KEEPING IT REAL From The Publisher
January is always one of my favorite times of the year! It reminds me of new beginnings. When I decided to publish ALT Magazine, it was after much prayer and soul searching. God answered those prayers and here we are, 9 years later, celebrating the wonderful work of a fabulous staff! I could not do what I do without them. I have people ask me regularly how I juggle the many tasks I have in my life. I will give you my secrets...but don’t tell anyone!! 1. Surround yourself with the best loyal staff, who doesn’t create drama, that you can afford. 2. Treat your staff with respect, love and kindness. 3. When you know you aren’t going to remember what you thought about in the middle of the night, pick up your iPad, that’s next to the bed, and email yourself! Go back to sleep. 4. Don’t start out with a lot of responsibility. I’ve been adding to my list for many years! 5. Never take yourself too seriously. 6. Pray for guidance in everything you do. God will answer, although it’s not always what we want to hear. With all successful people, you find that each have their own way of making life work. Our new yearly feature, 16 To Watch In 16, gives you a little bit of insight into 16 of our area’s finest men and women. They will be accomplishing a lot this year...and you should take note to watch them! You could even ask them to give you a few tips on how they balance their personal and business lives...and make it work! In addition, I was super excited to include Heath Jones, and how he works a successful business. Always remember to love what you do, and Heath is a prime example. I’ve always loved horses and would have loved to learn to ride them better than I did as a kid. My main memory of horses is one that involved my sister on a runaway horse. I still laugh at the memory... guess it’s a good thing she wasn’t hurt! She always seemed to be getting knocked off any horse my dad bought us! Needless to say, Heath has a lot more skill than I will ever have, even in my dreams! And that’s why it’s great that his dream is coming true... and he loves doing it. Of course, January is also the month we announce our Readers Choice winners. We had so much participation this year that we were amazed! The results show that our readers are taking notice!! Some stayed the same, but there were many changes this year! Check them out! I can’t wait to see what this year brings! With the addition of ALT Graphics, we are busy and excited about creating custom t-shirts, printed materials and websites for our customers. It keeps us smiling to see the appreciation in our customers’ faces...no matter which business they are using!! I wish you and yours a very happy New Year, full of smiles and laughter! I’m going to go love on my fur babies now!! They always make me smile! (Especially Gianni...my main man!! LOL)

CHASING DREAMS From The Editor
“It’s time to fill this house with laughter like it used to be. Just because you’re up in heaven, doesn’t mean you’re not near. It’s just a different kind of Christmas this year.” -- Mark Schultz
As you’re reading this, everyone is wrapping up a wonderful holiday season and getting ready to embark on those New
Year’s resolutions. As I am writing this, I am just now preparing to enjoy my Christmas with my amazing family and friends. But this year is going to be a bit different...
This is the first Christmas we will have spent without a very dear and loved person who played a huge role in the spirit
of the season. Even though everyone is hard fast to keep all of the same traditions alive, we all know it’s going to be different, tough, and even sad at times. I know that we are not the only ones who will have experienced this loss throughout the holidays. Whether it be because of death, long distance, military deployments, whatever the reason, so many have had to spend the holidays apart. And for you, I pray that God brings you comfort, peace and joy throughout the difficult times. I know I am blessed with the family and friends that surround me during the holidays and every other day of the year,
So as you are making and fulfilling those New Year’s Resolutions, make one to spend more time with family and
friends, to cherish each and every moment you have together. Because in the end, it’s not about the presents or the things, it’s not about making those same old resolutions to eat healthier, make more money or exercise more. It is about the people you surround yourself with and the memories you make together. Make this a year of love. A year to be able to look back on all of the memories you haven’t created yet. You never know when these will be the last moments, the last holidays, the last memories you may have with someone. So make the best of the times you have with the ones you love.
Happy New Year! Lindsey Gordon Editor

