Turkish Jewellery Sector
T
he Turkish jewellery sector is the inheritor of a production tradition of the Anatolian soil that can be traced back to 5000 years ago. Today the Turkish jewellery sector producers combine this heritage with an understanding of the state-of-the-art design and production with the help of the developing technology. Listed among top 5 countries in the world golden ornament production, Turkey is shown as one of the two countries that are regarded as leaders in design by the world jewellery authorities. Moreover, exports of the jewellery sector in Turkey have been steadily increasing since 1980s. While the sector gained knowledge, experience, and most important of all, confidence, through its exports to the Middle East market until 1986, it made a real start when it entered into the US market in 1987. On the other hand, the sector’s exports revealed its true potential after 2000. As a result of this development, jewellery exports that had not even reached 10 million dollars at early 1990s reached 1.6 billion dollars at the end of 2008, which shows the level the sector has attained. Turkey has become the 9th largest gold jewellery exporter in the world. Turkish gold and jewellery products which blend advanced design, knowledge and technology together are being exported to more than 100 countries, ranging from USA to Japan, from Russia to United Arab Emirates. The exports of the Turkish Precious Minerals and Jewellery Sector exceeded 1.6 billion dollars in 2008, which is 70% up compared to the export figure of 2004. While the Turkish economy has accomplished a great pace of development in the last five years, the Turkish Jewellery Sector contributed significantly to this development. Today, our sector has great potential, with 15 high-tech driven giant companies, 30,000 retail stores and some 2,500 small and medium-scale producers. All in all, jewellery sector is one of the promising sectors of Turkey. We hope to reach export figure of 5 billion dollars within five years and increase our share in world jewellery sector. W
e take the pride in hosting The World Jewellery Conference held annually in the most important jewellery centers of the world. We are happy to welcome the most significant agents of the jewellery of the world. Today the world jewellery sector means 130 billion dollars. Diamond sector comprises 65 billion dollars of this amount. The annual gold demand of the world is 2500 tons. Turkey is among the leading five countries with its 300 tons demand. Turkish jewellry industry which has forged ahead in the last five years has 10 billion dollars potential with its 15 supreme companies using the latest technologies, 30 thousands retail stores, around 2500 small and medium sized enterprises and more than 250.000 employees. With these figures Turkey ranks second after Italy in the world. We as JTR started out with a new approach bearing the responsibility of 5000 years historical and cultural heritage and representing our true strength. From now on JTR will be the sole name that represents Turkish jewellery in the world. We express that we are decided to create a legal infrastructure suitable to the sectoral realities, work discipline and brotherhood since the very moment we took the office. Now, with our JTR breakthrough we realized our target. Our union is developing projects to create a legal infrastructure suitable to the sectoral realities, work discipline and brotherhood. Among these projects the most important one is the project for positioning Turkey as a brand country in jewellery sector. In line with this vision The World Jewellery Conference is a milestone in Turkey’s leadership in the world. Istanbul’s being the organization venue will be the most important message of the Turkish jewellery sector to the world. This organization is not a final destination for us on the contrary it is just a starting point. We will continue with new projects. To maintain our status in the world and to rank foremost in the jewellery world our companies and our union have much to do in the sense of brand, design and added-value. Our main target is to position Turkey as a brand country in the world and to become the world leader in 10 years. JTR- Turkish Jewellery Association is a semi-governmental professional establishment which deals with all of the export activities of its members. It was established in 2003, now has around 1062 members. The main aim of the Association is to increase the export volume of Turkish Precious Stones and Jewellery Sector. Moreover the Association conducts to increase competitive power by high quality. Within this context the main functions of Turkish Jewellery Association are as follows: - Providing sectoral collaboration - Improving the export volume of the sector in line with the benefits of our country. - Organizing training courses, seminars and meetings related with its subject matter. - Supporting its members in the national and international level in case of facing any problem related with export/trade activities. - Organizing trade fairs, arranging promotional activities, founding laboratories. TURKISH PRECIOUS MINERALS AND JEWELLERY INDUSTRY Turkish Jewellery Industry Export of jewellery products made of precious metals has increased significantly over the last 10 years in Turkey. This increase elevated Turkey's standing to one of the global leaders in the industry. Turkey has the total capacity to produce 400 tons of gold and 200 tons of silver annually; however this capacity is not fully utilized. Turkey mostly ranks among the top-five countries in the world in gold jewellery production. And also, world jewellery authorities point out Turkey as a rival to Italy in this field. The production and export figures that are published also in international professional magazines approve this situation. At present, there are more than 50 major companies in which 200-1500 qualified workers are employed. The industry is a huge one amongst

