpha Sigma Tau because the women are genuine. They accept me for who I am. When I was in a rough spot in college, the women lifted me up, gave me a goal to work toward, and listened when I needed it.
– Alexis Hurt-Schmitt (Alpha Psi 2018/ Northern Iowa)
Alpha Sigma Tau led to my personal growth by pushing me out of my comfort zone on a daily basis. I’ve learned how to recruit new members, express my true opinion succinctly and confidently, properly maintain relationships through difficult conversations, and to take personal responsibility for my actions as well as hold others accountable for theirs. Alpha Sigma Tau has allowed me to practice these skills frequently and has helped me to feel more confident in my ability to take action.

The Sorority is filled with women who believe in the values I have used to live my life. Alpha Sigma Tau is a phenomenal organization that supports all of its members no matter where they are in life, no matter their occupation, and no matter what.

– Jaelyn Pickering (Epsilon Gamma 2021/Georgia Southern-Armstrong)

– Annie Balocca (Delta Epsilon 2022/ Marist)
I feel I have learned a lot from my time within AΣT. I’ve learned to be kind, be a strong leader, and how to fail. I’ve learned how to ask for help, how to jump at opportunities, and how to reach up for the stars. But most importantly, I’ve learned Sisterhood is a new form of love, and it will be one that my heart will never lose.
– Kara Harvey (Alpha Lambda 2022/ Radford)
Being in AΣT has made me a better woman. As a sorority, we are all extremely supportive of each other and help each other appreciate our worth and help each other grow.

Alpha Sigma Tau taught me how to work with people of all different backgrounds and experiences. This allowed me to expand my mind and grow connections that helped me curate my values, both personally and professionally.
– Cheyenne Larmore (Gamma Epsilon 2017/SUNY Potsdam)
AΣT showed me that I am a strong woman who can conquer anything. I carry myself very professionally, and I work hard to advocate for parents who have lost custody of their children every day. I couldn’t have the strength to do that without all the skills I learned from being an AΣT.
– Danielle Hernandez (Gamma Upsilon 2016/Cal State LA)
Alpha Sigma Tau has helped me grow so much as a person, and I have made lifelong connections.
– Laura Cashner (Beta Iota 2022/Millersville)
Looking back at my time in AΣT, I grew so much as a person. I learned valuable skills like public speaking and gained confidence I also had the support of my Sisters for whatever activity I was involved in.
– Andrea Landis (Gamma Rho 2011/ Seton Hall)

Through Alpha Sigma Tau, I’ve become the best version of myself. Alpha Sigma Tau has prepared me for the real world by instilling skills that make me a better employee, coworker, and friend.
– Francie Grasso (Epsilon Sigma 2019/Bridgewater State)
Alpha Sigma Tau has made me come out of my shell completely. I have a group of forever Sisters that I know I can always count on which I’m so grateful for since I only grew up with brothers.
– Abigale Barr (Delta Zeta 2020/East Stroudsburg)
This Sorority has helped me grow both socially and personally. I’ve made so many friends within the Sorority. I can’t imagine my undergrad years at Rowan University without being a part of Epsilon Psi.
– Sullivan Leiby (Epsilon Psi 2017/ Rowan)
DURING MY TIME WITH ALPHA SIGMA TAU, I GREW INTO A BETTER PERSON. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE ON LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AND OVERCOME MY FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING. I’M SO THANKFUL FOR THIS EXPERIENCE.
– Marianne Edmonds Collin (Epsilon Alpha 2015/Embry-Riddle Prescott)
Alpha Sigma Tau instilled confidence in me to go after my dreams. No roadblock or challenge was too big to overcome and I knew I always had a Sister a phone call away when times were tough.
– Michele Pearce Mitchell (Alpha Lambda 1995/Radford)
An Alpha Pi Chapter tradition that I love is our sisterhood retreat! This retreat allows us as Sisters to grow and bond with each other. Our retreat allows each Sister to grow and discover more about themselves.
– Allison Traupmen (Alpha Pi 2022/ Slippery Rock)
[My favorite memory was when] we had to be creative with our wardrobe since female students weren’t allowed to wear pants on campus. We would put on our shorts and raincoats, and run across the street to the gym because freshmen had to take P.E. Then, we repeated the raincoats back to the dorm to put on our skirts for the rest of the day!
– Kathleen Calder (Phi 1967/ Southeastern Louisiana)
What I miss most about my collegiate experience is seeing my Sisters every day. I loved living in the same dorm with them, eating together, or having our chapter meetings. I loved living my sisterhood every day back then, and I still live my sisterhood every day now.
– Shae Woodward McLin (Phi 1993/ Southeastern Louisiana)
One of my favorite traditions in the Detroit Metro Alumnae Chapter is our Mother-Daughter Luncheon. We reserve an event space, gather as Sisters with women who are important in our lives, and share a meal. We have a candlelighting and raffle, and it’s just a great time for a group of wonderful women to gather and celebrate each other.
