Thoughts from Michele
A
s I sat down to write about The Symphony, I was reminded of all the times in my life that an infinitely appropriate line appeared in my mind and applied itself to that very moment. In my time as our National President, the phrase “to bring into living reality the sisterhood of women” occurs to me the most often. Whether it is attending a centennial anniversary for a chapter, representing Alpha Xi Delta at National Panhellenic Conference’s annual conference or participating in an Autism Speaks Walk, my travels as National President bring me into so many different, and beautiful, examples of the living reality of our Sisterhood. We each play an important part in bringing this Sisterhood to the world. We have community, responsibility

and our own role in defining, evolving and growing it. We tend to it lovingly because it is living and real. It is also timeless and palpable. Sisterhood is the comfortable acceptance of each other regardless of our differences. It’s the bond that draws us together when we need to celebrate and when we need to grieve. The beautifully written stanzas of The Symphony remind us of so many things. The words are first shared with us as we join Alpha Xi Delta, and they continue with us in our hearts to spark memories of laughter, tears, ceremonies, friends, togetherness, parting and, even more, how the Fraternity itself is a symphony of our members. The Symphony, like the Fraternity, is a living thing in our lives. We are bringing into living reality the sisterhood of women, seeking a clear

I really enjoyed the series on our National Parks in the recent edition of The Quill. It brought back lots of great memories for me. I grew up in the Midwest, and I live in the West now where many of our greatest National Parks are. You had a list of 59 parks and of that list I have been to 30 of them — about half! They truly are our nation’s treasure! I also have a bucket list of 10 more I want to see. We have so much natural beauty in this country that so many people have never seen. National Hazing Prevention Week is an opportunity for campuses, schools, communities, organizations and individuals to raise awareness about the problem of hazing, educating others about hazing, and promoting the prevention of hazing. HazingPrevention.Org™ is the organizer of National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW). During 2016’s NHPW in late September, Alpha Xi Delta held an Instagram contest, one for a chapter and one for individual Sisters, to show us how they let our Sisterhood shine. We are proud to share the winning photos from the contest. The chapter winner is Delta Psi Chapter at Texas State University, and the individual winner is Katie McGraw from the Zeta Iota Chapter at Lyon College (pictured right in the photo). As a reminder, Alpha Xi Delta does not condone hazing. If you want to report a hazing incident or a suspected incident that is not immediately putting someone in danger, contact your campus security office, Fraternity Headquarters or other local designated reporting authority. Journey to an AmaXing Life My initial thoughts about going through sorority recruitment were the same as those of any potential new member. “What were the chapters going to think of me?” “What if they don’t like me?” My next thoughts were slightly different. “What if they judge me for not having hair before anyone even knew the reason why?” “What if they don’t see the potential I have?” I was coming close to completing all of my chemotherapy My maiden name was Angela Marie Garland, and > treatments for Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I immediately submersed myself in the positivity, love and support that radiated from them. It gave me the self-confidence and feeling of acceptance I needed to conquer my treatment. Everyone I talked to told me they were excited to meet me. All of the Sisters I had conversations with expressed to me how they admired the strength I had by going through recruitment. As a result, I admired their willingness to accept me for who I am and what I was going through, despite my appearance. Shortly after Bid Day, I finished my last round of chemotherapy. The moment I walked into our house was the moment I knew I had found my home for the rest of my life. A table with flowers and two giant cards signed by every Sister in the chapter awaited my arrival. I felt the meaning in every single message that had been written. I had found that support system I was looking for. I had found the feelings of love and acceptance that I had been in search of. I had truly felt that this was where I belonged. More than a year after my last round of chemotherapy and being cancer free, I have never been at as much of a high point in my life than I am right now. I would not be at this point without my Sisters. The lifelong friends I have already made have changed my life in more ways than I, or they, could possibly imagine. While I am still on my way to realizing my full potential, I know I have found the right Sisterhood to help me get there. Needless to say, it has been a journey to an amaXIng life. – Emily Bailey, Central Florida ’15

Managing stress is one of the hardest things a college student has to learn. Everyone handles it differently, so one method might not work for you. It’s important to learn how to manage your stress because it’s something we will always face regardless of our age. I manage stress through working out,
spending one hour of “me time” per week for reading or massage and essential oil diffusing. It’s an individual thing, and you have to find what works for you. - Chrissy Robertson, West Georgia ’96
Always take time for yourself — do something you love, and spend an hour or two a day doing only that. I also try alternative forms of stress relief, like aromatherapy. Right now, I’m giving negative ions a try through the use of a salt lamp. - Samantha Tuz, Virginia Commonwealth ’16

Chicago is decorated with some of the world’s tallest buildings, most amazing restaurants and incredible neighborhoods. If you think Chicago sounds exciting in text, wait until you see it in person. Outdoor concerts, summer festivals, beautiful beaches and boat tours are some of the best things about Chicago in the summertime. During Convention, Sisters will experience what this magnificent city has to offer while forming new friendships and catching up with dear friends, strengthening our Alpha Xi Delta Sisterhood and making an impact on the future of our dear Fraternity.
Registration will open in early 2017, and attendees must register online via Exclusively Xi. Specific fees and packages will be announced at that time so that Sisters can make plans to join us in Chicago. Information about how to register and packages will be posted on alphaxideltaconvention.org. All members of Alpha Xi Delta, their friends and families are invited to attend National Convention. Those who are eligible to vote during Convention include collegiate and alumnae association delegates.
OUR HOTEL Chicago’s top attractions — Navy Pier, American Girl Place, Millennium Park, theaters and museums — are just a short walk from the Chicago Marriott Downtown, our Convention hotel location. BUSINESS MEETINGS The National Chapter meeting allows us to conduct the formal business of the National Fraternity.
INITIATION CEREMONY Initiation allows Sisters to participate in a large-scale Initiation Ceremony with attendees from across the country.
GENERAL AND EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS The purpose of educational and general sessions is to provide a time to address particular subjects. Educational program sessions are specific to the advancement of Alpha Xi Delta’s Strategic Priorities and will assist Sisters in embracing, understanding and participating in the future of the Fraternity.