the Turkish manufacturing industries and employs about 250 thousand people currently. The center for gold jewellery production is Istanbul. However, production in Ankara and Izmir is also extensive. Some cities in East and Southeast Anatolia also produce gold jewellery. A gold stock exchange was established in 1995 at Istanbul and a gold refinery began production in February 2002. T u r k e y ' s S e m i - P r e c i o u s S t o ne s Although there has not been any clear definition of semi-precious stones, it is accepted that stones except from diamond, emerald, sapphire and ruby are semi-precious stones. Semi-precious stones are used mainly in jewellery and manufacturing ornamental objects. In jewellery, minerals and stones used with silver have usually been defined as semiprecious stones. Special stones (black amber, iridized opal) used together with gold hardly have presence in the market since a worldwide habit of usage is uncommon. Semi-precious stones, drawing immense interest on the part of the jewelry sector in recent years, are partially present in Turkey; when conditions of geological formation are considered, it is highly

However, for tapping semi-precious stones in Turkey that have production potential, training should be available on the subject and those living in the vicinity of deposits should be made more conscious. While workshops in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir working at simple cutting, shaping and sculpting the stone and hobby shops selling precious and semi-precious stones and minerals partially create a market for domestic production, in the past decade, investments have been aimed at building facilities to carve semi-precious stones. For example, it was achieved the project of bijouterie production from obsidian stone supported by KOSGEB (Small and Medium Industry Development Organization) in Kars.

J e w e lle r y S e c t o r E x po r t s In a stably increasing trend in exports, this sector has continued its pace also in 2008 despite the global recession in the world, reaching 1,507 million dollars exports by an increase of 1,84% in value compared to 2007. The largest export markets of the sector were United Arab Emirates(319 million USD by an increase of 21%), USA ( 161 million USD by a decrease of 38%) and Russian Federation (142 million USD by an increase 40%) followed by Germany, Italy, Poland and Kazakhstan in 2008.

IGE targets to stimulate local business and international attention with all other globally competitive enterprises which will provide Turkey to be a central hub for the gold business, due to its strategic position, as it lies in the heart of a major gold trade area, exposed to Middle East, Europe and Gulf region. Turkey is within the top five countries with the high fabrication and demand of gold and import of diamond in the world. Through the recent developments in Turkish financial markets, gold has tended to have an active role in financial markets besides its social role in Turkish society. The structuring model for the gold market aimed to convert the existing idle gold savings into active financial resources and canalizing them into investments by the existence of Istanbul Gold Exchange. Gold prices in Istanbul Gold Exchange, is determined by the market and the Exchange is dealing to coordinate worldwide prices and domestic gold prices. Due to the launching of the Istanbul Gold Exchange, local gold prices have been parallel to worldwide gold prices. Gold bars which are ruled to be imported to Turkey have the purity and the standards accepted worldwide, gold trading has been taken into record and the system have gained a transparent structure. Gold traded on the Exchange is exempted from value added tax. On fabricated gold, value added tax is not levied on the gold content of jewellery, but only on the labor and trade markup. Fair market structure and technology which is driven by the Exchange enabled the industry to have a radical change of outlook, efficiency on the costs, introduction of technology and a new found focus on exports. The Turkish gold jewellery market has undergone a major revival since the early 1990s with the traditional and long-standing historical affinity for gold jewellery adjusted for modern tastes. The development of good quality manufacturing has made the industry a substantial success not 11

