Educational Leadership Consultant Zoë King with National President Michele Evink during a visit to Wittenberg University in October. Alpha Xi Delta was selected to make a formal presentation to Wittenberg University in hopes to bring our Zeta Chapter back to their campus.

Thoughts from Michele

T

he topic of this issue’s Q&A was, “What are you thankful for?” As Alpha Xi Deltas, we have much to be thankful for in our membership. There are many exciting, new things happening that will impact our membership for generations to come. This winter, we will celebrate two chapters’ centennial anniversaries. The Phi Chapter at Albion College will celebrate its 100th anniversary on December 3, 2015, and the Psi Chapter at The Ohio State University will celebrate on January 14, 2016. I am so thankful that these chapters have provided a place for multiple generations of women to call home for 100 years. On the flip side, we welcomed two new colonies into our Sisterhood this fall at Texas Tech University, located in Lubbock Texas, and Kennesaw State University, located near Atlanta, Georgia. To see the smiling

2 the

faces of excited new members on bid day was thrilling, and I am thankful for the hard work by our volunteers and Fraternity staff who helped successfully establish these two colonies. I know our soon-to-be official chapters at Texas Tech University and Kennesaw State University will provide a comforting home away from home for our Sisters for years to come, much like our seasoned Phi and Psi Chapters. While we’re on the topic of thankfulness, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all our alumnae who completed the alumnae survey this past summer. More than 4,700 Sisters shared their feedback with us, and we look forward to utilizing the results of this survey to develop future opportunities and programming for our alumnae Sisters. In the survey, 78% of participants responded that they developed leadership skills through membership in Alpha Xi Delta. Our vision to inspire

women to realize their potential is coming to life every day. On pages 20-27, you can read more about how some Sisters are realizing their potential through inspiring internships and career choices. I also invite you to check out the Autism Awareness Month information on pages 36-38. With so many people affected by autism, our partnership with Autism Speaks is especially meaningful at this time for our Sisters, families and friends. Please take time out of your busy schedule this April to support Autism Speaks and help improve the lives of children and families affected by autism spectrum disorders. Fraternally,

Michele Herbst Evink National President

You can imagine my surprise at getting to the last page of the current issue of The Quill and finding my own face staring back at me! Since the three collegians in the “From the Archives” picture with Mary Burt Brooks Nash are not identified I’m assuming you don’t know who we are so I thought I’d let you know. Seated on the left is Sue Heinzel and behind her is Jean Morris. (I have moved so many times I have lost track of their married names and addresses!) I’m standing on the right and it was my distinct privilege to serve on the nominating committee that selected Mrs. Nash and then to also give her nominating speech at the Convention. At that time I was the president of the Alpha Theta Chapter, Jean was treasurer and Sue was Membership Vice President. Now we are all members of Order of the Pearl. How time has flown by!

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) recognizes February as the Month of the Scholar, and all NPC member groups, as well as College Panhellenics and Alumnae Panhellenic groups, are encouraged to promote academic achievement and reward academic excellence during this time. Here are our top three ideas for you to inspire and remind Alpha Xi Delta members about academic excellence: 1. Invite women who made the dean’s list this past term to a scholarship dessert. Each woman can bring a faculty member who inspired her to achieve her outstanding GPA. 2. Organize a stress and time management workshop or other academic workshop. 3. Sponsor a faculty appreciation meal in February. Members and officers invite their favorite professors and everyone participates in discussions about good study habits and tips for academic success. However you celebrate, remember the Panhellenic Creed, “We as undergraduate members of women’s fraternities stand for good scholarship...”

Connections

Reconnecting after 48 YEARS Sisterhood doesn’t die even though years may come in the way. If there is a Sister or even a friend you’d like to catch up with, do it. You will never regret it.

Forty-eight years ago my “big sis”, Carole Eberle, graduated from Northern Michigan University and the Delta Delta Chapter and went on to a teaching career. I graduated the following year and moved to California. She had been a great big sis, and it was so neat that we even shared the same first name, spelled the same way. Fast forward to 2010 - my husband had recently passed away, and I was going through an old photo album. Yes, the kind with actual pictures. I came across her wedding announcement, which included her husband’s first and last names and middle initial. I mentioned it to some friends, and they said to try to locate her using her husband’s info. It took all of about five minutes to come up with a likely phone number. I picked up the phone, a female answered and I asked if she had graduated from Northern Michigan University and was an Alpha Xi, and identified myself. Her excitement came through the phone, and we talked and talked, catching up on each other’s lives. We kept in touch over the next few years. In 2014, when I headed to my 50th high school reunion, I asked if we could meet. I flew into Green Bay, Wisconsin, and she drove there from the Chicago area. I’ll never forget getting off the plane to see someone I hadn’t seen in 47 years. Alumnae Survery

The Results Are In! From June 10 – July 17, 2015, more than 4,700 Sisters shared their Alpha Xi Delta story by participating in our alumnae survey. Women initiated between 1937 and 2015 from 201 different chapters participated. Alumnae under 35 years of age comprised 46 percent of the total response rate, and more than 30 percent of all responses were submitted in the first 48 hours after the survey went live! Alpha Xi Delta is incredibly thankful for the thoughtful feedback provided by our alumnae. In the coming months, we will utilize the survey results to develop future opportunities and programming for our alumnae membership. It was important for us to hear your feedback to assess the current state of our alumnae membership. Although your commitment to the Fraternity began as a new member, the benefits of membership are lifelong. Through the initial review of survey responses, we’ve discovered many alumnae are eager to learn how to get involved and give back to Alpha Xi Delta!

Many bold and talented women are Alpha Xi Delta Sisters. • 78 percent of participants responded that they have developed leadership skills through their membership. • For alumnae under 35 years of age, 53 percent indicated their membership helped them to develop their networking skills, and that those skills and relationships helped them to find job opportunities after college. The world is more connected today than ever with more than 364 million LinkedIn users and a shocking 1.49 billion monthly users accessing Facebook. It comes as no surprise our survey responses indicated an increasing percentage of alumnae women who are looking for networking opportunities, in addition to social and philanthropic opportunities.