The Good, The Bad & The Great WORDS BY Anne Fruge Grenado
Heath Jones grew up around his grandmother’s love for horses in Ashdown, Arkansas. Heath calls his grandmother, Sharon Gatlin, a “sort of thrill seeker.” The one time she got Heath to ride, the horse began to buck a little. She told him to “hold on and go through it,” much to Heath’s dismay and protest. In fact, Heath was raised to keep his hands clean and stay out of puddles, but “sometimes we grow up much different than we were raised,” Heath says. Instead, It was a high school dare that changed this “city boy’s” life. Heath’s friend, Sara, dared him to do something crazy that day and ride her horse, Kicker, as fast as he could. Though hesitant at first, especially after hearing the horse’s moniker, Heath and Sara took off across a field where only the barbed wire stopped them. It was then that this now-horse trainer’s love affair with horses began. Setting aside his business degree at Texarkana College, Heath “had horses on his mind,” and decided to start working for a local horse trainer where he learned the pros and cons of the business and how to break and train horses. “Horses are intuitive, curious and, for the most part, they want to be your friend,” Heath says. “Depending on how we as humans interact with them, we influence them for better or worse. Most of the time when you hear about problems with a horse, those are problems created by man, and not what horses were put here for.” In the beginning, Heath rode in most every western riding event: barrel racing, western pleasure, horsemanship and poles. But he was drawn to reining horses.“Starting out, I took whatever work was available and began to build my reputation,” Heath says. “I had some hard falls at first. Once, a horse flipped over backwards on me, and I’m still paying for that one today with a bad shoulder. In the end, I just liked reining the best, and I’ve spent years building up my business so that I could focus on what I love. You want a reining horse or want to learn how to ride in this event? I’m your man.” Reining is a western riding competition where riders guide their horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins and stops. When reining riders go to shows, they are given a pattern of maneuvers to complete. Trainers work with riders and their horses at home, and then at the show, the rider and horse must bring together their training with the pattern they are given. “I love the control of the reining event: the slides and stops, the change in speeds. It’s beautiful to watch,” Heath says. “The horse that made me want to do reining was my mare, Breezy. After showing, she became a broodmare and has had twelve babies on the
farm. Once I loved the sport, I started raising reining horses and began developing the type and look I wanted.” When Heath first started competing, he learned the hard way about selecting reining horses and combating the nervousness of competition. One funny story in particular involved a horse named Hollywood. “I was told how wonderful this horse would be, and I was so naive at the time, I trusted everything I was being told,” Heath says. “He slamdunked, or threw me, several times, but I managed to get my bluff in on him and got enough gumption to try to take him to a show.” Hollywood and Heath traveled to Monroe, Louisiana, along with Heath’s grandmother, Sharon, and her friend, Karen. “I was so excited
about this show; all the way there, I told them to clap and cheer from the stands when I competed,” Heath says. “I went out and did the wrong thing the entire time. I had to run him into the fence to get him to stop, but through the whole thing, my grandmother and Karen were whistling and cheering and clapping. They had no idea I messed up. Just shows you how great my family is, though. They are my greatest supporters.” This humbling moment helped Heath learn how to accept the good with the bad of this unpredictable business. He “went in with hope and came out embarrassed,” but he learned to let go of his nerves. “Every person at these shows
has been there,” Heath says. “It’s all a learning experience, and the horse training community is very tight knit. You prep the horses and the riders, show them what to do, and do your homework. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s nature, and we are working with nature. You pick up and learn from your mistakes.” It was when Heath was first starting out as a trainer that he came into contact with Miss Starlight Smoke, a horse that would change his life. Heath traveled with a fellow trainer to an IRS sale, where the owners were forced to sell off the assets of their farm. Heath viewed the sad condition of the sale: years of hard work and a state-of-the-art program sold off for its parts. As he looked around, he made eye contact with the oncebeautiful mare. “She looked so pitiful, so sickening in that condition,” Heath says. “I thought to myself, ‘One day, I don’t know when or how, you are coming to my house.’” Heath’s legacy with Miss Starlight Smoke would continue throughout his career. Through the next several years, Heath continued to build his

