VIKING CORN, SOYBEANS, AND ALFALFA 2022 “Providing honest, simple products and agronomic advice.”
Casey Staloch, Viking Seed Dealer
“Is it Drought-Tolerant?” will likely be the most common question about hybrids this year. And with good reason. Although the drought did not affect everyone equally, you don’t need us to tell you it has been a tough season. We are here to provide answers to that question and any others you have about our hybrids and varieties, and to talk you through your other farm-planning decisions for 2022. We can’t answer every question, but we’ll be honest about that and either find the answer or provide you with a contact or resource that will help guide your decision. Honesty and transparency are core values for our company. After 98 years
in the seed business, we know our customers depend on us for real information.
may apply insecticide with your planter. Either way, you can save some money on seed.
Simplicity is another important value for us. We are here to provide quality seed of the best conventional, non-GMO varieties of corn, soybeans, and alfalfa. Other companies can try to integrate crop insurance, rewards programs, and carbon credits. We’ll focus on the seed.
Roundup Ready
Workhorse Hybrids
Thank you for farming to feed us all and for taking care of the land on which we all depend. And thank you for your business. We believe in farmers; we believe in the importance and future of U.S. Agriculture; and we are committed to providing you with seed and agronomic advice that allows you to farm the way you want to.
WorkHorse Hybrids (page 4-5) are part of our effort at simplicity. These hybrids are selected with your less-productive ground in mind. The $115/Bag price is catching some attention, and we believe the consistent performance will impress you.
Looking for SmartStax, Roundup Ready Corn or E3 Soybeans? While we no longer carry traited corn in our Viking Brand, we do carry Anderson Seed Corn and Stine Soybeans. Give us a call for more information.
Insecticide-Free Option Many fields do not benefit from insecticidetreated seed, so we offer Insecticide-Free Seed Corn (Page15). You may have a rotation that minimizes the potential for insect pests, or you

WEED MANAGEMENT IN CONVENTIONAL NON-GMO CORN We sometimes get asked, “How do I control weeds in conventional non-GMO corn?” The answer is not as complicated as some might think. Many of the products used on our corn are already implemented in glyphosate programs; we are essentially just removing the glyphosate component. Below are some of the programs that a few of our customers and local herbicide dealers are recommending for their conventional, non-GMO corn acres.
Always read and follow the label instructions and consult your herbicide dealer. We are not herbicide experts; we are presenting these programs as examples of the kinds of spray programs being used by farmers to grow conventional non-GMO corn that can’t be sprayed with Roundup or Liberty.
FARMER, CHEMICAL & SEED DEALER IN NORTHWOOD, IOWA:
CFS CO-OP IN BLOOMING PRAIRIE, MINNESOTA:
VIKING CUSTOMER IN NEW HAMPTON, IOWA:
I always recommend a 2-pass program. You can buy a single-pass program with a warranty, but you are always going to be out there a second time.
Pre-Emerge
Pre-Emerge
Balance Flex at 3 oz. per acre, or Acuron at 48 oz. per acre
Harness or Warrant, or another Group 15 herbicide. I definitely recommend using a higher rate on heavier soil where foxtail or other grasses might be problem.
Pre-Emerge If you live west of I-35 and south of I-90, I strongly recommend Balance Flex. I use a full rate of 6 oz. But it is not legal in Dodge & Fillmore counties. If you live east of I-35 and north of I-90 (or somewhere else where Balance Flex is not legal), I recommend Harness or Surpass at a full rate (2.25 – 2.5 pints). If you have sandy soil with a CSR below 60, you need to cut that back to something like 1.5 pints. Post-Emerge I use 1 oz. of Armezon (which is the same thing as Impact), and I tank-mix 1 pint of Outlook (which is very water soluble and only takes ¼ inch of rain to activate) and ½ lb. of Atrazine 4L. I like the 4L because I have fewer nozzle problems. Some people use a full warranty program through Bayer of Harness and/or Balance, followed by Capreno + ½ lb. of Atrazine that often gets spiked with an additional ½ lb. of Laudis.
Post-Emerge Diflex Duo, 24 oz. per acre + Destiny, 8 oz. per acre + Class Act, 24 oz. per acre + Interlock 4 oz. per acre. Class Act is a hard water conditioner that meets ammonium sulfate requirements. Interlock is a deposition aid to reduce fine spray particles and help with canopy penetration and a drift reducer.
FARMER & SEED DEALER NEAR ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA: For the last two years I have paid for a singlepass program with a guarantee. That way if there is a problem they come out and fix it.
Post-Emerge Callisto + Atrazine when weeds are not more than 6-8 inches tall. I like to use about 1.5 pounds of atrazine to help take care of the waterhemp. Some folks have said to mix the atrazine with a pre-emerge, but I say don’t; it is more effective in a post application. I used Accent this year as a spot-spray treatment for grass control where the preemerge herbicide did not get enough rain to activate fully.
Both years they started with a full rate of Accuron. In 2020 it worked like a charm and they never had to come back. In 2021 it did not rain so they had to come back. Pre-Emerge Acuron at a full rate Post-Emerge (if necessary) Laudis + Accent

Not all of your ground can grow 250 bushels of corn, so why pay for 250 bushels of genetics? Most farms have some ground that is just not as productive, where it seems like no matter what you do the corn won’t yield more than 150-180 bushels. Our Viking Workhorse Hybrids are the right seed for this.