Sisterhood Face-Off

Sisterhood FACE-OFF

As we wrapped up the alumnae survey, we began to think of all the generations who make up our alumnae Sisterhood. How different were the experiences our 20th century initiates had versus the experiences of our 21st century initiates? To satisfy our curiosity and to bridge across generations, we asked Sisters from the same initiating chapters about their Alpha Xi Delta experience, pop culture from their eras and everything in between.

MARIJEAN (MJ) K. WILLIAMS, INDIANA PENNSYLVANIA ’85 1. What was the theme of your bid day? I did not go through formal recruitment. I went to an open rush party after recruitment had ended and was offered a bid through that process. I really liked the women I met through various classes who happened to join Alpha Xi Delta. They were the ones that convinced me to attend an open rush party. 2. What songs did your chapter sing? Our chapter had a few favorites: “The Sisterhood of Women”, “Alpha Xi, Alpha Xi (Eidelweiss)”. My favorite has always been “Remember.”

16 the

ERIN POPOVIC, INDIANA PENNSYLVANIA ’14 1. What was the theme of your bid day? Our most recent bid day theme was baseball! We wore jerseys and baseball hats with Alpha Xi Delta on them. 2. What songs did your chapter sing? Some of my favorite songs that my chapter sings would be “The Sisterhood of Women” and “Deep in my Heart.”

3. What is your favorite recruitment memory? I always liked the excitement and enthusiasm that came with recruitment. Meeting new people and discussing my experience in Alpha Xi Delta was always rewarding.

3. What is your favorite recruitment memory? My favorite recruitment memory was this fall when I was assigned to the same bump group as my twin. It was so amazing to be able to talk to potential new members about our chapter’s Sisterhood with her. The strong connection between my twin and I was definitely noticeable when we talked about how joining Alpha Xi Delta make us realize our true potential.

SUSAN SHIRING, MOUNT UNION ’61

CASSIDY OTT, MOUNT UNION ’13

1. Where did your chapter hold their formal? Our chapter held formals at the country club in town.

1. Where did your chapter hold their formal? We held our formal at the Walsh University banquet hall.

2. What was your favorite place on campus to hang out? My favorite place to hang out on campus was the local donut shop.

2. What was your favorite place on campus to hang out? The patio outside of our library; It is a nice, quiet place to get work done.

3. What was your favorite memory from your college years? My favorite memory would be being a part of the sorority. Since it was a small campus, there was not much to do and the sorority provided me with lots of social and academic opportunities. I love being part of the organization!

3. What was your favorite memory from your college years? My favorite memory has been getting to go to the D3 football national championship to cheer on Mount Union’s team with my Sister!

/ FALL/WINTER 2015

KRISTEN FLORY, MICHIGAN STATE ‘92 1. What was your favorite college course? I was a zoology major and added interdisciplinary humanities as a second degree, so my favorites are a little all over the map. The ones that really stand out are Environmental Physiology (which was a look at how the physiology of animals/humans adapted to the environment they live in) and a humanities course that examined the benefits of the movie “Schindler’s List” (which came out that year) and whether or not it should be used as “the” text/movie to teach children about the Holocaust (instead of the “Diary of Anne Frank”). Both were really interesting, challenging and thought provoking. 2. What was one regrettable fashion choice you had during college? Pleated pants that tapered at the ankle. 3. How did you and your Sisters stay in touch over winter break? I lived in southern Virginia, so I was at least 12 hours away from my Sisters over break. Cell phones did not exist, nor did email, social media or any other digital communication. Winter break was too short for letters. So, when we did communicate it was over the land-line telephone. I drove home from Michigan to Virginia during winter break, and I do recall one of my Sisters making me about six mixed tapes to listen to during my drive.

JANICE WITTSCHIEBE, GEORGIA TECH ‘75

EMILY HOCH, MICHIGAN STATE ‘13 1. What was your favorite college course? My favorite course I have taken has been my interpersonal communication class because it taught me so much about myself as a person and about my relationships with other people. Taking that course has shaped how I communicate with my family members, friends and Sisters. 2. What was one regrettable fashion choice you had during college? I don’t personally have any regrettable fashion choices that are funny enough to share, but during recruitment, our recruitment secretary walked all the way across campus wearing a pair of Nike® shorts that were turned inside out, and she didn’t realize it until after she arrived to where we were holding recruitment. The funniest part is that she made multiple stops at Walgreens and the coffee shop without anyone telling her. 3. How do you and your Sisters stay in touch over winter break? My chapter does not have any issues with keeping in touch over breaks! We have the GroupMe app with all 172 of our Sisters, so there’s always a funny story being shared or advice being given. There’s never a dull moment, and it makes the time spent apart go by so much faster. We are all caught up with what is going on individually with our Sisters and with our chapter whenever we get back from a break, whether it’s one month or an entire summer.

LUCY MITCHELL, GEORGIA TECH ‘13

1. Who was president while you were an active member of Alpha Xi Delta? Two presidents served terms in office while I attended college, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

1. Who was president while you were an active member of Alpha Xi Delta? Barack Obama has served as president all throughout my collegiate experience.

2. What was your favorite song while you were in college? My favorite song to listen to while in school was “Your Song” by Elton John.

2. What was your favorite song while you were in college? My favorite song is “Lifted Up” by the group Passion Pit.

3. What was your favorite movie while you were in college? “All of the Presidents Men.”

3. What was your favorite movie while you were in college? “Bridesmaids.”

Jordan McGinn, Albion College ’14

Brigitte Perera, Worcester Polytechnic Institute ’13

Jordan worked at SOAR in Dubois, Wyoming, this summer as a wrangler. SOAR is a camp for children who are affected by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. As a wrangler, Jordan took care of horses and taught the campers how to ride them. She was fortunate enough to visit the surrounding states and National Parks, such as Yellowstone. She found this internship opportunity through a friend, a fellow teammate on Albion’s equestrian team, who had worked at SOAR the previous summer.

