elebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks on the Boston Harbor, taking in the historic sites of one of America’s oldest cities and catching up with hundreds of Sisters – what a fantastic way to cap off this wonderful ride as your National President. If you were unable to join us in Boston for our 51st National Convention, we have compiled a photo essay highlighting each day’s most memorable events. You can check it out on page 14. If you’ve never attended a National Convention, you don’t know what you are missing! It is such a fun experience to meet with other Alpha Xi Deltas and see the love and common bond we all share. Mark your calendars now for Convention 2017! We are headed to Chicago from July 5-8, 2017 and staying at the Chicago Marriott Downtown on Michigan Avenue. I’m already looking forward to it!

Sandi Edwards with National President Michele Herbst Evink during the Rose Banquet at the 2015 National Convention.

Every summer we welcome a new team of Educational Leadership Consultants and Leadership Coaches to our staff. These women are recent graduates who hit the road for a year to travel to Alpha Xi Delta chapters to assist with chapter development, officer transition or recruitment planning. We are so thrilled to have them join our team, and you can meet them on page 8. I would also like to take this moment to introduce you to Michele Herbst Evink, South Dakota State ’86, who is your new National President. Michele is the Director of Pharmacy Services at Clarke County Hospital in Iowa and holds a variety of leadership roles in her industry and community. Michele’s passion for Alpha Xi Delta, coupled with her leadership skills, will serve the Fraternity well during her term as National President. I am also excited to welcome our 2015-2017 National Vice

Presidents. You can meet National Council on page 32. As I wrap up my last National President’s letter, I want to send a heartfelt thank you to all the Sisters I have met on this incredible journey. Whether it was via this letter or one of the chapter installations I attended during my terms, thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing the wonderful strides Alpha Xi Delta will make in this upcoming biennium!

Loyally,

Sandi Edwards Past National President

Want to see how much fun all of our chapters are having during this fall recruitment season? Use our fall recruitment hashtag “#AXiDFall” and you could be featured on one of the Fraternity’s social media pages.

Licensed Vendors In an effort to promote the Fraternity in a positive light at all times, Alpha Xi Deltas must purchase Greek merchandise only from the approved list of licensed vendors. These vendors pay royalties to Alpha Xi Delta for the opportunity to manufacture products bearing our trademarks, and this revenue benefits Alpha Xi Delta each year. Finding licensed vendors is easy. Just look for the Greek Licensed Product logo in stores or visit www. greekslicensing.com to see a list of all licensed vendors in your area.

Member Recommendation Form Do you know a young woman headed off to college? Recommending her to Alpha Xi Delta has never been easier! Information provided by alumnae and other members of Alpha Xi Delta will help the chapter recognize Alpha Xi Delta legacies and select strong women for membership in our organization. If you know an outstanding young woman who will be going through recruitment this year at a university that has an Alpha Xi Delta chapter, please fill out a Member Recommendation Form. Remember, the more information that a chapter has about a potential member the better. Member Recommendation Forms must be received by August 1 for all fall recruiting chapters and January 1 for all spring recruiting chapters. This will ensure the chapter has plenty of time to receive and review your form before formal recruitment begins. Visit www.alphaxidelta.org/MRF to fill out member recommendation form today.

NHC: ALL ABOUT THAT SPACE

ALL ABOUT THAT

Space

ARTWORK Thoughtfully choosing artwork that complements your color palette will make your space look cohesive and polished.

PINK ROSES Using a small arrangement of pink roses is a nice way to tie in Alpha Xi Delta’s symbols.

PILLOW Accent pillows are a great way to use on-trend fabrics and bold prints without breaking the bank. Make sure you keep your sofas and chairs neutral so that you can continue to switch out updated patterns throughout time.

AWARDS Celebrate your chapter’s accomplishments by proudly displaying awards in an attractive display cabinet or on a side table.

DECORATING 101

Do’s

• Choose neutral, quality items that will withstand continuous wear and trends. • Stay traditional. • Use Alpha Xi Delta symbols and colors moderately. • Use cohesive pops of color to make your color palette interesting. • Incorporate sitting areas for studying and socializing. • Schedule and budget for regular updates by changing out smaller accent pieces.

