National President’s Letter

What does the

Future hold?

Dear Sisters,

“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” - John A. Shedd This quote can resonate with our Sisters on many levels. Leaving our comfort zones to attend a school far from home – will I meet new friends? How will I find my niche? Leaving long-lasting careers to start out on a new adventure – will it be a success? What does the future hold? Taking a leap of faith in any aspect of our lives – what if it doesn’t work out? Embarking on a new journey in life can be scary, but also incredibly exciting. Of course it’s easy to stick to your normal routine – to not go on that first date, to not take a hobby you love and turn it into a business, to not volunteer – because you’re nervous about failing. But, saying yes to new chances gives you the opportunity to surprise yourself and to find out what you’re made of. When fear of the unknown strikes, ask yourself, “What’s the worst that can happen?” You get rejected? Someone doesn’t like your idea? Ok, fine, but at least you know that you didn’t let fear get the best of you. Think of your bid day. Do you remember how excited you were? Weren’t you the tiniest bit scared? You were about to embark on a new journey with complete strangers that were now your Sisters! What you didn’t know on that fateful day was that Alpha Xi Delta would open so many opportunities for you - networking, leadership and long-lasting friendships – and would be a place you will forever call home. This fall, we welcomed thousands of young women across the country into our Sisterhood after a very successful recruitment. I’m looking forward to watching these young women continue to push their comfort zone limits and develop into bold, talented leaders on their campuses and communities.

In this issue, we’ll meet Sisters and friends of Alpha Xi Delta who left comfort behind and ventured out on bold adventures to realize their potential. You’ll be introduced to a chef who is preparing food for our members in a conscious way, Sisters who have blazed their own trails by starting their own businesses and you’ll learn from an Educational Leadership Consultant and Leadership Coach what it’s like to leave the comforts of home and travel across the country to inspire countless undergraduate women. On pages 33-37, learn more about the upcoming elections within our organization. We need Sisters who are ready to step outside their comfort zone to help us advance our dear Fraternity. Are you ready to start the next chapter in your life? The next time you’re considering making a leap and putting yourself out there, I hope you will ask yourself, what’s the worst that can happen?

Loyally,

Sandi Edwards National President

Letters to the Editor I was so pleased to read the Sister to Sister article in the summer issue of The Quill. Elizabeth Griffin’s story about her daughter’s Type 1 diabetes and her support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) hit very close to home. My son is also a Type 1 diabetic and each year we support JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes through our walk team, Hayden’s Heroes. I understand how important it is to promote Alpha Xi Delta’s philanthropic partner, Autism Speaks, so I was very grateful that the Fraternity not only gave JDRF a “plug” but also included details about how people could donate to JDRF. Additionally, you provided important information about the two types of diabetes and the warning signs of Type 1 diabetes. I believe Autism Speaks does great work, but giving column space to another great organization fighting to improve the lives of children shows that Alpha Xi Delta understands there are many issues impacting our Sisters worthy of our attention.

ELCs and LCs are recent college graduates who visit Alpha Xi Delta chapters throughout the United States. Assignments can vary depending upon the current needs of our chapters, and they may assist with chapter development, officer transition, recruitment assistance or recruitment planning. They may also help the Fraternity with extension presentations, colonizations and installations of new chapters. Former Alpha Xi Delta ELCs and LCs have commented, after their year of travel, that their time on the road was the best learning experience of their lives. Good things come to those who wait, right? That may not be the case for everything in life, but we certainly think it holds true to Alpha Xi Delta and our website makeover. We began our journey toward a redesigned website nearly a year ago. After several months of planning, research and surveying, we finally began putting together the site, writing the new content and choosing photos in the summer of 2012. “It is our hope that our newly redesigned site will be not only attractive, but will tell the story of Alpha Xi Delta, allow us to share our strong Sisterhood with our friends and families and showcase how our members continue to realize their potential,” said Elysia Gallivan, National Executive Director.

MIXING it Up in the Kitchen Jackie Howard worked for six years in a co-op grocery, has been a pastry apprentice and worked as a pastry chef. But, for the past two years, the women of the Beta Pi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta at Indiana University have been enjoying the fruits of her labor. Jackie is the head chef of Beta Pi Chapter’s kitchen, and she’s mixing it up in a healthy way by making an effort to cook and bake with all local, organic produce and meat. “The women pay for meals, and it should be healthy, nutritious and homemade,” Jackie says. “I believe food is energy. Not in terms of fuel, but in terms of a positive life.” In fact, it was cheddar and veggie eggs, bacon, pineapple and brown sugar oatmeal, cinnamon raisin scones, blueberry yogurt with granola and fresh fruit for Saturday brunch the day I stopped by to chat with Jackie and learn more about her approach in the kitchen. “It’s so great to see the women in the chapter progress and keep asking for healthier options,” says Jackie. “I’m so grateful for a job that allows me to have variety of tasks each day and allows me to interact with the women of the chapter to create such a positive change,” she added. Of course, preparing meals for 120 women opens the floodgates to different tastes, preferences and dislikes. “Yes, it is difficult to make everyone happy on a daily basis, but we will make pasta to order or provide an alternative if someone is not happy,” says Jackie. She’s even tapped into social media to make sure she is connecting with the chapter throughout the meal planning process. Xi Bistro, a Facebook group, Jackie Howard, head chef of Beta Pi Chapter’s kitchen, has been serving up dishes such as creamy pesto chicken, quinoa-feta salad and local roasted squash since she took over the kitchen last year.