Brigitte spent her summer working at the Panama Canal via a National Science Foundation Grant she received as one of the top five females in her civil engineering class. To quote Brigitte, “It is an incredible opportunity to be chosen to work on the Panama Canal because it is one of the greatest civil engineering feats in the world.” The Canal is currently undergoing an expansion project to accommodate larger ships, and Brigitte is grateful to be able to experience history in the making!

Caitlin Sabolich, University of Central Oklahoma ’12

Courtney Kennedy, Auburn University ’12

Caitlin graduated in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. She now works as a producer for the morning show at KOCO 5 News in Oklahoma City, the ABC affiliate. Caitlin was unsure of what she wanted to do when she started college, but knew she loved the media. From her first day as an Alpha Xi, her chapter pushed her to take initiative. She immediately stepped up into leadership roles, and began taking responsibility. The leadership skills she learned from Greek life transferred over to academics, and Caitlin quickly moved up the line in the student newscast at the University of Central Oklahoma. She became the head producer of the student newscast, which led to an internship at KOCO 5. After graduation, she was offered a job as a full-time producer. She thanks her chapter for teaching her the importance of taking responsibility and leading by example.

Courtney Kennedy spent her summer interning for Lilly Pulitzer in their Creative Communications Department. She was the social media intern, so a bulk of her time was spent on social media interacting with Lilly lovers. One of her daily tasks was looking at data and learning what works when promoting the brand. Her favorite thing about working for “the pink palace” is that no day was the same - she did everything from posting their Snapchat stories to traveling to New York and attending a resort fashion presentation. Courtney learned about this internship through a high school job at the Lilly Pulitzer store in Boca Raton, Florida, and said, “It was hands down the best summer of my life!”

Casey Pham Casey Pham, University of North Carolina at Wilmington ’13 Casey discovered Autism Speaks’ collaborative project with Google Cloud Platform and Google Genomics, MSSNG and sent an email to an information request address. She was fully expecting an automated response, but to her surprise, received an email from the Vice President/Head of Genomic Discoveries at Autism Speaks. They set up a phone call, and she learned about the mission of MSSNG and its progress thus far. MSSNG is focused on sequencing the DNA of 10,000+ families affected by autism to build upon previous data in order to create the world’s largest genomic database. The database is intended to be widely accessible to researchers all over the world for open science and to identify subtypes of autism, thus potentially leading to better diagnostics and treatments. Her research focused on understanding MSSNG’s database and interpreting the genetic architecture of autism spectrum disorders. Throughout her study, she raised questions that will lead into another semester of research. To quote Casey “I cannot thank my Sisters enough for the unconditional love and support. Each of them pushed me to keep dreaming big, to love science passionately, and to never lose faith. But most of all, they made me realize my potential and the potential I have to move science forward.”

Kayla Breeden Kayla Breeden, Ohio University ’12 Kayla is currently serving as Public Relations Vice President of the Pi Chapter at Ohio University, and recently followed her dreams of working on the designs of a magazine in New York City by interning in the Art Department of Cosmopolitan Magazine! To quote Kayla, “I feel so lucky for all that I have learned about the industry, design and myself along the way.” Kayla found the opening on ed2010.com and applied. “Not long after I sent in my application, I saw that one of the members of the Art Department at Cosmopolitan viewed my LinkedIn profile so I messaged her to explain my background and interest in the position. She was interested in what I had to say, shared advice with me and encouraged me to complete a design test to send back to her to see how I worked with Cosmo’s style guide. Once I sent it to her, she asked me to send my resume to her. We talked on the phone a few weeks later, and then a week after the phone call she offered me the position,” explains Kayla. This experience confirmed for Kayla that she does want to work in the magazine industry post-graduation. It also taught her that you have to go after what you want in life. Work hard, stay positive and be a go getter... that’s how you make your dreams come true!

Realize Your Potential: The Editor’s Guide

REALIZE YOUR POTENTIAL:

The Editor’s Guide

Julie Naughton, Nebraska-Lincoln ’88, is a senior editor at Women’s Wear Daily and covers fashion, beauty and the entertainment fields. We had the opportunity to do a Q&A with Julie to understand what happens in her typical day, advice she has for those trying to break into the publishing field and how Alpha Xi Delta has inspired her to realize her potential.

Q: Could you please explain your role at Women’s Wear Daily (WWD)?

JN: I am a senior editor for WWD, which covers the fashion, beauty and entertainment fields. I am responsible for determining content for, writing and editing beauty stories for WWD, WWD. com and monthly Beauty Inc. WWD, the leading fashion daily paper, has 60,000 subscribers (mixture of print, digital and bundled subscriptions). The site garners approximately 827,000 unique visitors monthly. During New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, WWD’s monthly unique visitors spike to 1.1 million. Some of my duties include: • Generating an average of 20 bylined stories per week for WWD, WWD.com and Beauty Inc. • Directing beauty-related photo shoots • Reporting beauty and retail trends • Representing WWD to interface with and interview major celebrities, and corporate presidents and CEOs • Representing WWD for national television interviews to cover key industry stories and trends • Developing content for all WWD’s social media channels, which have 4.1 million followers. • Training and supervising junior staff members

Q: How did you get started in the field of beauty reporting?

JN: Honestly? I fell into it. I double-majored in news-editorial journalism and English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and

I was the arts and entertainment editor of my college paper, The Daily Nebraskan. I thought I’d end up as an entertainment editor somewhere. When I moved to New York without a job, I was offered two different jobs within the first six weeks: one as the beauty and fashion assistant at Woman’s Day, and as a copy editor at Popular Mechanics. No offense to motorized transportation, but that choice was sort of a no-brainer.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job?