business, Heath Jones Performance Horses, in Ashdown. He became a one-man team on his farm with a daily routine that included feeding, cleaning out stalls, training his own and client’s horses, competing in shows, and breeding hoses. Heath takes a certain number of clients in the training process and provides the one-on-one attention and coaching that helps develop novices to learned and accomplished riders. “The interaction with my clients is one of the best parts of my job,” Heath says. “I love to see them grow. Most of the time, the first time I meet them, they know nothing about reining, and you can see their faces light up when they do it the first time. You can see the fire in them, and it reminds me a lot of myself. Some days, I wonder, ‘Why in the world am I doing all this?’ but when I see my clients happy and the love instilled in them for this sport, it’s all worth it.” Heath travels to shows with both his own horses and client’s horses. The season usually lasts from February to November and includes shows every two weeks in places like Waco, TX; Ardemore, OK; Marshall, TX; Oklahoma City, OK and many more. The show weekend consists of getting horses ready to show,

grooming, warming up, networking and visiting with other trainers and riders. This past September in Waco, TX, Heath won his first National Reining Horse Association trophy for taking first in all three divisions of the open classes: open, intermediate and limited. “Even after ten years in this business, I am still learning and growing in hopes to better my horsemanship,” Heath says. “The reining horse community is so supportive, people are going to cheer, no matter what. If you have a bad run, they forget about it in five minutes. If you have a good run, they talk about it and celebrate it.” One day, Heath decided to sell Hollywood and when he showed up at the sale, he saw a beautiful little filly that was a daughter of Miss Starlight Smoke. Remembering the connection he had with the horse, when he saw the filly, he decided to buy her. However, the horse was naturally more predisposed to participate in western cutting events, so Heath sold her as a two-year-old, and she was shown successfully on the cutting circuit. After this, Heath lost track of Miss Starlight again. In the meantime, through his all-inclusive work on the farm, Heath found another passion: breeding horses. In the show circuit’s off-season, he
became an expert at breeding and artificial insemination. He even set up baby monitors in pregnant horses’ stalls so that he could come running at a moment’s notice. Heath began raising horses to sell and currently has three stallions to raise foals and promote studs. “My passion is horse babies; breeding is where my heart is,” Heath says. “Breeding season is a lot of work, on top of training, but it’s so exciting. When one of my studs and a mare I love, that I’ve shown and made money on, are going to have a baby, I immediately began wondering what color it will be or which horse it will look more like. It’s just a really cool thing.” No matter how many times Heath has delivered a baby horse, he says the immediate connection between mare and foal is what strikes him. Even his beloved mare, Breezy, who has had 12 babies, reacts the same time she sees the baby. “If you ever wonder if there’s a higher power, it’s hard not to realize it at times like this,” Heath says. “Nature just takes over. Even a mare that’s never had a baby has motherly instincts that just kick in.” Horses carry their babies for 11 months, and Heath has about 5 to 10 pregnant mares each season. Through the breeding season, Heath has to put in even more hours than normal, getting up early each day and sometimes staying up through the night with a pregnant mare. “When you are self-employed, you are the one who will either make or break the business. It’s stressful, but I like it,” Heath says. A few years ago, Heath purchased a breeding to Topsail Whiz, a reining champion and leading NRHA sire, to breed with his horse, Breezy. Topsail Whiz has sired over ten million

dollars in offspring earnings, and Heath says he’s the kind of horse that shows great charisma. One of Heath’s stallions, The Royal Whiz, is from this bloodline, and raising this bloodline on his farm is an important part of Heath’s vision for the future of his business. “Topsail Whiz’s owner did a great job promoting him and showing him; he’s brought a lot to the industry,” Heath says. “His daughters are great broodmares, as well. Bloodlines are extremely important these days; events are highly specialized, and the days of all-around horses are no more.” Horses are weaned at six months, and then Heath makes the decision to sell or keep them. He particularly enjoys when training clients want to purchase one of his reining horses. Unlike a regular sale, when Heath may never see the horse again, he has the pleasure of training the horse and watching it grow. He also gets to witness the joy the horse brings to clients. Of course, even in the breeding business, there are unpredictable tragedies. Heath says it doesn’t matter whether it’s his favorite