– Katie VanGorder (Delta Tau 2004/ Oakland)
When I was the house director, I had to make sure the food was locked up so the Sisters wouldn’t raid the kitchen late at night. We had a budget to stick to! Cathy Onion (Alpha Epsilon 1982/ Western Illinois) showed me the coveted can of nacho cheese and told me to protect it with my life. It was the most sought-after item in the house, which I found hilarious. I can still picture myself standing at the door, telling the Sisters they couldn’t have any.
– Michelle Albrecht Canada (Alpha Epsilon 1991/Western Illinois)
I’m so grateful to have been a part of AΣΤ during my college years. I felt like I belonged somewhere and was accepted for who I was. We helped at a local school with art projects and mentoring the kids… it was a great way to give back to the community.
– Katey Sopper Saffer (Alpha Lambda 1991/Radford)
LIVING IN A HOUSE WITH TWO OF MY CLOSEST SISTERS WAS A FUN EXPERIENCE BECAUSE OUR HOUSE WAS ALWAYS FILLED WITH SISTERS AND EVENTS. ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS WAS BEING ABLE TO WALK INTO THE STUDENT CENTER AND ALWAYS SEE A TABLE OF SISTERS, NO MATTER WHO IT WAS. AFTER GRADUATING, I REALIZED THE TRUE VALUE OF THE FRIENDSHIPS I MADE IN THE SORORITY.
– Jackie Ferriso Miller (Beta Omega 2015/ Monmouth)
My favorite chapter tradition was the new member Initiation Ceremony. It always reminded me of what AΣΤ means and why I love it so much. Every time there was a big-little reveal, it still made me so happy and excited because it showed that you are loved and belong, and these Sisters will always be here for you.
– Ashley Barill Smith (Beta Theta 2010/St. Mary’s)
I always think of living in Caraway Hall with my chapter Sisters. On the AΣΤ floor, we had something special. While we were already sharing an empowering support system, the connection was very intentional. There was always someone to talk to, someone to grab a meal with, and everyone was always welcome.
– Addie Beckham (Beta Rho 2017/Arkansas Tech)
I was initiated with only nine Sisters, but by the time I finished my presidency, we had doubled our numbers to 45. We had a lot of fun together, like our annual formal. We also had etiquette lessons that I still think about today. I had a great support system and learned a lot of lessons that I still use in my adult life. It’s an amazing experience that filters into real-world life, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
– Olivia Johnson Frangiosa (Delta Sigma 2001/Saint Joseph’s)
One chapter tradition I love and cherish the most is Work Week, specifically our “fun day.” This day includes dancing, bouncy houses, snow cone stands, and more! We use this week to be with each other, learn about recruitment, and do different fun activities with our Sisters!
– Macy Landry (Upsilon 2021/Central Arkansas)
My fondest memories were our sisterhood activities, such as trivia games. We also gave back to the community, from working in the homeless shelter to roadside cleanups. I made some amazing friendships with whom I’m still close today.
– Sarah Hinshaw (Delta Nu 1999/Beloit)
I had such an amazing experience with AΣT during my time in college. One of the highlights was being our chapter’s secretary and leading the Miss IUP scholarship pageant, the largest event on campus. It gave me valuable leadership skills and the opportunity to raise funds for local nonprofits.
– Bonnie Burns Murray (Delta 1991/IUP)
Our big-little reveal is a chapter tradition I will always love. It is a special moment to be part of and to watch how happy Sisters are to create such a strong bond with one individual who is there to help guide you through Alpha Sigma Tau. Each big-little event is emotional, empowering, unforgettable, and full of love.
– Ashlyn Kupcho (Epsilon Psi 2022/ Rowan)
I WAS ONE OF EIGHT WOMEN WHEN I JOINED, AND IT WAS A GREAT FEELING TO BE PART OF SOMETHING THAT WAS SO SMALL BUT HAD SUCH A BIG IMPACT. WE WERE ALL DEDICATED TO OUR ACADEMICS AND SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
– Carol Crowe Lesko (Beta Eta 1987/SIUE)
Alpha Sigma Tau made my college experience at Longwood so much fuller. It helped me come out of my shell, meet people, and try new experiences. We would have weekly dinners, go to events, Color Wars, basketball games, concerts, and more.
– Nikki Walsh (Zeta Tau 2007/Longwood)
I joined in my junior year and was able to help triple the size of the Alpha Lambda Chapter. We had a great time planning the 60th alumnae celebration, which included the National President, the university president, and women from each decade covering a core value. Having them all celebrate our 60 years was really special.
– Olivia Hilton (Alpha Lambda 2011/ Radford)
We had a large chapter of about 170 members, and we never failed to find a fellow Psi out on Ped Plaza by Carrier Library. This was an important gathering place where we could meet new Sisters, build relationships, and learn from each other. Alpha Sigma Tau provided me with a sense of belonging and community at a large institution.
– Jamie Jones Miller (Psi 1995/James Madison), National President
We would support and welcome one another with door hangers. It was always comforting to open your door and receive encouraging and supportive words from one of your Sisters.