Recommend a Sister for a
Leadership Position
Alpha Xi Delta’s Committee on Leadership invites you to recommend Sisters to serve on the Fraternity’s 201719 National Council, the Foundation’s 2017-21 Board of Trustees and the 2017-19 National Housing Corporation. Individual Sisters, college chapters and alumnae associations can submit recommendations to the Committee on Leadership. Members may also selfnominate. From there, the Committee on Leadership will prepare a slate of candidates for each board to be voted on at National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, July 5-8, 2017.
NATIONAL COUNCIL As the governing board of the Fraternity, National Council represents and acts for the Fraternity in all matters between meetings of the National Chapter. National Council provides leadership, oversight and guidance to fulfill the Fraternity’s vision (inspiring women to realize their potential) and mission (to enrich the life of every Alpha Xi Delta) Desired Skills: • Critical, creative thinking with the ability to look at the facts, explore potential options and solutions, and determine how a decision will impact end users, staff and host institutions • Board governance experience • Financial and business acumen; and/ or legal expertise • Higher education administration experience and/or knowledge of current college campus trends

• Nonprofit management experience with a volunteer driven organization • Strong interpersonal and organizational culture skills
FOUNDATION TRUSTEE Trustees are responsible for managing resources wisely, ensuring adequate resources and monitoring programs and services for consistency with our vision and goals. They establish prudent investment philosophies, policies and practices, approve and monitor the budget, and identify, cultivate and steward donors. Trustees are expected to be pace-setting contributors or fundraisers and to join The Society of 1893 (planned giving society) during their tenure. Desired Skills: • Solid working knowledge of finance such as accounting cash/treasury management, asset management, capital asset planning, and/or cash flows • Experience with nonprofit fundraising and ability to oversee fundraising/ development campaigns • Ability to identify potential project risks and solutions • Budget planning and monitoring • Strong interpersonal communication skills
NATIONAL HOUSING CORPORATION BOARD MEMBER National Housing Corporation board members work in conjunction with National Council on housing-related matters and
support the NHC’s mission: To strive for competitive, safe, properly maintained and financially secure chapter housing. Desired Skills: • Professional property management and/or commercial construction experience • Financial and banking acumen • Interior design experience • Deferred maintenance portfolio experience • Strong working knowledge of marketing and communications
HOW DO I MAKE A RECOMMENDATION? Fill out the online recommendation form at alphaxidelta.org/nominations. Recommendations must be received by February 15, 2017. The Committee on Leadership will review all recommendations and obtain a leadership profile from each candidate. The committee then prepares a slate of candidates whom they believe are best qualified to fulfill the responsibilities and meet the challenges of each of our three national boards. By late April 2017, the slate and candidates’ resumes will be sent to those eligible to vote at the 2017 National Convention.

Proposed Ammendments to
Alpha Xi Delta’s Constitution The Alpha Xi Delta National Chapter may amend the National Constitution when deemed advisable. As stated in Article XIII, Section 1, “This Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the National Chapter.” All proposed amendments are voted on at the National Convention held immediately following their proposal. An amendment may be sponsored by any of the following: a college chapter, an alumnae association, the Constitution Committee, National
Council, a member of National Council or a Past National President. The proposed amendment should state in which article and section it should be placed, and it should be stated in language appropriate to the Constitution. If the proposed amendment conflicts with an existing statement, the sponsor(s) is responsible for proposing additional amendments to resolve the conflict or the proposal will be void. If two proposals conflict with each other, the National
Woman of Distinction WOMAN OF DISTINCTION AWARDS The Woman of Distinction Award recognizes alumnae who exhibit excellence and extraordinary leadership in their professions and careers or in service to their communities. Nominees should be widely recognized within their field of service to be considered for this award. Any Alpha Xi Delta alumna in good standing is eligible to receive this award and does not have to be a current members of an organized alumnae association. Nominations can be made by: • Individuals • College chapters • Alumnae associations • Advisory boards • Housing corporations
Women of Distinction award recipients will be honored at Alpha Xi Delta’s 2017 National Convention in Chicago. Chapter at Convention may vote to accept only one of the proposals, or it may vote to reject both. Any proposed amendments to the Constitution must be received by National Executive Director Elysia Gallivan by February 5, 2017, to be considered at the 2017 National Convention. The amendments will then be passed on to the Constitution Committee for review.

IN WITH THE NEW
Chapter facilities do more than just house our Sisters. They serve as a place to foster new friendships, host late-night study sessions, carry out inspiring philanthropic events, reunite alumnae and so much more. This past summer, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) charged full steam ahead to ensure our Sisters at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Michigan State University and Bowling Green State University were able to move in for the 2016 fall semester. These projects were no small feat! In the case of Bowling Green State University, this was a new construction completed by the university for its Greek housing project. The NHC assisted with furnishing and decorating the space. UW-Madison and Michigan State, saw complete overhauls of existing structures that the NHC modified to fit the needs for a chapter house. They now have large, open spaces for groups of Sisters to gather, quiet spots to study, enough space to eat dinner together and so much more. BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY Due to the opening of Bowling Green State University’s new Greek housing, the Beta Mu Chapter moved into its new home this fall alongside fellow fraternity and sorority members. The new building features a full-sized kitchen, single and double bedrooms, single and communal bathrooms, a chapter room and a courtyard. Jill Bortel, who has served as Beta Mu’s Chapter Advisor for 43 years, worked with the National Housing Corporation to furnish the space.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON In September, 47 women from the Theta Chapter moved into their new home at 615 Howard Place in Madison, Wisconsin. This completely renovated facility features a spiral staircase, a heritage room, study spaces and informal spaces for Sisters to relax. “The National Housing Corporation is extremely proud of the new Theta Chapter house at UW-Madison, and we hope it will continue to build and strengthen the bond of the chapter,” said Chrissy Robertson, Alpha Xi Delta’s NHC President.