or least favorite mare, when they have a baby, he’s immediately invested. Any time he loses one, it’s not only a financial tragedy, it’s an emotional one. “Raising and training horses taught me about responsibility; I grew up fast,” Heath says. “You get your heart set on a baby, and if something goes wrong, you have to adjust your dreams and plans. It’s not only heartbreaking, it’s a loss of investment and time. In life we want to have things a certain way, and when it’s not like we want, we are shattered by it. But, being in the horse world has taught me that you have to be blessed by the moment. Things just happen, especially in nature. It teaches you to look at the positive side of things.” In 2014, Heath was scrolling through Facebook looking for a foal from the sire, Gunner, that Heath had taken an interest in. He came across a solid white filly and upon closer inspection, Heath realized it was a baby from Gunner and the elusive Miss Starlight Smoke. Heath immediately inquired about the horse and got approval from his bank to buy the filly. However, the owner kept encouraging him to look at pictures of a weanling colt, also from
Gunner and Miss Starlight Smoke. Once Heath saw the photos, he knew he had to have the beautiful white-faced young horse named Sniper Smoking Gun. Though he was an additional $5000 over the price of the filly, Heath went back to the bank for approval and was able to purchase him. “You have to stay consistent in this business; it’s what people want to see,” Heath says. “You never quit learning and you never quit chasing that one great horse that’s going make you, whether that’s in the breeding pen or the show pen. Sniper has already changed my business. The caliber of horse he is, the outpouring from people who want his babies, the talent that he brings all means the future is bright. The sky is the limit with this horse, and I’m just glad that I had the opportunity to get him at this point in my life and career.” Sniper is now three-years-old, and he is already started being shown successfully. Last year, Heath made a spontaneous trip to Georgia. On the way, Heath remembered that Miss Starlight Smoke was living in Alabama with a very well known horseman named Don Green. On a whim, Heath called him and asked if he was interested in selling the “ol’ girl.” “I wasn’t expecting anything, but Don says, ‘You know, that mare didn’t get in foal this year, and you’ve always loved that old mare, haven’t you? You’ve loved her for ten years. You come on over and I will make you a deal.’” Heath stopped in Alabama and loaded Miss Starlight Smoke into the trailer. “It was this instant good feeling, all this emotion and time keeping up with her and her babies, waiting for the day when I would actually bring her home,” Heath says. This past spring, Heath bred Miss Starlight Smoke and his stallion, The Royal Whiz, a son of Topsail Whiz and Heath’s first reining horse, Breezy. She is expecting a foal in 2016. “This baby is bringing together three horses that I’ve loved throughout my career. It doesn’t matter what color it is or what it looks like, this is what is rewarding about this business,” Heath says. “If you are going to be in the horse business, you have to be invested. There is good and bad, but the good outweighs the bad. You just keep pushing forward.”

Chad Matthews
-- Writer & Filmmaker Missional Storyteller •
• •
•
Chad has been married to a beautiful artist named Marjorie for nearly nine years. Together, they have three children, Eisley, Emery and Copeland. The two are proud to announce that they are expecting a fourth child in August 2016. They are a growing family of artists and dreamers, “who point to the Rhino when describing the heart of [their] family,” explains Chad. “A rhino weighs 5,000 pounds and is able to run 30 mph. Problem is, a rhino can only see 30 feet ahead. A group of rhinos is known as a CRASH. When a group of rhinos begins to run, they crash through everything. Nothing stops them. They run fast and run hard and if something gets in their way, they move through it. We refer to this way of living as The Matthews Life.” Chad uses his art of creative writing and filmmaking to point people to Jesus and compel people into gospel action. “I enjoy the process of storytelling. I believe it is a relational, creative process that allows me to invest in people. Stories change the way we see the world. They force us to make decisions about how we feel. If I told you 1,000 kids died of hunger last month, you may say, oh, that’s terrible! But if I told you a STORY of only 1 kid dying of hunger last month, you would weep and attempt to do whatever it takes to ensure it never happens again. Stories move us in ways facts never will. The best advice Chad ever received was, “A writer writes. A filmmaker makes films. A creator creates.” If you’re going to be an artist for a living, you have to wake up and work as hard as you possibly can at being an artist. You cannot merely create when you feel like creating. You must write even when you don’t feel like writing. You must make films even when you don’t feel like filming. An artist creates art every single day. Wake up and get at it.