was started for chapter members to request certain foods. Today, it has evolved into an online daily menu, a forum for feedback on meals and a way to educate the chapter on the foods they eat. They’ve even expanded their social media reach and recently launched @XiBistro on Twitter. “We’ll take a picture of the farmer that brings us our vegetables, or we’ll post a photo of the farm where our meat comes from,” Jackie shares. “It’s important for the women to know where their food comes from and how we support our local community.” Educating the chapter about local resources, hosting monthly family style formal dinners and inviting the women to give their feedback have led to a strong partnership between the chapter women and the kitchen staff. “The women in the chapter tell their friends about the food, and their friends come here [to eat] and they want their chapter houses to be more like ours in terms of menu options,” Jackie says. The chapter women are appreciative and thankful, notes Jackie. “They know it’s different, and they appreciate it.” “Because of what we do in the kitchen and how we focus on the food, I feel our events stand out from the other chapters on campus because it shows our effort and how much we care,” Jackie noted. Jackie does offer up one piece of advice for creating a change in the kitchen: “Listen to the women and what they’re asking for. Be open to changing yourself. You have to want to create good food because they want to eat it. If you open yourself up to that, it all falls into place.” The National Housing Corporation works with vendors who provide kitchen staffing and culinary solutions, and these resources are available to all Alpha Xi Delta corporation boards. Contact Jennifer Foster, Director of Housing, at jfoster@alphaxidelta.org or 317.872.3500 to learn how the NHC can be a partner for your corporation board’s next project.

CHANGING THE CONVERSATION Condoleezza Rice, a Panhellenic sister and member of Alpha Chi Omega, was featured throughout the film as she discussed the representation of female political leaders in the media. Photo credit: Alan Petersime

The United States ranks 90th in the world in terms of representation of women in government. Iraq, Cuba, Afghanistan and China have more women in government than the U.S. Only 34 women have ever served as governors compared to 2,319 men.

53% of 13 year old girls are unhappy with their bodies. That number increases to 78% by age 17. These facts are among many of the shocking statistics shared in Miss Representation, an award-winning documentary that explores how mainstream media is the source of underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America. Throughout its 90 minutes, the film touches upon girls’ body image, self-confidence and leadership aspirations and how they are connected with the way women are portrayed on television and in the media. In August, I attended a screening of Miss Representation that was hosted by the National Panhellenic Conference. The film, created by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, first premiered in the documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival in the fall of 2011. Most of us have already heard statistics and information that concerns the media’s involvement with the depiction of women. This isn’t new news to us, but it is very real and extremely concerning considering how prevalent the media has become in our daily lives. According to the film, teens today spend an average of 10 hours per day using media, with girls ages 11 to 14 being blasted by some 500 advertisements a day. The film shares stories from teenage girls about how they feel in regards to the media’s messaging. “I remember in fifth grade, I was worried about my weight,” says Urenna, a California public school student featured in the film. Another young woman’s eyes fill with tears as she admits to being teased because her peers

thought she was anorexic. One by one, each young woman shares a heartbreaking story. Mixed with these stories are powerful interviews with Katie Couric, Condoleezza Rice, Rachel Maddow, Geena Davis, Nancy Pelosi, Margaret Cho and Gloria Steinem. As a viewer, I thought the most interesting segments were listening to the women who work in the entertainment industry and hearing how they describe their own struggles with the ways in which the media has portrayed them. Katie Couric says she saw her role as the first solo female anchor of a network TV evening news program as an opportunity to send the “message that a woman could be as confident as a man in an important, powerful role.” However, we see in the film the media coverage about Couric was focused on what she was wearing or pitting her against Diane Sawyer, another successful female evening news anchor. “Whenever there are two women who are working in similar professions, it’s automatically positioned as a catfight,” Couric said. Another important message throughout the film focuses on the need for women to support, encourage and mentor each other in an effort to work against a new norm that would have them do otherwise. As sorority women, we know the stereotypes we are portrayed as in the media. The truth is, our organizations launch leaders, provide a network of women to connect with and give us opportunities to lead on our campuses and in our communities. I encourage you to think about these stereotypes the next time you have a somewhat suggestive t-shirt design or decide to post a photo from last night’s party on social media. Are you doing your part to change the conversation of our Greek-lettered organizations, or are you adding fuel to the fire? This is truly an insightful film that packs a powerful punch. Screenings are being hosted throughout the country to spread the message, and I encourage you to attend one if it’s in your area. If you are a student or school administrator wanting to screen Miss Representation at your school, there is education curriculum available. Visit www.missrepresentation.org to learn more about screening opportunities. www.alphaxidelta.org

ultiple times we have been asked to think about the Sister we most admire - the one who has helped us realize our potential and changed our lives forever. For Brittany Palumbo, West Virginia ’06, that moment came during a New York City buying trip with friend and business partner, Shannon Coombs. Right there, at the age of 24, in the middle of Betsey Johnson’s showroom, Brittany and her business partner, Shannon, decided to make their dreams become a reality and open their own boutique, Park & Madison. They had talked about opening a store together for nearly a year, but this buying trip gave them that little extra spark to

g

A short two months later, Park & Madison opened its doors to the public on Black Friday, November 25, 2011. “Our biggest challenge so far was actually getting the store launched. We designed the entire store from the ground up within a short two months,” Brittany said. “We designed everything from the layout, paint colors, interior design, concrete color, clothing fixtures and displays. We also had to place all immediate merchandise orders and make sure that they arrived in time to get the store up and launched. We actually ended up opening two weeks later than expected due to construction delays, which is how we ended up opening on Black Friday. We