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY The Alpha Xi Delta National Housing Corporation (NHC) welcomed 43 Sisters home to a brand new chapter facility this fall at Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, Michigan. It is home to the Beta Theta Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta. In November 2015, Alpha Xi Delta announced a partnership with Sixty North Ventures LLC to lease its property at 855 Grove Street in East Lansing, Michigan. This facility features a gorgeous living room, a beautiful dining space and a Spartan themed library. “My first impression of the house was that it looked incredible. Living Our Symphony THESE THINGS DO WE EARNESTLY DESIRE By Lauren Blankenbaker Felts, Indiana ‘03
Do you remember the day you joined Alpha Xi Delta? We all joined Alpha Xi Delta for personal reasons, but we all have benefitted in one way or another from this special circle of Sisterhood through lifelong friendships, support systems and mentors. One thing all Sisters can identify with is The Symphony. It was selected by a committee of three Sisters, Helen Willis Lynn, Almira Cheney and Alice Matthews, and was approved in 1924. Since its inception, The Symphony has resonated with Sisters because of its regard for a positive expression of high moral standards, its commitment to leading a purposeful life and the lifelong appreciation of the bonds of Sisterhood. Throughout this feature, Sisters and friends have shared their personal stories, and we can see how The Symphony of Alpha Xi Delta is still relevant today – more than 90 years after its inception.

A clear vision of life, that with gracious and kindly hearts we may share both joy and sorrow… When Kristin Smith Martin met Jennifer Mogel Partner on Bid Day in 1997 at the University of Delaware, she could have never guessed this budding new friendship would eventually turn into a life-changing bond. After college graduation, Kristin and Jen remained close with their circle of Alpha Xi Delta friends. Kristin went on to marry Jeff, and Jen began her next chapter as well. The two friends kept in close contact and supported each other through life’s next steps. In 2007, Kristin and Jeff decided it was time to begin their family. Over the next 10 years, Kristin and Jeff struggled with infertility, multiple surgeries and miscarriages, including the loss of a baby during the second trimester in 2012. After this loss, they were devastated, but did not give up on their dream to start a family. The couple met with a high-risk pregnancy doctor in New York City to discuss their options and next steps, but shortly before that appointment Kristin had received a supportive note from Jen in the mail. Except this note wasn’t just a normal “thinking of you” card. It was an offer from Jen to be Kristin’s surrogate.
“She had been very supportive all along up until this point. She had mailed me a card that said this is what I want to do for you. I cleared it with my husband, Josh, he’s on board with it, you’re great with kids and you deserve this. I want this for you,” Kristin said. At the appointment in New York City, Kristin’s doctor said she and Jeff could try again to get pregnant, but the safest and most guaranteed option was to use a carrier who has had successful pregnancies before. Kristin knew she had an offer from Jen to be a surrogate, but it would take months before she and Jeff were emotionally ready to take that leap of faith. “I had to give up on the hope and faith that I was never going to be able to carry and have that experience. But, all along deep down inside, I knew Jen was the best route,” said Kristin. After the decision was made to have Jen be the surrogate, Jen, Josh, Kristin and Jeff sat down to discuss the details. “The first question Jen asked me was, “Do you know anyone that has done this before…that has had a carrier?” I kept thinking…no, only celebrities. It’s kind of taboo – no one really talks about it. Infertility is such a hush-hush type of thing because it is so private,” Kristin said. The surrogacy process is long and involves insurance, psychological tests, meetings with social workers and legal counsel, but Jen and Josh were on board. They had the first embryo transferred, but it wasn’t successful.

“I remember thinking ‘great, now she’s mixed into our bag of bad luck.’ She never had any difficulty getting pregnant previously,” Kristin said. But, Josh and Jen were on board and wanted to do it again after the failed first attempt. In a final attempt, two embryos were transferred in July of 2015. “This was literally the last-ditch attempt for me, for our insurance, our finances, emotionally and mentally. And both babies implanted,” Kristin said. As soon as the nurse called them to let them know Jen had a positive pregnancy test, Kristin knew they made the right decision. She and her husband were elated, but also in a bit of disbelief. They tried not to let their emotions get the best of them and went through the series of checklists. Blood work was good — check. 3-D ultrasounds look good — check. The babies were developing on schedule — check.
It wasn’t until January 2016 when things started to get more and more real for Kristin and her husband that the babies would be coming soon and that they were finally in the home stretch of this long, emotional journey. In March 2016, at 38 weeks, Jen gave birth to twins, Gavin and Nina. A moment they had dreamed about and envisioned for 10 years. “Gavin came first, and I kept telling Jen how cute he was. When I held him, I said, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s so content with me.’ Josh, Jen’s husband, was behind me and said, ‘That’s because he’s with his mom,’” Kristin said. For Sisters who may be experiencing infertility, Kristin shared this piece of advice, “If you want it bad enough, fight for it and continue. Try every avenue possible and never give up. If a doctor tells you that a surrogate is the safest and most guaranteed option, go for it. You can’t risk your own health for something that could potentially harm you.” “Had it not been for Alpha Xi Delta, I don’t know if I would have ever known Jen. Who would have been able to foretell that 19 years later she would be having my babies? The stars definitely aligned,” Kristin said.