– Susan Zilka Swartz (Alpha Pi 1979/ Slippery Rock)
The Alpha Lambda cabin parties come to mind as they were such a bonding experience. I also very much appreciated having a big Sister who was such a help to me in my journey through AΣT. The closeness I formed with my other Sisters was so special and I continue contact with some of them today, even 50+ years later.
– Sue Wingfield Turner (Alpha Lambda 1968/Radford)
While at James Madison University, I was Psi Chapter’s representative to the Panhellenic Council and enjoyed connecting with members of other sororities on campus. Several Psi Sisters and I have remained close over the years, even more so after reconnecting when we attended our 50th Class Reunion in 2016.
– Faye Pleasants (Psi 1963/James Madison)
One of the most memorable events was our family dinner. I had the opportunity to cook four turkeys for the first time, which was a great learning experience. I had help from my Sisters, who had never cooked a turkey before, and we also had to call our moms and grandmothers for advice. It was a challenge, but we got it done!
– Christine Brooks Taitt (Zeta 1999/Lock Haven)
[My favorite memory] was when I had just finished a Greek Week pie-eating contest, which I won, and I decided to enter the jump rope contest, and I won that too! I was surprised I could do it with a full tummy. I guess it was a good balance of eating and exercising!
– Joanie Whitener Ring (Beta 1960/Central Michigan)
ONE OF MY FAVORITE AΣT MEMORIES WAS ATTENDING THE 35 TH ALPHA SIGMA TAU NATIONAL CONVENTION IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, IN 2004. I WAS THE HISTORIAN THAT YEAR AND WON FIRST PRIZE FOR MY SCRAPBOOK. IT WAS SUCH AN INCREDIBLE TRIP, GETTING TO MEET SISTERS FROM ALL OVER AND BOND WITH THEM. WE EVEN DROVE FROM CHICAGO TO SAVANNAH, WHICH WAS QUITE AN ADVENTURE.
– Amber Stubis Richardson (Delta Delta 2003/UIC)
Philanthropy was my “why
AΣT ” I was the philanthropy chair for the Beta Tau Chapter. We volunteered at a local shelter for domestic violence, making arts and crafts that the children gave to their moms for holidays. We also sponsored a local highway mile to help the environment and advertise our chapter.
– Cristy Davidson Rosenhahn (Beta Tau 1993/UMass Lowell)
I joined AΣT to feel a sense of belonging and connectedness with my campus community. I also wanted to get involved in service work and empower other women!
– Ileina Vroman (Alpha 2022/Eastern Michigan)
AΣT is devoted to empowering and enriching the lives of women. This rings true for my experience, as I would not be the successful, empowered woman I am today without my Sisters’ constant love and support!
– Katie Mellos (Beta Mu 2016/Salisbury)
I connected with the Women’s Wellness Initiative during recruitment, so choosing AΣΤ was easy. I am honored to serve as Chapter President now and give back to the organization that gave its all to me.
– Skylar Eshleman (Gamma Lambda 2022/Kutztown)
AΣT HAS TAUGHT ME THAT I CAN MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE WORLD FOR OTHER WOMEN BY VOLUNTEERING, DONATING, AND ATTENDING EVENTS.
AΣT HAS TAUGHT ME THAT THE WORLD IS FILLED WITH CARING, LOVING WOMEN WHO SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN TO THE FULLEST EXTENT POSSIBLE.
– Jessica Langkamer Quinones (Delta 1992/IUP)
I love our annual fall Rock-AThon, where we sit outside our campus library for 24 hours raising money for Roads to Peace, our local philanthropy. We look forward to this event because we get to raise money for our local philanthropy, bond with one another, and create long-lasting memories.
– Hannah Parmenter (Zeta 2022/Lock Haven)
One of my favorite memories was doing community service at Habitat for Humanity. It was so fulfilling to use our skills to help someone in need.
– Kate McDonald (Epsilon Lambda 2014/IU South Bend)
I wish people knew how seriously we take our philanthropies – the Women’s Wellness Initiative and our local philanthropies. Our local philanthropy, Jump for Olivia, is very special to us all as it honors one of our Sisters who passed away, creates awareness for her medical condition, and raises funds for the Olivia Noel Scholarship Fund.
– Isabella Keyes (Delta Theta 2022/ Moravian)
AΣT HAS TAUGHT ME THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVICE. WHILE I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED VOLUNTEERING, AΣT INSPIRED ME TO BROADEN MY HORIZONS IN WHERE I SERVE AND EMBRACE ALL THE CONNECTIONS I MAKE WITHIN MY COMMUNITY.
– Kayla Gentry (Epsilon Lambda 2023/IU South Bend)
AΣΤ taught me so much. We had responsibilities, philanthropy, and teamwork we always needed to do. It helped me understand a purpose-driven life and the importance of being involved and committed to organizations for friendship, community, and direction.
– Jordan Stearns (Delta Psi 2009/JWU Denver)
From the moment I arrived at Radford, I was drawn to the Sisters in their emerald green and gold, always helping others. The service component of our Sorority was what attracted me the most. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and I was fortunate to have the support of my Sisters.
