New binder for clean label tablet formulation Ribus releases Nu-BIND as an alternative to synthetic and plasticised binders RIBUS Inc. internationally launched its latest clean label excipient for tablets, Nu-BIND, at Vitafoods in Geneva. NuBIND is RIBUS’ sixth product launched as part of its clean label portfolio. RIBUS ingredients work as alternatives and functional solutions for conventional and certified organic products to improve production efficiencies and allow for clean label declarations.

Chicory root fibres make you feel better Consumers are increasingly interested in the role that nutrition can play not only in their physical but also in their emotional well-being.

Fibre up for an improved quality of life!

There is a growing interest in the effect that the gut microbiome has on our feeling of wellbeing. Roughly 7 in 10 believe it plays an important role in overall physical health. What’s more, 3 in 5 believe it impacts also their mood and daily energy levels1.

The gut is where the magic happens The digestive tract plays a crucial role for health and well-being. In the past, researchers, medical doctors and nutritionists/dietitians focused on the activities in the upper part of the intestine, the so-called small intestine, where digestion and absorption take place. The lower end of the intestine is the colon, also called the large

The link between digestive health and inner well-being with chicory root fibres It has become obvious that the colon has a key role to play for overall and long-term health as well as inner wellbeing. Prebiotics are a unique tool to positively influence this organ and support its function by small dietary interventions. As of today, inulin and oligofructose (chicory root fibre) are the only clinically proven plant-based prebiotics. More than 30 human intervention studies are demonstrating the increase in bifidobacteria after intake of inulin or oligofructose from chicory roots. Enrichment of foods and drinks with these fibres is easy to apply and very tasty.

A review of the science of prebiotics is laid down in a consensus statement developed by the International Scientific Association for Probiotic and Prebiotics (ISAPP) in 20172 and in a meta-analysis prepared by So et al.

20183. Chicory root fibres support the colon’s health by increasing beneficial bacteria contributing to improved bowel regularity. The production of short-chain fatty acids upon prebiotic fermentation of chicory root fibres stimulates reflexes which make the bowel contents move. Furthermore, the increase in bifidobacteria means a higher bacterial biomass leading to more faecal bulk. In addition, stool softening occurs as more water stays in the colon instead of being re-absorbed. All this exerts an effect on stool frequency and/or stool consistency supporting overall bowel regularity within the normal range.

These scientifically demonstrated improvements in regularity go hand in hand with an overall “feel-good” perception, measured scientifically by designated questionnaires addressing quality of life.

Fully reacted mineral salts The use of mineral salts containing unreacted compounds can lead to formulation stability problems and inaccurate ingredient declarations on the finished product The emphasis on health and nutrition has focused attention on mineral supplements. With the market for mineral supplements continuing to grow and becoming more sophisticated, the need for good chemistry at the point of production becomes more apparent.

In October 1994, the U.S. Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). DSHEA called for the establishment of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) for dietary supplements. The FDA notice of proposed rule making for dietary cGMPs was first published in 1997, and has yet to be finalised.

The lack of published monographs on many widely used mineral salts and instances of non-compliance with established monographs reinforce the need for good chemistry and accurate content disclosure. This regulatory ambiguity is a cause of concern for supplement manufacturers leaving them wondering: Are the products I buy safe for their intended use? Are the products fully reacted? Do the chemical manufacturing processes produce the desired product?

The process for manufacturing fully reacted pure salts involves the reaction of an acid and a base in an aque-

ous solution and the precipitation of a salt compound.

Negative ramifications of an incomplete reaction

Dissolving the reactants provides the opportunity for a complete reaction to occur. This stands in contrast to a dry blend of an acid and a base. In blended or partially reacted products, the mixing of the acid and base might be complete but the reaction might not proceed to completion because of lack of opportunity. The lack of dissolution inhibits solvation of the reactants and leads to a slower and ultimately a less complete reaction.

Unlike a fully-reacted salt, the blend might be unstable over time because of a slow but on-going reaction, as the alkaline minerals react with any acidic ingredients in the formula.

This instability can cause the blend to harden over time or tablets to disintegrate. A blended product might be low or high in pH because of an imbalance in the acid-base stoichiometry. The pH imbalance can lead to problems with the product integrity. Structure and content uniformity can suffer if the product contains a mineral blend and not the fully reacted salt. In compounding operations, blends can separate based on differing physical characteristics. >>

Most fully reacted salts have a fairly neutral pH Blended products might exhibit an acidic or alkaline pH. Infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and numerous other techniques can be used to differentiate between a fully reacted mineral salt and a blend of reactants. Depending upon the mineral salt, the addition of acid to the sample can demonstrate the presence of unreacted mineral base. If carbonate is present, effervescence will occur. In the case of hydrated Magnesium Citrate Tribasic, a material not fully reacted when put in water will cause a reaction and temperature increase.