And bring into living reality the sisterhood of women. The Sisterhood of Alpha Xi Delta is present in many areas of a member’s life. It’s felt during the new friendships you form on Bid Day. It’s in the after-work meet ups your first year post-college. It’s in the play dates where you and your children get to spend quality time together away from life’s every day hustle and bustle. It’s in the alumnae association where you form bonds with women from all walks of life. And, one of the biggest places our Sisterhood is present is in our partnership with Autism Speaks. The amount of passion, drive and support our Sisterhood has for Autism Speaks is shown every day through the AmaXIng Challenges hosted on college campuses, the teams of Sisters walking and volunteering at Autism Speaks Walk events and the amount of time and talent Sisters are using to fundraise for our partners. It’s always a unique perspective to receive feedback on how others outside of Alpha Xi Delta view our Sisterhood. Do they feel it and see it, too? Or, is it unique to just our Sisters? Kerry Magro is an award winning national speaker, best-selling author, movie consultant and role model in the disabled community. Non-verbal at two years old and diagnosed with autism at age four, Kerry has overcome countless obstacles to get to where he is today. A masters graduate from Seton Hall University, he currently is CEO and founder of KFM Making a Difference, a non-profit corporation focused on disability advocacy and housing. And, he has penned an open letter to Alpha Xi Deltas everywhere.
Dear Alpha Xi Delta, One message I share a lot about is the importance of having a “village.” In our autism community, it is often a person with autism’s parents, family, teachers and therapists who become part of that village. Just like no individual with autism is the same, you can say the exact same thing about every person’s village. Today, I want to share with you, though, that you will always have a place as part of my village for what’ve you done. It was in 2009 that I first learned about your work to help raise awareness and funds for those with autism like me. I would see photos of your members at Autism Speaks Walk events on Facebook, doing volunteer work at different autism schools, participating in Coaches Powering Forward for Autism events to spread autism awareness in college basketball and then, as if that wasn’t enough, spreading awareness for those with autism on national television for World Autism Awareness Day. Your work didn’t stop there. Just last year you showed me an act of kindness when you shared with me that you were making me a “FOX.” At first I didn’t know what FOX meant
until one day I decided to look it up. “Friend of Xi” it read on your website. It made me a fan of your fraternity even more. While reading more about your Fraternity over the years, seeing that you’ve grown to more than 150,000 members, become a national sponsor for our Autism Speaks Walk program, and then have raised more than $5 million to support our cause, it has made me realize the lasting impact you’ll continue to have for years to come. But you’ve become so much more than just a village to people like me who are on the spectrum. You’ve become a part of my autism community family. Each one of your members has shown me kindness and respect. Something I think we can all show a lot more of just for anyone in this world. If you ever read this, I just want to say thank you. In college I joined a national service fraternity to help others. While I was a brother in that fraternity, I learned so much about the importance of giving back — like you all have done for so many. My life changed forever just 10 years ago on May 13, 2006. That was the day that I became a mom for the very first time, something I had dreamt about since I was a little girl. I had planned for and anticipated my “perfect” baby girl for pretty much my entire life. I envisioned what she would look like and how perfect life would be with her in my arms. Everything I would teach her and how our love would grow as she grew consumed my mind. What I didn’t realize in those dreams is that perfect baby girl would be born with Down syndrome and would teach me more than I could ever teach her. My daughter, Kayla, has more kindness, compassion, determination, confidence, spunk, intelligence, beauty and love in her 10-year-old body than most adults I know. And while this is my reality today, it didn’t start like this. Our first days together were filled with fear, questions and what ifs with so many unknowns. Will she have friends? Will she go to prom? Will she drive? Will she go to college? Will she get married? These questions filled my mind and paralyzed me. Luckily, a very wise doctor calmed my fears by sharing with me that no new mom

knows what their child will be able to do in their future. He stated that all we can do is love and support our babies to become the best they can be. And so, that became my mission. As Kayla was growing and thriving as a baby, we quickly realized so many cards were stacked against her and her friends with disabilities. Many rights that we take for granted are not afforded to individuals with disabilities. How could this be? How could the largest minority population in the United States be overlooked? How could they be forgotten? One very basic right Kayla didn’t have was the right to save money. Kayla couldn’t receive monetary gifts for her birthdays or Christmas. She couldn’t save for college or her future without risking losing her state-provided medical benefits. At the time, any individual with benefits could not have more than $2,000 in assets, or they would risk losing those benefits. So, think about that for a minute. How could anyone with a disability get not just a job, but a career? The answer is simple — if they needed medical benefits and the company didn’t provide them or they didn’t work fulltime to qualify for them, they couldn’t. People have been forced to live below their fullest potential for far too long because of this antiquated law. Together with my husband, Kayla, other amazing parents and the National Down Syndrome Society, we began lobbying for what would become known as the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act. We spent numerous hours
in Washington, D.C. meeting with our senators and congressman. Realizing this was Kayla’s story to tell and Kayla’s ask, we brought her to every single meeting. As she grew, we created a website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts that she now updates. Our purpose was to show politicians the little girl who was impacted by this out-of-date law. This experience has truly allowed Kayla to gain a voice for herself and her friends. For seven long years, we advocated for the ABLE Act to be passed. We drove back and forth from Delaware to Washington, D.C., at every given opportunity to ensure the ABLE Act would become a reality. The ABLE Act passed through the House with 404 yays to 17 nays and went on to be passed in the Senate the following week. It was the most bipartisan, bicameral bill before the 113th Congress. Christmas came early for our family on December 19, 2014, when President Barack Obama signed the ABLE Act into law. In life, there are moments we never forget, and this was one of them. I was able to exhale knowing that we were one step closer to improved financial freedom for Kayla and all of her friends. The ABLE Act, in my opinion, is not perfect, but it is a great start to allow individuals with disabilities to save up to $100,000 in an account, similar to a college savings plan, without losing their medical benefits. We were able to celebrate the passage of the law with Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. While this was an absolute highlight of the process, having it signed into law in our home state of Delaware as Kayla’s Bill was the moment we truly realized the impact we were able to make as a family for individuals with
disabilities. As Delaware’s ABLE Act (HB 60) was amended to be named Kayla’s Law and passed unanimously, I was left speechless with tears streaming down my face. All of the first hours holding my baby filled with fear...those first days that were filled with questions...this was the moment I realized why I was entrusted with such an incredibly special gift. We could have allowed the diagnosis to define Kayla and allowed it to become an excuse of all that she can’t or won’t do. Instead, we chose to focus on everything she can do and will do. Focusing on the positive has impacted her life in the best way possible. Because of her mindset, determination and hard work, she has achieved everything she sets her mind to. Kayla recognizes she has to work harder than her peers, and she is fully aware her extra magical 21st chromosome makes her uniquely her, but it will not stop her from achieving greatness. What I have learned in these 10 short years is Down syndrome is not what most people picture. Many people express their sorrow when they learn I have a child with Down syndrome. Here is the truth…I’m not sorry. I’m actually overjoyed, for I am the lucky one. And while I thought at first this diagnosis was a misfortune within my journey, having Kayla was and always will be one of my greatest successes. When Karyn decided to join Alpha Xi Delta in 1998, she was mainly looking for a way to get involved and meet new friends. The year she joined, Karyn was paired with a twin sister, Julie Walls Krolak. It wasn’t until their second year in Alpha Xi Delta that they really developed a strong friendship through bonding over Homecoming skit practice, late night Slurpee runs and living together. Down the road, Julie even became the Godmother to Karyn’s second child. In 2000, Karyn met Cari Mutnick as a potential new member during recruitment. They met several days during recruitment week and both knew they would be in each other’s lives forever. Through conversations, Karyn and Cari realized they were from the same hometown, attended the same high school and later found out that their mothers worked together and were friends as well. Cari became Karyn’s Little Sister. In the fall of 2003, Julie’s real little sister, Carolyn Walls Coker, also joined the chapter, and that same year their mother, Layne Dallett Walls, was initiated with Carolyn’s member class as an alumna initiate. With all the things Karyn, Julie, Cari and Carolyn went through together in college at the University of Central Florida, nothing compared to the challenges the four of them would face with their fathers’ health in the coming years.
Cari’s story: A self-less donation It was the spring of 2005 when my life was changed forever. I had just gotten back to my New York City apartment from a trip to Las Vegas with some of my Alpha Xi Sisters. Unfortunately, my life wasn’t changed because I won big, but it was because my parents broke the news. My father had a chronic kidney disease and would eventually need a kidney transplant. There were so many questions in my mind at the moment, and I immediately began researching his options. Upon finishing graduate school, I knew I needed to be closer to my family and friends. My Sisters were there for me every step of the way, even though they did not truly know what I was going through. My father was listed on the transplant wait