Janet is married to Stephen Bolls. They have three lovely children, Lakyn, Lainen and Dawson. Janet and Stephen are co-owners of Anytime Fitness Richmond Road, and also own and operate Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt in Texarkana. After the success of the original Orange Leaf in Texarkana on Stateline, they decided to expand their frozen yogurt business to the Texas side and wanted to add a complimentary business to join it. After much research, the two decided on Smallcakes, to offset the seasonality factor of the frozen dessert business. Smallcakes opened October 2015, and while Janet felt the community’s response would be positive, she never dreamed of the excitement in store. The feedback and ongoing sales volume have exceeded her expectations. Janet operates all of her businesses with the customers and the community in mind. They regularly support local charities through fundraisers and donations and do their best to satisfy the needs of each customer and provide a great experience.

Robin Bridges, Beverly Carter, Jaclyn Gooding, Lindsey Gordon, Ashley Harris, Amy Steed & Brenda Williamson Texarkana Friends of the Shelter, a 501(c)3 organization, was founded in 2014 by a group of animal rescuers and pet lovers. In August 2014, the group had its first meeting. They are a select group of people from all walks of life – their common bond being a genuine concern for animal welfare. The work they do is not for everyone. Many who start out with the group will find it difficult to continue due to the many emotionally challenging aspects of volunteering at the Animal Care & Adoption Center (Shelter). More times than one can imagine, the appalling condition of animals brought in to the Shelter by concerned citizens, their owners or Staff is shocking; and yet the animals continue to give back unconditional love their spirits are truly amazing. The group’s mission is to support all aspects of work done by the Shelter Staff. This includes working to increase animal

adoption and redemption rates while minimizing the number of euthanized animals; educating our community regarding animal care and welfare issues; and helping care for the medical needs of all sick and injured animals that come through the Shelter. One rewarding aspect of what they do involves community service. This includes: Sponsoring the vetting of adoptable animals at our shelter. Assisting the shelter with financial needs. Setting up information booths at local events throughout the year. Participating in local parades and festivals to promote the work we do. Annual fundraising projects, including the Fur Ball, held in April, and Oktoberfest, held in October. The work the Friends of the Shelter do is solely funded by private donations. 100% of all donations go toward the work done for the animals at the Animal Care and Adoption Center. As volunteers, the Friends group share many wonderful moments with the animals and their adoptive families. This keeps them focused and on task toward meeting our goals.

Suzanne McMillen & Dr. Mitchell Glass -- Pediatric Dentistry of Texarkana Suzanne (Twinkle the Tooth Fairy) •
•
By day she is the Marketing Director, Admin Assistant and Twinkle the Tooth Fairy at Pediatric Dentistry of Texarkana. Suzanne is the wife of Kenny McMillen and has a son, Korbin Neely along with two step children, Dean and Lizzie McMillen. Suzanne is an adventurous, loving, passionate and determined person. All of these traits shine through her when she puts on her Twinkle dress and visits the children. “The best moments of being at Pediatric Dentistry of Texarkana are simply seeing the joy in a child’s eyes, whether it be receiving a toy at the end of their visit or when I go visit schools for the Tooth Fairy Program. The moment the Tooth Fairy walks in, the children are in complete awe. The advice Twinkle gives the children about dental hygiene actually sticks with the children. They’re in a magical moment.” --Suzanne

Dr. Glass is a Pediatric Dentist at Pediatric Dentistry of Texarkana. His family consisting of “one incredible super human wife and three atomic bomb little boys,” according to Glass. To Dr. Glass, the most important thing about Pediatric Dentistry of Texarkana is that they try to show every kid they come in contact with that they care about them. “The dentistry is the easy part, anyone can do that, but to genuinely show a kid care and kindness is more important to me than anything else I do,” says Glass.

Dr. Gary Stading -- TAMU-T Dean of College of Business & Full Time Professor at Texas A&M University - Texarkana •

Gary is married to Susan and they have three children, Jason, Jordan and Rachel. Growing up, Gary’s father always had the best advice and many life’s lessons to impart with him, but one that has stuck with him most is, “Treat everybody fairly and with respect.” Gary lives out this advice in his everyday business. “In my position, I believe you have to be student oriented and always have the best interest of the students at heart. This includes being fair. Students regularly ask me for concessions for which I can neither grant or will grant because these requests are unfair to other students. This makes me look like I am a task master, but I try really hard to maintain fairness for all. Ultimately, I believe the students respect you more for maintaining that fairness,” explains Gary. On his weekends off, Gary and his wife go to breakfast every Saturday morning, an important tradition to him that they began when they were first married over 30 years ago. “We eventually started calling it our “Breakfast Date,” We both love it,” says Gary.