make Park & Madison come to life. “Meeting my Alpha Xi Delta Sister, Betsey Johnson, Syracuse ’62, on this trip was an incredible inspiration and life changing moment for me,” Brittany said. “We were in the middle of our appointment in her showroom when my partner and I looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s go for it. Let’s open our store we have always dreamed of having’.” Brittany graduated from West Virginia University in May of 2009 with a bachelor of science in business marketing. Always having a love for fashion and hoping to one day become a buyer for Nordstrom, she soon took a job as manager and assistant buyer at a local boutique, Vance’s Blues, in Morgantown, West Virginia. It was in this role that she met Shannon, owner of Vance’s Blues. Brittany fell in love with the boutique life and never looked back. Being a big dreamer, Brittany decided to set her sights on owning her own boutique someday and worked very hard to turn her dream into a reality. Brittany and Shannon worked closely together for two years before deciding to become partners and open a boutique in September 2011. “We wanted a boutique that hadn’t been done before…something completely different than people are used to seeing,” Brittany explained. “We think of ourselves as a mini Nordstrom, with an Anthropologie atmosphere—but still having the incredible one-on-one shopping experience of a boutique!” The inspiration for the name of the store came from Shannon having grown up on Park Avenue and Brittany having purchased her first house on Madison Avenue. It just so happens that both are main streets in New York City, too.

worked all through the night on Thanksgiving so we could open our doors on Friday morning. Fortunately, it has been smooth sailing since then!” Little did they know the great successes they would have within the first year of business. Park & Madison was featured as one of the Top 50 Boutique’s in America to shop in by ELLE Magazine in June 2012. “It was such an honor to be featured as a top boutique by the number one fashion magazine in the world,” Brittany said. “It is such an incredible feeling to know that our hard work and vision is paying off. I would have to say that this by far has been the greatest success and most proud moment for me so far.” Brittany has also been able to meet a few celebrities outside of the fashion world. Emily Maynard, from ABC’s hit reality show The Bachelorette, was on the cover of Us Weekly magazine wearing Park & Madison merchandise. Having grown up in West Virginia, Emily visited Park & Madison to do some hometown shopping while visiting over the Fourth of July. She was seen wearing the Gili Top by Gypsy 05, and she has been spotted in magazines numerous times in Park & Madison’s apparel as well as wearing an ensemble from Park & Madison Boutique on the season finale of her show. Now that their first boutique is established and successful, Brittany and Shannon are working on plans to expand their business. “We hope to one day launch the Park & Madison Clothing Line,” Brittany explained. “Currently, we are in the planning stages to open three more stores in other cities and states by August 2013, for a total of four stores. We hope to expand even more in the spring 2014. Our online shopping site will be up and running in the near future for our out of state customers to shop on.”

In addition, Brittany has found time to start giving back to Alpha Xi Delta and the West Virginia University Greek community as an alumna. She most recently hosted a recruitment fashion show during fall 2012 formal recruitment orientation so potential new members could better understand what to wear to each party. This way they could focus more on the connections they were making and finding their place in the Greek community. She has graciously made merchandise donations toward the Iota Chapter’s Homecoming week silent auction basket as well as volunteered her time to serve as part of the advisory board on the public relations committee. Plans are already underway to hold a community-wide fashion show and silent auction to raise awareness for Autism Speaks in the month of April. “There are so many important things I have learned over the past year, but I would have to say the number one thing is that if you believe in something and you put your heart and soul into it, then it can happen. A year and a half ago I never would have imagined this would be my life now, but I believed in what I wanted and went after it. The sky is the limit when you are driven.” Brittany admits that finding a balance between the workload of owning her own business and her everyday 11 The Quill of Alpha Xi Delta

life has been the most difficult part of owning her own boutique. “You have to put hours into it that you wouldn’t normally working for some else. Thankfully, my family and friends have given me huge support which has made it easier.” Not only have Brittany’s family and friends congratulated and encouraged her along the way, so have her Alpha Xi Delta Sisters. Having one of the top boutiques in America right in Morgantown, local Alpha Xi Delta Sisters are often found shopping the designer racks of Park & Madison and seeking fashion advice from their Sister. Brittany greatly appreciates all of the support from her Alpha Xi Delta Sisters, and not only from those who are local. “It was such a great feeling to work directly with Betsey Johnson when we did our initial order with her.” In offering advice to any Sisters out there that are thinking of becoming entrepreneurs, Brittany states, “Follow your dreams and don’t lose focus. People close to me told me not to do it, but I followed my heart and have worked very hard and it has paid off. Once you’ve done your research and decide to start your own business, put blinders on and go at it with everything you’ve got!” Learn more at www.shopparkandmadison.com

Left: Amy with her husband, Alan, and daughters Ansley, age 8, and Adaline, age 5. Right: Amy Smith specializes in photographing newborns, children and families.

PURSUING A PASSION A few years after working full-time, Amy Smith, Central Florida ’96, learned that sitting behind a desk and living forty hours a week in an office wasn’t the way she wanted to spend her life. That is why nine years ago, she decided to ditch her day job and pursue her passion of running the show behind the lens of her own newborn, child and family focused photography business. “It was very scary, but my thought has always been, ‘what would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?’ I dove head first and never looked back, and I’m so glad I did,” Amy says. At the time, Amy was settling into married life and the idea of starting a family with her husband was starting to turn into a reality. Being a stay-at-home mom wasn’t an option for Amy due to her husband’s career as a police officer. “I’d always dabbled in photography and had a passion for it, so I started taking night classes and slowly started to find my way with portrait work. I started my business while still working full-time to make sure I could really do it. By the time we were ready to have our first daughter, I was finally able to quit and go full-time with my photography business,” says Amy. “I’m so glad I did.” In the beginning, Amy read nearly everything she could get her hands on and practiced taking photos with whoever would let her. Facebook, Twitter and all other social media vehicles were just starting to pop up when Amy was starting her business, so word of mouth was crucial for her to get her name out in the community. “I had a few key clients in the beginning who were kind enough to spread my name and from there it started to snowball. I was lucky back then that so many wonderful clients were excited to tell their friends about me,” Amy says. What’s the best thing about owning your own business? Hands down, she says, it’s making your own schedule. “My family and I