JN: Writing. I learned to read at 2 ½ years old, and I think I wrote my first short story in second grade. I am immensely grateful to be able to make a living writing and editing. Also, I am insatiably curious about EVERYTHING (I honestly don’t know how I lived before Google) and being in this field lets me be nosy for a living. I love meeting interesting people, whether they’re celebrities, CEOs or colleagues. And I haven’t had to buy beauty products since about 1999 — my desk resembles Sephora. Actually, so does my apartment.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

JN: There actually are few typical days, which I like. A day can entail anything from going to press events (of which there are dozens) and coming back to the office and writing things up, reporting backstage at New York Fashion Week in September and February of each year, interviewing the president of Estée Lauder or writing breaking news. Or, all of the above. I also review general fiction, general nonfiction,

self-help and romance for Publishers Weekly, and I occasionally write longer articles for them. Considering I own enough books to open my own library, it’s fun to get paid to read. Plus, I am the least patient person you’ll ever meet. I love getting my hands on books (and beauty products, for that matter) before they’re available to the general public.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment thus far in your

professional career? JN: One of them was being a finalist, along with several WWD colleagues, for the Jesse H. Neal Awards for business journalism for our coverage of 9/11. I was in New York for both the first World Trade Center attack in 1993, and then for 9/11 in 2001. I can’t describe how surreal 9/11 was in any way that accurately conveys how I felt. Sadly, another one of my Rho Sisters can relate — Shawn Kearney, who was in town from Minneapolis for a shoot on 9/11. On a much lighter note, I also got a kick out of the time my boss and I interviewed Katie Holmes. It was the first interview she gave after her divorce from Tom Cruise, and she’d signed a spokesperson deal with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. What neither my boss nor I expected was that the story would blow up like it did. We were on “Good Morning America” (GMA), and my sister asked me at the time, “Let me get this straight — you’ve going to be on “GMA” for interviewing someone else?” The story garnered more than a billion page views on wwd.com.

Q: Who have been some of your

favorite people to interview? Why?

JN: One of my all-time favorites is actress Cate Blanchett. She is so normal and down to earth, and she’s incredibly intelligent. I asked her during one interview how she stayed so down to earth, and she burst out laughing. She said, “Why, do you normally interview a bunch of divas?” And I laughed and said, “Yes. Yes I do.” Sarah Jessica Parker is very down to earth as well; she came to her fame a bit later in life, so she seems to appreciate it and her fans. Cate and Sarah Jessica are the kind of women you’d want to be friends with — smart, funny and nice. Kendall Jenner also impressed me. I wasn’t sure what to expect before I met her. I’ve also interviewed her sisters, Kim and Khloe Kardashian. While I think all of the Kardashian/Jenner sisters are

24 the

/ FALL/WINTER 2015

good businesswomen (love them or hate them, you have to admire their marketing skills), Kendall was very thoughtful and mature, particularly speaking about Caitlyn Jenner. The three celebs I got the most flustered interviewing were Bono, Sting and Madonna, probably because I grew up with their music. Sting and Bono both have this incredible charisma, this incredible ability to make you feel like you’re the only person in the room. It’s intoxicating.

Q: If you could interview any person in the world – living or dead,

who would it be? JN: Super-tough question, but I’m going to have to go with President John F. Kennedy. While JFK was assassinated six years before I was born, I’ve always been fascinated with the Kennedy presidency. My father’s parents were Irish immigrants, so it was a great matter of pride for them to see an Irish Catholic in the White House. And Kennedy and I, on foreign policy, see completely eye to eye. As far as someone living? President Obama. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m something of a political junkie. One of my minors was political science; the other was history.

Q: What advice would you give

to young women who are trying to pursue a career in publishing? JN: Publishing is a completely different landscape from when I got into it in 1991. Social media and smartphones didn’t exist, and the Internet barely existed. Heck, personal computers were rare — I went off to college with a typewriter. I’d say, first of all, take ANY opportunity you can to write. Write for your college paper, your college yearbook or any internal publications at your school. Take on multiple internships. I spent three summers in NYC on magazine internships while in college, and I’m convinced that’s how I was able to find a publishing job so quickly. Network as much as you can.

Q: How has Alpha Xi Delta inspired you to realize your potential?

JN: I went to college in Lincoln, Nebraska, 1,500 miles from where I grew up in Mission Viejo, California. When I got to Lincoln, I only knew about three people in the entire state who I wasn’t related to.

Becoming a member of Alpha Xi Delta inspired me to do a lot of things I probably never would have had the courage to try on my own – including moving to New York City without a job — because of the incredible support and advice from my Rho Sisters. As Quill Chair, I had the opportunity to learn leadership skills, which have been invaluable in my professional life. It’s also given me some of the closest friends I’ve ever had. In the course of other volunteer work and in business here in NYC, I’ve met many Sisters from other chapters, which has been fun. I do volunteer work for the Junior League of the City of New York, and I met two other Sisters from other chapters there. A former colleague was a Sister from another chapter. Two PR people I’ve worked with frequently are Alpha Xi Delta Sisters. It’s always fun to make those connections.

Q: Do you have any beauty secrets you would like to share with

our Sisters? JN: Wear sunscreen! I’m totally not kidding. Believe me, you’ll thank me for telling you this when you’re my age. I’m also rather fond of the MAC Cosmetics, Nars and Charlotte Tilbury beauty lines. I’m generally wearing at least one thing from each line per day. Also, when it comes to makeup, less is really more. I swear. Oh, and get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water. I sound so sensible, ha!

Q: What is your favorite Alpha Xi Delta memory?