list for a kidney in December 2009. Unfortunately, with more than 93,000 people on the kidney transplant waiting list, the wait for an organ transplant can be 5-10 years, and many lives are lost while waiting. It was at that moment I knew what I wanted to do — be a living kidney donor. My friends all supported the decision to undergo an evaluation to be my father’s living kidney donor and on my birthday, March 23, 2010, I received the great news that I was going to be able to donate. Not too long after my journey toward becoming a living donor began, I received word from Julie regarding her father. He was facing liver failure, and he, too, would need a transplant. I tried to give her as much information and support as I could. July 2, 2010, was my surgery day. I successfully underwent surgery to donate my kidney to my father. My Sisters came to the hospital and even gave me a special vase filled with pink roses and a teddy bear. I don’t have a biological sister, so having my sorority Sisters, especially my Big Sister Karyn, supporting me truly helped me through this difficult time. It was an emotional roller coaster, but we got through it. I woke up from surgery and knew I wanted to live my life to the fullest. Since donating my kidney, I’ve traveled the world, gone on mission trips and have become physically fit to compete in various triathlons, half marathons, and a century bike ride.
Julie and Carolyn’s story: A second chance For some people, like Cari’s father, organ failure happens slowly over a number of years. For others, like our dad, things can progress very quickly once they become sick. Two months after Julie’s wedding in
August 2009, our dad became ill and started what felt like the endless testing and blood work to figure out what was wrong. He received a diagnosis of cirrhosis of unknown origin, and less than five months after becoming sick he was placed at the top of the liver transplant list. “Luckily” for us, the average wait time for a liver is less than six months, much less time than Cari and Karyn’s fathers had to wait. But with how quickly our dad became sick, it was still very scary to wonder if he was going to receive one in time. In April 2010, we received the first call that a liver was going to be available for our dad. It was the day before Easter, and we were elated. He and our mom arrived at the hospital in the middle of the night so the doctors could begin prepping him for surgery. Unfortunately, after hours of waiting, the liver was found to be not viable and our dad went back onto the list. It’s hard to put into words the feelings associated with having a loved one on an organ donation waiting list. You want them to get better, but if they get too much better, they will be bumped down or taken off the list all together, which can be tough because they still are not really well. Of course, you do not really want them to get sicker than they are, but if they do, then they may be bumped up higher or to the top of the list. Also, you know that while the day you get the call your dad will be receiving a donated organ will be one of the best days of your life, there is another family saying goodbye to a loved one on one of the worst days of their lives. On May 13, 2010, we received the second call that our dad would be receiving his transplant. Thankfully, we had our Sisters to lean on throughout the surgery, and we were able to talk and text with them throughout the day. His surgery went amazingly well, as did his recovery. He was back to work 12 weeks later, feeling better than ever, and hit the major milestone of five years post-transplant last May. We thank God every day that our dad’s donor thought of others, and we know that without them, our dad would not have been here for Carolyn’s wedding in 2013 or the birth of his two grandchildren. Little did we know during our journey that it would soon be Karyn’s turn to lean on us. What are the chances of all four of us going through this with our fathers? What especially tugged at our hearts were the chances of all three fathers receiving organs in time.
Karyn’s story: A new heart My father’s story started so long ago that I can barely remember it. I was in elementary school when my father had his first and second heart attacks at ages 37 and 38. His third heart attack came when I was in high school. In 2006, two months after he walked me down the aisle at my wedding, he was given a pacemaker. The pacemaker helped for several years, but too much damage had been done to his heart. In February 2015, after 30 years of heart disease and several medical procedures, my father’s amazing cardiologist sent him to be evaluated as a candidate for a heart transplant. We were fortunate the transplant team quickly recognized how dire his situation was. On May 10, 2015, we received a call that there might be a viable heart donor and to stay close to the phone. Unfortunately, the heart was not a viable match. One week later, on May 17, 2015, we received another call. There was another potential match that was local, so my father had to head to the hospital. Living three hours away, I hopped in the car so I could be there when he was taken for surgery. The next morning, he was taken to the operating room to be prepped for surgery. After waiting two hours, we found out the heart was not viable. It is a terrible feeling, hoping that this will be the one, all while knowing that your hopes mean a devastating loss for someone else. On May 23, 2015, almost five years to the day that Julie and Carolyn’s dad received his liver transplant, my father received his donor heart. This was a day full of emotions: a day of joy that my father’s health would improve, sadness and appreciation for the donor family who had to say goodbye to their loved one, anxiety as we waited to hear the news of how the surgery went, and extreme gratitude for all of the physicians, nurses and staff who would become family. His recovery was not an easy one. There were several complications that required him to remain sedated for 15 days. We would face issues surrounding a new heart that didn’t quite

beat the way it needed to, pneumonia, blood clots, a second surgery to remove the machine that helped his heart beat, a punctured lung, kidney stones and a tracheotomy. His muscles had atrophied and he needed to go to rehab to relearn to walk and feed himself. My father fought hard, and nearly five months after his transplant he completed a 5K for Organ and Tissue Donation. My Alpha Xi Sisters were there the whole time. Julie brought bags of food to the waiting room to ensure we would eat. Cari was the first person I called when things didn’t go as we thought they would. They and several other Sisters and friends checked in frequently. They assured me that the things we were experiencing were all part of the healing process. We bonded as Sisters years ago at the University of Central Florida, but we truly bonded in this experience that no others can understand. We all participate annually in the GR8 to DON8 Race for Organ Donation and the Life Alliance for Organ and Tissue donation 5K. Our fathers are doing great, and we have committed ourselves to spreading the word about the importance of organ donation. We would have never thought when we met each other, so
many years ago, that we would have forged lifelong friendships that would allow us to be there for each other through such a tough time in our lives.