travel quite a bit, including a month-long RV trip every summer. Because I work for myself, I can make that happen,” says Amy. Watching children grow, seeing teeth fall out for the first time, watching families grow and seeing her photographs on interstate billboards are all high points Amy expressed when asked about her favorite part of running her own business. In addition to family photography, Amy does commercial jobs that use her photography for billboards and mailers that are included in nationally printed magazines. Her work was even featured Walt Disney’s 2011 ad campaign! “Even though I can make my own schedule, I still work more than I should sometimes,” says Amy. During the busy times of the year, Amy’s schedule can get hectic. She encourages everyone to keep a calendar and block dates off in advance so that family time can have its place. “I spend as much time as I can with my girls. They’ll only be little once. Work can wait, even when we think it can’t,” Amy says. If you’re thinking of starting your own business or changing career paths, Amy offers up this advice: “Know that it won’t be easy. It’s a lot of work, but working for yourself makes it worth it. There will be some hard learned lessons along the way and many stressful times, but what would you attempt if you knew you would not fail? I remind myself of that all the time.” Central Florida child photographer and baby photographer, Amy Smith, specializes in newborn, toddler and family photography and contemporary baby and child photography in Orlando, Florida. Tips to Start a Small Business By Lisa Faulkner-Dunne, Kentucky ’76

If you dream about owning a vintage clothing store or selling your fabulous cake pops, you’re not alone. Owning a business has long been the American dream! But, success requires more than a passion - your goal is to make money doing something you enjoy. Planning, research, flexibility and hard work are the keys to make that business profitable. I love the flexibility of running my own public relations business, and I love doing something different every day. For example, last week I placed a gardening expert from Southern Living on morning shows, then helped her deliver container gardens to Ronald McDonald House; sent out a team to sample coffee and donuts at a football game for Dunkin’ Donuts; and began planning a Santa Tour for Make- A- Wish. Running a business is hectic, but rewarding. If you have the desire and the discipline, it can work for you. Here are a few basic tips I’ve learned while running my agency for 20 years and consulting with many other retail businesses.

1 2

Getting started Create a business plan - It’s really common sense, laying out what you need, what it will cost and what it will take to make money. Determine your monthly expenses, and determine how much you need to sell or invoice, to make a profit. Are the numbers realistic? If you don’t know how to create a business plan, take a class at the community college to learn or hire an accountant to help you. Research your competitors - Can you do what they are doing either better, in a different geographic area or focus on a particular type of client? Do people choose the product or service you are planning to market by price, location or superior customer service? What will you offer to stand out from competitors?

3 4 5

Keep your day job, while testing the market - Many small businesses are not profitable the first year. Whatever your skill or product is, test the water first. Bake wedding cakes for friends on weekends, design websites after hours, write articles for the local newspaper, to see how much time a project requires and slowly build your client base. Work out of your home until you are making enough money to rent or purchase an office. Of course, if it’s a retail venture, that doesn’t work since you can’t open a pet store or coffee café out of your extra bedroom. Ask for advice from everyone about locations, traffic patterns, what other businesses have learned. Current entrepreneurs and future customers offer a wealth of knowledge! Use their advice to fine-tune plans or change direction if necessary.

6 7

Aim for Success Determine your target market – A speech writer will have a different niche target than a recycled sporting goods store. Research what they do, where they go and where they shop or obtain your product. Develop a marketing plan, or hire a Marketing/ PR professional to develop a plan, to reach your future customers. You can use advertising, marketing and public relations to let future customers know about you. • Advertising: print, broadcast or online. You create it and pay for it. Example: Now OPEN -- Stephanie’s Organic Pet Food Shop • Marketing Promotions: reaches people in a smaller geographic area and usually offers a deal -- perhaps a door hanger or windshield flyer at the dog show. Example: Buy one Organic Dog Bone and get one free -- at Stephanie’s Organic Dog Food Shop -- Now open on Main Street. • Public Relations: encourages someone else to talk about you. Example: Invite a reporter from the local newspaper to visit the store with her dog, and ask her to write about her experience. Deliver a basket of your dog bones to radio station DJs who talk about their dogs. • Community Relations and Cause–related Marketing: being a good neighbor and giving back to your community, while letting your customers know about it. Put a sign by the cash register. Example: Stephanie’s Organic Pet Food Shop donates $1 for every bone sold to the Richardson Humane Society. • Events: Stephanie’s Organic Dog Food Shop could hold a Yappy Hour the 4th Friday of every month, and invite dog owners and their dogs to enjoy games and 20% off all food.

10 11

Make sure people can find you. Do you have a phone number that can be found under directory assistance? Do you have a website? A Facebook page? A Facebook business page? A Twitter account? Are you Google-able? Does your name let people know what kind of business you are? Is your signage clear and readable?

Bonus Tip! Make the business and your customers your priority. Asking other people to run it doesn’t work well in the beginning -- they don’t have the passion. There usually isn’t enough cash flow to justify hiring a manager. Make exemplary customer service your number one goal. Whether you are running a retail business or providing a service to only a few vendors, you have to treat people with respect and meet your obligations. Nordstrom’s became a powerhouse retailer with customer service as their main differentiator -- everyone likes to be treated well!

Lisa Faulkner-Dunne has more than 25 years of experience in public relations, the past 20 heading her own firm. Her agency specializes in community relations and consumer products, and she is President of PRConsultantsGroup, a consortium of PR professionals representing each of the top 50 markets in the United States. She is one of three Alpha Xis in that group! She is a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Dallas

Tell everyone! After you determine your target, reach out to them, and tell everyone you meet about your new business -- even if you think they are not the target market. Most people like to do business with someone they know and like to refer others.