– Lynn Sullivan Hess (Alpha Lambda 1972/Radford)
Our chapter was involved in a lot of philanthropy activities. We hosted Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and also raised money for the local Cynthia Milk Fund to help women who couldn’t afford formula for their babies. We had a lot of fun making crafts and decorations and planning events to raise awareness and money for these causes.
– Mandi Pitt-Reed (Delta Chi 2005/ Christian Brothers)
We did service projects to empower other women, such as hosting a clothing donation drive with Dress for Success and creating Easter baskets for families at a shelter in Erie, PA. It was so nice to help other women and children and make those connections in the community.
– Natalie VanLaningham (Alpha Tau 2015/PennWest Edinboro)
When I joined AΣT, the women were so lovely and welcoming. We did a lot of charitable work and community events, such as our charity balls and working with organizations like Dress for Success. I can’t even pick one event that stands out because they were all great.
– Emily Kirk (Beta Upsilon 2016/NJIT)
We were all passionate about community service. Looking back, I’m most grateful for the values that were instilled in me. They helped me become the entrepreneur and business owner I am today.
– Elizabeth Scalzo (Epsilon Theta 2019/ Fairleigh Dickinson)
I joined AΣT because of the Women’s Wellness Initiative. We took part in a lot of charity and community events. I’m so thankful for the Sisterhood’s impact on my life. I truly left [college] a better person with amazing lifelong friends!
– Madison Hadrava (Epsilon Chi 2019/ Minnesota Duluth)
THE SORORITY GAVE ME DIRECTION AND FOCUS TO WORK FOR MY COMMUNITY WHILE AT COLLEGE, A LIFELONG PART OF MY FABRIC THAT COULD HAVE GONE UNDER-UTILIZED DURING THOSE YEARS. IN RETURN, I GAINED EXPERIENCE WORKING WITHIN A STRUCTURED ORGANIZATION AND DEVELOPED WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIPS THAT I RETAIN TO THIS DAY.
– Windy Seay Crutchfield (Psi 1991/James Madison)
My chapter Sisters are teachers and counselors, work in corporate and non-profit positions, and serve in military reserves. The Sisters I have met serve in government positions, work in hospitals and at universities, and belong to community and school organizations. They are attorneys, corporate leaders, and stay-athome moms. All are leaders who provide inspiration in various ways and bring that experience and knowledge to AΣΤ.
– Kris Haskin (Beta Pi 1987/Eastern Illinois)
I love Alpha Sigma Tau because this organization is made for women to support other women.
– Sadie Pawluck (Delta Zeta 2021/East Stroudsburg)
BEING A PART OF AΣT HAS HELPED ME TO LIVE LIFE BY LOOKING AT THE BIGGER PICTURE. IT TAKES PRACTICE AND PATIENCE TO CONSCIOUSLY MAKE
DECISIONS THAT DON’T JUST IMPACT YOURSELF, BUT HOW YOUR DECISIONS CAN IMPACT OTHERS.
– Nicki Stanley (Delta Beta 2007/ Fairmont State)
I was the Community Service Chair. This experience helped me give back to the community and work in the community, which I’m [still] doing now. It was an amazing experience, and I’m so grateful for it.
– Danielle Schulman (Epsilon Rho 2015/ SUNY Geneseo)
On campus, we were known for our philanthropic work. On Halloween, we began trick-ortreating for canned goods and would be able to donate hundreds of food items to charities. Over twenty years later, the chapter still participates in that annual service project.
– Stephanie Lezotte (Gamma Tau 1999/ Lebanon Valley)
I chose AΣT because the chapter cared about being active and engaged in the campus community. We had a lot of fun together, whether watching movies or participating in community service events. One of my favorite events was volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and fundraising for Pine Mountain Settlement School. – Rebekah Policoro Kovarik (Beta Xi 1999/Michigan Tech)
I have so many fond memories, but one that stands out is a service project we did. We delivered food to an underprivileged family and also had children come to our chapter house, where I read them a story I wrote called King Tutti Turkey. It was a great way to give back to the community and bond with my Sisters.
– Suzanne Underwood Rhodes (Psi 1970/James Madison)
My time in AΣT empowered me in many ways. We worked with children in need, which gave me experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It also confirmed that teaching was my calling and opened my eyes to the fact that teachers are more than just lessongivers; they teach life lessons, too.
– Carol Shober Lewis (Alpha Xi 1969/ Mansfield)

SUPPORTING INDIVIDUAL & CHAPTER-BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
On January 6, over 450 incoming Executive Committee officers attended our annual virtual Officer Academy! This program is funded by the Alpha Sigma Tau Foundation, as it provides professional development and leadership skill-building opportunities to our collegiate members.
During Officer Academy, collegiate officers learn leadership skills such as:
• Project management and delegation
• Conflict and caring confrontation
• Adaptive problem solving
• Accountability to themselves and to others
They also have the opportunity to hear leadership advice, tips, and tricks from other officers, advisors, and alumnae members.
