Non-GMO Corn & the Bottom Line By Mac Ehrhardt, Co-owner

What you’re not losing with Viking Conventional Non-GMO: Maximum yields, weed control programs, and profits. What you are losing: Trait license fees. Many farmers have realized their farm operations no longer depend on traited seed for corn and soybean management. These farmers are making the switch to conventional, nonGMO, but they aren’t leaving high yields and performance behind.

Roundup-Resistant Weeds

Roundup herbicide once was the “easy button”, but resistant weeds are making it hard to justify the additional costs of the Roundup-Ready seed traits. Now GMO farmers need even more herbicides in the tank. However, an effective weed control program is achievable without Roundup and the associated trait fees.

BT and Rootworm Pressure

Rootworms and cornborers have evolved around some of the Bt traits. This has driven an arms

race of BT stacked corn traits— and a never-ending increase in trait fees. On some farms, rootworms are either not an issue due to crop rotation or they are managed with correct insecticide placement. The ideal solution is to add a hay crop or small grain to your rotation to break the lifecycle of rootworm and other yield-robbing insect and disease pests (which also gives you more on-farm feed or potentially another cash crop).

The Promise of Yields

The most expensive trait-stacked genetics are not a guarantee for high yields. In fact, stacked corn hybrids are usually bred as conventional, non-GMO inbreds. The traits are bred in later.

Yield potential is determined by genetics, not by traits.

Traits can protect yield, but they do not increase the yield potential of the genetics. When weeds and insects are controlled, the ‘good breeding’ genetics in Viking conventional corn means yield! Our focus is simple. Viking brand Corn & Soybeans is 100% committed to bringing you the very best conventional, nonGMO hybrids and soybean varieties. We know that, at the end of the day, it’s not how much money you spend on seed: it’s how much money you have in the bank after harvest that counts. We appreciate your business, and thank you for farming.

VIKING CONVENTIONAL, NON-GMO CORN Viking focuses 100% on producing non-GMO hybrid seed corn and soybeans. Our relationships with breeding programs, research and product-development trials, and our business planning are concentrated on bringing you the very best non-GMO hybrid seed corn and soybean seed available.

GMO Purity in Seed Corn The presence or absence of GMOs in your seed corn may not matter to you personally, but it may be extremely important if you are selling grain to a non-GMO grain purchaser. We cannot guarantee that all of our hybrid seed corn is free of GMOs. But if you need seed that is very low in GMOs, we do guarantee the purity of Viking Pure hybrids (99%) and Viking Ultra-Pure hybrids (99.9%). Start pure and stay pure to protect your non-GMO premium.

Insecticide-Treated Corn Don’t Need It? Save $10/bag

Good news! University studies demonstrate insecticide-treated seed protects grain yield only in limited circumstances (references below). If you don’t need insecticide-coated (Cruiser, Poncho, etc.) seed corn, don’t pay for it! Most seed companies treat all of their seed corn with insecticide. Now you have the option to choose.

FARMER’S CHOICE — SAVE $10/BAG Save $10/bag when you order insecticide-free seed corn!* Your conventional corn will still be treated with a package of fungicides to protect it from seedling diseases and 2 biologicals [SabrEx & Excellorate] to enhance its health and yield. * Please specify “insecticide-free” when ordering by Jan. 15. Available only on these hybrids: 42-92, 51-95, 99-00, 51-04, 48-08

POLLINATOR SAFE

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE SEED CORN COATED WITH INSECTICIDES?

There are definitely corn planting situations where insecticide-coated seed is economically justified because the growing seedlings are at high risk from insect pests such as white grubs, wireworms, cutworms, and seed corn maggots. We recommend insecticide-coated seed corn for for fields with: • • • • •

High-residue, including fields with significant biomass from cover crops Recent applications of manure Alfalfa or sod going into corn production High organic matter History of insects feeding on corn seedlings

Fields that don’t meet these criteria are good candidates for planting insecticide-free seed without losing stand or yield. ARE INSECTICIDES HARMFUL?

Insecticides are developed to kill insects that damage growing crops, but can also kill off-target beneficial insects which are essential to life on earth. Insect populations around the world are declining at an alarming rate (see link below). Research has shown that insecticide-coated seed is a contributing factor in the decline of pollinator populations, including bees. Neonicotinoid (and other systemic insecticide) seed coatings can do an excellent job of protecting growing seedlings from certain insect pests. We believe that when insecticides are properly tested, labeled, and applied they can be an important tool of production agriculture. But they are not needed on every field. We also believe farmers should be able to choose the appropriate level of seed protection for their farm. DUAL PERFORMANCE

WHAT ARE VIKING DUAL-PURPOSE SILAGE HYBRIDS?