Hold a pre-opening (called a soft opening) for friends if it is retail establishment with a physical location. This is the perfect time to use your community relations tie-in and involve a local non-profit organization, with a donation or canned food drive, etc. relating to your business. Send an announcement to everyone you know if it’s a business without a physical location and/or hold a kick-off reception.

Realize Your Potential

Journey of H By Noelle Corrado, Rochester Institute of Technology ’10

This past summer,

I had the opportunity to take part in a unique experience that allowed me to travel the country all while pursuing my passion as a sign language interpreter with the men of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Journey of Hope is one of three summer events hosted by Push America, an organization owned and operated by Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity to help raise funds and awareness for individuals with disabilities. It is a cross-country bicycle trek beginning in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle that ends together with all teams in Washington, D.C. The event raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Normally, these summer events are limited to brother-only participation, but I was lucky enough to participate in this year’s activities. In fact, this was also the first year that deaf brothers participated in the event.

15 The Quill of Alpha Xi Delta

Fall/Winter 2012

Rochester Institute of Technology has a large deaf population, and most of the Greek organizations on our campus have deaf brothers and sisters. When one of the Pi Kappa Phi brothers, who is deaf, decided he wanted to participate in the Journey of Hope and ride a bicycle across the United States, he knew he would need an interpreter to travel with him and donate their entire summer to Pi Kappa Phi’s philanthropy. I am an American Sign Language Interpreting student and decided, with the encouragement of my Sisters, to apply to be his interpreter. After four interviews, I got an email from this brother saying he would be honored if I would be willing to give my summer to help him travel the U.S. I immediately said yes, and at the time, I had no idea how big of an impact this trip would have my life. Each time we arrived in a new town, we would have events called friendship visits. Basically we would go to an organization and spend time with individuals with disabilities. These disabilities varied from

Hope

cerebral palsy, to autism, to other disabilities we didn’t even know about. We learned a lot about different disabilities, and this educational experience is what impacted my life the most. We traveled for 60 days, but my first friendship visit is the clearest memory I have of the trip. We met up with an organization called Ability First in Long Beach, California. There, the Journey of Hope team was in charge of running carnival games for children, however; the games weren’t as exciting to the kids as dancing. There was one little boy who was awesome at dancing, and we all were having a great time cheering him on. He ended up having me dance with him, and when the dancing died down, he still wanted me to play with him. He would run up to me, tag me and have me chase him around the “carnival.” The dancing and running probably continued for about two hours, and I was exhausted. But, he kept going, so I did too. When his mother came to pick him up, I learned that this little boy, who was non-stop moving for two hours, had just

recovered from heart surgery. He couldn’t have been older than 10 years old. This moment made me realize that my “problems” in life are really not that significant. This isn’t the only friendship visit that had an impact on my life. We got to go to a prom at Camp ASCCA (Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults); we were able to attend two different Miracle League baseball games, play wheel chair basketball and so much more. It was an honor to travel with the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi, and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to learn more about Push America and the Journey of Hope. Tales From the Road

Tales

FROM THE ROAD

MEGAN MACKIE, NORTH CAROLINA-WILMINGTON ’08 Teaching and learning are two subjects I’ve always had a passion for. When I first started traveling, I had no idea I would be doing just as much learning as I would be teaching. Traveling to chapters all over the country, you begin to learn how each chapter appears to be different, but at the end of the day, are really all the same. The most amazing thing to me, when I joined Alpha Xi Delta as an undergraduate, was joining a Sisterhood that was bigger than my chapter, my university and my state. Throughout my travels, it has become amazingly clear that no matter how far apart, we are all connected as Sisters in Alpha Xi Delta. Just like teaching, traveling as a Leadership Coach for Alpha Xi Delta involves constantly answering the same questions. Some of the most common questions include: Is this your real job? How old are you? Why are you here? But most importantly, it involves answering the more essential questions. How do I better my Sisterhood? How can we make our chapter stronger? How do I become a better leader? Being able to help our Sisters find an answer to these questions makes me not only proud, but excited for the future of our great Fraternity. Being a Leadership Coach allows me to focus on the aspects of Alpha Xi Delta that I find to be the most valuable and important. Working with individuals to educate them on leadership development, small groups on team work and chapters on Sisterhood are just a few of the topics I find myself most often thinking about. I am constantly reminded of the skills that our Sisters are developing through not only what they are doing, but how they go about doing it. Traveling for Alpha Xi Delta has been an incredibly rewarding experience so far. I have grown as a leader, an educator and as a Sister. I can only imagine what the rest of the year will bring!

Educational Leadership Consultants Brittany Hartory (left) and Kristi Ford (right) during a visit to the Rho Chapter for formal recruitment.

BRITTANY HARTORY, BOWLING GREEN ’08 The past few months of traveling as an Educational Leadership Consultant have impacted me in ways that I never have thought possible. The women I’ve met on the road are such assets to the Fraternity, and working with them has been a blessing. I began my travels knowing I would be helping with recruitment plans, officer training and our newly installed Iota Sigma Chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University. I’ve also had the opportunity to visit Gamma Delta Chapter at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Rho Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Kappa Chapter at the University of Illinois and Iota Alpha Chapter at George Mason University. I saw their stories and passion for Alpha Xi Delta, and realized although these chapters are located across the country from one another, the women have a common bond that truly ties them together. This bond is inherent; these women are truly a direct reflection of Alpha Xi Delta’s mission and values and have deeply inspired me. The rich history of Alpha Xi Delta has been phenomenal to see, from my visit to Rho, which is more than 100 years old, to Iota Sigma, which was founded just this year. I look forward to helping our Iota Sigma Chapter learn more about these values, develop a strong national bond and realize their potential.