This cornerstone event, in addition to virtual courses and other training sessions, helps our officers transition into their new roles. In turn, those officers are then able to support and guide their chapter through successful recruitments, member events, fundraising initiatives, and more.
At the same time, Officer Academy prepares our members for life after graduation, providing skills and positions they can list on resumes and discuss in job interviews. Thank you for supporting our collegiate Sisters as they learn the skills necessary to navigate life!
THE FUTURE OF OUR HISTORY: A MUSEUM FOR ALPHA SIGMA TAU
As we celebrate 125 years of Sisterhood this year, Alpha Sigma Tau and the Foundation are working hard to preserve the past so that our future Sisters can appreciate it.
This effort includes launching our very own digital museum! Gone are the days of archives stored in cardboard boxes in someone’s basement or composites locked away in a storage unit for no one to enjoy.
Our digital museum allows you to explore both chapter and National history, learn more about important Alpha Sigma Tau women, visit our Convention exhibit, and see how Alpha Sigma Tau stacks up against world history on our global timeline.
Visit the digital museum now and start learning more about Alpha Sigma Tau:
This archives preservation project is only possible because of the generous support of the Alpha Sigma Tau Foundation and its donors. You are an integral part of preserving AΣΤ history!
If you would like to support the preservation of the Alpha Sigma Tau archives, make a gift today. Your gift will help the Sorority digitize, preserve, and store items from the past 125 years, and will give future generations of Sisters a deeper understanding of our organization.
Make a gift by scanning here:
Dear Sisters,
Although we are only a few months into 2024, it feels like time is flying by! Soon, hundreds of Sisters will gather at the 45th National Convention to celebrate 125 years of Alpha Sigma Tau.
Did you know that our Sorority is older than cornflakes, crayons, and crossword puzzles? It is! But it wouldn’t be the transformative organization it is today without the decades of women who gave their time, talent, and treasure to guarantee the future of Alpha Sigma Tau. Celebrating 125 years is the perfect time to remember all the women who made it possible.
While much has changed since 1899, our mission remains the same: to instill the skills necessary for women to navigate life. That’s where the Alpha Sigma Tau Foundation comes in. Our donors support vital programs, initiatives, and archival projects that improve our membership experience, give our members lifelong skills, and enhance the Sorority’s legacy.
On the left, you’ll see an envelope for submitting a donation. By donating to the Foundation today, you’ll be making an impact on the Sisters of tomorrow. You had Alpha Sigma Tau to call home thanks to the generosity and support of Sisters who came before you – now, it’s your turn. A gift of any size makes a huge difference in the lives of our Sisters.
Speaking of the impact of Sisters who came before us, I’ve been thinking of the Elliott sisters, all members of the Omicron Chapter at Concord University.
These Sisters conducted the first national fundraising efforts at a Convention, where they handmade yellow roses that could be attached to attendees’ name badges. All the Elliotts asked in return was a small donation to support Sorority programming.
Now, we keep that tradition alive by offering an in-person and virtual Yellow Rose Garden. You can send stickers to Sisters - whether attending Convention or not! - with a note of friendship while donating to the National Foundation. This is my favorite Convention tradition and demonstrates what makes our Sorority special: gratitude for fellow Sisters. Yellow Rose Stickers will be available for purchase soon at astconvention.org. For Sisters who won’t be joining us at Convention, it’s a meaningful way to connect across the miles!
Thank you for supporting the Alpha Sigma Tau Foundation. We’re excited to see our donors, Sisters, and friends in Portsmouth/Norfolk and incredibly honored to help celebrate 125 years of Alpha Sigma Tau!
In Sisterhood and Gratitude,

“It is really important to me that women have a robust support system that they can count on throughout life, and that’s what I have with Alpha Sigma Tau. I am a Legacy Society member because I want to ensure that the women who come after me have that same support system. The Sisters you meet through Alpha Sigma Tau will be there for you through good times and bad. I have so many wonderful memories celebrating all that life has to offer with my Sisters, and I believe in supporting the organization so it can continue to provide these connections to future generations of members.”

ON CAMPUS: COLLEGIATE UPDATES
PHI
SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA
The Phi Chapter had a successful spring recruitment, welcoming ten new members to our wonderful Sisterhood!
In February, we held our Project Prom Philanthropy Event, where we were able to donate dresses, shoes, and accessories to deserving high school girls in our community for their proms and give them a boutique-like experience. Each girl came into our home to experience their own Cinderella moment of picking out a complete prom outfit for free!
ALPHA PI
SLIPPERY ROCK
We just welcomed 13 new members into the Epsilon Iota class. We are currently hosting a Cornhole Tournament and wristband sale in support of a Sister’s family while her father battles cancer. We had our sisterhood “day of bonding” event, during which we painted canvases and made vision boards, and held a Galentine’s Day event.