Melody feels that the relationships she and her team at Gayle’s and Abby Gayle’s build with their customers is the most important part of their business. “We have generations of families come in who are not just our customers, but like our own family. We wouldn’t be there without them and we are extremely grateful for them,” according to Melody. With Gayle’s and Abby Gayle’s, Melody and the boutiques participate in many charitable events including Komen Tickled Pink, Panhellenic Tea, Cattle Baron’s Ball, Tribute to Women, American Heart Association, Texarkana Friends of the Shelter and various other charities that are important to them and their customers. Melody is an active sports enthusiast and encourager in her children’s activities. “In fact, typically not only am I actively “cheering” my children, but also their friends because they are like a part of our family and we encourage them as well,” says Melody. In the words of Maya Angelou, “My mission in life is to not only survive, but to thrive, and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.”

Amanda is married to Jason Horton and they have a two-year-old son, Charlie. Amanda studied Nutrition and Food Science at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. Amanda had many friends in high school who struggled with eating disorders, and her personal goal through the study was to put an end to them. Once in the classes, she fell in love with food science and organic chemistry. She began working full-time at multiple restaurants learning all of the ins and outs of the business. After a few school changes, Amanda shifted gears once again and enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at Texarkana College. Just before graduating, she and her husband purchased their first location at 112 Pine. Her culinary adventure began and she leaped in head first! “Don’t live in fear of greatness. When I was at a crossroads and realized I didn’t want to sit at a desk all day making diet plans for sick people, I had a conversation with my brother, Chad. He had come to visit me in New Braunfels, TX. We were talking in the beer garden at Gruene Hall. He said I reminded him of Willis Alan Ramsey. Ramsey is a legendary songwriter who only produced one album in 1972. After Ramsey had such great success with his first album, it was like the fear of not living up to his first album paralyzed him and he never produced another one. Chad told me I had all of this greatness but I wasn’t doing what I needed to do to show the world what I had to offer. He told me it seemed like I was scared. It made me think differently and made me realize I had been doing just that. I was letting my perfectionistic tendencies and fear of doing something great prevent me from moving forward. That was a pivotal moment.” She currently has three real estate projects going on in different phases of construction. Through Flour Child, Amanda is truly living her dream, “Making people’s lives better through every stage in life. We are there for our clients whether it is a simple Supper for Two, a fresh salad on the go, catering a wedding or special event, casseroles for new parents, providing Suppers to go for families to enjoy dining together, Chicken Pot Pie for empty nesters, dinner for someone’s father who lives alone at home, holiday meals to go and much more. I love it when people come by to thank us for what we do. It makes my heart swell. I am so thankful for their support and then they make a special trip by the store just to say thank you. That’s the best,” Amanda says. January 2016

Rayfield William Walsh III, a.k.a. Field Walsh, started out building websites, doing marketing and creating videos for other companies when he began thinking about starting an online news site. “I felt that Texarkana had a real lack of good breaking news coverage and set out to change that. It just so happened that my hobbies such as web design, photography, shooting videos, were all very useful in creating TXK today,” explains Field. After the popularity of Field’s video from him coming home to police arresting a burglary suspect in his yard, he started developing TXK Today. A month later, he posted the first story to TXK Today. TXK today was started April 10, 2014. They currently have 35,000 facebook followers and average 30,000 page views daily. They regularly have a weekly Facebook reach of 1,000,000+ and over 2 million video views. The success of TXK Today has been Field’s greatest accomplishment in life thus far, and he only hopes to continue to grow and expand TXK Today’s coverage. Field is truly doing what he loves everyday and would tell anyone who asked that is the goal to becoming successful, “Do what you love.”