AT A LOWER COST! $115/80,000 SEED UNIT* 88-84W 84-day CRM

4. Fungicide treatment only. No Cruiser insecticide.

Are these hybrids “old” or “close-out” seed?
No. We have selected and produced these are hybrids specifically for this purpose.

You can't grow non-GMO grain for a specialty market if the seed you plant has high levels of GMOs. That's why Viking offers seed guaranteed to be 99% or 99.9% GMO-free.

INSECTICIDE-FREE VIKING SEED CORN MOST SEED COMPANIES TREAT ALL OF THEIR SEED CORN WITH INSECTICIDE.
WE OFFER YOU THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE. Several university studies demonstrate insecticide-treated seed protects grain yield only in limited circumstances. If you don’t need insecticide-coated (Cruiser, Poncho, etc.) seed corn, don’t pay for it!
FARMER’S CHOICE – SAVE $10 PER BAG! Save $10 per bag when you order insecticide-free seed corn! Your conventional corn will still be treated with a package of fungicides to protect it from seedling diseases and 2 biologicals (SabrEx & Excellorate) to enhance its health and yield. Please specify “insecticide-free” when ordering by Jan. 15.

DUAL-PURPOSE C O RN HY BRI DS We test our hybrids, in the field and in the lab, for silage quantity and quality against leading silage hybrid genetics at similar maturities. Only those hybrids that show consistently excellent tonnage and quality get the Dual-Purpose designation.
Why choose Viking Dual-Purpose Hybrids? Because grain has energy. Our Dual-Purpose hybrids are exceptionally high-yielding grain hybrids, so you are going to get a lot of grain in your silage—which equates to higher energy. Dual-Purpose hybrids have an optimal grain-to-stover ratio and have excellent standability compared to low-lignin specialty silage hybrids.

Alfalfa Variety Selection When selecting an alfalfa variety, the key considerations are: how long will the field be in production, how many cuttings a year do you plan to take, what is the end use for the forage (quality needs), and what are the unique challenges for the field location (disease / insects)?
ALFALFA VARIETY KEY CHARACTERISTICS HD: Highly Digestible — Alfalfa lines with the HD distinction are tested for quality from the very first selection by the breeders. These lines have low lignin levels resulting in milk/ton numbers that are first in class. HQ: High Quality — Highest quality alfalfa lines from WL, one of the largest alfalfa breeding programs in the world. AP: Aphanomyces Race 2 Resistance — Farmers in northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin face challenges with Aphanomyces root rot in alfalfa. If you are in one of these regions choose a variety with race 2 Aphanomyces resistance. These varieties also have resistance to race 1. LH: Leaf Hopper Resistance — These varieties maintain strong yields and forage quality under heavy pressure from leafhoppers.

Winter Survival Index (WSI)
Disease & Pest Resistance
A standardized test that measures the ability of alfalfa varieties to withstand severe winters. Varieties are rated from 1 (superior) to 4 (adequate). If a variety does not have a WSI rating, you can use the Fall Dormancy as a guide. The most persistent alfalfas are those with low WSI’s and good pest and disease resistance.
Poorly drained fields require alfalfas with better disease resistance (especially Phytophthora and Aphanomyces). Select varieties with superior disease resistance to ensure a long, productive stand.
Resistance
The measure of how tall an alfalfa plant grows after the last cutting and before going dormant for the season. An alfalfa with a lower number goes dormant earlier in the fall.
HR = Highly Resistant R = Resistant MR = Moderately Resistant LR = Low Resistance S = Susceptible
Disease Resistance Index (DRI)
Forage Quality
30 = highest, 6 = lowest
Varieties with a high Relative Feed Quality (RFQ) are designated with either HQ or HD (WL 349HQ & Viking 374HD).

Seed alfalfa into a firm seed bed ¼-inch to ½-inch deep Spring seeding: April 15 to May 15 (southern Minnesota) Fall seeding: August 1 to 15 (southern Minnesota) Adjust these dates accordingly further north and south Plant 15-20 lbs/acre for alfalfa alone; 15 lbs/acre mixed with grasses • Optimum pH: 6.7 - 6.9 (soil test and lime accordingly 12 months prior to seeding) • Maintain phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) at optimal levels
Margaret Smith, Albert Lea Seed Forage Agronomist
Alfalfa Seed Treatment All of our alfalfa seed is coated with one of these OMRI-listed inoculants:
APEXTM GREEN HYDROLOC Encapsulates each seed in a mix of micro-nutrients, including iron, zinc, & manganese; bacteria; and a hydrating polymer for improved water uptake and seedling growth. Contains rhizobia strains to promote nodulation. Hydrating polymer holds water around seed, improving germination and seedling survival, especially under adverse conditions.
PRE-VAILTM Clay-based pre-inoculant improves early seedling vigor through increased root development and excellent nodulation for higher yields. Contains high levels of rhizobia for nitrogen fixation – 100 million viable cells per gram – and Azospirillum bacteria to promote plant growth.