BETA PI EASTERN ILLINOIS
We recently wrapped up a successful series of spring open houses, which included “Tinsel with the Taus” (Hair Tinsel), “Waffles and Women’s Wellness,” “Heart Eyes for Sisterhood” (Galentine’s Craft Night), and a “Tea with the Taus” tea party! We welcomed three new members during this process and these women are exemplary Taus. We are so happy to have them!
BETA TAU UMASS LOWELL
We initiated the Delta Beta class of nine wonderful sisters in the fall. We went apple picking at a local farm. We played a powderpuff football game with other sororities and attended an alumni hockey game with some AΣT alumnae. We held our weekend retreat and conducted elections for our fabulous new Executive Committee. We had our first recruitment event and met many great potential new members.
BETA OMEGA MONMOUTH
We had a very successful philanthropy event, during which we raised over $400 for the Ashley Lauren Foundation. Sisters made cookies from scratch that we then sold to students and faculty. We are so excited to be able to help families with children fighting cancer!
GAMMA GAMMA UWA
The Gamma Gamma/UWA Chapter recently welcomed five potential new members through continuous open bidding! We hosted a Galentine’s event where our dates were PNMs. Two bids were accepted that night! The other three bids were given the previous day.
GAMMA LAMBDA KUTZTOWN
We started the semester with a vision board-making sisterhood event. We also have launched Emerald Week, a week-long event where we fundraise through fun activities like tournaments, bake sales, and more. We also just celebrated Bid Day, where we recruited one new member to hit campus total!
GAMMA TAU LEBANON VALLEY
We just had an amazing disco-themed Bid Day where we welcomed our new members home! It was a super fun day filled with lots of smiles, laughs, and ABBA!
DELTA THETA MORAVIAN
Recently, we extended bids to 10 women to welcome them into our chapter. We are starting our new member education process and planning our big/little reveal! We have implemented new sister bonding opportunities with collegians and new members to strengthen our Sisterhood!
DELTA TAU OAKLAND
We have been planning our annual philanthropic event, Kickin’ It with the Taus this semester! We hold a kickball tournament to raise money for HAVEN, our local philanthropy. HAVEN is a domestic violence shelter that provides violence-free homes to survivors and services to both residents and nonresidents. Through the Women’s Wellness Initiative, we chose a cause that directly impacts our local community. HAVEN is located in Pontiac, allowing us to work with women in the Oakland University area!
We have also had many fun sisterhood events like coffee dates, ice skating, hockey games, Galentines, and a vision board-making event! We are still having a successful continuous open bidding season with a disco cowgirl Bid Day. Our Old Hollywood-themed semiformal dance in December was a huge hit! Because of these events, we have become a stronger Sisterhood, and we cannot wait for what is next!
EPSILON KAPPA TRINE
Our chapter finished our formal recruitment week in January! The overall theme this year was “Dreaming of Greek Life.” Each sorority on campus got to pick a theme, and ours ended up being “A Σ Tea Party.” We had a lot of fun during formal recruitment, and we all felt we grew closer throughout the process.
After formal recruitment finished, we began informal recruitment. We have gained six new Sisters so far, and our chapter is still growing. Overall, we had a great start to this semester, and we cannot wait to see how the rest of the semester goes!
EPSILON XI GUSTAVUS
I n October 2023, the Epsilon Xi Chapter of Gustavus Adolphus was thrilled to host its first Bobbing for a Cause event. Bobbing for a Cause was a competitive fundraising event to see which Gustie could raise the most money to purchase plus-size professional and business casual clothing to donate to our local Dress for Success center.
The event included the top three fundraisers competing against each other in an apple bobbing challenge. Because of the generosity of the Gustavus Adolphus community, the chapter was able to raise $676. These funds play a crucial role in Dress for Success’ continued efforts to empower women to transform their lives and re-envision their futures. The chapter believes this is only the beginning of this event and is excited to see how this will take off in the years to come.
In November 2023, we hosted our annual Women’s Wellness Brunch. Championed by the Gustavus community, visited by many alumnae from around Minnesota, and graced by the presence of the Epsilon Phi Chapter, we raised $2,310. All proceeds were donated to our local philanthropy, CADA, which is a non-profit organization based in Mankato, MN that provides emotional and financial services to survivors of sexual assault. We also welcomed guest speaker Jessica Auel, a mental health therapist at Gustavus Adolphus College, who spoke on setting boundaries and self-advocacy to support the brunch’s theme, “Know Your Worth.”
EPSILON PI RIC
Since our chapter is very small, we are focused on recruitment. We have hosted events for potential new members, including Philanthropy and Sisterhood nights. We held a recruitment workshop in January to nail down the main parts of recruitment and why it is important! One of our main goals is to ensure our Instagram is appealing and updated regularly so new members want to join. Our current recruitment efforts include tabling, a movie night, a women empowerment night, and much more! We are very excited for this semester!
In addition to recruitment, we are planning our Women’s Wellness Week, which will include a self-defense class, yoga night, therapeutic night, and an event for the alumnae to attend!