Dual-Purpose Grain/Silage Hybrids are grain hybrids that also produce excellent quality and tonnage for silage. We test our hybrids, in the field and in the lab, for silage quantity and quality against leading silage hybrid genetics at similar maturities. Only those hybrids that show consistently excellent tonnage and quality get the GS designation. Why choose Viking GS? Because grain has energy. Our GS hybrids are very high-yielding grain hybrids, so you are going to get a lot of grain in your silage, which equates to higher energy. GS hybrids have an optimal grain-to-stover ratio and have excellent standability compared to lowlignin specialty silage hybrids.

SOYBEANS AND GMOS We understand that seed purity is extremely important to farmers growing grain for a non-GMO contract. We have not only committed the Viking Brand to seed purity, we have made significant investments to establish the seed industry’s first non-GMO Purity Guarantee. All Viking soybeans labeled with the Ultra-Pure label are guaranteed to be 99.9% GMO-free. We are able to meet this high standard on select soybean varieties through purification, isolation, and stringent testing. All Viking soybeans not labeled with Ultra-Pure are produced under the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association’s Non-GMO Seed Program, which traces, inspects, and verifies that the seed in the bag is 99.5% GMO-free. We do not guarantee that any of these varieties are 100% free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We do not guarantee that grain harvested from this seed will be marketable as non-GMO grain or meet contractual agreements.

ALFALFA SEED TREATMENT All of our alfalfa seed is coated with one of these OMRI-listed inoculants:

APEXTM GREEN HYDROLOC

Encapsulates each seed in a mix of micro-nutrients, including iron, zinc, & manganese; bacteria; and a hydrating polymer for improved water uptake and seedling growth. Contains rhizobia strains to promote nodulation. Hydrating polymer holds water around seed, improving germination and seedling survival, especially under adverse conditions.

PRE-VAILTM

Clay-based pre-inoculant improves early seedling vigor through increased root development and excellent nodulation for higher yields. Contains high levels of rhizobia for nitrogen fixation – 100 million viable cells per gram – and Azospirillum bacteria to promote plant growth.

* Variety not stated

Winter Survival Index (WSI)—A standardized test that measures the ability of alfalfa varieties to withstand severe winters. Varieties are rated from 1 (superior) to 4 (adequate). If a variety does not have a WSI rating, you can use the Fall Dormancy as a guide. The most persistent alfalfas are those with low WSIs and good pest and disease resistance. Fall Dormancy (FD)—The measure of how tall an alfalfa plant grows after the last cutting and before going dormant for the season. An alfalfa with a lower number goes dormant earlier in the fall. D isease Resistance Index (DRI)— 30 = highest, 6 = lowest

26 • Viking Corn & Soybeans Catalog

Disease & Pest Resistance—Poorly drained fields require alfalfas with better disease resistance (especially Phytophthora and Aphanomyces). Select varieties with superior disease resistance to ensure a long, productive stand. Resistance HR = Highly Resistant R = Resistant MR = Moderately Resistant LR = Low Resistance S = Susceptible Forage Quality—Varieties with a high Relative Feed Quality (RFQ) are designated with either HQ or HD (WL 349HQ & Viking 372HD).

ALFALFA: PLANTING BEST PRACTICES Seed alfalfa into a firm seed bed ¼-inch to ½-inch deep.

Adjust these dates accordingly further north and south.

R

Plant 15-20 lbs/acre for alfalfa alone; 15 lbs/acre mixed with grasses Optimum pH: 6.7 - 6.9 (soil test and lime accordingly 12 months prior to seeding) Maintain phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) at optimal levels throughout life of stand. Soil test in fall and supplement as needed.

ALFALFA VARIETY SELECTION

When selecting an alfalfa variety, the key considerations are: how long will the field be in production, how many cuttings a year do you plan to take, what is the end use for the forage (quality needs), and what are the unique challenges for the field location (disease / insects)?

ALFALFA VARIETY KEY CHARACTERISTICS HD: Highly Digestible — Alfalfa lines with the HD distinction are tested for quality from the very first selection by the breeders. These lines have low lignin levels resulting in milk/ton numbers that are first in class. HQ: High Quality — Highest quality alfalfa lines from WL, one of the largest alfalfa breeding programs in the world. AP: Aphanomyces Race 2 Resistance — Farmers in northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin face challenges with Aphanomyces root rot in alfalfa. If you are in one of these regions choose a variety with race 2 Aphanomyces resistance. These varieties also have resistance to race 1. LH: Leaf Hopper Resistance — These varieties maintain strong yields and forage quality under heavy pressure from leafhoppers.