These things, O Lord, help us to instill within our hearts, that we may grow in courage and graciousness and peace. Stacy Hurt, Penn State ’91, got the surprise of her life, the kind no one wishes for, on her 44th birthday. Stacy had been having symptoms of abdominal pain, irregular bowel movements and bleeding for several months, but brushed them off. After the pain became too much to bear, her husband insisted she see a doctor. A colonoscopy was scheduled to help the doctors get a better understanding of Stacy’s symptoms, and the worst-case scenario was confirmed on September 17, 2014, when Stacy was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in her rectum, liver, lungs and lymph nodes. As a healthy woman who had zero risk factors for colon cancer, Stacy was beyond stunned, as one can imagine, and given only a 10 percent chance of surviving for five years. As the news of her diagnosis sunk in, Stacy kept asking herself, why me? What did I do wrong? The doctors could not find a specific reason why she developed cancer, told her it was
just bad luck and that a lot of the success in her treatment would depend on her commitment to beating the odds. This was not the first time she had been told this. Stacy has two sons, Griffin and Emmett. Emmett has a chromosomal abnormality, one of three known cases in the world, which renders him unable to walk, talk or care for himself. There were no warning signs during her pregnancy that he would have a rare chromosomal abnormality, so it was another complete surprise to Stacy and her family when they received Emmett’s diagnosis. “People often ask me if I’m angry at God. I was never once angry with God. I feel honored by God that I was chosen to care for him,” Stacy said. “When Emmett was diagnosed, I hit rock bottom and experienced severe depression. I didn’t understand what I did in my life that my child had to suffer. I just said to my husband that we are going to do all we can do within our power to help our son,” she recounted. Stacy knew she had to fight hard to be there for those who need her the most. She teamed up with an oncologist and developed a treatment plan that included chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, exercise, a healthy diet and natural remedies.

She got her hands on every piece of information she could find about best health practices, foods known to help fight cancer and included yoga, massages, meditation, acupuncture and essential oils in her plan. She was in control and ready to shift into go mode — a skill she learned after Emmett’s diagnosis. “It was only when I received my bad news that I realized the whole situation with Emmett happened to me so that I would understand how to fight cancer. There’s no way I would have gone into a battle with stage four cancer with that same vigor and graciousness if I had not been granted the mission to care for Emmett. Every day I look at Emmett, I see his courage. He is the original warrior. I draw from his strength to face my own circumstances,” Stacy said. So she set out with her trust in God, her treatment plan and her determination to beat cancer. With any situation Stacy faces, she breaks it down into the smallest tasks she can to tackle the big picture one step at a time and reminds herself that she is doing everything she can do for that situation. “Beyond the things you can control, you really have to trust in God, yourself and the universe. That’s where peace comes in because you know you are fully engaged in your actions,” Stacy said. Texts, cards, gifts and visits poured in from family, friends and her Alpha Xi Delta Sisters throughout Stacy’s treatment. Among the first people to her side after her diagnosis were her Sisters from Penn State.

“We’ve been with each other through everything. That’s the comfort that comes only from Sisterhood. When you go through pledging, go through life’s ups and downs; that doesn’t fade away. That carries with you no matter what you face. Those bonds never break,” Stacy said. After enduring two back-to-back surgeries, radiation and more than 30 chemotherapy treatments, Stacy was told on March 1, 2016, that there was no evidence of disease in her body, news that stunned her doctors and was called a miracle. As she continues on her journey as a cancer survivor, she is working with local cancer centers and support organizations as a patient advocate and public speaker. Oftentimes people do not know what to say or do when someone they are close with is diagnosed with cancer, so Stacy is helping to break down that wall. One of her most recent projects is compiling a registry where a newly diagnosed patient can choose items such as gloves, socks, over-the-counter medications and more that will help ease the devastating shock of the situation and help both patients and caregivers cope with the side effects of treatments. Stacy will continue chemotherapy treatments indefinitely, but is defying the odds with a renewed positive outlook on life. “When you lie down at night and know you made the most of every day, that gives you peace,” Stacy said. “You can’t let your circumstance control you. “I believe one of the easiest things a Sister, chapter or alumnae association can do is promote the understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorders. From wearing a puzzle piece pin to tabling to Lighting It Up Blue on April 2, there are many ways we can create a greater awareness and a better understanding of those who are on the autism spectrum, the work of Autism Speaks and our partnership. The Minneapolis/St. Paul Alumnae Association has marked World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and Autism Awareness Month in a variety of ways over the past 8 years. Some of our events include meeting for lunch downtown while wearing blue, having Sisters sell baked goods and wristbands that have facts about autism attached to them, having a blue jeans day at work where 34 the

employees pay money to wear blue and having a guest speaker from Autism Speaks at a brunch where we sold blue light bulbs and had other Autism Speaks related door prizes. Week #2: Family Services - April 9-15
“Last year the Family Services week challenge was to do outreach with first responders for autism training. My chapter reached out to some of the local police officers during the month of April. We gave them pamphlets about responding to an emergency situation in which a person on the spectrum was involved and brought them some donuts. The officers loved it! The Chief of Police thanked us numerous times for helping to educate his team on what he and his force considered a very important matter. We were asked that day to return the next year with extra information and were given the numbers of other local first responders to spread the word. It only took one phone call and half an hour of our day, but truly affected the mission of Autism Speaks. My chapter members and I all loved the experience.” - Lauren Bakos, West Virginia ’15