EPSILON PHI
WINONA STATE
We have held many recruitment events this semester, including making Valentines and flower bouquets. We extended two bids to Maya and Berlynn, who have now had their Ribbon Pledging Ceremonies and received their new member pins. They are ready for Initiation in April! We have hosted many tabling events for our national and local philanthropies and have begun raising money for each. We have had a very successful start to the year, and we hope to keep growing!
EPSILON PSI ROWAN
Our 2024 formal spring recruitment was a success! We are so excited to welcome our new class. We held an amazing Galentine’s Brunch sisterhood event. Additionally, our chapter has been working incredibly hard to support our philanthropies: we hosted a successful bake sale to support the Women’s Wellness Initiative, and we are collaborating with another organization on campus to support Girls Who Code.
ALUMNAE CHAPTER & ASSOCIATION UPDATES
BIRMINGHAM ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
The Birmingham Alumnae Association and members of the Gamma Gamma Chapter celebrated Founders Day together in November. Lynette Youngblood Yawn (Gamma Gamma 1987/UWA) was chosen as our Top Tau and received her award at the luncheon. Our annual Christmas party was held in December with a special guest! Who knew Mrs. Claus was an AΣT ? Since we had so much fun at our murder mystery event last year, we gathered together in February to solve another murder. “Pasta, Passion, and Pistols” was great fun with a delicious dinner catered by a local restaurant.
BUFFALO ALUMNAE CHAPTER
We are looking forward to warmer and sunnier days in Buffalo, NY! In January, we hosted a bowling fundraiser where family and friends shared a fun afternoon at Tonawanda Bowling Center. In March, a Sister is hosting a wine and cheese meeting at her house. In April, we are hosting our annual Mother’s Day Brunch at Pegasus Restaurant to celebrate all the amazing women in our lives. In May, we will be hosting a Girls Night Out at Hydraulic Hearth - a modern restaurant in Buffalo with great food and cocktails. We are always looking to welcome new members into our alumnae chapter!
CENTRAL INDIANA ALUMNAE CHAPTER
Our chapter has two business meetings a year: one in December and one in late spring...both are followed by fun and food. After the small talk and a welcome from our chapter president, we begin each meeting by reciting the Creed. All of us, as members of an alumnae chapter, give back to AΣT , but how else do we “contribute to humankind?” CIAC decided to tally our volunteering showing a wide variety of contributing and giving back! We are a small chapter, but as we discovered, big in giving. Local alumnae, join us in our Anchored in Indianapolis Facebook group or at one of our many events!
DALLAS-FORT WORTH ALUMNAE GROUP
Big things are happening in North Texas as the DFW alumnae group has become active again! We have a great group of alumnae excited to focus on establishing and growing a local alumnae chapter to connect alumnae and support collegiate chapters in the region.
We started getting to know each other in 2023 through a series of meetups at restaurants around the metroplex. In November, we had a great turn out for our Founders Day Celebration at Mi Cocina in Frisco. Everyone enjoyed connecting and catching up. Upcoming events in 2024 include a reception with the Alpha Sigma Tau National Council in March at Sidecar Social in Addison, Night to Reunite in April at Pinstack- Las Colinas and our Wine Tasting mixer in June at Bull Lion Ranch Winery in Grapevine.
If you are in the DFW area, we invite you to join our group on Facebook Alpha Sigma Tau - Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas to find out about upcoming events. We look forward to meeting you!
DETROIT METRO ALUMNAE CHAPTER
We ended 2023 with our annual December meeting with tons of food and an ornament exchange. Our chapter participated in Adopt a Family again this year. So far 2024 has been off to a great start! We had our annual Winter Night Out with a game night and yummy food. We are looking forward to volunteering this spring with the Delta Tau Chapter at Focus Hope, helping to sort boxes for people who don’t have enough food.
EDWARDSVILLE-ST. LOUIS AREA ALUMNAE CHAPTER
The Edwardsville-St. Louis Area alumnae enjoyed celebrating Founders Day with the Beta Eta Chapter. In December, we enjoyed the holidays with our Sisters. We made a donation of $100 to the Glen Ed Pantry as one of our service projects of the year.
In January, we held our annual dinner with the Beta Eta Chapter. It is always fun meeting the members and sharing in our Sisterhood. In February, we celebrated the alumnae chapter’s 51st Anniversary. Night to Reunite is being planned with the Beta Eta Chapter and it is always so much fun. We are looking forward to spring and planning our summer events.
LOWELL ALUMNAE CHAPTER
The Lowell Alumnae Chapter has had a great 2024 thus far, starting the year off with a trip into Boston! We are especially grateful for times like these where we get to reunite. We are looking forward to Night to Reunite. Keep an eye out on our Instagram for upcoming events @ASTLowellAlumnae.
NORTHERN INDIANA ALUMNAE CHAPTER
2024 has been an exciting year for Northern Indiana! In February we joined the Epsilon Kappa Chapter at Trine University for an alumna initiation to welcome our very first new member, Hannah-Marie Harris (Epsilon Kappa 2024/Trine). We also received word that our petition to become the Northern Indiana Alumnae Chapter was approved.