Dont’s • Don’t skimp on artwork. It makes a big impact! • Don’t place all the furniture around the perimeter of the room. • Don’t overuse double blue and gold, roses and teddy bears. • Don’t use a hodge-podge look. Plan your design thoughtfully!

Tips • Fabrics rated at 100,000 + double rubs will withstand wear the best. • Use taupes, beiges, grays, sisals and sea grasses for a neutral color palette. • Check out other facilities on campus to stay competitive.

TOPIARY Elevate your space by adding traditional accents like topiaries, tasteful small flower arrangements and vases. 12 the

/ SUMMER 2015

• The National Housing Corporation (NHC) must approve your design prior to you purchasing items.

COMPOSITE Instead of keeping all your old composites, take high quality images of each composite, save it and print one copy for your scrapbook. After you take out the photos, break down the composite and recycle the remaining pieces.

• The NHC can partner with local building corporations and chapters to purchase items at deep discounts! Questions? Contact Jennifer Foster, Director of Housing, at jfoster@alphaxidelta.org.

During Thursday’s General Session, Glennon encouraged the audience to step out from behind masks of perfection and start connecting with one another by showing up as our real, messy and beautiful selves.

Thursday’s events capped off with the Welcome Banquet. This year, we maintained our tradition of sitting by chapter, but also had everyone grouped by state. This allowed attendees to still sit with their chapter Sisters, but also opened up the opportunity to meet other Sisters (and perhaps school rivals) at nearby chapters.

Dr. Angela Hewlett, Texas ’94, was one of three women honored as the 2015 Woman of Distinction. In a nomination form, a Sister wrote this about Angela: “She excelled, and her thirst for knowledge was insatiable, culminating in being selected as the outstanding senior medical student in internal medicine. After completing medical school, she began her residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, winning many awards during her residency years and ultimately being selected as internal medicine’s chief resident.” When the Ebola outbreak hit West Africa, Angela was ready to serve, and put all of her years of training to good use. She worked countless hours with her team to treat the Ebola patient who was sent to the University of Nebraska Medical Center Biocontainment Unit.

SORRY NOT SORRY

STOP APOLOGIZING! LET YOUR CONFIDENCE

Shine By: Michelle Marchand, Mount Union ’02

A few months ago Pantene, known for their hair products and shampoo, released a commercial featuring a series of women in different roles and environments, such as at the office, in a business meeting, and at home. In each of the clips, women were seen apologizing for something that didn’t necessarily require an apology. Intended to be a women’s empowerment message as part of their “Shine Strong” campaign, the Pantene commercial focused on the inherent need many women feel to be polite and accommodating, particularly in work settings, and posed the question, “Why are women always apologizing?” They encouraged women to take back their apologies and stand firm with confidence in their actions. A quick Google search will land you on page after page and article after article on the topic of women and confidence. Many authors relate apologizing to self-confidence, or a lack thereof, and the way girls are socialized from a young age. Kathryn D. Cramer, author of Lead Positive: What Highly Effective Leaders See, Say, and Do asserts that women are taught from an early age to focus on relationships and nurturing. Apologizing before speaking is one way that women soften communication so as not to appear too assertive or aggressive. Sylvia Ann Hewlett, founder of the Center for Talent Innovation, adds, “Using ‘sorry’ frequently undermines our gravitas and makes them appear unfit for leadership.” It’s important to point out that apologies are not a bad thing, but relying on an “I’m sorry” as a sentence starter to every question

30 the

/ SUMMER 2015

or statement a woman makes negates her ability to appear confident to others and, more importantly, to believe in her own knowledge, skills, and experience. As we dive into the complexities of confidence, a connection to society’s expectations emerges and sheds additional light on the challenges in front of us. Our collegiate women are no strangers to the expectations that others have of them. Consider the messages they hear on a daily basis from the media, from their college or university, and from their friends and family–do this, go here, act like that, don’t say this, remember to… They’re challenged to be friendly yet reserved, talkative but not gossipy, outgoing yet composed, intelligent but not nerdy. With so many mixed messages, young women are falling into a people-pleasing trap for fear that confidence and assertiveness will be viewed as overly masculine or too emotional. If these challenges aren’t addressed during the formative college years, they can follow us well into adulthood and emerge in our workplace interactions, neighborhood playdates, and volunteer roles. Admittedly, it is difficult to go into every situation feeling confident with what you need to do and how to handle it, and taking unnecessary “I’m sorry’s” out of your language will take time to master, but the confidence gap for many women is alive and real and it will take a concerted effort among all of us to address and change it. One important message for our collegiate women to hear is that they are not alone in the questions, doubts

