SEPPIC expands its SEPIFILM™ range with a new ready-to-use coloured film coating specifically designed for nutraceutical applications, with colouring foodstuffs as the sole colour source SEPPIC has developed a patent-pending coating designed specifically for nutrition using colouring foodstuffs as the only colour source. SEPIFILM™ NATurallyCOLored rises to the challenge of coloured film coating in nutrition in the EU by offering bright and stable colours while being free from any E colours, aluminium, but also azo dyes, TiO2 and GMO. Therefore SEPIFILM™ NATurallyCOLored is ideally suited to meet the demand for naturalness in nutrition as well as the new EU requirements: Regulation 380/2012/EU regarding use of aluminium in food additives and Regulation 232/2012/EC regarding use of colors E104, E110 and E124.

Colouring foodstuffs Colouring foodstuffs are obtained from edible plants and algae that undergo only traditional food preparation processes so as to fully retain their food characteristics. They are declared as ingredients on labels. Colouring foodstuffs are not part of the NATCOL classification of colours because they are not colour additives. Therefore they do not have an E number. High quality film coating SEPIFILM™ NATurallyCOLored is a HPMC-based ready-to-use instant release film coating in powder form offering good film adhesion and clear logo definition. ISOMALT DC: The direct way to success in compressed products The highly flexible sugar replacer ISOMALT DC delivers tablets with almost any desired hardness and dissolution characteristics, making it well-suited for e.g. lozenges, chewables and effervescents The expectations of a sugar replacer are not only to confer body, texture and sweetness, but also that existing processing equipment can be used for all applications without major
changes. These requirements are highly fulfilled by the range of Isomalt variants, developed by BENEO. ISOMALT DC is the variant specifically designed for direct compression.
• Natural pleasant sweetness
The pure and natural taste of this sugar replacer, the only one made from real sugar, gives compressed products an additional competitive edge. It does not produce undesired cooling effects, but enhances flavours of all kinds.
• Good stability and storage attributes
Due to its low hygroscopicity, compressed tablets have extremely good stability and storage attributes. ISOMALT DC is highly flexible and delivers tablets with almost any desired hardness and dissolution characteristics, be it lozenges, chewables or effervescents. It can be used on conventional

machines (e.g. rotary press without any binding agent). Furthermore, ISOMALT DC provides an excellent flowability, it does not stick to tabletting tools and requires only low release forces. Regarding production and transport of compressed tablets, products with Isomalt show minimal friability. Being inert, this sugar replacer is a perfect carrier for any active ingredients, and the good mouthfeel of the final tablets is a compelling argument. Article 390

Zero calorie natural sweetness SweetLite erythritol provides a unique opportunity to formulate sugar-free pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals with good taste and mouth-feel and without gastrointestinal discomfort SweetLite erythritol is a perfect alternative to sugar as a bulk replacer and sweetener thanks to its sugar-like taste and mouth-feel characteristics. SweetLite is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol manufactured from dextrose by a natural fermentation process. Unlike other polyols, SweetLite has zero-calorie status in accordance with EU, European Directive 2008/100/EC. Furthermore, it is tooth-friendly since it is not fermented by oral bacteria. No gastrointestinal discomfort SweetLite has a very high tolerance compared to other polyols and when consumed normally it will not cause gastrointestinal discomfort. The reason is that erythritol is absorbed from the small intestine and is therefore not fermented in the large intestine. The maximum dosage of SweetLite before it becomes laxative is 0.80 g/ kg weight. This is 2-3 times more than other polyols such as xylitol and maltitol and 3-4 times more than mannitol and sorbitol.
Applications SweetLite is very well suited for use in many of both solid and liquid formats in pharmaceutical and healthcare products. Amongst its known product features is its superior stability providing a perfect masking agent of metallic or bitter aftertaste associated with some pharmaceutical or healthcare formulations. SweetLite can be utilised in healthcare powders, tableting, syrups, lozenges, and medicated chewing gum products. It has excellent usages in many nutraceuticals including instant liquid food supplements. SweetLite is non-hydroscopic and provides superior powder characteristics and stability making it an ideal carrier for capsules and actives. Equally, SweetLite erythritol is an excellent ingredient for direct compression and tablets produced using this ingredient can reach rigidity similar to DC grade sorbitol. Technical aspects SweetLite is a powder with transparent white brilliant appearance. It has a sugar-like taste and mouthfeel and has 70% of the sweetness of sucrose.
SweetLite dissolves rapidly in water and exhibits outstanding heat and acid stability. It is non-hygroscopic and has excellent flowability and stability in powders. Moreover, it can be used in combination with other sweeteners Article 391
SweetLite erythritol • Natural sweetener • Sugar-like taste and mouth-feel • Zero-calorie status • Easily digested • Tooth-friendly • No effect on the blood sugar

The Baobab trees are found throughout Africa, but mostly in the hotter, drier regions. The trees have fruit as unique as the tree itself. The fruits may be round or oval shaped with a furry coating around a tough shell that shields the soft and nutritious pulp inside. Local African people refer to the fruit pulp as “monkey-bread”. The traditional usage of Baobab fruit includes the treatment of fever, diarrhoea and malaria. Today, baobab is used for soothing sunburns and as an anti-inflammatory. Being high in calcium and an antioxidant, the fruit is additionally consumed by lactating mothers in order to assist milk production. (continues on page 5 >>)