Susan Whitten is the proud mother of Parker and Scott Burks. Over the years, her husband, Dr. David Whitten, and she have become increasingly aware of the connection between lifestyle choices and long term health and well being. According to Susan, “The choices we make (diet, leisure activities, smoking or not, drug use, spiritual and personal discipline, healthy drinking, exercise) make a profound impact on the life we lead & how we feel about ourselves. People who feel good tend to look so much better simply by the smile on their face.” Voltaire said, “I choose to be happy. I find it is good for my health!” The biblical principle is prophetic and Proverbial - “A joyful heart doeth good like medicine!” The Beauty & Wellness Center is a ‘feel good’ business. Through the many things offered at the BWC, they get the honor of making others feel better about themselves. “Not quite a year ago,” Susan explains, “we introduced to the United States an amazing effective medical device skin care line from Milan, Italy, which we test-marketed here in Texarkana area to be sure that it actually delivers what it promises prior to launching on a larger scale to health professionals, consumers, and spas across the county. Known as DeU (deuamerica.com) which stands for ‘Man and Woman’ in Italian, this totally organic and ‘green’ skin care line promises to be transformative for those who choose to use it on a daily basis. Our goal is to share the great news of DeU throughout the country - making folks not just have better skin but to feel better about themselves- it’s all a part of what my husband refers to as ‘the beautiful life!’”

Taxes & Reducing Capital Gains By Dustin Stringer
Market downturns, are a good time to adjust your fund portfolio to minimize the tax bite. Here’s how to calculate the best ways to do that - now and in the future. Taxable accounts you hold longer than a year incur long-term capital gains taxes when you sell investments. You realize losses or gains, meaning your losses are subtracted from the gains and, if the result is positive, your gains are taxed at the preferable long-term capital gains rates (a rate often much less than ordinary income tax rates). The rates range from 0% to 15%. You receive the 0% rate if your ordinary income tax bracket is 10% or 15%, meaning your annual taxable income is less than $73,800 if you file your return using the married filing jointly category (MFJ) and below $36,900 if you file as single . Above these thresholds, your capital gains incur the 15% rate. Trimming taxes. When your losses exceed your gains, your capital gains are netted against the losses and the losses subtracted from the gains. In this manner, your gains incur no tax. If your losses exceed gains, you can use the excess to reduce your ordinary income up to $3,000 per year, carrying 52

over any remaining losses to future years. Let’s say your four taxable accounts (A, B, C and D) each have a cost basis (what you paid for the fund originally) of $10,000. •Fund A’s current value is $15,000 and it gained $5,000; •Fund B’s current value is $20,000 and it gained $10,000; •Fund C’s current value is $8,000 and it lost $2,000; and •Fund D’s current value is $4,000 and it lost $6,000. As is, you net a gain of $7,000 (your gains of $5,000 plus $10,000, minus your losses of $2,000 and $6,000). You can sell various combinations of your funds’ holdings, though, for best tax advantage. Selling all of funds A (which had a gain of $5,000) and D (loss of $6,000) nets you a long-term capital loss of $1,000. If this is your only activity in long-term holdings for the year, you owe no capital gains and you realize $1,000 in losses to use to reduce your income. What if you sell just 80% of your fund B, meaning $8,000 in gain? Then you sell all of both funds C and D, which combined lost $8,000? The result: zero capital gains and zero capital gains tax. This last example is the least efficient way to use your losses. Always attempt to maximize the amount you can use against ordinary income, resulting in the greatest tax reduction. If you sell all of funds A, C and D, for instance, you get a capital loss of $3,000 ($5,000 minus $2,000 minus $6,000) that you can use to offset income this year and potentially in future years. These strategies become even more important with larger holdings and if you have funds that rebound in value in the future. Social Security and other tax issues. Be careful with your capital gains. For instance, a gain taxed at even the 0% rate can increase your adjusted gross income, in turn increasing taxes on your Social Security income. Also use care after you sell a holding that recognized a loss. If you look to better your tax situation in the future with the same or a substantially similar asset, you need to wait at least
30 days before you buy. Otherwise you trigger what’s called a wash sale treatment, which according to the Internal Revenue Service effectively eliminating that loss for tax purposes. In 1952, Dr. S. A. Collom and a gathering of Texarkana citizens founded the “Texarkana Crippled Children Society” in response to the polio epidemic which was sweeping across our nation. Since that time, the Temple Center, an Easter Seals affiliate, has evolved and expanded into a premier facility providing physical, occupational and speech therapy for children and adults with disabilities. On Saturday, January 23, 2016, the Temple Center will be celebrating the thirteenth annual Phantom Ball at the Hilton Garden Inn and Texarkana Convention Center. This is an annual gala event benefiting the client services of Temple Memorial Rehabilitation Center. This year’s Phantom Ball will honor someone special from our community as the “Phantom(s)”. The criterion for “Phantom” is one who gives generously of their time and financial support to the Temple Center and the community of Texarkana. For more information or tickets please call Anita Carver at 903-794-2705. Sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available. Silent auction item donations are appreciated. Cocktail attire (cocktail dresses and suits), black tie optional (ballgowns and formal attire). Masks and fans are encouraged.