JN: I have so many! I’d say the top two were bid day in August of 1987, and being a runner-up for the Frances Trewyn Kuechenmeister Award at National Convention in 1990. Bid day was magical. It was even more special because my mother (Catherine Curran Naughton, Nebraska – Lincoln ’62), an Alpha Xi Delta Sister and also a Rho Chapter alumna, was there to share that with me when I found out I was to be an Alpha Xi Delta Sister, so it’s satisfying to share that with her. When I was in college, I borrowed her Quill and I often wore hers and mine together. And being recognized at a National level when Alpha Xi Delta has so many outstanding women to choose from was a wonderful feeling. I was also psyched that Rho Chapter won an award at that same Convention for the work I did with our Quill program – I think the position is now called Programs Vice President.

Q: What is your favorite social

media channel? JN: Facebook, because I’ve reconnected with so many Sisters I’d lost touch with that way. I’m also pretty fond of Twitter and Instagram. In a way, though, I’m grateful social media didn’t exist when I was in college because I think there’s so much pressure on college students. You don’t want to document anything stupid because social media never really dies, and future employers do check it out. I’m sure I did many stupid things as a student, but happily none of them are documented for the ages.

Q: We have heard that you are a Lilly Pulitzer lover, what is your favorite Lilly print?

JN: I have to laugh because I amuse my friends at Lilly Pulitzer with my freakish memory for pattern, style name and season. I think my all-time favorite print was my gateway print into Lilly Pulitzer: Worth Avenue, a green/blue toile of Palm Beach with a white background, from the spring of 2002. Oh, and the dress style was Nina. I guarantee that if anyone I know at Lilly Pulitzer Corporate is reading this, they will be laughing their heads off. I’m also rather fond of Lillywood, a 2004 print that marries my favorite brand with where I grew up, Southern California. Pink Palace, a Hawaiian print from 2008, and Lilly’s Lagoon, a print from this fall’s collection are also favorites. I’m obsessed with Lilly to the point where if I’m NOT wearing something brightly colored and patterned, friends and colleagues alike ask me why. It’s sort of become my trademark — sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the myriad women in black.

Originally featured in our spring 2011 issue.

Maxine Burton, president and founder of burton + BURTON®, was recently recognized in the floral industry by having a flower named in her honor at the International Floriculture Exposition (IFE) held in Chicago. Flower naming events are a venerated tradition in Europe, where queens and heads of state have been honored with flowers named after them in a formal ceremony. Honorees are chosen by a panel of fellow industry leaders. Maxine is only the sixth person to be recognized by the IFE with this award. The pink Dianthus Sweet F1 is awarded the name and trade designation “Maxine,” Dianthus Sweet, a solid true pink multiflowered variety with sturdy dark green stems. The flower was bred by Linda Laughner of PanAmerican Seed, a division of Ball Horticultural Company. The award was presented by Cindy Hanauer of Grand Central Floral, a 2012 recipient of the same award. Hanauer said, “It’s literally impossible to discuss the history of the floral industry without recognizing Maxine’s 33-year role in the balloon, hard goods and décor industry. Without her continuous involvement over the years, the floral industry would look much different than it does today and would certainly be much less visually impactful.” The award was a surprise to Burton, as the winner each year is a closely guarded secret until the ceremony. Said Burton, “To be recognized by people with whom I have so much history and so much respect is an incredible honor, not just for me but for our entire burton + BURTON family. A very special thanks goes to IFE and Ball Horticulture Company. I can hardly wait until spring to see our flower beds filled with blooming ‘Maxine’ Dianthus.” The “Maxine” Dianthus will be available in the spring of 2016.

Angela is an author who has written the “Wendy on Wheels” children’s series. “Wendy on Wheels” came to Angela in a dream in January 2010 after a troubling conversation with her sister, Amanda. Amanda, who uses a wheelchair full-time due to spina bifida, said that many young wheelchair users feel unmotivated. After her dream, she knew she had to bring this unforgettable character to the world. Angela visits many schools to read and entertain students with the book’s universal message of acceptance and enjoying life. Angela’s fourth book, “Wendy on Wheels Takes a Stand” was released in January 2012. This book is about bullying and finding positive solutions to problems to create social change. Teachers have used it in their classrooms to help explain recent news events related to racial tensions and rioting. In May 2015, all four of Angela’s books became available in electronic format. E-books are especially beneficial for children with mobility issues that may prevent them from holding a physical paper book. Angela is especially excited about this because children with disabilities can have the books read to them on their tablet or device. She is currently working on her fifth installment in the series, “Wendy on Wheels Moves On”. Wendy will be a little older since we last saw her. This story is about perseverance. To quote Angela, “A lot of times in our lives, we experience setbacks from doing things we truly want to do. It’s important that we continue to do what we want to do and yet be open to other avenues and ways that we can do them.” It will be available January 2017.

Mallory Brown, Albion ’05 Originally featured in our spring 2011 issue.

Mallory founded World Clothes Line (WCL) after backpacking Northern Thailand. In Laos she encountered a family who was in desperate need of clothing, and wanted to create a company that would bring awareness to this universal and basic need. In 2011, she completed her first two clothing deliveries in Detroit and Peru. Since then, she has added 15 countries - Indonesia, Israel, Haiti, Nepal, and 11 countries throughout Africa. “When I started World Clothes Line, I was a passionate girl with a dream. This past January, she spent three weeks traveling throughout Haiti. Mallory’s team distributed new World Clothes Line tees to various villages throughout the island nation. During the first week, she met a wonderful group of boys through a social work program for street kids in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Ten days later, she was driving back into the city when she saw two of the boys playing in a park wearing the WCL tees she had given them. It meant so much to her to know that she had fulfilled a true need.