Functional flour carriers Limagrain Céréales Ingrediénts offers a wide range of 100% natural carriers providing good flowability, no dust and good absorption Carriers are indispensable to facilitate the use and conservation of active molecules such as aromas, nutriments and enzymes. The carrier is not the main component of aroma, nutriments, seasoning or enzymes. Nevertheless the choice of the carrier is important to give all the value to your ingredient or additive. The carrier should bring inertia (low microorganism level, no enzymatic action, low humidity) or even better: improvement (better flowability, no dust, good absorption). Limagrain Céréales Ingrédients (LCI) offers a wide choice of carriers with functional flours thanks to their great expertise of cereals, unique association of selected variety and their Farigel heat treatment process. LCI’s ingredients are 100% natural and are declared as “wheat flour”, or for gluten free development, “maize flour” and “rice flour”. The flour is a very simple ingredient well-known to everybody and often present in the full recipe of your customer.
Thanks to the Farigel process and specific variety, the functional flours are characterised by a control of the particle size to give: • No dust: functional flours carriers have been developed to avoid the particle with a size lower than 50µm for a maximum of security limiting - health risk (asthma & allergies) - environmental pollution - fire and explosion risk • High mechanical strength: the Farigel process brings to the carriers resistance to attrition and breakage during freight and processing preventing dust formation. • Great consistency: functional flour carriers show a narrow particle size distribution to facilitate a homogeneous distribution of active agents on the carrier and in final application. • Excellent flowability: functional flours exhibit an excellent flowability mainly explained by the elimini-
nation of dust particle, but also thanks to the specific shape of particles and their low level of moisture. Thanks to the starch gelatinisation control, the Farigel process gives an excellent and homogeneous absorption of active components on the carrier. Limagrain Céréales Ingrédients has developed a wide range of carriers which are used for flavours, vitamins, colorants, natural extracts, seasoning, or enzymes to answer to specific customer requirements such as specific particle size, moisture content, gelatinisation level. Limagrain Céréales Ingrédients stays at your disposal to develop tailor-made solutions. Article 394

Organic agave for beverages & nutritional bars Formulate organic sports drinks, soft drinks, smoothies and bars with organic fibres and sweeteners made from agave Agave may be known for its use in tequila manufacturing, but agave is also a source of inulin and FOS (fructo-oligosaccharide) soluble fibres of high quality. Nekutli, a Mexican corporation formed by farmer groups and native American organisations, offers a range of certified organic
soluble inulin and FOS and syrups providing fibres and sweetness for numerous beverage and food supplement applications.
Organic soluble fibres Metlin branched inulin and Metlos FOS are extracted from blue agave and are certified organic. Agave is an excellent source of inulin and FOS due to its high content of these ingre-dients (up to 28% wet basis) and an almost perfect DP distribution. Metlin and Metlos both have a high purity (min. 90%) and are produced using state-of-the-art proprietary technology in a facility located in Cuquio near the agave centre of Mexico. This favourable location enables Nekutli to offer products of high quality while minimising the use of energy and water in accordance with the company’s environmental policies. Applications Metlin and Metlos are extremely soluble in cold water (up to 15% at 4°C). This allows their use in applications where solubility is crucial, and they can be used in many organic applications such as soft drinks, smoothies and acidified milk drinks. Depending on the application, they can be used to increase the fibre content, improve the texture or mouth-feel, reduce the sugar and/or calories and in general convey the message that organic food and fibres are good for your health.
Organic agave syrup Nekutli also offers a range of certified organic agave syrup from Agave salmiana, ideal as a sweetener. During manufacturing, the agave syrup is evaporated under vacuum. To lower the evaporating temperature (<40°C), enzymes are used to hydrolyze sugars into fructose/dextrose, and most of the salt and amino acids are removed.
7
Agave tequilana (Blue agave) The blue agave is known for its use in the production of Tequila, but it is also the species that Nekutli uses as source for inulin and FOS: METLIN inulin and METLOS FOS. Both are high purity powders (min. 90%). METLIN is also available as syrup.
This makes Nekutli’s product very clear, sweet and mildly flavoured as opposed to traditionally produced agave syrup, which is often very dark and has a characteristic smell and strong flavour. The agave syrup is high in fructose – approx. 1.4 times sweeter than refined sugar – and offers an equivalent sweetness for nearly half the amount of carbohydrate calories. Fructose does not stimulate digestive insulin secretion as do other sugars and does therefore not create a “sugar rush”. Applications Nekutli’s organic agave syrup is produced in four different grades varying in flavour and colour. (continues on page 8 >>)

>> The lighter grades of agave nectar are flavour neutral, enhancing the natural flavours of coffee, tea, fruit, beverages, fruit smoothies and yoghurts without altering their natural flavour unlike some of the other natural sugar substitutes on the market. The amber and dark grades of Nekutli’s organic agave syrup offer the delicate flavour of agave with increasing intensity. The amber grade is much like honey and delicious in e.g. tea and protein drinks. Calories per serving: One serving (tablespoon) weighs 21 grams and contains approx. 60 calories.
Agave salmiana Nekutli obtains aguamiel (honeywater), the raw material for producing agave syrup, from agave salmiana. To get aguamiel the quoite (stalk) is cut off before it grows. A whole in the center of the plant forms where the aguamiel can be collected. It is full of nutrients, as it contains large amounts of carbohydrates, fructan, vitamins and amino acids. Subsequently, the aguamiel is treated for removal of impurities and it is enzymatic hydrolysed, filtered and concentrated into a 70o Brix syrup.
