1. What are you most excited about in this collaboration with Altenew?

I am most excited about the product getting into your hands. While the design process is always fun, the best and most gratifying part is seeing how you all play with the products because you all have amazing ideas and are doing such innovative things.

2. Your designs are known for their fresh and cheerful aesthetic. Can you walk us through your creative process and where you draw inspiration from?

Thanks - I love that you think they are fresh and cheerful. I find much inspiration in the joys in everyday life. The inspiration comes from the world around me. I try to think of things that spark inspiration and joy, while also trying to remain aligned to what’s true at the given moment. It’s about being present, being open and being curious. Life is complex and we are dynamic beings ever evolving, yet at the core, I think I really just wanted to create something I hadn’t seen before that I thought people would really enjoy using in their everyday life

3. What inspired you to collaborate with Altenew, and how did the collaboration process go? What was your favorite part of the process?

I’ve always had admiration for Altenew and their innovative and fun products. The company seems like a creative powerhouse that’s inclusive. It amazed me how many people are involved in the day to day operations. It was really fun for me to work with

others since I largely work on my own these days. It felt like a very collaborative process where they were so open to my ideas and trusting of my design aesthetic. My favorite part was really the entire process and seeing the visions come into fruition.

4. Out of all the products you designed for Altenew for this collaboration, which one is your favorite?

If I had to pick one, I think it would be the stamp sets. Wait, there’s more than one. Well, while I am thinking about it, there’s also a stamp set coming up with a workshop I am doing with Altenew and I cannot wait to see how people use that one too.

5. What do you hope people feel or experience when they see and use your Altenew designs?

Delight, joy, and an urge to get creative

6. We interviewed you last 2019 for our Designer Spotlight Feature. Looking back at your answers from three years ago, have there been any significant changes to who you are as a crafter and artist?

Honestly those answers still ring true, though I feel like my focus has changed and evolved a bit. I really want to continue empowering others to live their best creative lives.

7. What advice do you have for other crafters seeking a career out of their passion?

Get really clear on why you want to turn your passion into your profession. Then get even more clear on how you want to feel. Approach it more from a lifestyle perspective at first and then try the things you really enjoy. Even if it’s doing things just for the fun of it. For example, I just loved scrapbooking when I discovered it in 2007. I loved buying the supplies, using them and also fell in love with the community of people. Then I applied for design teams and worked my way through the industry, always focused on wandering toward the wonderful. The pay wasn’t much at first, but then after sticking with it and being intentional about how I wanted to feel on a day-to-day basis, I was able to shift my priorities and go with the flow. Allow yourself to make mistakes and missteps along the way too, it’s ok to redirect and change course. Ask yourself a lot of questions and don’t be afraid to go deep. Consult with people who are in the position you are hoping to be in. Ask them hard questions. I think clarity is really key, but so is just being open and curious. Oh and make sure you have fun along the way!