Sigma’s CENTENNIAL Celebration

More than 150 Alpha Xi Deltas gathered in Iowa City, Iowa, to celebrate Sigma Chapter’s 100th birthday! Sigma Chapter was founded at the University of Iowa on June 12, 1912.

Sigma Chapter celebrated its Centennial October 12-14 in Iowa City, Iowa, and Sisters were honored to have National President Sandi Edwards as a special guest. The Territory of Iowa, also known as Iowa’s “Old Capitol,” was built in 1840 in Iowa City, Iowa. In 1857, the Iowa State Capitol moved to Des Moines and “Old Cap” became the official home of the University of Iowa. This history made “Old Cap” the perfect site for the opening reception of Sigma’s Centennial Celebration. There was good food – delicious hors d’oeurves and birthday cake. Two student a cappella groups serenaded everyone at the reception. More than 100 Sisters gathered, along with a few brave spouses who were awed by our Sisterhood. Our Centennial luncheon was held Saturday at noon. We heard from Sandi Edwards and Susan Winckler, Iowa ’88, an Alpha Xi Delta Woman of Distinction. Janice Baumback, Washington ’41, is a long-time supporter of Sigma Chapter, and she was honored at the event. Janice has been active in helping Sigma Chapter for decades, so in her honor, one picture from each of Sigma’s decades was printed, framed and hung in the chapter house. Also printed and framed were the five houses in Iowa City which have been home to Sigma Chapter. After our delicious lunch and program, all 166 Sisters gathered in a circle, held hands and sang “The Sisterhood of Women.” The spirit of Sisterhood swelled. The finale was a brunch at our beloved chapter house. Built in 1928, it was exciting to hear Sisters from as early as the 50s squeal with delight at the house, their bedrooms, the changes to

the space and to see the decades of photography now hanging in the house in honor of Janice! A four-level addition was added in the late 60s. Those who lived in the house prior to the addition were amazed at the additional room. The current chapter members gave superb house tours to the alumnae. Once again the food was delicious, topped by sugar cookies shaped in “100.” Some alumnae from the 70s and 80s gathered in the Gold Room and sang old songs. Everyone left with a tremendous sense of Sisterhood. All weekend there were many hugs, some tears, lots of promises to keep in touch or get together sooner and a renewed appreciation of the Sisterhood of Alpha Xi Delta!

What’s the time commitment for serving on National Council?

Foundation Trustees

• Three in-person meetings per year • One conference call per month • Council members may be asked to attend other meetings as appropriate and to visit college chapters and alumnae associations • Between meetings and conference calls, business is conducted by email and other electronic systems

The Foundation Nominating Committee asks for your recommendations for Trustees to serve for the 2013-17 term. The Foundation is looking for Sisters with these qualifications: • Experience in board service, community leadership, public relations, finance or fundraising. • The ability to open doors to and influence donors. • A commitment to Alpha Xi Delta’s vision and mission.

How do I make a recommendation? • Download or photocopy the Recommendation Form for the 2013-15 National Council, available on the Fraternity’s website. • Or, call and/or email Fraternity Headquarters to request a form. Return each completed form to Nominating Committee Chair Karin Hagen Riggs via email to Karin.riggs@yahoo.com. Questions can be answered by Karin at the email above or by leaving her a voicemail at 317.872.3500 ext. 250. Recommendations must be received by February 15, 2013.

What happens after recommendations are made? The Nominating Committee, made up of the chair, two collegians and two alumnae, reviews all recommendations received by February 15, 2013, and obtains resumes. The committee then prepares a slate of candidates who they believe are best qualified to fulfill the responsibilities and meet the challenges of the various offices. By late April, the slate and candidates’ resumes are sent to those eligible to vote at the 2013 National Convention.

Can nominations be made after the slate has been sent? A Sister who hasn’t been slated and wants to be considered for a National Council office can submit her name in writing, with a resume, to the Nominating Committee within 21 days of the mailing of the slate. The Nominating Committee will verify the eligibility of each nominee and distribute the resume(s) to those eligible to vote at Convention. There will be no nominations from the floor.

Additionally, they should have the following abilities: • Work well individually and in a group • Strong written and oral communication skills • A commitment to perpetuating the Fraternity • Experience/expertise in one of these areas: fundraising, accounting, finance, banking, real estate, law, strategic planning, property management, construction, interior design, engineering, recruitment, public relations or Greek/student housing operations • Current or former service on a local building corporation board, chapter advisory board or in another Alpha Xi Delta volunteer role

Proposed Amendments to Alpha Xi Delta’s Constitution The Alpha Xi Delta National Chapter may amend the National Constitution when deemed advisable. An amendment may be sponsored by any of the following: a college chapter, an alumnae association, the Constitution Committee, National Council, a member of National Council or a Past National President. The proposed amendment should state in which article and section it should be placed, and it should be stated in language appropriate to the Constitution. If the proposed amendment conflicts with an existing statement, the sponsor(s) is responsible for proposing additional amendments to resolve the conflict or the proposal will be void. In a nutshell…tell us about you. I am a Florida native and an initiate of the Theta Sigma Chapter at the University of Central Florida. I traveled last year for Alpha Xi Delta as an Educational Leadership Consultant, and I continue to volunteer as the C.A.R.E. Team Territory Director for the Southeast. I enjoy going to the movies, tailgating at the Central Florida Knights games and getting together with friends and family. Finish the sentence: “Looking at me, no one would guess…” That I am a first generation American. My parents emigrated from Cuba seeking refuge from the communist regime. This has helped shape who I am today and has taught me to appreciate the opportunities that are available just by virtue of living in the USA! Favorite ΑΞΔ memory: There are too many great memories from my collegiate years, but I have to say I am enjoying my alumnae experience just as much! I really loved Convention 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. Getting to meet Sisters from across the country and learning about their individual Alpha Xi Delta experience was so exciting. I also had the opportunity to make new lifelong friends and was fortunate to help behind the scenes at Convention, which was so much fun working with Fraternity staff and volunteers. What is one thing you learned from your year on the road as an Educational Leadership Consultant that you want to share with other Sisters? Traveling last year was a once-in-alifetime opportunity. I learned a range of new skills and can confidently say I

