MIND YOUR PEAS AND Q’S! Shelling peas (also called sweet peas or garden peas) have firm and rounded pods that must be removed before eating. The peas are sweet and may be eaten raw or cooked; these are the common peas that are sold shelled and frozen. Shelling peas get starchy and mealy as they get larger or if they are not cooked quickly after they are picked. Snow peas, also known as Chinese peas, are often used in stir-fries. They are flat with very small peas inside; the whole pod is edible, although the tough "strings" along the edges are usually removed before eating. Snow peas are mildly flavored and can be served raw or cooked. Snap peas, also known as sugar snap peas, are a cross between snow peas and garden peas. The whole pod is eaten and has a crunchy texture and very sweet flavor. Snap peas may be eaten raw or cooked. There may be tough "strings" at the seams of the pods that need to be removed before being eaten, but stringless varieties are also now available.

GROWING POPCORN Growing popcorn and sweet corn in the same garden produces disappointing results for both crops because of cross pollination. SOIL REQUIREMENTS Medium to coarse textured soils warm slightly faster than fine-textured soils and should improve germination, emergence and seedling establishment. High clay content and/or poorly drained soils will weaken the root, reduce yield and increase lodging. FERTILITY A soil test will show the nutrient needs. Popcorn needs abundant amounts of nitrogen. PLANTING A soil temperature of 50-55 degrees F is necessary for best germination. SEEDING With irrigation, seed 20,000 to 27,000 plants per acre (4-6#/acre). Plant fewer for dry land. Sow the seeds 1-2” deep, spaced 6-8” apart. When 5” tall, thin to 12” apart. A series of short rows, 24-36” apart, ensure good pollination. IRRIGATION Popcorn needs 1 1/2 to 2” of water per week from either rain or irrigation. INSECT CONTROL Most, if not all, of the insects that attack field corn can also attack popcorn. HARVESTING Harvest when the husks are completely dry and the kernels are hard. Hang the ears in mesh bags in a well-ventilated area. After removing the kernels from the ears, store in an airtight container at room temperature.

PLANTING UNTREATED SWEET CORN The biggest enemy your sweet corn seed faces in the spring is cool, wet soil. Even if the corn is treated with a pink dust coating, placing that seed into soil below 65º F will slow germination, giving more time for fungal diseases and insects to claim their share of your seed. You’ll get much better results in soil that’s 65-75º F, especially with untreated and organic sweet corn seed. Test your soil temperature about an inch down, be patient, and watch your corn spring to life.