and challenges they face. Often times, especially in the age of social media and Photoshop, it can be easy to think you’re the only person that feels this way, the only one questioning what you should do or how you should act or look, but it’s essential to know that you’re not alone. We all have our struggles with self-confidence. The beauty of being connected to a strong group of women, such as your chapter or alumnae association, is that we can all support and build each other up. The opportunity to include alumnae and advisors in mentoring relationships with collegiate women is a benefit to all parties involved and opens us up to authentic conversations about the struggles and successes we face when it comes to confidence.

Part of realizing your potential as a woman and as an Alpha Xi Delta is being comfortable in who you are and owning it, playing to your strengths and focusing on what you bring to the table instead of what you don’t. Take the time to recognize the women in your life for what they do well. Draw attention to their unique talents and celebrate the contributions they make to your chapter, association and community. Don’t be afraid to leap outside of your comfort zone and go after the experiences and opportunities that scare you but excite you. As Eleanor Roosevelt implored us, “We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face. We must do that which we think we cannot.” Don’t apologize for who you are – let your confidence shine for all the world to see.

SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION PROGRAM

SEXUAL ASSAULT

ALPHA XI DELTAS ARE TAKING A STAND Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity and other interfraternal organizations are taking a stand against sexual assault and relational aggression with the development of a new educational program for college students. Recognizing that everyone plays a role in preventing sexual assault violence and creating a safer social culture, 10 fraternities and sororities have already signed on to roll out the program nationwide, led by Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Sigma Nu fraternity. Inter/national Sororities include Delta Zeta, Pi Beta Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha. Inter/national Fraternities include Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha Order, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Tau and Sigma Nu. To develop a comprehensive approach to prevention, the groups worked with Aaron Boe, the founder of Prevention Culture, which specializes in non-stranger sexual assault and relational violence prevention, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention. The program aims to equip collegians with the tools necessary to create safe and supportive chapter cultures. It covers topics including healthy standards for personal relationships, misconceptions about non-stranger sexual assault, intervention techniques for complicated social situations and ways to support a victim/survivor. Each group has worked with Boe to customize the program and implementation options to meet its organizational needs.

/ SUMMER 2015

Alpha Xi Delta will be utilizing a select group of volunteers and staff to facilitate these important conversations throughout the academic year. A component of Area Wide Training (college officer training) will be focused on the continued implementation of the materials at the chapter level and will serve to promote dialog among our college women and those who support them. “Alpha Xi Delta is proud to partner with our fraternal brothers and sisters to take this critical step toward preventing sexual assault on college campuses. We are committed to educating and supporting our members about sexual assault so that they are empowered to be advocates for healthy relationships and a safe culture,” said Elysia Gallivan, Alpha Xi Delta’s National Executive Director. In the recent past, undergraduate chapters have utilized Alpha Xi Delta’s Realize Your Potential Program, our CARE Program and campus resources to educate themselves on topics of healthy relationships and sexual assault prevention. We are proud to be able to provide programming that addresses critical issues and fosters honest dialog in an environment that can only be created when Sisters come together for their interpersonal and intellectual growth. Throughout the upcoming issues of The Quill, we will continue to update our readers about this program and its impact on our Sisters.

ALUMNAE SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

Alumnae Survey HIGHLIGHTS This summer we asked Alpha Xi Delta alumnae to give their feedback to assist the Fraternity with enhancing the alumnae experience. Here’s a special preview of the results. We’ll share more in the fall/winter issue of The Quill, so stay tuned! • More than 4,600 women accessed the survey. Highest percentage (19%) of participants were ages 24-29. Chapters with largest percentage of response: Alpha Eta Chapter, Purdue University and Kappa Chapter, University of Illinois.

• Alumnae living in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participated. The state with the highest participation rate? Ohio! • 57% of women listed Sisterhood—the hope of meaningful lifelong relationships as the #1 reason they joined Alpha Xi Delta. • 700 women indicated they plan to seek out membership in an alumnae association. • 76% of respondents give The Quill more than just a glance.