am an expert at packing a suitcase! But most importantly, I met some of the most amazing women last year, and I learned that membership in Alpha Xi Delta is truly a gift. As I traveled, every Sister I met welcomed me with open arms as if we had been friends for a lifetime. The feeling of being at home wherever I was made my job a true joy! Favorite thing about winter: The holidays! I love everything about the season – getting together with family and friends, decorating and shopping. Also, it is the one time of year I get to enjoy cooler weather since it is summer for most of the year in Florida. Why do you pay your alumnae dues? It is one way I can say thank you for all the wonderful opportunities Alpha Xi Delta has afforded me. I want to ensure that future members get the same experience I did as a collegian and as an alumna. As an organization we are doing amazing things for our members through programming and for the community with our local service and contributions to Autism Speaks. I want to make sure that Alpha Xi Delta can continue to do all these wonderful things, and I know every little bit helps. You can Be The Heart of Alpha Xi Delta. Pay your alumnae dues at www.alphaxidelta.org/betheheart.

Alumna Profile By Lauren Fisher, Indiana ’08, Communications Coordinator

Spreading Birthday Cheer Megan (Megs) Yunn, Marietta ’03, is the founder of Beverly’s Birthdays, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing birthday parties for homeless children in the Pittsburgh region. The idea for Beverly’s Birthdays first came to Megs one afternoon while she was volunteering at a local afterschool program. She met a young girl named Beverly and was helping her learn the meaning of the phrase “accustomed to.” As an example, Megs said, “Beverly, at birthday parties, people are accustomed to eating what?” Beverly responded, “Ms. Megs, I’ve never had a birthday party. I’ve never even had my own slice of birthday cake.” It was that moment that sparked the concept of Beverly’s Birthdays. In June 2011 Megs decided to enter the idea for Beverly’s Birthdays into Scholastic’s BE BIG in Your Community Contest, a nationwide contest designed to help people make the world a better place. Megs was selected as one of the top 10 first-place winners, and she received a start up grant of $2,500 to help make Beverly’s Birthdays a reality. Now, a year later, Beverly’s Birthdays is partnered with two shelters in the Pittsburgh area, Sojourner House MOMs and Auberle. Megs and her team of volunteers, also known as the cheer squad, travel to each of these shelters once a month to provide birthday celebrations for all of the children who have birthdays during that month. Each party is uniquely themed, and the team does something special to recognize the birthday recipients, such as giving them a special prop or accessory to wear for the day. So far this year, Beverly’s Birthdays provided a mad scientist party, a super hero party and a birthday beach bash, just to name a few. On each child’s actual birth date, they receive a birthday in a box, which includes fun toys and trinkets which were picked out just for them. Planning one of these birthday celebrations requires more work than just showing up with cake and singing happy birthday. The team plans activities for

the children to do at the birthday parties and buys the supplies for the various activities. They need to coordinate all of the details with the shelter and volunteers as well as figure out who is supplying the food and the treat bags. It’s a lot of work, but the end result really pays off. At Auberle’s first birthday celebration the team brought in a mobile video game truck for the seven teenage boys that were celebrating birthdays that month. “The boys were beyond excited about it,” Megs recalled. One of the older boys actually approached Megs and said, “Ms. Megs, I didn’t know what to wish for for my birthday, but this is better than anything I could ever wish for. Thank you for making me feel special.” “That was so rewarding for me to hear because he was able to articulate in his own words the exact reason why Beverly’s Birthdays exists, and for a lot of younger kids, they’re not old enough to grasp that concept,” Megs said. At the end of the day, all of the boys hugged Megs and thanked her for their birthday celebration. When asked what the best part of providing birthday celebrations is, Megs said, “The joy on the children’s faces. These kids have more struggles in their lives than one can even possibly fathom, and they are so open to give you their love and attention. They’re so thrilled to have someone there focusing on them and making their special day.” Currently, there are more than 2,200 identified homeless children living in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County and more than 18 different agencies that provide services for homeless individuals and their families in the greater Pittsburgh area. In the next five to seven years, Megs hopes Beverly’s Birthdays will be the provider for birthday celebrations for all homeless children in the Pittsburgh area. As a result of Beverly’s Birthdays, more than 45 children will receive a guaranteed birthday celebration in 2012. “Beverly will have no idea how the impact of those words, that statement she said to me, changed the trajectory of my life,” Megs said. To learn more about Beverly’s Birthdays and how you can get involved, visit www.beverlysbirthdays.org. or scan this QR code to watch a video and see how Beverly’s Birthdays is making a difference.

It’s football season, and according to the November 1951 issue of The Alpha Xi Delta, it’s “no longer just a man’s game.” In that same issue, Jean Schier, Syracuse ’48, appeared on the cover throwing a “pretty pass” at Alpha Xi Delta’s first Powder Bowl game at Syracuse University, and five thousand spectators showed up to watch the event. We hope you enjoy this year’s football season. Which team are you rooting for? Tweet us - @alphaxidelta! www.alphaxidelta.org

Foundation Inspiring Service The Alpha Xi Delta Foundation awards AmaXIng Challenge Grants to both collegiate chapters and alumnae associations to help them dream bigger and increase their fundraising and awareness efforts for Autism Speaks. In 2011-2012, five college chapters were awarded AmaXIng Challenge Grants. Collectively, these chapters raised more than $54,000 for Autism Speaks. Tiffany Willis, New Orleans ’11, recaps Delta Epsilon’s AmaXIng Challenge: Step It Up New Orleans Walk that was held in February 2012. “After the walk, the spirit and pride we had in ourselves really became so powerful. We never thought we would raise $12,500 with such a small chapter, but with big hearts and determined minds we knew we could do anything we put our minds to,” Tiffany said. “We could never say thank you enough to the Foundation donors. They truly did make this event the best it could have ever been. We are forever grateful for all they do to increase the pride and strengthen the minds of all chapters of Alpha Xi Delta across the United States. Delta Epsilon really thanks them from the bottom of our hearts.”