ISTANBUL GOLD EXCHANGE just locally but also in catering for tourists and in a lively export business. Turkey is now the world’s fourth largest market for gold jewellery, its third largest manufacturing centre and its second biggest exporter. A combination of economic revival and successful promotions saw jewellery demand at a record in the last years. There are around 5,000 workshops and 40,000 retailers spread throughout the country, and the sector employs an average of around 250,000 people. The annual export is estimated at USD 2.5- 3 billion, part of which is from exports to wholesalers and retailers abroad while the bulk comes from sales to tourists sold in the local market. Istanbul Gold Exchange is observed as unique by its structural environment and regulatory role in Turkish and international finance markets with different kinds of investment instruments. Since the opening, the Istanbul Gold Exchange has improved relations with jewellery sector and foreign exchange representatives. IGE, is respected as inspirational market and regulating model of gold sector liberalization. So far, it has received many visitors from financial institutions and newly developing gold markets. As a first spot trading gold exchange in the world, IGE was founded with the principle that gold trading was to be executed in semi-electronic system trading floor. After developing an innovative market structure, the IGE has worked on, screen-based fully electronic trading system and enhanced its trading system launching remote access by end of 2008 in order to provide investors 24 hours trading to ensure higher competition, more liquid and efficient market conditions for domestic and foreign investors.

The Istanbul Gold is a welcome addition to the investment landscape in Turkey as a Gold ETF. It represents a major innovation in facilitating the ownership of gold bullion as a security trading and opens up a new asset class for investors building diversified portfolios with low cost keeping the gold physically in Istanbul Gold Exchange Vault. We have made important steps to integrate international communities. In March 2008 we were accepted to be an associate member to London Bullion Market Association, a reference institute for precious metals trading in the world. By May 2008 we have participated to the 33rd World Diamond Congress where our membership has been voted and accepted with 2 other newly coming Diamond Exchanges, Panama and Australia. The Exchange in August 2007 became a member of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which aims to curb the flow of conflict diamonds; with 47 participants’ worldwide accounting for 99.8 percent of global production of rough diamonds. The rigorous process requires participants to certify that shipments of rough diamonds are free from conflict diamonds. For the coming years, our target is to establish a secure and organized market condition in Turkey for diamond and precious stones trading. Turkey is launching its first diamond market and aiming to become a regional trading hub for the precious Stones. Istanbul Gold and Diamond Exchange is also working on a project to launch a foreign exchange market and aimed to see some tangible progress on this objective in 2009.

The Grand Bazaar The heart of Turkish Jewellery in Istanbul Grand Bazaar is accepted as the unique and the most important center of the Turkish Jewellery. The oldest and biggest shopping center of the world, Grand Bazaar, is at the center of the city. Very similar to a huge labyrinth with its 60 streets and over 3000 stores, Grand Bazaar is an exceptional and worth seeing shopping center. Reminding of a city, the covered center has expanded and evolved over years. The bazaar built in 1461 by Fatih Sultan Mehmed in the place that used to have stores during the Byzantine era, is regarded as the fascinating jewellery of one of the most beautiful cities of the world with its 550 years history. The original structure was a 15 century remnant covered with a block dome after evolving streets were covered and some additions were made, the whole complex turned into a shopping centre. The bazaar used to be known as a centre hosting certain occupational groups on each street, implementing strict control over all kinds of manual work and handicraft and having respect to commercial ethics and traditions. All kinds of valuable stuff from cloth to jewellery, gun to antique furniture, were offered to sale by families who had expertise on the issue. Although the bazaar renovated after it underwent earthquake and a few big fires at the end of the last century, some characteristics were lost. On the main street of the bazaar there are mostly jewellery stores and on the side street that is united to the main street there are gold stores. Grand Bazaar is alive and crowded all through the day. Just at the 14
beginning of the bazaar there are luxurious big stores selling all kind of craftwork which is made in Turkey and exported to overseas countries. Jewelleries and handmade carpets are the finest examples of traditional Turkish craftwork. These products are sold with their quality certificates and originality documents and sent all over the world with full-credit. Apart from jewelleries and carpets, high quality silver, bronze, ceramic, onyx and leather craftworks compose the rich collection of “Turkish Souvenirs”. Grand Bazaar covering 31 hectares field, hosts 4400 stores, thousand of lodging rooms, workshops, a lot of fountains, small and big mosques. Besides jewellery, carpet, leather craftworks and souvenir stores, famous fiark Kahvesi (Oriental Café) and Havuzlu Lokanta (Restaurant with Pool) worth to see as well.