Our Quill: The Symbol of Our Heritage

Our Quill:

THE SYMBOL OF OUR HERITAGE

This story was written in the 1960s by an unknown Sister. This story is reprinted from the spring 2000 issue of The Quill. There is no other symbol that is near and dear to our hearts as the golden Quill of Alpha Xi Delta. Since the beginning, it has been the visible link that binds our Sisterhood together. Our badge, and all that is represents, is a gift passed down to us through time. But why was the Quill chosen as our badge? Part of the inspiration that motivated Lewie Strong Taylor was the quote, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” It is a simple yet timeless statement that touches the very ideas and beliefs of our Founders. Another thing that influenced Mrs. Taylor was a memory from her childhood: “When I was a young girl, my grandfather whittled the end of a nice quill from the poultry yard, shaping it into a pen to show me how he used to write when he was a boy. This was interesting to me.” “When I was in Galesburg, attending Lombard College, the 10 girls who formed the first group of Alpha Xi Delta were each asked to submit a design for a pin to be worn to distinguish its members. I thought of the quill pen my grandfather had used and how it would look in gold and the significance of the pen, and I did not hesitate to ask for its consideration. I was greatly surprised when it was accepted as I felt sure it would mean much to each one of our members,” said Lewie. That first design by Lewie Strong Taylor was originally drawn with a rose above the Quill, but this addition was discarded on the advice of the jeweler who made those first pins. The badges worn by our Founders were simple, plain gold Quills, about 7/8

28 the

/ FALL/WINTER 2015

of an inch long, set on stickpins. Bertha Cook Evans felt that their one big disappointment was that the badges were not ready for the founding. She noted, “We had wild ideas that we could have a die made and our first pins made in time for our first public announcement and appearance.” Almira Cheney wrote, “On April 17, 1893, having no pins to wear, we wore a long stemmed pink rose and a tiny badge of colors. By the second winter we grew in self-esteem, I suppose, so we enlarged the ribbon badge until it was four inches across and with many loops. For a year or so we usually wore the colors over the heart with the pin stuck through them. We loved our pin, colors and rose; in fact everything about Alpha Xi Delta passionately.” Miss Cheney wrote on; “…Being stickpins, with a tiny prong guard, we promptly lost them during the first few years. I believe I still had mine when I graduated in 1896, but had lost it by 1913. Since they cost $2.50 (Bertha Cook Evans thought they would cost only $1.25), the lost ones were slow to be replaced. During the formative years of Alpha Xi Delta, the badge varied in both form and ornamentation. In 1894, the sapphire was adopted as our official jewel, and soon after the stickpins were replaced with clasp pins. Generally, the Quill design and jewel choice was left up to each individual member. Cora Bollinger Block was the first to add gems to her Quill in the form of a sapphire flanked with turquoise on each side, representing light and dark blue. Other pins were adorned with opals and few were even made with our Fraternity letters in black enamel instead of burnished gold.

The lack of a uniform pin became a growing concern among members during the years following nationalization. One standard badge design was needed to represent a united Fraternity. This desire crystallized in an address given by Ella Boston Leib, then Grand President, at the fifth National Convention in 1909. Standardization of the Quill was finally accomplished two years later in 1911. A definite die was chosen and the choice of jewels was limited to pearls and diamonds. It was also adopted that an official jeweler would be appointed to further ensure the uniformity of our badge. Even though the design of the Quill has remained unchanged since 1911, somehow, each pin becomes as unique as the Sister who wears it. For it not only symbolizes the ideals and tenants of the Fraternity, but also comes to reflect the wearer’s own personal spirit. “Memories of joys and sorrows past are ever clinging tendrils about it,” wrote an Alpha Xi Delta at the turn of the century. There is an even greater mystique surrounding the emblems worn by those women of strength and vision who formed Alpha Xi Delta. The inspiration that these women encourage cannot help but become intertwined with their pins. One woman, Elsie Hankey Matson, Mu Chapter, University of Minnesota, was one of those fortunate few who came into possession of a Founder’s Quill, and in 1962, she told her story: “Because over many years we had the rare privilege to be intimately associated with Founder Julia Maude Foster, the members of Mu Chapter felt that we were singly honored…So close were our mutual associations and friendships that we even called this distinguished, silvery-haired lady by her given names – indeed, she preferred to be called Julia Maude. “…One of Mu’s own beloved charter members was Mary Helson Harmon, a woman of rare qualities and beauty of character, who, just as Julia Maude Foster, embodied all of the noble traits idealized by our Sisterhood. She, too, loved Alpha Xi Delta with a depth of affection and devotion which

“The pen is mightier than the sword.” It is a simple yet timeless statement that touches the very ideas and beliefs of our Founders. drew her into close rapport with the older woman, and together they shared many hours of both joy and sorrow.” “It was from Mary’s own lips that I heard the statement that at one time when she and Julia Maude were discussing the latter’s Quill, Mary impulsively asked, ‘Julia Maude, someday may I have your pin?’ Whether Mary knew what plans were in the offing at the time, no one knows; but Julia Maude made the promise. Strangely enough, its fulfillment came sooner than she had anticipated. At the next National Convention, when she was acting as Chaplain, National Council presented Miss Foster with a beautifully jeweled Quill that she wore henceforth; and Mary came into possession of the one replaced by it…” Time passed and all too soon Julia Maude Foster was called into Chapter Eternal on August 30, 1948, to be followed some years later by Mary Helson Harmon. The question then arose in the minds of Alice and Ada, sisters of Mary, what to do with her Quills. Each had her own, plus Mary’s two. I do not know why they did it, but they made me happy beyond words by asking me to be the recipient of the emblem worn by two women for whom I had the deepest love and admiration. “Almost from the first I had a haunting realization that the pin could belong to no one Sister, but rather to all; that it should be placed in the archives of the Fraternity for safe-keeping in perpetuity. And the historic Quill was donated to Alpha Xi Delta.”