What are Sisters saying? “I received two scholarships that helped pay for my master’s degree. Those scholarships are the reason I am committed to giving to the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation!”

“Everyone goes through life looking for the one person they want to spend the rest of their life with. I found a hundred.”

“I am proud that Alpha Xi Delta continues to be a strong Sisterhood, upholding high standards while reaching out with compassion and support through our philanthropy. The greatest inspiration is to gather with multiple generations of Alpha Xi Deltas, from the newest members to those who have attained the Order of the Rose, all of whom share a common bond.”

Jacquelyn J. Lyerly, Alpha Deuteron ’95, 1935 – 2015

Alpha Xi Delta is sad to share the passing of Jacquelyn (Jackie) Lyerly, Alpha Deuteron ’95, on June 19, 2015. Jackie retired from Alpha Xi Delta in 2011 after 26 years of service to the Fraternity. During her career at FHQ, Jackie greeted countless Educational Leadership Consultants, worked with eight National Presidents and numerous volunteers. In an article published in the summer 2011 issue of The Quill, Jackie said her favorite Alpha Xi Delta memory was her alumna initiation at the 1995 Convention in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Jackie was a wonderful and generous person who loved music, good food and a good book. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she will be missed.

FOUNDATION

why I give Wendy Kurtz Levine, Indiana ’05 Why do you love Alpha Xi Delta? Through Alpha Xi Delta I have made wonderful friends, found a rewarding career in business and developed leadership skills. It has become such an important part of my life, and I can’t imagine not being a part of this amazing Sisterhood of women. Why do you give to the Foundation? Alpha Xi Delta has given me so much opportunity and personal growth, starting in college and in the twenty years since graduation. Giving to the Foundation is my way of giving back, of helping the next generation of Alpha Xi Deltas realize their potential. You are giving generously to the Leadership Coach Program. Why are you passionate about the Leadership Coach Program? I am passionate about helping others discover and leverage their strengths, so they can become the best version of themselves. The Leadership Coach Program is a fantastic way for undergraduates to get started on this journey of self-discovery and self-development. They will strengthen their leadership skills, which will benefit them in college and as they begin their careers.

The Founders’ Challenge Realizes Success Why do you give to the Foundation? In 2014, the Foundation introduced The Founders’ Challenge, an opportunity for you to give back to the organization that has given us all so much. Your generous gift — whether the few dollars you would have spent on a cup of coffee or something more – furthers the dreams of our Founders. The 2015 Founders’ Challenge was very successful, with gifts from 474 alumnae and collegiate Sisters totaling $39,610!

Foundation Scholarship Program Update The Foundation will award more than $100,000 in scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year to 52 undergraduates and 15 alumnae. The Foundation sends a special THANK YOU to the scholarship committee chairs, Martha Geppert, Illinois ’81; Bobby Stanton, Kentucky ’65; and their dedicated committee members: Ann Adams, Nebraska-Lincoln ’66; Kristin Billingsley, Sonoma State ’94; Stacey Cummins, Southeast Missouri ’94; Linda Dettmer, Baldwin Wallace ’69; Brittany Donatelli, Slippery Rock ’08; Rebekah Druetzler, Purdue ’79; Kathleen Duffy, Georgia Tech ’06; Jane Gaby, Tennessee-Knoxville ’70; Jennifer Gianino, Southeast Missouri ’94; Jody Halley, Baldwin Wallace ’89; Sharon Hessoun, Baldwin Wallace ’62; Nicole KuzminNichols, Case Western Reserve ’92; Michelle Marchand, Mount Union ’02; Sara Molnar, Ferris State ’64; Kimberly Nelson, Marietta ’06; Jane Schroeder, Nebraska-Lincoln ’81; and Nicole Valdes, Central Florida ’07. “Our 2015 scholarship recipients represent 40 chapters nationwide with an average GPA of 3.69,” said Martha Geppert, Foundation Trustee and Scholarship Committee Chair. “We are impressed with their accomplishments and bold goals and we are excited to see how they change the future.” Go to alphaxidelta.org to view the listing of 2015 scholarship recipients.