Living Our Symphony

Sisterhood is a By Sarah Jensen Farwell, Southern Maine ’02

Journey

The founding members of the Epsilon Rho Chapter, including Judi Lord, at the chapter’s Installation in 1968.

The experiences I have had and continue to have as a member of Alpha Xi Delta often amaze and inspire me. Having been involved in multiple capacities as an undergraduate student and as an alumna volunteer have shown me time and time again that actions taken can have effects not seen for many years, if ever realized, that make a difference. One instance in particular completely took me by surprise and stands out as an experience I truly will never forget, nor take for granted. On September 28, 1968, Alpha Xi Delta installed its 136th chapter at Gorham State College in Gorham, Maine. The Epsilon Rho Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta was the first Panhellenic organization to colonize and form on campus, and today it is the last one remaining. One of the thirty-nine Sisters initiated into that first class was Judith

Jackson, Southern Maine ’68, (also known as “Judi” or “Jet”). While at Gorham State College, she met the man she would later marry, Roger Lord. After graduation, they settled in the area, raised a family and he taught Industrial Technology classes at the local high school. More than 34 years later, on November 22, 2002, I had the honor of being initiated into the Epsilon Rho Chapter at what now is the University of

Judi was a founding member of the Epsilon Rho Chapter at Gorham State College, now the University of Southern Maine.

This photo was taken years before Sarah and Tim realized their connection with Judi, Alpha Xi Delta and the Boy Scouts. | Sarah (third row, third on the right) attended Epsilon Rho’s initiation in 2011 as the Chapter Advisor. | Judi and her husband, Roger, with Sarah and her husband, Tim, at the University of Southern Maine.

Southern Maine, and I began my incredible journey with Alpha Xi Delta. While in college, I met my husband, Tim, and we married shortly after I graduated. A few years ago, I got involved again in Alpha Xi Delta through the Southern Maine Alumnae Association and became the Epsilon Rho Chapter Advisor. In February 2012, I was copied on an email response from the Epsilon Rho Chapter President to an email from Judi. She wanted to donate some memorabilia she had come across while cleaning out her attic. I replied to her email, iterating that it was wonderful to hear from her and to let her know of the alumnae involvement opportunities available to her. She surprised me in her response by asking if I was related to Tim Farwell. I answered that he was my husband. She then invited me to join her for coffee to pass along the memorabilia, but she showed up with more than just Alpha Xi Delta items. Come to find out, Judi and her husband, Roger, were instrumental in my husband’s childhood, helping him become the person he is today. I unknowingly had long heard stories about both Judi and Roger from my husband when he described Boy Scout trips that he had taken with them - camping in rural Maine, traveling across country to see Mount Rushmore and other cherished childhood memories. The Lords were my husband’s Boy Scout leaders when he was a child! In addition to the Alpha Xi Delta memorabilia, which included vintage photographs, the program from the Installation Banquet and a 1966 songbook, Judi showed up with really old pictures of my husband from when he was about eight or nine years old and on those trips! My husband has known Judi nearly all of his life and commented, “I never knew she was an Alpha Xi Delta. Neat!” We chatted for hours about Alpha Xi Delta, Boy Scouts, my husband and her sons (who were around the same age), family and Sisterhood. We talked about life. The intertwined paths that our lives had unwittingly taken gave me chills. Judi was part of the founding group that started Epsilon Rho, an unforgettable experience in and of itself for her that would impact hundreds of women who would follow her as members of Alpha Xi

Delta’s Epsilon Rho Chapter, more than 600 initiated members to date. I was one of those women, and it was an experience that has molded me and impacted my life, an experience that would not have happened had she and her class not colonized. My husband experienced a lot of Alpha Xi Delta with me, while I was in college and after college through my volunteer capacities. Judi and her husband mentored my husband as a child, molding and impacting his life and the lives of so many others. And today, I am the Epsilon Rho Chapter Advisor trying to mentor and assist the current membership of the organization that Judi was a founding member of. The story goes even a step further when I tie Judi’s husband back in, as he taught at the local high school for more than 30 years. Epsilon Rho alumnae, including some recent graduates, remember him as the beloved teacher they knew in high school! By being involved, giving back and selflessly volunteering their time, the ripple effect and influence of their good deeds is mindblowing. The Lords are the best example of what we all should strive to be: good people, caring about others and making a difference. I don’t think Judi and her husband ever set out to be extraordinary, but that is exactly what they are. They got involved in their community in various stages of their lives, and they gave back in a way that they were able to. That is one of the biggest pieces of advice that I try to pass along to Epsilon Rho today as a Chapter Advisor: Get involved in your corner of the world, give back and always try to make a difference. Judi attended Epsilon Rho’s Initiation last spring for the first time in more than 35 years. It was wonderful to have her there and the collegians asked her many questions about her experience. She proudly wore her Quill, as well as the colony pin she received in 1968. She mentioned that the ceremony was as she remembered it. It was very special for all of us involved to have her there that day. Last summer, I randomly saw Judi at a barbecue in town, at the home of a family that has long been close with both the Lords and my husband. Not knowing the story of our fateful meeting, someone asked if we knew each other. With a smile, Judi said, “Oh yes, we’re Sisters!”