Your 2016 To Do List In the new year we need to check some stuff out and update others, so here is a list to get you started: Update your Navionics charts for your GPS because they added new things like gas on the water, restaurants on the water, and other useless stuff all for $100.00. (Because we really need to know where to find gas and a hamburger on Millwood or Patman.) Check your batteries, because you don’t want to pay that $200.00 entry fee and find out on tournament morning that your cranking battery has gone bad or run 20 miles up the lake only to have the trolling motor die after 10 minutes due to a bad battery -- or two or three. This is a biggie, for Pete’s sake put some new line on! 99% of the fish lost are due to line breakage. Sorry folks, that line
from last year might be bad. Show the trailer some love and check the greased bearings or oil in the bearings. Tip….if you have grease or oil coating your rims, you might be a redneck. If you don’t check them, at least clean the rims off so it looks like you did. Inspect that life jacket! Your favorite, which happens to be 15 years old, may not float anymore. I know all the tears and rough spots in it make you look like a hardcore fisherman, but really? You gonna wear that? And finally for the patch pirates, check those patches if you are still wearing a “Crème Field Tester” or a “Bushwacker Pro” patch, you might want to do some updating. So lets all do some checking of our stuff so we don’t look like a “goob” out there.

FOSTER. ADOPT. SPONSOR. TRANSPORT WORDS BY DEBBIE BROWER
There are so many pets in shelters across America, including right here in Texarkana. Have you ever I shed you could help hem, but just can’t make yourself go to the shelter? Well, here is an excellent way to volunteer! There are several organizations that offer free, volunteer-based transportation designed to rescue animals from high kill shelters and abusive/ neglectful situations, and transport them to screened and approved rescues and forever homes. This system is able to be successful, thanks to a large network of people who volunteer their time, gas money, and hearts, in order to see the animals reach their havens. The transporters who volunteer are much bigger than one effort. They may volunteer for several different organizations. Their hearts are just too big to belong to one transport system, and I am so appreciative of them for that. Each transport is important, because all of them have one goal in mind, and that is to see these wonderful furkids reach their safe destinations! Transport organizations cover many states. There is a main focus on sending animals from the south to the northeast; however transports are often coordinated for other states outside of that region. Many times there may be rescues that have approved placement for animals without having a way to send them. In these cases, animal rescue 80
ALT Magazine

transports play a vital role in assisting those animals to get to freedom and a new life. Saving these animals is a team effort, and when these volunteers work together, miracles can happen! The transports are broken down into “legs”, which are intervals of about 60-90 miles in length, one way. Transporters drive their legs, then hand off the animals to the next driver(s) at the next interval, in relay style, until the destination is reached. Many times, furkids are overnighted and then continue their journey the next day. Most transports in our area need drivers for the Sulphur Springs to Texarkana leg, or Texarkana to Arkadelphia leg. Screening is very important. Each receiver, whether it be rescue or forever home, is screened thoroughly before they are approved to receive any furkids riding in the transport. The well-being of each animal is of the utmost importance and not treated lightly. All updates received on the furkids are shared with the transport angels who helped get them to their destinations! We need your help! If you feel like you would be willing to “save a dog one leg at a time,” and would like to be a part of this amazing effort, or if you have further questions, please email info@alt-mag.com. We will get you in contact with the transports and you will be on your way to saving lives!!