“When I joined Alpha Xi Delta and was introduced to Autism Speaks, I quickly started to see the challenges associated with autism spectrum disorders. Autism Speaks and Alpha Xi Delta do a great job of showing people, like me, why understanding autism matters and how simple it is to help! Now, two years later, I am so proud that I can help do my part and advocate on behalf of those affected by autism. It is so easy but makes a lasting impact. I personally am involved in advocacy work by following Autism Votes, which shares updates on laws and policies that can positively affect those with autism and their families. I call my local representatives and voice my support on all bills and issues regarding autism. Lastly, when it comes to fundraising for AmaXIng Challenges and the Autism Speaks Walk events, I talk to people in my community about all the great resources Autism Speaks provides for families and educate them on exactly where their donation is going and why it matters!” - Maria Martinez, Kansas State ’15

“Autism Speaks research is so important because there are a vast amount of new developments in the field of autism. New research can help our community become aware and help families and individuals who are affected by autism. As a Summer Immersion 2014 participant, I visited Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and saw some of the researchers who are working to understand autism as it continues to affect 1 in 68 children. I felt excited to be standing in the labs and listening to the scientists. My excitement motivates me to continue to assist in raising not only money, but also awareness for autism and how we can better understand the science behind the disorder. Research is an integral part of the four pillars of Autism Speaks’ mission, and the research is the foundation of the organization. Autism Speaks Mission: Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. Please tell us about Autism Speaks’ new mission statement. Put simply, Autism Speaks enhances lives today and accelerates a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow. Our mission focuses on personalized solutions for people with autism wherever they fall on the spectrum and throughout their lives. For example, we now know that there is not one autism, but many subtypes, and each person can have unique strengths and challenges. We know most are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. And many people with autism also have other medical issues, such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures and sleep disturbances. Those findings, which Autism Speaks funded, inform our work and show us where to invest so we can make the biggest impact on the autism community. What was the motivation behind creating the new mission statement? In working on our vision for the Next 10 years and the strategic plan, it became obvious that because of amazing progress and learnings in the last decade, the mission needed to evolve as the field had evolved. It’s important to note that none of this progress in awareness, advocacy, or research would be possible without support from partners like Alpha Xi Delta. Now, we want to work toward even greater progress in the next 10 years, and we are so grateful Alpha Xi Delta is on this journey with us. How will the new mission objectives affect the work of Autism Speaks? We need to adapt our programs and services to meet people wherever they are on the spectrum through every stage of life. That means we will continue to raise funds for research that focuses on developing personalized treatments and improving our understanding of autism. We will work

with health care providers, educators and families to increase timely screenings and to decrease the time from age of diagnosis to intervention. We also plan to focus heavily on transition planning for those moving from school-based services into adulthood. Key in all of these objectives is making sure people with autism and their families have access to reliable information and community services throughout their lifetime. Why is Alpha Xi Delta important to the mission of Autism Speaks? Collaboration is key to our success, and Alpha Xi Delta has set the standard in terms of partnerships. Your members have raised nearly $6 million over the course of our sevenyear partnership. Autism Speaks has relied on you to be ambassadors for us in just about every major campaign. We see you on the “Today” show helping to promote World Autism Awareness Day each year. We see you at Autism Speaks Walks pitching in wherever help is needed. Your dedication has been crucial in achieving progress over the past 10 years, and you are vital to accomplishing our mission in the next 10. What are you most excited for in Autism Speaks’ future? Honestly, there are so many things I could list. I am excited about working with our supporters and partners to develop substantial solutions throughout a person’s lifetime, and a key piece of this is the transition into adulthood. That means making sure that once children with autism grow up, as they become teenagers and when they age out of school-based services, there are plenty of supports available that match their strengths and challenges. I also think we are on the path to breakthroughs in personalized medicine. Many people with autism have unique cases and really need a tailored approach to treatment. New research is key, and I am very excited about the potential impact from our scientific community in the near future.

Why I Give How has Alpha Xi Delta inspired you to realize your potential? I believe Alpha Xi Delta has and continues to inspire me to realize my potential due to the life-long friendships I made while attending Michigan State University (MSU). My Beta Theta Sisters were, and still are, some of the most supportive, encouraging and motivating friends I have had in my life. They are my extended family. Through Alpha Xi Delta, I learned leadership skills that helped me transition into the real world and my career. She instilled in me compassion and love, which I use on a daily basis to be a better wife and mother. Alpha Xi Delta sparked an interest in me to become more involved in my community and give back. I was shy, and the Sisterhood helped me step out of my comfort zone and reach out to the community. As an adult, I’ve volunteered at our local animal shelter, my children’s schools, the Red Cross, Salty Paws (a local animal assistance group that aids in hurricane situations), Stop Hunger Now and the Sea Turtle Project.

How does it feel to establish the Christine May Hutchinson Class of ’91 Scholarship and support the higher education of future generations of Beta Theta Sisters? I feel lucky and fortunate that I have been blessed with the ability to endow a scholarship and support the higher education of future generations of Sisters. I cannot take credit for the financial ability to have been able to gift the sorority with the funds. The credit goes to my family who created a fund that has the ability to donate funds to various causes we see fit. I suppose the credit I get is that I felt my heart strings being pulled towards the sorority I became a part of at MSU, Alpha Xi Delta! I’m very happy that I get to be a part of assisting a fellow Sister to further her education in order to go out into the world and do something worthwhile to benefit others. It is a pay it forward moment that is exciting to be a part of. What is your favorite phrase from our Symphony and why? I would have to say my favorite phrase today is “these things, O Lord, help us to instill within our hearts that we may grow in courage and graciousness and peace.” This one last line sums up everything from the whole Symphony and includes our Lord. I find including our Lord in any part of my life has instilled within my heart the ability to grow in courage, graciousness and peace. How has Alpha Xi Delta inspired you to realize your potential? Alpha Xi Delta has inspired me in many ways. Being in the college chapter and serving in various offices helped me learn team-work and how to handle responsibility. As a member of an alumnae association, I learned how women of different ages, at different stages of life, could be friends and Sisters. I think my greatest inspiration has come when attending National Conventions, where difficult issues affecting our Fraternity are debated and voted on. Our Sisters may hold vastly different ideas about an issue and may passionately argue on one side or the other, but when the vote is over, we remain united, realizing that all of us only want what we think is best for Alpha Xi Delta and her members.