Our Quill: The Symbol of Our Heritage

Why are Quill badges offered for sale online? We believe these badges were lost or stolen, or are being sold by members or family members of Alpha Xi Deltas who do not know that appropriate disposition of the badges is to return them to the Fraternity Headquarters. No Sister wants to see our badge sold this way, but it’s impossible for us to control what is bought and sold online. What we can do is continue educating members about the most respectful way to treat our badge. There are a number of dedicated Alpha Xi Deltas who monitor online auction sites, looking for Quills and other memorabilia. Sometimes these badges are purchased and either added to their personal collections or donated to Fraternity Headquarters.

Save the Date!

March 7, 2016 is International Badge Day International Badge Day is a day to celebrate our Sisterhood by wearing our beloved Quill badge. From our strong, genuine friendships to our dedicated work with our philanthropic partner Autism Speaks, Alpha Xi Deltas certainly have much to be proud of on this day of celebration. As we display our Panhellenic pride on International Badge Day, be proud of who you are and your membership in Alpha Xi Delta – on March 7 and every day.

Wear and Use of the Quill Badge The symbolism of the Quill is entrusted only to initiated members of Alpha Xi Delta. There are rules to be followed when you wear the Quill. We have outlined some tips for you.

Location The Quill is to be worn on the left side of the breast, in line with the heart. To locate the exact location, place your right thumb at the base of your throat, spread each finger approximately one inch apart and place your pin at the tip of your ring finger. The Quill is worn with the tip slightly lower than the rest of the badge.

Accessories A chapter guard with the Greek letters of your initiating chapter may be attached to your Quill. Wear the guard either below the Quill or to the left of the feathers of the Quill. Dangles representing involvement in the chapter or national organization may be added to guard chains. Nothing is to be worn above the Quill or new member pin.

Clothing Options Your Quill is worn on dresses, blouses or sweaters. It may be worn on the lapel of a suit, but is not to be worn with sportswear such as shorts or jeans. An alumna may have her Quill made into a suitable piece of jewelry.

Mourning The sign of mourning is to wear the Quill for three days with the letter “Xi” covered in black.

Chapter Eternal At your death, the Quill is to be buried with you, given to another member of Alpha Xi Delta (through your bequest), or returned to Fraternity Headquarters.

Alpha Xi Delta Foundation Annual Report The Alpha Xi Delta Foundation Annual Report reflects activity for the prior fiscal year. In this case, donations, donors, grants, scholarships and program funding for June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015. This gives us the unique opportunity to look back on how the programs and scholarships you helped to fund early in the fiscal year have impacted our members more than a year later. The Founders’ Academy (TFA), Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity’s premiere leadership training conference, kicked off on June 19, 2014. It brought together 124 collegiate members, both current and emerging leaders from their chapters. TFA focused on helping Sisters discover and build upon their Strengths (StrengthsQuest™) while learning about Alpha Xi Delta’s Founders and an emphasis on our Ritual and heritage.

The Founders’ Academy will be hosted again in the summer of 2016 for current and emerging chapter leaders. If you are interested in supporting The Founders’ Academy, sponsorship opportunities will be available. Please contact either Kendra Lewis, Director of Development, at klewis@alphaxidelta.org or 317.872.3500 ext. 117 or Elizabeth de Jong, Development Officer, at edejong@alphaxidelta.org or 317.628.6612.

Grace Bova, DePaul ’12, attended TFA as then-president of the Iota Rho Chapter. She has since graduated and was hired to travel as a Leadership Coach (LC) for Alpha Xi Delta. “Because of my experience as a colony member of Iota Rho, I thought I wanted to apply to be either an Educational Leadership Consultant or a Leadership Coach. Attending The Founders’ Academy helped me know I wanted to apply to be an LC. Learning about my Strengths and how they work together, as well as the Strengths others have, and how I could use those to be successful not just as a chapter leader but also in my career had a profound impact on me. I knew then that I wanted to be able to share this knowledge with my Sisters and help them realize their potential. I couldn’t leverage my Strengths in my current role as an LC without what I learned at The Founders’ Academy.”

Meet a Scholarship Recipient

Alexis Lancour, Ferris State ’12, is also benefiting professionally from her undergraduate experience at TFA. “I am now out in the work force and am an alumna of Delta Sigma Chapter. I am seeing how using my leadership skills and strengths in the work force is just as helpful as in college. I attended TFA as chapter president and took an emerging leader with me. We were both excited to use what we had learned with our chapter, but I wasn’t expecting how much impact that experience would have on me after I graduated. Learning about Strengths, both mine and that each person has their own unique set of Strengths, has helped me realize I don’t need to compete with my co-workers to be successful. If I build on my Strengths and do the best job I can, I will stand out on my own merits.”

Bianca Walsh, Georgia Tech ’13, recipient of 2014 the Ruth Fowler Brown Scholarship I found out about the Foundation scholarship application through my chapter Foundation Liaison. I decided to apply because I felt like, as much as I loved Alpha Xi Delta, I wasn’t able to fully commit to my chapter because I was working multiple jobs to help pay for school. When I learned I would be receiving this scholarship, I felt the stress about paying bills lessen. With the financial help for school, I was able to give more time to Alpha Xi Delta, and I’ve gone from serving as Assistant Financial Vice President to Financial Vice President. Writing the essay to apply for the scholarship was a good time for me to reflect on what Alpha Xi Delta meant to me. I always knew that sorority life wasn’t just about the parties, but this helped me understand that a strong Sisterhood has helped me find my best friends, challenge myself academically and get involved in ways I never imagined. I feel like I am continuing the tradition of women to be trailblazers at Georgia Tech, and Alpha Xi Delta is a part of that success. >> View the entire list of Foundation donors for June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015 in the online version of the fall/winter Quill.

The first Foundation Scholarship was awarded in 1965. Since then, more than 1,120 Sisters representing 155 different chapters have been awarded scholarships.

Why I Give Jean Koza Leider, Iowa ‘68 What inspires your loyal support?

Marilyn Herbes Horner, Nebraska-Omaha ‘53 What inspires your loyal support?

