Get to know Shelby Young, Alabama at Birmingham '09, Leadership Coach for the 2013-2014 academic year. Hometown: Mobile, Alabama Favorite thing to do to pass the time: I love to read! My favorite book is The Ultimate Gift by Jim Stovall. I love how you can get so wrapped up in the story as if it were your life.

What do you like most about traveling for Alpha Xi Delta? I absolutely love traveling as a LC and am beyond honored to have been chosen. My favorite part of the job is traveling all over the country meeting Sisters, inspiring them and having them inspire me! As much as they learn from me, I learn so much more from them. What do you like the least about traveling for Alpha Xi Delta? It is hard to be away from my family and it is especially hard to be away from my Theta Phi Sisters. Going to school four hours away from home as an undergraduate, my chapter Sisters became my home away from home, and I was not quite prepared to leave them.

Favorite Convention memory: I have been fortunate enough to attend Convention in both Atlanta, Georgia, in 2011 and San Francisco, California, in 2013. My favorite parts of both Conventions were the Initiation Ceremony and the Convention Countdown during the Rose Banquet. Hopefully one day I can be like Nickie Hill, Purdue ’44, who remained standing until the very end of the countdown signifying that she has attended 22 Conventions.

What’s one item you MUST take on the road with you? I cannot fly on a plane without taking my pillow pet, Russ. He was originally given to me as a gag gift from my sister, but has proven very beneficial for naps on plane rides. (In case you were wondering, Russ is a dog pillow pet.) Most memorable moment as an LC so far: My most memorable moment involved my visit to Omega Chapter at Stetson University for their chapter retreat. During the retreat, we did an activity where Sisters had the option to open up to each other and share their stories. Seeing Sisters be so vulnerable with women they recently met was moving. I am so lucky to have been able to experience this with them!

Scholarship Recipient Profile have been able to be as involved in Alpha Xi Delta and on my campus. I am putting myself through school and each of the scholarships provided me with the opportunity to do something I couldn’t have otherwise.

Bailey Hamm, Florida Atlantic ‘10, was the recipient of the Dorothy Dodd Grant (2011), the Ruth Fowler Brown Scholarship (2012) and the Anne Mehus Verbon Scholarship (2013). Below, Bailey shares how these awards helped her academically and influenced her future. “As a graduating senior who will leave school and my Sisters in December, I can reflect on how fortunate I am to have been the beneficiary of the Foundation’s grants and scholarships. Without this financial support, I would not

I received the Ruth Fowler Brown Scholarship at a time when I was having financial issues, and it allowed me to remain at school. The Dorothy Dodd Grant gave me the opportunity to attend the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) in 2013. While there, I reevaluated why I joined Alpha Xi Delta and fell in love with her in a whole new way. The Anne Mehus Verbon Scholarship alleviated financial pressures and allowed me to return to UIFI as an intern this summer. This internship, along with other leadership experiences on campus and through Alpha Xi Delta, has helped me determine what I would like to do with my future. I am currently applying to graduate programs in higher education and student affairs.

To all of the Foundation donors: Thank you! Without your gift, the Foundation wouldn’t be able to help change the lives of scholarship recipients like me. You may never meet any of us but please know that you are appreciated. I know that without you, the Foundation isn’t possible. I want to reassure you that we, the scholarship recipients, do care about you and what you do matters to us.”

Why I Give

Opportunity

Peggy Greene, Stetson '39, has been a Foundation donor since 1986. We recently sat down with Peggy to learn why she chooses the support the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation. You have been a Foundation donor since 1986, what is that makes you give every year? My goal is to give each year to honor someone for their service to Alpha Xi Delta. Our volunteers do so much for us, especially behind the scenes. This is the least I can do to thank them. Why do you give to the Foundation? The way I look at it, the Foundation is the future of Alpha Xi Delta. I want to help support that. What would you say to others as they consider their gifts this year? It is never too early to start thinking about what you love and helping it grow. Giving of your time and treasure is a wonderful way to contribute to that growth. Sisters like Peggy make it possible for the Foundation to inspire women accross the country to realize their potential every day. If you’re interested in making a difference in the lives of Alpha Xi Delta Sisters, please visit www. alphaxidelta.org to learn more about the various ways you can contribute to the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation.

The Undergraduate Giving Challenge In 2012, The Foundation transitioned the Senior Challenge to The Undergraduate Giving Challenge. During this annual challenge, each collegian is encouraged, or challenged, to make a gift to the Foundation of $18.93. This is each collegian’s opportunity to make a mark on Alpha Xi Delta, as our alumnae do with donations to The Loyalty Fund. Their gift helps Alpha Xi Delta inspire women to realize their potential and ensure that the Alpha Xi Delta experience we all love is strong today and tomorrow. Chapters with the highest participation will be recognized on the Undergraduate Giving page on the Fraternity’s National website, at Alpha Xi Delta’s National Convention and throughout the year in various ways.

Fall 2013

Dorothy Dodd Grant Follow Up we had during UIFI. The program was different than any other program we’ve had in the past because we were able to talk about living and being our Ritual without divulging secrets. It really benefited the new members who were able to get their first taste of what our Ritual is.

Suzie Coco, Alabama at Birmingham '11, received the 2013 Dorothy Dodd Panhellenic Leadership Grant, which provides an Alpha Xi Delta Panhellenic delegate or Panhellenic officer the opportunity to further her leadership abilities and foster Panhellenic values by attending the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) sponsored by the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). Below, Suzie shares what she learned at UIFI. “Attending UIFI over the summer has definitely been helpful this semester. As Ritual Chair for my chapter, I recently put on a chapter program that was inspired by a talk

As Programs Chair for the Panhellenic Council, I introduced the first Panhellenic Pride Week to our community. During the week, Ginny Carroll, Western Kentucky '82, came to our campus and spoke about the Circle of Sisterhood. During her presentation, Ginny explained that it takes $53 to pay for a girl’s tuition, uniform, supplies and lunch every day for a year, and knowing that statistic, we created a community goal to raise enough money to support 20 girls ($1,060). We’ve had a few opportunities to raise money, but our big fundraiser is coming up in November. We are hosting a Throwback Prom, complete with “officially unofficial prom pictures” and a prom king and queen. The support for the Circle of Sisterhood has given our community common goals and values which was one of

the ideas I brought back from UIFI.

“UIFI has really helped me in my position on my school’s Panhellenic Council as well as with my personal goals.”

As you can see, UIFI has really helped me in my position on my school’s Panhellenic Council as well as with my personal goals. Our Panhellenic Elections are coming up, and I am applying to be Panhellenic President. Beyond my current experience on the Executive Council, my UIFI experience has given me clear goals for the community that set me above the other candidates. The experience has made me more confident in my abilities, and I hope that is reflected in my application and speech. Wish me luck as elections approach!”