What is your favorite phrase from our Symphony and why? I think my favorite part might be these words: “that without bitterness or defeat we may encounter misfortune and with humility meet success.” I think that both of these goals are very difficult to attain, but I find the latter is harder for me than the former. Every time I hear these words, it is a reminder to me that I have achieved nothing in life on my own. I have always had the help and support of others, every step of the way, and they deserve much more of the credit than I do. You have joined our Society of 1893. Why did you choose to make a planned gift to the Foundation and what option did you choose? My husband and I do not have children, so I want to leave any funds remaining at the time of my death to causes that are dear to my heart, and the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation is one of those. My husband and I have arranged for that via bequests in our wills.

Meet a Scholarship Recipient Olivia Ulrich, Georgia Tech ’15 2017 Gamma Eta Scholarship Recipient “I want to express my gratitude to the Sisters who have donated and made the Gamma Eta Scholarship possible. Your generosity allows students like me to pursue their educational goals and future careers. I will be a second-year student at the Georgia Institute of Technology this upcoming year, majoring in industrial engineering with a minor in Spanish. My goal is to apply this combination of coursework to a career in humanitarian logistics and supply chain, where I can work with the operations, logistics and problem-solving behind large nonprofits or global relief organizations. As a goal-oriented student, the Gamma Eta Scholarship is especially motivating because I can already begin to see the effects of my hard work during my first year at Georgia Tech. It is incredible to see discipline in academics and extracurricular activities pay off. It was a challenging year, but my Alpha Xi Delta Sisters have been here to support me every step of the way. CORA’S CHALLENGE RECAP September 14, 2016 marked a historic day for Alpha Xi Deltas nationwide as we celebrated Cora Bollinger Block’s 148th birthday and raised more than $24,000 for the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation! < Cora’s high school graduation photo taken on July 7, 1887.
Cora’s story started on September 14, 1868. Not only was she instrumental in beginning the story of Alpha Xi Delta, she was the bold and talented leader who led the charge for many of Alpha Xi Delta’s firsts. • Cora’s apartment, with Bertha Cook, was the first meeting place of Alpha Xi Delta. • Cora was the chair of the committee that presented the plans for the formation of Alpha Xi Delta to school officials. It was her clear thinking and vision that led the presentation to meet with faculty approval. • Cora was elected the first Chapter President of Alpha Chapter and went on to be our first National President. • Cora installed the Beta Chapter at Iowa Wesleyan College on June 9, 1902, the first chapter to be installed after Alpha Xi Delta became a National Fraternity. She also installed Alpha Xi Delta’s first chapter in Ohio, Gamma Chapter at the University of Mount Union, on August 20, 1902. • Cora presided over the first National Convention in 1903. After serving as the first Chapter President, then the first National President, Cora retired from active service with Alpha Xi Delta, feeling it was “well launched upon successful growth.” From making gifts to creating buzz on social media, more than 530 donors contributed to the Foundation’s success. Sisters, family and friends gave $24,018, making this the Foundation’s most successful single day of giving to date. Thank you to all who made Cora’s birthday a HUGE success! Your gift was so much more than a birthday celebration for Cora. It reflects the strength you bring to Alpha Xi Delta. Cora’s Challenge gifts are helping to make programs like The Founders’ Academy, the Leadership Coach Program and Courageous Conversations continue to happen.

By Michelle Davis, Cal State San Marcos ’12 I’m from a small city in Southern California and attended school just 30 minutes south of where I grew up. My home, school and the people closest to me have always been at a reasonable distance. Once I applied to become an Educational Leadership Consultant, I knew this position would open the door to new adventures and allow me to use my Alpha Xi Delta experience to inspire other Sisters to realize their potential, but I’ll be honest in sharing that I wasn’t sure what to expect. The idea of being away from home for months at a time was a scary and uncomfortable thought at first. But, I remembered a saying my Big Sister would tell me, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” And so, life began! Throughout my 18 chapter visits, I have experienced living in states where snow days, hurricanes and tornados were normal ways of life. I’ve flown in little propeller planes and found my way through large and confusing airport terminals. I’ve tried the best local food spots, from macaroni and cheese pizza at Ian’s Pizza in Wisconsin, chicken subs at Publix in Florida and green chile in New Mexico. When I’m in a new state or city, there is no guarantee I will visit there again so I make sure to take advantage of my visit! As Educational Leadership Consultants, we participate in the StrengthsQuest assessment to learn more about our top five strengths and how we can utilize those strengths in our jobs. My top five strengths are adaptability, relator, woo, developer and empathy, which puts me in the relationship building domain. Developer, in particular, has been the
strength I love to utilize on my visits. The developer is especially inclined to “recognize and cultivate the potential in others.” My overall goal during a visit is to make sure our Sisters feel empowered by the work they are doing, big or small. This has happened through individual consultations, AmaXIng Challenges and recruitment events! I also try to create relationships by recognizing and praising the hard work the women at these college chapters do to share Alpha Xi Delta with the campus and local communities. The passion I have seen from collegiate women makes this job very enjoyable. One of the most rewarding experiences thus far has been beginning a new chapter at Cal Poly Pomona. When I found out I would be working with this new establishment at the end of July I was elated! Not only was I excited to be back on the West Coast, but also to be a part of history. Alpha Xi Delta continues to grow in California, and I felt proud knowing I would be a part of this project. Natalie Leighton, a fellow ELC, and I were able to work together in our home state to interact with the Pomona community and meet the women going through recruitment. There were long days of tabling in the 100-degree weather and late night crafting for recruitment events. It was our job to create a clear vision for the potential new members, to show them what it would be like to be a founding Sister of a new chapter. The women who founded the chapter at Pomona share the same vision and goal of maintaining genuine, loyal friendships and building a strong chapter on their campus. They are eager to find more women at Pomona who share their vision to create a strong Sisterhood, and I am excited to see the legacy they will create.