In January we gathered together in Warsaw for a happy hour get together at Downtown Eatery & Spirits. It has been absolutely wonderful to meet up in different parts of Northern Indiana and get to know different Sisters in each locale. In February we also had a fantastic
turnout for our Galentine’s brunch in Fort Wayne with 11 Sisters in attendance, many of them for the first time. We are currently planning our Night to Reunite events in April, to take place in Elkhart and LaOtto.
PHOENIX/VALLEY OF THE SUN ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
In early December, we had our holiday brunch hosted by a Sister in Phoenix. It was lovely as always and we are looking forward to brunch next year already!
We began the spring with “Coffee with the Taus” at a Sister’s home in Mesa in early January. We had so much fun being creative with a flower swap. Sisters created bouquets from all the shared flowers including ones harvested from the backyard. The results were lovely and everyone enjoyed getting crafty!
Our next event will be Night to Reunite where we will head over to the Game Show Battle Rooms in Chandler where Sisters will go head to head in a Family Feud/Wheel of Fortune/Price is Right type of challenge. We are very much looking forward to the hilarity of the evening!
Finally, our annual meeting will be held in Mesa in May where we plan for our next year hoping to find even more unique events to include in the new year.
If you are in the valley area, please, reach out to the group! Email us at pvos.ast. alumnae.association@gmail.com. We hope to meet you soon!
SAN ANTONIO ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
This year, alumnae participated in cleaning waterways throughout San Antonio and a guided nature hike as we shared in a journey of empowerment and mindfulness. We look forward to our St. Patrick’s Day event, Night to Reunite, and our Mother’s Day picnic.
YPSILANTI-ANN ARBOR ALUMNAE CHAPTER
We most recently met up for our annual holiday party in December, where we ate delicious food, exchanged gifts, and made Christmas cards for local senior homes!

BILLIE MILLER HOWELL ALPHA LAMBDA 1968/RADFORD
An active member of the Blue Ridge Alumnae Association, Billie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2023 and was undergoing chemotherapy. She said her interest in joining Alpha Sigma Tau came from “being a member of a group that helps me fulfill a lifelong dream of service and Sisterhood.” Since then, countless collegians found a Sister-friend in Mary.
She graduated from Saint Leo in 1971 with a B.A. in physical education. After graduating, Mary worked in several fields, including serving as a Saint Leo’s dorm “mother” in the 1990s. She was the executive assistant for Saint Leo University Career Planning before retiring in 2017. She remained heavily involved with St. Anthony’s Catholic Women’s Club until her passing.
Mary is survived by her husband, daughter, and grandson. We appreciate Mary’s love and dedication to Alpha Sigma Tau and will miss her dearly.
passed suddenly of a heart attack. She was serving as the Blue Ridge Alumnae Association’s Vice President of Communications at the time of her death.
Billie graduated from Radford with a B.A in education and received a master’s degree in education from Virginia Tech. She spent her entire career as a dedicated teacher in Virginia and was an active member of her church.
She is survived by her husband, sons, and grandchildren. We appreciate Billie’s love and dedication to Alpha Sigma Tau and will miss her dearly.
ANCHORING THOUGHTS
As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring and the blossoming of new beginnings, Alpha Sigma Tau stands on the cusp of a historic milestone. This year, we’re celebrating our 125 th anniversary, a testament to our Sisterhood’s enduring spirit and unwavering dedication.
This issue of The Anchor is a true celebration of the longevity and vitality of our Sisterhood. You’ll not only read 125 different reasons why to love AΣΤ , but you’ll also be reading perspectives from 125 different Sisters from chapters across the country.
Off the cuff, I could probably list 20 reasons why I love AΣΤ , but here are just a few:
• I love the connections I’ve made through AΣΤ – with women in college, in my local community, and across the country.
• I love how AΣΤ has opened my eyes to the true meaning of women supporting women and building each other up.
• I love the opportunities AΣΤ has provided me to collaborate with like-minded women on projects with shared vision and values.
• I love the perspective AΣΤ has given me on living a life of purpose, service, tradition, innovative thinking, gratitude, and so much more.
Reflecting on the journey from our humble beginnings in 1899 to the vibrant community we are today fills me with awe. The world has transformed in unimaginable ways, yet through it all, AΣΤ has remained a beacon of sisterhood, leadership, and service.
As we embark on this momentous journey toward our 125th anniversary, we are committing to going All In for Alpha Tau , setting ambitious goals to propel our Sisterhood forward into the next quarter-century. These goals serve as our guiding stars, illuminating the path forward for every Sister, regardless of where they are on their journey. Going All In reaffirms our dedication to living out our values and actively contributing to the legacy of AΣΤ in all aspects of our lives.
Together, united by our shared bond, we have the power to achieve greatness. If each of us commits to doing just 1% more, collectively, we can ensure that AΣΤ remains a vibrant, empowering community where women can learn, grow, and forge lifelong friendships.
I am filled with excitement as I envision the countless possibilities that lie ahead. Here’s to the next chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau and all that we will accomplish together in the coming year and beyond!