When I moved to Boston in 1970 after graduation from the University of Iowa, I met Gertrude Mowry Spaulding who was also a Sigma alumna; however, she was at the University of Iowa in 1932 and now living in the Boston area! There were many women in the Boston Alumnae Association who instantly became my good friends and helped me acclimate to my new life in Boston. Gertrude was one of them and such a generous Sister. She shared not only her time and organization interests, she frequently invited me to her summer home in Maine with my family. Gertrude and her sister, Virginia Mowry, Iowa ’28, also established a scholarship with the Foundation and she encouraged me to continue to support the Fraternity and Foundation as she did throughout her life. I am forever grateful for having Gertrude as a Sister and loyal supporter with many years of age between us. She is just one of my inspirations!

I love Alpha Xi Delta because it has given me Sisters everywhere. I have no natural sister, but many who probably mean more to me than a natural born sister would have. I have always been proud to say “I am an Alpha Xi, not I was an Alpha Xi.” When I was a Province Alumnae Director from 1977-1981, I encouraged alumnae to donate to the Loyalty Fund. I used to say “There are thousands of Alpha Xi Deltas – if everyone gave just one dollar to the Loyalty Fund, think of the money generated to further the Fraternity’s goals.” (That still applies today). I tried to donate more regularly. When my husband, Walt, and I started our business in 1977, we made a promise to God to give back 10% off the top. Walt and I have followed the 10% or more policy for the last 38 years, and the Loyalty Fund is one I believe in strongly.

You have established the Jean Leider Scholarship benefiting undergraduate or graduate members from any chapter in the New England States studying in the fields of Engineering or Medicine (including nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and biotechnology.) How did you come to this decision? I have always been interested in engineering,

You have established the Marilyn A. and Walter C. Horner Scholarship benefiting undergraduate members of Gamma Delta Chapter in the University of Nebraska Omaha College of Business Administration, or members of Gamma Delta Chapter, Rho Chapter or Delta Gamma Chapters pursuing a graduate degree in the University of Nebraska Omaha College of Business Administration. How did you come to this decision? Deciding on endowing a scholarship for

medicine and technology even though my undergraduate degree wasn’t in any of these fields. One of my Sisters at the University of Iowa (Lori Dolenak Carlson, Iowa ’69 ) received a civil engineering degree and at that time, not many women were getting engineering degrees. I believe she has influenced me for choosing engineering for the scholarship; along with my husband Joel. He, too, is an engineer and has been very supportive of me giving to Alpha Xi Delta.

How does it feel to endow a scholarship and support the higher education of future generations of Sisters? I am very proud that I have the ability to help a Sister who is seeking financial assistance in areas of education that I feel are most important for the future of all mankind. Education in general is extremely important; however I chose these fields of study for a scholarship because of a need to help others live better lives. As someone who is getting older, I would like to think that my support of higher education will help to reduce medical problems for young and old alike; and that technology will make life easier in the future generations for all Alpha Xi Deltas!

business administration majors was a no-brainer. It was my major in the 1950s and Walt’s when he started college in the late 50s, after serving four years in the Navy. Opportunities for women in business are much better now and a scholarship to help attain that potential is our wish.

How does it feel to endow a scholarship and support the higher education of future generations of Sisters? It is very gratifying to be able to endow a scholarship. I worked hard on getting the Gamma Delta Scholarship endowed. Having seen the several recipients over the past few years achieve many of their dreams with scholarship assistance, I was inspired to establish one for business majors. I hope to see future generations of Gamma Deltas who are undecided on a major make that choice because women in business today is different than it was when I was in college, and maybe one in five women in business classes with 150 or more male students!

Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month During April, Alpha Xi Delta dedicates one week for each pillar of Autism Speaks’ mission. We have outlined each week’s pillar so that you can get ready to raise autism awareness and support Autism Speaks during Autism Awareness Month.

58 the

/ FALL/WINTER 2015

Week #1 — Awareness April 1 – 8 Through Autism Awareness Month initiatives like Light It Up Blue, media outreach and coverage, partnerships with Major League Baseball, NASCAR and more, Autism Speaks has made raising awareness about autism a focus of their work. Celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 to raise awareness, publicity and momentum towards the mission. Light yourself, your chapter and your association up blue by wearing blue and also participating in Light It Up Blue throughout the month of April by assisting in lighting buildings, monuments, structures, homes, etc. blue.

Week #2 — Family Services April 9 – 15 Family services are integral to the mission of Autism Speaks. This important pillar of the mission houses the Autism Response Team, as well as providing different downloadable, free toolkits that serve as a resource for families and service providers. Local and national grant programs including the iPad Grants, AutismCares Grants, Baker Summer Camp Grants and others financially support important family services work. This team also deals with important issues surrounding safety including bullying, wandering, first responder training and water safety. While early access to care is still a large focus of the family services team, issues surrounding employment, housing and more for adults on the spectrum will also continue to be a large focus.

Week #3 — Advocacy April 16 – 22 The grassroots advocacy work of Autism Speaks primarily falls into the Autism Votes initiative. The goals of this team center on maximizing support and funding for autism issues, as well as working in local and federal government for autism insurance reform. While much has been accomplished in this arena since its inception, the advocacy work must continue both on the local and national level, to continue to keep autism at the forefront. To find out more about local initiatives in your area visit www.autismvotes.org.

Week #4 — Research April 23 – 30 The focus of our last week of Autism Awareness Month will be on the important work of the science team in research. As the guiding tenet of Autism Speaks mission, funding global biomedical research is integral to the work that Autism Speaks does day in and day out. More than $560 million has been invested in the mission of Autism Speaks, with the majority of that being put towards research. Along with funding research, Autism Speaks is also collaborating on important projects like MSSNG with Google and continuing to focus on the best world-wide science has to offer.

Mark Your Calendar: May 1, 2016 is the deadline for philanthropy reports and all donations! alphaxidelta.org 59
